Chapter Text
I don't know how I ended up here, on the floor in the living room of number thirty-four. I'm not hurt or sick, just tired. Not tired like fatigued, but tired of this existence.
Staring up at the ceiling, my thoughts flit between my first day here and all of the events in between.
"The In-between", that's what this place is. It's someplace in between our earthly plane and fucking hell. Come to think of it, this might just be hell.
These are my thoughts, my reality.
Coming to a sitting position, I take my journal in hand. Flipping back through the pages slowly, stopping here or there to read a passage, I smile at the memory. And then I'm back at the beginning.
With a sigh, I relive my birth—my first day in this fucking hell.
"Home, take me home!" I yell at the automated voice on the map app. Today started out great. I completed my exams, I interviewed at this amazing company, and now I'm lost. "You are offline." the app states.
Gah! "I know I'm offline, take me back online!" I scream in frustration. A weird beep comes through on the app, before out of nowhere a car cuts me off. Swerving, to not backend them I regain control of the car before coming to a stop.
"Motherfucker!"
My adrenaline's skyrocketed and so's my anger. "You're back online." Says the app. If I didn't need it I would have punted the phone across the car.
"You're patient, you're calm. You're at peace." I rattle off slowly. It's my mantra to manage my episodes of anger. A few deep breaths and I'm back in control.
Resuming my journey to find my way home, I'm following the app when my phone dies. I don't have a charger. "You're patient, you're calm! You're at peace!" I run through the mantra quickly, knowing full well that it's not going to do me any good this time.
Accessing my situation, trees line a neverending road. Taking a glance at the gas meter, I'm disheartened.
Well, I can drive on and hope that there's a gas station nearby.
Two cars pass me and hope blooms. "Or, I can flag one of them down and get directions!"
Driving like a bat out of hell, I catch up to them and try to wave them down. A man and a woman. Getting their attention they don't engage me.
"What the hell?" Waving at them again, I'm given a questionable expression before they speed up. "Really?"
Unwilling to give up, I catch up to the other vehicle. The occupant just looks at me with no expression and increases his speed also.
Uncomfortable with the exchange, I slow down and fall back.
I'll just follow them. Hopefully, I'll run into a gas station or something.
I'm just glad that I'm not out here by myself, at least I have some company.
"I don't know for how long," I state, with a glance at the gas meter.
Trying to power up my phone, I glanced down for only a second, when the sound of a horn blaring relentlessly scares the shit out of me.
It's the man and woman, and I'm about to fuck their shit up! Mere feet from the rear of their car, I manage to veer off to the side just in time.
Regaining my composure and control of the vehicle, I don't have time to ponder as to how we were just on a straight road with no turns, and now we're in a subdivision.
Hallelujah, I found some help!
I'm out of the car, with an apology halfway out of my mouth— they're gone.
Shrugging it off, I head to the nearest home and knock on the door.
When no one responds, I try two more times, before moving on to the next home.
I've been at it all day, and I'm beyond exhausted. "Hello? Is there anyone here?" I try again.
It's just my luck to end up in an uninhabited suburb. Trudging back to my car, It's getting late.
I've driven around this entire residential area and there's not a soul here and no exit that I can see.
Resigned that I'll have to spend the night in my car, I search it for any signs of food. A strong growl from my stomach stresses the fact that I'm starving!
"Hello, are you looking for a home?"
"Ouch!" I state from my head hitting the roof of the car. The stranger's voice scares the shit out of me!
"Oh my god. Thank you for... weren't you the guy... Never mind, I'm lost. If you could point me in the direction of the exit, I will be on my way."
"What's your favorite number?"
My favorite number?
"Look, I've been searching all day for a way out of here. If you could please just tell me where it is, I will be so grateful."
"What's your favorite number?" He inquires again.
Waiting expectantly for an answer, I note his odd appearance and think better of acting an ass.
Apparently, he's a little off. "Thirty-four," I state flippantly.
"Todays' your luck day." He says gesturing towards the house that I'm parked at.
"Did I just win a house?" I ask disbelievingly, and yet still looking around for the cameras, flashing lights, and confetti.
"Yes, welcome to Yonder."
Chapter Text
It's been at least three months. I don't care to count anymore. The first few weeks I was optimistic. I awoke every morning and headed out in search of the weirdo. This had to be a game, a weird fucking game.
I've never been so wrong in my life. It didn't take long for the realization to set in, that I was trapped, trapped in some sort of maze—no a twilight zone.
The weeks came and went and so did the boxes. And when I thought that I'd completely lost my mind, the weirdo showed up.
"Ah...!" He scared the shit out of me, as I'm exiting the bathroom clad in only a towel. He's quick to dodge the well-placed groin kick, catching my foot in his hand.
I'm in shock, my breaths come in hard sharp gasps. My foot's still in his hand, as his vigilant gaze holds mine.
He's not the weirdo. He's just some weird guy.
His attention is drawn to my foot, and his thumb gently runs the length of it.
Alarmed at his reaction, my foot is swiftly reclaimed. It's been a while but I'm not desperate.
"Who are you and what do you want?" I inquire, wrapping the towel even tighter around me.
"I didn't mean to surprise you."
"Who are you? Are you lost, too?" I inquire.
"No, my name is Boy."
"How did you get here?"
"I must go."
"No, wait," I state, halting his departure with a hand on his arm.
"You have to help me. I've been stuck here for months. I don't know for how long."
Turning to face me, his inquisitive eyes search mine.
"You're afraid."
I'm panicked, scared shitless that I'll be left alone again, for months on end.
"Your expression, the emotions—I see it in your eyes. I can hear your accelerated heartbeat and the blood pulsing through your veins. It's alive, thrilling."
I don't give a shit about all of that. "Take me with you."
"I can't."
"Please don't leave me," I state, to his back.
Once again he's moved from his departure. "Will it please you, if I were to return tomorrow?"
"Yes." My reply is quick. I don't care who it is, I just want someone here with me.
Boy kept his promise and returned the next day. He's become, my friend—Always silently watching me with those inquisitive eyes.
He wants to know everything about my life outside of Yonder. And so, I entertain him with stories to bring him back to me each day.
"I miss wine and cheesecake. Oh... what I wouldn't give for some wine."
"Are those things food?"
"Yeah. If we make it out of here, we're going on a date. I'm going to gorge myself on wine, burgers, and cheesecake." I say with a laugh.
"What's a date?"
"Well, um... it's like when two people meet and they want to get to know each other. So, they go out to eat dinner at a restaurant, or they go to a movie or a walk in the park, or they spend time at home as a couple."
He's silent processing my words.
"Like us, we're on a date as a couple?" He asks delicately.
How in the hell do I reply to that? And why has his voice taken on a quieter tone?
"Like Gemma and Tom?" He inquires further.
"Who's Gemma and Tom?"
"My mother, and father."
"Omg, they're here in Yonder?" I ask giddy with excitement.
"Yes."
"Where are they?"
"At home."
"Can you bring them here? I would love some company."
Coming to his feet, he towers above me from my sitting position on the floor. "Am I not enough?"
"No, you are. It's just that you leave and I have no one. It's lonely. Maybe you could bring them and you all could stay here for a night or two." I offer, as I come to my feet also.
"I can't," He says leaving.
"It would be an official date, our first date. A dinner date," I state quickly.
Coming back in the living room, he's silent. He makes me uncomfortable when he stares at me like that.
"Our first date?" He asks, with his soft dialect.
"Yes, well of course it would be chaperoned by your mother and father, but I'm okay with it."
"I will let you know."
He's gone for good and this time he doesn't return the next day, or the next... nor the next...
Chapter Text
I've been in a slump ever since Boy deserted me. It's been weeks and I'm pissed at myself for being greedy.
He visited me every day and left close to the sun going down. So why did I have to ruin it by asking for him to bring his parents?
I'm tidying up my ugly ass home when the sound of voices has me laughing hysterically. I've officially lost it. I know it.
The sound becomes even greater, it's a crescendo of voices, that draws me to my bedroom window.
People are outside in the yards, they're coming out of the empty houses. I must be seeing things!
I make it down the stairs without breaking my neck. I'm out the front door and in the front yard running like a bat out of hell.
"Hey...! I scream above the voices of my new neighbors. They're busy looking around at the others, trying to figure out what's going on!
I've almost made it to the street when an invisible force sends me sprawling flat on my back.
Going down hard, a moan escapes my lips as I try to regain my senses. Whatever I hit, knocked the wind out of me!
Lying there listening to the others, I try to come to terms with what's happening. I can hear them, but they sound like I'm underwater.
I can feel my legs, I move them up and down in the air, while I'm still flat on my back. I try my arms as they took the brunt of the hit.
They seem to be working fine, and turning my head from left to right there's no pain.
"Are you okay?" Boy's face looms above mine. I've never been so happy to see anyone.
I'm in his arms with a quickness that alarms him. With my arms around his neck, I hug him tightly before giving him a quick kiss.
This seems to disturb him for just a moment, the expression washing over his features, and then it's gone.
He's back to his inquisitive gaze as I'm still holding on to him. His expressionless gaze starts to make me feel uncomfortable when I feel a slight quiver between my thighs.
Boy's vigilant study of me is turning me on. The way that he looks at me, I love it.
His response is a slight turn of his head as if he's picked up on it also.
"Who are all these people?" I manage, trying to calm my elevated heart.
"Mother said that I should bring you a gift for our first date."
I don't know what to say. He's thoughtful and romantic if nothing else.
"So, this must be her." It's a female's voice and turning to face the newcomer, Boy latches onto my waist to keep me steady.
A wave of panic hits me out of nowhere and makes me dizzy. A woman, blonde hair, petite, and by her side is a dark-haired male—The two that I saw in the car on the first day of my arrival.
"It's nice... It's nice... to..." I try to get out.
The blue sky and fluffy white clouds are the last things that I see before, the light quickly fades to dark.
Upon waking I know that I'm in my room. It's dark out and venturing downstairs, the woman is in the living room.
"Oh, I'm glad to see that you're finally awake."
"Hi."
"Hello Mercy, I'm Gemma. Boy has told us a lot about you. He speaks of you all of the time, nonstop as of late."
"Well, he hasn't told me anything about you. Or your husband...?" I ask, my eyes darting around the room.
"Tom, he went back home with Boy."
"Are they not coming back?"
Smiling slightly, she nods her head. "Boy will be back."
She's a lovely woman, a teacher before here. She raised Boy from a baby to a man. He grew quickly she informed me, not normal at all.
We both agree that they're aliens of some sort, that mimic us. Per her experience, they use us to rear their little ones for them.
"They're monsters," She says over the bottle of champagne that they brought with them.
"Boy's different," I state, taking a sip of my drink. Thinking of how he's been kind to me and sort of sweet.
"No, he's not, you'll see."
"She'll see what?" Boy asks, startling us. We didn't hear him enter.
"Girl talk." Says, Gemma.
We may not have heard him, but we sure as hell can smell him.
He's carrying a few bags, and I know that it can't be what I'm smelling.
Gemma and I exchange a look, before attacking the bags in his hands.
We're crazed maniacs, pulling the bags apart and attacking the food like animals.
"Oh, my god... a bacon.... cheeseburger," I state with my mouth full of the juicy burger.
"It tastes so good..." Adds Gemma.
The food in Yonder has no taste or smell and to finally have some real food, we're being gluttonous pigs!
We're both watching each other like prisoners, holding our burgers with both hands lest someone steals them from us.
We're each working on our second burgers when we finally ask Boy to join us.
"I'm happy watching you graze."
That elicits another shared glance between Gemma and me before we become self-conscious of the spectacle that we must have made of ourselves.
Wiping my mouth, I clear my throat and take a seat at the dining room table. Gemma joins me and we both finish our meal in silence but with decorum.
Chapter Text
Gemma went back to wherever she had come from, and Boy came back alone. I didn't know what to do. I put him up in the extra bedroom, and he's been with me for a week now.
"Good morning Mercy." It's the same greeting every morning. Descending the stairs, I join him for breakfast.
"You're still here," I reply, taking a sip of the tasteless orange juice.
"And you're late."
"Yeah, I don't have a job or have to go to school. So, it seemed like a good idea to rise when I felt like it."
"Are you being sarcastic?"
"Of course." I'm freaking irritated. I want out of here. The outside food that Boy had brought in didn't last long, and it only reinforced the reality of my situation.
I'm never leaving this place, and I'm a prisoner. I didn't do anything to deserve this!
"You're unhappy."
"I'm pissed, and I want to get out of here."
"You have to use the restroom?"
"No, I'm pissed, upset, mad, and angry as hell!"
"I see. Well, I'll be going."
"No, wait! Help me. Why can't I leave? Why am I here?"
Retaking his seat, he has that curious expression again.
"You're the first candidate of a new program."
"What fucking program?" I ask as the hair on the back of my neck starts to rise.
"A new breeding program."
If I hadn't been sitting, I'd have fallen down. "The lifespan of a Martin is incredibly short. Interbreeding was something that my people abhorred. But In order to evolve, we must join with your species."
Species? "What are you?"
"I'm a Martin."
"No, I mean like, what are you?"
"I'm a Martin."
Okay, fuck it, back to the breeding part.
"I'm not breeding with no damn body."
"You don't have a choice. But we are a bargaining species. Gemma and Tom raised me from a child to maturity, and they were released a few days ago."
Great, at least I have that! Let the bargaining games begin!
"What do I have that your people want?" I inquire.
"You'll carry the first crossbred child."
"Who or what am I crossbreeding with?" I ask, although afraid of the answer.
"Me."
Having sex with Boy, I mean Martin isn't a bad thing. But, could I really have a child and leave it behind for my freedom?
Yes, I can.
And so, I'm nervously sitting on my bed, waiting for Martin. What an ugly ass name. "Martin, Martin... Martian..." Laughing lightly, the door opens. Martin enters, interrupting my happy moment.
"Why are you wearing a name tag?"
I've just returned from completing my job."
Patting the bed, I invite him to join me. "Oh, and where do you work?"
"Outside of Yonder." He says taking his place in front of me.
"And, what do you do?"
"I recruit people."
That's code for "I kidnap folks".
"Well, I've invited you to my room to give you my answer."
"Yes?"
"I'll willingly do what you want if you take me outside of Yonder for just a day. I don't have to go any further than your job."
"You can't leave."
"I know that you said that I don't have a choice, but if you force yourself upon my person, I'll kill your child. Do you understand me?"
He's silent watching me, no staring at me. This goes on for longer than I'm comfortable with.
"Fair enough, but you'll conceive the child first."
His declaration of my request causes my heart to flutter. "Tomorrow, I visit outside of Yonder. You'll grant me that one wish."
"We honor our arrangements, Mercy."
"Have you ever kissed a girl, Boy?"
It's Martin."
"I don't like that name."
"You've kissed me."
"That was just a spur of the moment, an excited kiss. I mean like with passion."
"Passion... during coupling?"
"Yes, like that."
"No."
"You've never had sex?"
"No."
Scooting closer to him, I realize that I've hugged him, but I'd never really felt him, touched him. "May I?" I ask.
His quizzical expression follows my inquiry. I lightly finger his hand, running my fingers along the length of his.
Boy doesn't say anything, he lets me do as I please. He's silent watching me.
My fingers explore his arm. He feels like us, and he's warm to the touch.
I push any notion of him being different from my thoughts. With a shaky hand, I explore his hair, his face, and my exploration drifts lower to his chest.
He's still watching me with a solemn expression.
A need that I've tempered for so long, takes over. It's a need to be touched, to be desired, to be filled.
"Please, touch me," I beg him.
Unsure, His hand is placed on my thigh. A wave of heat courses through my body and a small gasp escapes my lips.
It's been so long, I want to feel a man's body on mine. I want to feel him inside of me.
Slowly moving forward, I wait for him to bridge the gap. Boy doesn't disappoint, still hesitant he moves forward.
His innocence turns me on. He doesn't have a scent, which disturbs me, but I don't let that deter me.
Softly my lips graze his. My hand goes to his face, and I let my desire reign supreme.
He doesn't know what to do, so I guide him. My tongue explores his, tasting and sampling.
The inferno between my thighs has become too much for me to ignore. My shirt's quickly discarded, and I shimmy out of my pants and panties.
I'm on him quickly capturing his lips in a passionate kiss. Placing his hands on my breasts I release a sigh of approval at his connection.
Boy's fingers tease the peaks of my hardened nipples, and can't stop the moan of appreciation of his devotion.
Helping him out of his clothing in between kisses, my gaze lowers to his erection.
Gently stroking his staff, his body trembles from my assault. "Mercy..." My name leaves his mouth in a whisper.
Pushing him back onto the bed, I straddle him. Hovering over his sex lightly rubbing my sex over his rod.
My juices saturate his manhood on contact, and unable to hold back any longer, I fully take him inside me.
Breathing deeply, I know that he's trying to control his release. I hold still allowing him to recover.
He has the most penetrating gaze. I love it.
Slowly rocking my hips, with my hands on his chest, I satisfy my need. Loving the sensations that his body offers mine, I keep up a steady pace.
Boy's hands on my hips guide my strokes. Warm, and intense I want the sweet agony to end.
Head thrown back, my pace increases. Riding him hard with quick energetic strokes, boy bucks and writhes beneath me.
Consumed by erotic wanton passion, the tightly coiled spring is released. Boy's orgasm peaks and his searing hot cum invades my core.
My lust dwindling, I drain him dry.
"I love you." His words touch my heart and I don't know if I can go through with my plans of escape. I don't know if I can leave him.
Chapter Text
Outside of Yonder, my eyes close and I take a deep breath of the fresh air. It's quiet. Boy takes my hand, leading me to the doors of his place of employment.
It's a small office with replicas of the houses in Yonder. "We've honored our end of the bargain."
"What? No."
"You've visited outside of Yonder and you've gone no further than my job. That was the agreement."
"I'm not ready to go back, and I said for a day."
"Hi, are you guys open?" A couple enters saving the day!
"Yes, are you looking for a home?" Boy automatically resumes his abduction duties.
"My wife and I are. We thought that we'd get an early start this morning."
"Do you have any children?"
"No, not yet."
"No, not yet." Boy repeats.
I would say that it was odd, but after what I've been through this is normal.
"Come with me, I'd love to show you our residences in Yonder.
"Help me," I state, moving behind the couple for safety.
Boy doesn't seem at all perturbed by my actions. He has that same blank expression that I've come to adore.
"Don't go with him, you'll never come back," I warn them.
"What are you talking about?" Inquires the woman with concern.
"I've been held hostage for months on end in that Yonder place. Don't go with him."
"Mercy..." Boy says, reaching for me.
"Stay back!" Warns the man, shielding his wife with his arm.
Backing away, we make a quick exit from the building.
The couple takes me with them, and although I'm happy, regret and sadness eat away at my conscience.
I take one last look at him in the rearview mirror, as we speed away.
A small smile breaks the corners of his mouth, and I swear that he waved at me.
It was discreet, but I know what I saw.
Taking a break from reading my journal, I go to the window and peer out at the ugly green houses that look like mine.
The people that were assigned to them are long gone. It's just me by myself in this area.
Going to the bathroom, I freshen up for my visitors.
I want to look perfect for them. My imprisonment is somewhat bearable because of them.
I'm showered and dressed in record time. I can hear them moving about downstairs.
"Noah!" I yell, rushing into his arms.
"Mama!'
On my knees, I hug our child. I'm limited to two-day visits weekly.
"I'll return later." Says Boy.
"You're not staying?"
"I have an extra assignment. I'll return later."
Boy stays with us on those two days, and I miss him as much as I miss our son.
I get lonely and I'm starved for affection from any and everyone.
"I missed..."
"I know." He says, interrupting me.
Noah gives him a quick hug before he leaves us.
"Come on." Says Noah, tugging at my hand.
"Let's play hide and go seek!" He's already running for the door.
"One... two... three... four..." I start the count.
"Five, six, seven, eight, nine... ten!"
The street is deserted. I go from house to house.
"Noah....!"
As I call out, I wait for a response and receive nothing. My light happy tone turns frantic. "Noah... Noah... Noah...!" I'm running from home to home beating on doors.
"Day turns to night and I'm sitting outside our home waiting on the doorstep. Noah appears skipping down the street.
I'm off the steps in a flash! "Where were you?" I yell, shaking him.
"I was here, but you didn't find me. So, I left."
"Here where?"
He points the way down the street. "You left? How?" I ask.
"Daddy showed me how to leave and come back"
My mind is working in overdrive. I can leave, for good this time!
I'd escaped, I was free. But my life wasn't the same. I'd lost my home, I had no job and I was pregnant and living in a shelter.
I was miserable, and missing Boy. The haunting way he watched me leave and then waved a small farewell, haunted me.
I went in search of him and found that the building had been burnt down. A random act of arson was what I'd been told. The culprit was never apprehended.
Yeah, because it wasn't a human that did it.
I'd explored the remnants, and waited for him to show. I willed him to, called out to him.
But he never did. So, I went into detective mode. Every realtor in the vicinity was harrassed by me.
And when I thought that he was lost to me, I found him.
Well, let's just say that he found me. I was in the shelter, in my last month of pregnancy, when he came to me in a dream.
He was waiting for me at the very place that I'd left him.
I left the shelter at first light, and when I arrived at the burnt-out office, he was there. He was waiting for me.
I wobbled as fast I could over to him in my delicate condition, and literally collapsed in his arms from happiness.
How I thought that my life was going to be better back in Yonder is beyond me.
My child was taken from me at birth and I was left to rot, with a few days allotted to me to see my child.
And it wasn't for my benefit, it was so my child could thrive better from human interaction.
That was the end game all along. They're going to do away with Yonder, merge, and coexist with the human population—blend in.
The old ways are over. They have no need for the short lifespan Martins any longer.
"Do you love me, Noah?" I say coming back from my thoughts.
"Of Course."
"One day soon, you're going to leave Yonder and you're not going to be allowed back in."
"I know, daddy already told me. You and daddy can't come with me."
The bastard, so he doesn't intend to let me go. I was a damn fool!
"I'm different, the first and the only one. But soon, there will be more like me outside of Yonder."
"You don't want me to come with you?" I ask cautiously.
"Daddy said that you can't."
"Why?"
"Because you're sick."
"I'm not sick," I reply, trying to keep my tone even.
"When was the last time that you had food from outside?" He asks me.
"A few months ago," I mumble trying to keep the fear from my voice. In actuality, it's been about five or six.
"You're sick, and you're going to be released soon."
Looking at my son peering back at me, it's like I'm seeing him for the first time.
And it's the first time, that I'm starting to view him as the enemy.
I have to get the hell out of dodge, with or without my son.
Chapter Text
I'm outside on the lawn with Noah. Boy's left us again. He's been doing that a lot lately.
"Where does Daddy go when he's not with us?"
"With the others."
"Others like him?"
"Yes, to prepare."
"What are they preparing?"
Quiet, his attention is drawn to the sky.
"What the hell!"
The sun's going down, away, or whatever the fuck it does when it turns from day to night.
A loud trumpet sounds off in the distance, and Noah's on his feet clapping with glee!
I'm watching open-mouthed as a group of people parades into our neighborhood.
Before, we were bound to our homes, but this is different.
Going to the edge of the lawn, I press against the invisible barrier. I'm stepping from the sidewalk to the lawn and back again repeatedly.
I'm laughing hysterically when the realization dawns that I'm free.
"Are you okay, miss?"
It's a dark-haired male that greets me. Ignoring the others, I'm in a daze as I touch his face with one finger.
He lets me prod and poke at his body without a word.
"I'm human and real." He says after some time.
Finally coming back from la-la land, my gaze goes to the others.
"What are y'all doing in here?"
"I suspect the same thing you're doing, existing."
"No, I mean here with us." Searching for Noah, he's gone.
My gaze goes to the crowd, and I panic.
"Noah!"
"The boy? He's gone." Says the stranger.
"Noah!" I scream, dismissing the man."
"All of those fake kids are gone."
"He wasn't fake. He was mine."
"Sure, lady." He replies, leaving me.
"Wait... what's going on?"
"The consensus is that we left our lawns and ended up here."
"Why?"
"The hell if I know, lady."
The sun's setting quickly, and the streetlights come on. The people are already grouping up and choosing houses.
"Do you and your husband mind if I share with y'all?"
"I don't have a husband."
"I promise that I'm one of the good ones. But If you don't trust me, I'd be happy to sleep on the porch. If you would be kind enough to grace me with a tasteless meal and a blanket."
In all of the confusion and craziness, his corny humor is most welcome. Giving him a once over, he's tall, easy on the eyes, and has a charming country accent.
Under my scrutiny, he's aware of my thoughts, and a sexy smirk warms his features.
"Abducted by aliens and I fucked a stranger, that should make for an interesting story one day," I state.
"If we ever get to tell it." He replies quietly.
I'd shared my bed and my body with Joshua, the stranger—Which he isn't any longer after what we did.
We'd spent the next few days getting to know each other during the day and screwing each other's brains out throughout the night.
Joshua's wife couldn't handle it and ended her life a few weeks into it. He raised his version of Boy until he became of age a few weeks ago.
He and the others were released, sort of. They're with me.
The sun still sets, and we're free to roam, just not outside of Yonder.
"You look like you're about to leap out of your skin."
Josh has joined me in the living room. I'm a nervous wreck waiting for Boy and Noah. They missed our last session, and I'm not sure if they will show up this time.
But I'm ever hopeful, and nervous because I have to explain Josh and my situationship.
He's unofficially claimed me as his, and although I care for Boy, he's not us—Not human.
He has no choice but to understand.
"Goddamnit, Boy!" I whisper harshly.
Apparently, I had the wrong idea about boy understanding. He'd missed another session, and I'd awoken in the middle of the night to him standing at the foot of the bed.
Being careful not to disturb Josh. I quietly sneak out of the bed and escort Boy quickly out of the room and downstairs.
"Where's Noah, and where have you been?" I inquire harshly, keeping my voice low.
"Your mate and the others will be released soon."
His statement sobers me.
"And you're going to let me die?"
"I thought I was clear when I said your mate and the others."
Looking into his eyes, it's always the same.
"Mother used to tell me stories of knights in shining armor."
I can't read him, but it's not necessary. His words say it all.
"I care for you, Mercy." He adds.
I didn't think that he was capable of love or feelings.
"You're going to rescue the damsel in distress?" I say with a small smile.
"Yes."
Well... shit! I was totally on board with my own escape plan, which included Josh.
I can save myself, and leave the others, but I can't.
"How many can we take with us?" I inquire of him.
"None"
"Let me take a few with us, please."
His expression remains the same, and then I finally see it. Upon further detailed inspection, I see it on his face. I see it in his body language.
"You're dying," I say. The air seems to have been sucked out of the room, and I go to one knee trying to regain my composure.
I don't know why I'm feeling like this. There's a dull ache in my heart.
And then awareness and understanding hit me hard and fast. I love him.
He's been my peace, my happiness, and my sanctuary.
"Boy..." I whisper out of breath.
"We leave now." He says, taking my arm.
"Not without Josh," I say, removing myself from his grasp.
His gaze searched mine for the longest. And I think that I may have to die here with the rest when Boy responds.
"Only because I care for you."
I'm up the stairs with speed, screaming for Josh to get up, least Boy changes his mind.
Chapter Text
We're dressed in record time when the earth shakes! Screams from the neighbors can be heard, as we're leaving the house.
Lights come on in many residences, as Boy takes my arm.
Holding hands with Josh, we're led to a car.
Driving past the people in the street, the fake moon is falling from the sky.
The sun rises and then falls just as quickly.
"Watch out!" I scream.
Boy zigzags past the doomed people, throwing themselves into the car in an attempt to stop it.
Looking back at the balls of fire raining down on the neighborhood, it becomes a cloud of dust.
It is no more. We'd made it out without incident.
We're back at Boy's place of business.
He doesn't hug me or tries to comfort me.
"Where's Noah, our son," I ask, desperate to find him.
"You will never see him again." He says collapsing into his chair.
"How do I fix this? What do I do?"
"You live, Mercy." His eyes close.
"Hey, Boy you can't do this! I came back for you!" I yell, shaking him awake.
"We have to go." Says Josh, watching out the front door.
"My time is done. I have done my job. Go and live, Mercy. Noah is well. He will not seek you out. He can't without compromising you." He says between labored breaths.
"He's a child", I say with a sob.
Reaching out, his hand touches my face. "You have brought me much happiness, Mercy."
My tears run down my face to his hand, to which he gently wipes them away.
"Leave, my replacement is coming."
With a smile on his face, his eyes close for the last time.
"Boy!"
"Come one, he's gone." States Josh.
I let him pull me from Boy and lead me out the door to our new beginning.
"There's a race of aliens living amongst us. They held us, hostage, for months on end. And one of them fell in love with me, and I with him."
We're at an alien convention. The turnout is amazing—People like me who know or think they know about the unknown.
"His name was Boy, and we had a child." On the stage, I finish my speech.
"They've changed their agenda. I was their first attempt at copulation to produce hybrids. We had a son, Noah. And he's out there somewhere. He's a man now, my little man."
I can only see him as the little boy, I don't know what he looks like now, all grown up.
"If you're watching, Noah. Come to me, I miss you and I love you. Help us to show the world what the government is keeping from us. Let's expose them."
My speech is followed by a standing ovation.
"Are you okay?"
Josh joins me on the stage, escorting me down the steps.
"Yeah."
His lips meet mine briefly before his arms close around me.
"I know how emotional you can get when talking about Noah."
"I'm okay."
"You sure?"
"Yeah."
Feeling someone's eyes on me, I look over Josh's shoulders to a young man at the front of the crowd.
He offers a small smile, and the recognition is instant—Noah!
He has his father's smile and eyes.
I yell his name over the din of the applause.
"What?" Inquires Josh. Looking in the direction that I'm staring.
He keeps me held in place, as I attempt to go to him. But he's no longer there—a figment of my imagination.
"Are you okay?"
"He was here, I saw him!"
Josh is staring at me for the longest time. "I believe you. He says. And it's important that he does.
"He loves you, and he wants you to know that he's okay." Josh attempts to comfort me.
Lifting my chin, my eyes meet his. "I love you, and I need you here with me, Mercy. Not living in the past or the future, but here with me." Josh adds.
He's right. His hand loving touches my stomach, that's full to bursting. "We know what happened to us, but we have to move on."
Our child will be here soon, and I have to learn to never forget the past, but I can't let it dictate my present or future.
"I love you," I tell him.
"I love you too," he says with that sexy smile that I love.
