Notes:

Next installment is here! I decided I didn't want to be uploading a ton of separate fics under an anthology when they're fairly in order so I'm going multi-chapters for this since I have various ideas I just have to string together. I got motivated to write this after INTERgrade's release, without saying specifics because the theories are wild, except for HYPE. We seriously need a remake/HD release of Crisis Core.... and more Zack merch.

A Flower's Promise is the prequel to this so read that first!

Shout out to my friend Fruitloopchan who helps inspire this AU and whom I can scream about Zerith together. I write the feels, you art the feels ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ ❤

Chapter 1: A New Start

Chapter Text

“You look like you’ve got something on your mind.”

“No… well, it’s nothing.”

“Do you really expect me to buy that?”

“No…?” Zack nervously scratched at the back of his head before letting out a sigh. Watching him with an amused but concerned expression was Aerith as she caught him in the kitchen downstairs. It had been a few days since Aerith had taken him and Cloud into her home—something he was sure her mother wasn’t completely happy with though she was clearly trying to be supportive while hiding her displeasure in front of Aerith. “I don’t want to worry you.”

“I think it’s a little past that. Besides, I’d worry less if you told me, honest. Besides, it’s only natural to have a confidant.”

“I just… have been thinking about a lot of things since, well, everything is sinking in now that I’ve been able to catch my breath.”

"Oh, that’s understandable. Can I ask what exactly?” Aerith inquired, offering a polite smile, bright emerald green eyes like the Lifestream itself nearly hypnotizing Zack despite his state of mind.

“Just, I mean… I was MIA for nearly five years. The world passed me by for four of them while I was… sleeping? Drugged? Both? The same for Cloud… the kid got his teenager years stolen and look at where it got him: mako poisoning. Now it’s like starting all over again with some familiar pieces to pick up but it’s a bit overwhelming.”

“It wasn’t your fault, Shrina made its own choices which were selfish. And, I’m not saying this to trivialize your feelings, but if you cling to the past and focus only on that you ignore the possibilities for the future, missing opportunities that come your way. But it’s a lot to take in. Take your time to process. I can’t begin to imagine what you went through and as I said before I’m here for you. Just tell me how I can help.”

“I…” Zack took another breath, shaking his head to clear it, steeling his resolve. “Of all the people who matter to me, only you know that I’m alive. I wish I could contact Kunsel, but the security…”

“I’m sure I can persuade Tseng to deliver a message. He can figure out a way to be subtle, it is his expertise.” Aerith smiled and gave a thumbs up, clearly trying to boost Zack’s morale.

“Well, I guess that’s one down,” Zack visibly relaxed a bit, a genuine smile forming as some tension left his shoulders. “That just leaves—”

“A secret girlfriend?”

“What? No!” Zack gawked at Aerith, feeling himself grow warm, confused and guilty over the fact she even considered the notion. Had he made her feel that insecure during his radio silence to truly consider he was fooling around, that he was one of those sort of soldiers with a girl in every town? Tension left him immediately as Aerith let out a laugh, waving her hand.

“I kid! But a serious guess would be your parents?”

“Yeah… I was going to go back to Gongaga but Shinra was, is, watching it. I don’t think I can chance if they finally stopped surveillance or not. I still don’t know if technically we’re MIA or KIA; I wasn’t exactly easy on their forces for them to just turn a blind eye to our escape. Not unless someone fudged the paperwork. Shrina usually wants a body count… uh, sorry that was dark.”

“No, it’s alright. Never knowing what exactly Shinra is thinking… that’s a familiar feeling,” Aerith gave a shudder and though Zack lacked any details on her life before meeting him, he could only wonder what she had endured from Shinra due to being the last Ancient. Recent talks hinted she knew Hojo and what little love she had for him, which Zack was sure meant she was a senior member in the Hojo Hate Club long before he had considered joining. When the time was right perhaps they could talk about it.

“I guess I could try Cissnei since she said she’d look after them for me, but again Shinra probably is spying…”

“Oh, childhood sweetheart?”

“No!” Zack had to laugh as he saw the playfulness on Aerith’s face. Still he had to silently admit he was drawn to the mysterious Turk in both mutual respect and awe, though Aerith had earned a special place in his heart. Cissnei was someone he cared for just like his other comrades—not that any of them looked nearly as good in a bathing suit and business suit, combined with a sense of wit and mystery. Pushing the stray thought away he continued, “An ex-colleague. She’s with the Turks, so she’s probably got worse surveillance than Kunsel.”

“Well, at least I know you have a healthy respect for you woman colleagues,” Aerith seemed content with the answer. She cocked her head for a moment of thought. “You never mentioned her before, afraid I’d get jealous?”

“Would you? Really, sweet, angelic Aerith can get jealous? No way! Who are you?”

“Hey! These green eyes aren’t just for show!” Aerith pointed to her one of a kind green eyes before winking. “But I get it, confidential information. That’s all the missions ever were. You were just doing your job properly.”

“Yeah… makes you realize once you’re on the other side of the fence how much of that was ‘the public can’t know or there would be a massive outcry because we’re doing inhuman shady things.’ After what they did to me, I’d happily join the resistance, though I’m not sure I’d side with someone like Avalanche given their tactics.” Zack sighed, running a hand through his hair that had been thoroughly cleaned recently thanks to the miracles of indoor plumbing and amenities he had been long without. “But yeah, just really makes you wonder how much Shinra has an eye on and how many pies they’ve got their fingers in.”

“Sometimes it’s best not to think about it or else you’ll go crazy. At least until you’re ready to handle it. You just do what you can,” Aerith assured before clapping her hands together, pointing at Zack. “But, sorry for sidetracking you, you were saying about your parents?”

“Right, well… I guess since my ‘inside’ contacts so to speak are unreliable… Could you write a letter to them for me? I hate to ask.”

“Me? Won’t they find it weird some random girl is writing them out of the blue?”

“Nah, I wrote about you a few times. Though, uh, I think I failed to mention your name. You know, since Shinra monitors outgoing mail to ensure secrets aren’t getting out. That and I think I was just being stupidly mysterious.” Zack let out a groan, placing a hand over his face at the embarrassment. More likely he got wrapped up in excitement and kept forgetting to namedrop Aerith, wanting to save the reveal for when he got the chance to bring her home. As if that plan panned out.

“Ah, that I can believe,” Aerith nodded sagely, cupping her chin in seeming thought. After a moment she dropped her hand, clutching both behind her as she rocked on her heels a few times before stopping. “Well, if you think it’ll help I’ll do it. I can say I’m your old girlfriend reaching out since I was thinking of you. Just tell me what you want me to put and we can figure out a code so if Shinra is watching your parents they won’t figure it out.”

“Really? You’re the best, Aerith!” Zack grinned as part of the burden that had been weighing on him lifted. “I just want them to know I’m okay and not to trust Shinra. And that hopefully one day you all can meet.”

“Oh, is that a date?” The tease in Aerith’s voice was clear though her expression was expectant.

“If you’re up for it. Though, maybe a backwater place like Gongaga shouldn’t be destination getaway if it’s your first time seeing the real sky… it’s not like we have a chocobo ranch or anything.”

“Zack, I grew up in Midgar’s slums. Besides, so long as the people are lovely, any place is tolerable. After all, I’d love to hear all the childhood stories about you! I bet you were a complete ladies man even as a kid!”

“No! No way!” Zack nervously laughed, feeling heat crawling up his neck. “I was just the energetic kid all over the place, promise!”

“The local heartthrob. All the old ladies after you to help them with chores and errands. A strapping young boy, a SOLDIER hopeful.”

“Ouch, I guess that part is true.” Zack let out a loud laugh, shaking his head as Aerith pegged one aspect of his childhood with ease. As the laughter died down he looked at Aerith, smiling. “Thanks, Aerith. I feel a lot better.”

“Happy to help!” Aerith offered a peppy salute. “Anything else?”

“I guess next thing is getting Cloud back on his feet. I swear he is getting better, though it’s slow. Maybe he’ll be able to talk soon but his lucidness seems to come and go. I’m lucky if he gets one word out but that’s improvement compared to the past year.” Zack gave a stretch to ease his tense muscles. “I’ve got to make myself useful or else I feel like I’ve overstaying my welcome. I’m sure your mom isn’t too happy about housing two former Shinra employees, no matter how polite she is about it.”

“As I told you before you can stay as long as needed, especially for Cloud. I think it’s brought back some memories for my mom, it keeps her busy in a different way.”

“Right, next is securing new employment…” Zack’s enthusiasm dampened as he turned pensive once more. “I had been thinking of maybe starting up a delivery service, partner up with Cloud. I was partly spitballing but maybe it really can become something. Mercenary work is an option and I’m familiar with various odd jobs like back home.”

“Hm, demand is pretty high in the slums for odd jobs and such and I can’t think of any good delivery services. Usually they charge crazy prices even if it’s not shady business, especially if they can leave the slums.” Aerith let out a thoughtful hum. “Like me and my flowers it’s an untapped business opportunity. I’d say that’s fair competition if any.”

“Hey! That’s it!” Zack snapped his fingers, pointing at Aerith with a liveliness in his eyes she hadn’t seen since he had gotten back. “That’s Fair Delivery Service! What do you think?”

“It’s catchy. Though, are you just punning it off of ‘Zack Fair’?”

“Partly? Actually I didn’t think about that… But I mean it has my name without being obvious while giving a promise of quality, right? Win-win! You request it, we deliver the goods or service! That’s Fair Delivery!”

“Well, at least it’s not Shinra sized ego.”

“Oof, that’s fair.”

Both broke out into a fit of laughter that only grew, Aerith clutching at her side while Zack tried not to double over, tears threatening to form from the hysterics. He let out a chuckle, swiping at his face, yet another layer of weight lifted. It was still a long road ahead but these little moments of joy, the small times with Aerith suddenly made it seem all worth it and he craved every second of it.

“Shhh, we’re going to disturb poor Cloud.”

“Or worse, summon my mother to tell us to be quiet and more mindful,” Aerith wiped away her own tears, smothering one last giggle. “You don’t want to see her when she’s in nurse mode. You think mom mode is bad, wait for that.”

“Oh, I can imagine.” Zack let out one last small chuckle, smiling at Aerith as she seemed to glow. He probably seemed like an utter mess if not a well muscled dork yet she was lovelier than ever. As he watched her a question that had been at the back of his mind spilled out as he looked at her long brunette hair, doubt over his earlier assumption nudging him. “That’s not the really same ribbon I got you, is it?”

“Of course it is!” Aerith reached up to touch the pink bow, a serious expression on her face. “Why wouldn’t it be?”

“I’m just surprised! I thought maybe another boyfriend or someone got you another. I wouldn’t blame you if you threw it out.”

“I would never do that! I made so many memories while wearing this! And if I wore it everyday, there was no way I could forget you. It’s one of my most prized possessions, I’ve taken care of it to make sure it hasn’t gotten worn.” Aerith’s look of horror melted away to something tender, almost shy but sincere. “Besides no one has ever gotten me something as thoughtful as this. I couldn’t simply part with something so special.”

“Well maybe I should get around to buying you another some time, so you have a spare so that one doesn’t chance wearing out sooner. If you want.”

“I’d love that. It would mean a lot.” Aerith smiled warmly and Zack felt his heart swell in his chest and couldn’t help but smile as well, happiness infectious when he had been without it for so long.

“Then it’s a date!” Zack’s smile faltered after a moment, “Uh, just as soon as I get my finances in order. Can’t exactly buy things with pocket lint. Hope you don’t mind the wait.”

“Guess we’ll just have to see after you do a trial run of your services! Time for you to make a name for yourself!” Aerith declared, pumping her fist into the air in cheerleader flair.

“Right, other than ‘Aerith’s deadbeat boyfriend.’”

“No way! Well… I suppose a few might think that but we’ll just have to change their minds! Besides, we both know the truth.”

“So long as I can get in your good graces again.”

“Oh I’m sure you will, eventually,” Aerith gave a wink before straightening, her expression turning serious and inquisitive. “So, before you go off on your business endeavor you’ve got something else you should be doing?”

Zack took a moment to think, mulling over what responsibilities he currently shouldered and was forgetting. After a moment he brightened, gesturing with realization, “Ah, right! Your wagon wheel!”

“Perfect! See, you got your first customer where your delivery is your manual labor skills.”

“Ah, I’m getting pumped!” Zack was brimming with energy, his sense of purpose renewed. He felt like he was going to burst without a release. Taking a few steps to make sure he had enough room he began dipping down to the ground and up again, propelling himself with his arms.

“What are you doing?” Aerith managed as she laughed, watching as Zack began a series of squats like a madman.

“Just letting off some steam while gearing up! A little warm up!”

“Shouldn’t you take that energy outside where you can use it for work?”

“Hey you’re looking at the squats champion! Besides I’ve got energy to spare now!”

“I don’t doubt that.” Aerith let out a laugh, attempting to stifle it when the stairs gave a creak. She turned on her heel to find her mother standing near the bottom, a hand on her hip, her expression slightly displeased as well as questioning.

“Uh, morning, ma’am.” Zack froze mid-squat, looking like a child that had just been caught in the act of something forbidden. He quickly straightened and gave a bow, complete with nervous smile. “Sorry for the noise, thanks again for the hospitality. I really appreciate you letting us crash here. I promise to be out of your hair soon.”

Elmyra let out a low hum that all children with vigilant mother-figures knew, her eyes flicking from Zack to Aerith, calculating. “Good to know someone is going to earn his keep. Don’t worry about your friend, I’ll look in on him now and then while you’re out.”

“Thanks a million! I know he’s in good hands. I’d best get started on that wagon!” Zack beamed, starting to give a salute before correcting himself with a bow instead. He was out the door within a few seconds.

“Of all the strays to bring home,” Elmyra let out a sigh as soon as the door shut, shaking her head. “I know you have a big heart, Aerith, but I don’t want you getting hurt.”

“Well, I guess I get it from you.” Aerith gave a warm smile, looking at the woman she had called mother for well over half her life. “Besides, he’s the perfect gentleman.”

“Everyone shows others only the side they—”

There was a light knock on the door and a few seconds later it opened. Zack stuck his head in, looking slightly bashful, “Uh, sorry to interrupt, but could you show me where it’s at, Aerith? Kinda got ahead of myself.”

Aerith tried not to laugh, biting it back with a polite smile, clasping her hands behind her back. “Sure thing! Be right out!”

Zack gave a look of relief before ducking out again, once more giving Elmyra a respectful nod. Elmyra nodded in acknowledgement, still looking guarded and barring the stairway.

Aerith turned back toward her, smiling as she gestured. “See, a perfect gentleman!”

“Hm, I suppose time will tell.” Elmyra let out a sigh, dropping her hand from her hip, knowing the fight on her hands was an old one. “He does seem genuinely nice and I know how you felt about him. Though you know how I feel about Shinra…”

“Mom, it’s okay, he’s ex-Shinra now and he knows how bad they are. He’s been through a lot. He’s just trying to make a new life while helping his friend. I want to help him with that like he did with my flower business. He has a good heart and I’m afraid he’ll put everything on himself—he’s had to for the past year.”

“I know you’re a good judge of character. Just seeing those SOLDIER uniforms makes me feel uneasy, like that day the Turks showed up for the first time.” Elmyra softened her expression, “Well, I just hope he can deliver.”

“There’s no doubt. Especially this time around.” Aerith smiled reassuringly, a knowing look in her eyes that her mom knew as something beyond normal comprehension. “This is a chance to start again and I do believe in second chances so long as someone is trying. Whether in this life or the next.”

“Fine, you’d best give him a hand before he worries himself silly.” Elmyra resigned, waving toward the door. “The sooner everything is set the sooner they’re out. The man insists on sleeping on the floor next to his friend’s sickbed rather than put us out! They need better accommodations in the long run, maybe the neighbors know of some good vacant places.”

“You’re the best, Mom!” Aerith gave her a quick hug before heading out the door, offering a quick wave before calling out to Zack as the door was closing. “Operation: Fill Midgar With Flowers 2.0 is officially underway!”

“Couldn’t have said it better myself!”
