We Only Have Eachother

Summary:

Subjects 34565, 34566, 49575, and 94474 don't remember how they got to the facility that had been their pain for as long as memory allows, all they know is that they hate it there. When given the chance, they run away together. The four hybrids are then left to their own devices with food, water, and shelter. The need for a safe place is ever-present as they try to adapt to their new lives. But, it is not as it seems. At least, to the rabbit hybrid, with a tendency towards splitting headaches, it isn't. Forced to be friends by circumstance more than choice, they grow to know each other. But, what if this wasn't the first time they've all met?

Chapter 2: Run

Summary:

They run, and run. To escape, to be free. After all, this was all they had left.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

His feet scraped against branches and rocks, blood finding its way through small cuts. But he had to keep on running. To get away. To escape. On his left was a cat omega that smells like pre-heat, it drives his instincts crazy in a mass of unorganized thoughts. On his right was another hybrid, a beta from what he could tell. Above them was a falcon alpha flying ahead only a bit, keeping a birds-eye view.

Bullet shots rang out and the cat omega squeaks before running faster. He keeps a close eye on the omega. They keep running, bullets whisking past them at high speeds, barely missing the group.

They ran, and ran until all was quiet. Not a sound to be heard, they stop to catch their breath and squint heavily as the sun rises over the horizon and they all stare at the sunrise in awe as they've never seen it before.

They escaped as they were being moved, the falcon able to hit the guards unconscious with her wings and the other three ran from there. Dodging guards and doctors with syringes,  they ran through the darkness. A creepy, scary place but they had to escape.

He couldn't remember the last time he breathed, the air was fresh. Not bogged down with the scent of heat, pain, fear, and pregnancy. His senses feel just as clear with the change of scenery. He glances at his travel mates, the falcon perched on a tree. Still on high alert. She was the reason they made it this far and he had to respect her for that. The beta hybrid looked to be surveying their surroundings, his skin glowing blue in the sun's light. The final was the cat omega, he lay on the ground. Panting heavily still, most likely due to the fact his body was saving most energy for the incoming heat they could all smell. But, Corpse thought this omega was cute and precious. He needs to be protected at all costs. His mind was fighting, the alpha instincts clashing with the omega ones.

The falcon lands on the ground, everyone's attention shifting to her as her wings shifted behind her back, the tips of the feathers brushing the ground.

"I believe, introductions are in order." She said and the others blinked at her before nodding. "My name is Rachel, but I prefer Rae."

"Jeremy." Said the other one, glancing at the group.

"T-thomas." Stuttered the small omega, and they all smiled to try and comfort the omega.

All eyes turned to him and his throat went dry, he didn't know his name. His head began to hurt as it tried to access something it wasn't meant to. He looks at the ground and says, "I don't have one."

The group was surprised by his voice, as deep and husky as it was. He too was surprised seeing as he hadn't heard it in quite some time himself, but he decided not to think too much of it. He had too many problems to think about it now.

The omega in him whimpers lightly at the shame of not knowing, and the alpha bemoans their cowardly position. They were almost completely separate beings in his mind and they fought a lot, with different values and instincts.

"That's okay, you can choose one for yourself!" The small cat omega said excitedly and the others nod encouragingly.

He thinks for a moment, his head splitting with a headache as it tries to access information behind a wall, and a name from the past emerges. "Corpse, call me…Corpse."

"That is a fire name my dude, kinda wish I had one like that." Rae said

"Rae is a cool name too." Newly named (renamed?) Corpse reassures.

Thomas looks down skittishly, and the omega in Corpse had him gently placing an arm around the poor thing and sending soft calming hormones to the other omega. It surprised the poor omega slightly, as he had pegged Corpse as more of an alpha.

"Corpse…" Thomas says softly, clearly nervous "Would it be rude of me to ask your second gender?"

"I don't mind, I um...I'm actually an omega and an alpha. Rolled into one explosive package." Corpse said softly, Thomas seemed almost horrified by the idea.

"Okay, we have to figure it out from here. We need food. Water. And shelter." Jeremy says, and the others nod lightly.

"We need somewhere safe, for Thomas." Corpse said, gently grabbing the poor omegas hand "That should be our first order of business. I won't rest until he is safe." Corpse wasn't sure if that was the omega or alpha talking, but maybe the gray line in-between...

Rae glances over at the poor omega who could go into heat at any minute. He seemed content to hold onto Corpse as the man was emitting calming hormones gifted to him through the omega side, more so than the alpha anyway. Actually, Corpse wasn't sure. There was a certain crossover between the two.

"Okay, we'll look for some shelter. We can split responsibilities, me and Rae will look for food and water while you two find shelter suitable for our needs." Jeremy said and the others agreed.

"I'll be sure to find all of you when we get back together. Take care you two." Rae said, hugging them tight, wrapping her wings around them protectively before following after Jeremy.

"Come on Thomas, let's find you somewhere safe." Corpse says, and Thomas nods lightly. Corpse grabs his hand and gently pulls him deeper into the woods, paranoid they were gonna be caught at any moment. It got so bad his ears were all but hidden in his mass of hair as they lay flat.

Corpse noticed that Thomas seemed to be tiring pretty easily and while the omega side understood. The alpha side demanded he help the poor omega in any way possible.

"You want me to give you a piggyback ride? You must be exhausted." Corpse said softly, turning around and Thomas froze like a deer in headlights. Before sheepishly smiling and looking down. Corpse steps and gently raises the omega's chin with the confidence of an alpha, and the gentleness of an omega.

Thomas seems surprised by the display but doesn't pull away. Rather his eyes dilate lightly and Corpse pulls away before he causes Thomas to finally go into heat. He gently picks up Thomas with a hidden strength and sets him so he can hold on in a piggyback formation.

After a moment of walking, Thomas's eyes drooped down until he fell asleep and Corpse remained vigilant as he tried to find anything that could be shelter for them. He needs a safe place that has enough soft things to last the poor omega's heat. And, maybe his own should they reach that point.

Corpse was determined to keep his newfound friends safe, and alive. They were in this together, from the moment they tore through the woods they were stuck together. Corpse knows this, and that is why he is doing everything in his power to keep them safe.

Chapter Text

Thomas opens his eyes lightly when they stop moving, he peaks up over the mass of black hair and purple bunny ears. The woods cleared to show a campground of sorts that was abandoned based on the weeds all over the old wood.

He sighs lightly in relief, he was terrified with his heat being so close but he couldn't stay at the laboratory. And he was happy to have them all, Rae was fiery and she cared for them. Jeremy was soft in his care, but it was there. And Corpse, there was something about Corpse that drew Thomas in.

His scent was unique, which he now knows is due to his equally unique genetic makeup. He smelt of sweet flowers, specifically roses and some other flower he couldn't place. But he also smelt like metal and leather. It was an odd combination, but it oddly fits the owner of it.

He could almost smell the relief Corpse was feeling as he softly walked towards the abandoned area. He cautiously checks around, his long bunny ears twitching lightly every once in a while as if to show he was listening closely.

He checked the whole campground, which contained 4 cabins, with one much bigger than the others. The smaller three were clearly residential with a couple bunk beds in two of them, and much bigger beds in the last one. Luckily they seemed to still have sheets and pillows as if whoever was here left in a hurry.

There was one last cabin and it was big, with a large table and a kitchen. Multiple closets were all over and luckily for them there were a few canned goods innocently hiding in the very back of the cupboards.

Corpse notices Thomas watching curiously, and he smiles lightly. "Whatup baby?"

Thomas smiles lightly, but then frowns as Corpse softly presses a hand against his own forehead with slight pain entering his scent.

“Are you okay Corpse?” He asks softly

“Yeah, just a headache.” Corpse answers gruffly,

“Is it bad?” Thomas asks worriedly

“No, it’s getting better. Don’t worry about me.” Corpse answers.

Corpse gently helped the cat to the ground where he set feet on the ground. The earth seemed to vibrate on his bare feet, the cuts and pains fading away as the ground seemed to comfort him. He softly crouches and feels the energy part with the touch of his hand, he feels a soft push and pull of energy. It doesn’t add up to him, but he is brought back with Corpse gently hopping onto a tree, his jump naturally higher due to being a bunny. He seemed to be looking for someone, probably Rae.

He wonders why Corpse got a headache for a brief moment, maybe it was just a side effect of having conflicting instincts all the time. Thomas couldn't imagine having such opposite forces in one mind. He could barely handle the omega part, but he could never manage 2. That made a lot of sense, it all clicked in his mind.

Thomas looked around, the sky was so bright. Different from the stinging brightness of the lab. It was nice, it had such a beautiful shine to it. He didn't see their falcon friend and hoped the other two were having as much luck as they were.

____________________________

"Do you think this is edible?" Asked Rae, flying down with a single berry in hand. She handed it to Jeremy who examined it closely, carefully looking all over it. He just felt he was lucky they made him read so much, the information on what's edible in the forest truly helped.

Jeremy squeezes the berry lightly and a sweet smelling juice comes out, he determines that it was in fact safe to eat. "Gather more of these, I'm gonna go look around the nearby pond."

Rae nods and gets to work collecting the berries, Jeremy walks to the pond and looks over the shiny surface. His eyes delving deeper into its depths, he could catch them some fish. It would be easy due to his ability to breathe underwater, well to be more accurate, hold his breath for a really long time. He deduced they probably used a water mammal to work the mutation in more naturally.

He softly dives down, not caring if the outfit they were forced to wear got wet. He holds his breath and takes time collecting some fish for them to eat. Jeremy returns to the shore,  fish in hand. They squirm but he keeps a tight grip on them. It was then Rae landed, a lot of berries lay in a plastic bag.

"Where'd you get that?" Jeremy asks

"It was caught in a branch, and I thought I'd use it." Rae answers, brandishing her bag of berries proudly

"So, berries and fish then." Jeremy says

"Not the worst, and there is a lot of water in the nearby forest. I saw quite a few above the tree line." Rae said

" Let's hope the others find somewhere for us to stay." Jeremy says

"I have faith in them, there is nothing stronger than an alpha's instinct to make sure an omega is safe. " Rae says

"I can't imagine having both…” Toast said

They further towards the direction they had come, marked with divets they made in the trees. Rae's wings twitching slightly, her hands held tight around her bag of berries.

"Do you want me to fly up and see if I can see them?" Rae asks and Jeremy nods

Rae flies up, peaking over the trees. Jeremy continues on, watching to make sure he was going the same way as her. Holding the fish tightly so he doesn't drop them.

After a couple minutes Rae flies down and tells him she found the way and the two trek in that direction. They reach the clearing with the cabins and are relatively surprised by it, Corpse jumps down from the tree, landing surprisingly well. His ears twitching lightly. Thomas was sitting down, breathing slowly. Clearly at wits end with keeping his heat away through sheer will if not luck.

"You got food!" Thomas said excitedly, but it was a tired excitement. And clearly so.

"Yeah, do you know if they have like working kitchen stuff here?" Jeremy asks

"We have a couple gas stoves and lighters in the main building, the power and water are long gone. No fridge or freezer." Corpse mentions lightly, softly checking on Thomas.

"Good, I'll go make something for you guys." Jeremy left and Rae followed with the berries.

Corpse comforts Thomas, the poor kitten clearly worked up. He flattens his own ears as much as he can before trying to get the omega comfortable. The stress of heat in a new location weighed on his mind, so much you could smell it in his scent.

"Do you want to prepare the heat room baby?" Corpse said, and Thomas nodded weakly. Corpse gently picks him up, and takes him into the cabin before depositing him into the bed. He yawns lightly and stretches, Corpse grabs all the pillows and bedding from the other beds and carefully places them on the bed with Thomas.

The omega was starting to go under, his eyes getting hazy and his cheeks growing pink. His ears pushing back and his tail wrapping around his leg lightly. His scent picked up only a moment later. Corpse smiles, happy Thomas finally felt safe enough to just relax and let it all go.

He sneaks out of the room gently, and locks the door so the heat driven cat doesn't try and get one of the Alpha's to, well, mate him. He's seen it happen in the lab, an Omega escaping just to break into an Alpha's room to beg. This usually pissed off the company as they try to breed for experimental purposes.

Corpse softly sneaks outside and sees the others, they look at him confused. "Thomas went into heat, he's in that third smaller cabin there. Just leave him alone and give him space. "

"Poor thing." Rae said it seemed uncharacteristic of the proud falcon but they didn't say anyone.

"I'll feed him something after it calms down a little, and some water. Lots of it, he'll probably be sweating a lot and be dehydrated." Corpse says and the others nod as food is passed out. Cooked fish with berries.

"U-h, g-eat to s-e you g-ys ag-in t-o."

Corpse awoke with a start launching up, his head quick to punish him as he is hit with the worst headache he's ever had in his life. He is sweating lightly, and breathing heavily. The other two were fast asleep, so it was only him.

Fuck, he couldn't go back to sleep with a headache this bad. He swings his legs off the edge of the twin-sized bed, the three choosing to sleep on the bottom bunk of the bed in case they need to get up, yeet Thomas over their shoulder like a bag of potatoes, and make a run for it.

He places his feet against the wooden floor, which was surprisingly cool to the touch. He leans forward and starts praying to whatever God it would stop, the dream he just had slipping away into nothing. A few things were caught but the information was gone.

Corpse softly stands and stumbles out the door, hoping that the fresh air will clear the headache. He sits there for a moment, gently sipping water they had gathered until the headache went away. He sighed in relief and lay back against the weed-ridden grass.

He watches the sunrise for a moment, it was almost like the sunset they had witnessed the night before. Except, it wasn't.

He gets up and enters the main building to get breakfast ready for everyone. He got the fish from where it was cooked, they probably didn't have much longer left with it. He lathers sweet berry sauce on it and reheats the fish, placing it on 4 plates. He takes the water they had gathered up last night and gently boils it as best he can to make it good for them to drink. It was Jeremy said to do, and he seemed to know these things.

His ears bounced lightly as he hummed lightly, it wasn't something he recognized. But, for some reason, he knew it. His bunny tail was tucked into the pants of the lab outfit. But it was twitching lightly, he could tell.

That reminds him, he has to check on poor Thomas. His ears twitch as he thinks about the mentioned cat omega. He softly gathers the food and water before sneaking across the camp to the heat room…hesitating slightly. Locking the alpha in a box as best he could, so it was just omega for a bit.

He opens the door lightly, balancing the food on the cup. Which was a talent he didn't know he had until well, today. Immediately he was hit with the sweet smell of dewdrops and wet grass, a gentle floral scent accompanying the smell. Giving an allusion of a rainy flower field. He thought it was a cute match for the omega.

Thomas stirs at his arrival, peeking up at the other through hazy eyes. His body is covered with a blanket that resides as part of the nest he had made. He squints at Corpse lightly, and Corpse offers the food. Knowing the omega was probably really hungry.

Thomas takes the food and sits up the blanket slipping down to leave the bottom half covered. His chest was soft and squishy, typical of omegas. Corpse thought he was really cute, but he felt the alpha growl at the name tag pierced into his skin right below where the mating mark would go, to show he was an owned omega. And that fact set the alpha off. He wasn't sure why, because Thomas wasn't his.

Thomas ate, his ears twitching excitedly and his tail wrapped around the blanket lightly. Corpse felt his hand subconsciously trail to his own tag, he was half omega after all. The alpha clearly didn't know about this tag seeing as it was before he was shoved in, but immediately demanded that he rip it off. He pushed the alpha further back, and searched for signs of the next wave. Normal omegas might be worried about getting thrown in early heat, but because of the Alpha it never happened.

Thomas finishes his breakfast, Corpse takes it and smiles. Thomas watches the curve of it for a moment, too long as his eyes dilate and he begins to rapidly heat up. Corpse makes his exit, trying to ignore the soft mewls as he walks away.

The alpha bursts from its cage, demanding that they go help their mate with his heat. He pushed them off because Thomas wasn't theirs. They have no right to assume as such, the kitty deserves to choose for himself who he mates.

But the omega didn't agree with him for once. Instead, it softly agreed that they need to help their little mate because heats alone are hard.

He doesn't know if he should be impressed they agreed for once, and angry that they couldn't comprehend Thomas wasn't theirs. And, will probably never be theirs.

Corpse walks towards the big building and runs into a sleepy Rae and Jeremy. He tells them about the food and they thank him before walking that direction. He then finds himself alone in the cabin they had slept in.

Be slips off his shirt and looks at the name tag, the letters and numbers Subject 34565 seemed to leer at him in bold black text. On the back, the company logo, as well as a small barcode. He couldn't remember right, but he was pretty sure it was just the omegas who got the name tags in such a way. The alpha's skin tended to be thick, and pure alphas would've no doubt ripped it out. He was given it when he was pure omega, his skin got thicker around the tag. Meaning pulling it out would be really…really painful.

But the inner alpha didn't give two shits about pain. Demanding they rip it off, right then and there. The omega didn't agree, saying they have to keep it in there for just a bit until it's safe to remove.

Corpse shifts the ring around a bit, looking for an opening, it had to have been put on in some way. Shifting it irritated the skin until it started to bleed red. He ignored it, as blood trails from the spot.

He found a small divot in the ring, he gently pushed at the divot with his fingernail and it did nothing. His ears droop and he can feel them against his back, the purple fur rubbing the skin on his back lightly.

The alpha wouldn't shut up, and at this point, he was gonna beg for it to shut up. The claiming tag was too much for his alpha pride to handle, the omega was for some reason trying to reason with the alpha. But due to the nature of the omega, the alpha shut that down rather quickly.

Tear it off, the only pain you will feel is only second to the hit in our pride. That's what the alpha insisted, his logic trying to convince him to not listen to that because it was stupid alpha instincts talking. The omega weakly agrees with his logic, and Corpse struggles mentally before weakly pulling the shirt back on. Pushing the issue back.

He walks out, his eyes drawn to the heat cabin with a sharp calculating look around the perimeter making sure the omega was safe. It was out of instinct more than thought, but for some reason it just made his heart feel lighter than before.

"Hey, he's safe in there. You made sure of it." It was Rae, she softly landed next to Corpse who seemed a bit frazzled either from his mental crisis or his overprotectiveness of a certain omega. Of whom he had only known for a day or 2 at most, as far as he knows anyway. While Corpse was an alpha, he was also an omega. Rae knew even he would need the same comforts as a regular omega from time to time.

"I know, I just have this overwhelming need to protect him. And it goes beyond he's an omega in a vulnerable state. " Corpse explains, his thoughts coming to the surface like little bubbles. Rae seems to understand, literally taking him under her wing to offer a warm hug of which Corpse didn't know he needed.

"He'll be okay, and when the time comes, you'll be safe and protected as well." Rae encourages and Corpse sighs lightly picking at the tips of his nails, it was like an old habit but there was nothing to pick at.

Rae pulls away and messes up his already messy hair, careful to avoid the sensitive rabbit ears. He chuckles lightly and can't help but lean into the familial gesture, his tail twitching lightly and he realizes that their clothes were very uncomfortable.

He had a small puff of a tail, but it was still uncomfortable because apparently they were too lazy to find him pants with a tail hole even though most of their experiments were hybrids. Thomas's looked a little tight around his tail and Rae's was definitely cutting into her wings and restricting some motion. Jeremy looked relatively unbothered but it seemed to fit differently after his dive the other day, one he would probably do again after they finish the fish they have. Hopefully before it goes bad, it was remarkably okay after this long. But it certainly won't last till tomorrow. If it didn't go bad by this afternoon.

Corpse's ears folded and his eyes' invulnerability shifted to the cabin Thomas resides in. He scolds himself for caring so much about an omega he had just met, but a naggy voice in his head whispered "Are you sure?". There was an undeniable feeling that he knew Thomas much longer than a few days. Like they'd know each other for years. It didn't add up to him.

Great, another voice. As if he doesn't already get enough of those with the omega and alpha duo. Lucky fucking him. He almost growled mad at something. But he didn't, instead his tail was twitching up and down aggressively.

Rae gently unfolds his ears and he is brought back by her sisterly affection, she pats his head lightly. And for once, it seemed the voices were quieter.

"Come on, we need to find more food." Rae said and Corpse followed. The alpha demeans him for following her like a lost puppy, the omega seems content and happy for once.

Notes:

Hi everyone, I know it's been a while but school has kept me really busy and I have other projects I'm working on. I have ideas for this story and plan to finish it.

Right now, I'm working on my biggest project yet and I hope everyone likes it when I finally get around to posting it.

Thank you for reading and for being patient with me.

Notes:

This story is under construction and a rewrite is being done. Slowly these chapters will change and warp to my new ideas.
