Chapter Text
One crisp fall afternoon, Castiel came home to an unusual sight: Dean, Jack, and Claire were seated around the dining table, heads bent together in concentration. The angel could see his husband holding scissors and carefully cutting a piece of thick paper.
When he came closer, he saw that the paper was actually a sheet of multiple Halloween- and fall-themed intricate temporary tattoos. In particular, two bright clusters of October Sky Asters caught his eye. In addition to other tattoo sheets, multiple color palettes and brushes lay across the table. Cas bent down next to Dean for his 'welcome home' kiss before going around to hug his kids. They greeted him enthusiastically before explaining the situation.
The family had gone to a harvest festival the past weekend, and Jack had really enjoyed getting their face painted with Jack-o-lanterns and spooky cobwebs. In fact, they had liked it so much that they asked Dean if he could do it for him again. Though Dean's recent forays into art had been rather successful, his specialties were graphite and digital media; paint was a whole other story. However, Jack almost never asked for anything so Dean had to think of a way to make it happen. He left the kid with a "Sure, kiddo. Let me just zip to the store and we'll see what I can do."
While wandering the aisles filled with skeletons and spooky signs, he saw packs of temporary tattoos that looked pretty cool. It was then that it hit him - makeup + temp tattoos would be just as cool as face-paint, and it was sure to look better than any attempt of his (as of right now). He bought four different packs victoriously, already excited to see how happy Jack would be. On his way home, he called Claire to come downstairs with all her makeup supplies. Jack liked using them sometimes, and even Dean had to admit that eyeliner really made his eyes pop (according to Cas). When questioned, Dean explained his plan and got her fully on-board. Apparently there were some new fall-colored pallets she'd wanted to try on and this was the perfect opportunity.
So that's how the family found themselves all gathered around the table, cutting up temporary tattoos and deciding which colors would best go together on their faces. Cas decided to join in on the fun and grabbed the blue asters he'd seen before. Claire helped him put on a thin line of eyeliner and a light layer of cornflower eyeshadow before tattooing the outside edge of his eyelids with the flowers. Dean had opted to put swirling leaves all across his cheeks and the bridge of his nose. They blended prettily with his freckles. Coupled with the verdant eyeshadow and brown eyeliner, Cas thought his husband looked much like a fall-nymph.
Jack was going for more of a spooky theme. He blended the edge of his eyeliner with bat wings. A large spider's web covered his left cheekbone, and a smaller web peeked out from his right hairline. Claire copied Dean's style with flowers, saving the more gruesome tattoos for the days closer to Halloween. When they were all done and had cleared the table, the kids ran off to video chat Jody and her crew to show them what they'd done.
Left all alone, Dean and Cas took a moment to just look at each other. Getting to spend a whole afternoon with their little family was no longer a novelty, but the feeling of awe and filled-hearts would never go away. Stepping closer together with soft smiles, Cas raised his arms to circle Dean's waist as Dean's went around Cas' neck. Dean started swaying softly, whispering to Cas that their designs matched.
"Y'know Cas, there's actually a connection between your flowers and my leaves."
"Yes Dean, they are both biological organisms that exist in fall."
"You're not wrong but I was going for something a little more romantic than that."
"My Dean? Romantic? Who are you and where is my husband?"
"Uh huh and who exactly proposed to who?"
"To whom."
"ANYWAYS as I was saying... There's this song called Moondance and there are two lines next to each other that mention October skies and falling leaves."
"Won't you sing it for me?"
Ducking his head next to Cas' ear so the tune would stay in the warm bubble that surrounded the two, Dean sang.
Bonus (implied nsfw):
That night, Cas sat tucked under the covers as Dean climbed into bed. The edge of his worn t-shirt rode up as he reached to turn off the lamp, and Cas caught sight of sleek lines curling around his hips. Unable to resist, he brought his hands to rest lightly on Dean's waist, lightly tracing the ink with his palms. Dean's breath hitched as he pressed into the touch.
Cas pushed the shirt up higher until he could see the entire design of his wings on Dean's body. Fingers were no longer enough, so he bent down to mouth at them instead.
"No fair, Cas. You know what that does to me."
"I never said I wasn't going to deliver. The kids are asleep, right?"
"Yeah, I think so?"
"Dean... you remember what happened last time you 'thought so'."
"It's not my fault I'm so good at getting you all worked up to the point that you couldn't hear Jack's footsteps. At least we were still wearing clothes that time..."
Shaking thoughts of their kids from his head, Cas returned to brushing his lips across Dean's skin. Dean threaded his fingers in Cas' hair, gently guiding his husband to where he needed him to go. Smiling up at rapidly darkening eyes, the angel allowed himself to be guided down, adding a few more temporary marks along the way…
And so the pair ended the day as always: together, happy, and so, so, so in-love 💕
