Work Text:

His Something More.

Ron leaned back in the armchair and thought about Lavender's not so subtle remark about their next homemade visit.

Lavender was a good enough girl. Nothing wrong with her but Ron wanted more from the relationship. He had grown up watching his parents, after seven kids and 25 years together they were still like teenagers in love.

His mum was from a well to do pureblood family and hadn't given a shit about his dad's less than ok financial status. They had something special. He wanted something special. He knew who could give him that something special. And if he wanted that person he would have to work fast.

Later in the evening, he steeled his nerves and mustered every ounce of confidence he could find and addressed his best friend, "Hey mate,"

He mentally cringed as soon as the words were out of his mouth though he kept a nonchalant facade outwardly.

Harry hummed without taking his attention off his parchment.

"There's a Hogesmade visit next week."

"Woah, really, I haven't noticed," Harry said with a mock excited face.

Ron liked when Harry would be his sassy self, it made him feel like pulling Harry in his arms and planting a wet one on his mouth but he doesn't like to be on the receiving end of the sarcastic remark. For now, though, he swallowed his pride. The task before was important and should be handled with extreme care.

Taking a deep breath, he tried again, "Are you going with anyone?"

Harry scrunched his brows, which made him look adorable.

"Like on a date?" He asked, finally gracing Ron with his full attention.

"Yeah."

Harry negatively shook his head.

"Would you like to go with me?"

"What? Why are you asking that? We always go toge...oh"

"Yeah...oh" Ron willed himself to stay there with a calm expression no matter how much waltzing heart was telling him to dash to the dorms. Which would be a stupid hiding place anyway.

After creepily staring at Ron for a whole minute Harry blinked and said, "OK then." And went back to his work.

If Ron thought things would be awkward between them, then that didn't happen. Things were normal. Little too normal for his liking. It's been three days since he had asked Harry out on a date and Harry was treating him like his best mate and not a least like potential something more.

Maybe Harry had changed his mind and didn't want to go on a date with him. Or maybe he never intended to and said yes so as not to make him feel bad and was thinking of letting him down nicely after a few days. Or maybe Harry had thought that if he behaved nothing happened then Ron wouldn't bring up the topic again and he wouldn't have to break his heart. Or maybe...

He wasn't able to finish his depreciation thoughts because the object of his said thought was leaning outside the herbology classroom.

Harry smiled as saw Ron and fell in steps with him. It would have been completely normal had it not been for the fact that the greenhouse was at the opposite end of the castle from Harry's astronomy class. And they have to cross the great hall to reach there. So there was no reason for Harry to wait for Ron outside his class, no reason and no excuse.

These scenarios continued to transpire. Harry would wait for him in the common room before going for breakfast, Ron would sometimes plate Harry's food for him. Once, he had boldly managed to take Harry's hand under the table and was rewarded with a squeeze and smile.

Today was the day of the date. He couldn't even hide anywhere thanks to sleeping in the same room with his potential something more. So he did the next best thing and ran to breakfast early and waited there for Harry.

Harry arrived halfway through breakfast. After filing his plate he sent a significant look in Hermione's direction, who was distracted by daily profit.

They had discussed Hermione's situation and decided to tell her at breakfast, rooting for shock value, that they would be able to escape if things went south. Their Gryffindor courage got leeway today. The problem of her being left alone was solved as she already had a date with Terry boots.

Gulping his food, he cleared his throat to get Hermione's attention. Which he failed to do as Hermione still had her head buried in the newspaper.

"Hermione."

"What?" She asked, irritated.

"Harry and I are going to Hogesmade together."

Hermione blinked. "And"

Harry sighed, "Hermione we are going to Hogesmade as in going to Hogesmade together." He intertwined their hands for emphasis.

"What! When! How!" Wow, that was enough to alert everyone in the great hall.

"Around two weeks ago."

"You are going to tell me everything."

"OK."

"That went well."

"Better than I hoped," Harry said as he wound both of his arms in Ron's left one.

"I asked you so I'm going to pay." They were entering the village when the argument about who would pay had started.

"Well, you pay for food. I pay for the things we buy today." Harry declared and even widens his eyes for extra effect.

"Fine."

Harry's resolute expression immediately melted. He was not ready for the kiss that Harry planted on his cheek in excitement over his victory. For the next few minutes, he was oblivious of where Harry dragged him as he dwelled in the feel of Harry's lips on his skin.

"How would you react if I took you to madam pudiffuts?"

Harry's glare would have chilled any other mortal, but he was Ronald Weasley, Harry's best friend and soon to be something more.

He heard all of the ways Harry could murder him and hide his body and replace him with Weasley's as they made their way to the sweets shop, occasionally telling him to note how everyone would mourn him.

"I only asked you so that my status will go infinitely higher if I am the one to officially bring in the family."

"Who else was it gonna be?"

This for some reason warmed Ron's heart.

They were only partially conscious of the looks they were receiving. Harry had long ago learned to tune them out, he had too but that didn't stop from some whispers reaching their ears.

"Not my ideal date location, but whatever suits your fancy," Ron comments when Harry drags them to the shrieking shack.

"Shut up. There's a reason I brought us here."

"Enlighten me."

"You remember our third year."

Harry turned to face him when he nodded.

"I think that was the time when I fell in love with you. When you stood in front of Sirius." Harry turns to face him with an indecipherable look on his face.

It takes a few minutes for Ron to grasp Harry's words.

"When you what?" He shrikes in what he hopes to be a manly voice.

Harry takes both of his hands in his and looks straight into his eyes.

"When I fell in love with you. I might have not known then but I knew that you were someone special. You were and still are the things that I would miss the most." Harry took a step closer to him.

"The day you asked me to homemade, I was so gobsmacked. I mean my best friend asked me out. The more I thought about it the more it started to make sense."

"You followed me to acromantulas nest." Ron shivered at the mention of them. He still has frequent nightmares about Argog and his kids.

"You stood in front of an Azkaban escaped criminal, you are the thing that I would miss the most and last year. Lastly, you were my lifeline. I don't know how you would have made it through most of last year if I didn't have you by my side."

"You, you are my best friend and hopefully something more." Harry pulled his left hand to his lips. They felt cool on the back of his hand.

As if in trance, Ron released their joined hands, putting them around Harry's waist. Harry's breath fanned his chapped lips as he pulled him closer. He leaned down and joined their lips.

Harry melted into the embrace, kissing back frivolously. He ran his hand over Harry's back and side, lifting him a bit. Yelping, Harry held tightly onto his shoulder.

Ron released him when breathing became an absolute necessity. Grinning, he put him down on his feet to see Harry's adorable face smiling at him, eyes shining in happiness.

Closing his eyes he rested his forehead on Harry's and felt like the happiest being on the earth. The reason for his happiness encircled in his arms his Harry, his best friend, his something more.
