Chapter Text

He knows he’s going to die.

As the first half of the Stygian Tiger Seal shatters, he feels the force of the resentful energy slam directly into his chest. Blood quickly fills his mouth, robbing him of the little bit of breathable air the Burial Mounds allowed him to breathe.

He flies through the air, crashing through several burnt, spindly trees before his back slams right into the stone walls of his cave, shattering with the force of his collision. He feels his spine snap, feels the numbness in his legs afterward. Blood is filling his lungs, wet gasps come out haggardly as he suffocates.

He hears the dead before he feels them.

He knows very well the sharp nails and teeth they bare. The strength in their arms and legs, the abilities he’s nurtured in them for the past three years. They would leave nothing left of him.

Thousands of them clamber onto him at once. His arms and legs begin to be pulled in separate directions, his skin is starting to tear. Spirits pound against his chest and claw at his ribs.

His skin is being peeled off, little by little. His bones are being shattered and consumed. He’s growing cold at an alarming rate, howls of the resentful dead fill his ears.

As his heart is devoured whole, he closes his eyes for the last time.

...

”Wen Zhuliu, “he feels his lips move, hears himself say, “Do you really think you can protect his dog life from me?”

His eyes open. He’s blinking. Standing before him in a darkened room filled with talismans and flickering lanterns are two people who should have been dead years ago.

Wen Zhuliu is like a wall before him, arm swirling with his foul power. Wen Chao is sniveling on the floor, body rocking and jolting at every second longer he spends staring at him.

“Better to die trying, “he knows he’s heard him say that before

Confusion immediately fills his mind.

‘Is this the afterlife?, ‘he questions himself, ‘am I watching my life unfold?”

If that was so, then why wasn’t his childhood included? Where are his parents, his life at Lotus Pier? His months at the Cloud Recesses? The Archery Competition? The Indoctrination?

He flexed his fingers. Rolls his shoulders. Narrows his eyes. Body parts that should have been consumed whole by his ghost army obey him willingly. Air fills his lungs instead of blood; there is no hole punched into his chest. Resentment sings, curls, and dances around him instead of screeching, piercing, and stabbing into his very soul. He feels the achingly familiar feeling of his empty dantian.

To his left, a ghostly woman in red shimmering silks lounges against his leg, running her sharp nails along his thigh, smirking away at the lacerations she’s run along Wen Zhuliu’s bicep. To his right, a deformed toddler clings to his ankle, crunching away at one of Wen Chao’s severed fingers. Both are swimming in resentment. Both are ready and rearing to kill at his command.

‘This is, ‘he finds himself thinking, 'Five years ago.’

He should be dead, his soul ought to be in tatters. There shouldn’t be a single piece of him that survived the Stygian Tiger Seal’s revenge.

But he was alive. He was alive and in the past.

Everyone else was alive as well.

His heart burns.

Wen Zhuliu gets tired of his silence and charges. He stands still as a stone as he approaches. He knows what happens next.

The roof crashes open, and Wen Chao hollers in shock. Zidian wraps around Wen Zhuliu’s neck and he’s raised up high in the air, a strangling gasp tearing from his throat.

Two people fall into the room, dressed in armor he hasn’t seen in half a decade.

Jiang Cheng looks back to make sure that Wen Zhuliu can’t escape before calling to him, “Wei WuXian!”

For a second, he doesn’t see the teenager in front of him. He sees a young man bearing whip and sword leading an army to his doorstep and gas is poured onto the flames in his heart.

“Wei Ying, “he turns to see the Second Jade of Lan

The Light Bearing Lord is as immaculate as ever. Bright, golden eyes, straight posture, elegant clothing waving in the night air. A part of him is struck by him for the barest of moments before he pulls himself together.

“Lan Zhan, “he breathes

Lan WangJi throws a talisman at him.

Hanguang-jun is glaring at him.

As he stares into molten gold daggers, he can’t help but remember seeing that same expression on the man as his gleaming blue and silver sword tried to destroy his ChenQing. He remembers lithe hands trying to snatch his only defense out of his hands as he battled thousands on his lonesome at Nightless City.

He crumbles the talisman he threw and tosses it into a corner.

Jiang Cheng smacks him in the chest and he has to take a deep breathe and mentally restrain himself so he doesn’t lash out.

“You brat!, “Jiang Cheng hollers, “Where have you been all these months?!”

The sight of his former shidi, eyes narrowed, Sandu in his hand and Zidian crackling behind him, does not bring him joy like it once did. In fact, it makes him sick to his stomach.

“Sect Leader Jiang, “he finds himself saying before turning the Second Jade of Lan, “Lan WangJi.”

Jiang Cheng looks bewildered at his address before scowling again, “Here, take your sword. I’m tired of carrying it around.”

The sword slaps into his hands with a muted thud, the red and white tassel brushing against his hand. Subian is as perfect as she always is, her sheath perfectly polished and gleaming in the lanterns’ lights. He grips ChenQing tighter.

He stares at Subian, feeling both a familiar reunion and a loss, “Thanks., ”he mumbles

“Wei Ying, “Lan WangJi stalks towards him

“What?, “he says almost harshly

The Lan heir doesn’t falter, “You were the one who drew those talismans.”

“Yes, “he answers for the second time in his life

“You killed all those Wen soldiers, “Hanguang-jun demands

“I did, “he answers, because it’s the truth

“Wei Ying, “he already knows what he’s going to say, “This path, there are prices to pay for this sort of power.”

He answers what he knows is true, “I can control it.”

“Wei Ying, “the Lan steps even closer, “There are some things beyond your control.”

He feels a familiar irritation in his chest, but he takes a deep breath before replying, “I know what I’m doing. Do not concern yourself with me.”

He walks past the two, Jiang and Lan eyes widen as he slowly draws Subian from her sheath. The sword feels dead and heavy in his hands, starting to drain at him immediately, but at least the blade is still sharp. He stops in front of Wen Zhuliu. The man flails as he tries to get out of Zidian’s hold.

“You pay your debt to Wen Ruohan by spilling innocent blood, “the man grunts as he pushes Subian against his neck, “You deserve this.”

He slashes and blood sprays across the room. Wen Zhuliu’s arms fall to his side, his body swinging back on forth on the electric noose.

Wen Chao shrieks as loud as a banshee as he approaches, tries to curl in on himself as he looms over him.

“This is your punishment for all your wrongdoings, “the Second Wen heir whimpers, snot dribbling down his face as he raises Subian above his head, “Know, this is my mercy, for I could have done far worse.”

Wen Chao gives a final pathetic cry before he drops his blade, ending him once more. The room is still chillingly still; he can feel both Jiang Cheng’s and Lan WangJi’s eyes drilling into him as he wipes blood on his robes and puts Subian back where she belongs.

“Wei Ying, “Lan WangJi tries to step forward once again

“No, “he says, stuffing ChenQing safely back against his waist, “We will not talk about this.”

Lan WangJi clenches his fists, but says nothing more. Jiang Cheng walks over to Wen Chao’s slumped corpse and gives it a harsh kick; blood stains his boot.

“Pathetic, “Jiang Cheng sneers and rubs the dirt on Wen Chao’s robes

Looking at him out of the corner of his eyes, he says nothing. Rolling his shoulder, he gives a sharp nod to the Red Woman and Ghost Child and they disappear. Walking past Lan WangJi, he heads immediately to the stairs.

He needs fresh air.

The Unclean Realm is as eerie as ever. Guards are lined along the looming stone walks and at every entrance, sabers sharpened and ready to be drawn at a moments notice. Grey clouds cover the sky, an impending storm on its way.

As both Jiang Sect Leader and Second Jade touch down, he cautiously hops to the ground. Brushing non-existent dust from his robes, he observes the area, recognizing faces from a siege that hasn’t occurred yet.

“This way, “Jiang Cheng says and he follows.

Part of the training ground had been turned into a medical area; tents are lined up in the far corners to hold medicines and surgical tools. Injured soldiers laid about, the smell of blood and sweat permeated the air along the the stench of alcohols and medicinal powders.

Tending to an injured Nie disciple was a woman dressed in lilac robes gently wrapping the gash along his arm. He hissed as she lowered the limb and pat his shoulder in encouragement. Reaching down to grab another piece of cloth soaked in medicine, she gave a light hum and as she worked.

“Shijie, “he says involuntary, momentarily shocked at the very sight of of her

The woman freezes; then, turning so slowly he could almost mistake her for a low-level corpse, she looks upon him with widened eyes.

“a-Xian, “Jiang Yanli says, almost in a whisper

For the slightest of seconds, he sees a sword stabbing through her throat.

She hops to her feet, robes hiked up as she runs towards them, “a-Xian! Oh you found him!”

Yanli crashes into him, feeling at his arms and face as she searches for wounds she will not find, but he most definitely still feels.

“Oh a-Xian, “Yanli says with tears in her eyes, “Where have you been?”

He doesn’t answer her, merely stares into her once dead eyes, and that earns him a concerned look.

“a-Xian?, “Yanli places a hand on his cheek

“a-Jie, “Jiang Cheng pulls her hand away, “He’s just being weird.”

Jiang Yanli bites her bottom lip at that; wringing her hands, she looks like she wants to ask more.

“Wei-Xiong!, “a clamor draws the groups attention as Nie Huaisang breaks from the entrance of his clansmen’ rooms hall and runs for the first time in his life

“Wei-Xiong, “the Nie heir appraises him, opening his fan and waving it in his direction, “You’re alive.”

He still does not say a word. The second Nie heir is immediately uncomfortable with his silence.

“Huaisang!, “the sound of the Nie Sect Leader’s deep voice makes everyone else jump, and makes him secretly clench his fists

“Da-ge, “Huaisang looks back, "It’s Wei-Xiong!”

Coming up to the small group with the First Jade of Lan, the Nie Sect Leader raises a brow in his direction, “You found him?”

“Yes, “Jiang Cheng replies giving him a side-eye

The Nie Sect Leader is adorned in forest green silks and gold accented armor plates, a stark contrast to the silver and black of the QingheNie disciples. The Lan Sect Leader himself is a contrast to the countless white and pale blue armors of his sect, dressed in deep dark blue robes with silver armor plates. Seeing them both so ready for battle sends him back to Nightless City for a brief moment. He hears people calling for his head.

“Kill the demon!”

“Make sure he’s dead!”

“Kill the demon!”

“Make sure he’s dead!”

“Young Master Wei, “Lan XiChen gives the him a warm smile, “I’m glad to see you safe.”

“Zewu-jun, “he says tersely

The First Jade of Lan blinks at him, seemingly confused and concerned about his tone. Nie MingJue and Huaisang raise a brow, the younger covering the lower half of his face with his fan.

“Xiongzhang, “Lan WangJi walks over to his brother, but his eyes are firmly on him, “Wei Ying is unwell.”

He knows where this conversation is going to lead, and he still has no intention of going to Gusu.

“Young Master Wei, “Lan XiChen roams over him with his eyes, “Are you in need of medical aid?”

“No, “ he answers firmly

“Wei Ying, “Lan WangJi looks ready to argue with him again

“I’m fine, just a bit tired, “the he grunts and grinds his feet into the stone training ground

Nie MingJue seems to notice he’s on the edge of his courtesy and turns to Jiang Cheng, “The rooms next to yours should be empty.”

“Thank you for the hospitality, Nie Zongzhu, “Jiang Cheng snaps his head to look at him, roughly grabbing at his arm and dragging him away

“I don’t know what your fucking problem is, but you need to get a grip, “Jiang Cheng was practically snarling as he stomped down the hall

“a-Xian, did something happen?, “Jiang Yanli says from behind, struggling to keep up with their pace

He did not reply again, pursing his lips as their footsteps echoed down the hall with every one of their steps.

“Ok, enough!, “Jiang Cheng turns and shakes him harshly, “What the fuck is wrong with you?”

He still did not answer, simply blinked as the Jiang Sect leader gripped his arm even harder.

Jiang Cheng, “Are you trying to be difficult on purpose? This isn’t time to be fucking playing around-”

He snatches his arm out of Jiang WanYin’s hold. Taking a step back, he gave a sharp glance to the two Jiang siblings, freezing them in place.

“I’ll be in my room, “he says quietly

Walking around the last remnants of the Jiang Clan, he strode down the stone halls to the room he once resided in at the beginning of the first war. Stepping into the room, he quickly closes the door and locks it so no one will disturb him.

Letting out a harsh breath, he sits down on the firm mattress and lets out a haggard breath and falls back, hair flying all about him. He closes his eyes, and memories dance on the back of his eyelids. A stern woman. A quiet man. A crying child. A charming granny. An alcohol lover. A family...

Clenching his fists, the air of the room seems to leave his lungs and his entire being is set on fire once more.

...

It takes him a week to get to Yiling.

“I need to speak to Wen Qing, “he says to the two soldiers at the front gate

They eye him suspiciously, no doubt by this time the fate of Wen Chao had reached far and wide within the Wen army. Dressed in black and blood red robes, they were right to be wary of him.

“Where do you hail from?, “the first guard places a hand on his sword’s pommel

“Nowhere, I’m a traveler, “he lies easily, “I wish to speak with Wen Qing about her medical practices.”

They narrow their eyes at him. He nonchalantly places his had against his hip next to ChenQing. He wouldn’t kill them if he didn’t have to, but if they wouldn’t let him pass, he would have to rough them up.

“Young Master Wei?, “the sound of Wen Ning’s voice calms the ever-burning fire in his heart

“Wen Ning, “he smiles up at the man who looks at him in amazement

“Young Master Wei, ‘Wen Ning strides down to him, looking him over hurriedly, ‘You’re alright? You’re ok?”

“I’m fine, “he says, “I just need to talk to you and your sister. It’s very important.”

Wen Ning nods quickly, “Ok. Ok. RIght; come on in. “he waves off the two guards and they release all the tension in their bodies

Wen Ning leads him through the familiar doors and halls of the supervisory office. He can smell the readily made tinctures and boiling pots of whatever concoctions the Wen doctor was making up. A memory of strong paste being forced past his lips has him smirking just the tiniest bit.

“Jiejie, “Wen Ning tentatively pokes his head in the door at the end of the hall, “We have a guest?”

“Guest, “Wen Qing’s stern voice is like cold water on a hot day, “Who is it?”

“It‘s...”Wen Ning looks back at him for moment and he nods and smiles wider, “It’s Young Master Wei.”

There’s a pause then, and he knows that she must be thinking of the last time that they saw one another. Her hand deep inside his dantian pulling out his golden core while he bites down on a towel and clings to Wen Ning for sanity and reassurance.

He pats Wen Ning on the shoulder and pushes them both inside. Wen Qing’s eyes sharpen as she takes him in.

“Wei WuXian, “she says slowly, stepping away from her mixing table

“I have important information to share with you, “he says, sitting down on the floor

Wen Qing raises a brow at him, but says nothing. She’ll listen to him before deciding to act, and he’s only got one shot at this.

“This is going to sound insane, “he knows her methods to his insanity and has no intention of being paralyzed again, “But it’s true.”

Wen Ning stares at him curiously from the doorway, shutting the door and locking it, and then pressing himself against it in case anyone tries to listen in.

He sighs in remembrance.

He takes a huge breath before saying, “We are all going to die in five years.”

They both flinch at that.

Wen Qing frowns, “You-”

“Not just us, “he interrupts her, “But the rest of your family, Granny Wen, Uncle Four, Aunt Biyu, all of your branch will be slaughtered by the sects.”

They’re frozen as he finishes listing off members of their family he should not know of. It’s harsh, the way he says it, but he knows that Wen Qing wouldn’t want him to sugarcoat anything when it comes to her loved ones; she’d want to know everything so that she could come up with the best way to prevent the outcome.

“I had heard rumors that Wen Chao threw you into the Burial Mounds, “Wen Qing says, but he sees in her eyes she’s contemplating what he’s said, “Could it have warped your mind?”

He knows they have no reason to believe him. The Wen Sect had more cultivators than the entire Sunshot Campaign combined. They had more land and resources available to them. They idea of the sun being shot down was improbable if not outright laughable.

“I can prove it to you, “he replies, eyes almost begging

The seven day walk had given him plenty of time to figure out how to handle this situation. Wen Qing wouldn’t believe him without evidence; luckily, he had three years worth of it.

He urges both Wen siblings to sit down, crossing his legs and reaching a hand out to both of them. Bright red arrays form on his palms, and they both pause for a second before grasping his hands tightly.

He feels his mind slip as they both gasp, falling into his mindscape. Landing on an invisible ground, he grabs them both and face them forward.

“Wei WuXian, “Wen Qing snaps, “What are you?”

“Shhh, “he says in lue of answering, “Watch.”

The area in front of them lights up and morphs into a mirror. It shows clear skies first, then singing birds, the waves of waters and gentle lotus blossoms dancing along the renewed lacquers of Lotus Pier.

Then, he emerges, walking along the market place. He feels Wen Ning tense at the sight of him, two years from now, a little older, more weary and wane. He stops at a vendor selling meat buns and scallion pancakes before the sight of a figure huddled in the alley way catches his attention. Buying two buns, he shuffles over to them, about to give them a meal when recognition fills his face.

Wen Qing is draped in brown, tattered robes, dirt caked to her cut up skin, long hair in disarray, a shell of her former self.

“It’s you, “he says in shock

At the sight of him, Wen Qing jumps and grabs on to the hem of his robes. She’s shaking and near tears.

“Wei WuXian, “Wen Qing clings to him, “I know I said that there would be no more debts between us. But please, a-Ning. Please, save a-Ning.”

The scene changes, they see him rushing to Koi Tower on horseback with Wen Qign in toe. Inside Koi Tower - The Flower Banquet- demanding the location of Wen Ning, only for Jin GuangShan to demand his Stygian Tiger Seal in response. He storms out, shifting into an image of pouring rain and tormented Wen refugees. Wen Ning gasps when he spots Granny Wen and many other relatives among them.

“Get to work, Wen-dogs!, “A guards shouts and waves a peony branding iron in the prisoners’ direction

The scene plays on and he feels the horror consume Wen Qing when Wen Ning’s dead body is displayed before her. He narrows his eyes as he watches himself kill the guards and gather everyone onto the horses. They rain drowns out the scene and the Burial Mounds arises out of the dead waters.

They see the years pass. They see the home they built upon bones and ashes, the love they had nurtured towards one another.

They see Wen Ning’s consciousness revived. They see a-Yuan laugh and cry as he grows older. They see Uncle Four perfect his wine. They see Granny Wen craft a new toy for the toddler. They see Wei WuXian and Wen Qing working to make every day a little bit more livable.

They see Jin ZiXuan’s death.

They see Wen Qing and Wen Ning’s departure.

They see him arrive at Nightless City only to see the Wen Siblings ashes get scattered.

They see Jiang Yanli’s death and the havoc he wreaked afterward.

They see him trying to cobble up a plan for three months to save the rest of their family. They see the army marching up their home with sword, arrows, and fire, destroying everything they had worked so hard to create.

They see him destroy the seal.

A corpse's hand rips through his chest and the memories shatter into pieces. The floor beneath them brakes and they fall back to consciousness.

As he slips out of the trance, he immediately feels Wen Qing flick his forehead.

“What are you, “he’s about to complain, but she places her hand on the back of his head and pulls him forward

He feels Wen Ning squeezed up against him and realizes she’s hugging them both as tightly as she could, as if they would disappear if she let up even a little bit. He lets himself relax, finally completely safe.

“You are a fool, Wei WuXian, “she’s smiling when she finally releases him

“Should I count this as the first or one thousandth time you’ve called me that?, “he smirks at her

Wen Qing shakes her head before sniffing and putting on her normal face, “So, what do we do now?”

Wei WuXian is missing from the Unclean Realm the next morning.

A quick search of his room revealed that his bed was hardly slept in, and his sword was left on the nightstand.

“He must have slipped out during the changes of the guards, “the Nie disciple on duty says to his disgruntled sect leader

Jiang Yanli cries and Jiang WanYin rages, but there isn’t really anything they can do about it. War waits for no one and neither the Jiang, Nie, or Lan can spare any men to search for the missing head disciple. Days pass as preparations are made; men train rigorously for the oncoming battles, and Lan WangJi worries all the while while deliberating with his brother.

“It could be that his mind is disturbed, “Lan XiChen offers to his little brother, trying to sooth his ever-growing worry, “We can’t be certain what he’s endured during those months he was missing.”

Wei-Xiong, “Nie Huaisang trembles as WangJi sends a helpless look to the floor

Another month passes before Lan WangJi sees Wei WuXian again. Standing at the gates of the Unclean Realm, he looks both the same as he did at the supervisory office, yet an entirely different man. Stern faced and shock-still, he levels himself with Chifeng-zun who’s almost seething in rage at him.

Wei WuXian did not come alone. Behind him seemed to be a never-ending caravan of people. Some carts were piled high with weapons, others with what seemed to be provisions or medical supplies. One cart was filled with what seemed to be hostages, all tied up, blinded, and gagged. There were some cultivators standing around the wagons, swords at the ready.

In three other carts, WangJi spotted what looked to be civilians. There was at least one granny being circled by a young man and woman and another man who looked like he’s toiled for centuries in the fields.

The most important person, however, was standing at Wei WuXian’s side.

Wen Qing stood tall beside Wei WuXian, her sword strapped to her waist, hilt tight in her hand. Her blazing sun robes sent a spark of fury and anxiety through everyone in the vicinity.

“Attack! Wens have barged the front gate!”

Chapter Text

The sight of Wens at the gates nearly sends everyone into a frenzy.

“What’s the meaning of this!?, “Sect Leader Nie barks as Wei WuXian and Wen Qing both offer him a look of aloofness

The young woman bows to the taller man, her embroidered sun robes flying in the wind, “I, Wen Qing, along with my family and allies, wish to give aid to the Sunshot Campaign.”

A crash sounds, focusing Lan WangJi’s attention to a solder pointing their sword and shouting at the Wen doctor, calling her a “Lying Wen Dog”. A couple of men hold him back, growling at him to calm down, but it’s obvious no one believes Wen Qing’s words.

“Bullshit!, “the man screams as his sword is wrenched from his hands, “She’s Wen Ruohan’s niece. Why would she betray him?!”

It’s a genuine concern; everyone knew how much Wen Ruohan favored his niece, how much money he flaunted on her and her various theories. The idea that Wen Ruohan’s own blood would betray was almost as laughable as shooting down the sun itself. Nie MingJue looked about ready to raise his saber at the two, one hand on Baxia’s hilt and his eyes turning into slits.

“If it pleases Nie Zongzhu, “Wen Qing shares a look with Wei WuXian and they both ever so slowly reach into their sleeves

Everyone tenses as they both retrieve thick scrolls and present them to Nie MingJue.

“The weak points and guard shifts of all the supervisory offices in the Yueyang, Pingyang, Yangquan, Guanquan, and Yingchuan regions, “Wei WuXian mutters as Nie MingJue goes wide-eyed, “Wen Qing offers the names of all Wen Ruohan’s high-ranking soldiers and their most likely locations and her medical expertise.”

With suspicion still lining his brows, he takes Wei WuXian’s scroll first, opening it and scanning over the information inside.

“And the validity of this information?, “Nie MingJue glances at Wei WuXian with a critical eye

“I swear on the souls of my parents, “the Jiang cultivator narrows his eyes

The Nie Sect Leader huffs as Wen Qing continues, “Those tied in the cart behind us would not agree to renouncing their ties to my uncle. I have brought them as prisoners. The rest of the carts are spoils from my supervisory office.”

The Nie Sect Leader stares them both down, but neither Wei WuXian nor Wen Qing cower or falter at the man’s hard stare.

Nie MingJue takes Wen Qing’s scroll and says, “I do not trust either of you. However, I will allow you into the Unclean Realm, under watch, until I can prove the validity of your reports.”

Nie MingJue raises a hand, “Take the prisoners to the dungeon. Take the civilians and guards to the North Quarter and these two to the South. Confiscate their weapons.”

Wei WuXian and Wen Qing, despite that order, seemed pleased. They both disarm themselves willingly; Wen Qing drops her sword and needles, and Wei WuXian his flute to Nie MingJue’s feet and raise their arms to be bound.

Lan WangJi feels a pang of worry when the Jiang cultivator is blinded and wrists bound. Seeing the man and the Wen-doctor dragged through the gates, he climbs the windowsill, about to dash from the shutters and to the ground.

“WangJi, “Lan XiChen grips his arm, “Don’t.”

He looks to his brother and pulls at his arm, “Xiongzhang.”

“I’ll look over the scrolls with MingJue-Xiong, “XiChen gives his brother a reassuring smile, giving his arm a light squeeze, “Think positively. He’s alright to the point where he’s gathering allies.”

The thought eases him only a little. He stares as the black clothed cultivator gets smaller and smaller as he’s taken away, getting further and further away from him.

...

Three hours after the altercation at the gates, Jiang WanYin demands for Wei WuXian’s release. Standing in the throne room, he adamantly requests for his head disciple’s release.

“Jiang Zongzhu, “Nie MingJue says sternly, “He’s brought Wens to my doorstep. If the information he’s given is faulty, or if they try anything, I can’t promise his life.”

Lan WangJi clenches his fists within his robes, and his brother places a hand on his shoulder again.

“We’ll be sending out a squadron to Yangquan soon, “Lan XiChen states with a smile, “If the reports he’s given are true, there will be no need to worry.”

“Nie Zongzhu, Lan Zongzhu, “Jiang WanYin grunts, “Wei WuXian has always acted recklessly and barely thinks about the consequences of his actions. Let me knock some sense into his head at the very least.”

Nie MingJue looks unconvinced at his words but agrees to a short meeting none-the-less, waving a hand at two disciples to gather the man in question and bring him to the throne room.

“That idiot, “Jiang WanYin mumbles to himself, “I don’t know what game he thinks he’s playing.”

“Has he always done things like this?, “Nie MingJue asks

“He’s always wanted to play the hero, “Jiang WanYin scoffs, “Probably thinks he’s some great warrior gathering support for a grand battle.”

Jiang WanYin continues to complain for a few more breaths, but then stands seething waiting for his head disciple. It doesn’t take long for guards to return with their prisoner. Wei WuXian is led into the throne room, blind-folded, steps slow and deliberate.

“Wei WuXian, “Jiang WanYin growls and steps toward him

A Nie disciples slips the blindfold off him, and Wei WuXian looks toward Jiang WanYin with a shrewd glance, “Jiang Zongzhu.”

“What do you think you’re doing, playing around with those Wens!, “the Jiang Sect Leader looks as if he wants to slap his head disciple

“Playing around?, “Wei WuXian raises a brow, “Bringing allies to help with the war effort is “playing around” now?”

Jiang WanYin gets right up into the young man’s face, nose to nose he grunts, “Do you really enjoy playing the hero that much!”

Grabbing the man’s lapels, Jiang WanYin shakes Wei WuXian fiercely. Narrowing his eyes, the Jiang head disciple snatches himself away, bringing up his bound hands to avoid another assault.

“You think that I would jeopardize the entire campaign for some sense of accomplishment, “Wei WuXian says slowly, “Jiang Zongzhu doesn’t know me very well if he thinks that.”

Jiang WanYin, “I know what you’re like. I live with the consequences of what you’re like. My sister and I both lost so much because of you.”

Wei WuXian says nothing to that, but his stance and demeanor gives away his feelings at his sect leader’s words. He looks down his nose at Jiang WanYin, enraging the young man further.

“Hah!, “Jiang WanYin laughs, “You’re really allying yourself with Wen-dogs? Tell me, how much did they offer you? How much of their rice did you eat? Was it really enough to step all over my parents dead bodies?”

“Wen Qing is my ally, “Wei WuXian says firmly, “She is an ally to all of us.”

“How can you be sure she will betray her blood?, “ Lan XiChen interjects, “Why would she give up Wen Ruohan’s favor to help us?”

“Wen Qing has already betrayed him, “Wei WuXian turns his head to the Lan and replies

“How so?, “Nie MingJue demands, putting a hand on his bent knee

“After the fall of Lotus Pier, “the Jiang cultivator begins, “Wen Qing’s brother, Wen Ning, came into and saved Jiang Cheng and I. He brought us both to Yiling and Wen Qing treated our injuries and protected us from Wen Chao. Wen Ning retrieved both former Sect Leader Jiang’s and Madam Yu’s bodies and gave them a proper burial.”

“Is this true?, “Both Lan and Nie Sect Leader look to Jiang WanYin who wears a look of fury upon his face

“That..., “Jiang WanYin’s face turned a dark shade of red

“I can tell you the exact location of Jiang Fengmian’s and Yu ZiYuan’s bodies, “Wei WuXian says, “Jiang Zongzhu also kept part of their robes for the ancestral hall.”

Both Nie MingJue and Lan XiChen stare at Jiang WanYin, waiting on his reply. The Jiang Sect Leader balls his fists, teeth clenching.

“Wei WuXian, “WanYin snarls, “What are you doing?”

“I don’t want anyone getting the wrong idea about my actions, “Wei WuXian states, “I don’t want anyone getting the wrong idea about the Wens I’ve brought with me.”

“Jiang Zongzhu, if this is true, “Lan XiChen says, “Then perhaps Wen Qing is trustworthy afterall?”

“Hah, a trustworthy Wen?!, “Jiang WanYin pushes his head disciple away, “I’m had enough of you. Fine, ally yourself with Wen-dogs, see if I care what happens to you! Get him out of my sight.”

The Nie disciples look to their leader, and Nie MingJue nods in approval; however, he continues to stare at Jiang WanYin with a raised brow.

The Nie disciple brings the cloth back up to Wei WuXian’s eyes and he willingly leans his head forward.

Wei WuXian bows to them after the blindfold is slipped back on, “Sect Leaders, “and is lead from the room

The next day, Jiang Yanli presents her father’s guan and her mother’s lotus crown, and Lan WangJi takes his chance to ask for permission to visit Wei WuXian.

“WangJi, you should at least wait until the squadron returns, “Lan XiChen warns, “He’s told the truth thus far, and I want to believe him, but we must be absolutely certain.”

Nie MingJue adds his own two cents, “We can’t act rashly.”

Lan WangJi looks to his brother, “I worry for him.”

Xichen gives his brother a calm smile, “He’s been through a lot. Losing his home and suffering whatever happened those past months; I can’t imagine the things he’s had to endure.”

“He is cultivating a dark path, “Lan WangJi explains, sitting down beside Lan XiChen, “He is harming himself.”

“What do you mean?, “the Lan Sect Leader places his hand together on his lap

“When Jiang WanYin and I found Wen Chao, Wei Ying was there, “WangJi explains, “He was using a dark power, using spirits to fight.”

“But Wen Chao was killed with a sword, “Lan XiChen inquires

“He killed them with it as soon as it was returned, “WangJi replies, “but he was controlling ghosts before then.”

“It was resentful energy?, “Nie MingJue questions, suddenly putting his brush down to focus on the conversation

“Yes, “WangJi turns to the broad man, “ A ghost woman and child; his eyes had even changed color.”

“That is...concerning, “XiChen frowned, “Shufu once mentioned that he brought using resentful energy up in class?”

“He did, “WangJi ran a hand over his guqin, “But I never thought......”

“He seemed to love Subian during sparring matches, “XiChen continued, “But he left it behind when he went to retrieve Wen-daifu.”

“There is something wrong with him, “WangJi strums a couple cords on his instrument, “I want to help him.”

Lan XiChen places a firm hand on his brother’s own, smiling softly again as he squeezes it tight, “If he needs help, we will give it, WangJi. I promise you that.”

WangJi nods his head, letting out a deep breath, “Thank you, xiongzhang.”

...

Two weeks later, the NieLan squadron comes back with the Yangquan Supervisory Office Leader’s head, and Lan WangJi feels a couple of weights crumble and fall from his shoulders.

Nie Huaisang himself lets out a sigh of relief when his brother reads over his best friends report with a more trusting eye. Lan WangJi is so elated he has to take a seat not far from his brother, placing a hand over his heart when no one is looking.

“Bring me Wei WuXian and Wen Qing, “Nie MingJue orders a guard who nods and leaves just as swiftly

“We should send another squadron to Pingyang as soon as possible, “Lan XiChen says looking over the map of the world

“I agree, best to strike while iron is hot, “Nie MingJue says reading the section Wei WuXian had wrote on Pingyang

Sitting in the corner of the room, Lan WangJi stares at the door waiting for the Jiang cultivator’s arrival. Nie Huaisang speaks instead, leaning over his brother’s shoulder.

“Wei-Xiong sure did put a lot of work into this, “he says looking at the thick scroll before him

“You sure know how to pick your friends, “Nie MingJue grunts, “if only you were as proactive as him.”

“Da-ge, “Nie Hauisang gasps in fake offense

Lan XiChen chuckles, “I’m certain that if Huaisang tries he can be just as effective as Young Master Wei.”

It doesn’t take much longer for the guard to return with the former prisoners. Both Wen Qing and Wei WuXian are brought to the throne room, both have been given back their weapons.

“First and foremost, “Nie MingJue stares them down, “I want to know what you plan to get out of this.”

Wei WuXian speaks first, “I want Wen Ruohan dead. He’s been domineering over us all, wants to rule as a high as the heavens. He needs to be stopped.”

Lan WangJi looks over the young man again. He stands stiff, but assure, never leaving Nie MingJue’s eyes. His sword was no where to be found, but his new flute rested securely against his side, red tassel swinging side to side. He seems almost ages older than he once did just months ago at the indoctrination.

Wen Qing replies next, “I don’t share my uncle values; he needs to be stopped before anymore lives are lost. I simply want to live a simple life with my family after all this is over.”

“Wen-daifu, “Lan XiChen nods in her direction, “With your expertise and support I promise you will have that.”

“I want to know how you got this information, “Nie MingJue spreads Wei WuXian’s scroll out on the table so that everyone can get a clearer view

“I used my ghosts for reconnaissance, “Wei WuXian replies and WangJi immediately tenses, a new weight landing squarely on his shoulder blades

“Ghosts?, “Nie MingJue asks sharply

“They can sneak into places far easier than a living person and less likely to be caught, “the Jiang cultivator continues, “They’ll do anything I tell them to.”

“WangJi...has mentioned your new cultivation, “Lan XiChen walks closer to him, “How certain are you that you can control these spirits? Resentful energy is nothing to play with.”

“I’ve thought it over for many months now, “his disappearance springs into everyone’s minds, “I’ve practiced and know what it’s capable of.”

“I expect you to keep them under control, “ the Nie Sect Leader narrows his eyes, “We can’t afford any mishaps.”

“I understand, “Wei WuXian replies, “Would you like me to go over the rest of my report?”

“Please do, “XiChen roams his eyes over the parchment, “It’s best to get everything out of the way.”

The four began to converse, Wei WuXian going over all the information that he’s collected while Lan XiChen and Nie MingJue interject every so often, offering plans of actions and battle tactics that may help them. Wen Qing offers the names of the supervisory office leaders, their personalities and her best ideas at how to defeat them.

At some point during the meeting, Nie Huaisang walks out. To go do what, Lan WangJi can’t imagine, but he knows it probably not war related. He himself sits there listening as the tetrad converses, absorbing everything.

The sun is burning high in the sky when the four decide to break for lunch, he stands carefully and straightens out his robes before walking up to the Jiang’s head disciple.

“Wei Ying, “he stops the man from leaving the room, getting right in front of him

Wen Qing observes him with a critical eye. She goes from his face, to his sword, to his guqin in a matter of seconds.

“Lan WangJi, “Wei WuXian says from Wen Qing’s right

Nie MingJue’s and Lan XiChen’s feet patter to a stop right outside the throne room, waiting to see how the conversation will go.

“This path is dangerous, “Lan WangJi begins

“I know what I’m doing, “Wei WuXian replies

“Do you?, “Lan WangJi walks a couple steps closer, “Do you really understand?”

“Am I a child to you all of sudden?, “Wei WuXian says tersely, “Are you really going to condescend to me about my decisions?”

His voice was not hostile, but WangJi watches minutely as a red sparks flashes from the man’s eyes. There is anger behind those shining orbs, a rageful inferno hidden behind molten silver. It’s not directed at him, however. What it is aimed it, he wishes to find out.

“Wei Ying, this path....there’s no exception as to how this will end, “Lan WangJi grips his sword’s pommel making the Wen doctor narrow her eyes at him

“I’m not going to argue with you, Second Young Master Lan, “ Wei WuXian says to the man, “If you can’t trust me then just stay out of my way.”

“Excuse us, “Wen Qing interjects walking around the Second Jade of Lan, Wei WuXian right behind her

The two leave out the door, stopping to give another quick goodbye to the Lan and Nie sect leaders before continuing their way down the halls. They were going in the direction of the North Quarter where the Wen civilians were still housed.

“WangJi, “XiChen pokes his head inside the door, “Are you alright?”

The Second Jade of Lan feels the bones in his fingers crack, “He won’t listen, “WangJi looks at the man’s retreating back

“Until we see him on the battlefield we can’t be certain how affected he his, “XiChen stares down the hall, watching as the Jiang disciple and Wen doctor turn a corner, “Give it a little more time, WangJi.”

“How much longer before I can not reach him at all?, “WangJi says, a tightness to his voice

Lan XiChen watches as his little brother’s eyes dim, sadness evident in his golden orbs. He does not want to dispirit him even more, but, even so, he answers honestly.

“I don’t know.”

An emergency discussion conference is called, and all the sect leaders who could sneak away from their occupied regions pile into the Unclean Realm. Everyone immediately notices the absence of one Jin GuangShan amongst the remaining great sect leaders, but no one utters a sound of dissent as to not upset the tender balance around them.

“What is a Wen-dog doing here?, “Sect Leader Rong snarls at the sight of Wen Ruohan’s niece and many people reach for their blades

“That is the topic of today’s gathering, among other things, “Nie MingJue replies gruffly

Everyone gathers round as Nie MingJue begins the meeting.

“Wen Qing and many others have offered us their help. They’ve defected from the Wen Sect, “the Nie Sect Leader says

The statement nearly causes an uproar. Many sect leaders glare and spit in the direction of the Wen doctor.

“What’s your angle woman?!, “Sect Leader Yu demands

Wen Qing stands, “As I’ve told Nie Zongzhu, I do not agree with my uncle’s actions. I wish to aid the Sunshot Campaign to victory. In exchange, I wish for a simple life for my family and myself.”

Wen Qing sits back down immediately after, her calm, dark eyes observing everyone in the room. She meets all the sect leaders’ gazes without fear.

“The next order of business, “Nie MingJue continues before anyone can say anything, “We need someone to house the Wen defectors.”

His words cause a swift reaction, many people lips curl down at the thought of having Wens amongst their men.

“Can the Lan and Nie not house them?, “Sect Leader Qin questions

“Wen-daifu needs to be much more closer to the battlefield; she’ll be more useful there, “Nie MingJue denies gruffly, “Qinghe and Hejian is too far up north.”

“We would have housed them, “Lan XiChen starts, “But because the Cloud Recesses still needs to be rebuilt, we just don’t have the resources currently to house them. So we must have them in another camp.”

Leaders begin to murmur around the room. Some look to their closest allies, nudging them to take action. Other pretend they aren’t being talked to. This continues for many minutes before another voice speaks again.

“Jiang Zongzhu?, “Lan XiChen moves a hand in the young man’s direction, “While you no longer have your sect, is it possible that you could oversee the Wens? You have the least soldiers, but you have plenty of space in your camp.”

Jiang WanYin crosses his arms at the question. Zidan crackles against his finger.

“I won’t have Wen-dogs moving around my camp!, “Jiang WanYin says, eyes blazing, hands fisting at his robe’s sleeves

Watching the new Jiang Sect Leader react in violent anger, the minor sect leaders wasted no time in following suite with their own diatribes.

“Me neither!, “screams sect leader Ouyang, “Let them work on their own. Why should we have to waste resources on them?”

“Neither will I!, “ Sect Leader Rong  shouts, “Not after what happened to my sisters!”

“Why should the Wen-dogs expect anything from us? This whole war is because of them, “a minor sect leader of Tanzhou hollers

“Enough!, “Nie MingJue irritated voice immediately silences anymore discord, “I know we all despise the Wens, do you think I enjoy having the relatives of the man who killed my father in my domain?”

Several people wince and shuffle at the man’s harsh tone. Wen Qing, despite being the relative in question, does not react to Nie MingJue’s words and sits primly in her seat, a look of impassiveness painted on her face.

“Never-the-less, Wen-daifu has offered us her loyalty, “Nie MingJue continues, “And she’s proven to me to be a worthwhile ally. They deserve resources and shelter just as much as the rest of us.”

“Is no one truly willing to house the Wens?, “Lan XiChen calls out

At Zewu-jun’s words, many people gulp and pull at their lapels. No one really wants to house the Wen Sect defectors, especially so soon at the start of a war.

“I could watch over them, “a baritone voice breaks the silence

Every turns to look at the Jiang’s head disciple, standing stiffly beside his sect leader. Jiang WanYin looked as if he wanted to strangle the man in front of everyone.

“Wei WuXian, “Jiang WanYin yells, “What do you think you’re doing?”

“I brought Wen Qing and the others to the Unclean Realm, “Wei WuXian replies, putting a hand on his hip, “I can take responsibility for them if everyone is amendable? Simply let us use the resources that Wen Qign brought along from her supervisory office; I’ll use my share of war spoils to keep us afloat.”

“Wei WuXian!, “Jiang WanYin snaps, “Don’t go making decisions without my approval!”

“Our allies need to be housed somewhere, Jiang Zongzhu, “Wei WuXian replies calmly, “I”m fine being around them, seeing as no one else is. I can form a camp near the Lans and Jiangs and keep watch over everything.”

Multiple sect leaders hummed and hawed over this. While most didn’t want to put a son of a servant in charge of anything. They really didn’t want to house the Wens and this was a fine solution in their minds.

“I think that would be fine, “Sect Leader He grunted, “As long as someone is watching over them to make sure they stay in line.”

“Wei WuXian got Wen Qing to our side so it definitely should be him, “Sect Leader Ouyang agrees

A few more minor sect leaders go along with this, if only to get the topic changed. Some still hold looks of contempt towards the Wen woman in the room, but they won’t start something with most of the room in agreement.

“Wen-daifu mostly brought medical supplies from her supervisory office, “Lan XiChen says, “So she’s the best suited to handle such materials, I see no problem letting her and Wei WuXian have control over them.”

“Agreed, “Nie MingJue nods his head, “Wei WuXian will take the resources from Wen-daifu’s supervisory office and form his own camp near our own. He’s expected to oversee all the Wen defectors that join our campaign.”

Watching the only other great sect leaders quickly form an agreement, the Jiang Sect Leader turns back on his head disciple. Twisting the ring of his finger, Zidian flashes for a quick second, purple light surrounding Jiang WanYin as he narrows his eyes at the other man. Wei WuXian simply looks at the man, saying nothing.

“Don’t let this go to your head Wei WuXian, “Jiang WanYin snarls, “You still answer to me.”

“Of course, Jiang Zongzhu, “Wei WuXian says with a flat look on his face

Almost everyone in the room can sense the animosity radiating off of the Jiang Sect Leader towards his second in command. Choosing not to talk about it, they all focus their attention back to the Nie Sect Leader.

“Now!, “Nie MingJue slams his hand down on the world map, “Tomorrow, Nie, Lan, and Jiang will move westward towards Pingyang and Yangquan. We’ve already destroyed the supervisory office of Yangquan so building a fort there shouldn’t be much issue. Our main goal is to combine our forces and free the Yao sect from the Wen’s grasp, “everyone nods along to the General’s words, “In the meantime, Wen-daifu will head to Nightless City to see if she can gather more defectors.”

At that nearly everyone breaks into raucous cheer. Throwing their fists into the air, they begin to chant over and over.

"Down with the Wen!”

“Shoot down the Sun!”

"Down with the Wen!”

“Shoot down the Sun!”

"Down with the Wen!”

“Shoot down the Sun!”

...

The rebellion marched bravely toward Pingyang, spirits high as they passed the burning remains of Wen superiority in Yangquan- a minimum amount of people separating from the battalion to begin building the war camp, before continuing on to the occupied region of the Yao sect.

The Wens didn’t know to expect them. Using the information garnered from Wei WuXian’s reconnaissance, the Sunshot Campaign soldiers were able to fly under the radar until they were right upon the Wen’s doorstep, and by that time it had been too late. The battles were harsh, buildings burned, limbs severed,  lives lost in a flurry screams, rage, and a never end bought of spilled blood. The days waged on, the campaign slowly pushed the Wen forces back towards the treacherous mountain paths of the region.

It is there, at the final battle for Pingyang that Wei WuXian first enters the war zone.

He leaves everyone consumed in horror.

The sound of his flute reverberates across the war ground. Above everyone, Wei WuXian stands surrounded by crimson and black energy, hair flying wildly in the air while his fingers rapidly span across his dizi. The Wen soldiers are apprehensive as the haunting music closes in around them.

Soon, the dead arrive, crawling and dragging themselves out of the muddied earth. Spirits are summoned like fog on humid autumn morn, ghostly vestiges crying out for blood. Moans and shrieks ring out across the battle ground as the legion attacks. The Wens don’t stand a chance against an army that doesn’t feel pain and cannot be killed; they are swiftly ripped to shreds by razor sharp claws and teeth.

Watching the slaughter taking place before them, it takes a long time before the sunshot soldiers realize that they would not be harmed before they storm into the fray. Swords, sabers, and talismans fly out aiding the undead army. A lightning whip lashes lines of soldiers at a time, a violet sword slicing through necks at the same amount of speed. The swift strums of a guqin throws many enemies into the air, a brutal strike from a dustless sword slicing them in half.

Before any of them know it, the battle is over. The Wens retreat from the unwinnable fight leaving their injured allies behind to their fate as the battalion of fierce corpses closes in on them.

The war zone quickly grows quiet as Wei WuXian lowers his flute. The battle field reeks of resentful energy, death and hatred stains the mountains of Pingyang.

"Gather any survivors and bring them back to camp!, “Jiang WanYin’s gruff voice orders out

Lan WangJi hears an ally throw up at the carnage all around them as he walks up the cliff to the Jiang cultivator. Wei WuXian stands at the tip of the cliff, looking down at the ruined, blood filled battle zone.

“Wei Ying, “the Jiang cultivator looks to him

“Lan WangJi, “Wei WuXian shoves his flute back against his waist, “What do you want?”

Lan WangJi looks down at the battle field below them, at the blood soaking the earth, the entrails and limbs ripped from their enemies.

“Are you sure you can control it?, ‘there is a desperate tone to his voice

Wei WuXians doesn’t answer him and looks back down at his army of the undead. He begins to hum, and his allies freeze as his voice echoes around them. However, everyone watches in awe as one by one, the corpses lay down on the ground, being stripped of all power and the spirits dissipate into the wind. Soon, the only thing left on the battle field is the living.

The Jiang cultivator looks back at the second Lan heir, “If I couldn’t control it, wouldn’t you all be dead already?, “Wei WuXian’s crimson eyes drain back to a familiar bright silver

Lan WangJi says nothing to that. Wei WuXian huffs and walks past him, walking down to check the status of his comrades. Soft feet thump against the craggy grounds of the mountain paths as Wei WuXian pulls injured from the battlefield to the safer corners of the war zone. Watching as he tends to man with a large gash on his leg, Lan WangJi clenches his fists as the man thanks the cultivator for cleaning and wrapping his wound.

‘Wei Ying.’

...

By the time they leave the ruined mountain paths, Lan WangJi has decided that he will not let Wei WuXian leave his sight in case he suffers any ill affects from his cultivator. The hovering annoys the man, he can tell, but Wei WuXian chooses to ignore him and tends to the injured still, giving them advice on “Wen-daifu’s suggestion”.

They get back to the Yangquan camp in relatively good time, and in even higher spirits. Soldiers cheer at another victory and sing songs at shooting down another sun so quickly.

Wei WuXian slinks away from the army as soon as they hit the perimeter, walking around the back to get to his own appointed piece of lands. Lan WangJi follows quietly behind and the man looks back to send him a quick irked look before continuing on. A few minutes more of walking and they come up to Wei WuXian’s camp. The Wen defectors have already gotten everything into working order.

Wei WuXian’s tent sits at the back, the largest one available given to him; it could house at least three people. Already inside is a bed, desk, and tons of blank parchments and inkstones. There is a small kiln and a forge outside along with what looks to be crates of scrap metal.

While not here - currently on her way to Nightless City- Wen Qing’s tent is very close. The Wens have given her the second largest tent they were afforded, and along side it multiple canopies and curtains for the many patients she would no doubt have to tend to. The futons have been set up, clean sheets waiting to be soiled by blood, sweat, and grime.

The rest of the Wen camp had their tents close together, slightly away from the overseer and medical tents. A small wooden structure filled with tables and makeshift stoves was in the center of all of them. To WangJi, it almost looked like a small tent village.

“I see everyone’s been working hard, “Wei WuXian smiles and laughs as soon as he sees their work

It nearly throws Lan WangJi for a loop, that this smiling cheery man could be the same who just slaughtered hundreds not even forty-eight hours ago.

“Young Master Wei, “a gruff looking man ways a hand in their direction, “Welcome back!”

“Uncle Four!, “Wei WuXian waves back

“Young Master Wei.”

The two turn at the creaky voice and see an elderly woman striding up to them, hands behind her back. She gives Wei WuXian a bright smile.

“Granny!, “Wei WuXian grins at her, “I’m back.”

“Welcome back, “the old woman croons, “Lunch will be soon.”

“Oh, do you need any help?, “Wei WuXian raises a brow in question

“No, “the old woman answers so quickly it surprises WangJi

Granny Wen shakes her head, “No Young Master Wei’s in the kitchen.”

Wei WuXian slumps and pouts, “You’re not going to let the wok go are you Granny?, “and the old woman pats his head

Granny Wen chuckles lightly, “No.”

Not sparing the Light Bearing Lord another glance, Wei WuXian follows the Wen elder into the camp, leaving the Second Jade of Lan at the perimeter.

Watching the young man joke around with the woman, laughing as he begged to be let into the kitchen, Lan WangJi was bewildered

‘Granny?’

The war begins in earnest, and a new future is already being forged.

Chapter Text

She arrived like a phoenix rising from the dead ashes of her execution pyre.

Nightless City sat high above the many cities and countrysides of Qishan, stood tall against many of the sects and civilian villages of China. The cultivators of the Wen Sect saw themselves above everyone, but in the end they were still human. As the enmity from the loss of the Pingyang region settled over her uncle’s army, she strode into his palace dressed in rags and covered in dirt.

“Uncle, “her calm voice reverberated across the grand throne room, “I’ve returned.”

“a-Qing, “Wen Ruohan raised a manicured hand toward her, face both curious and inquiring, “You’re alive.”

She clasps her dusty hands together, “I managed to avoid capture and went into hiding, “she says looking up through her lashes, “I’ve lost my supervisory office and all those under me, however.”

“I know, “Wen Ruohan narrows his eyes, temper rising at the mention of so many humiliating losses, “First Yiling and then Yangquan and Pingyang. Those ants really are getting in over their heads.”

“My supervisory office was destroyed by Wei WuXian, “she glares at a fake person

It’s easy to pretend to be angry at Wei WuXian. It’s easy when she’s seen her families cold dead bodies strewn across a dirty pass. It’s easy when she knows they’re currently still alive. It’s easy when one of the causes of her anger is sitting before her.

Would the cultivation world have slaughtered her family had this man not striven to be the ruler of them all?

“Wei WuXian, “her uncle’s red eyes narrow further and she spots rage behind his pupils, “He's the one who killed Chao-er.”

“Yes, “She says making a display of her clenching her fists, “He killed a-Ning and the others as well.”

She lets the animosity bloom in her eyes, a fire that can only be extinguished by righteous vengeance. Her family was her reason for living, even Wen Ruohan knows this. He knows this, and that’s how she knows that she’s gotten him right where she wants him.

An understanding light appears in Wen Ruohan’s gaze and he smiles, “A loss to be sure, “her uncle only ever saw her little brother as a hostage, “But he will be avenged.”

It’s almost hysterical at how much her uncle trusts her words, at how easily he believes her lies. But, then again, for what reason did he have to distrust her? She had always been his treasured niece, his relative who bent to his whims but never broke under the pressure of his merciless gaze. Of course she had his trust.

He orders that she be given new supplies and resources; it’s not the same amount from her supervisory office, but certainly enough to bankrupt a minor sect.

“a-Qing, “her uncle says, “Rest here for a while. I’ve some work to do before I can reclaim your office. Until then, I expect you to work on your theories.”

“Yes, uncle, “she says with the respectful bow she’s practiced for years now

She visits her cousin Wen Chang the next day under the pretense of mourning with relatives. Wen Ruohan knew how much her little brother and the rest of family meant to her, it would be far too suspicious if she didn’t take a few days out of the public sphere to seek out the only living relatives she had left.

“a-Qing, “her cousin calls to her in near tears, “You’re alive!”

She gathers Wen Chang in her arms. Holding them tight, she whispers and whispers and whispers. Her cousin freezes, still as stone as she talks on and on, but she knows that they won’t challenge what she had to say, knows her tolerance for nonsense and that she would never tell them a lie.

By the end of her account, Wen Chang is shaking a little, but they nod in understanding. They know what we have to do.

Her uncle may rule over them as high as the sun, but her family has a way of communicating through the dark corners of the city of lights, the only way to stay in contact, the only way to know they’re all safe. All it takes it her talking to her cousin for word to spread. The rest of her family knows by days end, but it takes at least a week for others, people too afraid to disobey her uncle, people who’s family wouldn’t last an hour under her uncle’s cruel hands to know:

“Shed the Sun, Embrace the Shadows of Yiling.”

It’s whispered between servants, between training disciples and doctors, between merchant and customer. As she sips her morning tea and dines over a simple breakfast of congee, eggs, and roasted peppers, she can’t help but wonder how her brother and Wei WuXian are doing.

It’s three weeks later that she tells her uncle of her want to reclaim Yiling, that a spy of his had noticed the resistance removing some of their forces from the area. Her uncle sends a sizeable battalion to reclaim the lost territory, and within a month they receive a missive that the rebellion had been squashed and that Yiling was once again under QishanWen’s control.

It’s only a little bit satisfying that her uncle doesn’t realize the letter is in her little brother’s handwriting.

She sends a couple of her cousins, builders by trade, to begin working on rebuilding their home. She sends with them the supplies her uncle gifted her.

“Uncle, “she walks into his throne room the next day, “I’ve something to share with you.”

“Oh, “he was as curious as he was enigmatic

Her uncle, she knew how to make him tick. She engages him in a conversation about her theories, in particular her Golden Core Transfer Theory. She intrigues him with the possible details of the procedure. It delights him, she realizes, that the person relinquishing their core experiences excruciating pain throughout the procedure.

He wants to use it as a torture technique. She tells him she at least wants to make sure the technique is fully plausible first least they’d waste precious spiritual energy.

In celebration for the reacquisition of her supervisory office, her uncle gifts her a grand carriage and ten battle horses. He presents her with enough ink, parchment, and medical supplies to tie her over for a year.

“Thank you, uncle, “she says, giving him the most respectful bow her body can offer

She returns to her cousin’s house after that. She is, after all, still grieving her relatives.

It’s another month later that she loads up the rest of her family and any person that “volunteered” to join her in Yiling and sends them in the direction of the poor region. No one in Nightless City thinks twice about how quickly the houses of all those people were emptied. Of course they wouldn’t, not when she was determined to get back to Yiling to work on her theories and build a cenotaph for her slaughtered family.

“I look forward to your progress, “her uncle tells her as she helps her pregnant cousin board the carriage

Wen Ruohan trusts that she will send him updates on her findings. She trusts that it will take him at least a month to find out about her deception.

It takes a day and half with no stops to reach Yiling. At the gates, a Nie disciple demands they removed their white and red robes, and they all acquiesce. It’s there, they hand off the supplies and horses gifted to her before being loaded onto covered wagons for the final trip to Yangquan.

A part of her is anxious on the next three days through woodland and mountain paths. Anxious that her uncle somehow saw through her ruse and she and her family would be slaughtered on the way to safety. But, her fears are squished as the time passes on and the only thing she hears and sees is birds and blue skies.

In Yangquan, Sect Leader Nie and Sect Leader Lan greet her at the gates of the war camps. There is a vicious smirk on Nie MingJue’s face, and she’d bet he’s imagining the look on her uncle’s face when he finally finds out she betrayed him. She wonders what it looks like as well.

“Wen-daifu, “Sect Leader Lan smiles in her direction, “We’re glad you’ve returned safely.”

“Thank you, Lan Zongzhu, “she nods, “A late congratulations is in order for your conquest of Pingyang.”

“In part thanks to you, “Lan XiChen continues, “If not for your and Young Master Wei’s advice it would’ve taken much longer.”

She nods, “For the time being, my uncle still believes that Yiling is under his control. I’ll leave you to deliberate the next course of action. I must see to the wounded; I’m certain I’ve some patients to heal.”

“Indeed, “Sect Leader Lan says, “We’re still trying to heal from Pingyang’s conquest. But, there will be a meeting for the Gangquan region in due time. We’ll need as many men up an running before then.”

“I understand, “she replies, “And one more thing. I’ve left a few of my cousins in Yiling, civilians, to help with some of the building there, “she tells them, “They’ll report to me when everything is done.”

Nie MingJue nods at her, “Understood.”

She departs from them after that. She leads her group through the Lan and Jiang camps. Some people glare, sneer, and spit in their direction. Some acknowledge them with simple nods of the head. In the end, they aren’t the people she’s dying to see.

At the perimeter of her own camp stands her a-Ning and Wei WuXian. Her little brother’s eyes light up as soon as they land on her.

“Jiejie, “he takes her into his arms as soon as she’s in within their reach

She takes a moment to feel his heartbeat and smiles to herself that he’s still alive.

“Wen Qing, “she looks over her brother’s shoulder to see Wei WuXian standing there with a smirk on his face

A couple of his fingers were covered in ink and there were slight bags under his eyes. In the three months she was gone he must’ve been working nights to make sure their plan stayed afloat and no one had any reason to malign them.

She was going to flick him on the forehead.

“a-Xian, “a small voice has Wei WuXian freezing just the tiniest bit

Looking up from his desk, Jiang Yanli stands in the doorway of his tent smiling at him with a basket on one arm and two covered pots in the crevice of the other.

“Jiang-guniang, “Wei WuXian says to her, putting down his brush and turning to give her his full attention

Jiang Yanli visibly flinches at his address of her, and it makes Wei WuXian feel the slightest bit callous, but he presses on.

“Are you in need of anything, Jiang-guniang?, “he asks tilting his head to the side

“No, a-Xian, “Yanli’s lip wobbles, “Shijie, please call me Shijie.”

He frowns at her, saying, “I’m afraid that I can’t do that anymore.”

Yanli feels the beginnings of tears swell in her eyes, “a-Xian....”

Wei WuXian watches as Jiang Yanli begins to tremble in the door way. She looks as if she wants to drop everything she has and either run towards him or away from him. Either is possible, but the last thing he needs is the Sunshot Soldiers gossiping about how he did something untoward to the Jiang heiress.

“Do you need anything of me?, “he asks once more

The young woman purses her lips and walks further into the tent, crossing over to the table in the middle of the dwelling. Placing her items down, she retrieves four bowls before taking the cloth off the basket entirely, revealing scallion pancakes.

“I wanted to have lunch with my a-Xian, “Yanli smiles tearfully at him, “If....if you aren’t too busy?”

Wei WuXian takes a moment to score over his paperwork, and Yanli does as well. She notices something that looks like a merchant’s contract, a couple of array designs she hasn’t seen before, and what looks to be a diagram of a compass.

“I should be able to work on a couple things and eat at the same time, if that’s alright with you, guniang, “Wei WuXian states shuffling through the papers

Yanli vigorously nods her head, “Yes, yes that’s fine a-Xian. I....I just want to talk with you.”

Taking a couple of nondescript parchments from his desk, Wei WuXian walks over while Yanli wipes at her eyes and sits.

“I managed to get these from our camp’s kitchen; I wanted to make something special for you, “Yanli smiles lifting the lids off the pots and steam blows into Wei WuXian’s face

Picking up a ladle, Yanli quickly spoons out two servings before covering the pots once more.

“I didn’t have the same amount of spices, but I hope you enjoy it, “Yanli says

A bowl of Lotus Root and Pork Rib Soup is pushed over to him with a bowl of rice and two pancakes.

“Eat up a-Xian, you look so thin, “Yanli smiles

He picks up his chopsticks and digs in, jamming rice into his mouth before throwing a piece of pork rib in after it. Seeing him eat without complaint, Yanli starts to eat as well.

Wei WuXian raises a hand, and, in a corner, a pitcher of water and two cups float over to them, surrounded by red energy. The container is tilted and fresh water is poured for the two of them.

“Apologizes, we don’t have any tea in my camp, “Wei WuXian says, taking a sip from his cup

It’s okay, “Yanli replies, sipping a spoonful of soup

While the two eat, Wei WuXian looks over a few of his papers, hmming as he summons a brush over and marks out a part of it. Yanli tries to sneakily see what he’s doing but the angle he has the paper at makes it unreadable for her. Forgoing her attempt, they eat in silence for a while longer.

“You have been distant, a-Xian, “Yanli starts, “I’m worried about you.”

Wei WuXian stuffs a pancake in his mouth as Yanli continues talking.

“You....you talk with everyone but the Jiang, “Yanli whispers, “I...did a-Cheng and I do something? Did someone in our camp do something? These months you seem to be getting along with everyone but us.”

Wei WuXian places his bowl of soup down, “Jiang-guniang, “he starts, “It’s not that I don’t want to talk with them, I’m usually so busy that don’t have that much free time. Most of the people I talk to come around my camp willingly. Most people in the Jiang camp stay away from here.”

Yanli nods in a solemn understanding, “a-Cheng is usually busy as well. Recently, he’s been having a bit of trouble with the new recruits.”

“Oh, “Wei WuXian raises a brow, “What seems to be the problem?”

“Well...there are some recruits that want to speak with you, “Yanli says, “They are interested in your cultivation. They want to know if it’s a Jiang secret.”

“Tell them that this path is my own creation, “Wei WuXian states, “No one else knows it; no one else may learn it.”

“I...can’t, “Yanli sighes, “These people, they say they won’t join the Jiang sect if they can’t learn your techniques.”

“Then I cannot help them, “Wei WuXian replies, “The Jiang Sect is a sect that uses spiritual energy. All their attacks require it, barring our martial arts. If they don’t want to learn that then they aren’t a good fit for the sect anyway.”

Yanli lowers her head, “I understand. I’ll tell a-Cheng, but he won’t be happy. There aren’t that many people lining up to join the Jiang these days.”

“Tell Jiang Zongzhu that quality is better than quantity, “Wei WuXian advises her, “I know that the two of you want the Jiang back to their former glory, but what use are disciples that cannot embody the sect’s teachings?”

Yanli brightens a bit at that, “I...suppose you’re right. I’ll see if that makes a-Cheng feel a bit better.”

Yanli reaches for her ladle, “Would you like another serving, a-Xian?”

Wei WuXian nods, pushing his bowl forward, “I would. Thank you Jiang-guniang.”

Lan WangJi was well aware that his uncle did not like Wei WuXian.

It was almost like a generational curse. It had started with CangSe SanRen, the first cultivator to journey down from Baoshan SanRen’s mountain after Yaling Daoren’s demise. Whatever had transpired between the two during their youth caused his uncle to have insurmountable distaste for people who carried silver eyes and mischievous smiles. It continued anew when Wei WuXian set foot in the Cloud Recesses, eleven years after his mother’s death. His uncle’s brows would furrow and his lips would turn down at the mere mention of the Jiang’s head disciple.

His face was like that now; Lan Qiren, having made the daring trek from Gusu to Yanquan and avoiding the many Wen encampments along his way was here to inform Lan XiChen of the happenings in their home region and to provide his own insights in the next war meeting. It had been four months since the conquest of Pingyang, and his uncle had just found out about Wei WuXian’s new cultivation.

“He’s an unscrupulous deviant, “Lan Qiren muttered over his cup of tea, gripping the porcelain so tight it might crack

They were seated in Lan XiChen’s tent. The three had just gone over the supply of resources that the Lan’s were saving for when they regained full control of Gusu once more and were able to rebuild their home. The conversation had shifted when the Lan elder questioned how Yangquan and Pingyang had been recaptured so quickly.

“It’s mostly in part to Young Master Wei and Wen-daifu, “Lan XiChen had explained, “Without them, I’m certain we’d still be fighting for Yangquan.”

“What does that boy have to do with any of this?, “Lan Qiren had asked

Lan XiChen had paused then, knowing exactly how his uncle saw the Jiang disciple and having a keen idea as to how he would react to what he was about to say.

“Well, “Lan XiChen began, “As you know, after the fall of Lotus Pier, Young Master Wei disappeared for some time. When he returned he left just as soon and then came back with Wen-daifu. Apparently in the month after WangJi found him, he and Wen-daifu had worked reconnaissance on the central and north west regions. Their intel has been invaluable.”

“In just a month, “Lan Qiren raised a brow, “How is that possible?”

Lan XiChen took a sip of tea, “Well....Young Master Wei seems to have invented the ability to hone resentful energy. He uses ghosts to be in multiple places at once and gather intel.”

At the mention of resentful energy, the Lan elder’s face had soured considerably, and that was how they had gotten to the conversation at hand.

“A reckless, arrogant, foolhardy reprobate that disregards the natural order of things, “Lan Qiren tugged on his beard so hard it looked like he might tear it off, “I should have done something about him back when he first mentioned the possibility!”

Lan WangJi was silent as he sipped awkwardly at his tea. His uncle continued on angrily articulating his distaste about the Jiang disciple. Lan XiChen too quietly sipped at his drink while their uncle’s diatribe went from the man’s time at the Cloud Recesses to the present time.

“Ahem, “a cough had all three of them looking towards the door

“Cousin Bai, “Lan XiChen smiled, “Is something the matter?”

Lan Bai had been standing guard outside, “The Second Young Master has a visitor., “they said lifting the tent’s flap

“For WangJi?, “XiChen raised a brow

To both Zewu-juns and the Light Bearing Lord’s surprise, Wei WuXian walked in the tent carrying a box.

“Wei Ying, “the Lan heir stood immediately, “What’s wrong?”

Wei WuXian raised a brow, “Nothing is wrong. I have something to give you.”

Lan Qiren’s face pinched as Wei WuXian walked closer to his nephew, “What are you up to?”

The Jiang cultivator didn’t honor him with a response, “Here, “Wei WuXian said, handing the box out to WangJi

Taking the small parcel, Lan WangJi saw what looked to be a compass, a flag, and two manuals. Looking up at Wei WuXian he raised his own brow slightly and the man clasped his hands behind his back.

“It’s something to help with your night-hunts, “Wei WuXian states, “Be sure to read those manuals before you use the tools.”

“Wei WuXian!, “Lan Qiren clenched his fists, “What...are...you...doing?”

“Your Second Young Master spends a lot of time night-hunting, “Wei WuXian turned to Lan Qiren with a blank look on his face, “These are to make his nights a bit easier.”

With that, Wei WuXian turned towards Lan XiChen, giving him a respectful bow before nodding at Lan Bai and walking out the way he came.

“WangJi, “Lan Qiren turned to his youngest nephew as soon as the tent’s flap was closed, “You should throw those into the fire.”

“Uncle, “WangJi says reaching into the box to pull out one of the manuals

The Stygian Lure Flag by Wei WuXian, it said on its black cover, red rope holding the entire thing together.

“It’s a night-hunting tool, “Lan XiChen comments walking a bit closer

The First Jade of Lan reached into the box and pulled out a flag, It was very large, the main part being the longest and the largest with four additional layers of fabric running alongside it.

“I’ve never seen these symbols before, “Lan XiChen says in slight awe, “Did he sew this himself?”

Lan Qiren looked over his nephew’s shoulder, examining the material with a keen eye. Memorizing every single detail of the device he swore to look up meanings about every single piece of needle work when he got the chance.

“Young Master Wei spends a lot of time in his camp when he’s not doing reconnaissance, “Lan XiChen runs his hands along the flag’s fabric, “So this is what he’s been up to.”

Lan WangJi sets the box on the table and takes the compass from the parcel. He examines the etchings, and the intricate design; there were many minor details thought would have taken a fine steady hands to imbue in the metal. Flipping it around, there was a cloud carved into the back of it with a guqin crossed over it. It must have taken hours to create.

“Will you use these WangJi?, “XiChen places the flag back in the box

Lan WangJi places the compass back in the box and contemplated. On one hand, it was strange for Wei WuXian, who often looked somewhat annoyed when Lan Wangji walked near him, to give him anything. But on the other hand, Lan WangJi was very elated that Wei WuXian had taken the time to not only make him something but took the time out of his schedule to deliver it to him personally.

“Will have to read the manuals first, “WangJi says, “But yes. I”ll test them out on my next hunt.”

Lan Qiren shakes his head, “It’s too dangerous to use something like this. You mustn’t go alone either. Who knows what’s going through that degenerate’s mind, “the Lan elder frowned

Lan XiChen sits back at the table, “I doubt Young Master Wei would intentionally put WangJi in danger. We are allies after all.”

“Did he not force WangJi to break our rules once before? I wouldn’t be surprised if he was trying to drag WangJi down with him. Using these items might make him susceptible to demonic energy, “Lan Qiren groused

Lan WangJi sat with his brother, “I will read, and if I feel endangered I will cleanse myself.”

Lan Qiren fixed his sleeve, “I still believe we should throw them into the fire.”

“It would be very rude, “XiChen shakes his head, “These obviously took a lot of time to create. To just throw them away would be a great slight against Young Master Wei.”

Lan Qiren sits down after, narrowing his eyes at the parcel, “I simply do not trust that boy’s intentions.”

“I will send a few disciples with WangJi during his next hunt, “XiChen smiles, picking up his now cold tea, “If they see anything amiss, they’ll have permission to destroy the items.”

“Very well, “Lan Qiren acquiesces and picks up his own cup of cold tea

...

If there was one thing Wei WuXian knew about the cultivation world was that their opinions changed with the wind. People who were once respected could be looked upon with scorn if the whims and wiles of the people were not satiated enough.

He knew that as long as he won every battle he entered, they wouldn’t decry him on his cultivation; in fact, they would even start to praise him for it.

And he knew that as soon as the war ended they would try and find a reason to subdue or destroy him.

He knew this very intimately, and so he hand to make changes here and there in how he worked and what he did during this war.

It was because of this that he was currently standing in the Unclean Realm’s throne room alongside the Second Jade of Lan. Around them, many of the sect leaders stared at him with the same respect and awe he garnered in his first life. They had been called here after Lan XiChen relayed his little brother’s last night-hunt to the Nie Sect Leader. It had gotten out to the other sects- Wei WuXian was suspecting Nie Huaisang-, and they had been called in for a meeting.

As Lan Wangji relayed his report from his night-hunt, he carefully watched all of the sect leaders reactions. Jin GuangShan- who had actually dined to attend this meeting- was lent forward eagerly absorbing the concise words of the Lan heir. Most of the minor sects were greedily listening as well.

“The tools do not cause any sort of disalignment in one’s qi, “Lan WangJi said with his head turned in his uncle’s direction, “I do plan on using them again.”

With that, the Light Bearing Lord finished and went to sit along side his brother and uncle. Wei WuXian was left alone standing in the center of the throne room.

“Wei WuXian, “Jin GuangShan said from his seat above him, “You really do enjoy making strides don’t you.”

Wei WuXian smiles then, despite it feeling like a knife was tearing through his face, “Jin Zongzhu is too kind.”

“No, no, “the man waves his fan around, “First creating an entire new cultivation from the ground up, and now you’re making tools?”

“Jiang Zongzhu, “the gold robed man turned to the young sect leader “I must say, despite not having many disciples, you have a diamond in the rough with you!”

Jiang WanYin spared a glance at Wei WuXian before replying, “I suppose so.”

“Wei WuXian!, “the Jiang cultivators turns to the Yao Sect Leader

“Zongzhu?, “the young man raised an inviting brow

“Tell us about your inventions, “the Yao Sect Leader waves his hand, “When did you come up with them?”

Wei WuXian clasped his hands behind himself, “The Stygian Lure Flag and Demon Wind Compass are ideas I’d thought up as a student at the Cloud Recesses. I’d only managed to find a bit of time to create them now.”

A few of the sect leaders made noises of understanding. The Yao Sect Leader spoke again.

“You must have plenty of free time, “said Sect Leader Yao

“Quite the contrary, “Wei WuXian’s smile widened, “I spend a lot of my time doing reconnaissance, I must also oversee the training our Wen defectors, manage my camp and accede to Jiang Zongzhu’s demands. My research must, unfortunately, take a back seat.”

“I wanted to ask you, “Nie MingJue interjects, “How is your report on Ganquan coming along?”

“It’s coming along well, “Wei WuXian nodded in his direction, “It’ll be ready for the meeting when you arrive in Yangquan.”

Nie MingJue nodded back in acknowledgement, “Very well.”

Wei WuXian looks back to the other sect leaders, “If that’ll be all. I need to rest for the night and then head back to my camp.”

“Yes, please, “Jin GuangShan smirks in the man’s direction, “We wouldn’t want to keep you. Who knows what those Wens are up to in your absence.”

Wei WuXian didn’t reply, but then Lan XiChen spoke, “Young Master Wei, before you go?"

“Lan Zongzhu?, “Wei WuXian turned

“You will need to be compensated for your research.”Lan XiChen started, “And you’ll need more materials to create more. Have you thought of a price for them yet?”

Wei WuXian grinned, “I have a material list waiting in my tent, I can have it sent over to you. I’ll have to think on a price for the items.”

Lan XiChen nodded and smiled, “Very well then, I won’t keep you any longer.”

“This one thanks you, “Wei WuXian gave a respectful bow before turning and saying, “Sect Leaders.”

The Jiang cultivator makes a quick stride out of the throne room, the chattering noises of the sect leaders fading out as the door closed and he started down the long stone halls to his guest room.

“Wei Ying, “the Jiang disciples turned to see the Lan heir quietly leaving the throne room

“Lan WangJi?, “Wei WuXian crossed his arms

The Second Jade of Lan walked a bit closer to the man, “I wanted to talk to you.”

Wei WuXian immediately narrowed his eyes, “About?”

Lan WangJi pursed his lips, “It’s about your cultivation.”

Wei WuXian scoffed and turned, about to walk away from the man when Lan Wangji jumped forward, grasping his wrist tightly.

“Just because your tools do no harm does not mean the energy running through you does not also, “WangJi says quickly

Wei WuXian grit his teeth, “Do you think I’m floundering around with no understanding of the things I’m dealing with?!"

Wei WuXian snatched his hand away, pushing the Lan cultivator away with the other. Lan WangJi tried to step forward again, but the Jiang cultivator quickly pulled out his dizi, placing it in between them.

“Second Young Master Lan, “Wei WuXian snarled at the Light Bearing Lord, “Let me be very clear. This will be the last time you come to me with this. Understand that I created this path. I know what I’m dealing with far better than you ever will.”

Lan WangJi took in a deep breath, “Wei Ying-”

“Goodnight, Second Young Master Lan, “Wei WuXian interrupted him before spinning around to walk down the hall again, his footsteps echoing into the night

...

It’s two days after their returned from the Unclean Realm that Wei WuXian takes a break. Lan WangJi learns this as the man once again showed up in his elder brother’s tent baring stacks of papers for his brother and saying he needed, “A couple hours of not drowning in papers and ink.”

Lan XiChen had agreed with him, usually also up to his neck in parchment before biding the young Jiang cultivator a good rest. It was a couple minutes after this that Lan XiChen demanded that his little brother rest from night-hunting and guarding the perimeter. Lan WangJi could only do what his elder brother had asked and spent the morning meditating in his own tent, and later went back to his brother’s tent to have lunch with him and his uncle.

It was a few hours after that the Second Jade of Lan decided to take a walk around the camps for a bit of fresh air and to clear his head. He passed through the Lan camp, earning a few respectful bows from both outer disciples and family before he ended up in the Jiang campground. Most of the people there did not differ to him and focused on their tasks or leisure, not sparing him a glance.

It is when he walks through the camp reserved for the various minor sects’ disciples and civilian soldiers that he hears a boisterous laughter. It is a sound that brings him back two years into the past. Taking a calming breath, he walks swiftly until he comes upon the creator of the sound.

Wei WuXian sits among many men around a fire, laughter and joy springing from their mouths. There are jars of alcohol being passed around.

“Wei WuXian, “a Nie disciple laughs, “You’re crazy!”

Wei WuXian smirks, “Crazy? Or am I just too much fun for you!”

The men holler at that, laughter echoing out into the night. Standing against the corner of a tent, Lan WangJi listens in as Wei WuXian regales many an interesting tales to the drunk men. They are all enraptured with the Jiang disciple as he spins them into a world of majesty.

“Okay, okay, that’s enough for one night, “the men let out cries of disgruntlement, “I have to go; no doubt more paperwork has built up on my desk, “Wei WuXian let out a dramatic huff to the laughter of the others present

The Jiang cultivator stood, brushing his knees off before making his way back to his camp. Lan WangJi almost made way to follow him, but stopped short when the other soldiers started to converse once more.

“That Wei WuXian is something else, “a Yao disciple throws their head back to take a swig of alcohol

“I know right. I’ve never seen such a busy body. If he’s not doing reconnaissance he’s running around his camp doing ten things at a time., “another lounges against the log

“I swear, the man barely takes a break. I know I don’t envy him, “a civilian soldier huffs

“Who needs breaks when you’ve got that Wen Qing in your camp, “the first Yao disciple

The group all made sounds of agreement. Everyone of them knew at least one person who’d had gone to see the Wen doctor in the past month.

“I heard her needles do wonders for the body, acupuncture and all that, “a Zhao disciple says reaching over for another jar of alcohol

“I wouldn’t mind a massage from her, “an Ouyang disciple whistles

“Hah! Like she’d touch you, “his friend mocked

“What if I said I got roughed up on the training field? She’d have no choice, doctor’s oath!, “the man waved his finger at him

“Wei WuXian gets to be so close to her, lucky. Too bad she’s Wen-dog, “a Nie disciple grunted

“Yep, no amount of beauty changes that, “another nodded, resting with his chin on his knees

“Wonder how Wei WuXian deals with that? Being around so many Wen-dogs instead of his own sect ,”another Zhao disciple wondered

“Hey, hey. Look Look, “Everyone turns around

The Yao disciple leaned forward, a conspiratory smile on his face.

“You think he likes Wen Qing?, “the man wagged his eyebrow

The group erupts in drunk, rowdy laughter. Lan WangJi clenches his fists to tight his knuckles crack.

“Think about it, “the Yao disciple laughs, “It’s possible. Didn’t he leave the Unclean Realm just to bring her here?”

“Can’t blame him. Have you seen the breasts on that woman, “a Rong disciple laughs, “Man, I can’t imagine what it’s like to have’em so close.”

“You think he’s sleeping with her?,  "an Ouyang disciple gasped dramatically

“I know I would be, “another civilian snorted

“Would you really sleep with a Wen-dog?, “a second looked at him with wide eyes

“Hey, I said I’d sleep with her, not that I’d marry her, “the man laughed

Another soldier leans in, snickering, “I heard from a Jiang disciple, “he raises his hand to his mouth whispering, “they’ve seen her entering his tent late at night. Definitely something going on there.”

“Lucky man. “the Rong disciple jeers, “At least he gets some type of compensation for looking over those Wen-dogs!”

Lan WangJi can’t bear to listen to anymore of their gossip and slanderous words and makes a hasty escape. His mind however is now disheveled.

Lan WangJi was not jealous of Wen Qing.

He was not jealous that during their one month together before their return to the Unclean Realm, Wen Qing seemed to have taught Wei WuXian the basics of medical cultivation.

He was not jealous that during her three month stint in Nightless City, Wei WuXian seemed to make a large effort to get to know the members of her clan’s branch.

He was not jealous that she and Wei WuXian seemed to spend an inordinate amount of time with one another. That they always seemed to be at one another’s sides when they were in their camp, whether tending to the wounded, eating with the other Wen defectors, or simply chatting.

He was not jealous that the woman could make him smile with just her presence. He was not upset that the simple mention of his flute or cultivation made Wei WuXian glare at him and then disappear from his sight for hours on end.

He was not jealous of Wen Qing.

He was not.

The sound of harmonious laughter startled the Second Jade of Lan out of his thoughts. At some point in his walk he had turned and made his way to the Wen encampment. The defectors were still bustling about, no doubt getting ready to serve dinner.

“Wen Qing!, “the familiar voice had Lan WangJi’s head snapping up

Wei WuXian stood at his tent, beckoning to the young woman not a long ways away.

“What Wei WuXian?, “Wen Qing said, mixing a salve in a porcelain bowl

“I need you, can you come here for a moment?, “Wei WuXian smiled at her

“Is it more important than what I’m currently doing?, “she asked pouring the salve into a larger bowl

“It involves bedding and thread counts, “was the only thing Wei WuXian said before crossing his arms with a smirk

Wen Qing rolled her eyes, beckoning a cousin over to get them to finish her task before walking over to Wei WuXian’s tent. Watching the woman slip into the tent and the flap close shut, Lan WangJi could feel his heart clenching within his chest. Breathing deeply, he had to force himself to turn away and make strides back to his own tent.

‘Wei Ying.’

“There are four main forts in the Ganquan region. It’s mostly used as a place to store weaponry because the region’s land is too poor for farming. The first fort is under control of Wen Chin, they have 900 men under their command. The second is under control of Wen Cong, with 780 men. Third, Wen Fa with 568 men, and finally Wen Gang with 320 men. All the forts follow the same guard schedule with guards changing out every six hours.”

In the throne room of the Unclean Realm, the Sunshot Campaign’s Sect Leader’s along with high ranking members stood around a discussion table. The room was dead silent as Wei WuXian went over the intel he had gathered on their next targeted region.

“There is an opening to Wen Cong’s fort within its southwestern quarter. The stone work was done hastily and is being weathered away by storms. If someone where to go in at the dead of night, during the changing of the guards we could rush in the main gates while most are still asleep.”

Nie MingJue looked at the map the man had provided, “If we take Wen Cong’s fort, then Wen Gang is left without aid.”

“Yes, and Wen Fa and Wen Chin are so far apart that any missive can be intercepted by us, “Wei WuXian continued

The Jiang cultivator took a piece of cinnabar and circled Wen Chin’s fort, “Wen Chin has the most amount of high ranking cultivators stationed in Ganquan. They also have two different evacuation points planned out as opposed to the other three. It’s very possible that they may try to escape into the forest and return to Qishan if we don’t find a way to stop them.”

“The Yao could try and head them off, “Nie MingJue looks to the minor sect leader who nods, “If they stay behind and work on containing the perimeter it should be harder for them to escape.”

“Wei WuXian nods, “And our main force of attack? Should I prepare the Wens for battle?”

Lan XiChen stepped forward, shaking his head, “We want to wait a little while longer before introducing the Wens to battle. We were talking of waiting till we attack Yueyang to get them on the battlefield.”

Wei WuXian nods, “Then is someone to take my post as overseer while we’re gone?”

“Actually, “Nie MingJue replies, “We want you to stay here until we break down their defenses, and then you come in to finish them off.”

“You want to try a similar tactic to Pingyang then?, “Wei WuXian raises his brow

“Yes, “Nie MingJue says, “It’ll install fear in them, to not know if you’re going to show up.”

“I understand, “Wei WuXian smirks, “But what should I do in the meantime? Any reconnaissance I due is sure to change after the region is engaged in combat.”

“About that, “Lan XiChen interjects, “We’ve all been talking, Young Master Wei. We were wondering if you had any more research ideas?”

“I do, “the Jiang cultivator replies, “I was working on a communication array.”

“Communication array?, “Sect Leader Rong calls from their place at the table

Wei WuXian turns to them, “It’s dangerous for us to be traveling with so much land still belonging to Wen Ruohan, it’s easy for missives to be intercepted. If I managed to complete it, we’ll be able to communicate from the safety of our bases.”

“I won’t promise that we won’t have to call you in, so be ready to move at any time, “Nie MingJue warns him

“I’ll be ready, “the Jiang disciple replies, “By the way, should Wen Qing be moved closer to Ganquan?”

“No, “the Nie Sect Leader says, “It’s safer to keep her here. Tell her to prepare as many medicines as she’s able. We’ll ration them out before we go.”

“Understood, “Wei WuXian nods

Nie MingJue raised his hand and begins to engage the minor sects, gaining their input into their plan and ironing out any kinks that may show up in their discussion. The map is soon filled with lines, a points stationed out for the various soldiers who would be making the undertaking of Ganquan.

“Jiang Zongzhu, “the head disciple turns to Jiang WanYin, “Is this all acceptable for you? For me to stay behind.”

Jiang WanYin purses his lips, “I have enough soldiers to hold a line. I don’t need you.”

Wei WuXian smiles, “Very well., “and then faces the rest of the sect leaders, “Then I’ll wish you a successful siege.”

...

“It’s official. We won’t be heading to Gangquan; the sects want you stationed here and want me to keep researching, “Wei WuXian told Wen Qing over dinner the next night

“That’s good, “Wen Qing said, sipping on a spoonful of broth, “I would’ve thought we would have to come up with something more clever.”

“It’s the grace of having a Lan backup your findings, “Wei WuXian took a sip of tea, “They can’t lie about anything.”

The two overseers were alone in Wei WuXian’s tent, everyone else having retired for the night. A couple candles flickered around them, and crickets chittered outside around the tent.

“How are your cousins coming along with the building?, “WuXian asked, chewing a piece of carrot

“Their last letter said they were almost done with helping the Nie disciples turn the old supervisory office into a fort and they’ll start on the the first few houses soon, “Wen Qing replied, “It’ll still be a while before they can start on your manor.”

“I still don’t see why I need a manor, “Wei WuXian grunted, “Granny and the others could use that space more than me.”

“Will the sects take you seriously without a “proper” home, “Wen Qing asked rhetorically and Wei WuXian replied with a, “Right.”

The demonic cultivator placed his spoon on the table, “I’ll have to head to Yiling soon, start putting up some barriers. It’s too close to Qishan for my liking, and we haven’t reclaimed Yueyang yet.”

“Don’t forget to take a-Ning with you, “the Wen doctor ordered

“How could I ever forget my right hand man?, “Wei WuXian laughed, “I need him by my side more than ever.”

The two sat in silence for a moment, tending to their meager meals. After a while, Wei WuXian put his utensils and down and rested his head on his hand.

“Wei WuXian smirked, “Wen Qing, what do you think about wine?”

“I think your tolerance for it is inhuman, “she deadpanned and the man laughed

“Well then, how do you feel about being my business partner, “WuXian grinned harder, grabbing a bun from the middle of the table and biting down

“Aren’t I already your partner?, “Wen Qing raised a brow at him

Wei WuXian hummed.

“Indeed.”

Chapter Text

It’s only a month later that Wei WuXian meets with Lan XiChen and Nie MingJue in front of the ruins of Wen Chin’s fortress.

“Where are Wen Chin, Wen Cong, Wen Fa, and Wen Gang at this very moment?, “Wei WuXian asks as he gives a friendly wave to a couple Lan disciples guarding the gates

“My dungeons, “Nie MingJue replies, “I’m giving them some time to reconsider giving us information in exchange for their lives. So far, their executions are scheduled for next week.”

“That’s good. This way; It’ll be quieter in the office, “Wei WuXian pointed down a walkway

“Like I said before, Ganquan is a very poor region, so I don’t believe that we should use it for farming, but I’m hesitant to suggest we use it for training as well. We haven’t gotten a enough land back to start shipping food here to feed soldiers. We could use it for weapon storage?, “Wei WuXian looked to the older men

Lan XiChen hummed, “I’m hesitant to suggest using it for weapon storage as well. It’ll take a bit more deliberation before we decide what to do with this piece.”

A couple of Lan and Nie disciples nodded to the three in greeting as they moved large slabs of destroyed rubble. The three parted to let them pass.

Nie MingJue interjected, “It’s still far too early to be thinking of that anyway. On another note, my men are finished in Yiling and patrols have been set up. You can start sending those civilian Wens there. I’m sure you’ll be comfortable with that load off your plate.”

“I’ll be more comfortable when we conquer Yueyang, “Wei WuXian twirls around to face the two, hand on his hip, “While a small region, it completely cuts us off from Yiling and leaves it unprotected against the Yingchuan region.”

Zewu-jun nods in agreement, “You’re absolutely correct. I think we should plan to attack Yueyang as quickly possible while they’re still recovering from this loss.”

“Then I’ll have to go on recon as soon as I get back. I’ll have to tells the Wens to prepare for battle, “the Jiang disciple crosses his arms and smirks

“That Meng Yao was supposed to be here by now, wasn’t he?”

“Yeah, he was. What a lazy ass. I haven’t got all day. How long is it supposed to take to bring a man some water?”

“I heard he was supposed to be some type of bookkeeper. How’d he even get to join in the campaign as a supply runner in the first place?”

Narrowing their eyes, Nie MingJue, Lan XiChen, and Wei WuXian all found themselves listening in on a few Nie disciples lounging around the corner in a destroyed garden area.

“Don’t you know who’s son he is?”

“Who’s? Is it someone really important?”

"Important indeed. He’s one of Jin Zongzhu’s bastards!”

The men didn’t care about how loud they were, or who was able to hear them. Lan XiChen looked around and immediately spotted the topic of their conversation not far down the ruined walkways. Meng Yao was walking around handing off medicine and canteens to the other soldiers working or resting about. As the men’s conversation reached his ears, he demurely looked down, but continued on with his task. Lan XiChen frowned.

“Jin GuangShan’s son is really delivering supplies to us. Hah! What a joke!”

As the men’s words rushed through his ears, a figure with a short stature appeared in Wei WuXian’s mind. A pleasant smile combined with golden eyes standing stiffly next to a smirking Jin GuangShan before a mob baying for his blood. In his hands was a simple wooden box full of Wen Qing’s ashes.

Wei WuXian’s fingers tighten on his elbows. He had forgotten about Jin GuangYao.

“He might be his blood, but he hasn’t been recognized. Didn’t you hear what happened?”

“No? What happened? Did he try and go talk to Jin Zongzhu or something?”

“It’s worse. A few years ago, he ended up going to Koi Tower on Jin ZiXuan’s birthday bearing some trinket or whatever. Jin Zongzhu had him kicked down the stairs in front of all the guests there!”

As the men continue their deprecating talk about Wen Ruohan’s killer, Wei WuXian feels a memory dredge up.

“The lack of announcement was my error. Apologies, Young Master Wei, let me get a seat for you. Oh! Do you have an invitation?”

The events of the Flower Banquet has Wei WuXian struggling not to snarl at the mention of the Jin heir, lest Lan XiChen and Nie MingJue start to question his reaction to a man he’s technically never met.

‘Jin GuangYao, ‘Wei WuXian thinks, ‘This is the man who was able to deceive and kill Wen Ruohan. And he was practically Jin GuangShan’s right hand man by the end of things.’

Nie MingJue feels a tick form on his forehead as the men continue on with their slanderous words without a care in the world. He takes a few steps forward, hand tight on his saber’s hilt.

‘If I don’t find a way to deal with him, he’ll become a real pain later, ‘the demonic cultivator begins to think over their plan of action, ‘But....I can’t just kill him. He’s far too important to the war effort. Maybe I can-’

"Grrr, “Nie MingJue’s growl has Wei WuXian and Lan XiChen snapping their heads up

The Jiang and Lan cultivators can’t help but gawk as the Nie Sect Leader brandishes his saber and slices through the stone wall, rubble flying everywhere. The Nie soldiers holler in fear as their leader descends on them.

“Are you hear to slaughter Wen Ruohan’s men are have you just come to gossip?, “Nie MingJue snarls as he looms over them

“Nie...Nie Zongzhu, “beads of sweat falls from one of the men’s forehead, he’s on his back, shivering at the might of the Nie Sect Leader

Lan XiChen and Wei WuXian tentatively step through the destroyed wall. While the Nie disciples hammer off apologies and excuses, the Lan Sect Leader strides over to Meng Yao, smiling and placing a hand on his shoulder in greeting.

“Enough! Starting today, Meng Yao will be my deputy, “Nie MingJue announces loud and clear for anyone in the vicinity to hear

The brunette whips his head away from Lan XiChen, mouthed gaped at the taller man, “Nie....Nie Zongzhu...”

Nie MingJue turned towards Meng Yao with a hard look on his face, “I expect you in my tent first thing in the morning.”

At that, Meng Yao quickly shuts his mouth then gives the man a bright smile and a deep bow, “This one is grateful for this opportunity.”

Nie MingJue huffed, still glaring at his subdued men before waving an arm in the Jiang cultivator’s direction.

“This is Wei WuXian; he handles reconnaissance, “Nie MingJue crossed his arms, “You’ll be seeing a lot of him.”

Meng Yao turns to face Wei WuXian, and the demonic cultivator sees him analyzing every inch of him with his golden eyes.

“It’s nice to meet you, Young Master Meng, “Wei WuXian says with a bow and keen smile

Meng Yao returns the courtesy, golden eyes sparkling and lips quirked,

“Likewise, Young Master Wei.”

...

“Are you sure you want to keep Granny and the others here in the camp?, “Wei WuXian asked while carving an array into a piece of stone, “They'll be safer in Yiling.”

“I tried, but they said they feel safer here with you, “Wen Qing replied, folding sheets for the upcoming movement

“It’ll take a bit of convincing Nie Zongzhu to let them stay, “Wei WuXian said, but smiled blithely at the other’s affection

“Tell him that I need a few helping hands, and that my relatives are almost just as knowledgeable as I am. I can’t be expected to create all the medicines for the campaign by myself, “Wen Qing offers

“I’ll try, “Wei WuXian nods

“a-Qing, WuXian, “a light voice has the two of them looking to the entrance

A man and a woman stood in the entrance of the tent. The woman carried a basket of herbs in her arms, and the man stood with his hand firmly on his sword.

They were Wen Huan and Wen Bao, two of the Wens that hadn’t survived Jin Guangshan’s camps in the first lifetime. Or, as Wen Qing had introduced them to him, a-Yuan’s parents.

It had been awkward, their first meeting. Neither Huan nor Bao knew what to think about the young man their cousin claimed to have cared for their currently non-existent child. But, it had taken all but a week for them to warm up to Wei WuXian and his friendly personality. Their child had been a re-occurring topic between the three.

“We wanted to tell you, “Wen Bao gives Wei WuXian a bright smile, “We were about to start trying.”

Wei WuXian gapes at the two, “What...really?”

“Mhmm, we wanted you to one of the first to know, “Wen Bao grins, “When the time comes, will you build us a cradle?”

“Absolutely, “Wei WuXian stands and starts to walk over to the two, “Huan-ge are you sure you want to stay and fight. You two can go to Yiling and start there.”

Wen Huan shakes his head, “I can’t bare the thought of staying still when I could be trying to make a change. I’ll be with you in every battle if I can., “he smiles at his wife, “I want to keep them safe.”

Wen Bao grasps her husband’s hand tightly and kisses his cheek, “And you will come back to us, every time right?”

Wen Huan smiles, “Every time.”

Wen Qing puts her folded sheets on Wei WuXian’s table, “Then I guess we should start talking about the medications you’ll have to take for a safe delivery.”

Wen Bao blushes as Wen Qing walks over and wraps an arm around her shoulders to begin leading her to her tent, “Come. Wei WuXian, you have to finish the folding.”

“Oh of course you’d leave me with that, “Wei WuXian complains as the two women leave

Wen Huan laughs walking over to pick up some sheets, “Let me give you a hand.”

“Jiang Zongzhu?”

Jiang WanYin looked up from his desk; a woman in white and lilac robes tentatively stepped into the Jiang Sect Leader’s tent, a serene smile on her face. Behind her, two rugged looking men carrying a set of large boxes on each arm trailed in behind her; the sound of clinking coins could be heard from inside two of the crates.

“What, “Jiang WanYin put down his brush and stood crossing his arms

“Jiang Zongzhu, the Lan and Nie have sent payment for the compasses and flags Young Master Wei supplied them, “the servants bowed when the boxes were set down, “Young Master Wei has also sent the flags and compasses for the Jiang disciples. The courier has also informed me that Young Master Wei requests more metal for his work.”

The Jiang Sect Leader’s lips turned down at the mention of his head disciple but nodded at the two disciples, “Fine, you two, back to sword drills, and distribute those tools!”

The two men bowed and left quickly with the other boxes, leaving the woman with the man.

“Jiang Zongzhu, “the man looked at her, “My lady requests that you join her for dinner tonight.”

Jiang WanYin waved her away and shook his head, “Tell a-Jie that I’m too busy. I’ll have dinner here tonight, “he replied

The woman clasped her hands in front of her, “My lady thought you would say that, so she has ordered me to ask you to take a break least she ask Wen-daifu to check your health.”

“I”m not letting a fucking Wen-dog anywhere near me!, “Jiang WanYin snapped

The woman almost flinched at the animosity in his tone, taking a small step back from his crackling spiritual energy. She was not used to Jiang WanYin’s temper, having only been hired a few weeks ago as a handmaiden for Jiang Yanli.

Jiang WanYin scoffed, “Fine, I’ll go, if only to keep that Wen-dog away from me. Honestly, I don’t know what everyone’s thinking, letting a Wen touch them just cause she says she’s loyal, hah!”

The Jiang Sect Leader went back to his desk, “Just because every suddenly wants to kiss Wen ass, doesn’t mean I have to.”

The woman stood there waiting to see if the man needed anything else of her or to be dismissed. Jiang WanYin picked up a missive. It was from Sect Leader Ouyang. The contents of the letter ruined the man’s mood even further.

“Seriously?! Everyone is falling over themselves for these compasses and flags like their some godly weapon, “Jiang WanYin scrolled at the missive, “Embarrassing.”

Jiang WanYin picked up a brush and a blank piece of parchment, “Tell the courier to tell Wei WuXian I want one hundred compasses and flags sent to the Ouyang in two weeks.”

“One hundred compasses and flags; that should be almost two taels worth of tools!, “the woman exclaimed, “Young Master Wei’s tools will go a long way to help the sect.”

Jiang WanYin scowls at the servant, “If Wei WuXian truly gave a damn about the Jiang he’d be here helping with recruitment and training disciples, not sleeping around with a Wen dog. I have enough trouble as it is keeping people in this sect. Half of this will go towards renovating Lotus Pier once we’ve reclaimed it, and forty percent will go towards paying the disciples.”

The servant blinked, “So, you are only giving Young Master Wei ten percent?”

Jiang Cheng turns back to his desk, “Anything he creates, any idea he has is property of YunmengJiang to use as I see fit. Any success he has is the success of YunmengJiang. He won’t complain that I’m using it.”

The servant bowed, “Yes, Jiang Zongzhu.”

...

“Are you sure this is a wise idea, my lady?, “Jiang Yanli smiled as her handmaiden hurried after her with their arms full, “To be visiting an unmarried man’s tent, people will talk; besides there have been rumors about Young Master Wei and that Wen Qing.”

“That’s why I want to talk to him, Liao Yan, “Yanli replies, “If a-Xian is in a relationship with Wen-daifu, I have to know more about it.”

As the bell outside the Jiang mess hall signaled for the disciples to gather round for lunch, the two women slipped out of the kitchen, left the camp, and headed straight for the Wen grounds. It didn’t take too long to reach it, the women stepping inside after being acknowledged by the two Wen guards out front.

In a spot of land that had been sectioned out for training, Yanli saw at least six hundred men and women going through sword drills. On another side of the camp, she spotted people in plain clothes picking and tending to various plants.

‘It’s so much more livelier here than in our own, ‘Yanli thought with a bit of sadness

Jiang Yanli and Liao Yan headed straight for Wei WuXian’s tent. For once, the kiln and forge outside were dead and none of the Wen’s loitered around.

“a-Xian?, “Yanli slowly reached over for the tent’s flap

“He’s gone on reconnaissance, “Yanli startled and her servant nearly dropped her things as they both swiftly turned around

“Jiang-guniang, “Wen Qing nodded at them with her arms crossed

The Wen doctor looked the two over with an analytical eye, “Wei WuXian won’t be back for a couple of days.”

“Oh, “Jiang Yanli looked over to the food in Liao Yan’s arms, “I see.”

“You wanted to have lunch with him, “Wen Qing surmises

“Yes...I did, “Yanli bites her, “but if he’s gone....actually, may I speak with you Wen-daifu?”

Wen Qing raises her brow, “With me?”

“Yes, “Yanli nods and steps a few paces closer, her hands clasped gracefully in front of her, “I want to talk with you. Please, have lunch with me.”

Wen Qing hummed looking over at her own tent and work, “Very well. Uncle Five, I have a visitor, will you finish the burn salves for me?”

“I got it!, “a man not far from them tending to a planter’s box of herbs stands straight and nods

“This way, “Wen Qing waves the two women over to her own tent

“Thank you for the hospitality, Wen-daifu, “Yanli obliges as she steps into the abode, Liao Yan right behind her

“It’s no problem, “Wen replies grabbing three cups and placing them on a plate before filling them with water and bringing both the cups and water pitcher to her table in the center

Liao Yan places the food on the table and begins to set out the dishes uncovering a pot of egg drop soup when she’s done.

Yanli sits primly as Liao Yan fills her bowl with soup, “That’s a beautiful hairpiece, Wen-daifu.”

Sitting atop the Wen doctor’s head was a beautiful crown made of black and silver flames. She’d been wearing it for weeks now, but no one had acknowledged it out loud. However, most took it as a further withdrawal from QishanWen’s sun motif.

“Thank you. Wei WuXian made it for me, “Wen Qing says as she sits and nods in thanks to Liao Yan for filling her bowl

Yanli’s lips twitched, “Is that so? a-Xian normally gives woman jewelry but I didn’t know he’d gotten into the hobby of making it.”

“He said I didn’t look right without something adorning my head, “the Wen doctor supplies

The three women start to eat in silence. Liao Yan peeked at Jiang Yanli out of the corner of her eyes, trying to get a read on what her lady was thinking. Yanli had a pleasant look on her face, but she was gripping her spoon very tightly. Shifting to her other side, Wen Qing’s face gave away nothing, and she elegantly sipped at her dish.

Yanli takes in a spoonful of soup, chewing on some scallions, “Do you have any younger siblings, Wen-daifu?”

“My a-ning, my didi, “Wen Qing supplies, “He’s out on reconnaissance with Wei WuXian.”

“I see. Your brother and a-Xian are getting along then?, “Yanli smiles fictitiously

“I don’t see why they wouldn’t, “Wen Qing reaches over for her cup

“That’s good. I was worried that a-Xian was having trouble with others after his return, “Yanli speaks lightly

“From what I’ve seen, he gets along with almost everyone. If there are people who don’t like him, they don’t show it, or they don’t show themselves around him, “Wen Qing leans back in her chair a bit, biting down on a piece of plain bread

“Ah, well that’s good. It’s just that I haven’t seen much of my a-Xian since he’s come back. After Second Young Master Lan and a-Cheng found him, he left to recruit you, and then he volunteered to be the overseer of this camp. I’ve only been able to spend a little bit of time with him since then; and a-Cheng only sees him during meetings., “Yanli goes on, reaching over to take a bun for herself

Wen Qing sets down her spoon with a small clink, “What is it that you truly wish to ask me, Jiang-guniang?"

Yanli immediately freezes, and Liao Yan looks at her in worry, pushing away her bowl to fret over her. The Jiang heiress tentatively sets down her own utensil and gently waves her handmaid away before looking into Wen Qing’s eyes.

“There...have been rumors, “Yanli started, “About you and a-Xian.”

“Oh?, “Wen Qing clasps her hands in front of her on the table, “Is that so?”

Yanli takes a deep breath, “I want to know if you’re in a relationship with a-Xian?”

“There is no relationship between us, “Wen Qing replies easily

The answer does not please the Jiang heiress and her lips pinch, “Really?”

“No, we’re not, “Wen Qing says, “Have people been gossiping about us working together?”

“More than that, “Yanli bites her lip again, “a few of the guards...they’ve seen you going to his tent...late at night.”

“And that should mean we’re having intercourse?, “Yanli almost winced at her blunt words but continued to sit stiffly

“You’re accusing me of something. Get to the chase, Jiang-guniang, “Wen Qing narrows her eyes at the woman

“Wen-daifu, “Liao Yan interjects, “My lady is just worried about her martial brother. They grew up together; they’re almost like real siblings.”

Yanli huffs at Liao Yan “ We are siblings. a-Xian...he has a big heart, “she stands quickly, “Wen-daifu, I am worried.....if...if you’re using his feeling for you to keep your family safe-”

“Jiang-guniang, “Wen Qing stands just as quickly, “the last thing I will do is have you insinuate that I’m using my body to manipulate Wei WuXian in my own home.”

Yanli places her hands on the table, “I...you are the reason why I’m able to mourn my parents properly, and I thank you for that. I can imagine a-Xian thanks you for that as well. You...you helped him and a-Cheng when they were in mortal danger, and I can imagine you found a place is his heart because of that. Wen-daifu, a-Xian-”

“Is important to me, just as much as he’s important to you, “Wen Qing interrupts her, “In fact, I think I may care for him just a bit more. What is this? The second time you’ve visited him in five months?.”

Yanli flinches at the other woman’s words. Wen Qing raises her head high, almost looking down her nose at the other woman, freezing her and her handmaid down to the bone.

“I think it would be best if you left, Jiang-guniang. I’ll tell Wei WuXian you visited.”

“There’s only one fortress in Yueyang; it’s mostly used for farming to feed the fortresses of the Yingchuan region, using the prisoners captured as the main workforce. From what I’ve gathered, it’s mostly the outer disciples from the great and minor sects. All of the inner disciples and clan members are being held in Nightless City., ”Wei WuXian spoke to the contingent of sect leaders

Meng Yao stood beside him, laying down an fresh map of the world as Wei WuXian continued, “The leader of the stronghold is Wen Ru, and she has 560 soldiers under her command. There are at least 800 prisoners in the stronghold. The prisoners spiritual energies are resealed by cell-block every few hours. Their weapons, unfortunately, have been moved to Meishan.”

Wei WuXian picked up a piece of cinnabar and circled the location of the fortress, “We were also unable to contact the YueyangChang Sect, so we do not know if they’ve sworn loyalty to QishanWen or not. Things being as they are, we cannot rely on them, and have to consider them a possible adversary."

Nie MingJue picked up another piece of cinnabar, stepping up beside Meng Yao, “This will be the first time we introduce the Wen defectors to the field. They’ll be on the front-lines along with Wei WuXian. When most of the fighting force is picked off, the Nie and Lan will move forward to join in. If possible, Wen Ru is to be captured and imprisoned in the Unclean Realm. The Jiang will intercept the YueyangChang; if they are an ally, Chang Zongzhu should be escorted to the Unclean Realm to get their help in the alliance. If they are an enemy, we will have no choice but to treat them the same as any Wen-dog.”

The Nie Sect Leader started to draw out battle points, “The Yao will continue to watch the perimeters for any stragglers to finish them off. The Rong, Zhao, and others will continue to defend the Ganquan, Pingyang, and Yangquan regions in case of invasion.”

The Nie Sect Leader looked up, “Any questions?”

Sect Leader Zhao tapped the table, “Yes. How can we be sure none of those Wens will try to betray us and go back to Qishan?”

“That’s why we want them on the front-lines, “Lan XiChen spoke, “Yueyang is very close to Qishan. If their are any loyalists, surely their true colors will show. If they try to turn on us, we will have to kill them. This is also a test for the Wen defectors to prove their loyalty to the campaign.”

Sect Leader Rong looked to Wei WuXian, “Are the Wens ready for battle?”

The Jiang cultivator nodded, “Every soldier has been fitted for armor and has a serviceable sword. We’re ready to move out a moments notice.”

“Nie-Zongzhu, “Wei WuXian looked over, “Should I have Wen Qing prepared to set up a station in Pingyang?”

“Yes, “Nie MingJue affirmed, “Leaving her in Yangquan will take farther travel, and some people won’t have that amount of time.”

“Then I’ll get her prepared as soon as I return, “Wei WuXian smiled and turned back to the others

“Anymore questions?”

...

The sound of ChenQing rang out across the foggy battled fields. The demonic flute, covered in dark energy, called out to the dead. From it’s sweet sounds, once again arose an army of vengeful corpses and specters.

Wei WuXian walked slowly through the ensuing carnage, fingers landing deftly on the holes of the instrument. Weaving through enemies and allies alike, the man danced through the throngs of soldiers to the melodia. The dead circled him like an impenetrable wall, hacking away at any opponent that tried to strike him with a blade.

Two full days and nights passed like this. With the continuous onslaught the Wen army was beaten back into a corner. In fear, many dropped their weapons and surrendered. Some, not wanting to be taken captive, quickly took their own lives to the terror of their allies.

With a sharp whistle from his dizi, the corpses forced the remaining soldiers to kneel on the ground, growling at them until they sealed their spiritual powers, and raised their arms high in the air.

Taking his flute away from his lips, Wei WuXian immediately began to hum. His undead army once again began to lay themselves down to rest. In only a couple minutes, the field was only filled with Wei WuXian’s baritone voice as the groans of the dead quieted to nothingness.

The demonic cultivator finished his song with a low hum. Looking over to the campaign soldiers he ordered, “Round up the surrenders and tend to the injured, get them back to camp, “he shouted next to the closest Wen soldier, “Wen Bo, set off a flare so the Nie and Lan squadrons can move in.”

“Yessir! “the call came from both Wens and various minor sect disciples

Shoving ChenQing against his waist, Wei WuXian hurried over to the first soldier he could see. The man laid prone on the ground with a deep cut on his chest and legs.

“Can you stand?, “the Jiang cultivator asked while wrapping an arm around the man’s shoulders

“I...I think so, “the Yao disciple grunted in pain while being hoisted up, “Thanks Wei WuXian.”

“It’s no problem, “the demonic cultivator replied as a Wen soldier trotted over to help the man to a carriage

Moving along, the Jiang head disciple picked as many living people up as he could, leading them over to the carriages to be taken back to Yangquan. If they were seriously injured, he quickly fed them a blood replenishing tablet before knocking them unconscious.

“This cart is full. Head out!, “the soldier at the helm nodded and quickly kicked at their steed to get moving

“WuXian, “the man quickly turned around and smiled, “Huan-ge.”

The man let out a tired huff, leaning against a broken tree, “It’s over for now, isn’t it?”

“For now, “Wei WuXian nodded, “Our job here is done, so let’s try and get as many people back alive as possible.”

“a-Qing’s going to have her hands full, “Wen Huan surveyed the war zone

“Indeed, “ Wei WuXian grinned and started off into the ruined battlefield, “Come on, let’s go!”

“Right behind you!, “Wen Huan ran after him

Notes:

-Yanli’s handmaid is Liao Yan
Liao as in the ancient state of Liao & Yan as in “Swallow Bird”

-Fun Fact: Wen Huan and Wen Bao are the same names I chose for a-Yuan’s parents in my The Disappearance of Yiling Laozu AU. Since they only show up in the first chapter of that I decided to reuse the names here.

-At first I was going to have Yanli have a whole meal but then I decided to be a bit quirky and keep having her bringing in soups.

Chapter Text

If there was one place that no sect in the entire world had any interest in, it was Yiling.

The region was poor, one of the poorest around. The grounds weren’t very fertile and despite being so close to the ever flourishing rivers of Yunmeng not many merchants frequented the area. The cause of this was a well known but daunting and seemingly impossible task that no cultivator dared to even entrench upon.

The Burial Mounds.

A looming mountain of corpses from a great battle fought so many centuries ago that no one even remembers who the fighting was between anymore. It was further built upon from discarded bodies of paupers and unwitting victims to rivalries, jealous squabbles, and simple unlucky travelers. It was filled with all types of demons, yaos, and spirits. Ones who would wrench the flesh from the bones bit by bit and/or consume the soul until nothing was left of it.

The ever proud QishanWen sect had built a barrier around the mountain to contain most of the resentful energy, but its darkness still spread to the surrounding region. To fully cleanse the area would take centuries of constant work from the entire cultivation world combined, but as things were the sects mostly pretended the region didn’t exist because of its constant- as they deemed- pesky problems. The mountain would forever remain a place where once a person entered, they would never be seen again.

Which is why every alarm is raised when Chifeng-zun receives a missive that Wei WuXian went inside the accursed mountain.

It had been two weeks since the conquest of Yueyang, and Wei WuXian and Wen Qing were finally able to escort the civilian Wen defectors to Yiling. While a few of her relatives would stay to help man the medical tents, there was still a substantial amount of Wens who needed a place to stay away from the war fronts.

The group had headed off as soon as the Wen battalion arrived back in Yangquan. The had been bid a safe travel by the Nie and Lan Sect leaders and vacated the camp by noon.

This wasn’t the first time that Wei WuXian had gone to Yiling. The first had been during Wen Qing’s mission in Nightless City; the man had been on the front lines decimating the soldiers Wen Ruohan had sent due to his niece’s deception. The second had been during the conquest of Ganquan; the demonic cultivator had given the Nie disciples stationed there a few talismans that when set off would alert the main camp of an attack on the region.

In Yiling, a small fortress had been set up. After helping finishing its build, Wen Qing’s cousins had set about building homes for the incoming people. A large section of land set upon a hill a little ways above the town had been set aside for them. Along with these houses, the cousins had went about setting up a clinic. Now that part of the medical branch had arrived, the business could be opened.

While the Wens set about settling into their new home, Wei WuXian went about working all around the town. He brought along many protection arrays carved into standing, stone lanterns that he placed at the entrances to the town and around the Wen land. As of now, the town was safe from any more resentful beings entering their homes.

For the next four days after that, the Jiang cultivator along with Wen Qionglin and a few other Wens spent their time clearing and purifying the land one hundred miles surrounding the region and the town of as much resentful energy as they could.

The next three days were spent helping the people of Yiling. Night-hunts were conducted by the Wen cultivators, and Wei WuXian went around helping fix houses, tools, carts, and doing whatever small menial need the people wanted.

It was a few days after this that Wei WuXian made a stop at the Yiling fortress and told the sentry that he was going into the Burial Mounds and would return in a week. The sentry obviously tried to stop the man, warning him of the dangers, but the Jiang cultivator was able to convince the soldier to stand down and go about his way.

It was only an hour after this that the sentry’s worry and anxiety rose through the roof and they gathered a couple of soldiers to go along with them to search for Wei WuXian. They went to the edge of the mountain and screamed for the demonic cultivator for as long as they could. Receiving no answer, the only thing they could do next is send a missive to the war general asking for their next course of action.

As soon as Nie MingJue finished reading the missive, he summoned his saber into his hand, startling Meng Yao out of his seat in the process before flying out of the room and down the halls.

“Nie Zongzhu!, “Meng Yao shouted and started after the man

Rushing to the training grounds, Nie MingJue called upon a few of his disciples, telling them to get ready for travel. The disciples acquiesced, bowing and running to their rooms to get their things.

“Nie Zongzhu, “Meng Yao let of a tired huff as he caught up to the man, “Should I alert the minor sects?”

“No, “Nie MingJue shook his, “We shouldn’t create a panic yet and I don’t want to chance this getting intercepted by the Wen.”

“Da-ge, what’s wrong?, “Nie Huaisang called out from the halls running out of the passageway

“I’m going to go check on Wei WuXian, “the Nie Sect Leader replied getting ready to mount Baxia

“What wrong? What happened?, “Huaisang immediately took on a frightened tone, “Did something happen to Wei-Xiong?”

“Nothing that we know of, “Meng Yao smiled and placed a hand on Huaisang’s shoulder, “I’m certain he’s okay. Nie Zongzhu just wants to check on him.”

Huaisang nodded, “Okay, “then pursed his lips, “But...promise you’ll tell me if something happens to him?”

“I promise, “Nie MingJue replied as Meng Yao hopped on the back of his blade

As soon as the Nie disciples returned, they took to the skies, flying swiftly through the air towards Yangquan. In a little over an hour they arrived in the joint sect camp, alarming some of the disciples there who weren’t expecting a visit from him.

“I need to speak to Lan Zongzhu, “Nie MingJue said, pushing past some people towards the Lan camp

“Nie Zongzhu, “the guards gave a deep bow as the man arrived

“Is XiChen busy?, “MingJue asked as he started towards the Lan Sect Leader’s camp

“Not that I’m aware of sir. As far as I know he’s not in a meeting, “the disciple replied

At Zewu-jun’s tent, the guard outside quickly lifted the flap and alerted those inside of the sudden visitor. As Nie MingJue got close, they lifted the flap high, allowing him entry.

“MingJue-Xiong, what’s wrong?, “Lan XiChen rushed up out of his seat and to his friend

“It’s Wei WuXian, “Nie MingJue replied and handed over the letter

Lan WangJi stood up from his seat and strode over to the elder brothers. Looking over Lan XiChen’s shoulder, he read the contents of the message and felt his heart rate increase. He took a step back, unable to believe the words he just read.

‘Wei Ying, ‘he thought clenching his fists, ‘Why would you?’

“Oh, no, “XiChen shook his head as he handed back the missive, “This isn’t good.”

“I’m heading to Yiling now, “Nie MingJue said, “Are you coming?”

“Of course, “XiChen replied and turned to his uncle, “Shufu, I leave you in charge of the camp until I return.”

“What’s the matter, “Lan Qiren stood, “What’s happened?”

“Young Master Wei might need our help, “XiChen replied, “I’ll send for disciples if that’s the case.”

“Xiongzhang, “the three turned to the Second Jade of Lan, “I will go.”

Xichen nodded at his little brother, “Right. Let’s not waste any time and get going.”

As swiftly as they arrived, the cultivators took to the sky once more. The sky was almost clear, barely a handful of clouds above them as they closed the distance towards the cursed region.

They reached Yiling by evening, the sky was just starting to set.

“Nie Zongzhu!, “a sentry shouted and waved the men down

The NieLan contingent flew down and landed right in front of the fortress. A few civilians looked on curiously as the group of soldiers sheathed their swords.

“Status, “Nie MingJue grunted as the soldier jogged up to him

“Still no sign of him, “the sentry shook their head, “We’ve left some men at the entrance he made in case he comes back.”

Lan WangJi looked towards the looming mountain of darkness. Murders flew overhead in the hundreds and grey clouds blankets the sky only above the lifeless peaks.

“WangJi, “a hand tugged at his elbow

The Light Bearing Lord turned to see his brother sharing his expression.

Lan XiChen frowned, “Let’s head inside for now. We can’t be reckless here.”

Inside, the Lan and Nie cultivators settled into the meeting room, sitting across from one another while Meng Yao went to the corner to procure refreshments.

“What is he thinking?, “Nie MingJue tapped his hand against the table

“I can’t say for sure, “the sentry replied, “When I spoke to him he sounded determined, but about what I don’t know?”

Lan XiChen shook his head, “Did he looked troubled at all?,”he paused to chance a glance at his little brother, “Had he run into any issues while he was here?”

“Not that I can say, “the sentry shook their head, “From what I’ve seen of the civilians he been a boon to the community. Everyone was welcoming him into their homes after a while.”

Nie MingJue sighed at the answer and waved the sentries off and telling them to return to their duties. The man clenched his fists on the table.

“It’s not like him to put his life in danger like this, “Chifeng-zun muttered, “But what’s so important on that mountain that he’d risk his entire soul?”

Meng Yao walks from the corner of the room, a tray of tea and pastries in his hands, “Perhaps we shouldn’t worry?”

The three look to the deputy, “Young Master Meng?, “XiChen looked at him questioningly

“Why shouldn’t we worry, “Nie MingJue huffed, “He’s the best probe we have. Losing him, I can’t imagine how we’d continue.”

“Young Master Wei is quite intelligent; I’m sure he knows what dangers the Burial Mounds holds, “Meng Yao smiles as he sets the tray down on the table, “I’m sure he has a plan to make it out safely.”

Lan WangJi took his cup from the tray, staring lost into the steaming green liquid.

“Young Master Wei was so confident that he would return he even told the sentry beforehand, “Meng Yao started to place plates for the four of them, “He probably knew that there would be shock at his actions and took measures to try and prevent it. For now, we can only wait for his return.”

Nie MingJue nodded and sighed once again at Meng Yao’s reasoning before turning to Lan XiChen.

“The scandal this is going to create, “the man said in exasperation

Lan XiChen immediately grimaced and reached for a pastry, “Indeed.”

The Light Bearing Lord continued to stare into his drink, unresponsive.

“WangJi, “the Lan Sect Leader looked to Lan WangJi, “I know you must be worried, so I won’t stop you from going around the perimeter of the mountain to see if you can find him, “Lan XiChen placed a hand closer to his brother’s ,”But we don’t know if he can actually leave. So, please didi, don’t follow him.”

“All we can do is wait, “Meng Yao said staring out the window to the looming mountain

The next day, the Lan and Nie Sect Leaders went to question Wen Qing and Wen Qionglin, who, for all appearances, looked to be just as concerned as them.

“He said he would return, “Wen Qing said at the end of their questioning, “I’m just holding him to his promise at this point.”

The next couple of days, Lan WangJi went around the region, taking in the little changes that Wei WuXian had made during his time there.

The Second Jade of Lan ran his hands over the new looking gate at the entrance to the town, ‘Fresh wood, ‘he thought, ‘Banishment talismans etched into the top to avoid tampering. Lanterns to create lights for the guardsmen.’

A couple days after that, Lan WangJi along with his brother and Nie MingJue listened in to a couple of the town’s residents.

“It’s like the corpses have suddenly stopped coming, “a woman said while gathering her laundry from the line, “After he went up, they just stopped appearing around the town, like something is holding them back.”

“I don’t know what he’s doing, “her mother replied as she chopped vegetables for that night’s dinner, “But I hope it continues.”

On the seventh day, the Light Bearing Lord went around the mountain at least six times, trying to find a glimpse of the man. At the entrance, he played Cleansing to chance if a safe path could be cleared up the mountain. For hours he tried until the sun sank into the horizon and he was forced to return to the fort.

“Do you think he’s trying to seal the Burial Mounds?, “Meng Yao questioned at dinner that night

“I don’t know, it’s possible, “Lan XiChen answered, “But why now? Why not later?”

“That’s if that’s even what he’s doing, “Nie MingJue said into a piece of roasted deer meat, “We could also guess that he’s getting more corpses for our army, but that doesn’t mean we’re right.”

Suddenly, the sound of a flute pierced through the tentative calm of the dining hall.

“ChenQing?!, “Lan XiChen’s head snapped up and dropping his chopsticks

Lan WangJi jumped from his seat, running towards the window to stare out at the Burial Mounds. Clouds bursting with streaks of red lighting thundered above the desolate peaks. The wind outside howled.

‘Wei Ying, ‘Lan WangJi thought as his fists clenched against the pane, ‘What are you doing?’

“WangJi, what’s happening?, “Lan XiChen came up behind his brother with Meng Yao and MingJue in toe

“Lightning, “Lan WangJi replied and thunder roared and shook the building, “Screams.”

“So he is alive, “Meng Yao observed as the sound of the demonic dizi continued to ring out

“Wonderful news, “Nie MingJue said almost dryly, “But what’s happening?”

“It’s too dark and dangerous to head out now, “Lan XiChen shook his head, “First chance in the morning, we head there to see what’s changed.”

The next morning, the cultivators inside the fort found themselves in restless sleeps, tumbling back and forth inside the their beds. The sun shone bright the the windows, signifying a new day, but no one rose from their beds.

“Nie Zongzhu! Lan Zongzhu!, “a Nie disciples suddenly shouted from the door, “it’s Wei WuXian; he’s returned!”

Eyes snapping open, the first to fly out of bed was Lan WangJi, throwing on his robes as quickly and orderly as he could and snatching up his sword and guqin. Lan XiChen and Nie MingJue were not far behind him. The Light Bearing Lord could hear Chifeng-zun muttering under his breath; the words, “I’m going to hurt him” reached his ears.

The NieLan contingent left the fort as quickly as possible, damn near running towards the mountain of death. Not much later, standing at the entrance of the Burial Mounds, they finally saw Wei WuXian. He was smiling and talking to a few harried Nie disciples, patting a few on the shoulders. Closest to him was Wen Qing and Wen Qionglin; the elder sibling was poking around the man with her golden spiritual energy laced around her hands.

“Young Master Wei!, “the sound of the Lan Sect Leader calling for him has the three turning around to face Zewu-jun

Lan XiChen and Lan WangJi nearly sprinted up to the Jiang cultivator. As soon as he reached his he ran his hands over the man’s shoulders and looked him over.

“Are you okay?, “the older man asked brows furrowed and lips turned down

“I’m fine, “Wei WuXian smiled placatingly, “It was nothing I couldn’t handle.”

Lan XiChen immediately looked at Wen Qing, and the woman nodded making the Lan Sect Leader drop his hands to his sides.

“What were you up to in there?, “Lan XiChen questions, “What possessed you to go inside the Burial Mounds?”

“It’s a long story, “Wei WuXian answers

“Wei Ying, ‘the Jiang cultivator turned to the Lan heir and replied, “Lan WangJi”

The Light Bearing Lord’s eyes roamed over the man, making him feel a bit awkward. He avoided looking directly at him and watched as the Nie contingent advanced on them.

“Is something wrong, Lan WangJi?, “Wei WuXian was about to ask the man

“Are you insane!, “the five looked behind them to see Nie MingJue scowling at him from beside Meng Yao

“Nie Zongzhu?, “Wei WuXian turned and raised his brow

“What if something had happened to you?, “Nie MingJue crosses his arms

Nie MingJue and Lan XiChen were looking at the demonic cultivator quite sternly. Anger was at the forefront of Chifeng-zun’s words, but there was something else there as well. The looks on their faces, it was the same look Lan XiChen would give Lan WangJi after a long battle or if Chifeng-zun hadn’t caught wind of Huaisang at some point within the day.

‘Were they...worried for me?, ‘Wei WuXian thought

“Well?, “Nie MingJue spoke at the same time Lan XiChen said, “Young Master Wei?”

In his first life, he hadn’t become close to Chifeng-zun or Zewu-jun during the war; barely spoke to them even. In this life, however, he was constantly sending missives between the two men. They were quite pleasant to converse with in post meetings as well.

Call it an unintended consequence of their plan. A part of Wei WuXian’s heart clenched at the thought of worrying the two brothers so. Sighing inwardly at the turn of events, he gave them a big, bright smile.

“I apologize for worrying you, but the situation couldn’t be stalled any longer., “he then added, “I promise to tell you if I have any sort of idea like this in the future.”

At his earnest reply, some of the anger released from the Nie Sect Leader’s body, “Get to the fort right now and sit down., “Nie MingJue turned and started back towards the building, “We need to start making plans for our next course of action.”

Lan XiChen placed his hand on Wei WuXian’s shoulder once more, giving it a squeeze, “Maybe after you can tell us what you were up to?”

Wei WuXian replied with a huff, “You’ll probably call me crazy, but alright.”

The demonic cultivator turned to the two Wen siblings, grinning, “I’ll be back for dinner, save me me a bowl Wen Ning!”

Wen Qionglin smiled, “Don’t worry about it, Young Master Wei.”

Wen Qing rolled her eyes at him, “Don’t be surprised if it’s cold.”

Wei WuXian smirked and huffed as he walked off, “So cruel.”

The Wen siblings split off, heading in the direction of their relatives’ homes while the other group went the other way. A few of the Nie disciples stayed behind to watch over the entrance Wei WuXian made into the mountain.

Lan WangJi held back, watching as the Jiang cultivator walked shoulder to shoulder with his brother and Nie MingJue, a wide smile on his face. Looking back, he glared back at the entrance of the Burial Mounds once before turning on his heels and following after the group.

...

Liao Yan sometimes wondered if she would be less stressed working in the camp’s kitchens or working as a courier.

The young woman sighed as the slipped the towel back into the vessel of warm water. Her mistress let out a tired hum from her place on the bed.

“How are you feeling, my lady?, “Liao Yan asked

“My sides still hurt a bit., “Jiang Yanli replied in a light tone

Before she was hired, she new that working for the Jiang Sect would be a daunting task, as any servant working for a cultivation sect job was, but she never expected this.

Jiang Yanli, despite being born in a cultivation family, was born with a weak constitution and was a very frail lady despite her healthy pallor. Some days, walking too much would even strain the young woman, so Liao Yan was always at the ready to care for her at a moments notice.

Today, her lady was sick in bed from having exhausted herself helping the chiefs prepare yesterday’s meal and had come down with a slight fever and almost severe body pain.

“My lady, “Liao Yan chided while tucking the sheets around the woman, “You know you shouldn’t lift up on those heavy pots.”

“Liao Yan, “Jiang Yanli smiled as the woman tapped her forehead with a warm towel, “I can’t help it. I’m unable to do anything else. a-Cheng won’t allow me to leave the camps without him or a-Xian.”

Liao Yan huffed, “I will go to Wen-daifu and see if she has any spare medicines.”

Jiang Yanli paused at the mention of the Wen doctor. She hadn’t returned to the Wen defector’s camp since their last encounter. She’d wanted to return if just to see Wei WuXian, but she hadn’t the time to or the strength.

“I see., “Yanli said with a small wince

“I will return swiftly, “Liao Yan looked back one time before leaving and closing the tent tightly

Straightening out her sleeves , Liao Yan made sure that she had a money pouch on her just in case the Wen doctor wanted payment for the abrupt need of medicine. Satisfied with the amount she had, she began her way through the sect’s camp.

The YunmengJiang War Camp was still the smallest of all the great sect camps. While a few people here or there trickled in wanting to be apart of the slowly rebuilding sect, not many people were looking to join their ranks.

If Liao Yan was asked why she thought that was so- and she hoped she never was- she would answer it was because she thought the only thing drawing people to the Jiang was their sect leader’s young age.

Liao Yan was passing by the training grounds when she heard it.

“That Wei WuXIan is really arrogant., “the words rushed through Liao Yan’s ears

“I know right, who does he think he is?, “another voice came over

The young woman looked over, spotting a group of disciples sitting around a small brazier sharpening their weapons. The men were quite rugged, lacking some of the grace and elegance of what most would consider a normal-looking cultivator.

“Walking around that Wen-dog camp like he’s some high born lord, “one of the men scoffed, “I don’t see why Jiang Zongzhu deals with him. Honestly, I’d of kicked him to the curb by now.”

“You’re telling me, “another huffed, “I mean, would it kill him to join in a few more battles. How many battlefields has he been in, three? I mean, with his power, this war would be over in no time!”

‘Are they talking about the lady’s Young Master Wei?, ‘Liao Yan raised her brow as she slowly passed by the men

“Hah, he’s too busy fucking that Wen-bitch, didn’t you hear?, “one laughed as they wiped their blade with a cloth, “When they moved some of her family to Yiling, they slept in the same house, probably even the same room!”

“That so? I guess that’s what good pussy does to a man., “another sneered

“He should be spending that time training disciples instead of playing around with a Wen-dog. Isn’t he supposed to be our Head Disciple?, “one man grunted

“Supposed to be, “another continued and then huffed, “Can you imagine how far we’d be in this war if he taught us those tricks of his?”

Liao Yan shivered at the last disciples tone. They were talking about the demonic arts.

It wasn’t the first time Liao Yan had heard about Jiang disciples wanting to learn demonic cultivation. It was a conversation she’d overheard as she poured her lady and sect leader tea over dinner. Jiang Zongzhu was enraged that a portion of their disciples deserted- slipping away in the middle of the night after Wei WuXian declined teaching them his sorcery.

“It’s like he doesn’t want us to rebuild!, “she remembered how Jiang Zongzhu had roared, “How am I supposed to keep people in this sect if he refuses to teach them?!”

“a-Cheng, “her lady had smiled calmly while setting down her chopsticks, “Maybe this is for the best? This way, the people that stay, you know they are loyal?”

At this point in the war, Wei WuXian hadn’t entered many battlefields, but the impact he made on the ones he did was impossible to ignore. Seeing the sort of powers he wielded, it’s no wonder people wanted a piece of the emblematic pie.

“Do you think, “one of the men’s eyes shifted, “You think he wants to be sect leader?”

“I wouldn’t be surprised, “one of the men finally sheathed his sword, “I heard Jiang Zongzhu’s father favored him quite a bit.”

“You think that’s why he wanted to be in control of the Wen camp?, “the first said and squinted their eyes

“Could be. All I know is that if he expects me to listen to anything he has to say after all this time, he has another thing coming, “a man sniffed, throwing a log on the fire

The men continued with their talk; their opinions of their sect’s head disciple loud and clear for anyone who passed by to hear them. Liao Yan could spend all day listening to the men continue to talk, or she could hurry and get her lady’s medicine. Deciding the latter was the better decision, she hurried on, giving a quick nod to the disciples on guard duty and rushed her way to the Wen defector’s camp.

The Wens were out and about, some were training like normal, and some were lounging around. Some of the Wen doctor’s relatives were sitting around a table perusing a couple of what looked to be designs for porcelain jars.

“Liao-guniang?, “the familiar voice had the handmaiden snapping to her right

Wen Qing stared at her with a raised brow, her arms folded comfortably in front of her.

“Are you in need of anything, Liao-guniang?, “Wen Qing asked

Liao Yan nodded, biting her lip, “My lady is in need of medicine. Do you have anything for body aches and fevers?”

Wen Qing paused for a bit, mentally going over her inventory, “Follow me.”

Quickly following behind the doctor, Liao Yan wrung her hands as they made their way towards Wen Qing’s tent. Once they arrived, Wen Qing held the flap for the young woman to grab and headed on inside.

“I don’t have anything for body aches at the moment, “Wen Qing says as she walks to her cabinet, “You’ll have to warm some sand in some bags and lay them against her body to ease some of the pain. For her fever, take this. Make sure she has a full meal before taking it, three times a day for the rest of the week.”

“Thank you, Wen-daifu, “Liao Yan smile and reached out

Vial slipping into her hands Wen Qing immediately stepped around the woman to head back outside.

Liao Yan took a moment to peruse the Wen doctor’s tent. It looked about the same from the first time she’d been in there, but there looked to be a exorbitant amount of paper covering the woman’s desk.

Hands tightening around the vial, the handmaiden quickly slipped out of the other woman’s tent. The morning sun aimed directly at her eyes as she exited, causing her to wince.

‘Ow, ‘Liao Yan thought, ‘It’s so bright today.’

“Again!”

“Hah!

“Again!”

“Hah!”

“Again!”

“Hah!”

Blinking, the handmaiden looked to the training grounds; several men and women were working through sword forms. Sweat rained down their brows as the harsh sun beat down on them, their polished swords shined bright. In front, a man lead the training with a determined look on his face.

'So lively., ‘Liao Yan thought turning her head away

An old woman sat near the civilian tents a ways away weaving baskets, her wrinkly, deft fingers quickly braiding away at the straws at her disposable. A younger looking, brown-haired woman was sorting herbs into the already finished ones, humming as she did so.

“Liao-guniang?, “she startled as the Wen doctor called to her

Liao Yan turned her head just as Wen Qing looked up from where she was crushing herbs in a pestle, “Is there anything more?”

“Ah, “Liao Yan shook her head, “No, no there isn’t.”

“Good, “Wen Qing replied, “I hope Jiang-guniang feels better.”

Feeling dismissed with those words, Liao Yan uttered another quick thank you and scurried away from the Wen doctor. As she went, she couldn’t help but continued to look around the Wen Defector’s camp, discerning how cheerful and light it was compared to her own camp.

‘To think, they carry the names of our enemies, but they live here mostly unbothered, ‘Liao Yan thought, ‘What holds them together I wonder?’

Liao Yan was so focused on her thoughts that she didn’t notice she was about to walk into someone.

“Oof, “Liao Yan gasped, falling back from the force of hitting the body

“Careful, “a baritone voice called out, grabbing her sleeve and pulling her upward

Straightening herself, Liao Yan looked up into silver eyes.

“Are you alright?, “Wei WuXian asked with a smile

“I...”Liao Yan was struck by the man’s beauty for a second, blushing, “I’m alright.”

“That’s good, “he smiled while she righted herself

“You’re from the Jiang Sect, am I right?, “Wei WuXian craned his head

Liao Yan took that moment to realize this was the first time she ever saw this man, “Oh, yes, I’m Jiang-guniang’s handmaiden, Liao Yan. I apologize for bumping into you.....um?”

“Wei WuXian, “the man smiled at her, “You are Jiang-guniang’s handmaiden? And you have a vial from Wen Qing, did something happen to her?”

Liao Yan frowned, “Yes, she overexerted herself I’m afraid.”

Wei WuXian frowned as well, “That’s unfortunate, tell her I wish her well.”

The handmaiden nodded, “Of course. I’m sure that will make her happy.”

Wei WuXian straightened out his sleeve, “I would love to continue our talk, Liao-guniang, but I’m afraid I have a pile of paperwork that needs finishing by tonight. Farewell.”

With that, the Jiang cultivator tipped his head to Liao Yan and slipped around her, heading further into the camp towards his own tent.

‘So that was the lady’s young master, “Liao Yan found a smile forming on her face, “He’s quite.........handsome.”

Tucking the vial inter her sleeves, Liao Yan made her way out of the Wen camp, striding her way along back to her mistress’s abode.

In Wei WuXian’s first life, it had only taken a week of him taking up residence in the Burial Mounds with the Wen Remnants for people to start calling him the Yilling Laozu.

In this life, it’s takes two weeks for the title to spread, but that only because of the actions attached are a far longer list.

“Wei WuXian, “a Zhao disciple throws an arm over the Jiang cultivator’s shoulder and starts to slur, “No, no, Wei-Laozu.”

Wei WuXian had decided to take another break. Well, it was more of a demand from Wen Qing who threatened to use his quick stint in the Burial Mounds- the plan they had come up with together no less- along with the unrelenting force of Nie MingJue to demand he take a break.

“Hmm?, “the man smirked at the drunk man, “What is it?”

“Tell us that story....the one.....the one about the Xuanwu, “the man leaned his head on the man’s shoulder

“Again?, “Wei WuXian raised a brow when the other man shouted in agreement, “Haven’t I told that one once today already?”

“Again!, “a Rong disciple cries, “Tell us again!”

Wei WuXian huffed when another man pushed against him, “Alright, alright. So, as you know, this was during the QishanWen Indoctrination....”

Not far from the group, Lan WangJi stood around the corner once more watching the interaction. The men circled around Wei WuXian, drawn into his story telling.

“WangJi?, “the Second Jade of Lan turned to see his elder brother

Lan XiChen stood, one arm positioned behind him, watching his little brother with a calm smile. Feel ashamed at being caught watching the Jiang cultivator, Lan WangJi looked to the ground the tips of his ears a deep red.

“Xiongzhang, “he shook his head, “I....”

“Was worried about Young Master Wei, “XiChen smiled, “I can’t punish you for that, ”then paused, “because I’m about to break a rule as well.”

With that, Lan XiChen tipped his head around the corner just as Lan WangJi did. Blinking in surprise, Lan WangJi followed suit. Wei WuXian was still chatting up the other soldiers, this time regaling the time that he saw the beautiful face of the elusive Flower Maiden.

“I have to say, “Lan XiChen started in a low murmur, “It’s only been a couple weeks since he went inside the Burial Mounds, and I know he’s fine, but I can’t help but be worried.”

WangJi looked at his brother, “Yes.”

Lan XiChen continued, “I know that he can take care of himself, but he does most of his work alone. Other than a few people....., “he pursed his lips, “he doesn’t really have that many people to rely on.”

Lan WangJi clenched his hands on the side of the building as Wei WuXian let out a bright laugh, “Mn.”

“I think, “XiChen’s smiled again as the group of men hollered at part of Wei WuXian’s tale, “I want to become someone he can rely on.”

Lan XiChen backed away from the corner huffing slightly before looking at his little brother.

Lan XiChen spoke, “I know that you’re still worried that his cultivation will hurt him. I’ll try to see if he’ll be willing to talk to me about it.”

Lan WangJi felt warmth bloom inside his chest.

“Thank you, xiongzhang, “he said sincerily

“Come, shufu is waiting for us with lunch, “the Lan Sect Leader turned towards their camp after having one more look in the Jiang cultivator’s direction

“Eh, “a Nie disciple gaped, “You really saw her? Was she as beautiful as the legends say?”

“Mhmm, mhmm, “Wei WuXian nodded with a hand on his chin, “a great beauty worthy of her name. Almost as beautiful as the Lan Sect’s female disciples.”

“Ah, so amazingly beautiful!, “a Rong disciple exclaimed

“Indeed.”

It didn’t take very long for the Twin Jades to reach the Lan Sect Leader’s tent.

“XiChen, WangJi, “Lan Qiren raised a hand towards the two, “Come sit before the food gets cold.”

The tables were settled with simple dishes of tofu, boiled broccoli, steamed radish and carrot, herbal soup and three bowls for each. The three took their places and began to eat obviously not conversing.

It was only after all the dishes had been cleared away that the Lan elder spoke.

“XiChen, I couldn’t find you earlier but there is a missive from Guangling that needs answering as soon as possible, “the man said reaching into his sleeve

“I see, “Zewu-jun reached his hand out for the letter

“I noticed that you haven’t done the same amount of paperwork as you normally do, “Lan Qiren spoke again, “Are you feeling ill?”

“Not at all shufu, “XiChen shook his head before peering down at the missive, “I just wanted to check on Young Master Wei is all.”

“That boy again, “the Lan elder shook his head, “What has he done now?”

“Nothing to cause worry, “Zewu-jun stated, “He was just on my mind is all.”

Lan WangJi stood and walked over to his brother desk. Sitting down, he started to sort through the already completed missives for the courier.

“It’s best to try and keep him off of it, “the man said

“Quite impossible now, I’m afraid, “Lan XiChen smiled, “Seeing as Young Master Wei is the current topic of all the sects. Have you heard, shufu, of his new title.”

“Title, “Lan Qiren raised a brow, “What is it?”

“The people of Yiling have started calling him the Yiling Laozu, “the elder brother hummed, “Who’d think that his time in the Burial Mounds would lead to this?”

“Yiling Laozu, “Lan Qiren’s lips turned down, “A distateful title.”

XiChen huffed, reaching over for a brush and paper, “In a way, I think it suits him.”

...

Meanwhile, in the Jiang camp, a very similar conversation was being held by the Jiang siblings.

“Have you heard a-Cheng, of a-Xian’s new title?, “Yanli said while Liao Yan poured her tea

Jiang WanYin scoffed twirling his brush in his hands, “Who hasn’t heard?”

The Jiang Sect Leader sat at his desk. Piles of paper were covering every inch of the surface and some had ever started at his feet. From what little Yanli could see from her positions in the tent, they were requests and offerings, but for what was concealed by the huge mountains of paper and ink.

“Yiling Laozu, “Jiang WanYin sneered, “Like he’s taken over the whole town and damned mountain when all he did was clear a few acres of farmland. It’s embarrassing!”

Yanli smiled and sipped at her tea, “I’m sure that you’ll have your own title soon, a-Cheng. With all the hard work you’re doing, people are bound to notice soon.”

Jiang WanYin slumped alittle, “And I’m still going to have it after him. Why does he always get everything before me?!”

Yanli placed her cup down, raising a hand for Liao Yan to help her stand, “a-Cheng, don’t talk like that. I’m sure the people notice how hard your working. Look at how the disciples respect you!”

Jiang WanYin placed down his brush, running a hand through his hair, “And the disciples, look how little of them their are. We’re barely passing the normal amount for a minor sect disciples.”

“More people will come a-Cheng, “Jiang Yanli replied while striding over, “I’m sure that when you reclaim Lotus Pier more disciples will come to us.”

Jiang Yanli ran her hand over her little brother’s head, “Just give it time, didi.”

Jiang WanYin let out a sigh before huffing, “Right.”

Yanli smiled and took a couple of steps back, “How about we have dinner together tonight? You work too much. Come take a break, a-Cheng.”

Let it be known that Wei WuXian and Wen Qing could argue.....a lot.

They would argue about things that many people would think is inane. Such as whether potatoes or radishes were a better vegetable for planting, whether or not toddlers liked being buried in the dirt or hung on trees, or over who was going to do the laundry that day. They would argue a plenty and even raise their voices sometimes, but anybody who knew them well enough knew that there wasn’t any heat behind any of their words.

Today, they were arguing over a name.

“Mei Ling, “Wen Qing said crossing her arms and narrowing her eyes at Wei WuXian

“Li Jing, “Wei WuXian said, his arms crossed as well

“Mei Ling.”

“Li Jing.”

“Mei Ling.”

“Li Jing.”

“Mei....Ling.”

“Li....Jing.”

“Wei WuXian!”

“Wen Qing!”

The Wen doctor threw her arms in the air, rising out of her seat and walking over to the water pitcher to get a drink.

“Li Jing gives precedence to it’s origins, ”Wei WuXian said tapping his fingers against the table

On the surface was a parchment full of names. Two of the names, “Li Ling” and “Lin Qiu”, were already crossed out.

Wen Qing took a sip out of her cup, “Mei Ling rolls off the tongue better.”

Wei WuXian scoffed, “Mei is the type of name you give a fair maiden, not a drink.”

Wen Qing groaned, “The first batch is almost done fermenting. We have to choose a name now!, “she slammed her cup down on the table

“Then let’s just agree that Li Jing is the name and be done with it, “Wei WuXian smiles dangerously and stands from his seat

“Or we could agree that Mei Ling is a more profitable name than Li Jing, “Wen Qing snarked back, “Besides, Li Jing is a dumb name.”

"How is my name dumb?!, “the Jiang cultivator shouted

A couple more shouts and what sounded like a needle being thrown, the two stormed out of the tent, still arguing. A few of the Wens looked in their direction but soon started to shake their heads and huffing at the familiar sight; Granny Wen even chuckled as she fixed a stitch in someone’s robes.

Outside the camp, a few minor sect disciples who hung around the area were startled at the rising voices and strolled around to see what the fuss was about.

Occupied in their quibbling, Wei WuXian and Wen Qing were unaware of the small audience they had garnered.

“Mei Ling!”

“Li Jing!”

“Mei Ling!”

“Li Jing!”

“Mei Ling!”

“Li Jing!”

“Wei WuXian!”

“Wen Qing!”

The soldiers shook their heads at the happenings before them and started off to their own camp.

“Man, those two fight like an old married couple., ”one disciple muttered rubbing at the back of his head

“I know, right?, ”his companion shook his head

...

“Wei WuXian?, “a soft voice called out, “Wei-Laozu?”

Looking up from his desk, Wei WuXian spotted a young woman in his entrance way.

She was a rather attractive young woman. With a round face and almond shaped eyes, she would have garnered more than a single look on a normal day. By her state of dress, he would say she was an outer disciple of the Jin Sect.

“Yes, “he raised a brow, “Can I help you with anything?”

The lady walked a bit further into the tent, “I wanted to speak with you.”

“Oh, “Wei WuXian set down his writing brush, “Do you need anything, guniang?”

“My name, “she started uncrossing her arms, “It’s Luo Qingyang.”

The name didn’t ring a bell. Wei WuXian squited his eyes at the woman, trying to figure out where in his life he would have met a girl from the Jin sect.

Wei WuXian stood, “Where have we met before, Luo-guniang?”

Qingyang took a deep breath and walked a bit closer. A sorrowful look came up on the young woman’s face as she lifted her hand, placing it on Wei WuXian’s left breast.

“You got this....because of me, “the woman said lowly

In his current robes, his Wen Sect brand wasn’t visible. The only way she could have known it was there was if she had been at the indoctrination, and if he got it because of her....

‘Oh, ‘he thought to himself

Wei WuXian gave the woman a bright smile, “Mianmian!”

“Mianmian” scowled at the man for a short while before sighing and going back to a neutral face, “Yuando.”

Wei WuXian chuckled, “So, what does the Jin Sect have you here for, Mianmian?”

“I’m not here on any orders, “Qingyang replied, “I came here because I wanted to say “hello”.”

“Mmm, I see, so you missed my dashing figure, “Wei WuXian winked to the young woman’s glare, “Ahaha, come on and sit; I can write and talk.”

And talk the two did. The two servant’s children ended up telling one another all about the other, findnig similarities as they went. After a while, Luo Qingyang didn’t even frown when Wei WuXian called her her nickname, simplying picking back at him by calling him Yuando a few times. For hours the two conversed.

“Oh, it’s getting late! I should probably head out, “Mianmian said, noticing the sun starting to set and standing to unsheath her sword, “Young Master Jin needs all the support he can get.”

“Wait, before you go, “the Jiang cultivator shot over to a corner of the tent, “Take this.”

Reaching into a crate, Wei WuXian pulled out one of his finished compasses. Walking back over, he dutifilly placed it into Luo Qingyang’s awaiting hands.

“A gift, “Wei WuXian winked at her again, “So you won’t forget me!”

Mianmian puffed her cheeks, “As if you are forgettable, “she paused, “Farewell, Wei WuXian. And....thank you...once again.”

“See you later, Mianmian., “Wei WuXian waved as the woman left his tent

Luo Qingyang smiled as the tent flap closed, “See you.”

Chapter Text

“He really loved butterflies. Oh, and rabbits as well.”

“Rabbits? Ah, that’s so cute!”

Wei WuXian was having a good day.

It had been a long three weeks of reconnaissance. Wei WuXian and Wen Qionglin had only gotten back to the war camps the night before and were tired to say the least. Having been thoroughly examined by Wen Qing, both men had been relaxing in Wei WuXian’s tent until a couple of visitors arrived.

“He also loved chewing on ChenQing, “Wen Qionglin supplied with a small smile, sitting along the tent’s walls with a few straws in hand, weaving a hat together

“Oh, is that so?, “Wen Bao giggled into her sleeve

“Ahaha, “Wei WuXian laughed, rubbing at the back of his head, “He was teething and would cry if I didn’t give it to him!”

When they weren’t training or helping with the the wounded, both Wen Huan and Wen Bao would take times out of their day to talk with Wei WuXian and Granny Wen about their yet to be conceived child. They wanted to know as much as they could about their a-Yuan so that they could properly take care of him when he arrived.

“At one point he got so attached to Young Master Wei that he refused to leave his presence for a couple weeks, “Qionglin said to a smirking Wen Huan, “If he couldn’t eat, sleep, bath, and play with Young Master Wei every single day, he’d  start to cry. It took jiejie’s and granny’s combined efforts to ween him from that.”

Wei WuXian let out a hearty laugh at the memory, “I remember waking up with a two year old in my bed! Granny nearly passed out when she couldn’t find him that morning.”

Wen Bao laughed heartily, “You’ll be a good big brother when he arrives, won’t you? Ah, I can see you hanging him in a tree already!”

“I guess, “WuXian replied laying is head on his palm, “So...how’s trying?”

Wen Bao blushed at his forward question, “It’s.....trying....still no success as of yet.”

“a-Qing said she would whip up another concoction for us, to make things easier, “Wen Huan was blushing as well as he laid his hands on his wife’s shoulders

Wei WuXian smirked at the two, “Ah, well don’t let the Wen Ning and I stop you. You should be using your free time to have fun instead of talking to the two of us.”

Wen Huan and Wen Bao both turned as red as a pomegranate.

“WuXian!, “the two cried out, shaking the entire area

"Yingchuan would give us access to the bigger trade caravans, but Yunmeng would give us access to the water ways.”

“Yes, and Lanling, Laoling, and Langya would give us access to the ports, while securing Gusu and Guangling would allow us to have better fortifications, hideouts, and weapon storage.”

Inside the Nie Sect Leader’s throne room, Nie MingJue, Lan XiChen, Wei WuXian, and Meng Yao all stood with a fresh map of the world settled on the round table in front of them.

(MDZS Maps - MacBeka on MDZS Reddit)

Wei WuXian picked up a piece of cinnabar and drew a large circle around the entire southern region.

“Since Wen Chao’s death, Yunmeng has been under control of Wen Kuo, son of Wen Shuang, one of Wen Ruohan’s top advisors; there are 20,000 cultivators spread throughout the region helping maintain the rivers’ waterways. Yunmeng and its subsidiary areas are being used for agriculture, training camps, transportation, craft, and trade. Meishan is being used as a weapon and food storage. It’s under the control of Wen Su, cousin to Wen Shuang; they have 5,000 cultivators under them.”

Next, the Jiang disciple drew a square around the Yingchuan region.

“As for Yingchuan, it;s has three different supervisory offices, mostly used to maintain the trade routes on land and to intercept our missives and scouts. The first office is under control of Wen Fu, she has 3,500 cultivators under her. In the villagers under her jurisdiction their are checkpoints in and out of every village checking for cultivators with a very strict and efficient guard schedule, so it will be tricky to send in spies. Next is Wen Jie, they have 1,500 cultivators under them. She mostly manages what goods will be distributed between the supervisory offices and what they charge their importing and exporting merchants. Finally we have Wen Jun, who has 2,000 cultivators under them. She mostly trains spies to infiltrate the trade routes and has a network of all manner of people from courtesans to a few lords in Lanling.“

Lastly, Wei WuXian drew a rectangle around the entire eastern region.

“As we know, Gusu and Guangling are at a standstill with the Wen forces. Lan-Xiansheng has managed to push the Wens out of the Cloud Recesses, but they still have control over the region as a whole. The person in control of the forces there is Wen Shen, son of another of Wen Ruohan’s advisors. He was appointed a few months after Wen Xu’s death, and has 10,000 cultivators under them. We’ve been unable to use the ports and tradesmen of Lanling, Langya, and Laoling because we can’t be sure if some of Wen Jun’s spies aren’t lurking within the trade routes.”

Nie MingJue looked over the three options with a critical eye. All three regions were very valuable in the grand scheme of things, so trying to choose which ones to capture first was a very difficult decision. Having the trade routes on land meant that it would be easier to move between their own forts and gain resources, while having the waterways meant more access all round to weapons, food, and the type of tactical measures they could take. Having the east would push their adversaries back allowing them to obtain more land and gain the upper hand over Wen Ruohan.

Lan XiChen narrowed his eyes, “While I wish to recapture my home as soon as possible, I vote that we should attempt to recapture the southern regions first. The waterways will be integral to putting a halt to some of Wen Ruohan’s operations.”

Meng Yao replied, “I have to agree with Lan Zongzhu, if we recapture the south we can start putting use to the rivers and gain more resources from the trade routes. But it will be a bit of a loss to us to not have the land trade routes as well.”

Nie MingJue hummed, “We’ll also be able to put up blockades and halt them getting their own resources. But we can also do that with the land routes as well.”

XiChen nodded his head, “Both have merit, trying to choose one will result in a loss of some sort, so we should try and determine which has the most benefit.”

“WuXian, your opinion?, “the Nie sect Leader turned to the Jiang disciple

The demonic cultivator looked over his map once again, tapping his nose as he went over the pros and cons in his head.

“Chifeng-zun, if I’m to be frank, “Wei WuXian looked to the taller man

“Speak, WuXian, “the Nie Sect Leader replied

“I believe we need to start putting pressure on the Jins, “WuXian said placing his hands down on the table

Both Lan Sect Leader and Nie Sect Leader looked to the young Jiang cultivator. Looking down at the map with a look of extreme concentration, Wei WuXian pursed his lips.

“Jin GuangShan is barely putting any effort into this war- we can count the number of Jin disciples we’ve actually seen on the battlefield- and it’s hurting the rest of us, “Wei WuXian takes a piece of cinnabar again and begins to divide the Jin territory from the rest of the map, “Look, we have Yangquan, Pingyang, Ganquan, Yueyang, and Yiling; almost the entire North, West, Northeast, and Northwest is ours. I’m not saying we rush into this. I’m saying we play the long game. Instead of trying to recapture regions one at a time, let’s switch tactics. If Zewu-jun makes strides in Gusu, Guangling, and Moling while we make headway in either Yingchuan or Yunmeng not only would it lead to us reclaiming an immense amount of land but it also puts pressure on Jin GuangShan.”

”Nie MingJue started to speak again, “He’d be completely cut off from Ruohan. Lanling, Laoling, and Langya would be at our mercy.”

“Exactly, “Wei WuXian nods tapping the regions with his bar, “The Jins have the money and resources to help us, yet they are constantly holding back, but at the same time demand that we help them. How is that fair to us?”

The three men stared down at the map once again. The LanlingJin sect was a veritably rich sect with access to the most ports on the eastern coasts, giving them to ability to gain access to resources from other lands. Many of the main family’s acquaintances were also rich lords or merchants who had high stakes in the trade routes throughout the jianghu. With the war dividing lands into factions, their money and other assets was getting tied up in whoever was in control of what region, and to keep their wealth they would probably abide by whatever rules the current faction set.

“I believe Young Master Wei is correct, “Meng Yao says after a bit of deliberation, eyes shimmering, “I don’t wish to say that we should assail my father- I mean Jin Zongzhu, but it is a very sound strategy.”

“It is, “XiChen agrees, nodding at Meng Yao, “but also risky. We’d be splitting our forces in half and putting them at risk for whatever the Wen’s strategies may be.”

“We’ll have to get the other sect leaders to agree as well, “Wei WuXian concluded, “It’ll never work if we can’t get them do their all.”

“For now, we’ll keep it as a option, “Nie MingJue says to the three laying both his hands on the table, “I’ll think over everything we’ve come up with today. For now, the three of you go back to your room and rest.”

With three different affirmations, the men vacated the room, leaving the war general to his own deliberations.

...

Two days later, the commanders and generals of the Sunshot Campaign all stood in the command tent of the Yangquan camp.

“These are our options, “Wei WuXian said as he finished debriefing everyone of his findings, “We’ve deliberated the pros and cons of each, but any other insight is welcome and valuable at this moment.”

Almost immediately, Sect Leader Qin stepped forward.

“As my good friend is unable to be here, “the minor sect leader started, “I have to say in his steed that I do believe that starting a conquest in Yingchuan may put Jin Zongzhu and the rest of us in the northeast in a bit of a bind. The Wen have a staunch control over our regions and any close contact with them may instigate a strong retaliation against us that we may not have the soldiers to combat.”

“Your concern is noted, Qin Zongzhu, “Wei WuXian smiled, “I do agree that any operation in Yingchuan may endanger Lanling and also your Laoling, but we also need access to the land trade routes as we do not yet have any secure transports other than our own men, who we need more on the battlefield.”

“What safety measures would be put in place for us if we do decide to invade Yingchuan?, “the Qin Cangye asked next, looking to Nie MingJue, “Surely you can’t expect us to fend for ourselves.”

“You wouldn’t have to, “Nie MingJue replied, “As our allies, should the Wen attack, we would do our best to send reinforcements, should they be needed.“

Qin CangYe’s face pinched at the end of the man’s statement, as it wasn’t a declaration that allies would run to their aid at the drop of a hat. He looked as if he wanted to say more, but another sect leader beat him to the punch.

“Why not capture the east first then, “the TingshanHe Sect Leader said, “We could start surrounding the Wens and cutting off their escape routes, making retaliations harder.”

“That is an option we’ve considered, “Lan XiChen replied, “But we wanted to wait for further deliberation.”

He Chang nodded his head, “Whether we liberate the Cloud Recesses or Koi Tower first is no matter to me. It all leads to victory in the end.”

“We should acquire the south first, “Jiang WanYin finally spoke, laying his own hand on the table, “the waterways will be essential to rooting out wen spies.”

“That’s true as well, “Sect Leader Ouyang nodded his head, “Plus with YunmengJiang back in control of their own region there will be more money from the taxed citizens”

“The same could be said for GusuLan, “the sect leader of GuanglingRen interjected, “The the east has a few waterways of their own and the mountain sides for use to have hidden bases.“

“The south also has better agricultural benefits than the east, “the sect leader of JianglingChen narrowed their eyes at the GuanglingRen sect leader, “It’ll be harder to farm so high up in the mountains, and our men need food to eat.”

“The east also has trade from other lands. We could apply their knowledge to our own and use it against our foes, “the GuanglinRen Sect Leader glared

“The south is home to many rich merchants who control the waterways and-”

“Why not just send Wei WuXian out there?, “the YueyangChang Sect Leader made everyone grow quiet

Then, everyone looked to the demonic cultivator standing to Nie MingJue’s right. Wei WuXian stared back unflinchingly.

“I mean, he can control the dead, right? Just send him to Lanling while the rest of us deal with another region, “the man continued

A few people nodded their heads at the sound reasoning. However, a cough garnered their attention.

Wei WuXian smiled, “I’m afraid, Chang Zongzhu, that that will be impossible for me.”

“Huh? What do you mean impossible?, “Sect Leader Ouyang demanded, “Can’t you make the dead do whatever you wish?”

Wei WuXian shook his head, “While I can control the dead, have you not seen it is in certain amounts? I can only control so many at a time, and I do not believe that I could take on a whole Wen army by myself; I do still fight alongside all of you.”

People started nodding their heads again at his rebuttal. ‘That’s true’ thought some of the sect leaders who’d actually been out to the battlefield. While Wei WuXian could summon a great number of the dead, he never summoned more than the Wens they were fighting. Some of them thought he was simply holding back, but perhaps that wasn’t the case?

Almost if he was reading their thoughts, Wei WuXian continued, “There is a limit to the dead I can summon and still have complete control over them. If I try to summon more, there’s the chance they could try to fight me. I don’t want to endanger any of my allies.”

The thought of the demonic cultivator losing control of his undead army whilst they were in the middle of battle sent shivers up the spine of many men in the room. Some still had vivid memories of Wen entrails spread along the ground after one of the battles he had entered.

“Then, let’s not do that, “the YueyangChang Sect Leader had turned as white as bone

Wei WuXian tipped his head to the man, “Indeed. Now, we still have to make a decision. There is another option that Nie Zongzhu, Lan Zongzhu, Young Master Meng, and I discussed, and it’s not too far off from your thoughts, Chang Zongzhu.”

“Oh, “the man said while trying to recover from the man’s earlier statement

“We were discussing having the Lan separate, taking a few forces and going to liberate the Cloud Recesses and surrounding areas, while the rest of us invade Yingchuan, “Nie MingJue answered for Wei WuXian

“Why Yingchuan, “Jiang WanYin narrowed his eyes, “Why not take the south and east at the same time?”

“Jiang Zongzhu, “Wei WuXian sent the man a sharp smile, “I did wish to recapture our home as soon as possible, but the hold the Wens have on it is very strong. They won’t give up the waterways so easily, and with the current resources we have, I believe it will be more of a loss than a victory to reclaim the south.”

“What do you mean loss?, “the JianglingChen leader asked

Wei WuXian folded both of his arms behind his back, “The south can be used for agriculture like Chen Zongzhu said, and having the waterways is essential just as Jiang Zongzhu said. However, it can also be used for transportation of goods, training, hideouts, and many other things. With this valuable resource, the Wens would no doubt protect it the most.”

“That’s why they have so many men stationed there, “the TingshanHe Sect Leader said, referencing Wei WuXian’s reconnaissance report

Jiang WanYin stared deep in Wei WuXian’s eyes, “So, you want to hold off going back to Lotus Pier even longer?”

Wei WuXian replied, “I will return to you your throne one day, Jiang Zongzhu, but I believe that it is in the campaign’s best interest that it not be this day.”

Jiang WanYin looked as if he wanted to scoff but settled for rubbing his hand along his sword’s shaft, “Very well then.”

“Are there any problems that anyone could see with that plan, “Lan XiChen spoke, “Let’s have a vote, all in favor of conquering regions singularly, raise a hand.”

A few minor sect leader’s raised theirs.

“Your comments?, “Lan XiChen beckoned

The men were all standing side by side one another on the other side of the table; the one in the middle nodded his head at both, intending to be their spokesperson.

“We are worried, “he started, “that conquering multiple regions at once may put us minor sects in danger. With our forces spread out, I’m afraid we won’t be able to come to one anothers aid.”

“Your fears are recognized, “Lan XiChen smiled, “We do plan on putting in some safety measures for such occurrences.”

Wei WuXian picked up where XiChen stopped, “I’ve been studying all of our sects’ barrier talisman and arrays throughout history, and I believe I’ve developed one that will be nigh impossible to break through.”

Wei WuXian raised his hands up. Using his powers, he depicted a house covered by an orb.

“Instead of using spiritual energy to charge our barriers, this one will only require one use of spiritual energy at a set number of focal points. The focal points will be determined by the topography of region. For example, if you live near a river, lake, or ocean, your focal points will more than likely be underwater and are maintained by keeping the water pure. Entry is afforded by way of token or by word of a token barer, similar to that of the Lan’s previous barrier, but also different in that no entry is allowed what so ever by someone not welcome.”

The sect leader looked a little bit overwhelmed at the researcher’s explanation, but nodded eagerly at the chance to be able to protect their sect, “Yes, that sounds wonderful!”

As Wei WuXian dropped his hands and let his display dissipate, the Nie Sect Leader grunted, “All in favor of a change in tactics, conquering Yingchuan and Gusu simultaneously, raise their hand.”

Hands raised quickly. Most people had been convinced by the earlier discussion and some simply wanted to get their hands on the schematics of a new, more powerful barrier for their sects.

Nie MingJue looked around, counting the number of hands, “Good. Now, let’s talk strategy.”

The sun was just beginning to set over the horizon as Wei WuXian made his way out of the command tent.

“Wei Ying, “the Second Jade of Lan called to him as he slipped out

“Lan WangJi, “Wei WuXian turned, looking as if he was getting ready to sigh, “Do you need something?”

The Light Bearing Lord paused for a second and thought about what to say. It had been a little while since he last tried to talk to Wei WuXian, not wanting to anger the man any more than he already did. He also didn’t want to hound him now that his brother wanted to befriend the other man.

He was still worried however.

“How are you feeling?, “Lan WangJi asked, “Are you tired from your reconnaissance?”

Wei WuXian blinked at him in surprise before replying, “Kind of. I’ve gotten used to it.”

“I’ve been told your camp doesn’t have tea delivered to it, “Lan WangJi tried a different angle, “I could have some sent to you. The Lan have a blend that helps with aches. “

The Jiang cultivator paused for a second. He looked at the Lan heir as if he had hit his head.

‘Is he not going to pester me about my cultivation, “he thought, ‘He didn’t give up in my first life; what’s changed now?’

Lan WangJi looked at him, waiting for answer about the tea.

Wei WuXian hummed in his head, ‘Well, if he’s not going to make a fuss...”

Wei WuXian brightened up like the sun and laughed, “Oh, really? That’d be great; I know more than a few people who could use it.”

Lan WangJi nodded, noting in his head to tell his brother to send some of the tea over.

Wei WuXian looked the Second Jade of Lan up and down. Then, he cupped his chin with his hand.

“You must be happy you’ll be returning to Gusu soon, huh Lan WangJi, “Wei WuXian asked

He was. Lan WangJi wouldn’t deny that he’d missed his home, wanted to get it back and build it back up.

“I am, “the Light Bearing Lord relied

Wei WuXian smirked at his straight forward answer.

‘I wonder, “Wei WuXian felt a bit mischievous

He then said in a teasing tone, “Will you miss me, Lan WangJi?.”

Unbeknownst to the man, this simple sentence sent a wave of happiness through the Second Jade of Lan. To have Wei WuXian’s familiar, playful voice aimed at him again sent his heart aflutter.

“Yes, “was WangJi’s simple reply

Wei WuXian blinked again, not really expecting him to have answered like that.

“Hmm, well, I think I should get back to my camp, “he grinned again, “I’ll see you later, Lan Zhan.”

The two men went their separate ways. As Wei WuXian walked through the camps, some of the people there gave him a few friendly calls.

“Wei WuXian, “a Tingshanhe disciples waved at him, “Care for a drink?”

“Later, busy, paperwork to finish, “Wei WuXian grinned, “Save me a couple jars though!”

“Will do, “the disciple laughed

“Wei WuXian, hey, Wei WuXian, “a Rong disciple ran up beside him, “Say, do you think you could get me something for muscle aches? My back’s been killing me.”

Wei WuXian hummed and grabbed his chin, “Hmm, there should be something in storage. Come by the camp after dinner.”

“Count on it!, “they replied before shuffling off

“Wei WuXian, “a few female disciples smiled and waved his way, “Care for a spar?”

“Maybe another time ladies, “the man declined, “But don’t let me ruin your fun, have at it!”

“Aww, “one of the women pouted, “It’ll be less fun without you there!”

Wei WuXian put his hand on his heart, “Ah, you make my heart hurt, my lady. To choose, paperwork, or spending time with compelling individuals such as yourselves. Truly, it is a hard battle. Alas, duty must come before pleasure.”

The women laughed out loud at his theatrics, “Alright, go on, go on. Get out of here!”

Wei WuXian waved at them, “See you!”

By the time Wei WuXian got back to the Wen Defector camp he could smell the delightful scent of deer stew wafting from the kitchen. Wen Ning had left the camp early that morning and must have caught a large buck for everyone.

“WuXian, “turning, Wei WuXian smiled brightly as he caught sight of Granny Wen making her way toward him

While the old woman was safe- for the most part- from the dangers of the war, she was still quite old. She needed a cane to get around due to her bad back, and sometimes her eyes weren’t as focused as they could have been, needing help from her daughter in law on those hard days.

“Granny, “the demonic cultivator held his hands out to help steady the old woman when she got close, “How are you?”

“Fine, today has been a fine day, “granny replied slowly, “Dinner will be ready in a little will. You need to get a full meal into you today. I’ve noticed you’ve skipped a few the past couple of weeks.”

“Ah, granny, it’s nothing serious, “Wei WuXian shook his head to the woman’s silent inquiry, “Just a bit tired from everything.”

“Still, “the old woman insisted, “Take care of yourself, young man. Don’t dig a pit that’s not worth digging.”

Wei WuXian’s smile turned more lovely, “Of course, granny, I will. I was just going to take a quick rest in my tent and I’ll meet up with everyone at dinner. How’s that sound?”

Granny Wen smiled and patted the young man’s hand, “Good. Good boy. I’ll see you there.”

“See you granny, “making sure that the old woman was good walking off by herself, the camp leader started off toward his tent

When he got there he wasted no time going inside and lighting a few of the candles before throwing himself down on his bed, closing his eyes and letting out a deep breath.

“Hah, “he sighed, tiredly throwing an arm over him eyes

In his first life, the Sunshot Campaign took two years to win. Two years of blood, sweat, anger, and tears as he trudged through muck and bodies to reclaim the Yunmeng area and topple Wen territories.

In this timeline, however, it had already almost been an entire year since the war had started and they hadn’t even reclaimed half of the jianghu from Wen Ruohan.

For some the Sunshot Campaign soldiers, it was discouraging that with even all of their efforts it seemed as if they weren’t really getting anywhere in this war.

For Wei WuXian and the Wens, everything was going according to plan.

The Yiling Patriarch could make this war shorter very, very easily. He could increase the number of dead and spirits in the battles he fought. He could take a trip to Xuanwu Cave in Muxi Mountain.

He wouldn’t.

He needed this war to be longer, far longer than it ever was.

And he needed the Jin to be a part of it.

He needed everyone weak, needed everyone in a state of recovery when everything was said and done so no one had the power or resources to lord anything over anyone else.

He needed time to get his own resources together as well, needed time to make contingency plans in case anything went awry.

And for those once prevented deaths that would surely come from it.

Well, he’d just have to live with it.

It takes a little under two weeks for the Lan to pack up most of their essentials to get ready to move.

“Please, write to me as soon as you get to safety, “Nie MingJue says as Lan XiChen settles his bags onto his horse

“I will, “the Lan Sect Leader smiles at his childhood friend as he hopped upon the steed

It was far too dangerous for all the white clad disciples to take up their swords and fly to their destination. Not only would it give the Wens a head up on their next course of action, but it would drain the cultivators’ spiritual energy, putting them in danger in case of an attack. The group had decided then, that the most important members would leave on horseback and separate into five separate groups and arrive back in Gusu on different days and at different times.

“Write me Lan Zhan, “Wei WuXian smirked at the Second Jade of Lan, “I’ll get lonely out here.”

“I will, “the Lan heir replied

As the Lan contingent settled into their formations and set off, the remaining men started to converse as they made their way back to the command tent.

“I hope they’ll make it back safe, “Meng Yao said as they entered Nie MingJue’s abode

“They will be, “the Nie Sect Leader replied as he sat down in his seat and crossed his legs, “And if they come across any danger he and WangJi can handle it.”

“I’ll bet, “Wei WuXian smiled, “Zewu-jun and Lan Zhan are very powerful. No one can stop them alone let alone working together.“

Nie MingJue quirked his brow at the name change, “You don’t hate WangJi anymore? You’re calling him by his first.”

Wei WuXian shrugged his shoulders, “I never hated him, just wanted him to stop pestering me. He hasn’t brought up my cultivation in a little while, so I think we’re fine now. Plus, I used to call him by his first name all the time.”

Meng Yao shook his head at Wei WuXian blithely smile, “You two must have been good friends.”

“The best!, “Wei WuXian replied

The three soon began to converse back and forth about the youngest’s earlier years. Wei WuXian even got Nie MingJue to huff and shake his head as he regaled the time he knocked the Second Jade of Lan off the Lan Sects Wall.

“You should have seen his face, “Wei WuXian cackled, “He froze underneath me when I wrapped him up underneath me.”

Nie MingJue shook his head, “You’re ridiculous.”

Soon, the conversation drifted off to more serious topics.

“Have you almost finished that communication array?, “Nie MingJue raised a brow, “I was wondering about it.”

“Almost, “Wei WuXian laid back in his chair, “Working out some kinks here and there. Want to hear about it.”

“Anything that’ll keep me away from this paperwork, “the older man replied, “Meng Yao, bring us some wine.”

“Right away, Nie Zongzhu, “the brunette said with a smile

Wei WuXian grinned at the promise of good wine, “Alright, so you know how stone can be carved to...”

Notes:

Hope you all enjoyed! I wanted to thank everyone who’s commented over the time I’ve been gone, health has been finicky for a long time now, but your comments gave me the strength to finish this chapter!

Ngl I loved making Wei WuXian lie about his cultivation. Having him say, “Yeah, I can’t do that” knowing it’s a full lie had me in giggles.
