Se non fosse stato piuttosto alticcio, Wei Ying si sarebbe accorto della presenza alle sue spalle. Così com’era in quel momento, mentre prometteva al ragazzo di aiutarlo a copiare, squittì in modo poco dignitoso quando due braccia lo cinsero all’improvviso da dietro, circondandogli la vita e tirandolo via da Huaisang, verso un petto ampio.
Impiegò qualche secondo di troppo a capire che qualcuno lo aveva abbracciato stretto.
Ci mise ancora di più a realizzare che quella persona era Lan Wangji.
«Lan Zhan…?» ansimò allora, «ma cosa stai…?!»
«Mio.»

Sarebbe stato il normale corpo di un dodicenne ben allenato, non fosse stato per le cicatrici di frusta sulla schiena. Alcune erano abbastanza vecchie da apparire sbiadite, altre erano delle cicatrici. Ma ce n’era una, lunga e profonda, ancora un po’ gonfia e arrossata. Soltanto una frustata particolarmente violenta avrebbe potuto lasciare un segno del genere. Per brutta che fosse, era evidente che fosse in via di guarigione.
Wei Wuxian si trovava a Qishan da tre mesi; lì, nessuno avrebbe osato anche solo sfiorargli un capello. Ciò stava a significare che era stato ferito dalla setta Jiang.

It’s been a week and a half by Lan Wangji’s careful count, and Jiang Wanyin has not returned. Nor has anyone else, for that matter, but given how close Wei Ying and the Jiang sect heir seemed, Lan Wangji cannot help but worry. Could something have happened to the other disciples?
