Notes:

Hello!
Thanks for reading.
This is the first time I have ever written anything like this, so if you have any feedback I would love to hear it.

Story was inspired by the amazing artists of Twitter that keep drawing Tengen with babies. I am not even maternal like that but these artworks are killing me!

Chapter 1: Unplanned Realizations

Chapter Text

Tengen Uzui was many things. He was bold, beautiful, flamboyant, and as of this morning an absolute idiot. At least that was your thought. The Uzui household was not like many others. It was large with some very large personalities. You could only imagine when spouses fought in a normal household, there weren’t so many voices involved, nor could their husbands hear through the damn walls.

You were thankful that the Sound estate was so large, because it provided you with a moment of peace. Tucked away from prying public eyes you were able to retreat to the back garden. It was one of your favorite places to be. Tengen had built it for you. He knew you enjoyed nature, and even more, a respite from the energies of the house.

High walls blocked out the outside world and tall Gingko trees provided lush shade. A small rock bed stream had been constructed to snake its way through the gardens lined with a mixture of blue and pink hydrangeas. The water was calming and the sounds distracted you from the tears that streaked your face.

Tengen Uzui was a complete and utter idiot.

***Sometime earlier***

You couldn’t believe it. Racking your brain for the information as you desperately counted the days on your fingers. Suma and Hinatsuru sat opposite you wide eyed. Their hands clasped together as you started your counting over for the third time. Makio stood by the door tapping her foot with impatience.

“You know I am right.” Makio spoke up, crossing her arms over her expansive chest, her tone was playfully covering her pride as she was not willing to rub it in your face quite yet.

“No I don’t know that!” You panicked, resuming your counting for the fourth time. Your heart was beating so fast that your hands had begun to shake. Realization was slowly taking over as you drop your hand to your sides. Wide eyed you look at all the women in the room.

“I’m late!” you sink to your knees beside Suma, unable to catch your breath. “I’m LATE!” you yell again.

“I told you!” Makio said victoriously.

“Makio it’s weird that you were the one to notice first.” Suma accused.

“What!? She usually is a cycle ahead of me is all! I’m just observant, unlike a few people I know!” Makio said with a huff as she joined the rest of you on the floor. “I am a trained Shinobi after all.”

“So I am!” Suma retorted, leaning in close to Makio's face.

“I am clearly better trained than you.” Makio said laughing as she caught Suma’s playful slap midair. You usually loved the banter you had with your fellow wives but today it was making the room spin. Taking deep breaths you tried to settle your nerves, as Suma and Makio continued their antics. You were only thankful that Tengen was presently at a Hashira meeting or he would have definitely joined the antics. Hinatsuru’s hand came to rest on your back rubbing small circles and pulling you from your thoughts.

“Are you not happy?” Hinatsuru’s voice was steady and calm and everything that you needed in the moment. A single tear fell from your eyes as you looked at her. A smile slowly spreads across your face.

“Yes, I am so happy. I mean completely and utterly in shock, but yeah… I’m really happy.” A small laugh escaped your lips as you wrapped your arms around her. Another two pairs of arms quickly wrapped themselves around you both as Makio and Suma joined the moment of comfort.

“I can’t believe it quite yet.” You said finally. As if on cue the ancient housekeeper, Aika, slammed the door open with her foot, her arms full with a tray of tea. She had been with the Uzui family long before any of you had, and practically raised Tengen. In truth she was the true pillar of the Uzui house. She waddled her small frame over to the nearby table depositing the tea. The room was still in silence at her appearance.

“I can arrange for a doctor to confirm it, if you would like. I can have them here at the house within the hour.” Aika said as she handed you a cup of tea. Apparently Uzui was not the only one with advanced hearing in this house.

“No it’s alright, I would like to see a doctor, but I would prefer to meet outside the house. I wouldn’t want to worry Tengen until I know for certain.” Taking a sip of your tea the warm liquid renewed your energy and excitement about the news.

“A baby in the house. It has been too long” Aika said with a sweet smile on her face.

“I can’t believe you were the one knocked up first!” Makio laughed.

“Hey! It's not like I was trying, we are usually so careful!” You sigh.

“You think it’s a boy or a girl?” Suma questioned.

“Suma as of 10 minutes ago she didn’t even consider that she was pregnant, how do you think she would know that?” Makio said, her hand now raising to playfully slap Suma, but unlike before, Suma was not skilled enough to stop it. The smack landed directly in the middle of her forehead leaving a bright red mark. Tears instantly sprang to Suma’s eyes.

“I’m telling Lord Tengen on you!” Suma squealed.

“Aw look we had a baby in the house all along” Makio laughed, the two women resuming their antics from before.

“Would you like for me to go to the doctor with you?” Hinatsuru asked, the ever calming presence in the house.

“No I’ll be alright. I shouldn’t be long anyway.” You said pulling her again into a sweet hug.

“I will arrange an appointment for you tomorrow.” Aika interjects.

“Thank you Aika. You are such a big help” You say.

“Anything for the Uzui house, my lady” she replies.

“And HEY!” you yell at your bickering wives, gaining the attention of everyone in the room. “This information does not leave this room until I can confirm it. I do not wish to start planning, or getting excited over something that may not actually be. Not a word to Tengen either! I don’t want to get his hopes up, over what could be nothing.”

“He is going to be so excited! Our family is growing.” Hinatsuru said, a soft smile lighting up her face.

“Hey maybe we can all start having children!” Suma says excitedly.

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I am not sure this house could take so much energy all at once” Aika says with a sigh. The women all laugh in unison. But you would be lying to yourself if the idea of the house full of all your children did not warm your soul. If only your lives were not so dangerous. Then like a tidal wave the realization hit you. You were demon slayers. Your lives were always at risk. But before you could let those implications settle into your brain, Tengen’s booming voice rattled the house.

“WHERE ARE MY BEAUTIFUL WIVES?! LET'S GO OUT FOR DINNER TONIGHT!”

Aika sighs again. “This house just could not handle it” patting the door frame as she makes her way to meet the head of the house.

You all start to move in unison to greet your husband downstairs, but you quickly grab the sleeves of your fellow wives, drawing their attention to your very serious expression.

“Not a word, remember.”

Uzui did not catch your words from downstairs but he did hear the seriousness of your tone. It was one he was not used to hearing. Aika had made it to the front hall, asking gently for Tengen’s haori. Spring was in full swing but as the sun set the nights were still cool. He had dressed casual today, well as casual as Tengen could stand. He wore a bright purple robe, with a royal blue haori draped around his shoulders. His hair was down but his gold ear clasps were still visible. His usual gold arm bands had been replaced with smaller ones stacked along his wrists. His obi was adorned with jewels and a bright floral pattern. He shook his head gently at Aika’s advances.

“No need! The wives and I are going out for dinner today” He said confidently. The wives in question were just now making their way down the stairs.

“Are we now?”  Hinatsuru questioned smiling, she enjoyed cooking but wasn’t opposed to the break.

“What are we having? I want Katsu pork!” Suma exclaimed, before jumping into Tengen’s arms for a brief hug. You were still processing everything that had happened today and couldn’t bring yourself to meet Tengen’s eyes. Your lack of attention did not go unnoticed by your shinobi husband.

“Y/N what would you like tonight?” Tengen asks, he felt uneasy with how you still avoided his direct attention, instead turning to help adjust Makio’s coat over her kimono.

“Suma’s suggestion is fine with me.” You reply. Tengen cocks his head to the side, confusion clear on his face. When it came to food you and Suma couldn’t have had more differing tastes. Something was definitely up.

“Is everything alright ladies?” Tengen asks, glancing between you all. At that moment the room went still, all the wives holding their breath all at once. A blush was beginning to creep its way across your cheeks.

“Why would you ask that?” Makio graciously intercedes distracting Tengen by hitting his large bicep multiple times. “I’m starved so whatever we get is fine with me!”

“Even Shirako?” Hinatsuru suggests.

“Absolutely not, gross” Makio says flatly. You chuckle as you find your own coat to wear for the evening. However, Aika has other plans, draping you quickly in a coat more suited for winter than a chilled spring night. You turn quickly to refuse, but she is already tightly tying it around your body.

“We’ve got to keep you warm.” she says firmly, leaving no room in her tone for argument. You smile sweetly at her consideration of you. You didn’t have much of a mother figure in your life, so it truly is a blessing to be so well looked after now. You feel four pairs of eyes on you as Aika adjusts your collar.

“Shall we?” you ask, ignoring Tengen’s still confused look.

****

The table was cozy in its secluded corner. The restaurant was warm and smelled divine. Steam was rising from the kitchen and wafting through the air. The place was lite with orange lanterns that bathed the place in glowing soft light. It gave the small place a hazy atmosphere. One that you hoped was disguising your rampant blush and shifting eyes. You couldn’t seem to get a grip on yourself. Your heart was beating so fast and it didn’t help that you kept catching the eyes of Makio and Suma. Hinatsuru was thankfully acting obvious to anything that was transpiring at the table, asking Tengen about his day.

“I am thankful that we don’t have any missions, though of course that could change at any time. I wanted to spend some time at home” Tengen said as he took a deep sip of his sake. Noticing that your glass was empty he poured your glass full with the warm liquor. Suma gasped, bringing her hands to her mouth, making Tengen pause his movements. Once again all the ladies stopped their breathing at once.

“Oh sorry it’s nothing…” Suma quickly says. Makio, not missing a beat, picks up your glass and downs the liquid in one go.

“Another please!” Makio says holding the glass out to Tengen with a wide smile.

“Now that is my flamboyant wife!” He says as he fills the glass to the rim, smiling as the woman downs yet another full glass.

“Makio you know that it is meant to be sipped” Hinatsuru states plainly.

“A lady may drink how a lady wishes!” Makio yells from across the table, a silent thank you conveyed through her eyes. Relaxing back down into her seat with the alcoholic blush already beginning to paint her cheeks.

“Not drinking today Y/N?” Tengen asks, wrapping his long arms around Suma and Hinatsuru at his sides.

“No not today.” You reply quietly.

“She won’t be drinking for a while” Makio says absent mindedly. You send a swift kick under the table that makes contact with her shin. She yelps in pain then realizes what she had said, her eyes going wide. And again for the 3rd time that night the ladies stopped breathing at the same time. To most such an occurrence would have gone unnoticed but to the sound Hashria the silence was a loud as a scream. Before he could question the strange behavior of his wives the atmosphere was interrupted by the delivery of the food. Dinner resumed as it always did. Conversations about the day, small plans for the future, simple wants and needs. However, Tengen could not help but notice your quiet state at the end of the table, and the rapid sounds of your heart beat.

****

The walk back to the house had been thankfully uneventful, other than your constant attempts to get the intoxicated Makio safely home. You felt it was partially your fault due to her having to cover for your inability to drink. You didn’t understand it, you were all trained shinobi and demon slayers and yet all of you were having the hardest time keeping a silly secret for one day. Perhaps it was a testament to your relationship, you were normally all open about your thoughts and feelings. You were a family, and if this type of relationship needed anything it was openness. Otherwise jealousies and mistrust would bloom, and at the end of the day you all loved each other so much.

When you got back to the house you graciously slipped out of your much too warm coat and headed to the kitchen to get some tea. Tengen’s large hand found your wrist before you could get far. Pulling you back to rest against his chest, his head coming down to nuzzle your neck.

“Let us retire for the evening.” His warm breath tickled your neck as he spoke. Your knees shook at the husk in his voice. You quickly leaned into his warmth. He took a step back pulling you toward the stairs to the upper floor bed chambers. The others were waiting on the stairway for you both. You all had your own rooms but most nights you all found yourselves tangled together in Tengen’s large bed.

“I will be there presently, I want some tea to settle my stomach.” You said, patting his arm as he released his grip on you.

“Do not take too long. We will be waiting.” He said lovingly kissing the top of your head.

“Yes, My Lord Tengen.” You smiled, the honorifics were privately used as a joke, and a deep chuckle escaped your husband as he quickly ushered the others up the stairs.

You set to making your tea quickly, not wishing to be left out of the fun for too long. The water seemed to be coming to a boil in the slowest manner possible. Setting up two cups you figured Makio would want some as well given how much she drank tonight. You hadn’t even been drinking and your stomach was doing flips. You sighed thinking it had to be psychosomatic because there was no way you could suddenly realize you were pregnant and get morning sickness all at the same time. It had to be your nerves you tell yourself. Placing your hand on your lower stomach you realize this is the first moment you have had to yourself since you had come to your revelation that day.

You couldn’t really fathom it. The idea of children had never been off the table for you but you never knew when it would actually ever happen. Your lifestyle was not ideal to raise children in and at any moment tragedy could strike. You had seen it happen to countless families’ throughout your missions and were not naïve enough to think that yours was somehow immune. Rubbing your stomach in small circles you took a sip of your tea. ‘Could you really do this?’ you thought.

I thump came from the rooms above as you were sure bodies were being swiftly removed of their clothing. ‘Wait can I really do this?!’ your thoughts shifted to the activities upstairs and your breathing hitched. ‘Would it hurt the baby?’ you weren’t even sure if pregnant people should have sex. ‘They did right??’  Of course they did, you were almost certain… almost.

“Where is Aika when I need her?” you say aloud. It was far too late for you to wake the poor woman just to ask if you could get railed by your husband. That would be a question for the doctor tomorrow for sure. Another thump came from the floor above. You sigh heavily. This day was just getting worse.

Taking your tea with you, you paused outside Tengen’s room. Even without ears as sharp as your husbands you could hear the activities going on just beyond the door. The heavy sighs and quiet moans as your husband with the stamina of a god brought his wives pleasure. God of Festivals should have been God of Sex in your humble opinion. Not that you knew much about any other kind of relationships but from what you had heard from the disgruntled wives around town. Tengen was clearly on another level.

Steadying yourself, and thinking about your potential child, you walk quickly to your room. Sinking into your much too cool covers. Your hand returns to rubbing your stomach. You really hoped the doctor could give you all the answers you needed tomorrow. Keeping secrets from your husband felt strange and not falling asleep in his warm embrace felt even stranger.

****

The night had crept along and you had managed to find some sort of sleep. You would not have called it comfortable. It took you ages to quiet your mind and even longer to feel warm enough to settle down. But alas it still felt like you were drifting somewhere too close to consciousness to actually rest. Your door quietly slid open and closed as silent footsteps made their way to you. You only felt the vibration of them as they neared you. No sound, as all top shinobi were trained. Strong arms came down on either side of your head, the warmth radiating off of them as Tengen leaned down near your ear.

“You never joined us.” He said plainly. “Are you feeling alright? Something has been off all night. You have me worried.” Humming you let his voice pull you from what sleep state you had achieved.

“I am sorry to have worried you.” Your voice was quiet, you weren’t sure what to say to him. It was not the time for the conversation you wanted to have so you settled for a small lie. “I was not feeling my best today.”

His hands were on you quickly, rubbing your face with his thumbs, pulling you completely awake. He moved to your neck, then your sides, and then down your thighs as if checking for any sign of injury.

“Why didn’t you say earlier? Do you need anything? I selfishly insisted that we went out tonight too.” He didn’t let you answer before his mouth was on yours. His kiss was fierce, pulling your face to his as he buried his hands in your hair. It didn’t take you long to find his rhythm and return his energy. You fell back against your pillow pulling him with you. And soon his weight was on you. You welcomed him into your bed pulling the covers up and over both your bodies as he settled his weight between your thighs. It felt so natural to have his weight on you, settling you down deep into the padding of your bed. He hadn’t stopped kissing you. His hot tongue laying claim to your mouth as you moaned for more. He rested on his elbow as his other hand began to untie your robes.

You were finally able to catch your breath as his mouth moved to your jaw as he licked and kissed his way to your neck. Small bites had your pulse jumping as he continued down. Your robe falling open under his touch. Still balancing his weight on one arm, he used the other to wrap around the small of your back. Easily lifting your chest to meet his hungry mouth. His tongue swirled around your perk nipple before quickly taking it fully within his mouth sucking hard. A loud gasp left you, finally finding your voice again.

“Tengen yes!” you arch your back more into him burying your hands in his silver hair. You can feel his smile on your skin as he continues to play with your breasts. Taking one between his teeth and biting gently to watch you squirm. Your hands slide down the back of his neck, you nails leaving marks in their wake before bracing yourself on his shoulders. Your body demanded more. His assault on your chest made it difficult for you to access his body with your hands so you settled for your hips.

Wrapping your legs around his waist you pulled his lower body more firmly against you. Even through his robes you felt his cock press hard against you. Hard and impossibly warm you shifted until the bulge fit perfectly against your cunt. Using your leverage you began to grind yourself against him. Each thrust brings him in contact with your clit. His moans of approval radiated through your skin as he continued to fondle and suck at your chest. With each contact with your clit you felt the tension growing deep inside you, that delicious coil that when sprung brought so much pleasure. Pleasure that the man you called husband pulled from your body over and over and over again.

Tengen’s robes were soaked from your readiness and his precum. ‘And getting in the way.’ You thought.  You wanted direct contact with him. Pushing your hand between your bodies you pulled his robe apart; finally able to reach his hot velvet skin. Wrapping your hand around his cock, your fingers couldn’t touch from the girth of him. You gave him two swift pumps, more precum leaking onto your fingers.

“Yes baby, just like that” he pants. His words shocked your brain like lightning. What should have been hot and encouraging words, were like an ice bucket to your libido. ‘BABY?! OH SHIT! I WASN’T SUPPOSED TO BE DOING THIS TONIGHT! NOT UNTIL I KNOW FOR SURE!’ Your mind raced. Tengen clearly sensed your change as you had gone completely still, rigid, and cold in the matter of seconds.

“What’s wrong? Did I … did I hurt you?” He says concern clearly in his face and voice. He too had gone completely still, scared that he would hurt you if he moved.

“I…I… I can’t do this” you say frantically pushing against his shoulders to put space between your bodies. Clearly he is at a loss for words as he watches you dumbstruck as you pull your robes back around yourself. Scooting yourself to the far side of your bed. Clearing his throat he sits back on his haunches pulling his robe around him. His erection is still clearly at attention.

“You were so eager just moments ago… Did something happen?” He asks. Concern and hurt clear on his face. Rejection of course happens in any relationship, and Tengen had four wives to contend with, but it was rare for it to be so abrupt. “If I’ve done something, you must tell me.”

“No! No you didn’t do anything, it’s hard to explain…. I just can’t, not now.” You know that he will want some definitive answer. Tengen is not one to have open ended questions. At least not from his wives.

“I feel like you are pulling away from me, and not just now. Since I returned home today you seem distant.” He says reaching out for your hand. You hesitate to take it, the action not going unnoticed, but his grip is strong but not forceful. It is quiet for a moment.

“Even now your heart is beating strangely, I can hear it.” You cast your eyes away from him. ‘Not now! Not now… you can’t just blurt out important news like this. You can’t get his hopes up, when you aren’t even sure yourself.’ You chant to yourself.

“I’m just not feeling well.” You lie again. Your heart beat is betraying you, you know it, Tengen knows it, but he doesn’t push the issue.

“I understand” he says dryly, “do you need anything? More tea perhaps?” He quickly moves from the bed, adjusting his robes to fit properly on his body once more. You feel it pulling on your heart. The hurt, the need to remedy the confusion you’ve caused, but words were not an option.

“Tengen…” you manage. He turns and looks at you with fierce fuchsia eyes. “Will you stay with me? At least for a little while?”

“Of course.” He replies, the warmth you were used to seeing returns to his face. The light that always dazzled you sparkling in his eyes. You move back to lay under the covers, holding them open as Tengen crawls in beside you. As if nothing had happened you both find yourselves wrapped in each other’s embrace. Tengen lays on his side, as you use his bicep as a pillow. He pulls you in close until your forehead is pressed to his chest. You bask in the warmth and scent of him. The stress of the day is finally catching up to you as your eyes become heavy. Sleep clawing at your mind. ‘This tension is temporary’ you tell yourself. ‘Tomorrow everything will be sorted.’ Tengen leans down and kisses the top of your head, eliciting a soft sigh to escape you as you drift to sleep.

****

Tengen is not there when you wake up, but he rarely is. Either off training, on a mission, or at a meeting. He was very much a morning person. No time to waste was definitely his motto. Slipping from your bed you head for a quick bath and breakfast. Hinatsuru was in the kitchen with Aika preparing breakfast. It smelled lovely. You were not much of a cook yourself, even with Hinatsuru’s kind lessons, but you enjoyed spending time with her as she created dishes. It was always the place where you could see her fully relax. Completely in her element. Tengen also enjoyed spending time in the kitchen, but he was a far more adept student to her lessons than you were.

Makio was sitting on the back porch, sharpening her kunai knives. She usually trained with Tengen before he would leave for the day. However, from her lack of smile and sweat that hadn’t happened today.

Suma was still blissfully asleep. She was always the last to rise and the first to pout when her breakfast was cold. But she did bring her playful energy to any part of life, even if it was when you both were stuck doing the dishes.

You were not much of a morning person yourself, needing at least two strong cups of tea to even be sociable. Tengen had mentioned on more than one occasion that demons were fortunate that they didn’t rise with the sun or they would have all been destroyed by your morning temper. At the times he had said it you were in such a morning mood that you couldn’t find it the least bit funny. But it did bring a large grin to his face. This morning however, you were filled with so much anxious energy you could barely sit through breakfast.

“Calm yourself girl!” Aika said as she handed you your bowl of rice. “The doctor can’t see you until midday. You will make yourself sick at this rate.”

“I can’t help it! Yesterday was bad enough, and last night with Tengen was even worse.” You reply, hanging your head in defeat.

“He was quite distracted when you didn’t join us.” Makio said from her place on the porch. “You definitely had him worried.”

“Why didn’t you join us?” Hinatsuru asked, placing her chopsticks against her lips.

“I was worried if I joined… I could… or he would.. it would hurt the baby.” You admitted sheepishly. Aika’s old frame began to raddle with her contained laughter until it finally burst from her lips. It rang merrily throughout the house.

“I guess that is wrong?” you say as the embarrassment turns your face a bright shade of pink.

“You may engage in intercourse when you are with child, women even sometimes do it to induce labor.” Aika says through her chuckle.

“So last night was an even bigger waste then!” You groan, “Tengen came to me last night and I was so worried about it, I pushed him away. I couldn’t even really give him a reason why.”

“Why is everyone laughing?” Suma askes, only just now entering the kitchen, still rubbing sleep from her eyes.

“It’s nothing much, just that Y/n is a silly pregnant lady that was worried Tengen’s dick would break her.” Makio said doing her best to hide her own laughter at the situation.

“Suma come eat, your breakfast is getting cold.” Hinatsuru demands.

“Ah man not again” Suma whines.

Chapter Text

The doctor’s house was not too far of a walk from the Sound estate. Located near the center of town did seem like the ideal place for a doctor to live. Plus when you are finished you might have time for some light shopping. The house was nice but not too lavish. The front garden was well kept, with the morning glories trailing along the inner walls, and wisteria draping along the front gate. You had insisted on going alone, there was no need to take your loved ones away from their tasks, for what you hoped would be a very quick visit. Ringing the bell at the door you were swiftly ushered inside. The doctor’s wife was the first to greet you.

“Welcome, you must be Y/n. Aika has been a friend of the family for a long time. And when we received her message yesterday we were worried it was something serious. I was happy to hear it was about a baby. You are one of four wives correct? I have never met someone who’s in a relationship like that. It must be very strange. Your husband is Lord Uzui correct? He must be quite the man to be outnumbered by so many women. “She laughed. Before you could even manage to answer, her questions continued. “So four wives… just wow, your husband must be very busy for this to be the first child in the house. Is he not home much? What kind of profession must he have to be able to afford such a large estate? It is surely the biggest estate in at least five towns.”

“He is a shinobi.” you answered flatly. She laughed quickly until she saw the seriousness on your face, and soon the laughter began to die in her throat.

“You must be joking.” She laughed again.

“Nope.” You say very matter-of-factly. You see all the humor leave her face, as she looks you down from head to toe.

“Mother, please do not harass the guests.” A voice from behind you speaks. You turn to see the source to be met with a low bow. “Please forgive any of her rude questions. If it is any condolence, she does this to everyone.”

The man stands and you are struck by his looks. He is tall, not nearly as tall as Tengen, but still well above average. A slender build with long black hair tied into a messy bun at the top of his head. His eyes were also striking, a vivid amber brown that contrasted well with his pale completion.

“My name is Haru, if you will follow me, the doctor is ready for you now.”

“Yes, of course.” You leave the foyer quickly without another word to the still shocked woman. Following quickly behind Haru. He leads you to a bright room with many books lining the walls. There was a wooden table in the center of the room, with a few other various chairs and desks. Clearly it was an office of sorts, but after going to the butterfly mansion so many times for injuries, being anywhere else just felt strange. Haru gestured for you to sit in one of the chairs near the desk.

“I am going to get a bit of information from you before my father sees you, if that is alright.” He says pulling out a notebook from the desk drawer.

“Are you a doctor?” you ask as he sits waiting for you to join him.

“Not quite yet” he chuckles. “I will be soon, but I am still training. But I do plan to take over for my father when he retires.” Convinced you sit in the chair opposite him.

“Aika had mentioned in her correspondence that you are here for a pregnancy evaluation. Is that correct?” Haru asked politely, you still felt uneasy but at least his questions were not as aggressive as his mothers’ had been.

“Yes, that’s correct.”

“Do you know how late you are?”

“I’m honestly not sure the exact date, but Makio and I figured it is at least two weeks. We were busy with our last job and I kind of lost track.”

“Makio?” Haru questions.

“She is one of my partners, Tengen’s wife.”

“Oh I see” Haru said, scratching his head quickly out of nervousness. You figure like his mother he was also curious about your family dynamic. In truth most people were. “I wanted to clarify, in case she was your midwife, which I would suggest getting if you haven’t considered already. I know a few good ones if you would like recommendations later.”

“Yes that would be great!”

A soft knock signaled before a sturdy old man entered the room. He too had vivid amber eyes, though they were slightly dulled by his small fingerprint smudged glasses. He had a soft smile and a calming demeanor. Walking swiftly over to the desk he placed his hand on Haru’s shoulder.

“Isn’t my handsome son going to make a fine doctor? He is a good catch, a fine catch indeed. Especially for a beautiful young woman like yourself.” You were quickly beginning to question the sanity of this entire household.

“Father please, that is not very professional!” Haru exclaimed, his cheeks turning a deep shade of red. “You cannot be trying to set me up with patients! Especially not the married ones!”

“Please Mrs. Uzui, forgive my father. It is all in jest I can assure you! Please” and for the second time in less than an hour, Haru bowed low before you. You had a sneaky suspicion that he had to do this often.

“It’s quite alright, though I can’t be certain if my husband would be furious or laughing hysterically at this situation.” You admit.

“My apologies young Mrs. I jest, but yes I am sure Lord Uzui would have words for me, even as his elder, trying to set up his wife.” The doctor chuckled lightly before picking the pad up off the table looking at Haru’s minimal notes. “Well there is no need to keep you waiting any longer, let’s get started. Hop up on that table for me and lay down. Haru, please take notes.”

Nervously you do as he says. You thought it was silly to be timid around these men. You, who had literally cut the heads off of demons, and had close calls with death, was nervous by this little old man and his embarrassed son. Taking a deep breath you tried to relax.

“I am going to disinfect my hands” the doctor stated. “I personally like the smell of it but some people hate it.” The smell was strong but not unpleasant, something like a musk and citrus mixed together. It was unique. You had never smelled anything like it at the Butterfly Mansion, but that wasn’t entirely surprising as Shinobu did make most of her own medicines. The doctor’s hands were cool against your skin as he pressed his fingers against your pulse point. Then moved about your body.

“Haru, note. Pulse ___, Blood Pressure __, Eyes and Ear clear, Internals feel good. No pain anywhere Mrs.?

“No. I’m fine.”

“That’s good, that’s good. I am going to feel for your uterus now, you may feel some pressure.” He places his stethoscope on you lower abdomen, placing his hand low then pressing inward with one hand and down with the other. It was a strange feeling to be sure. He sweetly patted your thigh and fixed your kimono when he was finished.  “Hmmm yes all seems very healthy for baby. I am going to take some blood and we will know for certain in a week.”

“A week??” you say sitting up abruptly, startling the old man somewhat. “Why so long?”

“It won’t be so bad, we may even get the results before then… but it has taken two week before.” He replies absentmindedly. “No worries we will know for certain soon” he says smiling. Your heart was pounding. ‘What if Tengen left on a mission before you knew for certain? What if something horrible happened? But what if I am wrong and just miscounted the days, and this is all just for nothing? I can’t tell him until I am sure!’ Worried by your panicked expression, the doctor patted your shoulder to reassure you.

“The week will be up before you know it! Trust me, all will be well. Do you have any questions about the test, or anything else?”

“Can I still have sex with my husband?” you blurt out without thinking. Haru’s note taking quickly comes to a halt, his ears twinging pink. A soft chuckle coming from your doctor.

“Yes Mrs. Uzui, you can. Unless your pregnancy were to become high risk, which is not common, your marriage bed can remain as it is.” You sigh loudly before hopping down from the table adjusting your robe and hair.

“Well that’s a relief.”

****

Lost in thought you rub your arm where your blood had been drawn as you walked through the town. Many shops lined the narrow street with their wares on display. Some were very traditional, selling family traditions that went hundreds of years back, while others housed the most modern of fashions and technologies. It was a great collision of words and truly a wonder to see. The town that you lived in was not nearly as large or modern as Tokyo but it wasn’t a rural town either. Bosting lots of interesting activities, marvels, and restaurants. You chuckle at the thought of Tengen trapped in a small rural town. His need for flair would drive him mad for sure. But this place kept him busy at least, and it wasn’t too far from the Demon Slayer Corps main estate.

Thankfully it was only early afternoon. So you had plenty of time to shop around. It would be nice to get your thoughts away from the fact that you would still have to keep your secret for at least another week. But you were confident that you could do it. You knew of a candy shop that was close and knew Suma had been craving her favorite sweet so you planned to make that your first stop.

The shop was small, but they weren’t scared to try out new things. Sweets from all around the world were on display. However, Monaka had always been Suma’s favorite. The sugary smell drifted down the street and you could always smell the shop before you saw it. Always a popular place, the shop was filled with people. Not wishing to be caught for too long, you weaved your way through the patrons, knowing exactly where Suma’s treats were located. The two of you frequented the shop at least once a month, as long as missions allowed. Snagging your find you beeline for the counter, money in hand.

“Mrs. Uzui! Welcome! It has been a while.” The owner said merrily.

“It’s been too long!” you reply “any new treats you're making this month?”

“We have got this new Dutch sweet, Stroopwafel, I had to buy a special iron and everything to make ‘em. Wanna give it a try? That husband of yours always seems to like new things.”

“Yes please! I’ll take them, along with the usual.” He hands you a parcel much larger than you were expecting, but you weren’t going to complain. You had a big family, and with any luck a growing family, so the more the merrier as they say. Paying quickly, you dip out of the shop just as a large group of teenagers enters. Thankful for your timing.

You knew Makio needed ink, and Hinatsuru wanted yams for a dish she wanted to try so you made your way to their respective shops. Pleased with yourself that you only got distracted once or twice you made your way home.

It was still late afternoon, just after 4 as the clock tower had read, so you were thankful you would be home in time to help get the house settled before Tengen would get home. Plus have time to convey the day’s events to everyone before someone spilled the secret. The front garden was lavish, with wisteria draping all along the exterior walls. Ever blooming, even when not in season. It brought you comfort knowing that this would always be your family's safe space.

“I’m back” you call from the entryway. Makio was the first to round the corner, her speed nearly knocking you down as she grabbed your shoulders.

“News?” she whispered near your ear. You sigh, rolling your eyes.

“I won’t know for another week.” You groan, Makio eyes go wide, signaling with her hand to lower your voice. Confused, you look back at the sandals lining the entry. Two very large ones sit peacefully next to Suma’s.

“Whoops” you whisper.

“Why so long? Aika made it sound like you get answers today” she whispered back, rubbing the sides of your arms as she pulled you in closer.

“It’s too early to know for sure, the doctor said a blood test would be more definitive.” The two of you continued your conversation in hushed tones.

Tengen had been relaxing in the kitchen as Hinatsuru prepared a stock for tonight’s dinner. He loved to watch her work as he sipped his tea. The gentle sway of her body, and the soft smile that graced her face as she worked brought him an ease that he couldn’t really recall except from early childhood. It was simple, yes, not flashy or flamboyant, but he loved it all the same. Your voice from the entry took his attention away from her cooking. A different kind of comfort came from knowing that now all the members of his family were safely home. Makio’s fast footsteps went to greet you, but suddenly your voices were hushed. That peaked his interest. After the strangeness of the night before, he could not help but feel like something was shifting in the house. Moving slowly to the entry his wives' voices became clearer.

“You should tell him. Tengen would want to know.” Makio whispered.

“I can’t” you breathe, desperation clear in your tone even when hushed.

“When will you go to him next?”

“He should send for me when he is ready. Hopefully soon.”

“Did he give you any other information today?”

Tengen stopped dead in his tracks. ‘Who were you meeting and why was it a secret.’ Holding his breath he tried to listen more closely. His emotions were running wild. He was confused, anxious, hurt, and angry all at once. It made his hands shake. His own rapid heartbeat was drowning out your voices. His household had been through so much death, destruction, and chaos. But it had also been a place of happiness, solace, and trust. Trust was the backbone of this house and he reminded himself of that. He trusted all his wives with his life, and hushed voices and secrets aside he was not going to let that affect him. Taking a deep breath and restoring his passive expression he rounded the corner to greet you. Makio and you were still huddled together but snapped upright at his presence.

“Tengen! You are home early today” you announce forcing a wide smile across your face.

“My love, welcome back!” he replied, pulling you against him and kissing the top of your head before leading you to the sitting room. Cushions and a low table sat in the middle of the room. Suma was spread out on her belly with a book in her hands. She paused, smiling as you all filed into the room and found your respective places.

“What did you get up to today?” Tengen asked as you both sat on the lush cushions. His hand never quite leaves the small of your back.

“Oh I went shopping!” you gleamed, taking your bag and placing it on the table. Hinatsuru had joined the family. You could tell by the way she was looking between you and Makio she was expecting a much more serious but happy conversation. When it didn’t come she cocked her head at Makio furrowing her brows. Makio gave a swift shake of her head.

“Hinatsuru, I picked you up some yams for that dish you’ve been wanting to make.” You said placing the veggies on the table before her.

“Oh thank you these are perfect” she replies.

“Ink for Makio” placing it in her hand as you spoke. “And sweets for Suma.” Suma quickly abandoned her book, reaching her hands out like a child for the bag. Clinging it to her chest as she hummed through her happiness.

“And I got a Dutch sweet called Stroopwafel for My Lord. The candy maker had said it was quite the ordeal to get the supplies to make, but wanted to try something new. I hope you like them.” You said with a soft smile. His hand was still on you, and his eyes were intensely studying your face.

“Unless… you don’t want them” you muttered when he continued to stare.

“Of course, thank you for the gift.” He finally replied. You smiled at him before continuing your conversation about the shops with the rest of the wives. Tengen studied you more. He watched your expression, how your blush tinted your face when you laughed. How you met the others with such kind eyes as you listened to them speak. The way you gently tucked Makio’s bangs behind her ear as she spoke of the training she did that day. Everything seemed so normal, and yet he couldn’t help the distance he felt from you. Your interactions last night, how you still weren’t looking directly at him, and your hushed voice earlier. It plagued his thoughts, this distance, he would remedy it.

“What treats did you get yourself?” Tengen interjected. Bringing your attention back to him.

“I didn’t need anything…” you said. In truth, there had been a kimono that had tempted you but you remembered that if you really were in such a condition, you wouldn’t be able to fit in it in a few months.

“Then let me treat you.” He said as he pulled you to stand with him. “I trust you can entertain yourselves my dears.” Suma had already returned to her book, while Makio and Hinatsuru gave each other knowing looks.

Tengen scooped you in his arms, with a quiet yelp escaping you. Your arms naturally came around his neck to balance you as he dashed down the hall and up the stairs with minimal effort. The door to his room was slid quickly open with his foot before he deposited you within the expansive room. Multiple futons were pushed together on the floor creating a large bed, with many pillows and blankets spread about. The room was made for comfort. It felt warm and safe. Tengen providing the ultimate protection and pleasure within its walls. You heard the door slide closed behind you, and soon Tengen’s strong arms wrapped around your waist. Pulling you back to rest against his expansive chest.

“I missed you today.” he hummed into your hair, breathing deep your scent. His hand had begun to massage down your waist and over your hips. Your kimono bunched up under his grip.

“As have I” you replied, as if by a will of their own your hips pushed back against his. Rough hands gripped you tighter as he began kissing down your neck then up to your ear. His breath tickled the delicate skin as he licked the base of your ear before speaking.

“Are you feeling alright today? Do you want me to stop?” Even through his confident actions, you heard the uncertainty in his voice. Turning in his arms to face him, you quickly kissed his lips. Peppering the light touches across his jaw, leaving the last on the tip of his nose.

“I am fine.” You say before kissing him deeply. “I want you.” You say between breaths, darting your tongue along his lips, and with a deep chuckle Tengen claims your mouth quickly. Pulling you flush against him. You use the momentum to wrap your legs around him. He braces your weight with one arm resting under your thighs while his other large hand grasps the pump flesh of your ass. It was much easier to claim your mouth when you were more on his level. He walked slowly towards the futons. His mouth never stops his assault on your lips. You couldn’t breath and your head was starting to swim as his tongue over took your mouth again. His strength never ceased to amaze you as he easily lowered you down to rest against plush bedding. You gasped for air when he finally moved his lips to your jaw and up to your ear again. Your hands explored his chest as you began to push his yukata apart and down his shoulders.

“Hmmm eager are we?” he whispers to you as he teasingly starts trailing kisses down your throat. Pausing at your pulse point. He breathes you in deeply, pushing his nose into your flesh. The smell is strange. A musk he can’t quite place with a hit on something citrus. A perfume perhaps? But it wasn’t a very feminine scent and you weren’t known for wearing such things. Perfumes could be dangerous at alerting enemies of your location.

“You smell strange.” He says, continuing to inhale at your pulse. You stiffen beneath him, just as you had done the night before. ‘Oh god! Is he doing to recognize it as antiseptic? How am I going to explain why I needed it!?” You panic to yourself and once again a swift lie comes falling from your lips.

“Oh do I? It must be something from the shops today.” Even without his hearing, Tengen could feel the pounding of your heart against his lips and your once fluid body becoming more and more rigid. Just like the night before he could feel the distance forming between you. Gripping harshly at the bedding around you, he clenched his teeth. He would be damned if he let anything else come between you.

“Should I go bathe? Is it bothering you?” you say weakly. Your hands were shaking slightly as they snaked their way into his hair, loosening the tie and letting the locks fall to frame his face. Seeing as you weren’t pushing him away as you had been the night before, he took it as a sign to continue. Pulling you up by the front of your robe he crashed his lips against you. The kiss was rough and not nearly as gentle as the ones before, your teeth clashing more than once. Tengen pulled at your robes, exposing your skin to him quickly. You desperately tried to do the same but his shoulders were too broad and his movements too abrupt. Sensing your struggles he swiftly pulled away from you. Catching your eyes in a heated gaze as he tore his clothes from his body.

He did not, however, give you the time to admire him before he was back shadowing your form with his frame. He bit harshly on your clavicle causing you to gasp arching your chest against his. His attentions pulled more gasps and moans from you as he worked his way to your breasts. Before he had the satisfaction of hearing your sweet moans for him, Tengen’s senses were once again halted by that scent. As strong as it had been on your neck. Needing confirmation he kissed his way back up to your clavicles, taking deep breaths as he went. The smell was not there. If it had been a new soap it would have been everywhere he assumed. The musk screamed of something masculine. Reminding him of an aftershave or cologne. He was determined to see where else the offending fragrance had permeated your skin.

None the wiser to Tengen’s inner thoughts, you try to urge him on. You run your hands down his neck and over his shoulders. Dragging your nails down his biceps to his forearms. You arch your back again bringing your chest to graze just under his chin. He quickly takes control again. Taking your breast in his hand he firmly squeezes your nipple between his thumb and forefinger.

‘The scent is there on your neck and breasts for certain’ he thought. Tengen moves lower trailing kisses in the wake of his search. He finds it again on your lower abdomen below your belly button and he grits his teeth again. Quickly he uses his large hands to easily spread your thighs. You moan as he begins to kiss your inner thigh. Your body succumbing to the anticipation of his strong advances. He finds it there as well, ghosting your inner thighs. ‘What was this? Why was it only located in places that he was privileged to touch you.’ Uncertain that he wanted the confirmation he pulled your thighs swiftly against and over his shoulders, leaving very little room between his face and your dripping sex.

“Tengen yes please!” you whimpered, your head falling back against the pillow in anticipation. However, Tengen was frozen. There it was, the smell that had been taunting him was lavished on your sex. You had met a man today. That he was certain of from your conversation with Makio. And now you smelled of a man’s cologne, in places he couldn’t fathom an innocent conversation ever being a part of. His brain couldn’t seem to process the strong emotions all at once. His heart pounded, he was angry and hurt. He wanted to accuse you, but claim you at the same time. He didn’t have any information, nothing concrete. His heart was aching at the thought of you with another man.

“Tengen?” you asked, lifting your head from the pillow when his movements stopped. “You okay down there?”

Tengen was sure of two things. The first was that he was determined to find out what was going on. And the second was that he was going to bring you to such pleasure a thought of any other man wouldn’t be possible. Without answering he pulled your hips down to his face sliding you off the pillows to lay completely flat on the floor. He made quick circles with his tongue around your clit before sucking it harshly into his mouth. The shock had a moan leaving your lips as your thighs pulled Tengen more firmly against you. You desperately grabbed at the bed sheets. The pressure was building quickly at your core. Tengen was ruthless, not leaving your clit for an instant. He was determined to bring you to orgasm fast and hard. Using the flat of his tongue he worked and massaged against you. His breathing was harsh through his nose as he refused to relinquish you. Each suck had your thighs shaking over his shoulders. Unable to keep your hips still you pushed yourself further against him grinding yourself on the bridge of his nose.

“Tengen!” you pant. His large hands grip at your flesh, his fingers digging deep into the skin of your hips as he controls your movements. As a warning his teeth graze at your sensitive bud demanding control, before continuing his attack with his hot tongue. You can’t help but to squeeze your thighs against his head. The sensations were becoming overwhelming.

“I’m close!” you yell, shocked at how quickly he has brought you over the edge. Your muscles begin clenching in one last final buildup. You can’t help but grab hold of Tengen’s hair as your orgasm hits you full force. You clench around nothing as your walls flutter in that delicious explosion of pleasure. Your legs are weak and already shaking. Your breath comes to you in short gasps as you come down from your high. Weakly you urge Tengen upward, pulling on his shoulders until he is flush against your naked body. His radiating heat is making a light sheen of sweat bloom over you. Taking his head in your hands you notice his intense look as you pull him close. His eyes are almost unreadable, but utterly fierce. You taste yourself as you kiss him, your slick coating his mouth and chin. Slowly you drag your hands down his chest and torso, your fingers touching each indentation of abs, before you find the light trail of hair leading you to his groin. However, before reach your goal Tengen grabs both your hands in his, pulling your arms above your head.

“No.” he states gruffly, the husk of his voice vibrating through your chest. “I am not done with you yet.” You sigh deeply as you lightly pull at his grip. His hands remain firm as he stares down at you. The fire in his eyes was intimidating. They were searching for something. Tengen couldn’t stop his mind from racing. The blush on your cheeks was light and pink, the shine of sweat on your skin was glistening in the setting sunlight. You were utterly beautiful to him. You looked so happy to him. You seemed so happy. But there was something between you. Something unsaid that was pulling on him. He wanted to possess you, claim you completely. He couldn’t help the nagging voice in the back of his head. ‘Am I being selfish?’

Tengen pulled you up as he shifted backward to sit. His long legs flanking you on either side as you sat on your knees in front of him. He still had hold of your hand and placed them to rest on his chest. You could feel his strong heartbeat beneath your fingertips. This new position afforded you the opportunity to admire his body. Your eyes roamed his chest, down his arms, up his thighs, and lastly to his cock that curved up to hit just below his belly button. You wanted to touch him so badly. Kiss down his chest and leave him gasping as you took him in your mouth. You wanted to feel him, have him claim you, have him fill you up over and over. Those thoughts were why you were almost certain you were pregnant with his child. That last thought has you smiling and a small laugh escapes you as you lose yourself in the thought. You continue to slip from the moment as you try to recall the potential activities that could have landed you in your situation. ‘There was that inn where Suma and I were both….’

“Love?”

“Yes, my lord Tengen” you say. Tengen searches your eyes from a moment. What normally was a joke felt oddly serious. His anxiety was eating him away. Did you use such titles because you felt you had to? Your marriage had been arranged. Were you only here because you had to be? Was this an obligation to you? Had you met someone who you truly wanted to be with?

Tengen’s grip loosened on your hands as his thoughts raced and you took the opportunity to run them down his stomach as you shifted closer to him. You scattered kisses along his chest, enjoying the slight salty taste of him on your lips. But it was not the taste you craved. Gripping his hips in your hands you began to lower yourself between his thighs. A quick gasp left Tengen before he stopped your descent. Confused, you search his eyes. The normal bright fuchsia was downcast but fierce.

“Show me how much you want me.” he says, his tone is soft but his eyes are demanding. Confused, you wait for some indication of what he wants. Leaning back to rest on his hands. He also raises one knee bracing himself. “Show me… here on my thigh.”

“What? Really?”

“Here” he says coolly. You follow his command as you slowly lift yourself to straddle his wide thigh. The man never missed a leg day and the rippling muscles of his thigh were firm against you. His heat radiated into your core, as you embarrassingly lowered yourself down against his flesh. Your slick from earlier already coating his skin. You sat still waiting for his instruction. None came other than the gentle movement of his knee bouncing you forward slightly. He was going to watch you pleasure yourself on him. Testing your resolve you slowly grid yourself toward him. The friction is pleasing but not enough to have you lost from the embarrassment. Tengen still makes no movement to assist you. His only movement comes from resting more firmly on his arms bracing behind him. His eyes however are ablaze. They are burning into you as he watches you move.

Again you move your hips against him, this time more fluidly as your readiness bathes more of his thigh. You can feel yourself becoming more aroused with each pass of your hips. Bracing one hand on his knee behind you and the other on his thigh in front of you, you begin to focus on the pleasure of it. Pushing yourself more firmly against him. You close your eyes as you pick up your pace. You gasp as he bounces you forward on his leg. Your wide eyes finding his quickly.

“Look at me.” he commands. Heat rises to your face as you inhale deeply, placing a hand on his chest before moving again. The passion in his eyes has your heart racing. Your thighs begin to shake with each pass. Your once fluid motion becoming jagged. Your cunt is aching from the lack of him.

“Tengen please…” Each thrust of your hips sends a jolt to your core as you rub your clit along the ripple of his thigh muscles.

“Cum for me love.” Tengen commands. His hands are still braced behind his back, but his knee does begin to bounce more to increase your pace. His cock twitches as you gasp his name over and over. You are coming undone. It isn’t enough and yet just enough to have you panting. Your thighs are burning, and you brace both your hands on his chest as he continues to jolt you along his thigh. You were losing your strength. Slowly you begin to slump against his chest. Tengen grabs your jaw to bring your face up as he stares down into your eyes. He refuses to look away as you continue to thrusts against him. Your orgasm starts as a little flutter and then bursts throughout your body as you gasp. Your hips chase the sensation as they lazily continue to grind against Tengen’s thigh. Tengen’s cock jolts as he watches your expression. His lust for you bursts as he watches your brows relax and your eyes fluttering closed. Your teeth sink into you lower lip as the aftershocks rattle your breath.

“Tengen I….” you start, but before you can finish Tengen’s lip seize yours. The kiss is hot and messy as he wraps his arms around your back pulling you flush against him. You are coated in sweat and your hair begins sticking to your face. Pushing you backward you lay still; panting against the futon as Tengen hovers over you. His gaze is still on fire as he runs his thumb over your cheek, relishing in the heat of your blush, and moving your hair away. Your hands absentmindedly begin to rub up and down his sides. One hand braces his weight next to your head, while the other slowly traces down your body leaving chill bumps in its wake even with the heat of the room. Continuing his eye contact he watches your reaction as he slips his hand between your thighs.

Arching at his touch on your sensitive cunt. You brace yourself by holding on to his wrist at your head and the bedsheets beneath you. You can’t help but squeeze your thighs around his wrist as his fingers rub gentle circles around your clit.

“Tengen I need you inside…”

“Here?” he asks as he brushes two of his large fingers against your silken opening. You are trembling beneath him. Small gasps escape you each time he drips his fingers into your overly ready body.  His cock is aching, begging for your attention as beads of precum slip down his length. But Tengen was a man on a mission, a trained demon slayer and shinobi, he did not fail his missions. Slipping one digit into your hot cunt he started pumping it slowly into you. Your breathing hitches as his palm made contact with your clit. Opening your thighs wide you locked your legs around his middle, using what little strength you had left to pull him closer to you. You pull his face down to kiss him as he teases you with his shallow thrusts.

“Tengen I need more.” You moan into his ear. Obliging your request he shoves two fingers into you quickly, his hand now flush with your sex as his long strong fingers curve upward finding your g-spot with ease. Your moan is loud, with little care to who can hear you. Tengen wastes no time as he begins to use his palm to rub you as his fingers dive deep. Each thrust of his hand has you moaning. You are dripping on his fingers and coating your thighs with your arousal. He continues to finger you deep, each thrust bringing your body one step closer to climax. Your body was responding quickly despite your previous peak. You wanted to be full but this was not the fill up you really wanted.

Tengen continued to rock his hand against you, using his considerable strength to plow into you. He was nearly at his breaking point. He had been hard for so long. He could feel his heartbeat with every pulse as his length ached to be touched. His hips started to move on their own in time with his fingers as he imagined being buried deep within you. Your body was clenching him so tightly. Sucking his fingers into your warmth as your body tightened with every thrust. You spurred him on as you kissed up his neck, biting lightly on his pulse point. Your breathing was ragged as he edged you closer and closer to yet another release. You weren’t sure how much more you could take. Your body was already so overstimulated. Like dominos your body fell into your orgasm, but unlike before your cunt clamped around your husbands strong fingers. Fluttering like birds wings against him. Tengen groaned as he imagined that feeling around his length. Slowly pulling his fingers from your dripping sex.

Tengen didn’t let you catch your breath. His need for you was becoming overwhelming as his body demanded release, but his anxieties from earlier began to creep back into his mind. What ifs plagued him and claiming you fully seemed wrong. Drawing your legs together he pulled them both over one shoulder. Having barely caught your breath from your last orgasm, you couldn’t prepare yourself when Tengen’s strong frame lifted your lower half off the futon entirely. His strong arms held your legs together squeezing your thighs tight. Lining up his throbbing cock at the junction of your sex; he pushed his way between your thighs. The head of his cock grazing against your overly sensitive clit.

“Ah..TENGEN! sen…so sensitive…” you stumble between shaking breaths.

“You can do it.” He says between clenched teeth as he thrusts again between your thighs. “Cum for me one more time.”

Tengen’s pace is feral. Thrusting rapidly as his head slips between your soaked folds bruising your clit with every snap of his hips. He was holding your thighs so tightly together as he rutted between them that you worried his grip would leave welts. But your passion filled brain couldn’t care less. Each thrust smeared more of your arousal and precum between you both paving the way for more of his plunges. You were exhausted. Barely able to balance your upper body as Tengen held you. Your muscles shook from their overuse. Your sex ached from its repeated climax and yet your pleasure was building again.

Tengen’s breathing was harsh. He had held himself back for so long and now his libido demanded to be satiated. Each time his cock made contact with your bud he felt you shake beneath him. He imagined how your cunt would be squeezing him within an inch of his life. Milking him for everything he was worth. He groaned, pulling your thighs tighter together. Planting kisses on your ankles near his shoulder he pulls you closer, his balls slapping your backside with every snap of his hips. Tension was building at the base of his spine as each thrust.

“Ah Tengen please… I don’t think I can”

“You can.” He says thrusting hard, making a point to linger over your clit. Biting your lip you moan through clenched teeth. Your nerves were on fire, sending sparks though you. Your muscles jumping and clenching at every sensation Tengen was causing. Your hand dug into the flesh of his thighs causing a moan to catch in his throat. His pace was beginning to falter as his hips jerked forward chasing his own release.

“Do you want my cum?” he asks through heavy breaths.

“YES! Please Lord Tengen!”

“Then cum for me, love. Cry out my name." He was so close, but he was determined to make you climax again. Leaning forward he brought your legs closer to your upper body nearly folding you in half. This new angle had him piston against your sex more fully. Your cunt clenched around nothing, the muscles sore but still building for that final push. You could do it, you told yourself. Holding your breath each movement from your husband was one notch closer to completion.

“Cum for me Y/N. cum for me now!” Tengen demanded.

“Tengen just a little more… oh god… oh god TENGEN!!” Fire lit your veins as your final orgasm tore through you. You could do little more than gasp for air as you rode out your high. Your nails digging deep into your husband’s thighs.

Tengen’s hips jerked, pushing the head of his cock through your thighs as he spilled himself over your stomach and chest. He was hot and sticky as he painted you. His cock jumps with each pulse as he continues to bathe you in his cum. Releasing your legs his arms came down on either side of your head. Caging you in as he desperately tried to catch his breath. You were completely spent, not even having the energy to shift your legs to a more comfortable position. The aftershocks of your orgasm still had you shaking.

Tengen’s hands were moving before he could explain it. Some primal part of his brain needed to claim you more. His large hand gathered the mess on you as he smeared his cum over your body. Rubbing the sticky liquid into the skin over your stomach and breasts. He was coating you in himself. Leaning forward he buried his face in your neck breathing deep. The offending musk from earlier was gone, masked by the smell of sweat, sex, and his cum. Tengen lightly kissed up your jaw. Humming you managed to open your tired eyes to give him a sweet smile. He peppered your face with more light kisses. One on each cheek and the tip of your nose before tenderly taking your lips. A shiver ran down your spine as your sweat and his cum began to cool in the evening air.

“My lord… I’m cold” you manage your voice quiet. Without a word your husband shifted your position taking you in his arms with minimal effort. Holding you against his chest he stood quickly. Just as he did before he used his foot to slide open the door. He walked down the narrow hallway and down the back stairway. They led to the lower level splitting at the bottom, to the left was the kitchen, and to the right the spacious bath house. Hinatsuru caught Tengen’s gaze before he went toward the bath, giving him a wide grin and blush at his nude brazenness.

The bath house was warm as the water was kept hot, unless of course they were on a mission. It cost them a fortune in coal but it was a comfort Tengen did not wish to part with. And for moments like these you definitely understood why. Stepping into the tub, Tengen lowered you both into the steaming pool. A large bath for a large family. Sighing the water instantly began to soothe your aching body. Tengen lounged back pulling you to lay against his chest. Your pulse was just now beginning to find its normal beat. The blush that you carried for most of the evening was still scalding your face, but if questioned you would blame it on the bath. A grin was spreading across your face hidden by a veil of your hair. You were so happy, so content. Moving your hand you rest it against your lower stomach your thoughts again begin to drift. Of course it was a surprise, and there was still so much uncertainty. But you truly wished with your heart that soon you would know for sure that you and Tengen would have a little one to contend with.

Tengen shifted beneath you as he grabbed the soap from a nearby shelf. Lathering it between his hands he began to lightly run it over your body. Starting at your neck. He knew it was silly but he disliked the idea of washing his scent from you. Like some madman he had been determined to claim you, like you were his property. He was ashamed of himself. Just the mere idea of another having you had made him act like a child. Hushed voices and a strange smell had made him become a possessive brute. But his anxiety wouldn’t let it go. He washed down your chest and arms, down your back, anywhere he thought that scent persisted. Lastly his hand slid gently between your legs.

“Hmmmm” you hummed half asleep as your over sensitive body jerked away from the touch.

“Sorry my love” Tengen said, halting his actions and kissing your temple. ‘I am a brute indeed’ he thought. A soft tap came from the door before Hinatsuru slid it open. Slipping inside quietly she closed the door before a chill disturbed the warm peace. She knelt by the tub, brushing your hair from your sleeping face.

“It looks like you wore her out.” Hinatsuru said, smiling fondly at you before glancing at Tengen. Her purple eyes were so warm, love pouring out of every fiber. Brushing Tengen’s silver locks back from his eyes, she ran her fingertips over his cheek.

“Dinner is ready. I don’t wish for both of yours' to get cold.”

“I don’t think this one will wake for dinner.” He said rubbing your back.

“I will not have her missing meals… it’s important that she eats.” Hinatsuru said her tone left no room for negotiation. As she stood to leave the bath house Tengen reached for her hand.

“Darling… you would tell me if you were unhappy right?”

“Oh course I would.”

“You all would… wouldn’t you?” Tengen’s voice was soft, but his eyes were worried. His brows creasing as he searched her eyes.

“Yes, we would… don’t you remember our promise?” She says squeezing his hand. Chuckling deep, Tengen brings her hand to his lips, kissing each knuckle.

“Yes my darling I do”

“Then I suggest you hurry up and bathe. Lest you have three hungry unhappy wives.” She playful pulled at his hand before leaving the room. Tengen sat quiet for a moment. Letting the sounds of your steady breathing fill his ears. Another wave of anxiety bubbled up in his stomach like a fly that kept buzzing around him. He had made a promise years ago that his wives came first, but he had never considered that that might mean letting them go, even if it was for their happiness. He would have to get to the bottom of these fears, or they would surely eat him alive. Because…

“I can’t let you go” he whispers, nuzzling his face into your hair.

Chapter Text

The morning had started not only with the rise of the sun but the heavy moans that echoed throughout the house. Without missions to divert Tengen’s energy he had more than enough to rouse the family for an early morning romp. Tengen had risen with the sun in more ways than one, and had all the wives breathless before breakfast. Suma snuggled into Tengen’s side, while Hinatsuru rested on his outstretched arm. You were still catching your breath, lying flat on your back. Tengen had been demanding of you for the last few days. You weren’t sure why he felt the need to overwhelm you but at the same time you weren’t really complaining. Makio hummed a sigh as she rested her head on Tengen’s chest, her hips still draped over his. Tengen gently brushed her hair through his fingers, having little regard for his own tousled silver locks, as calm and sleep began to overtake the bed chamber again.

Tengen was happy. Things seemed to be back to normal. The hushed voices and odd behaviors had fizzled out, and his attentions on you hadn’t seemed unwanted. Having his family close and within his safe grip made his heart find an ease it usually didn’t have. He saw his brother throw away wives like trash. Saw his father destroy everything for the sake of power. Tengen knew their lives were dangerous but it was a price they paid to atone for their previous one. But here you all were together, nestled in each other’s bodies, the bedding crumpled and wrapped around you in a nest of your own making. Here in this room, but really any room in which you were all together, the family was safe and warm.

A tap came from the window as long talons and beak slowly slid it open and down the wooden frame. As soon as the bird had enough clearance it hopped into the room. Bouncing quickly as it made its way to stand next to Tengen’s head. The room was still for a moment before the bird squawked. You bolted upright while the rest of the room remained still. Only Tengen took notice as he eased himself up on his elbows still resting Makio on his chest. He noticed the panic in your eyes as you stared at the bird, waiting for whatever words would fall from its lips.

“HASHRIA MEETING TODAY AT NOON!” the bird yelled “HASHRIA MEETING AT NOON!” without any other word the bird flew to the open window and disappeared into the remaining shadows of the dawn. You let out the breath you had been holding.

“Damn crows.” Suma whined burrowing her face back into Tengen’s warmth.

“I guess that’s our que to get out of bed.” Hinatsuru sighed sitting up to glance around the room. When she made eye contact with your still worried look she tilted her head concerned. Furrowing her brows her eyes silently questioned you. Glancing down you placed a palm on your stomach, then back at her. Without a word she understood your thought process. A mission would come eventually.

“I don’t want to!” Suma whined again. Makio chuckled.

“Does this count as our morning exercise?” she questioned kissing Tengen’s chest as she spoke.

“The two of you are starting to sound like you’ve had too much time off. Are you getting lazy on me?” Tengen said with a soft laugh.

“Oh please, we have more energy than we know what to do with.” Makio rebuffed, shifting her hips as she spoke. Tengen groaned deeply. His head falling back slightly as he was still buried deep inside her.

“If you keep this up I will be ready for round two.” He chuckled, shifting his hips upward to meet hers. Playfully Makio bit Tengen’s pec before sitting herself more upright, bracing her hands against his chest.

“We have hours before you have to leave for your meeting… do you think you can handle us again dear husband?” Makio’s voice dropped as she rocked her hips in earnest against him. Suma perked up at her challenge as she began to kiss up Tengen’s side to his neck. She placed kisses along his jaw before taking advantage of Tengen’s position as she claimed his lips. He hummed deeply as Suma dominated his mouth with her tongue. Tengen surrendered as Makio rocked her hips again and Suma continued to claim his face, letting his arms fall out to his sides. Tengen reached for Hinatsuru’s thigh. Snaking his hand around her plump flesh he pulled her closer. His other arm sought out your warmth but grasped at nothing. Blinded by Suma’s veil of hair and constant kisses Tengen shifted upward to look for you, breaking his kiss with Suma as she kissed along his jaw instead.

You sat still next to them. Your eyes were distant as clearly your mind was elsewhere. The past few days had lulled you back into your normal routines. Of course you were still anxiously waiting for the doctor to send a message but your days had returned to normal. It took the stupid crow with its potential for missions to snap you out of that routine. What if the call to orders came before you had your results? On one hand if you left on a mission and you were pregnant it would be extremely dangerous for the baby, but on the other hand if you didn’t go and later found out it was a false alarm, what if someone got hurt because you weren’t there… What if someone got hurt because you were there and was trying to protect you? The what if’s were playing in your mind on repeat and it had your breath catching in your throat. Tengen’s hand gripped your thigh.

“Love?” Tengen asked. His voice pulled you back to the moment. The incredibly hot moment as Tengen was being overtaken by Makio and Suma. However, you couldn’t quite silence your mind. Leaning forward you kissed Tengen’s cheek, then Suma’s, and Makio’s before standing.

“I am going to go get some water.” You say as you walk over to give Hinatsuru a kiss on her forehead. Without a glance back at the scene you left the room. Tengen heard it. There it was again, the anxious beat of your heart and the distance that had plagued him days ago was back in an instant. However, it was not only your heart beat that had him worried. Glancing over to Hinatsuru, Tengen’s breath caught in his chest. Light tears had sprung to her eyes as she watched the door you had left from.

“Darling what’s wrong?” He said pulling her closer to him. A warm smile spread across her face but didn’t quite reach her eyes.

“It’s nothing” she says before kissing him lightly. Makio shifted again, pushing more of her weight forward to have Tengen on his back again as Suma and Hinatsuru flanked his sides. Tengen was conflicted. His anxiety wanted him to seek you out. However, he had others to care for too. It was times like these that he wondered what other households looked like. Maybe that was what you wanted… someone that could prioritize your time always, that you didn’t share, that didn’t put you in danger… that could… that could…. His mind raced.

You didn’t rejoin them. And Tengen’s thoughts wouldn’t let him forget it.

***

The sun was so warm in the garden. Tengen had left for his meeting reluctantly but you assumed it was because he wanted to spend the rest of the day as he had that morning, completely obvious to his anxious thoughts. The family had decided to soak up some of the warmth before the night turned cool again. Laying out on a large blanket all four wives relished the light. Suma had brought her book, which she had nearly finished, laying on her stomach to read. Makio sat hunched over as she was overtaken by the novel that Suma had just finished. Periodically Suma would interject.

“Have you got to the part where the mistress was discovered?” She asked.

“Suma if you spoil one more part of this book. I will hit you with it!” Makio yelled. You glanced up from your own book as Suma threw up her hands in defeat.

“Sorry! Sorry!!! It’s just such an intense scene!”

“Is it now?” Hinatsuru baited.

“Yeah, the wife has a suspicion that her husband is seeing another woman, but when she finally discovers who it is and goes to confront her. She’s DEAD!” Suma elaborates. The book in question comes down hard on the back of Suma’s head with a thud.

“Suma why do you fall for such easy traps?” you ask as you try to hold in your laugh. Makio is gearing up to bop her again as Suma rolls away in defense, sitting up on her knees to stop Makio.

“Hey! SORRY!!!”

“I’m gonna kill you! I really liked this one!” Makio yelled.

“It does sound quite interesting.” Hinatsuru continued, as if nothing was happening. Her eyes were closed as she laid back to bask in the sun.

“I didn’t ruin everything!”

“Didn’t ruin what?” Tengen interjected from the porch. He was still dressed in his uniform but was slipping off his boots to relax. In true shinobi form arriving without any other sound. All the ladies startled at his voice. The bright sun caught his golden bands around his arms and the breeze lightly blew his jeweled headband gently. He was truly a sight to see.

“Welcome back Lord Tengen!” Suma cried. She stood from your gathering to rush to his side before pulling lightly on his arm for him to join the scene. Smiling wide, he followed her to take a seat between you and Makio. Tengen sighed deep as he surveyed the scene resting back on his hands and crossing his ankles.

“Tengen you have to protect me! Makio is bullying me again!” Suma whined.

“She keeps ruining my books! I am about to start implementing the rule that I have to read them first because I know how to keep a secret.” Makio interjects, shooting a menacing look at Suma.

“Is that so Angel? What secrets are you so good at keeping?” Tengen jokes. Makio’s expression tenses as her eyes dart to yours then back to Tengen’s. He didn’t miss the look. It was fast but he was trained to study and predict people. It was what made him a good shinobi. His thoughts instantly returned to the day of both of your hushed voices in the foyer. Suddenly the world went quiet as all the wives held their breath at the same moment. You had filled them in on all of your thoughts and the details of the doctor visit. Pieces of a puzzle were forming in Tengen’s mind and a picture of his own making was beginning to appear. It was a reality he didn’t want to believe. All his wives knew your secret. He didn’t want to believe it but the evidence was there.

“Nothing… I mean like book plots and stuff.”

“Suma is baited too easily.” You chime in.

“I am not!”

“How did the wife discover the affair?” Hinatsuru said, feigning a most intrigued tone, sitting up to give both you and Makio a knowing look. “It must have been so shocking!”

“It was a complete coincidence! Her husband had been acting kinda strange and distant for…” the book came down hard on Suma’s head again. “Makio!!! That hurts! See Tengen, she is bullying me!”

“It seems like you’ve brought this on yourself babe.” Tengen says with a light chuckle. “But books about affairs and secrets… I’m not sure I would want to read that.”

“Oh gosh it was so much more though!” Suma replies leaning back to soak up the sun oblivious to Tengen’s quick beating heart. “When the wife really started investigating it went so much deeper than just affairs, dark secrets and hurt feelings that her husband had been harboring for years. It was so dramatic.”

“It has been rather dramatic so far. I think you would like it, Tengen. If you could get through it without a certain someone telling you every plot point!” Makio says. Tengen was too distracted to comment. As his wives continued to argue about books. His thoughts had strayed to affairs and the oddly distant behavior you had shown. Was Suma trying to tell him something? Tengen traced his hand gently up your arm, his fingertips lingering on a faint scar you had received during one of your missions. How could you be so close and yet feel so far away? You noticed his downcast eyes and distracted nature. Clearly his mind was elsewhere and all you could think of was the crow from the morning. Lacing your fingers with his you let his large hand engulf yours, squeezing tightly to draw back his attention. His eyes search yours quickly.

“Your meeting didn’t take very long.” You say, closing your book and resting it in your lap. “It was not bad news I hope.”

“Unfortunately, it is rarely good news these days.” He replies with a sigh. “We have a potential mission coming up.” Your grip in his falters for a moment as your heart skips.

“Do you know any specifics yet? Like when we might be leaving?”

“No not yet.” A heavy sigh leaves your lips before you realize and your anxiety from the morning returns. Tengen can hear the unsteady beat of your heart. Your eyes wander in the direction of the doctors’ house. It had been nearly a week, maybe just maybe you could find out in time. You were starting to think you would need to just tell Tengen. Maybe the Corp could give you information quicker. You scolded yourself for not thinking of it earlier. Shinobu was a master Hashira. She would have said you were wasting her time but she could have definitely given you answers. You think. Tengen continued to study your expression. He was focused on your distant eyes and furrowed brow.

“Love… This morning, well not just this morning… Is there something you need to tell…”

“Y/N a messenger for you at the front gate.” Aika announces from the back porch. Everyone turns at her voice. Your body jumps as it moves without hesitation. Your heart is pounding. A messenger! If it wasn’t a crow it could only mean one thing.

“Excuse me.” you say, Tengen’s words being lost in the sounds of your pulse. You pat his hand before relinquishing his grip. Again the remaining wives catch their breaths at the same time. It was a habit Tengen was getting tired of hearing. They all watched after you as you followed Aika back into the house. The garden was so distant in your mind that you didn’t spare your partners even a parting goodbye as you thanked Aika for her information. At the foyer you practically jumped into your sandals as you hastily pulled a haori over your shoulders. Opening the front door you spy the messenger still standing next to the wisteria lined gate.

“You have a message for me?” you ask as you approach the gate. The messenger bows low as he holds the envelope in two hands out for you. Taking it quickly from him you rip it open. Pulling the contents out quickly while trying not to tear the letter. Tengen had silently followed you to the front door as he watched you scan the letter. Your eyes were darting across the page and your cheeks were beginning to burn pink.

“Do you have a reply Mrs.?” The messenger asks, his voice pulling you slightly from your reading. You scanned the letter again but to no avail.

“No. But thank you for your swift delivery.” You say, giving him a distracted bow to send him on his way. The letter shook slightly in your hand. You had hoped it would have your results but it merely read. ‘Mrs. Uzui, Great news, we have received your result and look forward to seeing you at your earliest convenience.’ Your face was burning as the blood was pounding through your body. Tears were springing to your eyes without warning. The anxieties from the past week were all bubbling up. You were so ready to know. You thought that this letter was going to be all your answers. Sighing, you look back at the house. You contemplated going back inside but the thoughts rapidly were dispelled. You were going to get your answers before you stepped foot back into that house. Whether it was from the doctor or you going all the way to the butterfly mansion. You would know before you went back through those doors. Crumpling the letter in your hand you were set on your resolve.

Tengen still studied you from the front door while he slid his body slightly out of view. When you looked back at the house he saw your determined look, but with the tears in your eyes he wasn’t sure what to make of your expression. You grasped the letter in your hand tightly, adjusting the haori over your shoulders, and flew out the front gate. Tengen’s heart was pounding. He didn’t want to follow you but he was putting on his shoes before he knew what he was doing. Aika rounded the corner just in time to see him bolt from the entry, disappearing with his shinobi speed.

You ran through town as fast as you could toward the doctors’ house. It was such a lovely spring day that it seemed like everyone was out enjoying it. The breeze was light and cool as it blew the cherry blossoms from the trees. Scattering the town in a dusting of pink. You were so focused on your task that you did not notice your husband trailing you through the crowds. The doctor’s house was blissfully nestled on a quiet street with tall cherry trees that lined the road. With little hesitation you turned into the front garden and walked to the front door. Knocking quickly you were ushered inside with little fuss.

Tengen watched as you turned off the busy street to one of the side roads. He didn’t really know what he was doing. The only thing racing through his mind was that you had left without a goodbye and that something had upset you. The distance he was feeling was pulling at his heart strings. He went into town as often as you did but he was not familiar with this street. It wasn’t the business district. There were no shops or restaurants. It was a residential street. A street with nice homes and families. A normal street. Why would you be here?

Tengen scanned the area quickly but had lost sight of you. Stunned as he wasn’t that far behind you he figured you had gone into one of the homes. But which one? Jumping like a cat Tengen balanced in one of the trees as he continued to search for you. You were here, he knew it. But which house?

Smiling at the housekeeper who had let you in, you waited in the foyer for a moment before being led back to the familiar room that was the doctor’s office. The front windows were open as the breeze fluttered the drapes gently. The cherry trees created a pink shield from the other residences. It was such a peaceful place. The birds chirped loudly singing their songs of love. The door opened behind you. Turning to expect the elder doctor you were surprised to see Haru standing before you. His once messy bun was replaced with groomed flowing long black locks and his deep green yukata favored his pale skin tone.

“Mrs. Uzui, we didn't expect you so soon. I sent out that letter not half an hour ago.” He spoke, joining you near the window. “Father just left for another appointment so I hope you don’t mind it just being me today.”

“Of course not! I am sorry for rushing in but I just couldn’t wait. When I got your letter I was a little overtaken by the fact that it didn’t have the result.”

“I apologize for that. Patient doctor confidentiality and all. We can’t just give medical information to messengers. We have heard horror stories from Tokyo of gossip getting out because of messenger boys.” He said with an apologetic smile. “Did you run here?”

“Yes.” You say with a bashful smile. “I truly hope you were not inconvenienced.”

“Not at all… but I do think it would be cruel of me to keep you waiting.” Haru replied. Walking to his father’s desk he pulled a file from the stack. Flipping through the papers until he produced a folded envelope. Rejoining you at the window the sunlight was glittering through the trees, the light jumping around the room as the limbs swayed in the breeze.

“Haru I don’t think you have a cruel bone in your body” you say with a laugh as you take the envelope from his hands. Tengen was at the end of the street with his eyes closed listening for any evidence of you. Your laugh came like a bird song to him; trickling down the narrow street to fill his ears. Without a moment's hesitation he jumped from limb to limb before finding his target. Using all his shinobi skills he let the branches of the tree disguise his form. Kneeling down to get a better look between the pink blossoms. There you were. Your smile was sweet and warm as you looked at the man in front of you. Tengen didn’t recognize him. He was not a member of the Corp that he was sure of. Tengen figured the man was the opposite of him in every way. His long black hair was swaying in the breeze, he was tall but lean and looked utterly harmless. But here you were smiling up at him as you spoke. The house was not as grand as his but it was painted in spring blooms. And on a spring day such as this one, it was the epitome of peace.

Your hands shook slightly as you tried to open the letter and Haru placed his own on your wrist to steady you. You appreciated the gesture. You were so nervous that the blood rushing through your ears was drowning out the world. What if it was negative? You had told yourself not to get excited, to not plan, to not envision the future. But you couldn’t help it. Each night as you rested in Tengen’s arms you imagined what your children would look like. You see Tengen surrounded by kids as flashy and beautiful as he was; and you couldn’t help but imagine how Tengen would be the absolute best father, righting all the wrongs done to him and his siblings by pouring his love into his children. Opening the letter slowly you scan the text in a daze until your eyes land on a single word…POSITIVE.

“Positive.” you whisper. Your quiet tone has Haru lean in close to peek at the letter in your hands. Haru’s forehead is nearly touching yours.

“Positive.” He whispers back smiling down at you. You can’t contain your smile as you look up at him. All of your anxieties are replaced by pure happiness and the weight you had unconsciously been caring lifts from your shoulders. Butterflies fill your stomach.

“POSITIVE!” You giggle. Before you realize it your body engulfs Haru in a strong hug. Throwing your arms around his neck as he lifts you off the ground. He hugs you back. His own laugh fills your ears. Haru’s long locks cascading to create a veil between you and the outside world. A world that on any other day would have been oblivious but today had prying desperate eyes.

“Positive for sure!” he says, squeezing you gently before placing you back on the ground. Tengen couldn’t believe what he was seeing. His breathing was labored as if he was fighting some demon. And in some ways he was. A part of him was shocked, hurt, and confused. Another part of him was livid, rage filling his limbs. He wanted to bust through the open window. He wanted to rip you from this man’s grasp. He wanted to hurt him. But the smile on your face was stopping his heart. You looked so utterly happy. It was a happiness that he wasn’t sure he had ever seen light up your eyes. He could hear your fluttering heartbeat. The heartbeat that he heard on your wedding day, and when you were in the afterglow of his intimate attentions on you. And now again in the arms of this man. Tengen’s heart felt like it was splitting in two as it fell to his stomach. That ball of anxiety that had been living there like a hornets nest now felt like it had been kicked. Swarming his head with cruel thoughts and images of you leaving him. Tengen’s footing slipped as his head was swimming. He fell gracefully to the ground landing on his feet. As he reclaimed his composure his eyes sought out your figure in the window but you were gone. His breathing was rattling in his throat.

The front door of the house opened as both you and Haru left. Haru was trailing slightly behind you as you walked. Tengen had little time to hide himself as you walked through the front gate. Your smile was still plastered on your face. You looked like you were almost glowing with it. You stopped briefly letting Haru catch up to walk by your side. Turning your back on Tengen, he watched as you both walked down the street together. Determined to intervene, Tengen stood quickly. Walking silently down the street behind you. He was closing the distance fast until a strong breeze tore down the street carrying petals and leaves with it. The breeze dashed around you and Haru tousled both your hair and clothes. And there it was, hitting Tengen like a harsh slap to his face. The smell of musk and citrus.

It was unmistakable. It was the smell that had haunted him that day. That had been spread over your naked body. That had taunted him and caused him to act out. That he had convinced himself was nothing more than his fears getting the better of him. It was this man. This man in front of him that smiled fondly at you as you spoke. This man had had you. Did you love him? Was that why you looked so happy? Was it his embrace that you wanted? He had sent for you and with not even a goodbye you went running to his side. Were you imagining him when you laid in his arms? Tengen stopped dead in his tracks. How long had you wanted to leave him?

“When will you tell him?” Haru's voice reverberated down the street to Tengen’s ears.

“Later this afternoon when I get home.” You said with a smile. Tengen breathing stopped. This was too much. How could you say such a thing so easily and with a smile no less. “I have something I want to get first though.”

“Do you mind if I join you? I have something to pick up in town as well” Haru asks.

“Not at all. I am happy to have company.”

****

The center of town was full of activity. Bustling with activities as shops and restaurants were overflowing. You were still up in the clouds as you absentmindedly rubbed your lower belly. You still couldn’t quite believe it. It was happening. It was real. You had the evidence tucked away safe against your heart. You wanted to get home quickly but you had had a dream about this situation a few nights before and couldn’t get the image out of your head. The thought of it made your heart flutter and your cheeks stain pink.

“A fabric shop?” Haru questioned as you stood outside the entry. Smiling wide, you nodded your head. Still confused, he simply smiled in return.

“I have just a small errand, I will meet you back here, if that’s alright?” He said taking a step down the street. You nodded again before he turned to leave. Tengen had found it useless to use the streets as they were too teaming with people. He had retreated to the rooftops as he watched you meander through town. He was still in shock and he was desperately looking for some reasoning. Some explanation. Anything to prove his cruel mind wrong. He wasn’t sure what he wanted. Did he want to stay here and watch you or follow the man that was stealing you away? As Haru made his way down the street Tengen decided to follow him. Jumping from rooftop to rooftop Tengen followed as Haru naïvely went about his business.

The fabric shop was small but cozy. It smelled of strange textiles from all around the country and boasted some of the most beautiful patterns. The attendant was quick to help. Her old frame swayed as she walked to greet you.

“Hello dear, welcome. Can I help you with anything today?”

“Actually yes, I am making an Onbuhimo and am in need of fabric.” You say smiling.

“Oh really an infant sling? Congratulations!” the old woman says. “I have some nice strong fabrics that will do great for that.” Walking you slowly to the back of the shop the walls were lined with basic fabrics. Smiling to yourself as you realized none of these would quite do.

“Excuse me, I am sure these are the traditional choices but I am in need of something a bit bolder.”

“More bold?”

“Correct. I spied one toward the front that I actually quite liked.” You said leading her back to the front. You had spotted it when you had been looking at the kimono a week ago and your mind hadn’t quite let the idea go. It still sat on its bolt but the gold and red silk were glistening in the sun. Taking the fabric in your hand you started to unfold it revealing the pattern of gold chrysanthemums with a deep red background.

“Oh my! That’s much too expensive for something like an Onbuhimo.” She says.

“But it would work for one, correct?” you ask.

“Well yes, but caring around a baby in something as extravagant as this is impracticable.”

“Extravagant is just what I need.” You say unfurrowing the fabric further.

“You shouldn’t need that much.” She relied taking the fabric bolt from your hand. You smile gently at the older woman.

“My husband is by no means a small man. I will definitely need more than average.”

“This is for your husband?” She asked, confused.

“Yes… I have a sneaky suspicion that this child will be going everywhere with its father.” You laugh. The idea of Tengen with a baby sling around him and the gentle tuft of hair from your sleeping child peeking out had filled your dreaming mind. It was such a strong image that you kept returning to it over and over, even when you had tried not to. The child nestled in his chest as he hummed. Slung across his back as he strolled through town. It was so cute it made your heart feel like it was bursting. Undeterred by the shop keeper’s suggestions you bought the fabric. She folded it up in a plain linen cloth and tied it for the same trip home.

Tengen had watched as Haru slipped down a side street to the nearby temple. He spoke with a few people, but didn’t do much to be remarked upon. Tengen could tell he was popular. He had been approached numerous times with people asking about his father. Was this the kind of man you wanted? Someone so unremarkable, so unflashy, so normal? Haru was circling back to the fabric shop to meet you and Tengen was watching him like a cat watches a bird. There was something predatory about it as he stalked from rooftop to rooftop. The man smiled as he saw you standing next to the shop's entry.

“I hope I didn’t keep you.” He says rejoining you as you walk. “Did you get everything you needed?”

“Yep” you say with a small giggle. You couldn’t help your happiness. It was leaking from you with every interaction. You both walked side by side as you made your way home. There was a small river that divided the two parts of town and you often found yourself walking that way because of its beautiful atmosphere. Mature trees lined the river and the subtle sounds of water over river stones was so tranquil. A small bridge connected the two sides and it is one of your favorite places. Tengen had once sat you on the bridge's rails as he had kissed you deeply after a night of drinking. Stealing your breath with no regard to anyone who might have seen. Tengen was now once again trailing you from the limbs of the trees. He wasn’t sure what he was waiting for or why he was still watching but he couldn’t stop. He could just barely make out your voices over the river and his distance but he didn’t dare get closer.

“You don’t have to walk me all the way home Haru.” You say stopping midway across the bridge. “I know you must be busy.”

“Well I guess you have a point. But I have something for you.” Turning to face him Haru takes both your hands in his. Tengen freezes. The image of this man holding your hands as the breeze gently sways the branches and leaves sears into his mind. He can’t do it anymore. His heart can’t take it. Tengen sits down, letting his back brace against the tree as his legs dangle from the branch. He feels so defeated. Not an hour ago he was ready to fight, but the joy he could sense from you was halting him. He reminded himself of your promise, that no matter what happened you and the others came first. You had tears in your eyes as you had left the house today and now you looked happier than he had ever seen you.

Haru placed the Omamori into your hands. Bowing slightly as you received it. Opening your palms you saw that the talisman read for good health and childbirth. Smiling sweetly at the man before you. You thanked him with a bow of your own.

“Thank you Haru, this means a lot.”

“Of course! I hope I wasn’t too informal. Though by comparison to my father I think I am doing okay.” He laughed, placing his hand behind his head. “It is my sincerest hope that you and your family remain blessed.”

“You are too sweet. Thank you again.”

“Once you have got things settled a bit you should see my father, plus I still need to introduce you to a few midwives.”

“Absolutely! See you soon!” You shout. Taking your leave of Haru you waved a goodbye before darting across the bridge and down the street towards your home. Tengen watches from the trees as your goodbyes ring through his ears. He can’t seem to find the strength to move. Instead he watches your retreating form dash down the road toward your house.

The faint smell of wisteria was your first indication that you were close. You were so excited you could barely contain yourself. Jumping the gate with your parcels pulled close to your chest you nearly pulled the front door from its frame as you ran inside. Kicking your shoes away as you rounded the corner into the sitting room. The wives were resting there as you bolted in the room. Their expectant eyes meeting your thrilled gaze.

“Oh my god… oh my god” Makio said before you spoke.

“Is it really happening?” Hinatsuru asked. Unable to keep your excitement bottled up any longer you bounce up and down as you nod vigorously.

“It’s really happening!” You yell. All three women are off the floor in an instant crushing you with loving hugs. Kissing your face all over. Happy tears start to stream down all your faces as the realization is setting in. A baby in the house.

“Where is Tengen?” you ask looking around the room. You figured he would have been in here the instant he heard all the commotion.

“He isn’t with you?” Suma asks.

“No…Why?”

“He left right after you did. Aika saw him leave.”

“He wasn’t with me. Do you think he got more orders?” you ask worried.

“I mean he could have. I didn’t see a crow though. And usually he would have said something.” Makio responds.

“True… but I am sure he will show up in no time, the man rarely misses dinner.” Hinatsuru says, patting your back. “Come tell us what the doctor had to say.”

Chapter Text

Dinner came and went with no sign of Tengen. It wasn’t strange that Tengen would be away for nights at a time. The demon slayer Corp was anything but predictable. But Tengen not sending word was very irregular. The hours passed quickly despite his absence. The wives were talking about the potential futures. Would the baby have Tengen or your features or some beautiful mixture of both? Suma was lounging under the kotatsu. Her hands working fast as she drafted simple patterns for baby clothes.

“Y/n what do you think of this design? I think a green lotus fabric would be so cute!”

“Suma that’s adorable. Do you want to go back to the fabric store with me tomorrow? That shopkeeper is going to lose her mind with us.”

“Don’t get too ahead of yourselves. The babe won’t be here for some time.” Aika said from her place next to Hinatsuru. They had been scouring old recipe books. Debating on which things would be the best to make for the ultimate nutrition for mother and baby. Aika had spent many days helping raise others' children but she was just as lit up and excited as the rest of you.

“Which would you prefer? Boy or girl?” Makio asked.

“I mean… I think I am supposed to say as long as it is happy and healthy it doesn’t matter.” You laugh.

“Well… that’s true but I want it to be a little girl!” Makio whined. “Can you imagine a little girl with Tengen’s silver hair? AUH They would be so cute!”

“Lord Uzui had a younger sister with his complexion. She was quite beautiful.” Aika said. The room fell into silence as the gravity of her words sunk in.

“Aika you are just as bad as Tengen with your off the cuff remarks. That is kinda sad” Makio retorts.

“It is sad. Tengen has lost so much.” Hinatsuru adds, smiling sweetly at Makio.

“True, but I hope you are right Makio. A little girl with silver curls.” You say placing your hand on your lower stomach. “This child will be one step in restoring the Uzui clan, to the way it always should have been.”

“But the better question really is… Which one of us is getting knocked up next?” Makio said laughing. The room was suddenly full of laughter as you could always count on Makio to rally the troops. Suma shot up from her relaxed position, her hand raised high.

“I volunteer!”

“Ladies please I beg you, one at a time! This house and my old bones can’t take it.”

***

Tengen had not moved from his place in the tree. His dangling legs had long since gone numb. But he couldn’t find the strength to move. He was still reeling from the revelation he had had that day. He had known something had been different between you both but he had been convincing himself that he was reading too much into his anxieties. He couldn’t help but to try to think back to when something could have changed between you both. There had been a mission a few months back where the demon had targeted young lovers. The monster had managed to tear at your flesh. It had been the closest of calls they had had in a long time. Tengen had blamed himself for that day even though you had assured him you were fine and that it wasn’t his fault.

Could it have been too much for you? Perhaps you had met that man one day in town and his normalcy, his kind nature, and safety had made you question your dangerous life with him. He envisioned you walking into the sweets shop to buy your favorites with Suma and that man whisking you away. Then the thought hit him harder than a demon’s punch. You loved Suma, Makio, and Hinatsuru too. But you were still willing to leave them. Hinatsuru’s tear filled eyes from that morning shocked his brain. They knew. They knew they were losing you too. That was why she looked so sad this morning. Why Makio was whispering with you in the foyer. Why Suma had mentioned the plot of her book. Would they too one day slip from his grasp? Suma had been the only one that had stepped up to agree to marry him. His father had arranged the rest. You had found a way out and the others were keeping your secret from him. Perhaps wishing they could be in your shoes too. Tengen’s shoulders began to shake as his breathing rattled his frame. He was beginning to hyperventilate as his mind tore itself apart.

The sun had set and the night's chill was starting to get to him. He knew he needed to go home. That the wives would begin to worry but he didn’t want to confront you. He didn’t want to have that difficult conversation. A part of him wished that he could have returned to that morning where you had all been laying in each other’s arms in the afterglow of your time together. But his mind was nagging him, convincing him that even those happy times were false. He was trapping you. All of you. And he couldn’t do it anymore.

***

The wives retired alone that night. None of them could say that they were resting well with Tengen’s absence. But with no idea where he could be and with his call to the main estate earlier that day. they all figured he would show up eventually. You couldn’t sleep. Your nerves and excitement had your head running at lightning speeds. When tossing and turning felt futile you decided to go downstairs. You didn’t want to bombard Tengen as soon as he walked in the door but you also didn’t think you could contain yourself any longer.

Sitting in the dark, with only a small candle to keep you company you nursed a cup of tea until it had long gone cold. There was no movement in the house and even the night air seemed to be remarkably quiet. Sitting in front of you was the fabric you bought earlier for Tengen’s Onbuhimo and the letter with your results. You weren’t exactly sure how you were going to tell him. A part of you planned to give him the fabric first, making him guess what the fabric could be furnished as. But honestly Tengen was such a flashy man that you doubted an infant sling would ever cross his mind. But the letter was probably the best bet.

The night was shifting from dark to dawn as the hint of blue began to paint the sky. Soon the horizon would be bathed in glowing pink and orange. Tengen had been wandering the streets for some time. He had thought that distracting himself with a drink would calm his mind. But being surrounded by joyful drunks made his miserable self-feel even worse. He knew he had to go home. There was no point in putting it off any longer. He knew you would come find him eventually and he was certain he would rather have his heart broken in the security of his own home than somewhere on the streets. Reluctantly he walked home. His steps slow and his head bowed.

Aika was the first to rise as she started to prepare for the day. She was startled however, to find you sitting alone in the dining room off the kitchen. When she slid the door open you jumped at the movement. The excitement is clear on your face with the thoughts of Tengen. She smiled sheepishly when she saw your expression fall somewhat.

“He will be back before you know it. Try to calm yourself.” She said sitting next to you at the table and patting your hand gently.

“I am worried. He was talking about a mission yesterday that they discussed at the Hashira meeting. I just hope that I have time to talk with him about it.”

“You will… it may not be the kind of conversation you want to have but you will have it.”

“What do you mean?”

“Demon Slayer missions and babies clearly don’t mix. You may be having a joyful conversation but it will also be a difficult one.” Aika said. “You will have to leave active duty.”

“That is true. I would be lying if I said that didn’t also make me nervous.” You sighed leaning back in your seat. “I am by no means a fighting expert, but the idea of my family being out there fighting while I am here…”

Tengen slipped through the front door silently. Slowly he removed his shoes but lingered at the step. He knew the house would still be asleep but he debated going to your room to wake you. He was conflicted as if he should force the conversation from you. He knew he would get no rest until he did. As he made his way to the staircase voices caught his sharp ears. He followed them though the house until he was standing at the rice paper doors that separated the dining from the sitting room. He couldn’t bring himself to open them. Aika’s voice echoed through him.

“You know you must leave him. You cannot stay by Tengen’s side.”

“Yes I know that. It doesn’t make it any easier though.” You replied. He could hear the sadness in your voice. “Leaving Tengen is the last thing I want to do.”

“You cannot be selfish is this. You must think of those you love, and do what is best for them.”

“It’s just strange. I’ve been with him for so long. I’m not sure what I’ll do on my own.”

“You will manage. You’ve got to think of your new loved one now. You must do what is best for them.” Aika said, patting your stomach lightly. There it was. The final confirmation. Tengen’s heart broke. His breath hitched in his throat as his head began to swim. You were leaving him. And somehow everyone in this house knew about it before him. He backed away from the door quickly, losing his balance as his knee clipped the sitting room's low table. He managed his best to sit on the cushion as he stumbled but it did little to dissolve the loud thud of him hitting the floor. Surrendering to his new position he let his head rest on the table in front of him.

The noise from the sitting room had both you and Aika up and moving quickly. Sliding the door open you were blinded by the utter darkness of the room. However, Tengen’s silver hair managed to catch the light just enough for you to make out his form. Grabbing the candle from the dining table you rushed into the room.

“Aika get some more light for me please! Tengen?” you say as you access his hunched form over the table. Running your hand over his back you lean forward to see his face but it is shielded from your view.  “Tengen are you alright?”

Aika returns with more candles placing them around the table. You use yours to light them quickly. The room is filled with more light. Beneath your fingers you can feel Tengen shaking. His shoulders are tense like a taut bow. But he still has not moved nor said a word. You begin to panic.

“Tengen are you hurt? What is it my love?” you say. He pulls away from your touch as you speak. Confused, you push on his shoulder to force him to turn toward you. You were preparing for blood, some wound to manage. You were not, however, prepared for the fiery gaze that Tengen’s eyes bore into you. It gave you pause. He was angry. And you couldn’t help but feel like this anger was directed at you.

“Love? What’s going on?” you whisper timidly.

“Don’t…” Tengen’s voice is deep and holds a level of threat you had never heard before, not even when confronting demons. You look at Aika with wide eyes, she too has a shocked look on her face.

“Aika… would you please get the lord some tea?” you say.

“Right away…”

“Tengen, what is going on?” you ask again.

“I thought you already knew?” his tone had not changed but his eyes were darting from yours.

“I don’t understand… Did something happen?”

“I heard you! I saw you!” he spits. Tengen is up before he can stop himself leaving you alone on the floor. His body has to move, it has to dispel this energy or he feels like he is going to explode. Tengen begins pacing the room.

“You did?” you say stunned. “Then why didn’t you say anything?”

“You think I want to have this conversation?”

“I don’t understand… I thought you would be hap….”

“You keeping secrets from me does not make me happy. You lying to me does not make me happy! In what world do you think I would be happy about any of this?” Tengen’s voice booms throughout the house.  You can’t keep the hurt from your expression. The excitement you had been holding on to suddenly felt like a weight that was pulling your heart into your stomach.

“Tengen I… I didn’t mean to lie to you. I just wanted to know for sure before I said anything. You can understand that right?”

“You had to plan everything out right? I am sure it was a very tough decision for you.” His tone was bitter as he lashed out. He didn’t know why he was acting this way. He was just so angry all the sudden. Some part of him was determined to shield his wounded heart before you had a chance to crush it further and that meant pushing you away first.

“It has been Tengen” Your hurt is beginning to burn as a fire is being lit in your veins. His anger was fueling your own.  “I don’t understand. I really expected you…

“What?” he interrupts. “What did you expect exactly? For me not to be angry?”

“Well I sure as hell did not expect this reaction!” You yell, you are on your feet too now. You can see the emotions running though his face. Tengen’s eyes betray his anger to reveal the hurt underneath. You just didn’t understand. You knew that this situation was going to be a change to the family but you never in a million years would have thought Tengen would have been so upset. Maybe you had all been wrong. Maybe a family wasn’t what Tengen wanted. He hadn’t ever pushed the subject of ‘heirs’ or the Uzui clan. But maybe that was because he had no intention of continuing it.

“I won’t have you stay here if that’s truly how you feel.” Tengen interjects.

“What do you mean ‘stay here’?

“You’ve got a choice to make and I am not going to persuade you.”

“Why are you making me choose? You are being ridiculous.”

“Ridiculous? It’s ridiculous that you expect me to just accept this.”

“You are going to have to Tengen!” you can’t help but step closer to him, your anger demanding his full attention. Even when standing on your tiptoes your chest barely meets his but you will not back down from this. You don’t care anymore. The hurt you feel is bubbling up and you can feel the burn of tears as it reaches your eyes.

“You can’t have both! You can’t have this family and destroy it at the same time!”

“Destroy it? I am trying to build something here!”

Tengen couldn’t take the pressure anymore. His heart was breaking and you seemed to have little regard to the pain you were causing. Did you think so little of him? Did you find your relationship so surface level that you could cast it aside so easily and expect him to be happy about it?

“You are so selfish.” He says the animosity of his tone shocks you like a splash of ice water.

“Don’t talk to me like that! You sound just like your father!” you bite back. You knew it was a low blow but couldn’t stop the words from falling from your lips. They did their damage as you watched Tengen’s form falter. It was as if your words had drawn the energy out of him. He had had a long day and night and it was all catching up to him.

“You have to choose! You either stay with me or you leave me! Which is it?”

“You know I will choose them! I haven’t even felt them move but I will choose them every time!” you say. When Tengen’s expression falls, so do your tears. Your chest is shaking but you had never felt more certain of something in your entire life. Was that what it was like to feel like a mother? Tengen doesn’t speak. He merely sits back down at the table resting his head in his hands. It’s over. He can’t bring himself to look at you. He knew it deep down it would end this way.

You stand there for a moment. You expected him to speak. To come to some sort of resolution. You couldn’t really fathom him making you choose between your lives as a demon slayer and starting a family. Granted it wasn’t something you had planned either, but it was something you were going to fight for now. Defeated you back away from him. Aika is standing nearby, the cup of tea still in her hand. She too has a crushed look on her face. Grabbing your letter and fabric off the back table you head for the porch. You weren’t sure where you wanted to go, but upstairs to the conversations you weren’t prepared for with your fellow wives, or to the street where prying eyes would invade your weakened state were not an option at the moment. You settled for your favorite spot in the gardens. It would be good enough until you could get your head in order and the sun to fully rise. Glancing over your shoulder you take in Tengen’s overwhelmed form still bent over the table. Sighing deep you walk out into the chilled morning air.

***

The argument downstairs had roused the entire household. The wives upstairs had heard the booming voices. It had been quiet for some time now. Not wishing to invade the obvious tense situation brewing between you they sat in silence. They had been stunned. Of course Tengen got mad. They all did. Hell Makio and Suma fought on a daily basis but they had never heard his voice filled with so much fury. They couldn’t really believe it. They too had thought Tengen would have been excited about the news. As the house became even more still the wives were getting anxious.

Aika knocked quietly on the door before entering. She was met with very expectant eyes as her own still shocked expression greeted them. She sighed deeply before she spoke in low tones filling in the wives on everything that had transpired downstairs.

“Never in all my years would I have thought he would have been angry about this.” She said sadly.

“Where is Y/n now?” Makio says standing as if preparing for battle.

“She is out in the garden. She has to be hurting greatly…” Aika responds by shaking her head in defeat. Hinatsuru stood quickly as she moved for the door. Her eyes were burning a fierce purple as she pulled the door open again with a loud smack as it slid across the frame.

“My lady, what do you plan on doing?” Aika asks.

“I don’t care how Tengen feels about this. He will know that we all support her.” She says before stomping down the hallway. The rest of the room spills out behind her. Trying to keep up with her quick pace as she runs down the stairs. Tengen is still in the sitting room. He was watching the candles slowly melt, their light being replaced with that of the dawn. He didn’t have the resolve to move. Even as the clattering of footsteps came flying down the stairs. The paper door was nearly ripped from its frame as Hinatsuru flung it open. Tengen was shaken by her intense gaze.

“I really can’t believe you right now!” Hinatsuru scolds entering the room to stand over Tengen. Tengen glances up to her overwhelming presence. Hinatsuru is surprised to see how hangered he appears. His usual vibrant eyes are dull and red rimmed. His commanding figure is bent and his shoulders sag as if under some immense pressure.

“You can’t believe me? ME? You all have known about this and chose to keep me in the dark!” The room is slowly filled with the rest of the family. Tengen’s tone is still cruel, confusing his wives even further.

“Tengen it was not our place to say anything. It was her secret, it was her news.” Hinatsuru continues not backing down from her position.

“I thought you would be happy.” Suma interjects, rubbing the backs of her arms to comfort herself.

“Why does everyone keep saying that?” Tengen says, throwing his hands up in defeat.

“Because we all honestly thought you would be” Makio retorts.

“Why would I be happy about this?!” Tengen yells. All three wives share a concerned look.

“I mean… we know you didn’t have a great father but… I really thought you would want to be one.” Suma says her sad tone catching him off guard.

“What?” he said, cocking his head to the side. His mind seemed to be processing the information at half speed because nothing the wives were saying made any sense to him.

“To be a father?” Hinatsuru questions.

“What are you talking about?”

“What are you talking about?” Makio questions back. “Y/n is pregnant. She has been so worried about it all week.”

“WHAT!” Tengen says shocked. Finally finding the strength to bolt upright from the table.

“She wanted to get it confirmed by a doctor first. Just in case. She was worried that she might get your hopes up for nothing… I guess we were wrong about that.”

“She asked us not to say anything! It’s been so hard!!” Suma whined.

“What are you talking about?”

“Seriously what are you talking about?” Makio said again. “I thought you had a fight with y/n about this already? You told her to choose between you and keeping the baby.”

“She confirmed it yesterday with her doctor. She has been so excited to tell you.” Hinatsuru added.

“But she said she was leaving.” Tengen’s head was swimming. What were they talking about? Pregnant? Babies? Him being a father?

“Yes my lord, she will have to leave active duty. She cannot stay at your side fighting while pregnant with your child.” Aika interjects.

“Tengen what exactly did you think was going on?”

“I thought she had met someone else. That she was leaving us for them. I didn’t know…” the picture Tengen had painted in his mind of you with another man was slowly breaking apart as another image was being replaced. All the odd behaviors, the whispers, your anxious heartbeat, all of it. All the pieces were falling together. And suddenly he was filled with so much shame he could hardly stand it.

“Are you crazy?! She adores you! Why on earth would you think that?” Suma yells. All the wives stare at him in disbelief. “She has been losing her mind over this! She was trying so hard not to get excited about it too early but I already have plans for baby clothes… and… and Makio wants it to have silver hair like yours!”

“Suma you are rambling!” Makio says, pushing her shoulder hard.

“You must fix this Tengen. She thinks you rejected her, but more importantly she thinks you rejected the baby.” Hinatsuru says. Tengen is moving before she is finished speaking. Grabbing Aika by her narrow shoulders, his voice is frantic as he speaks.

“Where did she go? Did you see where she went?”

Still taken aback by his sudden movements Akia merely gestured to the back garden. Tengen did not spare the scene a backward glance as he bolted out the back door and over the porch. His bare feet kicked up dust as he ran.

“What a dummy” Makio says, rolling her eyes. “Well… who wants breakfast while they work all that out?”

***

The morning was still chilled even as the sun was bathing the sky in its deep orange. You pulled your legs closer to yourself. Resting your cheek on your folded knees you let the tears you couldn’t seem to stop soak into your yukata. This spot in the garden has always been your favorite. It was secluded as it was sheltered by large Ginkgo trees. The small stream that had been installed snaked its way through the entire garden. The light sounds of the stream distracted you as your mind tried to recover from the morning’s argument

You still couldn’t quite believe it. Your heart was aching at the ways things had turned out. Where could have things gone so wrong. You were so worried about giving Tengen false hope. And now that he was so against this pregnancy it all seemed so pointless. ‘And to think he wanted you to choose!’ you couldn’t fathom it.

You heard Tengen’s foot falls and his ragged breathing behind you. You couldn’t remember the last time you had actually heard the man before you saw him. His training was so ingrained into his being that he startled you often. You didn’t turn to look at him. You were too angry.

“Tengen leave me alone.” You say bitterly.

“Love… please…”

“No. I don’t want to hear anymore. I don’t want to hear your reasoning. Nothing you say is going to change my mind.”

“That man you were with yesterday… Who was he?” Tengen asks timidly. His voice was wavering and you could hear the uncertainty in his tone. You debated answering him but something about the way he was speaking troubled you. Refusing to look his way you answered.

“Haru? He is the son of my doctor, a doctor in training himself. Why?”

“I saw you together and I thought…”

The thud behind you startled you from your sulking. Quickly you turned toward the noise. Tengen was on his knees behind you. His hair blocked his eyes as he seemed to be catching his breath. The ragged breathing vibrated his frame, as the sharp inhales caused you to panic. He looked as if he was recovering from a deep wound.

“Tengen?” you questioned, still too stunned to move. He wasn’t meeting your gaze as his hands braced against his knees.

“Tengen? What’s going on?” you demand. Shifting his eyes ever so slightly to yours you finally see him. You can’t help the stunned look that stains your expression. Tengen’s eyes are filled with tears as they brim and spill over the edges to trail down his cheeks. You are moving before you realize it. In the blink of an eye you knelt down in front of him. Your knees crashing into his. You are pulling his face with your hands to meet his gaze more fully. But he pulls from your grasp to hang his head near your shoulder not quite touching you.

“Tengen tell me what’s going on?” you say panicked. This morning was throwing your emotions for a loop. You were so mad, but seeing your husband so distraught was alarming.

“I’m a fool.” He says through gasping breaths. His eyes still will not meet yours but you watch as the tears continue down his face. He can’t meet your gaze. He imagines the pain in your eyes, the confusion, and he can’t face it.

“What are you talking about?”

“When I saw you yesterday… I thought… I thought you had met someone.”

“Met someone? You mean like SOMEONE someone?” you say confused. It didn’t make sense. What was he talking about? Met someone? Like an affair?

“Yes…”

“You idiot! You see me with a man once and your mind instantly goes to an affair?” you question pushing on his shoulder with every word. “Do you seriously think so little of me?”

“It wasn’t just that!” he says in defense. He is looking you dead in the eyes now. The tears still welling up in his but no longer falling. Holding you gently by the shoulders he stops your pushing. “I felt this distance between us. Then there were the odd behaviors, the secrets with the others, and then yesterday. It’s all my head would let me think about!”

“And you didn’t think to talk to me about it? You just assumed?”

“I thought I was reading too much into it! Everything would be so normal and then something would feel off. Then when I was going to finally question you, you ran off… and the next thing I knew… I saw you in the arms of that man.”

“So you followed me yesterday?”

“Yes… I was worried about you. I can’t really explain it. I know I shouldn’t have but I… “

“What is it Tengen?”

“I just love you so much. I couldn’t bear the thought of letting you go, but at the same time I felt like because of our situation, I couldn’t claim you either.”

“What situation is that?”

“Our arranged marriage.” You couldn’t help the hurt that scared your expression. Instantly tears sprang to your eyes and were rolling down your face. Tengen’s heart ached, this wasn’t what he wanted. He was just trying to explain and here it was causing you pain.

“Is that really all you see us as? An arrangement?”

“No of course not!”

“After all that we have been through… after all this time? You think I could leave you as if it was nothing?”

“No it’s just… I want you to be happy. I want all of you to be happy. Even if that means that I am not a part of it.”

“Don’t be ridiculous!” you yell. Grabbing both sides of Tengen’s face you force his direct eye contact with you. There would be no more confusion. No more hurt. Life is too short for these feelings. There were only a few things you truly wanted in this world and this family was number one.  “I have never once in my life regretted being your wife. Nor would anything bring my happiness more than this family. It hurts my heart that you think so little of me Tengen!”

“I thought you were leaving me.” he says, casting his eyes away from your fierce expression.

“I hate to break it to you but they will be mixing my ashes with yours in the end.” You say wiping his tears from his face with your thumbs as you speak. “And I don’t care what the next life might look like. I will be finding you again. You got that?”

“I just couldn’t get it out of my head that there was someone else. It was eating me alive.”

“Well, my love. There is someone else.” You say as you take his heavy hand in yours. Gently you place it on your stomach. For the first time that morning your heart is fluttering with excitement again. As if still stunned, Tengen moves his hand to lightly grip at your flesh. You watch as his sorrow filled eyes lift and change as the realization truly over takes him. And for the first time in what seemed like ages Tengen’s wide beautiful smile graces his face. You can’t help the tears that well up in your eyes as a wave of relief washes over you. All of this had just been some stupid miscommunication.

“Oh god love, don’t cry. I am so sorry!” Tengen says, pulling you to sit against his thighs.

“I’m sorry too! I should never have tried to keep it a secret! I should have just said something!” you say resting your forehead against his shoulder.

“I understand why you did. I guess these fears of mine. I had been holding on to them for some time.” He said as he brushed your hair from your face. “They would have reared their ugly head at some point. I am only glad I didn’t do more damage.”

“Then you have to promise me. From now on you will voice these fears of yours. And I promise to be more open in the future.” You kiss each of his cheeks, the taste of salt from his tear stained face reminding you of the seriousness of your vow.

“That’s a promise.” You both sit quietly in each other's embrace as the world seems to shift back to the reality you were used to. You were here in the arms of your loving husband and the hurt had been remedied.

“Well I guess it just goes to show you…” you finally say, breaking the silence.

“What?”

“You can’t keep secrets from the Sound Hashira.” You both laugh. Tengen’s deep chuckles vibrates your body and warms your soul.

“So this is really happening?” Tengen asked, pulling away to look at you. His expression is so warm that it causes you to blush.

“Yeah this is really happening. Tengen, I know this wasn’t the plan but I’m really happy. Here…” you stand from his embrace to retrieve your letter and present that had been abandoned. He hated to be parted from you. He wanted the contact, the assurance that you were really here. Shifting to sit on his backside instead of his knees, Tengen rests in the grass as he watches you retrieve the objects. The way the morning light was catching your form and the gentle sway of your hips. He didn’t think he could have been more in love with you. Opening his arms wide he invites you back into his lap as you hand him the letter. Opening it gently. His eyes scan the text. You can’t help but to mimic his expression as the smile appears on his face.

“Positive.” He beams at you, his fuchsia eyes nearly glowing pink. Lifting his hand again he is hesitant to place it on your lower abdomen. Gently you place yours on top of his before making contact with your skin. You feel his heat radiate into you.

“You’re gonna be a great father.” You say. Tengen’s lips are on you quickly. His kiss is harsh but sweet, yet hungry all the same. He is claiming you, pulling you flush against him. He breathes deep through his nose as he refuses to relinquish your mouth. You gasp for air when he finally breaks away, pushing his face against the crook of your neck. He rests there catching his breath, unwilling to break his contact with you.

“What is that?” he asks, gesturing weakly to the tied fabric parcel sitting next to your thigh.

“A gift.” You say. Picking up the bulky fabric you place it between your bodies. Sharing Tengen’s lap with the fabric you begin to untie the linen bow to reveal the red and gold beneath it.

“What is this?” Tengen asks, his eyes sparkling as he takes in the flashy fabric.

“Hopefully an Onbuhimo, if Suma will help me pattern it.” You say unfurling the fabric further to reveal its flower patterns and gold detailing. You can’t help the sweet laugh that comes from your lips as you watch Tengen’s eyes glow.

“That’s a lot of fabric for an infant sling don’t you think?” he says, running his fingers along the fabric’s edge.

“That’s what the shopkeeper said too.” You laugh. Taking the fabric from his hands in one quick motion you swing it around his shoulders. He is startled at the movement but accepts it as you tie the fabric loosely around his chest. “But I think it’s just enough for my husband.”

“For me?” he asks

“Well I couldn’t get the image out of my head of you caring for our sleeping child around in this. Its little tuft of silver hair peeking out. And when they are bigger. The little one tied to your back, giggling as you run from rooftop to rooftop.”

“Our child…” he says smiling.

“Do you like it?”

“Yes. I love it.” He loved you. He marveled at the insanity that were emotions. Not two hours earlier his entire world had felt like it was falling apart. And now he didn’t think his heart could hold anymore love for you. “It’s very flashy.”

Pulling the fabric tighter around his chest you used it as a grip to pull yourself up to Tengen’s lips. You kissed him softly. Showering soft kisses along his jaw and lips. Tengen caught your face in one of his large hands, keeping you still as he returned your kisses before claiming your mouth again. Tengen’s other hand meandered its way to the small of your back before pulling you flush against him again. You revealed it at the contact. You didn’t know why you needed it so but the connection felt right. Tengen’s tongue graced your bottom lip as you opened your mouth for him. He overtook you, nearly bending you backward as he kissed you, claimed you.

Whatever gaps that had been present, physically, emotionally, or even imaginary; Tengen was determined to fill them. He was pouring all his love for you into every kiss, every touch of his hands. Snaking your arms over his shoulders you buried your hands in his hair as you wrapped your legs more firmly around his waist. Sitting perfectly in his lap you pulled yourself flush against him leaving no space between you. You were squeezing him and soon his arms wrapped around you too. Pulling you into a tight hug. You could barely breathe from it all. The kiss and embrace made your head swim, but you refused to stop. You couldn’t. You were being overtaken by something feral that was laying claim to your husband.

Tengen felt the shift in you. As if a furnace had been lit. You were burning up and your hips had started to move against him. Pulling the fabric from around his shoulders he was surprised at how much heat had built up between you and just how chilly the morning air still was. Casting the fabric behind you as best he could, the bright red contrasted sharply against the green grass. You had not budged from your hold on him despite his movements. You began to kiss down his throat, sucking sharply on his pulse point. Tengen groaned at your ministrations.

Tengen’s hands found your hips pulling you down against his growing erection. It seemed to be the relief you both needed as you both groaned at the contact. Using his considerable strength Tengen held your hips as he lowered you backward to rest against the fabric. It felt cool against your flushed skin but was soon forgotten as Tengen rested his weight between your thighs. It always felt so comforting to have his weight on you.

Tengen kissed at your jaw and then down your neck, setting your skin on fire. You wanted more. You find his belt and quickly begin to work on getting it loose. Tengen’s hands also fumble for your obi. You made quick work of the buttons along the front of his uniform before you began to push it down his shoulders. Tengen is surprised at how quickly you are exposing him to the morning air. Helping you push the fabric off his arms he casts his shirt aside. You waste little time. Leaning upward you place kisses along his chest before taking one of his nipples between your teeth. Tengen hisses as you bite gently, grinding his hips against you as you do. You hum against his skin in encouragement.

Tengen is finally able to get your obi united as he makes quick work to expose your skin to him. Your skin is flush and the chilled air scatters you with chills. Tengen’s hands are rough as he rubs them up your sides before letting his thumbs tease the underside of your breasts. Your breath catches in your throat as you bite your lip in anticipation. Not wishing to interrupt your exploration of his body, Tengen's hand does the work he wished his mouth was doing. Taking your breast in his large hand he pinches your nipple between his fingertips. You gasp as his other hand grips your neck, pushing down against your collar bone in that sensual pressure. You grind yourself against him again, frustrated that his uniform is still in the way.

“Tengen I want to feel you.” You whine. Obliging your request Tengen reluctantly leaves your grasp to relieve himself from the rest of his clothes. Taking his golden bands off as well. Leaving him blissfully bare and beautiful before you. You couldn’t keep your eyes from admiring his form as you scanned his body from head to toe. The orange and pink morning light casting shadows over his muscles. The light catching his silver hair beneath his belly button that led to his blushed groin. His hard cock twitched as he watched you gaze at him, admiring what you saw.

Returning to the fabric, Tengen sat on his knees as he appreciated your naked form, before grabbing hold of your ankle and pulling toward him. The gesture was feral and reminded you of just how strong your husband truly was. He pulled your ankle to his lips as he kissed the delicate joint. Biting your finger to silence your moans you watched as he trailed his kisses further down. Slowly over your calf, the back of your knee, and finally to your inner thigh. You shivered at the anticipation of what came next, but Tengen was cruel. Kissing one thigh he moved to the other and then proceeded to start kissing back up your other leg.

“Tengen... please” you whine.

“What is it love? Did you want something?” he teased.

“You know what I want.”

“Then say it, love.” He says smiling as he kisses your calf again.

“I want to cum on your tongue Tengen!” His soft laugh is his only response before he begins kissing back down your leg. The grass tickles his thighs as he lowers himself to lay between your legs. He can feel you shivering beneath his grip. His strong hands push your thighs open wide. You can feel his hot breath as his tongue drags over your cunt before he sucks your clit into his mouth. You can’t help but buck your hips against him as your fingers dig into the earth beneath you. Tengen knows you like his favorite book as he quickly finds the rhythm that has your pulse racing. Using two of his long fingers he probes at your entrance.  You are already so wet for him as he slowly sinks his fingers into you. You gasp as he stretches you, your walls already fluttering around his fingers.

Tengen hums into your flesh the vibration sending a shock wave through you. You were already so sensitive and he had barely started. As his name falls from your lips his fingers increase their pace. Pushing upward until they hit that spongy tissue that has you moaning. All the while his tongue hasn’t stopped its assault on your clit. Tengen was taking turns between running his tongue in quick circles around your clit and then sucking it hard into his mouth. It was bringing you close to orgasm fast. You buried your dirt covered fingers into his hair as you encouraged him on. Tengen could feel your cunt begin to tighten as your voice was ringing out into the morning air. He was thankful that they didn’t have close neighbors.

“Tengen! Yes! Tengen I’m close!” you moan. The building pressure at your core was almost too much before it blissfully burst into waves of pleasure. Your orgasm hit you hard as you grasped Tengen’s hair firmly, and if it hadn’t been for his strong arms your thighs would have been crushing him. He rode out your orgasm by pumping his fingers into you as your walls sucked him in. He didn’t let up until he felt you relax beneath him, as you caught your breath. You smile weakly as he pulls himself up to lay over you. Kissing you deeply with his slick covered lips. You push against his shoulder lightly.

“Lie back Tengen.” He does as you command, as you ghost his movements. You meet his fuchsia gaze with hungry eyes as he watches you snake your body down his torso to rest on his thighs. Your hands brace his hips before you brush your hair behind your shoulder. Your nimble fingers grip the base of his cock before giving him an agonizingly slow pump. His precum leaking from the tip as you run your thumb over it. Tengen’s hips jump upward and you tsch at his movement.

“Stay still for me my lord.” You tease. Tengen groans as you kiss the underside of his cock, before running your tongue along the head. You can feel his muscles tensing beneath you. You can’t help but to meet his eyes as you take him fully within your mouth. Tengen moans your name as his head falls back to rest against the cold ground. You take as much of him as you can, sucking hard as you work the rest of his large cock with your hand. You can’t quite describe the taste of him but you enjoy it; and the power you hold in these moments was one of your biggest turn-ons. You can feel your arousal drip between your thighs. Tengen can feel himself edging closer with every swipe of your tongue against his cock head.

“Love, if you keep this up I am going to cum in no time.” He says, a sharp moan escaping his lips as you suck him deep into your throat before releasing him with a loud pop. You smile up at him as you lick the saliva and precum from your lips. You decide you don’t want to wait anymore, your pussy is aching and you want him buried deep inside you. You crawl up his stomach before bracing your hands against his chest. Shifting your hip to rest against his hot cock you slide yourself against him, bathing his flesh in your slick, his cock hitting your clit with each pass. Reaching between your bodies you take him in hand lining him up with your entrance as you sink slowly down. Even though you were ready and have had him many times, you still gasp as his tip slips inside you. The stretch feels amazing.

“Wait… Wait! We can’t do this!” Tengen says gripping your hips in his strong hands. You freeze instantly to stare at him wide eyed.

“What? Why?” you breathe.

“What about the baby?” You can’t help the laugh that bursts from your lips. It is such a joyful laugh that Tengen can’t help but love it, even if it is directed at him. “What? What’s so funny?” You kiss him all over his face, the last on his nose before speaking.

“I love you so much” you say with a smile. “It’s just… I thought the same thing!” you continued laughing again. You feel Tengen relax against you again.

“That night in your room? Was that what that was?” he asks amused.

“Yes!” you laugh again burying your face in his shoulder. “I was so worried. But it’s fine. It won’t hurt the baby. I checked with the doctor.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes Tengen I’m sure.” He relinquishes his grip on your hips and sighs as you relax again, once again bracing your hands against his chest as you begin to lower yourself on him again. Tengen groans as you take him inch by inch, your pussy is gripping him so tightly as you lightly rock your hips to get used to the size of him. He has to resist the urge to buck up into you, to close the distance and bury himself balls deep within you. You gasp when you finally seat yourself fully on him. He fills you so deeply. You can feel Tengen’s restraint beneath you as you adjust to him as his thighs gently tremble.

“God my love, you are so tight.” He says through quivering breaths. You hum your approval as you lift yourself up before snapping your hips back down against his. Tengen’s hands quickly find your hips as he guides you up before you grind back down against him. At this angle you are able to bounce on his cock as your clit grazes against his pelvis.

“Tengen you feel so good!” you moan, rocking your hips more earnestly against him. His cock is hitting you so deeply as it drags against your g-spot with every thrust. You’re embarrassed with how quickly you are being brought to the precipice of another orgasm. Your core is tightening again as your muscles begin to tremble. The heat in your veins burns through you as your rhythm falters and your desperate hips jerk against him. Tengen watches as your cheeks flush pink, enhanced by the pink morning light. You are such a sight above him. The way your breast bounce as you move, and your hair cascades in the breeze. The way you are contrasted so sharply against the bright green Gingko leaves. You are so beautiful to him. His beautiful wife. The beautiful mother of his soon to be children. His hips thrust upward involuntary, some primal part of him wanting to claim you. It is all you need. Suddenly you are cumming without warning as you moan Tengen’s name over and over. The heated explosion of your climax flutters around Tengen’s cock and he can’t take it anymore.

Gripping your hips firmly, Tengen flips your position. You are stunned by the change but don’t have long to recover before Tengen is pounding into you. His pace is feral as his cock pounds into your drenched pussy. He pulls your hips upward as he bends your legs toward your head. His hips snap against you as the lewd sounds of your flesh slapping flesh fills the garden. You brace your hands against his shoulders, as your nails bite into his flesh with each thrust. You can fill your body building up again. That tight coil forming at your core as Tengen’s pace is relentless.

“Tengen! You’re so deep!” you chant, your words act as encouragement as Tengen increases his pace. He leans forward, nearly crushing your legs against your chest as he claims your lips. The kiss is sloppy as his tongue delves into your mouth.

“Love, I am going to cum.” He whispers as his hips begin to snap in an uneven rhythm, chasing the release he so desperately needed.

“Inside Tengen. Fill me up.” You begged. He thrusts a few more times before his hips snap against you. The groan that comes from Tengen’s lips as he buries himself deep inside you is wild. Tengen’s cock pulses as he pumps you full. His hot cum painting your insides. You can’t help but to climax again. The combination of his desperate moans and the way he was still filling you up sent you over the edge again. Tengen moaned as he felt your throbbing muscles grip his sensitive cock, but he was determined to stay buried deep inside you. Filling you with every last drop of his cum as you milked him.

Tengen let your thighs go as you both shifted to a more comfortable position. You both groaned as Tengen slowly pulled himself from you. You could feel as globs of his climax leaked from you as it coated your inner thighs. Tengen laid his head on your chest as you both tried to catch your breath. He wrapped his long arms around you as he held you in the afterglow. Everything felt so right again. You were so close to him, you loved him, and you weren’t going anywhere.

The morning breeze picked up through the trees and cooled your sweat slick bodies. Tengen felt the chill run through you. Lifting up his head to look at you, he chuckled as he swiped the hair from your face before peppering you with kisses. He was hunched over you now filling your vision with nothing but his tone body.

“Let’s get you inside before the mother of my children catches a cold.” He says, gathering you up in his arms. Grabbing the Onbuhimo fabric he drapes it around your naked body, the irony of swaddling you in it not lost on you.

“I love you Tengen.”

“I love you too.” He says kissing you as he walks you both back to the house. You can’t stop the laugh that leaves you as you hear Aika’s protests at Tengen’s unashamed nudity. ‘Yes,’ you told yourself ‘everything is right again.’

***

The day had finally come. The crow had flown in with orders the day before and reluctantly you had helped pack. It felt so strange to be preparing for a departure that you are not a part of. You couldn't help the sad glances you gave your family. Tengen had been especially attentive to you. His hands and lips find you often. He always found a moment during every chore to lean in behind you resting his face on your shoulder as he pulled you tight against him. He would inhale deep your scent before kissing your neck. He would hold you for some time before letting you continue. You helped Makio prep all the weapons, and Suma the clothes. Lastly you were with Hinatsuru in the kitchen helping pack lunches for the journey and your last meal together for some time. The steam was rising from the stove in waves as it bathed you in delicious smells. You had noticed your appetite had increased but was grateful no morning sickness had followed.

"You promise to eat well while we are away right." Hinatsuru said.

"Oh course! But with my cooking I can make no guarantees that it will be edible." you laugh. Tengen's silent arms wrap around you as you speak.

"We can't have that" he says, kissing the top of your head.

"Aika and I will manage." You reassure him by patting his arm. "It will not be as good as Hinatsuru's amazing cooking, but it will keep us all alive."

"I expect to see you've plumped out by the time we get back." he said with a deep chuckle.

"I truly hope we are not away for that long." Hinatsuru says with a sigh. Her eyes are distant as she distracts herself from the tears that are building. Tengen doesn't miss a beat as he pulls her into his chest; kissing her on either cheek to brighten her mood.

"We will be back before we know it, my darling." he reassures her. You knew he said that with a hope. Missions sometimes took months. The next time they all saw you, you could very easily be very plump. Akia entered the kitchen, clearing her throat before she spoke.

"You have guests at the entry for you.'' Confused, you look at Tengen and Hinatsuru.

"For me?"

"And the lord." She nods.

Confused, both you and Tengen wander to the foyer. You are surprised when you see the small frame of your doctor and the sweeping frame of Haru at his side. They both smile as you come into view, bowing low in unison. Tengen can't help how his heart skips a beat when he sees the young man. He knows that it was all a mistake but after all the hell he put himself through, the sight of him has his defenses up. Sensing the sudden tenseness in the air, you snake your arm around Tengen's bicep as reassurance. At the feel of your touch the breath he had been holding dissipates.

"Doctor, what a surprise. What brings you all the way here?" You ask bowing back in greeting. "It isn't bad news I hope."

"Not at all my dear. Aika sent us a message about the coming departures." He says with a gentle smile. "Since we did not have a chance to introduce ourselves to Lord Uzui, I thought it best before he leaves."

“Ah yes, you have been taking care of my beautiful bride.” Tengen says. You couldn’t help the smile that crept across your face. Tengen was standing at his full height with all his Hashira energy oozing out of him. You couldn’t help but to compare him to a peacock boasting its feathers.

“I will do my very best too. I promise to keep a good eye on her and the babe whilst you are away.” The doctor says not at all fazed by Tengen’s energy. “My son Haru will also keep a close eye out.”

“I am sure he would like to” Tengen says, staring daggers at the confused young man. Haru bows again but does not dare speak. He can feel the fire rolling off Tengen in waves, even if he isn’t sure why. You cut in between them.

“Doctor, Haru. It was so kind of you to come all this way but we still have so much to prepare before they leave tomorrow. I am sorry I can’t invite you to stay.” You interject, bowing your apology.

“Not at all my dear! We have made our introductions and will be headed out. Another call to make after this one.” He replies with a sweet smile. You and Tengen slip on your sandals as you lead them both through the front garden. Saying your goodbyes at the gate.

"Hey! Haru is it?" Tengen calls after him. The gentle and sweet Haru turns to give him his full attention.

"Yes? Lord Uzui?" His voice is timid, but kind. Tengen absolutely hates the sound of it.

"Keep in mind that I am a shinobi. I am very skilled in the art of torture" He says with a wide grin. Haru, oblivious to the cause of such a statement, pails as he glances at you. You swiftly elbow your husband in his side, causing him to grunt in pain.

"Ignore him Haru, he jests." you say giving the young man an apologetic smile before turning to stare at Tengen in disapproval. The doctor merely laughs as he waddles down the street.

***

That night you bathed in the attention of your family. All of you knowing that it would be some time before you would see each other again. The dinner seemed too short, the family bath not quite as warm, and Tengen’s room felt too final. As the night had crept on you found yourself in your own bed, a bed you would have to get used to without Tengen’s warmth. Fortunately, tonight you had him. Tengen’s arms held you tight as his breathing calms your nerves. His hand had found its new resting place on your stomach as rubbed gentle circles in his sleep. You relished his scent, his heat, the feel of him. You tried to memorize the way he felt against you. This would be the first time you would truly be without him since you were married. It would also be the first time you were alone since you joined your union of five. You told yourself to not be sad. That the sorrow would make the time lag on.

Before you knew it morning had come and with it the goodbyes you weren’t prepared for. You stood next to Aika in the foyer as your family put on their shoes. Their casual clothes were replaced with the uniforms you were used to seeing. It was silent for a moment when everything was ready.

“Well, my love, this is goodbye for now.” Tengen says reaching for your hand. You can’t help the tears that spring to your eyes. Seeing your hurt expression Tengen pulls you into a tight hug. Lifting you high off the ground as he breathed in your scent. “No tears my love, or you will have me weeping along with you.”

“I can’t help it! I am going to worry and miss you all too much!”

“Well you can’t do that!” Makio interjects, her own eyes filled with tears. “It won’t be good for the baby!”

“I know!” you whine.

“I will miss you too y/n!” Suma interjects, hugging you around Tengen’s grasp.

“We will all miss you.” Hinatsuru assures. Tengen reluctantly places you back on the foyer floor. Breathing deep you dry your tears before you kiss each of your fellow wives goodbye. Turning to Tengen once more you stand on your tiptoes to press your lips against his. Pulling you flush against him Tengen kisses you passionately, taking your breath from you. You were thankful that it didn’t feel like a goodbye, it was too full, it felt like the beginning of something. Breaking away you adjust your clothes before smiling fondly at your family.

“Safe travels my dearests.” You say trying to keep the sadness from your smile.

“You take care. If anything happens send word by crow.” Tengen replies.

“Of course.”

“I mean, a mission in the entertainment district sounds pretty exciting.” Suma says as she opens the front door.

“It is sure to be flashy, that's for sure!” Tengen laughs. The wives file out one by one. Leaving Tengen behind. He was staring at you. He was memorizing the details of your face, the way you were smiling, and the curve of your body. Placing his hand on the top of your head he patted you fondly before turning. He would not show you the tears that were in his eyes. His blades strapped to his back and the bold ‘Destory’ cutting his figure.

“See you soon my beloved.”

Chapter Text

Tengen bolted upward in bed. The sheets stuck to his sweat drenched skin and his breathing was ragged to his ears. It was the same dream he had been having for weeks. Hinatsuru’s cries as Gyutaro grabbed her face. The sickening feeling that overtook him at the thought of being unable to reach her. The pain that still radiated up his arm from his phantom limb. He still found himself reaching for things as if his hand was still there.

His heart wouldn’t seem to still. It continued to race as his mind didn’t seem to process that he was safe at home in bed in the cares of his family. The panic sunk deep into his body and even though he knew it was fine he had to move. He had to dispel this energy lest he lose his mind. Gently he lifted Suma’s sleeping head from his thigh and laid her on the futon. He didn’t bother to find a shirt, instead needing the fresh air to relieve the stickiness of his skin. Creeping downstairs he did his best to not wake the household as he slipped out the backdoor. He was thankful for the cool fall evening. The crisp air filled his lungs and instantly started to take his mind off his racing heart.

Tengen did a lap around the garden. The moonlight casting long shadows and painting the leaves in deep shades of blue. He felt better. His anxious energy was displaced, but he still couldn’t bring himself to go back inside. He would have been lying if he said he wasn’t nervous to close his eyes again. The fear that the images from that night would come flooding back lingered in his mind. Sighing deep he rested his back against one of the pillars on the back porch. The chill had settled into his skin and he wrapped his arms around his chest.

Makio shifted in your bed. She had been rubbing your back to help you fall asleep and had drifted off herself. Everyone had been so attentive to you when you all had finally returned home. You had all spent weeks at the butterfly mansion as Tengen and Hinatsuru had been recovering. Shinobu had insisted that you stay as well. She was worried the stress would have affected your pregnancy. However, all had returned to some sort of normal, and the family left together.

Tengen was so sweet. You had nearly torn the door from the frame as you were trying to get to him. Tears were staining your face as you took in the sight of him bandaged and broken. And yet the man only had the widest of smiles plastered across his face.

“Oh my love, you are so beautiful” Tengen chanted over and over as you clung to him, nearly laying in his hospital bed with him. He had kissed your tears away as you shook in his arms.

You had been worried as the months had passed. Tengen and the wives had been sending you updates about the mission but there hadn’t seemed an end in sight. Haru and Aika had been looking after you. But as your belly had grown without your loved ones present; you couldn’t help but be a little sad. Aika had felt the first kicks, and held your hair when morning sickness had reared its ugly head. Haru had taken your stomach measurements and made speculations about the gender. All things that you wished you had been doing with your family.

Now that you were heavily pregnant it was difficult to sleep through the night. You shifted uncomfortably as the baby sat against your bladder. In the last week you had been sleeping on your own to keep from disturbing your partners. However, every night you had found someone resting with you. Leaving the warmth of your bed was the last thing you wanted to do but clearly your child didn’t want you to rest. Sighing deep you swing your legs for leverage to help you up.

You waddled your way to the kitchen. Preparing to make yourself a hot cup of tea. The moon pouring into the dining room caused you to pause. The door was open to the back porch. It would have been strange for someone to just leave it open. Peeking out through a crack in the rice paper you were surprised to see Tengen sitting in the cold. His eyes were closed but he didn’t look like he was resting well. Slipping out the door you were chilled instantly by the night air.

“Tengen, love? What are you doing out here?” You ask as you reach for his head, running your fingers through his loose hair. He was startled at the touch. Grabbing your hand gently.

“Love! You need to go back inside! It’s too cold.” He said worried.

“It is too cold for you as well.” You say as you sit down next to him. “What are you doing out here so late?”

“I couldn’t sleep.” The seriousness in Tengen’s tone gave you pause. His hand had absent-mindedly begun to rub your back, bringing you closer to his side. Laying your head against his chest you let the strong rhythm of his heart fill your ears.

“Tengen, what is troubling you?”

“I.. well… I can’t seem to help but dream about that night.” Tengen admits before thumping his head against the pillar behind him. His gentle punishment for letting his anxieties overcome him. Your heart was breaking for him. You could only imagine how terrifying that night had been. And the family had not come out of that terror unscathed. All of them had mental or physical scars that lingered.

“I am sorry my love.”

“I just feel so…” Tengen started but refused to finish. He shifted beside you averting his gaze from yours. You knew you couldn’t let him pull away from you. You didn’t want him to have to deal with this on his own. He had always been there for you, you had to do the same for him. Pulling yourself up you stood on your knees. You were eye to eye with Tengen as you nestled yourself between his legs. You placed both your hands on his shoulders. Your very round belly pushed against his toned one. He met your gaze with reluctant eyes. You could see the sadness they held. Your brows knitted together as you saw his pain.

“How do you feel, Tengen?” you say rubbing his cheek with your thumb. His strong arms pull you flush against him as his legs cage you in. Burying his face deep in your neck. He inhales your scent. His warm breath tickles your skin. You relax against him, letting his strong arms pull your legs on either side of his hips. You ease yourself down against his thighs. You are both still for a moment before Tengen can find his voice.

“I just feel so weak.” He whispers against your skin. He pulls you in closer to him. You relish his warmth in the cold night air as chill bumps rise to your skin.

“What? Without you, none of us would…”

“Love, it could have so easily gone the other way. We could have lost so much.”

“Tengen we can’t focus on what if… or could have been.”

“Then let’s focus on what is…” He says lifting his wounded arm up as evidence. “How am I supposed to hold our child properly?”

“Don’t be silly.” You say raising your brow as you speak. Tengen is searching your eyes as if trying to discover a lie.

“I am serious love.” Concern dripped from his voice.

“And so am I.” You say firmly. “You are worried about that but you are holding me right now.”

“It’s different.” Tengen says defeated.

“It really isn’t. All I see before me is the man that I love, the best husband any wife could ask for, and the father of my children.”

Tengen’s shoulders tremble beneath your grasp. You know he is hurting and one conversation isn’t going to fix it, but you want him to be alright. You rest your cheek against his shoulder as you let the silence overtake you both again. You sit in his embrace for some time, you are just so thankful to have him here with you now. You tell yourself, Muzan himself could not take your husband from you now. You breathe him in and sigh against him. The night breeze rips through the trees and the cool air bites at your skin.

“Love you’re getting cold.” Tengen whispers, feeling you shake lightly against him.

“Then warm me up.” You say squeezing your legs against his waist. He is surprised by your forwardness but doesn’t waste his time. Tengen’s lips find yours as he kisses you firmly. All of his kisses since he had returned had carried this same sense of urgency and possessiveness. Biting gently at your lower lip you open your mouth to him. His tongue makes quick work to dominate yours. His hand buries itself in your hair as he pulls your head back, opening you up more to him.

His mouth trails across your jaw before soft bites begin to bruise down your neck. His possessiveness sets your blood on fire. You can feel how wet you have already become as your hips begin to rock against him. In this position you can do little to alleviate the tension building up within you, as your belly leaves you little room to move. Using your hands you pull up your yukata over your thighs, shivering as the night air cools your ass and stings your dripping cunt.

Tengen can feel your frustrations. Lifting his hips upward he thrusts his growing erection against your core. You can’t help but to gasp his name. He lets go of you to pull himself from his pants as he lines himself up at your entrance. Things were moving so fast tonight but that didn’t stop Tengen from demanding your attention.

“Look at me love.” He commanded. You snapped your eyes open to stare into his fuchsia ones. His eye shone with so much heat as he slowly thrust up into you. Your breathing hitched in your throat as you focused on keeping eye contact. The head of his cock was stretching you open and inch by inch he buried himself within you. Your body trembled around him.

“Tengen please, fuck me love!” you begged. At the sound of your desperate voice all control he once had vanished. He thrust up into you with little restraint. His hips snapping into yours with such force he nearly pulled out as you bolted upward. You moaned as he continued his pace having little ability to do more than hang on to his shoulders. His cock was hitting you so deep. Each thrust grazing your g-spot as his hips ground against your clit. Despite the cold your body was drenched and your thighs were quivering on either side of Tengen’s waist.

You could feel yourself getting close as the tightness of your core coiled tighter and tighter with each thrust. Tengen was resting his head against your shoulder as his hips started to lose their rhythm. His breathing ragged. You buried your hands in his hair as you pulled him more firmly against you. Knowing you held him so tightly Tengen let his hand drift from your hip, this thumb finding your clit as he made quick circles. He knew he wouldn’t last much longer and wanted to feel you cum on his cock.

Tengen’s attentions on your clit had you climax before you could brace for it. A jolt traveled up your spine as you clamped down on his hot cock. The pulsing of your cunt was all he needed as Tengen spilled himself inside you. You moaned as the throb of his cumming cock twitched within you filling you up. You rocked your hips gently against him, draining him as he finally stilled beneath you. The world was rapidly turning cool again as you both came down off your highs.

You continued to hold on to him even as he softened inside you and your legs ached. Tengen’s hand had begun to rub your belly. Making small movements with his thumb. As the world was stilling again and your heart returned to its normal cadence you felt the baby turn within you. Looking down at your stomach you noticed Tengen’s hand had stopped. He laid the flat of his palm against you. His hand was so large it nearly covered half your stomach. You couldn’t help the smile that came to your face as his wonder filled eyes locked with yours.

You both were very still for a moment. Waiting. Then with a fierce kick you felt your body jolt as the baby kicked against Tengen’s palm. Tengen’s face lit up and a smile you hadn’t seen for some time stretched across his face. It warmed your very soul to see him so happy.

“Did you feel that?” he asked with a blush painting his cheeks as his fascinated eyes traveled back to your stomach. You merely nodded, not wishing to admit that you felt like the child was going to break your rib.

“We woke the baby.” You laughed. The wind blew again through the trees and you couldn’t help the shiver that ran up your spine causing your whole body to shake. Tengen’s brows furrowed as he seemed to remember something very important. Lifting your hands in his he kissed them before placing one of either side of his neck in a silent order to hang on. Shifting again he hooked his arm under your knees and used his hand to brace your back. He had you in his arms bridal style before you could blink. Standing with little effort.

“Maybe you were right.” He admitted as he walked you both back into the warmth of the house. “I have you in my arms just fine.” You smiled sweetly at him before you began to pepper his face with kisses.

“Lets get you back to bed.” He whispers between kisses.

“You are going to have to share it with Makio.”

“Maybe I can get her to rub my back too.” Tengen jokes.

“Fat chance.”

Chapter Text

Epilogue Part II:

The morning had started like any other. Training continued in the back garden with the energetic Makio. Suma had slept through breakfast, and now the entire family was lounging in the sitting room. Suma was folding paper cranes, while Hinatsuru was making shopping lists, and Makio was enchanted by her book. Tengen was wrapped up in making the muscle mice do pushups in a line along the floor. And you were miserable. The last two weeks had been long and tiring. You were so heavily pregnant that doing any task was a major event. You could no longer see your feet and your body ached constantly. What little sleep you managed was only due to the constant efforts of your family to make you comfortable. You seriously wondered how any woman could do this without the support system you had. The Demon Slayer Corp should be recruiting these strong women you thought.

Shifting on your cushion you tried to focus on the book in your hand but the weight on your hips was sore. You were resigning yourself to just staying in bed for the day. Maybe a nap would help alleviate the pressure you felt. Sighing deep you began to rock slightly to gain the momentum to boost yourself off the floor. Tengen noticing your movements was fast to help. He moved behind you as he helped guide you to your feet. You swayed for a moment, feeling off. Tengen was quick to steady you. You couldn't help the tired sigh that escaped you as you braced your hands on your lower back.

"I'm going to go lay down."

"Do you need anything?" Tengen asks as he relinquished his grip on your shoulders.

“No, I can’t seem to get comfortable is all.” You reassure him. Since the family had been back from their mission, they had all been catching up on the milestones they had missed out on. Tengen had made a point to go to every doctor’s and midwife meeting. Haru had grown pale at the sight of his large frame in the doorway of the doctor’s house for the first time. If Tengen had been intimidating before, the sight of him now was even more so. A bandaged arm and missing eye made all the rumors about the Uzui shinobi even more believable. And for some unknown reason Haru felt like Mr. Uzui didn’t quite like him.

The midwives were equally as concerned and confused. When the whole family had turned up for your meeting, the old women had stood in shock when you had explained that Suma, Makio, and Hinatsuru were in fact all your partners and would be present at the birth. Tengen had been swiftly turned away at the door, and unlike Haru, these women did not have any problem forcing the 6’6” man to sit on the bench outside. Men were not allowed in the birthing room and doctors were only given access when a problem would arise.

You were happy that you could have these moments with them all. As the months had passed and their mission had continued; you had feared that you would be doing all of this alone; and that the family would have been greeted with a child instead of a round belly. It being the first child to be born made it a journey of firsts. Akia had explained all that she knew of childbirth but it was still daunting all the same. A countless number of new things you had been learning. However, now that the family was back you didn’t have to carry it alone.

Leaving the sitting room, you waddled down the hall toward the stairs that led to your bed chambers. You were shocked at how difficult simple tasks had become and that even walking up the stairs would leave you breathless. Sighing deep, you prepared for the trek up. You took each stair with care, finding your footing firmly before the next. Still the off feeling from earlier persisted. Pain shot up your spine that took your breath away and you had to grip the railing to steady yourself.

The pain started low and then wrapped around towards your stomach. Something was definitely off. Taking a shaking breath the pain finally subsided. Swaying slightly on the steps you turned slowly to go back down. The doctor had assured you that you weren’t due for several weeks, but this was different from any aches and pains you had experienced before. Just as your feet hit the bottom step another wave of pain rocked through you. You hummed deep as you shut your eyes to the rolling discomfort, lowering yourself to sit on the bottom step.

You held your breath until the pain subsided, letting it out with a sigh of relief. You didn’t want to alarm the family over what could have been a false alarm. You had been told by the midwives that false labor was common with first pregnancies. Until things seemed to be moving in a consistent rhythm, not to worry. So, you waited. You couldn’t help the shallow breaths and the hyperfocus you had on your body. Things had been sore for weeks, but you were trying to focus on the new aches. Then like rolling thunder the same pain struck you low again.

You rocked slightly with the pain as you held your breath. The cramping was so forceful that you wondered if it would ever let up. You had begun to sweat, and your yukata felt too tight. Your body seemed torn between wanting to sit still through the contraction and walking around to alleviate the pain. You couldn’t help the whimper that escaped your lips.

“Tengen…” you called softly. In most households your voice would have been too light to be heard, but to the Retired Sound Hashira your plea was a yell. Tengen jumped at the sound of your voice. Nearly trampling two muscle mice in his efforts to bolt from the sitting room. The rest of the wives were left confused by his sudden exit but were used to his sudden disappearance. He had heard the pain in your voice. Finding you quickly at the bottom of the stairs, he slid on his knees before you. His arm braced your side, while his hand moved your hair from your face.

“What is it, love?”

“I think it’s the baby.” You say on a shaking breath. You let your hands rest on Tengen’s shoulders as the wave of pain finally subsides.

“It’s too soon, isn’t it?”

“Yes, but this doesn’t feel like normal aches and pains. I think this child has its own time schedule.”

“Strong and stubborn by the sounds of it… like someone I know.” Tengen jokes.

“Their father? Yes, I believe you are right about that.” Tengen’s chuckle calms you; and you take your first deep breath since you descended the stairs. Peace was restored to the hallway.

“Should I fetch the midwife?” He asks as he rubs his thumb along your arm resting his grip on your elbow. His fuchsia eyes betray his even voice as they frantically searched your own. You couldn’t help the crooked grin that appeared on your face. You couldn’t blame him for being nervous, you were too. Demon slayers… yes, trained shinobi… of course, wise in the ways of death and destruction three lifetimes over… definitely, but parents? Suddenly you both seemed impossibly young.

“I’m not sure, they said that I could have a false labor. We shouldn’t be concerned until it has a rhythm to it.”

“Rhythms are my specialty, but I can’t help but be concerned.”

“I feel the same.” You admit sighing deeply. Your body had seemed to settle. No new waves of pain, just the sound of your nervous heartbeat. But you still didn’t move from your step. Tengen had eased himself down to sit in front of you, bracing his hand atop your knee. Silence fell in the hallway as you both sat waiting for something to change. You couldn’t help but ring your fingers through your husband's silver hair, it was getting so long, and he was wearing it down more in his retirement. Tengen relished your touch, easing his head into your open palm.

A knock interrupted your quiet followed swiftly by the front bell ringing frantically as it was pulled with tenacious force. Both of you and your husband merely looked in its direction confused as it continued to ring. The door to the sitting room slid open as all three wives peaked around the corner and down the hallway, their expressions a plaster of confusion just as yours was. No one moved.

The slow steps of Aika shifted from the back of the house as she made her way to the foyer sighing and shaking her head as she walked.

“Who in their right mind would dare to ring a house like this?” She says as she drifts out of sight down the hall to answer the door. Distant but unmistakable voices filtered their way to the family’s ears.

“Inosuke stop ringing the bell like that!” Tanjiro’s voice echoed down the hallway.

“See I told you we had the wrong house!” Zenitsu whined. “All this and we’re lost!”

“This is the address we were given by Shinobu.”

“I never trusted her!”

“One of his wives would have answered not the old hag!”

“INOSUKE!”

“Not that I like agreeing with the boar but… This house just isn’t right. A guy like Uzui would have a much flashier house.”

“What are you talking about? It’s HUGE!”

All the wives sighed as the voices rang through the house. Of all the times for these boys to visit? Tengen squeezed your leg as he stood searching your eyes.

“I’m fine. Go see to the boys before Aika kills them.” You say with a smile. Akia was indeed about to beat these strange boys but the mention of Uzui had her merely giving them a death glare. Tengen rounded the corner just in time to see Akia slam the door in their faces.

“HEY! OPEN UP” Inosuke yelled, hitting the door frame.

“Well, you did insult her, what did you expect?”

“Zenitsu, you were just as unkind.”

“WHAT?”

Akia stood silently as the voices continued to argue, looking at Tengen for some sort of clarification.

“Yeah… they are always like that. I’ll handle this.” Sighing Akia stepped aside as she watched the young lord’s aura change. The anxious energy he had had for weeks was masked by the ultra-calm suave. Tengen tucked his wounded arm in the front of his Yukata. The garment opened slightly, revealing more of his toned chest. Leaning against the door frame, he slid the door forcibly, with a loud crack as it hit the other side.

“You have some nerve showing up to my house like this. Most would have been kind enough to send word first.” Tengen says sternly. All three boys were startled at his sudden appearance. They could practically see the stars that tinkled around him as he was waiting for their praise and awe at the sight of him.

“Mr. Uzui! I apologize! We were traveling this way when Ms. Shinobu said we should come visit. We should have sent a crow.” Tanjiro manically explains as he bows low.

“What? What’s a retired guy like you got to do anyway?” Zenitsu deadpans, regardless of what happened in the entertainment district, to which he remembered very little, he still wasn’t swayed by Tengen’s flamboyant attitude. A smug smile spread across Tengen’s face as he cocked his head to look down at the boy.

“I’m retired with four beautiful wives. Use your imagination.” Zenitsu rolled his eyes as he mumbled under his breath.

“You wanna repeat that yellow head?” Tengen retorted.

“What are you losing your hearing too in your retirement?” Zenitsu shot back. Tanjiro could tell that a swift punch was about to be delivered.

“We can come back some other time. Right Zenitsu? Inosuke… Inosuke?”

Zenitsu, Tanjiro, and Tengen all stared at the empty space that had once been Inosuke. Confusion was clear to see on all their expressions. They stood frozen as the breeze and a distant wind chime was the only signal that time was still going. Where had the pig vanished to?

“Lord Uzui? The boar child is… in the house.” Akia said gently.

“Woah this reminds me of the house I stayed in in the entertainment district!?” Inosuke’s voice called out. How the kid had managed to slip past him was beyond him. But to be honest these boys had been throwing Tengen for a loop ever since he’d met them,

“HEY kid where are you going?” Tengen yells, going after the invader with swift feet. Tanjiro and Zenitsu shrug to one another as they follow him into the house.

“I’ve never been in such a fancy house before.” Inosuke says as he sniffs the wallpaper.

“I can see why.” Tengen complains. “Listen I’m all about reunions and all but right now isn’t the best time.”

The comments fall on deaf ears as the boar continues his trek down the hallway. Tengen follows swiftly behind the boy as the others follow behind him.

“Listen I’ll treat you all to dinner later, but this really isn’t the time or place for this.”

“Wow you must have really been up to something” Zenitsu’s tone implying the suggestive nature of his thoughts.

“Well sort of yes.”

Inosuke turns the corner down the long hallway only to be confronted by a wall of wives. They had all joined you at bottom of the staircase as you still hadn’t moved from your spot. Their bodies create a line from one side to the next. Tengen stopped at the sight. His eyes searching yours. Your soft smile was the confirmation he needed that you were still alright.

“It’s been a while, boys.” Makio chuckles as she puts her hands on her hips.

“Ah Makio…” Inosuke says giving the woman an awkward thumbs up.

“Why is it that he can remember her name and not mine?” Tanjiro complains.

“I can think of two reasons” Zenitsu responds as he makes grabby motions above his chest. Tanjiro pales, unable to form the right words of displeasure. Tengen, however, is swift to give the golden boy the punch he had been asking for from the moment he got to his home. He couldn’t help the smile of satisfaction as the boy groaned.

“It is good to see that you are all in good health.” Hinatsuru adds, her timing perfect as another groan fell from Zenitsu’s lips. “If you would like, you are welcome to join us for dinner this evening. I am sure Tengen would love to catch up.”

Tengen’s eyes fell back to you. You hadn’t felt any other pain. If it was a false alarm, it would be cruel to send the boys away when they had traveled all this way. They were the reason your family had come back to you after all.

“It would be a pleasure to have you.” You add with a wide smile.

“We have the whole day. Perhaps we should show the boys around town?” Suma says.

“I’m sure they would love the sweets shop.” Hinatsuru agrees. Lights could be seen sparkling in all their eyes. Tengen shifted in the hallway to lean against the wall. This was not where he wanted to be devoting his energy today. Despite your assurance, his nerves wouldn’t rest.

“Will you be joining us?” Suma asks you. You gently shake your head.

Sighing deep you thought it rude to continue to sit and not greet the young men who had been instrumental in saving the lives of your family. You braced your hands on either side of the staircase and tried to lift yourself off the bottom step. When Makio saw you struggling, she was quick to help ease you to your feet. Tengen was next to you in an instant, his hand fell to your lower back.

“Don’t push yourself.” He whispers.

“Of course,” you say, patting his arm to comfort his nerves. “How about I fix us some tea before you all head out for the day?”

“Thank you! That would be great” Tanjiro says with a beaming smile, slowly he lowered the box from his back, and when it hit the floor, the small door creaked open. You had heard the stories from multiple people about the small demon girl that was somehow an ally, but this was your first time seeing her in person. Her features were round and her kimono far too big for her, she was absolutely adorable minus the bit in her mouth.

“There she is!” Tengen yelled, making a quick move that was successfully dodged to ruffle Nezuko’s hair. She hummed as she maneuvered between bodies to find Suma. She hugged her gently. Apparently the two had become quite close after the events of the last mission. The energy of the house was beginning to pick up and it made you happy to see your family so delighted at the arrival of these four. Their energy was contagious.

“Thank you for visiting, this is the most excitement the house has seen in some time.” you joke. You heard it before your body registered what had happened. The sound of water hitting the floor as if someone dropped their tea. You couldn’t believe it as you stared at the small puddle that sat between your feet. The front of your yukata was soaked through. You couldn’t really believe it. There was no denying it.

“Ew gross! Even the boar at least knows to go outside.” Zenitsu recoils.

“What Zenitsu… no… that’s not. We’ve got a lot to talk about.” Tanjiro says dumbfounded.

You couldn’t help your labored breathing as the panic and excitement set in. Your water had broken, and this baby was officially coming. Tengen was swift as he picked you up. A small yelp escaped your lips at the surprise. He made short work of the stairs taking two at a time. The wives were swift on his heels as they followed until he sat you down gently on the futon of his room. You immediately tried to sit up and Tengen’s strong hands were easing you back down.

“Tengen, I don’t have to lay down” you say as you push against him. You chuckle slightly as he starts to ease your shoulders back down again. His determination was amusing until you noticed the trembling of his hand. Glancing up at your husband you finally noticed the panic in his eyes. His beautiful face was plagued with worry and his brows knit together.

“Tengen, my love, we’ve been preparing for this.”

“It’s too early.” Tengen whispers, his eyes downcast as they shift for some sort of reassurance.

“Tengen, go fetch the doctor, we’ve got this” Makio says as she kneels next to the futon moving pillows to brace behind your back. Suma was getting you another less wet yukata. Hinatsuru and Akia were bringing in fresh linens and running through the list that they had been given by the midwives. Tengen gripped your shoulder before standing. He didn’t want to go but knew he needed to. The worries of being away when he was needed bothered him.

The doctor's house was only a 10-minute run from here and he would also have to go to the midwives’ house too. In total he would only be away from you for a maximum of an hour, but that was too long to be away for his liking. However, the longer he debated leaving the less time he was going to have. This baby was coming, and it wasn’t going to wait for his indecision. Kissing you quickly on the forehead Tengen moved like lightning from the room, down the hallway, and down the stairs.

The boys were still standing awkwardly in the hall, not sure what to do or where to go. When they had decided to visit this was not what they thought the day was going to look like. Inosuke was surprisingly quiet, he was crouching down leaning his back against the wall. Zeniseu looked just as disgusted as he paced the floor. Nezuko was sitting next to Inosuke, her head tilted in an attempt to look under the mask. She was humming a gentle little tune as she patted Inosuke’s knee.

Tanjiro was at the ready, his harori was off and folded on the ground and his uniform sleeves were rolled up. He had a stack of linens in his arms. His eyes were determined. Tengen laughed as he ruffled Tanjiro’s hair as he passed.

“Want to save the day again Kamado?” Tengen asked, he was surprised by how just seeing the kid so ready to help eased his worried mind.

“Of course!” he said, inching closer to Tengen with enthusiasm. Tengen took the linens from his hands and chucked them at the pacing yellow head.

“Take these upstairs and don’t make a fuss about it.” Tengen ordered. “Kamado you're with me.”

Tengen ruffled Nezuko’s hair as he passed, earning him a delighted hum and ignoring the disgruntled Zenitsu. The front garden was quiet in comparison to the hectic house. A light breeze ran through the branches and ruffled the wisteria vines that lined the walls. filling the air with a sweet honey-like smell. Tengen took a deep breath to steady himself.

“Alright Kamado, I need you to fetch the midwife. I’m going to get the doctor. Between the two of us we should be back in no time.”

“Got it! Where am I headed?”

“The midwife house is in the center of town. It's got a purple banner on the second story window. Ask anyone in town and they’ll point you in the right direction. We can go partially together for a bit.”

“I’m on it.” Tanjiro says as confidence fills his chest. Tengen nods once and then they are both off. Keeping up with Tengen’s pace was always a difficult task, but with the urgency with which he was running it was nearly impossible. As they started to reach the town the streets were becoming more crowded and Tengen took to the rooftops to continue his stride. Tanjiro was impressed that even after his wounds from their last mission he was able to maneuver like a true shinobi would. Tengen pointed his finger east toward the main road.

“This is where we part ways. I’ll see you back at the house. Be swift for me my friend.” Tengen yells, flashing forward and heading in the opposite direction. Leaving the boy on his own, Tengen made his way to the Doctor’s house. The once blooming trees were now flush, which made them difficult to maneuver through. So Tengen was forced to use the street. He noticed the eyes of many passersby as he ran. This town was a calm one and if anyone was moving with urgency it was a cause for staring. Though many had grown used to the strange ways of the Uzui family.

The doctor's house was as calm as ever, and Tengen had other plans for it. Always a man of quick thought but little consideration, Tengen took to the trees and up to the second floor. He now knew the layout of the house after your visits together. Pulling the window open, Tengen jumped into the doctor's office.

The silence that fell as Tengen stared into the eyes of a rickety old man and a very confused Haru as he landed forcibly in the office. The scene froze as they continued to just awkwardly stare at each other. The looks of shock as the old man looked between Haru and Tengen.

“Ummmm is something wrong?” Haru asked, the silence still reverberating off the walls.

“Where's the doctor?” Tengen says as if he hadn’t just intruded on a medical examination.

“My father left this morning for a meeting. He should be back tomorrow.”

“Where is this meeting?”

“Yokohama… he left on the train this morning.”

“Too far to run.” Tengen tsked.

“Obviously…” Haru responded. “What’s going on? Is someone hurt?”

“You’ll have to do then.” Tengen says, ignoring the young man. Without warning Tengen grabbed him, lifting Haru with surprising ease as he threw him over his shoulder.

“What the hell!?! Are you out of your mind? Put me down!” Haru yelled, trying to force his way out of Tengen’s strong grasp.

“Sorry old man, you’ll have to reschedule your appointment.” Tengen said, giving the man still sitting in shock a quick wink before bracing his leg on the window seal to jump back into the trees.

“Don’t you dare jump!” Haru yells, closing his eyes as his efforts to escape are futile.

“Better hang on, I’ve only got the one good arm to hold ya with” Tengen jokes before leaping from the window.

Haru yelled as the weightless feeling overtook his senses as he was flying through the air in Tengen’s grasp. The leaves brushed against his face as they jumped through the trees and down to the street. Tengen was running before Haru even had a moment to catch his breath. The young man had never felt so humiliated. Thrown over a man's shoulder and no matter how much he tried to struggle he couldn't seem to budge from his grip. Tengen chuckled at the yelp that escaped Haru’s lips as he jumped to a rooftop.

“You’re crazy! Put me down immediately!”

“No chance. Plus, you really want me to put you down now?” Tengen laughed. Haru’s grip on Tengen’s arm tightened as he looked down at the distant ground. “That’s what I thought.”

Tengen ran at a quick pace as he made his way back to the house.

Haru’s normally refined appearance was completely disheveled. His long black hair is an absolute mess, the bun he normally wore was falling messily over his shoulders. Revealing his long hair that reached his waist. His haori was slipping from his shoulders and he was missing a shoe. The entire household was frozen at the scene. The wives were all standing around and talking like it was any other day. It was not the scene that Tengen was prepared for. He had anticipated frantic running, and the full swing of labor. He was met with essentially a tea party.

“Oh my gosh Tengen, what have you done my love?” You ask shocked. Tengen glances around the room as if somewhere the answer could be found for what he was witnessing. Ignoring your husband, you walk, but more waddle, over to the flustered Haru. You bow as much as you can manage to the still flustered man.

“Haru, you have my sincerest apologies for the treatment you suffered from my husband.” Standing straight again you help pull his Haori back on his shoulders. Haru glances around the room at the piles of linen on the floor, the bowls with a steaming kettle next to it, and nervous the energy and suddenly it all clicked.

“You’re in labor?” Haru said more to himself than anyone else.

“It’s starting to look that way.” You say with a soft smile. Haru nodded his head quickly as if making an internal list of things to do.

” You should have gone for the midwife.” Haru says, turning to Tengen with his exasperated hands and tone.

“I’ve got that covered.” Tengen replies with a wide smile. Haru can’t help the deep sigh that leaves him.

“How are you feeling?” Haru asks with a kind smile, as he sweeps his long hair back into a neat bun.

“I mean… terrified but excited. Hesitant but wanting to get things rolling. In pain but also not… so nervous maybe?” You laugh. You didn’t know you could exist with so many emotions rumbling through you like thunder but somehow you were managing to keep it all together. When Tengen’s warm hand found the small of your back as he listened to you explain your feelings you smiled warmly up at him. Perhaps you did know how you were still holding it together.

“That sounds like a perfect explanation to me” Tengen agrees. A loud crash of the sliding door hitting the wood frame pulled everyone’s attention down the hall as a flash of green skirted in a dash in front of them. Tanjiro was out of breath but the old woman that was straddling his back piggyback style looked like she had had the time of her life.

“Am I late?” Tanjiro panted breaths pausing between each word as his worried eyes looked around at the group.

“I knew you wouldn’t let me down!” Tengen praised as he clasped him tightly on the shoulder. Tanjiro let out the most relieved breath as he lowered to his knees letting the old midwife find her rickety footing.

“Thank you, ma’am,” Tanjiro bowed. She patted his hand gently as she walked over to the group of women, she knew would be her helpers. She studied your stomach, placing her hand low against it feeling some unknowable sign that you only hoped was a good thing.

“Let’s get started ladies. Where are we setting up?”

“Upstairs in the master” Hinatsuru replied ready for business. She looked and sounded as ready as she did when she was on demon hunting missions, and it made you feel even more relaxed as if you were in safe hands.

“Then let’s get to it. It may be a long night.” The midwife placed her hand on your back and attempted to guide you up the stairs but as your eyes focused on the narrow ascent your mouth suddenly felt dry and your feet felt heavy. You turned to look at your husband. His worried gaze meeting your own. You weren't sure where the tears came from, but you felt them well up.

“Tengen I’m…” You start but Tengen’s lips find yours quickly and fiercely. His kiss is deep and hot, and his fingers dig into your hair to pull you in closer. A wave of pain crashes through you and your pained gasp breaks the kiss. The contraction reminding you just how real this all was.

“You’ve got this. I love you.” He whispers to you as you begin your trek up the stairs. Tengen watches you as you disappear around the corner and the resolve, he had had crumbles as his hand begins to tremble. Hinatsuru kisses him gently as she passes heading up the stairs. As do Suma and Mako. And suddenly the hallway is quiet, and he’s left with three young boys and a demon girl, and a worried doctor in training.

“I’ll make us some tea” Tanjiro volunteers.

The sun had set and yet there had been no news from the party upstairs. From time-to-time Tengen’s heart would leap into his chest at the sound of hurried footsteps down the staircase but it was only one of the wives there to retrieve more hot water, tea and food, or more linens. The only update he had gotten was that the labor was proceeding smoothly, and you were doing well. An update that did not help his nerves. Especially since Tanjiro had been the only voice of ease he had. The men had retreated to the living room off the kitchen but were eerily quiet. Tanjiro had made small talk about how he had helped with the delivery of his siblings and that his mother was a beautifully strong woman.

The boar hadn’t made much of a move since your water had broken. He sat quietly in the corner of the room while Nezuko continued to pat his bent knee lightly. One could be fooled into thinking that he was asleep under that mask but something about his calculated breathing said otherwise. Tengen didn’t know of a time when he seen him so calm and quiet.

Yellowhead had quieted his complaints to a low whisper, that fortunately Tanjiro was doing his best to drown out. They had been dark whispers of pain, blood, and death which were usually about himself but today we’re talking on a grander scale. Tengen had not missed the swift jabs Tanjiro dealt to his teammates ribs when he said something troubling.

Tengen had tried to keep his thoughts from those dark places as well but as he kept his ears peeled to the sounds upstairs those thoughts lingered on your hurtful gasps and low moans. He was so lost in thought that he didn’t notice the young girl crawl next to him, not until her small, clawed hand patted his knee the same way that she had been comforting the boar. Tengen jolted slightly at the contact before smiling down at her. Neziko hummed happily as his large hand came down to ruffle her hair.

As the hours passed, he didn’t think he could drink anymore tea, his body shook with the caffeine and nerves and sitting was no longer an option. He paces the lower halls, as Haru watched him. He wondered if by the morning the varnish would be removed in the place of his hurried steps. Zenitsu was finally asleep, and with him went his constant mutterings, he especially calmed down when Nezuko slept next to his side. Tanjiro was still at the ready, sitting on his knees ready to be instructed in any task.

A sharp cry rang through the house, and everyone bolted at the noise, and Tengen was at the bottom of the stairs in an instant. He knew that he was instructed to stay away, it wasn’t a man’s place and the midwives had scolded him at every attempt. But every fiber of his being was screaming.

“Tengen”

The whimper had been faint, so quiet he doubted anyone could have heard it beside himself. It was your voice, and it was crying for him. The desperation he heard there frightened him. Without warning he vanished up the stairs with shinobi speed. Haru had barely noticed as the blur of his motion hardly registered. Haru stood from the low table to follow. Tengen threw the bedroom door open, the slam rang through the house. Tengen’s breath caught in his throat at the sight of you.

You were drenched in sweat as your hair was plastered to the sides of your face. Your skin was flushed with the effort as your body fought through the pain. Hinatsuru was holding one of your hands, breathing in synced breaths with you. Makio was speaking with the midwife near your ankles and Suma was folding linens. All eyes were on Tengen as if he was a demon to be fought. Tengen could barely hear as his heart thrummed in his ears until finally the weary voice of the midwife caught his attention.

“Young man, this is no place for you.” The midwife scolded. “We have work to do.” Tengen paid little attention to her brash tone and accusatory motions as she tried to shoo him away. Haru had stopped at his side placing his hand on his massive shoulder as if to ease him away. Tengen’s fierce eyes turned to him. Haru was startled by their fierce fuchsia intensity that left no room for argument.

“Will you stay here in the hall if we need you?” Haru was taken aback at the fragility of his voice, and how his sharp gaze turned to a pleading look in his eyes. Any attempt at persuading him down the stairs faded on his lips as he nodded his head. Tengen went into the room without any hesitation. You were relieved to see him. Something about him being there made your mind settle, even more so as his strong form settled behind you. He used his body to replace the pillows that had been propping you up, his long legs flanking your sides and his thighs and torso bracing your back and head. You let your arms drape on either side of his thighs giving you so much strong muscle to hang on to. Tengen’s strong arms gripped your shoulders, and when you tilted your head backward all you could see was his beautiful face looking down at you.

“We are getting close young man; you give me any trouble and you are out of here. You understand me?” The midwife yelled. He had no intention of getting in the way, and was ready to help in any way he could, but not even Muzan himself was going to get him to leave you. He nodded sharply at her.

“Good. Now, young Mrs. We’re gonna start the home stretch, push when I tell you.” You nod as the waves of contractions begin to fade into a solid tsunami of pain. You hold Tengen as you dig your nails into him, trying to focus on the breaths instructed by Hinatsuru and the orders of the midwife. As each push makes you feel like you are splitting open; You can’t help the cry that leaves you.  as if, if you don’t release the noise the pain will eat you up. You rock slightly against Tengen’s strong grip, as you push and push and push. You think for a moment that there is no way, there is no end, that you won’t be strong enough to make it, but then like slipping into a warm bath it was over and small cries filled the air.

You couldn’t help the happy cry that left you as the room erupted into a joyous roar. Suma and Makio were hugging each other as the midwife cleaned the child with warm linens before placing the child directly on your chest. Your vision was flooded with a small tuft of white hair and tiny hands curling against your chest. You marveled at how such a small body could be so warm. So perfect.

“A boy.” The midwife says relieved. The tension of the room relaxes immediately. You can hardly take your eyes off him. You didn’t know such love could be felt for someone, but you tear your eyes from the settling child to your husband for a moment. Tengen was nearly weeping as he looked down at you both. His son, the perfect combination of you and him that he could hardly believe it. He didn’t know if he could ever be happier than he was at that moment.

“Tengen he’s perfect.” You whisper. Tengen leans down kissing your forehead gently before running his impossibly large hand over the child’s head. His fingertips brushing lightly over the silver hair that so resembled his own.

“You did so well,” Tengen smiles.

“I surely hope so” you laugh “It was kind of a pain” Tengen can’t help the deep laugh that rattles the room. Hinatsuru helps wipe the hair still plastered to your face. You lean toward her, letting her see the child’s face fully. Tears welling up in her eyes as she smiles warmly at you both.

“What a beautiful boy,” she whispers. You couldn’t describe the happiness you felt. It was distant at first but like a coming storm your body shifted. It started low, the pain, something deep along your spine. You hadn’t been expecting it and the gasp that left you startled not only you but your partners as well.

“My Love?” Tengen asks as he watches your brows knit together. Your breath comes in shaking gasps as you brace against the pain. It wraps around you again.

“Tengen something’s wrong.” You cry. Tengen couldn’t help the panic that filled him. Your voice was trembling. Tengen and Hinatsuru looked horrified toward Makio and Suma whose eyes were focused on the midwife’s hands as she pulled the blood cover linen away from you. You could see the horror in Tengen’s eyes as he watched.

“Tengen, what's wrong?” You beg. Another wave of pain hit you. The child in your arms begins crying again and Hinatsuru reluctantly takes the child from your shuttering grasp. Pulling the white-haired babe close to her chest. Your hands found Tengen’s thigh and his hand as he pulled you tightly against him.

“My love.” Tengen’s voice was barely over a whisper. Tengen was shaking. You had never seen such an expression on his face. It frightened you, but the pain pulled you back as it rolled through your body again. The midwife settled back to her knees between your legs as another linen was brought away bloody. “HARU!” Tengen’s voice boomed, and the sliding door banged open again. The gentle man looks wide eyed at Tengen and then at the growing pile of soiled linens.

“Haru do something.” Tengen begged. Haru looked at the scene and suddenly all his years of training felt like they had never happened. He sat next to the midwife on the floor, asking to be of any assistance. Tengen gripped you tightly as you groaned in pain again. He wasn’t ready. This couldn’t happen. He knew the risks but as you cried out in his arms, he felt utterly helpless. The yellow-haired boy had been listing all the fears that Tengen had told himself for months now downstairs and he had tried so hard not to listen. Tengen remembered his father’s reaction to one of his brides being lost in childbirth and he had replaced her within the month. He wasn’t his father. The thought of losing any of his wives nearly drove him to madness. The panic in him rose, he wanted to yell, he wanted to do something, anything, to help you. Tengen felt as if his heart was going to burst. The wives had converged together as they wept quietly as they watched.

“What’s going on?” You begged again as your body geared up as a wave hit you again. The midwife helped spread your legs further before she patted swiftly on your knee.

“Get ready to push again.” She called.

“What?!” You and Tengen said in unison. Your body didn’t give you a chance to process her words before pulling your attention back to the labor at hand. Just like before your body found a rhythm to the pain, and contractions, and you pushed.

“That’s it! Great job!” The midwife called. You pushed hard a final time and like before a wave of relief flooded your body. The sound of another cry echoed through the room that was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. You looked at Tengen, who had tears streaming down his face as another small body with white hair was placed on your chest.

“Surprise twins!” The midwife calls excitedly. “And a girl this time.”

You look down at your crying daughter with relieved eyes. Tengen falters behind you as his hand braces his weight on the floor. The overwhelming relief that everything was okay nearly had him faint. The wives pull in close as the family all have a desperate sigh of relief. Hinatsuru gently places the newborn into Tengen’s arms then wipes her falling tears from her face.

“I’m glad we didn’t panic, '' Suma says, relieved as her large tears are still streaming down her face. Makio’s hand comes down hard on the top of her head.

“It is a good thing you have so many helping hands” Haru jokes, his face was still pale and sweat lined his brow, but he was at least still upright. The midwife patted his shoulder signaling for him to move.

“Give the family a moment” she ordered. Haru nodded gladly as the old woman hooked her hand on his elbow and they waddled together back downstairs. At the bottom of the stairs sat all of the guests of the house anxiously awaiting news from the turbulent upper halls. With a soft smile the midwife relieved them of their worries. Inosuke for the first time since the day had started snorted a sigh of relief before cracking his back to stand.

“Nature can be tough,” he said, adjusting his head as he spoke. Tanjiro could only imagine the types of things Inosuke must have witnessed living in the mountains as he had. The house that night had found peace again as Haru escorted the midwife home. The boys had decided to stay the night, making the family a large breakfast for them to enjoy as the sun rose before, they departed for their next mission. It had definitely not been the visit they had been expecting but were honored to be the first of the core to welcome the new Uzui members into the world.

Tengen sat on the back porch as the breeze caught the wind chimes, sending a cascade of light sound across the yard. The light dappled through the branches casting long shadows and yellow ochre fragments that played with the setting sun. He would have found it beautiful if he could have managed to take his eyes off the resting bundles nestled against his broad chest, but he couldn’t. Tengen could only look at the small fingers that gripped his. The soft white hair that curled behind tiny ears. And the fluttering eyes of little dreaming minds. He didn’t think he had ever seen something more beautiful. The ornate silk you had bought many months ago was truly the perfect gift as it allowed him to have his children so close and safe.

You had all been surprised by the arrival of two beautiful children but in the passing weeks could not have imagined life without them both. Your footsteps were light, and you wished you could sneak up on him just so you could watch your husband rock your children without disturbing them but like all things your retired sound Hashira of a husband heard you coming from a mile away. He looked up at you as you approached him. The biggest smile plastered on his face. You settled next to him as you leaned your head against his shoulder. Looking down to see your sleeping babes nestled in opposite directions.

“They don’t look real sometimes.” You whisper. Tengen catches your lips with his quickly in a brisk kiss before casting his attention back to his arms.

“Beautiful like their mother.” You lean forward slowly before kissing all your loved ones gently on the forehead, starting with the babes and then Tengen. You hadn’t known that the feeling that would overwhelm you with so much joy had existed until then and were still caught off guard by them from time to time. You relaxed against Tengen’s shoulder letting your eyes drift from silver head to silver head before the sound of heavy running footsteps invaded the garden. Makio had made quick time from wherever she had been, and she was bracing her hands against her knees as she caught her breath.

“Is something wrong?” You ask worried as she shakes her head ‘no’ quickly dispelling your anxious energy.

“Get Suma and Hinatsuru will ya” she asks. You stand quickly and call them throughout the house. As all the wives gather on the back porch Makio has finally been able to regain her breath.

“Is retired life already catching up with you” Tengen jests “we will have to start training again soon.”

“Well, we might not be training for a while it seems” Makio responds. The wives all share a look of disbelief before leveling her with a knowing gaze. They are in the yard hugging her before she has a chance to evade them.

“Really?” Hinatsuru asks.

“Really”

“Why couldn’t it have been me next” Suma whines.

“What are you talking about?” Tengen asks, still confused by the sudden group hug that didn’t include him. All the wives turn looking at their beautiful but thick husband with raised brows.

“Well, I’d say you won’t be training with Makio for what… about nine months or so.” You replied. As if the lightning finally struck, Tengen's shocked gaze falls upon his blonde wife. Tengen takes care to brace the little bodies as he places one in your arms and the other in Suma’s before scooping Makio up into a tight hug kissing her deeply. Hinatsuru leans over to whisper in your ear.

“I guess this would be an awkward time to tell him I am also late.” She says. You can’t help the gasp that leaves you before the cheerful laugh that follows.

“He might actually pass out!” You laugh. You hadn’t imagined what this life would look like. All those months ago it seemed like an impossible dream. But now with your child in your arms and the joy that would follow. You couldn’t imagine it any other way.

The End
