Work Text:

San was sitting in the war room nervously waiting for Dean to get back from a food run. He needed to tell his brother something important. The older man walked through the door carrying their dinner and beer for them.

“Hey, Sammy. I got you your rabbit food.”

Sam looked at Dean biting his lip nervously. He looked at Sam with his eyebrow raised. The older man knew something was up with his brother but wasn’t sure what it was. He set the food in front of him and sat down in front of Sam.

“Dean. I want to tell you something, but I need you to listen before you ask questions. Okay?”

“Sure, Sammy.” He took a deep breath and looked at his brother.

“Dean. I’m non-binary. That means, at least for me, that I don’t have gender. I know it’s a lot to take in, but I needed you to know that.” He explained softly.

“So what pronouns do you use?” The older man asked as he took a bite of his dinner. Sam looked at Dean, shocked at how informed he was about everything.

“I… I use They/Them and He/Him pronouns.”

“Don’t look too surprised about me knowing stuff. Charlie taught me a lot of stuff about gender and sexuality.” Dean looked up at Sam and smiled softly. “Do you want me to keep calling you my brother or would like to be called my sibling?”

“Sibling would be nice, actually.” They smiled back at Dean.

“Okay, little Sib. When did you learn you were non-binary?”

“I never felt right in my own body, and for years I thought it was demon blood. But finally one day it clicked that it was my gender and nothing supernatural. So I did research and put two and two together.”

“I’m happy for you Sammy. All I’ve ever wanted is for you to be happy with yourself.” The older man cleared his throat as he took a drink of his beer. “No more chick flick moments for while.”

“Whatever, Jerk.” Sam smiled as he started to eat.

“Yeah. Whatever, Bitch.”

Notes:

My explanation of being non-binary isn't for everyone. It's my personal experience with being non-binary and how to explain it for myself.
