Owen came back home after a successful trip to California to see his dad and make amends so he decided to have TK and Carlos over for dinner so they could talk about why Owen went to California on a whim without telling anyone besides Judd.
TK and Carlos arrived at the house and walked in since TK still had his key to his dad’s house “hey guys!” Owen said when he hugged TK and Carlos “dad are you ok?” TK asked Owen “of course I am son, why wouldn’t I be?” Owen asked TK “I don’t know, you just seem happier and less punchy.” TK told Owen.
“I went to California to deal with some family issues but everything is resolved and I’m just happier.” Owen told TK who said ok “what kind of family issues?” Carlos asked Owen “why don’t we go sit on the back porch and I can tell you about my younger brother Tyler.” Owen said before the group moved outside.
TK listens to Owen tell stories about Tyler “how did Tyler die?” TK asked Owen “Tyler reminded me so much of you growing up so it kinda makes sense that your mom and I named you Tyler to remember your uncle who didn’t make it past 10 years old.” Owen said before he looked at TK and Carlos.
“I used to surf a lot as a kid so one day I was teaching your uncle how to surf just the basics on the sand and I saw a wave I wanted to catch before we headed back home. Tyler wasn’t very good about being told no like someone else I know.” Owen said which made TK smile a bit.
Owen continue the story “Tyler followed me out into the water when I told him not to and I thought he had a small wave, a beginners wave but it wasn’t a beginners wave it was a big wave which Tyler got swept up in and he sucked up a lot of water on his way to the shoreline.” Owen said before he stopped for a second.
“I did everything right. I got Tyler out of the water to the lifeguards and called 9-1-1. The paramedic did everything they could to help Tyler out but he didn’t make it and ever since I have blamed myself for his death. I was his older brother. I should have done more to help him.” Owen told TK and Carlos.
“Dad, it sounded like an accident. You couldn’t have prevented the wave from being bigger than you thought it would be.” TK told Owen who looked up “thanks son, I always thought my dad resented me but I learned that grief split the family up.” Owen told the guys.
“After Tyler died my mom and I moved to New York but your grandpa stayed back and started a new family which I don’t blame him for. I met his new wife, she seems very mad at me but my half brother is super nice and we exchanged numbers so we can keep in touch.” Owen told TK
“I know that you blame yourself for a lot of things but your brother dying isn’t one of them.” TK told Owen “thanks son. I know that now and hopefully we can work on getting back to a better relationship and I’m truly sorry for what happened during the snowstorm and how I wasn’t there for you when you needed me the most.” Owen told TK who smiled.
“It's in the past. We can start anew today.” TK told Owen who said ok “do you have any pictures of Tyler? I kinda want to see what my namesake looked like.” TK told Owen “I think I have some pictures around here somewhere.” Owen said before he went inside and got some pictures from his childhood.
For the rest of the evening Owen told stories about Tyler and how he wants to be just like his older brother in every way possible “do you think Tyler would have been a firefighter also?” TK asked Owen “I’m not sure? Maybe or he could have done something different but I know that he would have loved to be an uncle and met you and the team. He was just a caring kid and always looked out for others.” Owen told TK who smiled.
