Chapter Text
The next few days were spent in both relative peace and chaos. Techno decided he wanted to turn 410 into a greenhouse, it had the most space and got the most sunlight. Phil decided to take over hunting, he didn’t really enjoy the process of skinning the animals so he just caught them. And Tommy helped where he could. He was still too young to get his own job so Wilbur took him to the town's library to get a bunch of books he could use to teach the kid.
Quackity did a lot of the cooking and Wilbur focused more on Tommy. A lot of the other various jobs they took turns doing but those were the main ones.
“Hey Tech, how's the gardening coming along?” Wilbur asked as he opened the door to 410.
“Fine, the dirt in the forest was really good so if we do some composting, it should be able to last a while. Now we just hope that the plants like it just as much as I do.”
“Where did you find seeds? I can’t imagine that you got them from plants you grew.” Wilbur asked.
“Went for a walk a few days ago and came across a plant shop. They had a pretty large variety of seeds to pick from. I grabbed carrots, potatoes, cucumber, rosemary, pretty much whatever I felt like.” Techno explained.
“That's good, glad you managed to find some stuff. It would be nice to have greens again. I miss eating things that aren't berries, soups, or meat.”
Techno walked over to Wilbur, “Hey I'm glad, you're okay. I know I didn’t really say it. I mean I probably did, honestly I can’t remember. But really I am glad everything is working out.”
Wilbur hugged his twin, “I'm glad you're okay too.”
Wilbur left not long after, he had things to do. Such as walking down to the library to get some more books for Tommy. The kid in question was helping Quackity cook so it was just him for this trip.
Since the others joined Wilbur and Quackity, they started doing the walkie thing. Provided a bit of extra security but it also meant they had to start collecting batteries.
He went to the library at least once every two days, it was in good condition so it was nice to spend some time there, reading and just having a good time.
Today he was here to find some music sheets, not having the internet to teach him new songs was really annoying. Thankfully libraries exist.
The library wasn’t far, he and Quackity passed it many times before when out doing various things. And everytime they paced it, he couldn't help but admire it. The outside was a bit more rough looking than the inside.
It had ivy covering it with stained glass for windows. The overgrown plants only added to the whole experience. It was probably a church at some point in time, but it had probably been at least 20 years since then.
If Wilbur had a camera, he would have taken a million photos of the place, that's how pretty it was.
He walked in and breathed in the air, it smelt like old books and leather. It was such a calming scent. It was familiar and relaxing, a consistency in a world of inconsistencies.
The music section of the library was visited quite often by him. By now he knew exactly where everything was in the section. Want music sheets, the shelf by the window, vinyls, right beside the music sheets, cds, just across from the vinyls. He knew where everything was off the top of his head.
Wilbur walked to the shelf with the music sheets and looked for one, a lot of the songs they had were older but there was surprisingly good selection despite that. Not that he was looking for anything in particular, he was just looking for something random to learn.
After looking for a moment he settled on ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’ by Tears For Fears.
It would take maybe two weeks to learn the song, he was a bit rusty still as well as not having a whole lot of time to practice so he felt like he was good with one song for now. He took the sheet and left.
The walk back to the complex was eerily calm. He had gotten used to the peace, so this air the area had was definitely off. Something was wrong.
He folded up the sheet and put it in his pocket as he looked around.
Every step he took, he made sure it was as quiet as he could. He didn’t want to risk anything. Suddenly, he heard steps. Fuck.
He turned around and was faced with a walker. Shit shit shit. He fucking ran. They always seemed to have the luck that one walker meant that there was a hoard. Which meant that he was risking his life by being out right now.
As he ran he pulled out his walkie, “HEY IS ANYONE THERE?”
“Wilbur, what's wrong?” Phil questioned from the otherside.
“A HOARD, I GOT CAUGHT IN IT, START BOARDING SHIT UP. I'M ALMOST BACK.”
“Fuck, okay. Be quick.” Phil said in a rushed way.
By the time Wilbur had put it back in his pocket, about three more walkers had started following him.
Thankfully he was about a block away from the apartment. He ran for his fucking life.
As he got to the complex, Quackity was standing there, his hand motioning for Wilbur to hurry up. He suddenly pulled out a gun and shot the walkers that had been behind Wilbur.
He got into the complex, and Quackity immediately closed the door behind Wilbur and then they ran towards the stairs. Closing the stairwell doors behind them and running upstairs as fast as they could.
At this point Wilbur had fully blanked out and was just running on pure adrenaline. The moment they got to the fifth floor, he fell to the ground. Quackity put his hand on his back, “You okay?”
Wilbur didn't say anything, he just sat there panting. God he wasn’t used to running that much. He gave Quackity a thumbs up instead of actually saying anything.
Quackity helped him up and they walked into the apartment where the others had been sitting, waiting for the two.
Tommy immediately ran to WIlbur, hugging him so tight it felt like Wilbur was suffocating. He hugged back, though not as tightly.
“Wilbur, what happened?” Techno questioned as Wilbur walked to the couch so he could sit comfortably as he caught his breath.
“I was on my way back when a walker showed up out of nowhere. And then another, and suddenly a group was following me as I ran. I'm all good, but I think this is going to be a bigger hoard this time.” Wilbur answered.
Quackity handed him some water.
“Thanks.” he said as he took a sip. Setting the cup on the table after.
Quackity then chimed in, “I don’t think we will just be able to wait this one out like usual. Which means we need to think of ways to kill them, take them out slowly, no need to try and get all of them at once.”
“I agree, getting some practice in wouldn’t hurt either. We can’t go on waiting it out forever.” Techno agreed.
“What do you mean? We can't just go out there, have you not seen how many walkers there are. Practice? You go out there and you die.” Phil said.
“Phil has a point,” Wilbur said, “But so do Q and Tech. We need to kill some, Q and I have a bit of practice already. But Tech and you Phil, how many walkers did you come across in the cabin. It wouldn't have been long before a hoard would show up and you wouldn't be able to defend yourselves. I think we should wait a few days, hopefully a good portion of it will have passed by then, and then we can kill off the remaining.”
“Yeah that makes sense actually, we should do that. Phil you can't argue this one, you know it's what we need to do.” Techno said.
Phil sighed, “Okay yeah I guess you do have a point with that.”
Tommy sat in silence the entire time, probably too confused about what the adults had been talking about to continue talking his usual nonsense.
“Alright, glad we all agree. Then we will wait three days, see how much we have left and then decide on how to go from there. Until then, no one will leave the fifth or fourth floor.” Quackity decided.
When they had all agreed on what to do, Techno went back to the fourth floor, and Phil took Tommy back to their apartment.
That left Wilbur and Quackity.
“Are you sure you’re alright?” Quackity asked.
“I’m fine, tired. But fine.” Wilbur said as he continued to get his breathing under control.
Quackity waited a moment before he asked, “Well did you get what you were looking for? New sheet music right?”
Wilbur put his hand in his pocket and pulled the paper out, “Yup, right here.” He handed it to Quackity.
The other took the piece of paper and unfolded it, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World? I like that one, I can’t wait for you to play it.”
Quackity set the paper down on the table before sitting down next to Wilbur on the couch. Wilbur wasn’t gone long but he genuinely felt like he was going to die. The world flashed before his eyes. He was glad to be here to say the least.
Everyone was gathering some weapons to go do practice. Techno had found swords in one of the apartments and decided that was going to be his weapon of choice, Quackity with his axe, Wilbur used a gun as well as a sword as to not use up bullets. And finally Phil, he decided that he would use an axe as well, mainly because that was a weapon they had easier access to.
Tommy on the other hand wasn’t given anything but a fairly tough stick. No one trusted him with more than that, but they all agreed that he should be given something at least.
“Well all good to go?” Techno asked.
All of them agreed and then they left. The hoard had mainly passed by over the past few days and left a few stragglers here and there, so they had to deal with them. Giving the group a perfect way to practice.
Techno and Phil went off in one direction, And Quackity, Wilbur and Tommy went off in another.
It was their goal to clean out the area, get practice, and use the walkies if you need help.
“Why don’t I get something cool?” Tommy asked.
“You're too young, can’t have you hurting us or yourself.” Wilbur said.
“Also we don't trust you.” Quackity added on.
“But I'm a big man, you can trust me.” Tommy exclaimed.
Wilbur sighed, “Yeah sure you are.”
They walked around the area, not wanting to go too far in case Tommy got hurt or they ran into a problem and needed to run.
Thankfully, both Wilbur and Quackity had experience killing walkers already, so every time they came across one it was pretty easy to kill.
Tommy found every kill to be extremely fun, though he didn't get to kill any, he enjoyed poking the bodies. Wilbur hated that, but Quackity seemed to find the kid quite entertaining. Especially when a body would twitch and it would freak Tommy out.
It had only been about two hours before they felt gross and decided to call it, “Hey guys, Q and I need to shower and Tommy is getting annoying. Let's call it, yeah?” Wil said over the walkies.
Phil was the one to answer, “Yeah, Tech and I are getting tired. We’ll meet you back home.”
When they all got back, they couldn’t help but look at eachother, all of them fucking disgusting.
“Go well for you two?” Quackity asked.
“Yeah, Phil is surprisingly good at killing.” he paused, “For an old man.” Techno joked.
“Is he now? Wilbur asked. “Kind of surprising since he was so against this whole idea at first.”
“Yeah, you would have thought he had killed before.” Techno answered.
Phil finally cut in, “Okay I have not killed anyone, and if it weren't that they were literal zombies that I was killing, I would be fully against it.”
“Okay, okay we get it Phil you’re not a murderer.” Wilbur said.
“Can we please go back upstairs, I'm hungry.” Tommy said all of a sudden.
“Yes, let's go back up, we all need to shower anyways.” Techno said.
