Chapter Text
So I was writing these stories, following the character of Martin, his early life in the circle, his time as a normal warden, and what he was up to a century later in the blight. The idea was to write the three stories simultaneously, with the three playing off each other. Overambitious? Absolutely. But fun to try.
As this hasn't been updated in a decade obviously stuff happened. For financial reasons I started working 6 days a week. Shortly after I got married. So understandably all my energy and focus was put somewhere else. But since I now have some free time I am blowing the dust off these old ideas and looking through the stuff I had for them. Genuinely enjoyable discovering all these old memories.
This story I was heavily discovery writing. Just starting a chapter and going. I remember the first chapter fondly as I am still happy with how it introduced all the characters pretty quickly and some of the dynamics in this group. I was surprised at the following chapters, as I have always remembered them as more boring than they were on re-reading. I suppose because I was trudging through it seeing where it went it probably felt more dull than it is on reading. I was pleasantly surprised at some of the little bits in here. I am definitely using the 'Stumble Inn' again somewhere. While of course there are typos, sentence structure and word use I wince at. On the whole I liked this more than I expected.
The other thing I remember about this is the experience of creating a character, and instantly knowing I liked them, and exactly how they were going to die. And that it was good that they die for the story.
I dont right now plan to continue this story, so have added a Discontinued label. However unlike the circle I am actually considering coming back to this some day after reading all the stuff I had for it.
If I dont, while the circle explains martins understandable desire to protect others from the experience he had. This story was to explain exactly why he was willing to go to the extremes he did. In other words, no happy ending here.
