An Unlikely Theory of Globalization || Karlnap

Summary:

Sapnap (a trans, asthmatic, boy with low blood pressure) and Karl, who has autism, are on the school's soccer team. Their team was one of the best teams in the country and they competed in tournaments almost every month.

With the health/mental problems they both have, it doesn't always mean easy sailing. So, they took comfort in each other when one was in a slump.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

Sapnap stared at herself in the mirror, tears soaking into her sweater's sleeves. She cupped her boobs and pressed down, watching as they didn't fully disappear. She felt something wrong every time she wore a revealing outfit, every time someone called her a girl, every time someone even compared her to something feminine.

His parents said she was confused. They said he wasn't a boy. He was only a freshman, so what did he know? As Sapnap looked at himself again, haired pulled back in a pony tail and covered with a hat.

But, that was years ago. He was a junior now. He had short hair and he had a binder. No one knew him by his deadname, nor by she/her pronouns. This resulted in no one going over to his house though, but that was okay. He just went over to theirs and kept his personal life a secret.

"Dream! Get your ass over here!" Sapnap grasped onto his shoulders from behind, jumping onto his back. Dream was quick to hold him up, smiling when Sapnap put his hands over his eyes. Sapnap was able to pull him down onto the grassy field, giggling when his back hit the dirt. Dream let out a groan before flipping them over so he had Sapnap in a headlock. Sapnap tried to get out of, but he fell limp, giving up. Dream laughed and helped him up.

Sapnap didn't get up right away though, being sent into a coughing fit. Dream's face dropped as he quickly ran to Sapnap's gym bag and pulled out his asthma inhaler. He stuck one end into his mouth and forced him to swallow the air the small device was giving him. Sapnap looked up and smiled after a bit, hopping up and patting the worried boy on the back.

"C'mon! Let's go warm up!" Sapnap skipped towards the soccer balls, always shocking Dream how quickly he recovered from an asthma attack. He grabbed one of the soccer balls and kicked it towards the blonde. Dream flipped it into the air, kicking it with the back of his ankle back to Sapnap.

After a while, the whistle blew and they had to put their soccer balls up. The whole team crowded around the coach, waiting for instruction. Dream made his way to the goal post, strapping on his gloves. They usually started with a scrimmage before practice, forcing the A and B Team to both practice.

Each team usually stayed on each team, unless they need replacement. Neither really talked to each other either.

Team A is more popular than the other, especially since they have Dream, Karl, Sam, Boomer, Bad, Tommy, Ranboo, Tina, and Callahan. Team B isn't as cool, but they are still well known in the school as being on the soccer team. Grian, Scar, Etho, Joel, Tango, BDubs, Cub, Gem, Impulse, Ren, and Cleo aren't the worst players and still definitely made cut.

Sapnap and Ren played for the kickoff, Sapnap winning. Sapnap kicked it to another player and the scrimmage was off.

Chapter Text

Sapnap pulled off his shirt, pulling down his binder after. Everyone on the soccer team knew Sapnap was trans, and didn't care that he changed in the boy's locker room. Sapnap just liked being in there and changing last instead of in front of people. Dream turned around once Sapnap said it was okay and he had his hoodie and sweatpants on.

"Dream, I had an idea. You know the frisbee team? I wanna pull a prank on them," Sapnap whined, pulling on Dream's sleeve. He rolled his eyes and nodded.

"What's the plan?" Dream grabbed his backpack and threw it over his shoulders. He grabbed Sapnap's bag too, throwing it over his other shoulder.

"I was thinking, they were making fun of us for sucking at making goals. What if we get the practice soccer ball that your unable to kick very far and bet them for something?"

"Like cheerleading at our first game next weekend? During halftime?" Dream started getting excited, realizing what could all happen if the frisbee team agreed to this.

"Yes! This is why we're best friends!" Sapnap slapped Dream's shoulder, smiling widely. They raced to Dream and Sapnap's cars. Sapnap's was a simple red truck that was rusted around the wheels. Dream's was much nicer, a 2018 black GMC.

(-8-)

Sapnap was home a few minutes later, throwing his bag into the hallway closet. He flopped down onto his bed and decided to go to bed early, throwing his phone onto his bedside table. He heard the buzz of his phone, but didn't hear the ring, so it wasn't important enough to check. As he drifted to sleep, all he heard was his going off time and time again.

(-8-)

When he woke the next morning, he realized the bus would be coming any minute, so instead of laying on his phone, he got changed and didn't check it until after he got on the bus. He was met with an array of messages, all of which didn't make sense to his meddled mind.

Unknown Number

Sapnap???
What is this group chat I got added to???
Sapnap??
Answer me please!!!

He just shook his head, unable to comprehend why an unknown number would know his name, but as he went to his other messages, he saw he got added to a new group chat. The name was simple: Wakerson Soccer Team. Sapnap shoved his phone into his pocket and listened to the music he had blasting through his headphones.

When he walked into his first hour class, he was met with an ecstatic Dream, bouncing up and down with excitement. Sapnap's energy instantly raised when he saw the boy, matching his aura.

"What's up, dude?" Sapnap grabbed his arms and swung them back and forth, waiting for a response.

"You know that plan you had to prank the frisbee team and force them to cheer at our first game? Well, I may or may not have just set it up. One guy on the frisbee team babysits my sister when I have practice, and he likes cheering. He said he would be down either way. So, now we're doing it after school!"

"Really? Wow! You put a lot of thought into this! This'll be great, man!" Sapnap patted him on the shoulder, smiling widely. Dream smiled back and sat down, Sapnap following suit. They didn't have any classes together, other than history, PE, and their free period, but they hang out after school during practice, so the relationship is never strained between them.

The teacher walked into the room as the bell rang, basically telling them to get ready for class. Dream and Sapnap continued to make eye contact throughout the lesson, laughing at the others' stupidity.

When the bell rang for their lesson to be over, Sapnap was the first one out of the room, running up the stairs to his locker, Dream right on his tail. They had free period next and decided to go to a small Asian restaurant for an early lunch.

One of Dream's friends, Callahan, always followed them around and almost never spoke a word, especially to Sapnap. He was odd, that's for sure. He got on Sapnap's nerves, too. He didn't know why, but as soon as he had to talk to him, he got annoyed. He didn't cause issues though, so Sapnap pushed his jealousy away and decided to just enjoy lunch with his best friend.

"What are you thinking about getting?" Dream asked, poking Sapnap's cheek to get his attention. He blinked his yes a few times before processing what he said.

"Oh! Probably the shrimp shumai and a coconut milk Boba. What about you?" Sapnap pulled his credit card out of the back of his phone case, ready to walking into the shop and order.

"I'll probably get the gyoza and coffee Boba tea," Dream said, pulling the door open for the other two.

The restaurant was nice; LED light trailing the tops and bottoms of walls and the counters, giving a gentle glow of color to the shop, popular hits playing moderately loud on the speakers, counters filled to the brim with different games that were free for public use. Sapnap loved the aesthetics of the place and always looked forward to coming here for that reason.

Dream ordered for the three of them, Callahan saying in a shaky voice his order. The lady at the counter looked bored taking their order, but handed them their ticket after Sapnap payed with his card.

They sat at one of the booths at the back of the store, waiting for their number to be called. Dream leaned his head down onto Sapnap's shoulder, yawning quietly. Sapnap looked at his phone and watched the Instagram reels that flew by as he swiped.

"Seventy-two?!" The worker yelled, starling them both. Sapnap stood up and grabbed the bag and put it on his wrists, along with grabbing chopsticks, putting them in his pocket. He grabbed the three drinks and carried them back to the table, handing out the straws that came with.

They stabbed the plastic that was on the top of the drink and left, leaving money in the tip jar as they did so. The taste of coconut filled Sapnap's taste buds as they walked back to the school. He chewed on one of the tapioca pearls while walking up the two flights of stairs he needs to to get to his locker. The bell still hadn't rang for lunch, so they hung out upstairs and played random games while they waited for the tone to play.

(-8-)

It wasn't long until it did ring, slightly startling them both, too lost in their own word. Their school didn't have a cafeteria and students were free to do whatever they liked with their time until their next class. Sapnap and Dream grabbed their lunches that they got from the Asian food place and walked down the stairs again.

"Hey, my man!" Punz waved over to them from the spot on the picnic table he was sitting on with the rest of the soccer team. Sapnap and Dream both smiled, walking over and sitting down. He opened up his box of food and began eating, a smile clear on his face while Punz talked about how the history teacher made fun of a student in Punz's class today.

Punz and Sapnap were close, definitely closer than some people were on the team. They would even consider themselves best friends, though that slot is taken by Dream. They would be closer, that's for sure, if Dream wasn't in the picture.

They all fell into a loud conversation, laughing along to whatever stupid joke was said or shocked by whatever rumor was going around, until-

"Dude? Why were you ignoring my messages?" Karl approached the table, eyes focused on Sapnap. Sapnap just raised an eyebrow, staring directly at him, as well.

"I'm not sure what you- Oh." He unlocked his phone and realized that the unknown number that was texting him was probably the brunet standing directly in front of him. "Sorry, man. I don't know how you got my number, but I didn't mean to ignore you, I guess."

That wasn't good enough for Karl, apparently. The boy was fuming. The tops of his ears bright red, along with his cheeks being dusted in a light blush as well.

"'Sorry, man'? That's all I get? Why did I get added to the stupid soccer group chat? I'm not in soccer, if you couldn't already figure that out!"

"I didn't make the group chat, dude. Calm down- God. Dream created it. If you have a problem, ask him." Sapnap turned his attention back to his food, blocking the boy mentally out of his head.

"Wait, you don't even have my number saved? I have yours saved for the group project we worked on last year! Why don't you have mine?" Karl's face of realization annoyed Sapnap, so he just sent over a glare.

"Hmm, I wonder. Why wouldn't I want to save a number of someone who would probably annoy the shit out of me, like they're doing right now." Sapnap rolled his eyes, and bit into one of the shrimp shumai pieces.

"Wait- Why are you added to the group chat? I only added soccer people." Dream perked up, unsure of why this was such a big deal in the first place, but also confused.

"Wait, there's a soccer group chat and I wasn't invited?" Scar asked, turning his head to the side.

"Wait, what's your number?" Dream asked, flipping open a notebook he carried everywhere with him.

"555-208-2287."

"Oh, fuck. I see what happened. When I asked for your number, Scar, I also had Karl's written down for a Literature project we're doing. Sorry, man. I'll add you tonight. Karl, you're free to leave or stay. I don't care either or."

"Okay, thank you, Dream." Karl offered a smile before walking off. Sapnap let out a groan, anger present. Dream decided to ignore it and throw away his and Sapnap's trash.

Even after the bell rang, Sapnap was still in a bad mood. He didn't really know why, but it got worse throughout the day. He forgot his hoodie in his locker and he doesn't have time to grab  it until after school. He could feel his dysphoria getting worse, which stressed him out. He hates this feeling. He felt like everyone can see his binder straps, and he didn't have his hoodie to hide in.

As he crossed his arms over his chest, Dream looked over and saw this happen. He quickly took his hoodie off and handed it to him, now only in a white tank top. "No, you don't need to-"

"Take it. I won't need it." Sapnap hid his smile, sliding it on and saying good bye to Dream as he walked into his math room.

"New seats!" The teacher says once the bell rings. Everyone groaned and grabbed their stuff, standing at the front of the classroom waiting for their name to be called. "Sapnap, go sit over there."

The seat was at the circle table on the middle left side of the room. Whoever he sat by, he would be very close to them. As he waited, he pulled out his phone, scrolling through Spotify.

"Karl, you'll be sitting next to Sapnap." Sapnap's head shot up, a disgusted look on his face igniting.

Karl glared at him and sat down. Their knees touched with how close they were. He pulled his knee away as best as he could, but it hurt to hold them together for so long, so he just relaxed his legs and let them touch.

As he pulled out his calculator and notebook, he saw Karl do the same. The older brunet had a dinosaur folder and notebook, along with a dinosaur sweater on.

"You like dinosaurs, huh?" Sapnap asked, watching as he also pulled out pens that had dinosaur toppers on them.

"Whatever. I like them. Shut up." Sapnap threw his hands up in surrender. Karl flipped him off and wrote the date on the tops of his notes.

09/16/22

Karl's notes were messy and Sapnap didn't see the point in taking them if you couldn't even read what it said, but he didn't say anything, not in the mood to get in a fight.

(-8-)

Sapnap rushed to his locker and grabbed his stuff, running out of the school and to the soccer field. Dream was right on his tail, giggling at the thought of what was going to happen.

The frisbee team was a little late, but when every person on the team arrived, chaos ensued. It wasn't a huge team, most people wanting to join soccer instead, and you can only do one sport because their county adopted the Japanese way of running sports. Instead of having a season for a sport, they played all school year and compete in brackets all year round.

As it was stated, the team was small, just hardly having enough people to have a team. The only people on the team were kids named George, Tubbo, Wilbur, Ant, Velvet, Foolish, Ponk, Niki, Quackity, and, of course, because the world is against him, Karl. He hoped this plan worked, just so he had to face the embarrassment of the whole school watching them cheerlead.

"So, everyone agrees to this deal?" All of the team nods there heads and breaks out into a loud whisper. "Have you guys picked who's kicking? You have three tries, so three people!"

George, Quackity, and Karl all got off of the bleachers and grabbed the ball from Dream. Karl spun it on his finger until the three stood at the 44 yards line. Karl handed the ball to Quackity and watched as he threw it on the ground. Sapnap had made sure the practice ball was turned on, positively sure that this plan couldn't go wrong.

Quackity went first, easily being the worst out of the three. He obviously missed, rolling his eyes and flipping off the ball before walking back to the bleachers, cheering loudly for George and Karl. George missed, just like Quackity, getting just as upset. He clenched his fists at his sides, sittig down hard on the cool metal.

Finally, it was Karl's turn. His and Sapnap made eye contact before looking away and offering a disgusted look. Sapnap rolled his eyes and crossed his arms, looking smug.

Of course, he missed. Sapnap had to stifle a laugh at how upset he looked when he missed the goal. If he had better aim, it probably would have actually gone in. Karl didn't even look at the rest of the team as he took off walking, not even sparing Sapnap a second glance.
