"Oh, baby, baby, don't you want a man like me?
Oh, baby, baby, I'm just as sweet as anybody could be
Oh, baby, baby, I want to look to your eyes of blue
Oh, baby, baby, it's more than anybody else could do
Oh, baby, baby, you know when I see you walking down the street
Oh, baby, baby, well you looking good enough to eat
Oh, baby, baby, I don't believe I've tasted this before
Oh, baby, baby, I want it now and every mouthful more of you"
"Remind me again why we have to get ice cream today?" Carlos asks.
"Because it's mid-October. It's probably the last time we can get some before it gets too cold," TK says.
Sometimes Carlos laughs at the idea that TK was from New York.
"It's Texas, TK. It doesn't even get that cold here." Carlos is right. Winters in Autin are usually an average of the high in the 60s and the low in the 40s.
"That's what I thought last year. And then..." TK trails off. "I never got my last ice cream," He shrugs.
"A fluke," Carlos says. He tries not to think about how TK was so close to not getting his last ice cream, period. He lets out a small chuckle. "You almost died, and you're more concerned about the fact you didn't get ice cream before it got too cold?"
"I love ice cream," TK answers matter-of-factly.
Carlos sighs. "And I love you. Which is why I'm doing this in the first place." Carlos tries to avoid dairy, not for any real reason besides keeping his body in shape. He tends to cave more than he'd like, especially with TK's sweet tooth.
Today TK had decided to try one that used oat cream instead, so slightly healthier. Carlos isn't sure how that will turn out, but he's willing to try for his eager fiancé.
"What flavor do you plan on getting?" Carlos asks.
"Hmm," TK pretends to think, sticks his tongue out, and tilts his head, but something tells Carlos he already had the answer long before Carlos asked. "Mint Chocolate Chip," he announces as he sways excitedly.
"Mint Chocolate Chip?" Carlos repeats. You'd think TK would have an aversion to anything cold and top it off with a flavor that makes an already cold food feel colder.
"You have a problem with Mint Chocolate Chip?"
Carlos laughs. Yes, his sworn enemy. Honestly, Carlos never actually tried the flavor. He usually sticks to his favorites, but peppermint alone leaves a cold sensation in his mouth. He just never understood making that into ice cream.
"No, I just think out of all the flavors you could've chosen, you go with ...Mint Chocolate Chip."
"Alright, then. What are you going to choose?"
Carlos always has a list of flavors for decisions like this. He needs to be ready if a place doesn’t have his first flavor in mind, or his second, or third. The list usually goes in rank order, sometimes moving flavors down on the list if he’s had it recently. "I'll have to see what they have," he says.
"Oh, here," TK pulls out his phone and quickly flips to his internet tab. "Already have the full menu. They even show what's available in each store."
He hands his phone to Carlos. They walk as Carlos scrolls. They even have pictures for each flavor, in case people confuse rocky road with superman. They certainly look fancier than typical ice cream places. Most of them have something mixed in it. Carlos spots his flavor of choice and hands the phone back to TK.
"So... what'd you decided?"
"Coffee," Carlos smiles.
"Coffee?" TK questions, almost offended.
"Yes. Coffee."
"You drink coffee every day. You want coffee ice cream?"
"I like coffee ice cream. You brush your teeth every day. You want mint ice cream."
"It's mint chocolate chip. I don't brush my teeth with chocolate."
"And I don't put 5 pounds of sugar in my coffee."
TK nods, letting the ice cream argument go. "It probably tastes really good with the oat milk too."
Carlos smiles as he drapes his arm around TK and they walk like that the rest of the way until they get to the shop.
They order their ice cream; Carlos adds brownie bits to his with TK's recommendation. They make their way outside. It's not sweltering hot anymore, but still hot enough. TK's ice cream gets that memo within minutes of them walking out. Carlos watches in amusement as it drips all over TK's hands. Luckily Carlos grabbed enough napkins for three people.
"You know you're supposed to lick around it?" Carlos asks, trying not to laugh as TK struggles. "Make it smaller so that the cone creates a barrier..."
"I know how to eat ice cream, Carlos."
"And you're doing a great job," Carlos grins.
"Shut up," TK laughs.
TK finally gets the hang of it. They walk with him managing to avoid getting ice cream on the sidewalk.
"Wanna try?" TK asks, holding out his cone.
Mint and chocolate are already a sometimes tricky combination. Carlos isn't sure if he wants to add Coffee and brownie to the mixture. One look at TK's face, though, and he can't resist at least trying. He leans in to take a lick, and while he can't say for sure if TK slipped or it was on purpose, the ice cream ends up mostly on his nose instead.
TK gasps. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" He responds to Carlos' playful angry face. He tries to resist laughing as Carlos stretches his tongue out to lick the ice cream off.
TK squeezes his lips shut to try not to laugh.
Carlos nods. "Good. It's good. Here want to try mine."
TK shakes his head. "No, I think I'm good."
"Come on, Babe. It's so good," Carlos grins as he gets closer. He takes his ice cream and spreads it all over TK's mouth. Unlike TK’s intentions, Carlos can speak for himself. He didn't mean to make it that messy.
"Mmm," TK nods, not cracking a smile but accepting his fate. "Mhmm," he nods again, rubbing the coffee ice cream off his face and licking his finger.
Carlos can't resist. He starts laughing.
"Come here," he says as he grabs TK with his ice cream-less hand and pulls him into him. He licks some of the ice cream off for TK and kisses the side of his mouth. He can feel TK's smile widen with his lips and hears the soft giggle come from his mouth. He feels TK's hand on the back of his head, pulling him closer.
Carlos eyes an alleyway and pushes TK towards it, saving themselves from any curious onlookers. They make out between the two buildings until they feel their hands grow sticky with melted ice cream.
TK pulls away with Carlos' curious eye. Carlos is left dumbfounded when TK goes back to licking his ice cream.
"What? I don't want to waste a perfectly, good ice cream?"
Carlos laughs. If it wasn't before, Mint Chocolate Chip is now definitely his sworn enemy.
