True Love's Kiss

Summary:

Although Flowey is happy Frisk chose him to be her boyfriend, he cannot help but wonder if he's really the best guy for her. After Flowey expresses his concerns and tells Frisk she shouldn't be dating a flower, the human expresses her own way that he's wrong to think so.

Notes:

I originally wrote this story as a surprise gift for my friend Dragonsrule18, who really likes Underfell and the Flowisk/Friskriel ship in this AU. (Originally published on Deviantart in March 2022.)

Work Text:

Flowey sighed sadly as he watched from the window a happy couple pass by the house. The guy had his arm gently wrapped around his girlfriend, while the girl snuggled all too happily onto his embrace, her head resting on his shoulder. Both people had happy smiles on their faces as they were quietly talking about something that Flowey couldn't hear. "Lucky guys..." - the flower thought to himself, looking down.

Flowey wished he could have that kind of physical contact with his own girlfriend Frisk. Well, the two did cuddle in a way, but it was more his flower pot that was in her arms than he himself, and he usually needed to lean against her. Frisk gladly provided him the gentle contact he loved, but it mostly consisted of gentle stroking long Flowey's stem or on his head. Not that Flowey didn't enjoy the gentle touch, but it resembled more the kind of affection for pets, rather than for a love interest. And Flowey himself, he could stretch out his vines to give Frisk a "hug" of a sort, but he knew it wasn't nearly the same as one given by a person with actual limbs. He knew his touch just wasn't warm enough, and Frisk couldn't snuggle onto his embrace, like she did when her mother hugged her. The closest thing to it was Frisk gently rubbing her cheek against Flowey's soft yellow petals. This too was pleasant, and Frisk seemed to like the feeling, but...

Flowey sighed again, his small black eyes sad. Him agreeing to be Frisk's boyfriend was probably a mistake. The differences in hugs were only the top of the iceberg, and as time passed, Flowey got to realize this. Maybe Frisk didn't mean it too seriously when she told him she loved him and wanted them be datemates? She was yet too young, after all... Had she weighted all the implications of dating a flower? Flowey wasn't sure of that.

"Hey, Flowey! What's with the long face?" - Frisk's cheery voice pulled him out of his thoughts.

Here she was, looking at him with her usual bright smile, one that miraculously got unaltered despite all the deaths and terror she's gone through in the Underground. It made Flowey's damaged Soul ache more. It was probably time to have the serious talk with her. Taking a deep breath, he spoke up, averting his gaze:

"Frisk, I was thinking that... maybe you and I shouldn't be "dating" anymore..."

"W-What..?" - Frisk asked, clearly surprised by this sudden suggestion - "But I thought you and I have a good time together."

"We do, but... I realized you probably shouldn't be dating a flower." - Flowey said sadly, still barely daring to look at her in the eyes - "I mean, it can never work out on long term. You're yet so young, you'll yet meet so many cool boys... or girls... who'll be a better match."

"But I already chose you, Flowey!" - Frisk protested, getting upset - "I want you to be my boyfriend, not any of other guys out there!"

"You're saying so now, but then you'll see that you cannot get the best of dating with me!" - Flowey exclaimed with tears in his eyes - "I cannot do things like human boyfriends can... I cannot cuddle you properly, I can't go to stores to buy nice gifts for you, and... we, um, won't be able to be parents, y'know?"

Flowey had blushed at the latest statement. Frisk did too, a little bit, but she was more surprised by Flowey's self-deprication than anything. She reached out to him, to give a gentle pat on his flower head. Flowey stiffened some at the gesture.

"Flowey... Aren't you looking too far ahead? I haven't thought much of having kids yet, so..."

"But when you'll grow older, you will and it will be a problem!" - Flowey snapped, his voice quavering - "Just... Can we remain just good friends? Let's do it now, not later when it'll be more painful..."

Flowey was crying now, and Frisk's heart ached for him. The flower boy really loved this girl who once saved him from a life of darkness. The idea of them not being together like datemates hurt him, but more so did the idea of Frisk getting unhappy with him. And if he loved her, it was Flowey's job to look out for Frisk's happiness, even if it meant to let her go.

But Frisk, despite being young, knew what she wanted and that she could look after herself in the darkest hours. Sitting on her knees to be on Flowey's eye level, she spoke up with a serious tone.

"Flowey. I appreciate your concern, but I can make my choices and I'm not afraid to face its consequences. So what you cannot give me hugs or gifts like humans can? Your presence and your nice words are enough to make me feel warm inside. As for the kids thing... we'll get around the issue when the time comes, there's no need to plan that far ahead."

"But..."

"Not buts! When I said I liked you and wanted us to date, I meant it." - Frisk went on, her resolve apparent - "I wanted to date you because you're the best person in the world. You're more than just a flower, and I... I love you a lot!"

At those words, filled with determination, quickly leaned closer to Flowey's face and kissed him right on his lips. Flowey's face got red from blushing, and despite being startled by her action, closed his eyes and enjoyed the kiss. In the few weeks they've been dating, they have never kissed, this was the first time. And Flowey felt really warm inside, especially where his Soul was. The feeling was pleasant.

Then, the warmth spread in his whole vegetal body and got stronger. It felt a bit weird, making Flowey gasp in surprise. And the next thing he knew was that he somehow fell off the window sill and ended up on top of Frisk, who was staring at him with wide eyes, looking very surprised.

"What happened?" - Flowey breathed out.

"Flowey, you're..." - Frisk started, but wasn't sure how to tell him.

Flowey then realized his body felt different. When he saw that he was leaning on the floor with hands, he gasped and crambled off Frisk to look at himself. Instead of vines, he now had proper (and so familiar) white furry hands and feet. He then touched his face and he felt it be a goat-like face covered by soft fur. He looked in the mirror nearby to confirm his suspicion. His old body was back!

"I'm... I'm Asriel again..." - the goat boy breathed out - "I'm no longer a flower!"

Frisk squealed happily, then she said:

"I'm so glad for you! But I wonder how it happened?"

"When you... k-kissed me, I felt all warm inside..." - Asriel said with a soft blush - "It must've done something to my Soul."

"That makes sense." - Frisk smiled - "Love is a good source of determination and magic."

"That must be it... The love I felt from kiss must've fully healed my Soul, which likely restored my body."

"Looks like a True Love's Kiss is all you needed."

Frisk was blushing at her own words, and so was Asriel. Then, Frisk gently took Asriel's hand in hers and said:

"Well, now that you're no longer a flower... I hope you're done with your "I'm not good enough for you" mindset? And to clarify, I already thought you were good enough for me even as Flowey."

"Thanks, Frisk... Your words meant a lot to me, and... I love you a lot too." - Asriel said with a blush, averting is gaze.

"So there's nothing more to discuss then." - Frisk nodded, then she stood up and pulled Asriel up with her - "Now come on, let's go see Mom! She'll be so surprised to see your Asriel form!"

Asriel chuckled to himself, knowing Frisk was right. As the two kids went out of the room, Asriel couldn't help but smile to himself and squeeze Frisk's hand a bit. Right now, everything couldn't be more perfect.

Notes:

Just to clarify, the mom Frisk refers to isn't Toriel, but her human mom. Flowey was living in their home, where he felt safe after the horror of the Underground.
