Work Text:
Kaoru's body was heavy and limp with sleepiness. As he started to wake up, he noticed the empty spot next to him, which is where Rei was supposed to be. It made his lips curl into a small frown, as it made him feel lonely and cold; he knew Rei was typically busy and out of the house with his own duties, but it made Kaoru bored and lonely. Since he wasn't as much of a busybody like Rei was, it meant he'd be stuck at home by himself for hours until Rei was back. Kaoru didn't want to admit that he was attached to Rei, he just pushed those feelings down and tried to live normally, pretending he didn't love being around Rei as much as he did. Ah well, he was getting hungry, so he supposed it was time to get up. Once Kaoru got up, he noticed a small note stuck on the bed's headboard, pulling it off, he read it.
'Good morning my love, I'm sorry I left so early. I promise I'll be home soon with you soon. I love you. ♡ - Rei'
Kaoru smiled softly at the note, "Idiot..." He set it on the bedside table on his side for the time being, then he went into the closet to grab his clothes and change. As he looked at the shelves of clothes, another note was stuck to one of the shelves.
'You'll look pretty in any of these clothes, you always look so pretty. ♡ ♡'
Choosing to leave the note there for the time being while he changed, Kaoru blushed while he picked out an outfit to wear. Perhaps he would go on a walk and stop by his favorite café to help him kill time, so he would dress according to the cold weather outside. After he finished changing, Kaoru grabbed the note off the shelf and placed it with the note from earlier on the bedside table. Then, he walked into the bathroom to wash up and finish getting ready; he discovered another note waiting for him on the mirror.
'You're so beautiful, even with your messy hair after you sleep. It makes you look adorable, I wish I was there to ruffle it. :('
Kaoru stared at the note, then at his reflection. "God!" He pulled the note off and slapped it onto the counter, staring downward. His face was heating up, and he inhaled before looking back up at his appearance. Before he started the sink to wash up, he thought about if the note would get wet from water splashing, which worried him and caused him to move it back onto the mirror; then, he was able to start the sink and wash his face and brush his teeth. After doing those two things and drying off, he fixed his hair and grabbed the note off the mirror, taking it back to the table where he kept the rest.
Small growls came from Kaoru's stomach. Damn, looks like he really needed to eat. Kaoru walked into the kitchen, and was met with another note on the fridge.
'Make sure to eat well, my dear ~ ♡'
That note just made Kaoru smile like an idiot; he hated all the stupid, sweet things Rei said to him, although he wondered. Rei left him lots of cute notes around their apartment today, maybe to make Kaoru feel less lonely? He hoped Rei would do it more, as he loved the cute notes that were stuck everywhere. However, he'll need a better place to store the notes... If they got knocked off the bedside table or otherwise, he would be sad. He was just especially paranoid of losing the notes, so he'll have to figure out a safe spot for them. Brushing his thoughts aside, Kaoru opened the fridge and looked through it, there wasn't much food in there. Now, this gave him an excuse to go out and stop by the café. Whenever Rei is free, Kaoru would remind him that they need to buy groceries.
Prior to leaving, Kaoru stopped back in the bedroom to drop the fridge's note off and get his phone off the bedside table. He also grabbed his wallet and keys off the dresser where him and Rei kept their accessories and other things, spraying himself with some cologne while he was at it. Just to see how much money he had, Kaoru opened his wallet and was met with... a big amount of cash in it..?
"The hell...?" Kaoru pulled all the cash out and looked at it, seeing a note attached to the bill that was in the back of the stack.
'Buy yourself something nice for me, or go out and get a coffee. Do whatever you please with this money, just spoil yourself. Don't worry about paying me back or anything, I love you (again). :-)'
"Ah, of course," Kaoru pulled the note off and placed it with the others. A stupid smile was stuck to his face the whole time, including afterwards when he put his things into his pocket and when he went to put his shoes on before leaving. Kaoru made sure to turn off all the lights and he locked the door after himself as he left, taking a deep inhale of the fresh, cool air. He descended the stairs down to the bottom and walked away from the apartment complex and into the city, towards the shops. The air was crisp and cool, breezing through Kaoru's hair as he walked. Leaves crunched satisfyingly under his feet with each step; in general, the weather was amazing for a walk. It wasn't freezing cold, and it wasn't summertime to where it would be hot and painful to walk in. Kaoru enjoyed this weather, and he was sure that Rei enjoyed the cloudiness as it wouldn't bother him like the sun would.
The walk from the apartments to the café wasn't very long, and it allowed Kaoru to get his steps in for the day. His soul felt warmed as he stepped into the café, being greeted by the staff behind the counter. They knew him pretty well since he came in a lot, and the girl taking orders already knew what he wanted.
"Where's the friend you come with?" She asked curiously while waiting for Kaoru to pay, after giving him his pastry.
"Hm? Friend?" Kaoru was getting the money out and he glanced up at the girl.
"Oh, I see."
"See what?" Kaoru placed the money in the cash tray for the girl. She took it and put the money into the register, smiling kindly at Kaoru. It was nearly in a way that said 'I know you two are dating'. That's when everything clicked in Kaoru's head. Oh. He must've given it away when he questioned her calling Rei his friend.
"Nothing. Well, I hope you can bring him in again soon! I'd like to get to know him better!"
"I will, I'll try to bring him in when he isn't working. Maybe when we go to get groceries." If Kaoru hadn't given a lot away, he was just giving more away.
"Looking forward to it. Have a nice day, Kaoru!" The girl smiled widely, and Kaoru also wished her well and carried his pastry away to a table where he would sit and eat once he got his coffee. His coffee was made quickly, and he left his seat for a minute to grab the coffee and thank the staff. They were nice enough to even add all the fixings that Kaoru liked, such as cream and sugar, since he was such a regular. He sat back down and took his phone out, deciding to text Rei.
-
Rei
I think I accidentally gave away the fact that we're dating and living together to the girl working at the cafe
Also, we need groceries
I love you and I miss you
-
Much to Kaoru's surprise, it didn't take Rei very long to respond after Kaoru's texts.
-
Was she nice about it? We can get groceries tomorrow.
I love and miss you too. <3
Yeah, she was nice about it. She wants me to bring you in more, said she wants to get to know you better
We can stop by after groceries then.
Did you like my notes?
Yeah, they were really cute
When will you be home?
Soon, don't worry.
I have to go now, I only have a few more hours left here.
See you soon, my dear. I love you. <33
See you, I love you too

Kaoru put his phone down and looked out the window, smiling because of Rei's texts. As he ate his pastry and drank his coffee, Kaoru did some people watching; it was a good way to kill time, and sometimes he saw cool outfits and/or cute dogs. He wasn't sure how long he spent there, but he knew that it was at least over half an hour. Once finished, he threw all his trash away and lightly cleaned the table, thanking the staff before he left. Before he headed home, Kaoru decided to walk by a nearby park to help his food go down and to explore the scenery for a bit.
The park was lovely, there were lots of people with dogs today, and some cute birds throughout the park, especially in the pond. Children were also running around through the park, playing with their dog if they had one, or frolicking about in the green grass. Maybe Kaoru should ask Rei about getting a dog, or some sort of pet? They might have to move if that's the case, but that's a conversation for them to have another time. Kaoru walked by the pond to look at the ducks and other birds for a bit, then he started his walk home. This time, Kaoru listened to music with the earbuds that he kept in his coat's pocket, and that seemed to make the walk go faster, and he was home in no time. Still no sign of Rei...
Oh well, looks like there's some more time to kill. Finally, Kaoru can catch up on the show he never finished! After taking his shoes off and removing his earbuds, he took a seat on the couch and turned the TV on to play the recording of the show he had. All this ended up being useless, since Kaoru fell asleep, while the TV kept going in the background.
...
However many hours later, Kaoru was awoken by a warm hand on his face; he felt his cheek being stroked by the thumb. Kaoru immediately woke up and perked up when he saw it was Rei, who had his other hand behind his back.
"Rei-kun!! I missed you!" Kaoru got up from his seat and threw himself around Rei, still failing to realize what Rei had behind his back.
"I missed you too, but I picked a little surprise up for you."
"Huh? What is it?"
After Kaoru let go of Rei, Rei pulled out a bouquet of roses from behind his back. "I, of course, know how much you love roses, so I decided to pick some up for you~."
Kaoru took the flowers into his hands carefully, looking at them then at Rei. "You really didn't have to... You've already done so many sweet things for me today," Kaoru frowned at Rei, who kissed his cheek.
"Don't worry about it, my love. I'll keep spoiling you, I like seeing you happy."
"Stop it.. You're gonna make me cry, idiot.." Kaoru looked away from Rei, trying to blink away the tears that were welling up in his eyes. Rei wiped them away with his thumb.
"I love you so much."
"I love you more, also, can you please leave me more notes..? When you're not home..."
"Of course I will, I'll put them all over for you. Anything you want, my dear."
"I love you."
Rei held up to his promise, and Kaoru collected a little box full of notes from Rei. He very deeply cherished that box. (Not as much as he cherished Rei, of course. He can't let Rei know that.)
