Nikei jotted down another note of something Mikado had said. This was a major scoop, after all, and he refused to miss a moment of it by socializing.

    At least, that was his plan. When his sister Sora came near him with a frown on her face, it became pretty obvious pretty quickly that his plan wasn’t going to work.

    “Nikei, if you don’t talk to Sannoji, I will break every bone in your body,” she deadpanned. He rolled his eyes.

    “I’m kind of trying to write an article here,” he said.

    “Which is something you can do anytime. Besides, wouldn’t it be better if you actually talked to Sannoji in-person?” Sora said, wearing that satisfied grin that meant she thought she’d won.

    “I’ll get an interview later,” Nikei insisted. “It’s better to do stuff like that in private, it allows more professionalism.”

    “That’s your problem , idiot,” Sora said. “He’s your classmate. He should be your friend. Don’t think I missed the way you looked at him when we first got here.”

    Nikei’s face heated up. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

    Sora sighed. “Just talk to him? The way you’d talk to me? I know you’re really close with me and Void, but it’d be nice if you had some more friends. Please?”

    Nikei reluctantly put away his notebook.

Kanade crawled out of the bass case she’d hidden in, seeing the concerned faces of Yuri, Syobai, and Kokoro.

    “Hey,” she said flatly. The moment she stood up, Yuri barrelled over and gave her a huge hug.

    “Kanade, солнышко!” he said. Syobai snorted. (Ah, right, he spoke Russian.) Yuri backed off and held her face in his hands, staring at her. “You alright?”

    “What do you think?” she deadpanned.

    “Want a smoke?” Syobai asked, holding out a cigarette. Kokoro smacked his hand.

    “Do you want to talk about it?” she asked. Kanade shook her head.

    “Can we go to konbini and get slushies?” she asked.

    “Fine, so long as one of you guys is paying,” Syobai said.

    “I’ll pay!” Yuri shouted. Kanade smiled at him. Just at the beginning of the school year, he likely would have added a disclaimer that he wouldn’t be paying for a “disgusting man” like Syobai. He really had grown… all of them had.

    That was probably why it hurt so much that Hibiki was still the same person she’d been their entire lives. Kanade had reevaluated the entire way she saw herself, love, and the world. She’d stopped killing people, and began therapy even at the risk of being turned in.

    Hibiki? She was still just… Hibiki. Whiny, self-centered, insulting Hibiki.

    And Kanade didn’t know if her sister would ever change.

    “Kokoro, зайка, what’s your favorite slushie flavor?” Yuri asked as the four of them entered the Hope’s Peak Dormitory Parking Lot. She frowned.

    “I don’t really know,” she admitted. “I don’t think there are any I dislike, but that means there’s none I prefer either.”

    “Syobai, золотце!” Yuri shouted, running up to the aforementioned broker. “Do you have a favorite?”

    “Cherry,” Syobai said, pulling his cigarette out of his mouth for a moment to speak. Yuri gasped.

    “Cherry? Cherry ?”

    “What’s wrong with cherry?” Syobai asked.

    “It tastes like cough medicine,” Kokoro said. “Now I remember, that’s the flavor I dislike.”

Mikako is one of the first people to arrive in the library, preceded only by Tsurugi himself. Although she normally would spend time talking with her friends, today she feels more inclined to take a table near the back and observe.

    Yamato shows up a few minutes after her with a sheepish grin and an oil smear on his face, saying he got busy with a project and lost track of time. Mitch trails behind him, mumbling something about how much of a waste of time this is. Tsurugi immediately strong-arms them both into sitting as far away from the exit as possible, probably so they don’t sneak off.

    Kizuna, Ayame, and Akane all arrive together, holding hands and behaving rather lovey-dovey. It’d be annoying if it wasn’t so cute. Have they made it official yet? Mikako doesn’t think so.

    The Sunshine Quartet practically cartwheels into the room, their boundless energy dimmed only by the unfortunate reality of having to study. Kiyoka strikes up a conversation with Mikako for a few minutes, but soon enough a tussle between Haru and Satsuki calls her attention elsewhere.

    Kakeru and Kinji enter together, having a hushed but excited conversation. A few feet behind them, Kanata drags a disgruntled Rei in, holding a textbook in one hand. It’s likely meant for Mitch, although whether that’s for education or as a weapon is unclear.

    The last person to arrive is Utsuro. It’s always pretty obvious when they’re fronting, since they have a notorious resting bitch face. Yamato excitedly greets his partner, bringing them over to…

    “I don’t want this to take forever,” he begins, “so let’s make it quick.”

    “Basically, all meals are taken together, here at the hotel,” Shinji says. “If you don’t want to eat with the rest of Hope’s Peak, then you need teacher permission.” He then grins. “Luckily, I’m granting you permission preemptively. Just make sure I know what’s going on, yeah?”

    A chorus of agreements sound out.

    “Oh, also, we’re all going to the amusement park in the afternoon,” Shinji adds. “It’s mandatory. You can split off into your own little groups though.”
