Welcome to a special Year In Review edition of the AO3 Ship Stats!

This list shows the 101 pairing tags which had the greatest gain in total fanworks posted on Archive Of Our Own during the period 1 Jan 2022 - 1 Jan 2023. There are 52 M/M pairings, 17 F/M, 6 F/F, 21 Gen and 5 Other. (Please note that on AO3, ‘Name & Name’ with an ampersand indicates platonic or familial ‘Gen’ relationships, while ‘Name/Name’ with a slash is used for romantic and sexual pairings.)

Of the 206 names on the list, 31 belong to women, 4 to non-binary people, and 5 to characters of indeterminate gender, compared with 16, 0, and 7 in last year's list. In total there are 118 white characters, 63 Asian characters, 9 Latino characters, 4 Black characters, and 2 Indigenous characters, as well as 12 racially ambiguous characters. There are 76 total Characters of Colour, down from 80 in 2021's list.

Please note: some large pairings have fewer works than expected in this dataset and may have fallen off the list entirely. This is due to large numbers of works being deleted or privated. For more information please see the FAQ page.

Chapter 2: FAQ

For the majority of questions about these stats, please see the main FAQ for 2022. However, a few changes have been made to how race is categorised, which are explained below:

How is race determined?

In order to ensure that the "race" category is determined consistently, I will attempt to follow a hierarchy of evidence for each character's race. Lower categories of evidence will only be considered relevant if no clear evidence is available in any of the categories above.

Explicit statement of the character's race within canon (e.g. the character says “I'm Black.”)
The race of an actor physically embodying the character in a live-action medium like film or TV. (For theatre or musicals, both the original cast and the cast of any recorded version are considered equally canonical.)
Indirect evidence of race, such as the character's physical appearance, name, culture and voice acting cast. In the case of fantasy media, this includes fictional races which are shown to be analogous to real-world races.
Evidence from other adaptations of the work, considered in the same order as above.
Explicit Word of God (e.g. tweets or blog posts from the author) about the character's intended race.

The most popular fandom tag associated with each pairing will be considered the main source of canon for that pairing. If the most popular fandom tag is an “All Media Types” tag, or otherwise encompasses multiple works, then all official works inside that umbrella are equally canon. If multiple works conflict on a character's race - for instance, they are different races in different adaptations - the character will be listed as "Ambiguous".

"Ambiguous" also includes characters whose race is explicitly intended to be ambiguous, video game characters whose race can be chosen or changed by the player, and reader-insert or "You" characters. Please note that real people cannot be racially ambiguous. Characters with non-human skin tones such as blue or yellow are listed separately.

Please note that white characters who are ethnically Jewish are listed as white; this is due to the limitations of race as a categorisation system and the need to limit the number of categories listed. I am also following the usual American convention of not listing white heritage in the case of characters/people who are mixed race or fall into multiple racial categories, e.g. Barack Obama would be listed simply as "Black" not as both Black and white.

The following is a selection of characters whose racial categorisation in these stats is often questioned or debated. Please only comment about these characters if you feel you have sufficient evidence (see above) to argue for a change in race.

Why do some pairings have fewer works than expected?

When creating the "This Year" and "Year In Review" lists, I subtract the number of unlocked works which existed at the start of the time period from the number which existed at the end. This gives a result equal to the number of new works added in that time, minus any older works which have been deleted or locked. As a result, if a large number of older works are deleted or locked, the pairing may appear much lower on the list than expected, not appear at all, or even be listed with a negative number of "new works".

In December 2022, there was a concern about machine learning algorithms scraping data from AO3 fics (post). As a result, a large number of people in multiple fandoms deleted or privated their old works. Different fandoms had different levels of impact, although generally the more total works a fandom has, the more it was affected. As a result of this, many pairings which typically make the list did not, and there was a slight bias towards newer and smaller pairings.

Based on the (very rough) approximation that the rate of change from the main 2022 list would have continued for the period August-December, the following relationship tags were among the most affected:

However it should be noted that nearly all fandoms were affected to some extent - around 90% of the fastest-growing relationship tags from the main 2022 dataset saw a rate of growth lower than expected in the August-December period.

I do not intend to "correct" for this issue, as it is consistent with the way the stats have always been calculated. However if you are interested in the number of new works added without taking deleted or privated works into account, you can find this value by navigating to the pairings' works page, opening the "Filters" box, and entering the text created_at:["2022-01-01" TO "2023-01-01"] into the "Search within results" box (link to example).

  Thank you! Yeah, Steddie definitely won this year's fanfic lottery. 😂
  It's hard to answer that question - in the top 100, there are more F/F pairings (twice as many!), and the total number of fics has almost definitely increased, because AO3 is growing so generally there are more fics every year. But if you want to know whether F/F is increasing faster than other types of work - if the proportion of F/F fics is increasing - it would take a bit more research to work out. I don't have time to do that now, but it's an interesting question!

Thank you for putting this together. It's always good to be reminded how many fandoms I am completely unaware of but are huge! Noting the race of those involved is definitely illuminating - even knowing it was likely to be bad I wasn't expecting only 3 black/african characters.

  And yeah, the reason I started noting race was precisely because I was shocked by how stark the difference is on most of these lists, and I wanted more people to realise how few fandoms focus on Black characters.

I'm a bit bummed to see my favorite pairing drop out (especially since I only found them this year... and started writing fanfic because of them this year!). Circle of life, I guess. Nice to see so many F/F pairings though!

I have a question about Loid/Yor. It has new fics and total fics listed as the same number, but there’s fics for them from the manga that date back to 2019. I see that it’s like that for fandoms that started this year (like Our Flag Means Death), yet other ships new to list with fandoms before 2022 have larger totals than their new fics. Was this a mistake from data collection, or is there a designated reason for it?

  My stats program only gathers tags with more than 250 works, so if there were less than 250 fics from before Jan 1 2022, it wouldn't have been registered.

    Oh that makes sense.
    One thing I might add though is that Ranboo (both the irl streamer and dsmp character) uses he/they pronouns so probably shouldn’t be classed as a guy. (It’s a relatively new thing and therefore not used too much in fics (for example ranboo/tubbo is usually m/m for older fics) so it makes sense you wouldn’t have noticed.)
    I don’t want to offend u or come off as mean or anything so I hope I’m not doing that, just trying to help u be accurate:D

  Huh, weird. It definitely shouldn't be on the list according to my program - this year, the tag "Kara Danvers/Lena Luthor" had 19119 unlocked fics, while in the data from last January it had 17876 unlocked fics, so they had a net gain of only 1243. Generally this kind of issue is caused by people deleting or privating fics from before this year, although I agree it's very unusual for the discrepancy to be so big. Has there been any fandom drama in the last year that might have led to 700+ old fics getting removed?

    I'm not sure. I know I've seen more fics locked lately, although many are older.
    One reason is that we're using different metrics. I'm using just an ao3 search with the "created_at" search modifier (which I had to find on reddit bc ao3 does not list it on even its "secret" search modifiers page but it does seem to consistently work to find fics created between the dates you input). And I did while logged in, so grabbing locked fics too. Yours is more based on subtraction, so that may be why we ended up for w/different numbers. Fwiw, using my methodology (created_at:["2022-01-01" TO "2022-12-31"]):
    Steve/eddie has 14, 638 unlocked (about 50 less than you have)
    Sirius/remus has 9,200 unlocked added
    And just to do unlocked, kara/lena added 2k unlocked
    So, yeah, it seems that different methodologies are coming into here, and on some they are quite close (ie stranger things) while on others there is more of a gap.

    The issue where AI may have been using AO3 fics as training data was widely talked about in supercorp fandom. I'm not sure to what extent it was talked about in other fandoms, but it caused a lot of people to talk about locking down their fics.

  There are lots of repeat characters on the list - I always list by number of entries, not individual characters (which would be much more time-consuming to calculate!).
