'Haru slow down!' exclaimed Hiromi as her friend charged past on her white stallion.
'Come on Hiromi. It's not every day the traders from the East come to town. We can not arrive too late or we will miss out on all the good stuff.' grinned Haru.
'You know that my father doesn't really approve of me doing this.' sighed her best friend.
'I know, I am a bad influence.' giggled Haru 'Come on the sooner we get there the sooner we can head back and he probably won't even realise that we left the estate.'
Haru dropped back into a trot so that she could continue the rest of their short journey chatting companionably. Despite both being from noble households they were wearing dresses more associated with the common folk.
'So how are things with Tsuge?' asked Haru.
Hiromi blushed at the mention of the man who had been courting her for the last few months.
'That's Lord Tsuge Haru.' she giggled.
Haru rolled her eyes.
'Whatever. So how are things?' she pressed.
'We get on well and he visits very often but I don't see a ring on my finger any time soon.' sighed Hiromi 'He doesn't seem to be in a rush to get married but I guess we are both quite young. Plenty of time a head of us. What about you?'
Haru chuckled at what she deemed a ludicrous question.
'Don't be silly.' she smiled 'No noble male would show interest in me. If any do happen to approach the count it will be due to the lure of his fortune.'
'It's so wrong.' growled Hiromi 'You're great. They don't know what they are missing out on.'
Haru just shrugged her shoulders, it was something that she had grown to accept from a young age.
They were soon approaching the outskirts of the town and headed towards the marketplace. They steered their horses towards their usual place where for a few coins they could leave them to be cared for whilst they investigated the bustling market square.
'Ooh what's that?' asked Hiromi distracted by something shiny as soon as they had entered the market. She darted off into the crowd leaving Haru standing there. She chuckled to herself before following her friend.
'Well, well, well.' came a snide voice from behind her.
Haru turned to face the dark haired youth.
'If it isn't her majesty.' he mocked her.
'Machida.' Haru acknowledged through gritted teeth.
'How noble of you to come down from on high to mingle with the commoners.' he continued.
'It's so nice to see that you've grown up.' remarked Haru turning away to look for Hiromi.
'Hey I haven't finished.' he snarled.
Haru turned back to regard her former friend. From a young age they had run around and played together. Haru would never admit it to a soul but she had, had a childhood crush on the youth standing before her. For years she had besottedly followed him everywhere doing whatever he wanted to do. Everything changed though the day her mother met and then married her stepfather. That day Machida turned his back on her. He deemed her to be now too posh to hang around with them. He wasn't the only one to treat her in this manner but nowadays he was the only one who continued to make comments if she would ever unfortunately bump into him. The others just decided to ignore her and act as if she never existed.
'What is your fascination with me?' she asked.
Machida growled in response, stepping forward and towering over Haru in a threatening manner.
'I am not fascinated with you.' he said 'I wish you were never born.'
'Then leave me be.' replied Haru becoming irritated.
'I'm not finished with you.' snapped Machida his body language suggesting that he was about to hit her.
'Hey!' came a shout.
They both turned around in surprise to find Hiromi and Tsuge marching towards them.
'L-lady Hiromi, L-lord Tsuge.' stammered Machida ' I wasn't going to do anything, I was just teasing. Right Haru?'
Haru stared at him in disgust. Machida was quite happy to run her down as he deemed her a mongrel of society but when in the presence of what he believed as true nobles he trembled like a coward.
'Get out of here.' commanded Tsuge as he watched Hiromi lead her friend away.
Machida nodded before turning tail and scarpering.
'Thanks Tsuge.' muttered Haru.
'You're welcome but I shouldn't have to do that. He showed no respect for your status.' he sighed.
'If most noble families won't accept me then why should I expect it from a little rat like him.' replied Haru 'What are you doing here anyway?'
'Hiromi's father realised that you two were not just taking a ride around the estate. I happened to be passing by following a meeting with my father and thought I would call in. I offered to go out and help locate you both.' he explained.
'Uh oh, busted!' murmured Hiromi.
'How did you know that we would be here?' asked Haru before spotting the guilty look on her best friend's face 'Hiromi! This is supposed to be our secret.'
Haru's temper flared a little and she ended up grabbing a bolt of fabric from a nearby stall and chasing Hiromi around with it held high. The pair squealed as they ran around in circles. Tsuge sighed and rolled his eyes. Haru suddenly realised what she was doing and looked at the stallholder guiltily. The woman had been watching them unsure of how to get on of her wares back.
'I'm sorry.' apologised Haru 'I'll pay for this.'
Thankfully she had actually chosen a bolt of rather nice material. She was sure that she would be able to do something with it. Haru quickly paid for the item before turning to the others.
'I guess we had better head back.' she sighed.
Before Hiromi could respond there was a shout and a frightened whinny. The turned towards the noise. One of the local huntsmen's terriers had been snapping at the legs of a horse which had been tied up to a trading post. The frightened mare's eyes were rolling as she managed to break the rope holding her in place. She ran wildly in panic heading towards one of the market stalls. There was a man at the stall with his back to them. He seemed completely oblivious to the impending danger and more fascinated with the fish shaped cookies on sale.
'Hey!' called out Haru to warn him but he didn't appear to hear her.
If he didn't move he was going to get himself seriously injured or killed. Haru shoved the bolt of fabric into Hiromi's arms.
'Haru no!' she cried as she watched her friend run towards the stranger.
Haru managed to bowl him over just as the thundering hooves approached. They both went tumbling as the horse hit into the stall sending baked goods flying up in the air. Haru sat gasping for air as the young man fumbled to grab his overly large cap which had fallen and forced it back onto his head. The peak came low over his forehead.
'Well that was close.' panted Haru 'Are you okay?'
It was then the man turned his face to look at her and her breath caught in her throat on seeing his eyes. One pale blue and the other ruby red. The eyes of the royal line. Haru's own eyes widened in surprise. The crown prince placed a finger on his lips before standing up and offering her his hand. Still stunned into silence Haru took the offered hand.
'Thank you.' he said ' I owe you my life. If there is anything I can ever do for you please let me know.'
Haru was still speechless when Hiromi launched herself at her attempting to check her over for injuries.
'Honestly Haru, you really need to stop doing things like this.' she scolded 'Come on let's get you home and looked at.'
'Again, thank you.' said the prince 'and remember what I said.'
Haru nodded numbly as he pulled his cap further down over his eyes and melted into the crowd.
'Did I miss something?' asked Hiromi.
Haru shook her head. There was no way Hiromi would believe the truth behind the man she had just saved. Even Haru couldn't believe what had happened. What on earth was the crown prince doing in the marketplace? It appeared that she wasn't the only one who liked to escape the noble life.
Chapter Text
Count Tsuki turned over the envelope in his hands which had just been delivered by a royal messenger. He inspected the wax seal which displayed the royal crest. He sighed slightly wondering what his majesty the king wanted for these to be sent out to noble households so urgently. His advisors were mostly able to reign in his enthusiasm, to put it politely, but sometimes they could not dissuade him from a whim that he became fixated on. He cracked the wax seal before laying the paper out flat on the desk in front of him. He used his hand to smooth out the creases that folding had made. It appeared to be a royal proclamation. He carefully read through the details feeling his eyebrows edging higher and higher as he continued down the page. The count sat back with a groan dropping his head into one hand.
'She is not going to like this.' he muttered to himself.
As he was mentally preparing himself to break the news the door opened and the housekeeper came in with his afternoon newspaper.
'Martha would you be a dear and fetch Haru to me please.' asked the count 'There is something I need to discuss with her.'
'I believe she was out with Lady Hiromi this morning but she was due back by lunchtime so I will check her chambers.' she responded before leaving the room, closing the door behind her.
The count wondered what mischief those two girls could possibly have gotten up to. Both were fine young ladies with impeccable manners but Haru had fiery streak and Hiromi did nothing but encourage her friend to be wayward at times. Whilst thinking of some of the situations the pair had gotten themselves into he heard a knock on his study door.
'Come in.' he called as he turned to face the visitor.
'You called for me sir.' replied the young lady as she entered the room with a quick curtsy.
'Now Haru you know better than that.' he almost growled in response.
'Yes Father.' she laughed.
He wasn't her true father. Sadly he had passed away when she was only young and later her mother and the count had met, fallen in love and married changing Haru's world for ever. Her mother had been a humble seamstress and to suddenly be thrown into a world of nobility had taken some adjusting to. Although Haru and the count shared no blood they had a close bond. When her mother tragically passed from an illness and left her an orphan, she had been appointed the count's ward. As he has no children of his own and could never imaging marrying again he had declared Haru to be his heir which many decreed nothing short of scandalous.
'You know.' he said thoughtfully 'You are only really formal with me when you have done something that you know that I will disapprove of.'
He watched as the girl's cheeks pinkened guiltily.
'I just went to the market place with Hiromi.' she replied slowly attempted to bide her time 'Nothing bad happened.'
The count nodded but he couldn't help feeling that she was hiding something. He opened his mouth to reply to her but stopped when his eye was caught by the rip in Haru's skirt.
'Haru what happened to your clothing?' he asked.
The guilty girl's eyes trailed down to her own skirt and then back up at her father's face. She sighed. There was no way of hiding what had happened and besides she was pretty certain that news of what had occurred a few hours before would make it back to the estate eventually.
'Well you see.' she began 'We did honestly go to the market as we heard that there would be traders from the East there and we were curious to see what sort of items would be for sale. There was a disturbance. One of the huntsmen's terriers spooked a horse which had been tied up, but not very well, she broke the rope loose and ran towards the square. Most people realised what had happened and got out of the frightened animal's way but there was a man who was mesmerised at a stall. He somehow didn't hear the sound of hooves heading his way. I managed to push him out of danger but we both took a bit of a tumble and I guess that's when I ripped my skirt. It's not a problem though, I can easily fix it.'
The count chuckled. As his stepdaughter and ward she had access to his fortune but she still was as humble as her mother, preferring to mend what she referred to as her 'commoner clothing'.
'Very well but I expect you to change before dinner this evening. Lord Yianni, his wife and daughter will be joining us as we have business to discuss.'
Haru pulled a face.
'I know that you and Lady Violet do not see eye to eye but remember your manners.' he murmured.
'Yes Father.' she sighed.
'Now that's out of the way, please take a seat as there is something I need to discuss with you. I'm afraid that you are not going to like it.' he said.
'More than having Lady Violet for dinner?' she asked.
'I'm afraid so.' he nodded and he picked up the paper lying on his desk 'Earlier today were visited by a royal messenger. I suspect similar letters have been delivered to all noble houses and the chances of the contents being discussed at dinner are quite high.'
'What does it say?' asked Haru shifting forward in her seat.
'It's a proclamation from the king. I suspect that this has come about since the prince himself has as yet refused to begin courting, let alone consider marriage.' explained the count 'The proclamation states that all noble males must be married by the age of twenty five. It insists of the importance of marriage and producing a male heir so that the line of nobility shall continue. Every noble who this impacts much follow the proclamation. There are to be no exceptions.'
'So any noble gentleman approaching their twenty fifth birthday or older who has not been married before must do so as soon as possible?' asked Haru.
Her father nodded.
'The prince is barely twenty one.' responded Haru in confusion.
'Yes but with this proclamation out, the pool of eligible ladies will begin to dwindle and I think his majesty hopes this will kickstart the prince into finding a bride of his own before he ends up with a political match with someone he cannot abide.' replied the count. 'All young ladies aged eighteen plus who have not been married and are not currently engaged must also follow the proclamation.'
The count kept a watchful eye on Haru to gauge her reaction.
'Do we get any say in the matter?' she enquired keeping her tone neutral but feeling a fire burning inside her.
'Of course the head of the household will have some say as to whether they will accept the suitor or not. It is unfortunately how things work.' he sighed.
Haru's thoughts drifted to one particular noble who she tried to avoid like the plague. Duke Kibou was at least a good five years older than the count. He had never been married and saw himself as some sort of playboy. At the few events that Haru had been forced to attend she had often caught him leering at herself and Hiromi. A shudder ran down her spine. At least she knew her father would protect her from that fate but some of the nobles were in quite a bit of debt and would be most likely more than willing to marry off their daughters to the rich duke.
'How do they plan to carry out such a thing?' she asked.
'The proclamation doesn't state anything specific but I have heard of balls being used before.' he said.
'So it will be a beauty contest.' sighed Haru 'Based solely on our faces and nothing to do with our brains or skills.'
The count regarded her thoughtfully.
'Even though I can tell that you are not happy you are taken this better than I had anticipated.' he remarked.
Haru looked up at him with a sad smile.
'Although I would prefer a marriage based of love like you and Mother shared I am resigned to the fact that I am more likely to have an arranged marriage. I know not many nobles would want a misfit like myself as their bride but the lure of your title and fortune would be enough to bring some suitors knocking.' she sighed putting her hand up to prevent him from interrupting 'I am aware of at least two offers that have come in since I came of age and I am grateful for you turning them down.'
'Any offers that I have received have been ridiculous.' he growled 'You deserve the best.'
'Sadly not many feel that way but I am glad that I have you in my corner.' she smiled and leant forward to give the large man a short embrace 'What should I do now?'
'Get yourself ready for dinner, remember your manners and bite your tongue when they wane.' he replied.
'I meant about the proclamation.' giggled Haru softly and gently rolling her eyes. He knew her too well.
'Oh!' he replied looking flustered 'Well I guess sit back and await the invitations.'
Chapter Text
A couple of weeks later Haru and the count were enjoying breakfast together when one of the servants entered the room and brought a letter to the master. He accepted it from them before turning it over in his hands.
'Well here we are.' he said 'The first of the invitations.'
Haru looked up from buttering her toast. She was half curious and half terrified of the contents of the envelope.
'Who is it from?' she asked not recognising the elegant handwriting.
The count turned the envelope over again to inspect the wax seal.
'It's the Von Gikkingen family crest.' he replied.
'Von Gikkingen?' repeated Haru.
Yes, he's a baron. His estate isn't actually that far away from here. Only an hour or so by carriage.' explained her father.
'Have you met him?' asked Haru interested in hearing any information about the potential suitor. 'What is is he like?'
'I was friend's with his father and knew him as a boy. He's a hard worker. He took the title when he had barely turned eighteen after an accident that sadly took his father's life. He did do a tour of the towns not long after taking on the role. That would have been around the time your mother became really ill. You barely left her side so you would have missed all the fuss about that.' he informed her.
'If he only took on the role a few years ago he cannot be very old.' said Haru thoughtfully.
'He would be twenty four now but I presume his birthday is approaching soon if he is one of the first to react to the king's proclamation.' he replied.
Haru nodded. That would make him six years older than herself. That wouldn't be too bad and especially better than a potential husband like Duke Kibou. Again a shudder ran down her spine.
'Do you know much more about him?' she enquired.
'I'm afraid I haven't had much dealings with him directly. I've had more contact with his annoying head of house. I do know that he is rather closer with the prince and rumours suggest that he could become his top advisor when the prince finally takes the throne. I have also heard rumours that young ladies do have a tendency to throw themselves at him.' murmured the count.
Haru scowled a little. Just when he was starting to sound interesting.
'So what game does the baron wish to play?' she asked with a sigh.
The count cracked the wax and slid out the paper. He slowly read through the contents before he laughed loudly.
'Oh the king will not like this.' he mused.
'Why? What does it say?' frowned Haru.
'The king may be forcing his proclamation on the nobles but he wasn't specific on how they would acquire their brides. The baron is clearly a crafty one and if he is forced into finding a fiancee he will do it his own way.' he replied.
'Father don't be so mysterious.' giggled Haru ' What does it actually say?'
He smiled at her.
'In response to the king's proclamation all eligible ladies who have received this card are invited to the baron's estate. Over a few weeks period he gets to know them by setting tasks to find the most compatible one.' explained the count.
A look of horror settled on Haru's face.
'Several weeks trapped on an unfamiliar estate with many noble ladies!' she exclaimed 'I think I prefer the ball idea.'
'Come now Haru, I am not going to say no to this. Besides you will have Hiromi with you.' he replied.
'She'll be devastated to receive one of these.' whispered Haru 'She really had her heart set on Lord Tsuge.'
'Well if he was serious about her then he should have proposed.' sighed her father.
Haru nodded feeling sorry for her best friend. She stood up from the table having somewhat lost her appetite.
'Please send our acceptance to the invitation.' she said as she curtsied 'I had better go practice my polite smiles.'
The count watched as she left the room with concern in his black eyes. This would be one of the better invitations she would receive. The baron had his own wealth and title so had sent out the invitation out deeming her a true lady. From the scant interaction they had, had together Haru could do a lot worse than ending up with someone like him.
Haru was preparing her clothing for the trip to the baron's estate when there was a knock on her bedroom door. She opened it to find one of the younger servant girls standing there.
'Forgive me for disturbing you.' she apologised 'Lady Hiromi has just arrived and has said she needs to speak with you quite urgently.'
Haru hadn't even begun to assemble a response when a noise from downstairs distracted her.
'Harroooo!' shouted Hiromi.
'So much for being a lady.' sighed Haru which caused the servant to giggle 'I shall go and see her now before she disturbs the rest of the house.'
Haru moved quickly along the landing and headed down the stairs where she could see Hiromi bouncing up and down on the balls of her feet.
'My you are excitable this morning. Especially after all the moping you have been going through.' teased Haru.
'I will forgive you for being mean to me. I'm in too much of a good mood.' replied Hiromi as Haru stepped down from the last stair.
'Oh and why are you in such a good mood?' she asked.
Before Haru could react, Hiromi had launched across the open space to hug her and then brought her hand up close to Haru's nose. She almost when cross-eyed trying to focus. There sat on Hiromi's finger was a sparkling diamond.
'Tsuge proposed!' she squealed before dancing around the hallway dragging Haru along for the ride.
'W-when?' stammered Haru in surprise.
'Last night. He came over and we went for a romantic moonlit walk and he popped the question. He had been distraught since finding out I had received one of the Von Gikkingen invitations as he had been gearing himself up to propose.' explained Hiromi 'Of course I said yes.'
Haru blinked in surprise before smiling at her friend. She threw her arms around the other girl's shoulders.
'I'm so happy for you.' she replied 'I know this is what you truly wanted.'
'Oh it is.' her friend smiled 'Father is a little put out that he now has to write to the baron and apologise that I will no longer be attending but he does like Tsuge and gave his blessing. He thinks we are a good match.'
Haru kept a smile on her lips although her gut was twisting with realisation that in only two days she would now be travelling alone to the Von Gikkingen estate. She hadn't realised how much she had been relying on Hiromi's presence there. Haru shook her thoughts from her mind not wishing to put a damper on her friend's excitement. She truly was happy for Hiromi. She deserved to get everything she wanted out of life.
Before she knew it Haru was preparing to leave the manor. She was jangling with nerves. She had never really left the estate for such a long period of time before coming to live here. Also the thought of so many noble ladies frightened her. She was brought out of her thoughts by a large hand on her shoulder. She looked up at her father.
'I know that you are nervous.' he said squeezing her shoulder gently 'Just go and be your usual sweet self. Remember to mind your manners and please for me do not run away and keep a hold on your temper.'
She smiled at him although her eyes were glistening. She wouldn't let him down. Haru would try her best and if that wasn't good enough then so be it.
'Remember.' he continued 'If this doesn't work out you still have a home here with me.'
Haru nodded as a maid approached with her travelling cloak. Despite the journey only taking an hour her father had insisted that she take the family carriage rather than arrive on horseback. Haru would have happily ridden her white stallion Kaito there but he didn't want any reason for the other young ladies to pick on Haru from the moment she arrived. The count wasn't good at goodbyes and stood rubbing the back on his head. Haru stood on tip toe to throw her arms around the large man's neck.
'Be good and I'll see you soon.' he said gruffly patting her back awkwardly.
Haru nodded once again and stepped back. She then climbed into the carriage, taking her seat and looking back out of the window.
'I love you Father. I will see you soon.' she called.
As the driver cracked the reigns to make the horses move the count raised his hand to wave Haru off. He wished with all his might that she would be okay.
The journey was a pleasant one and Haru watched as the countryside rolled by. A warm breeze came through the carriage's open window bringing with it the scents of many blossoms as they passed. Time passed quickly and the sound of the carriage wheels rolling across gravel indicated they had entered the Von Gikkingen estate. Haru's nerves began to build again.
'I can do this.' she whispered to herself.
As they drew up to the front of the manor she was surprised to find a single man standing on the steps awaiting her arrival. He was dressed smartly and appeared to be one of the household staff. The driver had gotten down and had opened her door before offering her a hand to assist her out of the carriage. Haru swallowed noisily before taking the offered hand. The driver squeezed her hand encouragingly as he led her to the front of the manor. Haru cautiously eyed the tall dark haired man standing before her.
'Lady Haru.' he greeted with a bow 'Welcome to the Von Gikkingen estate. I am the head of the household staff. If you would please follow me and I will take you to your room and explain what will be happening during your stay. Also if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.'
Haru nodded her head suddenly feeling shy. So this was the man her father had called annoying. She wondered what sort of arguments the two of them had gotten into for him to be labelled so. He seemed nice enough to her.
'Thank you.' she said quietly 'Please lead the way.'
'Is it just the one bag?' he asked indicating her luggage with his head.
Haru nodded and the man broke into a large smile.
'I can see that you are going to fit in here already.' he said 'Please follow me and I hope you enjoy stay with us.'

Closing the door behind her and resting her forehead against the wood, Haru finally let the fake smile fall from her face. She was a fool. She had in a small way hoped that in this strange situation they found themselves in that the noble ladies would put aside their differences and bullying tactics even if it was to just come across nicer than they actually were. Sadly luck was not on her side. The snide comments were masked by sickly sweet smiles during their introduction social that evening. She had even found the ladies who she had never met before were easily swayed by the comments of others. How dare she be there. Didn't she know that she wasn't of noble blood. She was a filthy commoner after all. Haru felt suffocated by all the sly put-downs and barbed comments she had put up with for most of her life. A tear slid down her cheek. She missed Hiromi and wished she was here. She could really do with a friend right now. She felt so cut off in this strange place. She couldn't blame Lord Tsuge for proposing to her best friend. Hiromi was certainly a catch and she completely understood him not wishing to lose her in one of the king's bizarre games. Haru wiped a gloved hand across her cheek but as the tear soaked into the material it was quickly replaced by more. She slid down onto the floor and dropped her head into her hands. She may attempt to appear unphased in front of harsh criticism but her heart wasn't made of stone. Every mean comment hurt and there was only so much she could take. In the privacy of her own room she allowed herself to feel how she truly felt and sobs wracked her body.
Yuki smoothed down her uniform nervously. She had only recently joined the household staff and felt that she still needed to prove herself. The other staff had been welcoming and the baron appeared to be a good master. She had been allocated to act as a personal maid to one of the young ladies who would be staying at the manor for a time. The kitchen staff, who enjoyed a good gossip, had been discussing the noble ladies at length and some of the horror stories they claimed to have heard from the staff from some of the family estates. These had frightened Yuki. Toto had hushed them and attempted to calm her nerves saying most were probably vicious rumours. She didn't know anything about the young lady she had been assigned to. All that she knew was that she had requested to retire early from the ladies evening gathering complaining of a headache. Yuki had been instructed by the master of the house to take a pot of tea containing a blend which should help ease the young lady's discomfort. This was to be her big introduction to her temporary mistress. She would never admit it to a soul but she had been practicing in front of the mirror in her room.
Yuki took a deep breath and picked up the tray before heading out of the kitchen. Apart from the voices coming from the drawing room the rest of the manor appeared quite peaceful. Yuki walked down the quiet hallway towards her mistress' room. On arrival Yuki realised she hadn't mastered the art of knocking the door whilst holding a tray. She placed it carefully on the floor next to the door and straightened up to rap on the wood. As she was about to raise her hand a sudden noise stopped her in her tracks. She cocked her head to listen for further sounds from inside the room. She didn't need to wait long before she heard a sudden intake of breath followed by a choked sob. Yuki's eyes widened in horror and she brought her hand to her mouth. The young lady inside was crying! Yuki didn't know what to do in such a situation. She hadn't received any training. The young maid began to panic, she didn't want to fail such an important task but at the same time she didn't know what to do. Before she knew it she was running down the hallway away from the room. Maybe she could locate the housekeeper. She was a matronly woman who would probably have a better idea on how to deal with this. Yuki was so consumed by her thoughts that she wasn't concentrating on where she was going. She turned a corner too quickly and ran into someone's chest. Yuki nearly fell backwards but her wrist was caught in a gloved hand. She looked up into the eyes of the master of the house.
'Please don't fire me.' she squeaked.
The baron frowned at her.
'Why ever would I do such a thing?' he asked in confusion 'What happened Yuki?'
'I was taking the tea to the young lady who wasn't feeling well as instructed. When I got there, before I could knock, I heard a noise and realised that she was crying.' explained Yuki.
'She was crying?' replied the baron in alarm.
Yuki nodded her head sadly.
'I just didn't know what to do. I'm afraid I panicked and ran.' she sighed looking at the floor in embarrassment.
'Which young noble is it?' he asked.
'Lady Haru from Lord Tsuki's estate.' replied Yuki 'I was going to introduce myself so I don't know what she is like.'
The baron nodded thoughtfully.
'Try not to worry yourself, we will get this sorted. Why don't you head down to the drawing room and help out the staff there. From what I have heard the gathering is becoming a little raucous.'
Yuki nodded before turning to head towards the stairs leaving the lord to ponder on what to do about the other situation.
Haru had no idea how long she had been hiding the hurt deep inside her. It seemed that once she let go a little, the floodgates opened and she just couldn't hold back any longer. She wasn't sure how it was humanely possible to cry so much. Her head thumped and her heart ached. Not only was she feeling terrible from the combination of years of disdain, she now was gripped with homesickness. She had barely ever spent more than a night away from the estate. She knew that if she was in her normal frame of mind this wouldn't be an issue but she was so upset she couldn't think straight. Haru let out a sigh as the tears continued to fall. She wished she could cry prettily like Lady Violet. She knew that she would look horrendous after this. She sobbed loudly as she felt the self loathing kick in. Just as she was about to bury her face into her pillows again she heard a noise.
'Hello?' she called in a hoarse voice.
Haru really didn't want to see anyone now but her good manners would not allow her to stay silent. There was no reply to her call but she heard the noise again and realised it was scratching at her door. Curiosity more than anything forced Haru off her bed and towards the door. She hesitated at first before slowly opening the door and peaked out into the hallway. At first it appeared empty before she cast her eyes downwards to find an orange and cream tomcat with the most mesmerising green eyes.
'Oh.' she said wiping away a lingering tear from her own eye 'Hello'
In response the cat attempted to weave himself between her ankles, arching his back in greeting.
'Where did you come from?' asked Haru forgetting her woes. She had always had a fondness for cats but unfortunately her mother had been allergic to their fur. She leaned down to gently pet him on the head.
'You must be one of the baron's cats.' she continued as the cat seemed to raise his head and the mention of the lord.
'Would you like to come in? I would appreciate the company. I'm having a bit of a rough time at the moment.' she admitted.
The cat looked at her and turned as if to leave the room. Haru felt instantly deflated. Even the cat didn't want to be friends with her. It was then she realised that he was trying to pull something into her view. Haru crouched down in the doorway to see a small silver tray with a tea set resting on it. The fragrance of the tea was intriguing.
'Don't tell me you carried this all the way up by yourself.' she addressed the cat with a small smile.
He turned to look at her and seemed to purr in amusement..
Haru picked up the tray to carry it into the room and the cat happily trotted in after her. She placed the tray down on the small table and sat down on the chaise next to it. The cat hopped up next to her never taking his eyes off her. Haru poured herself a cup, wiping away the odd stray tear that tried to escape down her cheek. She breathed in the aroma before taking her first sip. She sat up straight in surprise.
'Wow that's the best tea I've ever tasted.' she remarked.
Again the cat seemed to purr in response to her statement. Haru reached out to pet him on the head again.
'I'm sure you must have better things to do than hang out with a miserable scrap like me.' sighed Haru 'Maybe chasing mice?'
The look of disgust the cat threw was almost comical.
'Or maybe not.' she giggled before sighing 'I don't really fit in here. To be honest I don't really fit in anywhere. I'm sure it won't be long until the baron sends me home. From what I overheard the others saying he would be able to have the cream of the crop. A fine pedigree to match his own not a mongrel like me'
Haru was surprised as a disgruntled growl came from the cat.
'You don't like it when I put myself down?' she asked, not expecting a response. She was shocked when the cat shook his head at her 'I try not to but sometimes it's hard.'
Haru lapsed into silence. The ginger and white tom seemed to be appraising her silently.
'I'm not usually this woeful. It's just everything came to a head today. I just couldn't deal with the snide comments anymore and being in a strange place I guess I felt more vulnerable than usual.' she sighed.
As she spoke she realised that she was waving the cup, that was still in her hand, around. Having assumed the cat was watching her she realised his eyes were actually following the movement of the cup.
'Do you like tea?' she asked which elicited an affirmative mewl in response.
Haru carefully placed her cup on the table before picking up the still warm pot and poured a small amount into the saucer. She placed it on the chaise between herself and the cat, trying not to spill any. His glowing green eyes looked at the saucer and back at Haru.
'Milk too?' she said in surprise 'My we are a gentleman of refined tastes aren't we.'
The cat began to purr up a storm again as Haru added a few drops of milk. She sat back as he happily lapped with gusto. Haru smiled almost forgetting her worries. Perhaps her father would allow her to get a kitten or two when she came back home. It would be nice to have a friend to speak to. She suspected once Hiromi was married she probably wouldn't get to see her as much. To have something living that she could talk to and love even if it couldn't reply would definitely be a lovely idea.
The sound of the grandfather clock chiming in the distance made the cat sit up in surprise as if the time had passed quicker than he had expected and that he needed to be elsewhere. He quickly jumped down before turning to look at Haru.
'Thank you for visiting.' she smiled 'I don't know if it's because of you, the tea or a combination but I do feel a lot better. Sleepy but better.'
The cat purred again in response before purposefully walking towards the door. Haru chuckled to herself, it was almost like he was the little master of the manor. She stood up to open the door to allow him on his way. Once again he leaned his body against her ankles before disappearing along the hallway.
'Goodnight.' called Haru softly.
She was feeling far more content now and after changing for bed she found that she was able to drift off into a peaceful slumber.
Chapter Text
After breakfast that morning the ladies had been gathered together and Toto explained what would be happening. They would be free to socialise in the mornings and evenings but the afternoons they would retire to their rooms and this would be the time the tasks would take place. What the tasks actually entailed was still kept under wraps. Also what would happen if they did not complete them to a satisfactory level. Many of the noble ladies had been a little disgruntled as they were planning on solely relying on their beauty and schooled charm. Haru had found it amusing that they would be playing an unknown game. She had already guessed that should they fail the task it would be a one way ticket straight back home. She had toyed with the idea of failing just to get away but her conscious wouldn't let her. Toto had also explained that they were to be allocated a personal maid during their time at the manor and that they must not wander the hallways unaccompanied. Haru was once again intrigued as to the reasoning behind that instruction.
After what had happened the night before Yuki found herself even more nervous about introducing herself to her temporary mistress. Considering the young lady had been crying Yuki suspected she was unlikely to be one of the horrible ones she had heard rumours about. It was now early afternoon and all the young ladies were in their assigned quarters. Yuki took a deep breath before approaching the door once again and knocking sharply on it.
'Come in.' called a voice from within.
It sounded like as pleasant voice and that allayed some of Yuki's fear. She entered and quietly closed the door behind her. Yuki curtsied before dipping her head.
'Greetings Lady Haru. I am your personal maid. If there is anything you require or need me to do please let me know.' said Yuki inspecting the carpet.
'You can look up you know.' came a soft voice.
Yuki slowly raised her head to look at her mistress. She was surprised to find that she was quite young, perhaps her own age or slightly younger. What struck her the most were her large eyes.
'It's lovely to meet you.' continued Haru watching Yuki's eyes widen in surprise 'I think it's best to warn you straight away that I'm a little different from the other noble ladies. I do hope that will not be an issue.'
Yuki shook her head although she wasn't sure what the lady meant.
'That will not be an issue Lady Haru.' she replied.
She heard Haru click her teeth in slight irritation and instantly worried that she had done something wrong.
'What is your name?' she asked.
Yuki looked up again in surprise. Apart from the baron and dowager baroness no other noble she had come in contact with had ever asked for her name. A lot of the time they barely acknowledged her existence.
'Y-Yuki Lady Haru.' she stammered out a reply.
Haru smiled.
'It's lovely to meet you Yuki. Now first thing you will learn about me is I detest formalities and do not like to be called by my title. If you need to please just call me Haru.' she explained.
'I couldn't do that.' gasped Yuki in horror. It was improper.
Haru sighed.
'I know I am a temporary guest here but if you could not call me Lady Haru even just in private I would appreciate it.' she replied 'If you are not comfortable with calling me by my first name is there something else you would prefer?'
Yuki thought for a moment. She never expected to be asked such a thing.
'If I were to call you Miss Haru would that be okay?' she asked timidly.
It was still a little formal but Haru knew she was putting a lot of pressure on the nervous young maid.
'Yes that will be fine.' she replied with a nod.
Yuki broke into a smile which Haru found startling. It really did light up her face and made her deep sapphire coloured eyes glow.
'Thank you Miss Haru.' she said 'I just came to introduce myself this afternoon. If you need anything just ask. Also if you need to go anywhere within the manor or explore the grounds I will accompany you.'
'Would you know if I have a task today?' asked Haru curiously.
'I'm afraid I haven't been informed.' replied Yuki apologetically 'I could try and find out for the future.'
'That's okay.' said Haru.
Suddenly there was a scream from somewhere within the manor which made both girls jump.
'What was that?' squeaked Yuki in surprise.
'Oh probably just one of the other nobles being dramatic about something.' murmured Haru 'Probably broke a nail or something.'
Yuki giggled. Miss Haru had certainly been right, she wasn't like the others.
'Would you like some tea?' she asked suddenly remembering the pot she had abandoned the night before.
Haru's eyes lit up.
'Will it be the same blend as last night?' she asked.
'Last night?' repeated Yuki in confusion.
'Hmm.' nodded Haru 'This is going to sound odd but when I was feeling unwell last night there was a scratch at the door and I found a cat with a tea tray.'
'A cat?' asked Yuki in surprise.
'Yes I assumed he was one of the baron's cats. Does the baron not have a cat then?' she enquired.
'I'm not overly sure. I haven't been working here very long.' confessed Yuki 'What did the cat look like?'
'He was orange and cream with green eyes.' replied Haru watching Yuki's eyes widen.
'I think I know the one.' she murmured 'The tea will be the master's blend again but he always says they are a little different each time so he cannot guarantee the flavour.'
'Well it's something I'm definitely willing to risk.' grinned Haru.
'I will head down to the kitchen and fetch you some right away.' declared Yuki as she quickly disappeared out of the door. She wondered what her master was up to. As she walked into the kitchen she found the cook consoling one of the other maids. Yuki cocked her head in a questioning manner but the cook juts shook her head and returned to fussing the upset girl.
Haru smiled. Her new maid may be a little green but she had potential. She may not have won their battle with formality but she was willing to accept a compromise. She should realise what she asked wasn't always easy for those trained to say 'Yes Sir or Ma'am'.
It wasn't long until Yuki reappeared with a tray. She was so proud of herself that she had managed to open the door without spilling a drop that she didn't mind her footing and tripped over the edge of the rug. Yuki adjusted herself quickly but a stream of hot liquid shot out of the spout landing on the young girl's wrist. She hissed and reared back in pain causing a teacup to fall from the tray landing on the bedroom floor and breaking into pieces.
'Oh no.' cried Yuki as she quickly placed the tray on a table and knelt down 'I'm so clumsy.'
She attempted to pick up the pieces but ended up cutting her hand. Now not only was her wrist stinging but now her hand was bleeding. Yuki had felt the young lady storm over and now hover over Yuki's fallen form. She tensed her shoulders awaiting the outrage. She quickly tried to scrabble the broken pieces together trying to ignore the pain.
'Leave it.' commanded Haru.
Yuki stopped with a wince. To her surprise she felt a hand on her upper arm encouraging her to stand and leading her to the bathroom. Haru quickly turned on the cold tap and pushed Yuki's wrist under the flow. The skin which had been caught was already looking pink and angry.
'Keep your wrist under the cold water for at least five minutes. Hopefully we can reduce the burn damage.' instructed Haru 'Now where can I find a first-aid kit?'
'There's one in the kitchen but you cannot leave the room alone.' whimpered Yuki.
'Haru clicked her teeth again at the rules but sighed in acceptance.
'Why are you doing this?' asked Yuki as Haru finally turned the water off and inspected her wrist.
'Doing what?' replied Haru looking up at her.
'Being so kind.' whispered Yuki.
'You hurt yourself. What I did was a normal reaction. Did you expect me to yell at you?' asked Haru in dismay.
Yuki felt a little guilty and nodded.
Haru sighed. She could understand the other girl's fear. Many of the ladies most probably would have shouted at her and certainly not helped. What Haru did she felt was the only humanely right reaction.
'Why don't you head down to the kitchen and get that sorted. Once you're done if you come back with two cups and we can share the tea. I'm sure the pot will keep the tea hot enough.' said Haru.
Yuki opened and closed her mouth like a goldfish.
'Look I know all about all of the staff on Father's estate. You are my personal maid whilst I'm here so I want to get to know you too.' continued Haru.
Yuki nodded again before heading out of the door in search of the first-aid kit. Toto was right, she really didn't have to worry. A smile crossed her lips, she really had struck lucky with her mistress.

As the last of the personal maids left the room closing the door behind them Baron slumped in his chair with a groan, his head finding it's way into his hands.
'Going well is it?' came a voice.
He looked up to see Toto waltzing into his study.
'Don't you ever knock?' muttered Baron.
Toto just grinned before taking a seat on the chair on the other side of the desk which had not long been vacated.
'Well?' he asked.
'These noble daughters are doing a good job of getting themselves sent home.' sighed Baron. He couldn't even refer to them as ladies as clearly some of them were not. 'Those who shout and especially the one who didn't have a problem with laying her hand on my staff are clearly not a good fit. I am not even going to give them a warning. They can be sent straight home.'
This was depressing. In response to the proclamation he had sent out twenty invitations to the closest eligible ladies. Four had quickly come back as rejections as the lady in question was now engaged. This was followed by a further one just a day before they were due to arrive. This meant fifteen still arrived to the estate. Now he was quickly dismissing five more due to their attitude and sense of entitlement.
'Well hopefully they will whittle down to some decent ladies.' replied Toto.
Baron nodded. He could only hope so.
'Yuki is ecstatic with her assigned lady.' said Toto 'She was so nervous and some of the others were winding her up.'
'That's good.' smiled Baron. Yuki was a rather nervous girl so if there was someone out there who could put her at ease he had hope.
'I just can't believe she is lardball's daughter.' laughed Toto leaning back on his chair.
'Who's daughter?' frowned Baron.
'Muta.' replied Toto before realising the nickname wasn't familiar to Baron 'I mean Count Tsuki. He was friends with my eldest brother. He was often visiting our place and I guess we just rubbed each other up the wrong way.'
'I don't think I have had much dealings with him.' murmured Baron.
'He was good friends with your father but since whenever the two estates have had any interactions I have dealt with it.' he responded tipping the chair further back onto its rear legs which made it rock precariously.
'Toto you are supposed to be my head of household staff could you please sit properly.' sighed Baron.
Toto grinned. The third son of a viscount he was actually a born noble himself. He wanted to be free as a bird and didn't want to settle down. He had begged to be sent to university first and once he graduated he wanted to see the world. Eventually he had been called back home. His father wanted to marry him off to a wealthy heiress. Although five years older Toto had met Baron at an event neither of them wished to be at but got on remarkably well. It wasn't long after this budding friendship developed Toto decided to leave home and join Baron's household. It was Toto's version of running away to join the circus. His family had been horrified and demanded him to come back home at once and accept the engagement. Toto refused and they had disowned him. At first it had hurt but Toto realised they had actually set him free. He was far more comfortable with this role as head of household staff even though he did take liberties due to his friendship with his master.
'So what is he like?' asked Baron breaking Toto from his thoughts.
'Who?' replied Toto.
'Count Tsuki.' sighed Baron.
'Oh. Large, loud, brash, sarcastic and very fun to fight with.' grinned Toto.
He watched as a look of concern began to cross Baron's face thinking about any offspring of such a man.
'But he is also warm hearted, married for love not duty, completed doted on his wife and fiercely protective towards his daughter.' continued 'Even though they don't share blood. She is the daughter of his wife but you wouldn't be able to tell the way they act with each other.'
'This is Yuki's mistress.' responded Baron wishing to doublecheck.
'Yes.' nodded Toto 'She was so kind to Yuki when she accidentally burnt herself.'
Baron thought back to night of the ladies first social evening. He realised that he had met the one that Toto had brought up. She had seemed so fragile but being brought up in the household of Count Tsuki it sounded like there was much more to her and Baron was intrigued and wanted to found out more about this Lady Haru.
'Will your mother be getting involved?' asked Toto.
Baron sighed and nodded.
Toto grinned. He absolutely adored the dowager baroness. She had treated him like a second son since he joined the household.
'I've explained to Mother my thoughts on this but she insists that she will meet with each lady.' said Baron rubbing the bridge of his nose 'She knows that they will all be schooled on how to act in front of other nobles especially elders. She won't listen to me.'
'What does she say?' asked Toto.
'That she will be able to pick out ones who are overdoing it and she wants to show an interest in my future.' replied Baron.
'She just wants you to be happy, you know that.' said Toto.
'I know.' responded Baron with a smile 'I just wished that I didn't have to go through this.'
'Who knows maybe your perfect girl is now under your nose.' grinned Toto.
'Wouldn't that be wonderful.' sighed Baron 'You had better go back to work. Please can you organise for those on that list to be returned to their home estates.'
Toto nodded as he took the list from Baron. He had to prepare himself quickly as he was pretty certain that he was about to be screamed at and cried on. Sometimes being the head of household staff wasn't so much fun.
Chapter Text
Haru sat at the table in her room turning a card over in her hands. The card was congratulating her on passing the first task. She was confused as she hadn't been aware of having undertaken a task let alone passing one. It was the afternoon so once again she was confined to her room as instructed. There didn't seem to be any structure as to when a task may occur which meant she could spend some afternoons in solitude or with Yuki. In all honesty Haru preferred her own company to that of the other nobles. She had been saddened that amongst all the ladies brought here she had no-one she could call an ally. They had proved that from the first night. They were all still too busy either being snotty or treating everyone like competition. At times like this she really missed Hiromi's company. She was unique it appeared for one of a true noble upbringing. Haru found that she was developing a better relationship with Yuki than the young ladies. The maid had not long been in with a pot of tea. Haru found the tea served here seemed to have a unique taste but she could never decide exactly what. Either way it was delicious.
There was a quiet knock at the door. Haru turned her head as she placed the card down on the table.
'Yes?' she enquired.
'Lady Haru.' came a male voice 'May I enquire as to if you are decent.'
Haru internally groaned at the formality she despised so much.
'Well it is early afternoon so I would have been surprised if I wasn't.' she responded.
A soft chuckling could be heard through the door.
'A number of the other young ladies tend to take an afternoon nap. I wanted to make sure that I wasn't disturbing you.' the voice continued.
'Oh.' she said in surprise 'but aren't we supposed to be alert in case we are called for a task?'
'Well yes, but it appears for some their beauty sleep takes priority.' he replied.
'Wouldn't you prefer to come in rather than continue this conversation through the door?' asked Haru.
She heard some shuffling on the other side of the door.
'I would.' came the voice finally 'but could you please promise me something.'
'Promise you what?' she asked curiously.
'Please do not scream.' he replied.
'Are you planning on testing our fears as a task?' she queried.
'No of course not.' he said 'Why what are you afraid of?'
She noted the curiosity in his voice.
'I have never been fond of heights and have a fear of falling from them.' she answered 'Will you come in. I promise not to scream about whatever you are worried about.'
More shuffling could be heard as if the man in the hallway was building up the courage to enter. Finally the door knob turned and the man let himself into the room, closing the door quietly behind him. He was dressed in a white shirt and grey trousers and Haru assumed that he must be a member of the household staff. What was noticeable was the man had a head of a cat. Haru's eyes had widened in surprise. She had heard rumours of the existence of those who were part man part beast. Never had she expected to meet one. He appeared to stand holding his breath with an orange tail swishing behind him in agitation. He slowly looked up at her and she was caught in his piercing green gaze.
'Greetings Lady Haru.' he said.
Haru stood a little stunned at first before her good manners kicked in.
'Greetings.' she replied 'How may I help you?'
The man chuckled again.
'I think you will find that is my line.' he replied.
'Are you a member of the household?' she asked.
He nodded.
'You are taking this rather well.' he commented.
'Taking what well?' she asked with a frown.
He motioned himself with his hands. Haru looked at him and then something he had said a little while before clicked.
'Did one of the others scream at your appearance?' she asked.
'Unfortunately not just one.' he sighed 'Several.'
Haru's eyebrows shot up in horror.
'I'm so sorry.' she replied.
'Why you didn't do anything wrong. You cannot be held responsible for the actions of others.' he said 'Not only did they scream at me, they called me all sorts of names. One even threw a book at me.'
He looked so forlorn that it pulled at Haru's heartstrings. Before she knew it she had crossed the small space between them and her arms around him in a hug. He stiffened in surprise and Haru realised how inappropriately she had acted and quickly released him. She stepped back, her cheeks flushing pink.
'I'm so sorry.' she stammered 'My mother was always telling me off for encroaching on other people's personal space. Not everyone likes to be touched and I should get permission before even attempting such an act. I'll probably be sent home for that.'
The man in front of her was standing watching her with flashes of different emotions passing through his eyes.
'It's been years since I felt an embrace like that.' he whispered 'Would you mind repeating?'
She looked up in surprise to find him still standing in front of her but now he was holding out a hand to her. She noticed that it was encased in a while cotton glove. Haru wouldn't dare admit it but she too craved the same thing. Since the passing of her mother hugs were too few and far between. Her father although he loved her was not a tactile man and Hiromi found her need for contact amusing. Haru finally stepped forward placing her hand in his. He smiled warmly and squeezed her hand before releasing it. He then slowly moved his arms to embrace her and Haru returned the action. It was funny that this practical stranger of a man felt so safe.
'You don't fear me.' he choked out.
Haru leaned back to look at him in confusion.
'Well as yet you have done nothing for me to fear. To fear you on your appearance alone would be ludicrous. Besides I happen to be rather fond of cats.' she smiled.
He chuckled at her before realising he was still holding her. He released his arms and stepped back. Haru sighed, another person who felt that she was too high in society for them to interact with her on another level for too long. Silence enveloped them. The longer is lasted the more awkward things became. Haru noticed his nose twitch and his eyes drifting across to the teapot sitting on the table.
'Would you like some?' she asked.
'Oh no I couldn't.' he replied quickly.
'Please do. I'm tired of taking tea with those ladies talking twaddle or just downright ignoring me. I get the feeling I could have a proper conversation with you.' pleaded Haru 'but of course if there is somewhere else you should be I understand.'
'No, I'm right where I should be. My role is to assess your suitability.' he explained.
'How am I doing so far?' asked Haru with a grin before shaking her head. 'Sorry I know it wouldn't be your place to answer such a question. I will call Yuki to bring another cup and saucer.'
Haru reached for the little bell she had been given. She detested summoning servants in such a way but she was confined to her room and with a manor this size it was probably sensible. She rang it as Yuki had instructed.
'Yuki?' he said in surprise.
'Yes, she is the maid I've been allocated during my stay here.' explained Haru 'I would presume you would be familiar with the other household staff.'
'Yes of course, I am just surprised you know her name.' he replied.
'Don't people tend to learn the staff's names?' asked Haru. She knew the name of all the staff in the count's household. To her it was a natural thing to do. Personally she felt that it built better relationships.
'Not really.' he admitted.
'What do they call you?' asked Haru in a horrified curiosity.
'Well if they refer to us at all it is generally oi you, boy or girl.' he sighed as he watched a look of disgust cross Haru's face.
'And the master?' she asked.
He cocked his head in a questioning manner.
'How does the master of the household address his staff?' she asked.
'Oh I see. Well I'm sure you will be pleased to know that he is of the same belief as yourself and he knows the names of all the members of his household.' he replied.
Haru smiled. She knew very little about this man who could be a potential suitor if she passed his tests. She was pleased that they had something in common. Haru still didn't understand this task business. A thought suddenly came to her.
'I have just realised that I didn't ask for you name.' she apologised.
He looked at her in surprise once again before a warm smile spread across his face.
'You may refer to me as B.' he replied.
'B?' she repeated 'I take it that this is a nickname?'
'Of sorts.' he replied.
They were interrupted by a quiet knock on the door and a blonde head popped into view. Yuki's eyes widened as she took in the occupants of the room.
'Ma.. Miss Haru' she exclaimed as she changed the direction on her eyeline.
'Yuki would you mind fetching an extra cup and saucer for me please. B will be joining me for tea.' explained Haru.
'B?' repeated Yuki at first before understanding crossed her face 'Oh yes of course Miss Haru. I will be back shortly.'
'Thank you Yuki.' smiled Haru watching the maid leave before turning back to B who had an intrigued look on his face 'What?'
'You allow her to call you Miss Haru?' he said in surprise.
'I actually tried to get her to call me just Haru but this was our compromise.' she giggled 'I hate formalities.'
B silently appraised the interesting young woman in front of him.
'You certainly are different.' he said finally.
'Oh you have no idea.' responded Haru with a smile.
Chapter Text
Once Yuki had returned with the extra cup and saucer they took their tea at the small table in the bay. The large window overlooking the walled garden. Beyond it appeared to be a maze which intrigued Haru. She wondered if this would be part of one of the tasks. She knew that she was rather open to suggestions but for some of the others it would lead to numerous meltdowns.
'So you don't like to be referred to as Lady Haru?' asked B finally bringing Haru out of her thoughts.
'No. I'm just Haru. I have never been one for formalities. Being called Lady makes me feel like such a fraud.' she sighed.
'Oh?' responded B in surprise.
'Your master is most likely aware of this but I'm not a true noble. The count is not my biological father.' she explained.
Haru was pretty certain if B had, had eyebrows they would have shot up.
'I'm not a lovechild or anything' she giggled ' My father was a soldier in the king's army and my mother a seamstress. We weren't peasants but we would definitely fall into the category of commoners. We lived happily in our little house. My father was moving through the ranks quite quickly and there were rumours that he would likely be the next chosen to join the King's Guard. This is a rather prestigious role and no-one below the middle class had ever been considered before. Unfortunately he was killed in an accident. I was four at the time. We were naturally devastated but to cover the death duties and continue to put food on the table my mother had to work even harder. This often meant that I was left to my own devices. I never minded, I knew that she was doing it for us. I would often hang around with the other town children. When I was six my mother met the count. She was becoming well known for her work and her presence had been requested by Count Tsuki for a commission piece. Of course the opportunity like this could not be missed. My mother called it love at first sight.' explained Haru with a fond smile 'Of course she felt torn. She had loved and mourned by father. The opportunity of a second chance of love was not something she had ever expected. They had a short courtship before they married. The count appeared to either be highly respect or feared by many of the noble families so my mother never faced prejudice. Unfortunately I wasn't so lucky.'
Haru sighed and took a sip from her cup.
'Why were you not so lucky?' asked B.
'Are you positive you have time for this?' she responded avoiding the question 'I wouldn't want you getting into trouble.'
'I assure you I will not be in trouble. Learning about all the young ladies is part of my role currently.' he replied smiling and taking a sip from his own cup 'Please continue.'
Haru sighed again. A bleak look in her eyes.
'From the moment the relationship between my mother and stepfather was announced I soon found attitudes changing towards me. The town children I grew up with decided I was too fancy to hang around with them anymore no matter how I insisted I hadn't changed. I did get into a couple of scraps over that.' she explained with a slight giggle 'Overnight I lost my only friends. My stepfather did his best to help. I was provided with classes in etiquette and access to lady-like activities. He tried to introduce me to the daughters of local nobles. As I said before the parents either feared or respected him too much to say anything about his marriage and his new wife but their daughters didn't have any qualms in putting me down. Making sure I knew my place and that I was nothing more than a filthy commoner who shouldn't be there.'
B growled angrily.
'I take it a number of these young ladies are currently also guests at the manor?' he asked.
Haru nodded.
'The first night here was really hard. I have never wanted to run away so much in my life. I promised Father I wouldn't disgrace him.' she replied.
'Well I for one am glad that you didn't run.' he said leaning over and squeezing her hand.
'Thank you.' she responded with a watery smile.
'So you haven't had a friend since you were six?' he asked.
Haru shook her head.
'I was friendly enough with my personal maids but it wasn't until I was ten that I met Hiromi. She is also a noble daughter but so different from all the others I have encountered. She had been born and raised abroad and had come for the first time to her father's estate where they decided to settle. She doesn't see me as below her. She's my best friend.' smiled Haru.
'Is she here as well?' asked B.
'No although in a way she has your master to thank for that.' giggled Haru 'She was being courted by the Lord of Yama. When the proclamation invitations came out from your master he finally proposed as he feared he would lose her.'
'I do believe many proposals occurred after the proclamation.' chuckled B.
'I guess it helped to reduce the number of ladies the poor baron will need to deal with due to the king.' she sighed.
B appraised her again, a strange look in his eye.
'You certainly are different.' he said again.
I know, I have been called strange and an oddity.' replied Haru 'My mother insisted that I'm just well rounded as I can see things from a different perspective.'
'Being different isn't a bad thing. It sometimes makes life more interesting.' he mused 'I notice that you refer to your mother in the past tense. I hope that I am not overstepping a boundary by asking about this.'
Haru shook her head but a tear still escaped. They always did when she thought about her mother's death.
'A few years ago my mother became desperately ill. Father had the finest doctors in the land come to see her but they couldn't save her.' she explained quietly 'After her death many expected him to throw me out onto the streets but he formally made me his ward and heir. As I said before it's why I feel like a fraud being called a lady.'
They both lapsed into thoughtful silence. Only when a clock out in the hallway struck the hour did they both jolt back to reality.
'I have taken up enough of your time.' said B as he stood up and bowed politely. 'I think I have enough information for the time being.'
'If I pass will I likely see you again?' asked Haru who had been surprised at how much she had enjoyed her time with the unusual cat man.
'I'm sure you shall.' he replied with a smile.
'B before you go if I speak to you again will you be able to tell me more about the baron?' she asked hessistantly.
'Do you not know about him?' he responded in surprise.
'Only snippets here and there.' she replied 'I don't even know what he looks like.'
'I will do my best but for now I hope you have a good evening Miss Haru.' he said as he turned to depart.
'Thank you.' she smiled 'I will.'
He let himself out into the hallway and shut the door behind him, He sighed to himself as he allowed his features to change. Well this one was certainly interesting that was for certain.
Out of the shadows stepped one of the king's advisors who had been instructed to oversee proceedings. He held a pen in one hand and a clipboard in the other. His rounded spectacles balanced almost at the end of his nose.
'Well?' he asked 'Another to be crossed off the list?'
'No. There is something different about this one.' replied the other man.
'You are aware that she is not actually of noble blood.' replied the advisor in surprise with barely hidden contempt.
'Yes she was fully open about her heritage.' he replied 'I think that is enough for today. Please could you make arrangements with Toto to send home those who have failed. I think I will retire before dinner.'
'Yes your lordship.' sighed the advisor as he watched the master of the manor stroll down the hallway, a contented smile on his lips.
Chapter Text
After returning to her room following breakfast Haru was searching for her embroidery hoop. As with most mornings she was expected to spend time with the other young ladies. Haru was not interested in the idle gossip which many of them seemed to live for. Not that any of them still chose to speak to her. She was far happier entertaining herself with her embroidery. As a daughter of a seamstress it was a craft she had picked up from watching her mother and she rather enjoyed. Haru had noticed a couple of the more vocal ladies appeared to be missing at breakfast. She wondered if they had taken to their bed with exhaustion over the changes to their normal routine. Haru found the hoop just as there was a knock on the door. Expecting it to be Yuki who would lead her down to the drawing room she called over her shoulder for her to come in. A polite cough caused her to spin around in surprise. In the open doorway stood a tall thin man. Haru recalled him from when she had first arrived. She assumed that he was some sort of butler.
'Excuse me my lady but you have a visitor.' he said with a slight bow.
Haru looked at him in surprise.
'A visitor?' she repeated 'Is it my father?'
'No my lady.' he replied with a shake of his head. It's the crown prince.'
'The prince!' she gasped bringing a hand to her mouth 'Are you certain he has come to see me?'
'Yes my lady he was pretty insistent. Now if you will follow me. As the other young ladies are in the drawing room we have led him to the library. If any of them found out the prince was in the house I fear there would be a riot.' he explained.
Haru giggled at the thought.
'Lead the way then. We must not keep the prince waiting.' she replied.
Toto nodded before turning to leave.
'Oh what is your name by the way?' she continued.
He spun around again in surprise almost knocking his beak like nose on the door frame.
'I'm T-Toto my lady.' he stammered.
'Hello Toto, I'm Haru.' she grinned.
'Yes Miss.' he responded.
Haru beamed at him. Clearly the household staff were talking about her dislike of formalities. Toto had pretty much given up her title as soon as he felt that she had given him permission. She followed him down the stairs and passed the drawing room where she could already hear the occupants twittering away like birds. She would need to thank the prince for allowing her to escape such monotony. Toto knocked on the library door before opening it.
'Miss Haru is here as requested your highness.' he announced her as Haru walked behind him and curtsied to the future monarch.
'It really is you.' the prince said.
Haru looked up in surprise to meet his eyes of fire and ice.
'It appears that I am not the only one who likes to escape now and then and mingle with the common folk at the market.' he continued 'Do not stand on ceremony, please take a seat. That will be all Toto.'
Toto bowed his head before leaving the room.
Haru looked at the prince again still in shock. Last time she had seen him he wore a cotton shirt with a waistcoat, trousers and that ridiculous cap. Now he sat in front of her in all his royal finery.
'What can I do for you, your highness?' she asked.
'I think you have done plenty already.' he smiled.
'I hope you were not too badly bruised from the tumble.' replied Haru.
'I was a little sore for a day or two but compared to what could have happened if that horse had crashed into me it is something I can easily cope with. You saved my life.' he said.
Haru's cheeks flamed at the statement.
'I hope your highness will not be offended if I were to say that I would have done that for anyone in danger.' she murmured.
'I know that. It was only afterwards when you saw my eyes did you realise who I was. It made me admire you more. It was a truly selfless act.' he smiled.
'May I ask why you have chosen to seek me out and also how did you find out who I was.' she asked curiously.
'Well your friend did call out your name before she berated you for such a foolish action.' explained the prince.
'My name is not unusual in my home town.' replied Haru.
'Yes I am aware of that.' he nodded 'It seems that you often perform selfless acts and this means that you are often the subject of town square gossip.'
Haru scowled at the thought before quickly rearranging her face to a more neutral look as she had been taught. The prince chuckled at her.
'You thanked me on the day. As I said then I didn't do it to be rewarded.' said Haru.
The prince sighed running a hand through his black hair.
'Yes I know and believe me I would have happily left it at that.' he groaned 'but my father heard about what happened and decided to get involved. He was the one who sent men out to try and track down information about you. At first it did indeed seem as if my life had been saved by a regular townsperson and his interest began to wane.'
'Let me guess a former friend and glory seeker decided to divulge information about me.' sighed Haru.
The prince nodded.
'I believe the person's name was Machida.' he replied.
Haru growled under her breath.
'What were the men told?' she asked.
'That you were a member of a noble household. That really peaked Father's interest. He was ready to grant you with what he deemed the greatest reward.' he explained.
'Oh and what would that be?' asked Haru curiously.
The prince looked awkward, his cheeks turning pink.
'Oh no no no.' gasped Haru in alarm 'Look I'm sure you are a really nice guy and all but that would be a really bad idea.'
'I am sure that you are very nice as well and please don't take offence but I don't wish to offer my hand in marriage to you.' he replied 'I'm looking for something real.'
'Well we both appear to be wishing for the same thing but well here I am.' sighed Haru gesturing the manor.
'You may be surprised but this has in one way saved you.' he replied.
'How so?' she asked.
'The king did not discover your identity until after his own proclamation forced Baron to send out those invitations to begin his own enforced search for a wife.' he said.
'So my future will either be at the side of a baron to satisfy the king's proclamation or at your side due to the king's insistence of a reward.' she groaned 'Sorry but I guess this isn't how I anticipated my life turning out. I was imagining a ball where we were all the attend and the noble who it was being hosted by would pretty much choose his bride of looks alone.'
'I think that is what my father anticipated but he hadn't locked down the rules so Baron had his own take on the proclamation. He like us, is not thrilled at being forced into this.' replied the prince.
'You sound like you know him quite well.' murmured Haru.
'We grew up together.' he smiled 'When I eventually take the throne I hope to have him as one of my advisors. He is a very trusted confidante.'
Haru was gaining additional respect for the baron she knew so little about.
'You called him Baron?' she replied.
'Yes he isn't fond of his given name so we call him that instead. I've used the nickname for so long I forget that he has another name.' explained the prince.
Haru mulled this over. She detested her own title and tried to play it down as much as possible wishing to be called by her given name alone where as the baron had the opposite issue and had turned his title on its head to replace his name where possible.
'What is his given name?' asked Haru.
'Sorry but that's for him to reveal.' he smiled 'Have you never met him?'
'Not that I recall. I never went to court with my father. I'm sure that it would most likely have been frowned upon. The most I was exposed to other young nobles were torturous tea parties and the odd ball I couldn't escape from. When he became the baron after his father's tragic accident Mother was really sick and I was busy helping to nurse her so I missed his tour. I don't even know what he looks like.'
The prince coughed to hide the laugh that was bubbling in his throat.
'I imagine he wishes most of the ladies he met were like you. He has had more issues than most with young ladies throwing themselves at him. It was why he devised this method of whittling down the numbers in the hope to find a noble woman he could at least tolerate for marriage.'
Haru opened her mouth to respond but was distracted as the door opened and Yuki came in carrying refreshments on a tray.
'Thank you Yuki.' smiled Haru.
Yuki placed the tray down on the table and looked up to smile at her current mistress. Her sapphire eyes went wide at the sight of the gentleman next to Haru. Yuki felt her cheeks go pink. Haru was amused to see both her maid and the prince staring at each other. Yuki was the first to break her gaze, curtsy whilst mumbling something before quickly escaping.
'Please excuse her.' giggled Haru 'She is a little shy.'
The prince was now looking at the door through which Yuki had beat a hasty exit.
'Will she be coming back?' he asked finally turning back to Haru.
'Possibly not.' she mused 'I'm likely to find her later curled up in a ball in embarrassment.'
'Oh.' replied the prince sounding disappointed.
Haru poured them tea looking at him in amusement. Was this what her mother had experienced with the count? She had said it felt like an instant connection.
'You know.' began Haru casually 'Yuki is my personal maid whilst I'm here. If you were to visit me again I could make sure she was present. It would probably be advisable that I did have a chaperone.'
The prince grinned at her understanding her meaning.
'I feel like we will become firm friends. From now on please call me Lune.' he replied 'I think Baron would be lucky to have someone like you in his life.'
The door suddenly opened again. Haru turned surprised that a sheepish Yuki would have returned so quickly but she let out a gasp when she discovered the person in the doorway was Lady Violet. Her eyes were almost bulging and her mouth opening and closing like a goldfish at the sight of Haru and the prince. She backed into the hallway and out of view. Haru and Lune looked at each other nervously.
'Prince Lune is here!' Violet screamed down the corridor.
At that moment all hell seemed to break loose. Suddenly a door from the other side of the library flew open and an incredibly flustered looking Toto strode in.
'Curse those women.' he muttered 'How hard is it to follow a simple rule of do not wander around the manor unescorted. I apologies your highness, if you will follow me I'll take you to Baron's study. Miss Haru please stay here until Yuki collects you.'
She nodded to Toto and inclined her head to Lune as he quickly stood up and followed the head of household staff out through the secret exit. Haru sat back bringing her cup to her lips. There was one thing that she could certainly say about this experience, it certainly wasn't boring!
Chapter Text
Haru almost hopped out of her chair when Yuki came to collect her from breakfast the next morning. She practically danced out of the room as they headed down the hallway.
'You're in a good mood this morning.' smiled Yuki.
'She's gone!' exclaimed Haru as she did a little twirl.
'Who has gone?' asked Yuki trying to hide her giggle behind her hand.
'Lady Violet.' grinned Haru happily twirling again 'After her rule breaking and the trouble that ensued yesterday she was asked to leave.'
'How do you know this?' queried the maid.
'Well I first noticed she wasn't at breakfast. I always need to keep an eye on her location if we're in the same room as I just cannot trust her. Then it turns out the gossip mill spread the rumour that myself and the crown prince are good friends despite the fact we've only met twice. Suddenly the ladies are being a lot nicer to me and the air of tension has evaporated.' mused Haru ' Don't worry I am not foolish enough to believe they have all actually had a change of heart. Some now believe they can get into the prince's good books if they are friendly with me. It does mean though that they no longer ignore me and have been including me in the conversation about the goings on at the manor.'
Yuki smiled. She hadn't seen her mistress this happy since she arrived. She had always been warm and smiling with her but to see her natural grin due to the fact her main bully was no longer around was almost magical. She was also pleased that Haru was smart enough to be wary of the other ladies sudden change of attitude towards her. Haru was still acting rather giddy when she stiffened slightly as she heard murmurings behind them. She still couldn't help but immediately assume that someone was talking about her. She turned to look at the group of ladies who were huddled together and realised she was not their focus.
'It's him isn't it?' one of them whispered.
Haru followed their collective gaze to just catch sight of the back of a golden haired main wearing a top hat turning the corner. She realised that he must be the elusive baron. She watched the group as they fluffed up their hair and rearranged their bodices before they quickly picked up their skirts to chase after the young noble. Their maids ran behind them desperately trying to stop them. Haru eyed them in amusement. From the information she had gleaned from his staff and Lune the baron seemed like a fair and kind man. She was beginning to realise that although she had been resigned to an arranged marriage in her future and the king's proclamation the idea of being chosen by the baron wasn't as bad as she anticipated. The brief glance of the man who had invited her to his manor had piqued her interest to know more about him.
'Yuki does the manor have a portrait gallery?' she asked.
'Yes of course.' she nodded 'It's on the first floor.'
'Would you mind taking me there? I think it is about time I see what these preening peacocks are getting their feathers ruffled over if I cannot yet meet the man in person.' replied Haru.
'Miss Haru!' spluttered Yuki with a laugh.
'What is the matter?' she asked.
'It's just that it is the first time I have really heard you sat something harsh about the other ladies.' explained Yuki.
'Ah.' replied Haru before giving her a naughty smile 'It may have been the first time that I said anything out loud but believe me I have been thinking it since day one. I am after all only human.'
Yuki laughed again as her mistress linked arms with her.
'Come on lead the way. I need to know if the baron really is what they make him out to be.' she grinned.
They climbed the stairs as they watched the maids, who had finally rounded up their wayward charges, herd them to the drawing room. Haru chuckled. She knew she would be back in that room soon but hopefully they would have finished their gushing by the time she returned.
Haru's heels clacked on the polished wooden floor as they entered the long gallery. There were many paintings going back generations of the Von Gikkingen family. Yuki guided her along to the more recent portraits. She stopped in front of one.
'The was the previous baron Von Gikkingen.' she explained.
Haru gazed at the portrait to look at the stoic looking man who had the same hair colour as the man she had caught a glance of. She read the small metal plate which had been added with his date of birth and death and was saddened. She knew that the current baron had taken over the role from a young age but she hadn't realised that his father was barely forty when he passed. She thought about her own mother's passing and just couldn't imagine having to take on such responsibility after a tragedy. She had barely been able to function for a number of weeks and her mother's death had come out of the blue. She felt compassion for the man and just how brave he must have been to continue in his father's footsteps and support his widowed mother.
'What was the previous baron like?' asked Haru.
'I wasn't working when he was in charge but I have heard from the other staff that he was a just and fair man and that he instilled the same philosophy on his son.' replied Yuki.
Haru's eyes gazed to the next painting which was a family portrait. In it the late baron was standing behind a chair in which his wife was sitting and their young son was standing beside her. Haru guessed he was around five in the painting. He was an adorable child. Even though it was just a painting they seemed a happy family. The next portrait had clearly been painted after the accident. The current baron appeared to be in his late teens. Haru could not feel the same warmth in this portrait despite the fact his hand rested on his mother's shoulder. The artist had been able to catch the pain and sorrow in their eyes.
'I believe that one was painted not long after the master's father's death, when he took on the role.' explained Yuki.
Haru nodded. The baron had certainly been a handsome youth. She was beginning to understand why he may need to fight the bolder young ladies off with a stick. Even having seen the previous portrait, nothing could have prepared Haru for the most recent one. She took in a sharp intake of breath. He had clearly matured over the years and his expression had become more wary and brooding. Haru couldn't deny that the man in the portrait was no doubt the most handsome man she had ever come across. Strangely she felt something familiar in the piercing green gaze. Haru felt her heart and self confidence drop into her boots.
'What is the matter Miss Haru?' frowned Yuki feeling a change in her mistress' attitude.
'I must be delusional if I think I have any chance here.' she muttered.
'Miss I don't understand.' replied Yuki in confusion.
'I mean look at him and then look at me.' she sighed 'With his looks he could have any noble lady he set his sights on.'
Haru dropped to her haunches and her hands came up to her face. Who was she kidding. Yuki knelt besides her and placed a hand on her shoulder. Haru felt another gaze on them and turned to see a white cat had entered the gallery. She had the most stunning turquoise eyes.
'Even the cats here are beautiful.' laughed Haru a little bitterly.
Yuki followed her gaze before stiffening slightly. She looked back at her mistress and knew she couldn't remain silent.
'Miss Haru I do think that you are being unfair to the master.' stated Yuki.
Haru blinked in confusion at her maid.
'You always come across to me as someone who doesn't allow someone's appearance or status to impact on how you see them as a person.' she continued.
'I don't.' stammered Haru her mind thinking back to her interaction with B.
'But you are doing just that with the master.' replied Yuki gently 'Now having seen his face you have already made up your mind on what he is like even though you have heard different from others. If that was what he wanted he would just have held a ball like the king wished. I know you have unfortunately experienced what some beautiful people are like. Behind their masks some hide vicious tongues and a selfish heart. The master is not like that. You judge him unfairly.' said Yuki.
Haru stared at Yuki. Where had her timid maid gone? Of course she was right. Haru knew that she was just letting her own issues cloud her judgement.
'I'm so sorry Yuki. You are right. I never realised how hypocritical I was being.' apologised Haru 'I guess it's down to my own insecurities and what I have experienced growing up. I've never felt like I am good enough.'
'We really need to work on your self confidence.' murmured Yuki ' Yes you are from humble beginnings but you are kind and warm hearted. You stand up for what you believe in and any gentleman would be lucky to call you his wife.'
Yuki then let out a gasp and her eyes widened. It belatedly dawned on her how she had just spoken to and told off a noble. It wasn't her place to say such things.
'Please forgive me mistress.' she begged ' I spoke out of turn.'
'Much more queen material.' Haru muttered to herself before standing up and shaking her head.
'I needed to hear that Yuki so don't apologise to me.' sighed Haru 'What would I do without you Yuki?'
She pulled her maid into an embrace.
'Be stuck in your room mostly.' replied Yuki with a grin.
'I apologise for my meltdown.' she sighed.
'There's no need.' replied Yuki ' Why don't we go to your room to freshen up before I take you back to the drawing room.'
Haru nodded glancing at the white cat who was still gazing as them in interest, a gentle almost amused purr rumbling from her chest. Haru wondered just how many cats the Von Gikkingen family had. Shaking her head she brushed down her skirts. She followed Yuki towards her room unaware the cat had also left the gallery and was now heading towards the baron's study.

A knock on the door brought Haru out of her thoughts. She had been resting on the chaise after taking a walk with Yuki around the walled garden. It had been such a lovely day and she felt like she could do with a change of scenery from the drawing room and her bed chambers.
'Come in.' she called as she looked up expectantly. She broke into a smile as B let himself in 'B! How are you?'
He turned and smiled, bowing towards her.
'I am very well Miss Haru.' he replied 'I hope the same can be said for yourself?'
'Oh yes, thank you.' she responded eyeing the small white envelope in his gloved hand 'Is that for me?'
'Ah yes.' he said breaking his gaze from hers 'These invitations have been delivered to all the remaining ladies.'
'An invitation?' replied Haru curiously 'Who could it be from?'
She approached B as he held out the small envelope to her. She smiled as she took it. Haru quickly opened it. Her eyebrows shot up on reading the contents.
'The dowager baroness.' she squeaked.
B chuckled at her reaction.
'If it helps at all she isn't half as scary as you are imagining.' he said.
Haru looked up from the card to him.
'Am I that obvious?' she asked.
'I'm afraid so.' he replied.
'Have you known her a long time?' asked Haru.
'Yes.' nodded B 'I have known her all my life.'
Haru was intrigued to know more about B's past but a thought popped into her head.
'Is this another task?' she said.
B opened his mouth to respond but Haru interrupted him.
'Sorry, sorry I know you are not at liberty to say.' she apologised.
'That's all right but I will say that I will not deny the statement.' B replied with a wink 'If it helps I do believe that you will get on well with her.'
'Thank you.' she smiled, his confidence in her was touching 'Have you been keeping busy?'
'Yes but I enjoy the things I have to do. I am not good being idle.' he smiled back.
'Are you working on anything interesting at the moment?' she enquired.
'Well yes I am in charge of the preparations for the upcoming ball.' he explained.
'B-ball?' stammered Haru 'What ball?'
B frowned at her slightly.
The baron's ball. All nobles have been invited to attend. It is where he will be announcing his future bride. It was mentioned in the original invitations that were sent out.' explained B getting slightly worried that Haru was starting to look nauseous 'Is something wrong?'
Why had her father kept that snippet to himself? He was aware of her dislike for attending such social events but this was hardly one she could avoid on the pretence of having a headache. She had a really good reason for not liking them. Perhaps he hadn't wanted her to spend her time worrying about it but having the news dropped on her out of the blue didn't feel any better. She looked up at B who was eyeing her with concern.
'I can't dance.' she blurted out before covering her mouth in horror.
B looked at her in surprise.
'Look most of the young ladies have no doubt been dancing since they could walk but that isn't the case for me. It's not like I haven't tried either. Father hired me an instructor but I guess that I was just born with two left feet.' she sighed.
'For someone who can twirl when they are happy are you sure?' he said.
'How do you know about that?' asked Haru in surprise.
His only response was a chuckle. He was then quiet for a little while looking at her thoughtfully.
'What if I taught you to dance?' he said.
Haru looked up at him quickly having not expected such an offer.
'Are you not busy with your duties?' she asked.
'I'm sure that I could fit in helping one of the young ladies to feel more comfortable. I enjoy dancing so it wouldn't be a chore for me.' B said.
'Ha you haven't seen my 'fancy' footwork yet.' she muttered.
B couldn't help but grin. He could never resist a challenge.
'Do you know what? Suddenly being invited to have tea with the dowager baroness doesn't seem so scary compared to this.' she said flatly.
B chuckled at her.
'You will be fine.' he said 'Just trust me.'
A couple of days later Haru was nervously wiping her hands on her skirt.
'I thought you said you wouldn't be scared of this.' said Yuki as she guided her mistress along the hallway.
'I said compared to dancing.' murmured Haru 'That doesn't mean that I'm not terrified right now.'
'You have met other elder nobles before though, haven't you?' asked Yuki.
'I have.' agreed Haru 'but their opinion of me never really bothered me. For some reason I really want her to like me.'
'I'm sure she will.' smiled Yuki as they approached the orangery. She knocked on the door before opening it 'My lady is for you Ma'am.'
'Please come in.' came a voice from within.
Haru froze, her nerves getting the better of her. She felt Yuki's hand push gently into the small of her back to encourage her forward. She entered the room and immediately dropped into a curtsy.
'Thank you for inviting me your ladyship.' she said keeping her eyes down.
'Now now my dear there is no need for that.' a kind voice laughed 'Please come and join me.'
Haru lifted her eyes to take in her first look at the dowager baroness. She didn't seem overly different from the portrait she had seen. Perhaps a little older. Once again she was struck by a pair of eyes. Everyone here had such vivid colour irises. Haru felt hers were a boring brown in comparison.
'Thank you.' she replied as she moved to accept the vacant chair.
A maid she didn't know served them tea.
'Thank you Miku, that will be all.' said the dowager baroness excusing the girl and watching her leave 'I feel it is better that things are private. Not that I do not trust the staff here.'
'Of course.' replied Haru with a nod.
The turquoise gaze scrutinised her.
'So are you enjoying your stay here dear?' she asked.
Haru had been tempted to just say yes but she felt that she couldn't deceive the lady in front of her.
'It has been difficult but I have been adjusting. The manor is gorgeous and the household staff are very friendly and accommodating.' replied Haru smiling fondly as she thought of B and Yuki.
'Yes I have heard that some of the young ladies have not been behaving in the manner expected of them. This has done them no favours when it comes to my son.' sighed the dowager baroness.
Haru realised the small gap left would have been a perfect opportunity that someone could bad mouth the competition. Haru chose to keep quiet and picked up her cup again taking a sip. A satisfied smile spread across the older lady's features. Haru placed her cup down again remembering the small item in her pocket.
'If her ladyship will accept I have brought a small token of my appreciation with me.' she said.
'Appreciation of what?' the lady replied in surprise.
'Inviting me to tea.' responded Haru 'My Mother always told me that I should never turn up empty handed.'
Haru removed the folded cloth from her pocket and placed it on the table between them. She hoped that it wouldn't be seen as an attempt to bribe. The lady laughed in surprise before reaching out and picking up the gift. She unfolded the cloth to reveal a beautifully embroidered handkerchief. Haru had even managed to incorporate the family coat of arms. The dowager baroness ran her finger over the stitching.
'It's exquisite.' she murmured before looking up at Haru 'Which estate are you from?'
'Count Tsuki's.' replied Haru.
'You are Naoko's girl?' asked the lady.
It was Haru's turn to look surprised.
'Y-you knew my mother?' she stammered.
'Of course my dear. Count Tsuki and my husband were good friends and I often spent time with your mother when the ladies had to take tea or whatever event it was. Her steadfastness made a lot of them more bearable.'
Haru felt her eyes become damp. It was lovely to hear from someone who knew her mother.
'I see that she taught you well.' the older lady smiled still running her finger over the embroidery.
'Thank you.' replied Haru feeling her cheeks pinken at the compliment.
The older lady gazed at her again before letting out a small chuckle.
'You know.' she said 'We have actually met before.'
'We have?' replied Haru in confusion. She didn't often attend social events if she could avoid them and could not remember meeting members of the Von Gikkingen family.
'It doesn't surprise me that you don't recall. You were only young.' she explained 'It wasn't long after the count and your mother married. He brought you both here to visit. You were a bit of a tear away then if I remember correctly.'
Haru's pink cheeks darkened.
'I was struggling to adjust with my new lifestyle.' she recalled.
'Oh it is nothing to be ashamed of. It was a massive adjustment for someone of your age. Do you remember anything about your visit here?' asked the older lady.
Haru shook her head.
'I'm afraid that you are going to enlighten me though.' she replied.
The dowager baroness chuckled again.
'You all came to visit one afternoon and we were all sitting out in the walled garden enjoying the sun. Not long before you were due to return home we realised that you had wandered off and disappeared.' she began.
Haru's cheeks were getting warmer. Was it possible to blush more?
'We had all the available household members scouring the estate for you. We were sure a little girl could not have gotten too far but you were well hidden. Your mother was frantic when finally Humbert appeared walking out of our stone maze carrying you on his back' she continued.
'Who?' asked Haru in confusion.
'My son.' explained the older lady.
'Oh' replied Haru before it dawned on her who exactly her son was' Oh!'
The lady smiled and Haru got the feeling that she had done something which was going to embarrass her further.
'He brought you back over to your mother who was desperate to hold you, but you had a firm grip around my son's neck and didn't want to let go. You told your mother that my son was your hero for finding you when you were lost and that you were going to marry him.' she laughed.
'Oh dear lord.' gasped Haru dropping her head into her hands.
Apparently it was indeed possible to blush further as she went scarlet. She could feel the heat creep up her neck and her ears. She was given a few moments before she felt a gentle hand on her shoulder. She looked up to see the older lady smiling at her kindly.
'Does umm, does your son remember that happening?' asked Haru meekly.
'I am not certain. He was of course a few years older than you then but I couldn't be certain either way.' she replied.
'I hope he doesn't. How embarrassing.' sighed Haru.
'You were just a child. Who knew that you would end up back here in this predicament.' said the dowager baroness.
'Yes.' murmured Haru is disbelief.
There was a quiet knock on the door and Yuki's blonde head appeared. Haru was surprised that the allocated time was already over.
'Once again, thank you for inviting me' said Haru standing up from the table and curtsying.
'You are welcome my dear.' the older lady replied 'Also thank you for this. It really is lovely.'
She watched as the young lady followed one of her favourite maids out of the room. She sat back in her chair and sighed. The dowager baroness could see why her son might start to favour this one.
Chapter Text
The grandfather clock in the hallway chimed two and Haru looked up from her embroidery. She knew that it wouldn't be long until B appeared to begin her dance lesson. She sighed to herself. It wasn't as if she didn't appreciate his offer. He already seemed to have a lot on his plate and was still creating time to help her feel more comfortable with practice. She was afraid that at least one of them would be leaving with bruises. It was funny that of all the activities she had undertaken growing up she could never grasp the co-ordination for dance, although she was able to master other things. Her mind drifted slightly wondering where Yuki was as she usually accompanied her most afternoons. They had now developed a good friendship and did truly enjoy spending time in each others company. It wasn't the only relationship developing although that was of secretive glances and smiles. The prince had returned to the estate for an official meeting with the baron to discuss some court issues but before he left he had insisted on a brief catch-up with Haru and naturally she brought Yuki with her. Haru smiled as she didn't mind being used as an excuse for the two to meet. Wasn't she the one who had suggested it in the first place? She was brought out of her daydream by a knock on the door.
'Come in.' she called as she returned her focus to the hoop.
B let himself in and shut the door behind him.
'Good afternoon Miss Haru.' he said happily.
'You seem to be in a good mood today.' she commented as she added a couple more stitches.
'Well it's such a lovely day.' he replied 'A fine day for a dance lesson.'
Haru kept the groan internal and gave him a brief smile.
'I fear that you will not be in such a good mood afterwards.' she murmured.
'Come now Miss Haru. I am willing to take the risk.' he responded.
The laugh that bubbled out of her wasn't particularly ladylike and Haru covered her mouth quickly. She looked up worried that B may have taken offence but he was leaning against the door frame with a grin on his face.
'Before we go please tell me one thing about the baron.' said Haru.
'What sort of thing?' he asked curiously.
'Anything.' she replied 'Any interests or hobbies perhaps? I'll even settle for his favourite colour.'
B chuckled before putting his hand to his chin thoughtfully for a few minutes.
'Well he does enjoy swordplay.' he replied eventually 'He is quite skilled with a broadsword although his preference is fencing.'
B looked up and was surprised by the large grin from Haru. It lit up her face. He couldn't help feeling a little hot around the collar.
'You.. you like swordplay?' he asked in surprise.
'This isn't the only needle I can wield.' she smiled.
'Foil.' he corrected without thinking.
'I know.' she replied 'Do you want to know a secret?'
B found himself eagerly nodding.
'I'm the top fencer on my father's estate.' she revealed 'As the count didn't have a son and I was some what unruly when I first arrived he decided to channel my energy into interests that ladylike studies couldn't help with. Outside of the estate apart from Hiromi of course no-one knows about this.'
'What sort of activities other than fencing?' he asked strangely intrigued with knowing more about her.
'Apart from the fencing there was also archery and horse riding, and I don't just mean side saddle.' she grinned naughtily 'Sometimes we would combine the two together. Father said that if I had been born a boy that he would have been able to enter me into competitions and he was confident I could have won a lot of them.'
B's mouth was hanging open. The delicate looking young woman in front of him was full of surprises. He finally remembered his manners and gave himself a shake.
'Miss Haru are you trying to distract me from today's purpose?' he finally asked.
'Of course not.' she replied ' You were the one asking me questions.'
She smiled sweetly when he couldn't respond.
'Shall we?' she asked, standing up and placing her embroidery on the chaise.
'Of course.' he responded offering his arm to her as she approached.
It didn't take too long to walk to the manor's ballroom. They entered and Haru was lost for words. She had been in rooms like this before but it still took her breath away. She thought that perhaps as it was mostly empty that she could take in the detail more. She realised that a soft melody was playing and she looked across to see Yuki sitting at a rather grand looking piano. On realising that they had entered the room Yuki shut the lid and crossed her arms over her chest.
'And where have you been?' she asked.
Haru looked at her in surprise.
'Yuki are you scolding me?' she replied in a low tone.
A look of panic flashed through Yuki's eyes.
'I'm so sorry Miss Haru. I don't know what came over me. I didn't mean to speak in that manner.' she apologised her eyes down to the floor.
She heard an indelicate snort and lifted her eyes to Haru's which were full of mirth.
'Miss Haru please don't tease me in this way.' squeaked Yuki placing a hand over her heart.
Still standing at Haru's side B curiously looked between the two young women.
'I'm sorry Yuki.' smiled Haru 'What are you doing here?'
'I'm here to assist with your practice.' she explained.
'Yuki has kindly agreed to provide musical accompaniment for your lesson. As you can tell from the short piece you heard, she is a skilled pianist.' B explained further.
Yuki's pale cheeks went pink at the compliment.
'I'm no expert but I do enjoy playing when I can.' she mumbled.
'Shall we begin?' asked B removing Haru's hand from his arm and bowing to her.
Haru responded with a curtsy before looking nervously at him.
'We will start slow and nothing daunting.' he reassured her.
She nodded as he placed her hand on his shoulder and then taking the other hand in his. She took in a sudden breath as his hand lightly touched her waist.
'You know the basic steps?' he asked.
Haru nodded again. With her growing nerves she had lost the power of speech.
'Then let us begin.' he smiled, giving Yuki a nod to start playing.
Once again a soft melody filled the room. As they began to move their feet Haru's nerves seemed to seep into her bones and she became more rigid. She found her gaze drifting downwards to watch her feet hoping they would go where she wanted them to.
'Don't look down.' a warm voice whispered in her ear.
Haru lifted her head slightly startled before getting lost in his green gaze. It was then her mind completely forgot what she was doing and she managed to step back and trip over her own feet. B caught her before she fell. Haru brought her hands up to her burning face.
'i'm sorry.' she sighed 'I told you that I couldn't dance.'
'It's fine.' replied B, his hands on her shoulders to keep her standing 'We just need to build your confidence. You are just so nervous and convinced you will fail before you even begin. It makes you too tense to even begin to enjoy it.'
Haru nodded, her face still buried in her hands.
'Would a demonstration help?' asked B after some thought ' Some people find visualisation helps which allows their mind to focus.'
Haru sighed again bringing her hands down. Her cheeks were still tinged pink.
'It couldn't hurt.' she admitted.
B nodded in a satisfied manner before he led her over to the piano.
'Yuki if you wouldn't mind?' he said with a smile.
She nodded and hopped up. Haru took her place sitting on the bench as Yuki approached B and brought her arms up to meet his. Haru concentrated as they slowly moved, taking time to observe the movement of their feet and that Yuki was taking subtle cues as B led her around. Watching them made her realise this wasn't as hard as she had built up in her mind. She had caused her own mental block that prevented her from overcoming her fear. She realised that she needed to approach this the same way she did her archery. She needed to keep a level head and calm her spirit to focus. Some how B's slow and steady training method was unlocking her desire to actively undertake this thing that she had feared for so long. B stopped and looked up at Haru.
'Once you have mastered the building blocks of dance anything is possible.' he smiled.
He gave Yuki a look who nodded at him with a small smile before he whisked her around the room in a more complicated dance. The twirls and dips got faster before they ended up back where they had started and Haru was staring at the pair of them with wide eyes and an open mouth. Yuki was panting lightly.
'There is no way I could do something like that.' said Haru in shock.
'Perhaps not at first.' mused B releasing his hold on Yuki and bowing 'but what I have learned so far about you Miss Haru is that you always seem up for a challenge.'
Yuki moved back to take her place at the piano again.
'Are you ready to begin again Miss Haru?' asked B offering his hand.
She looked at the outstretched glove and then back up to his face. A smile broke out on her face.
'Yes.' she replied already feeling a smidgen more confident.
As they walked back to her room an hour or so later Haru held onto Yuki's arm and sigh contently. Her feet were aching and her progress had been slow but she actually felt that she had achieved more that afternoon than she had previously with the tutors her father had employed. She believed that a lot of it was down to B getting her in the right mindset to begin with. She found herself leaning her head against Yuki's shoulder tiredly before realising it wasn't very appropriate.
'You're so talented Yuki.' she murmured 'I wouldn't have ever imagined you would possess such skills.'
Yuki smiled at her mistress.
'There aren't exactly many opportunities that arise where a maid needs such skills.' she replied softly before continuing ' My father was a piano tuner. He could fix other instruments as well. It was because of him that I was able to learn to play the piano. Being able to play that beauty in the ballroom here is a real honour.'
Haru smiled as she could feel Yuki reminiscing beside her.
'and the dancing?' she asked quietly.
'Mother was a dancer.' smiled Yuki 'She was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. There was always a lot of music and dancing when I was growing up. I always wanted to be a dancer like Mother but then life happens and you need to make tough choices for your survival.'
Haru squeezed Yuki's arms sympathetically. She wouldn't push her now to explain her past but she hoped that one day she would be ready to let her in. Haru's mind drifted back to the upcoming ball. She didn't know how but she was going to make sure Yuki would attend. If the rumours were true that the crown prince would be in attendance she would do everything in her power to push Yuki into his arms. Haru knew that he was already smitten with the young maid but if he could just see what an angel she was when she danced he definitely wouldn't be looking any further for his future princess.
Chapter Text
Another week at the manor was drawing to a close and Haru was keeping herself occupied by writing a letter to her father. She hoped that he was well and that she was missing him. She informed him about some of the goings on at the manor and also sent a request for a few of her ballgowns to be sent over. Haru was still determined to get Yuki into that ball. Being of a similar size Yuki could easily wear one of her dresses and Haru was confident enough in herself to make any alterations that may be required. She had refrained from telling the count off for withholding information about the ball. For all her concerns she was actually enjoying the lessons B was providing although she wasn't convinced the pounding heart and shortness of breath she sometimes felt was normal. Haru realised she was smiling to herself. What was going on? A knock on the door made Haru look up as the man himself let himself in.
'Hello I wasn't expecting to see you today.' she smiled, standing up from the table and her now completed letter.
'No I know.' he replied 'I needed a break and thought I would pop in and see you.'
Your company is always welcome.' she responded before a small frown appeared on her face.
If his face hadn't been covered in fur Haru was certain that B would have bags under his eyes. They themselves looked strained and tired.
'I'm concerned that you are being overworked.' she said 'Are you sleeping properly?'
'Not at all, this is my own doing.' he replied trying to brush off the issue.
'Hmm.' she responded clearly not convinced 'If you were even considering an impromptu dance lesson you can forget it. You look like you're about to fall down. Come sit.'
Haru grabbed his hand without thinking and nearly dragged him over to the chaise before forcing him to take a seat.
'I ensure you that I'm perfectly fine.' he said before a tell tale yawn escaped his lips.
'And I ensure you that you are not.' snorted Haru 'You are to take at least a fifteen minute rest break with me before I allow you to continue with whatever duties you have today. If the baron has a problem with that he can deal with me.'
'Are you always this bossy?' he chuckled but stopped objecting.
'No but sometimes it is necessary.' she smiled taking a seat next to him.
'You are unusual.' he replied.
'Yes I know, we've already been through this.' she sighed 'Just rest for a bit, I won't tell anyone.'
B nodded and Haru leaned over to pick up her book to read and give him some peace. She was just locating her chapter when he suddenly slumped against her shoulder. Haru let out a squeak in surprise. She could never recall someone falling asleep so quickly before. B was clearly very tired. She wondered what he meant that it was all his own doing. Haru realised this wasn't exactly proper but then she was never someone to always follow the rules. She rested her head against his as she listened to his gentle breathing. Thankfully he didn't snore, she wasn't sure how much she could have put up with if he had. His breathing however was lulling herself towards sleep. Haru gave herself a mental shake and picked up her book again. She knew that she had pretty much ordered him to have a fifteen minute break but he was clearly exhausted so she had not intention of waking him. She would deal with the consequences that may arise later.
Haru realised that the same sensation she felt when dancing with B were occurring now. Her heart was beating madly in her chest. It appeared that it was not the dancing itself but just her closeness with him. Had she somehow developed feelings for this strange man through the time they had spent together? Surely not. Haru sighed, as if her life wasn't complicated enough with the prince and the baron, now her heart was falling for another. She was lost in deep thought when the door suddenly burst open, making her jump, and a panicked looking Yuki appeared. She eyed the unusual sight in front of her but seemed to let out a sigh of relief.
'Yuki what's the matter?' whispered Haru.
Yuki closed the door behind her and walked over to her mistress' side not wishing to disturb the sleeping man. She thought to herself how sweet the pair looked together.
'There has been an incident.' she said quietly.
'An incident?' repeated Haru with concern.
Yuki nodded.
'A small group of the ladies have become rather disgruntled due to the lack of appearance by the master. They have stormed and taken over the master's study. They are demanding they see him and that it's unfair how he is deciding who stays and who goes when he and I quote 'doesn't have the decency to show his own face'' she explained.
Haru looked at her in surprise.
'Thankfully the master wasn't there but we haven't been able to find him either.' continued Yuki 'According to Toto he was due to be preparing for travel tomorrow to meet up with another lord whose estate neighbours this one to discuss something to do with the land along the boundary. Toto has checked his bed chambers and also spoken with the dowager baroness. She didn't know where he is either and with the ladies on the rampage around the manor the sooner he is found the better.'
'Why did you seem so relived once you came in here?' asked Haru in confusion. It was hardly as if she was hiding the baron away in her room.
Yuki's eyes flicked over to the still sleeping man and back to Haru.
'B will know where he is.' she replied hoping that her mistress would accept the white lie 'He knows the master better than anyone, even Toto.'
Haru nodded accepting Yuki's response. She was loathed to wake B up but it seemed that it was important to locate the baron as soon as possible. She was still amazed that some of the ladies had the brass to essentially arrange a coup. Haru gently shook B's arm to rouse him from sleep. She ended up shaking him a little harder than she wanted to as he was deeply asleep. Eventually his eyes opened to reveal his glorious green orbs. They focused first on Yuki who was crouched down in front of him and then he realised his position slouched against Haru. B sat up straight and a faint blush could be made out under the cream fur on his cheeks. He felt a hand on top of his and he turned to Haru.
'I'm sorry to wake you.' she apologised 'Unfortunately there is a bit of a situation and the baron needs to be located as soon as possible.'
'A situation?' he said looking between Haru and Yuki.
'Yes.' replied Yuki 'Toto needs to see the master as soon as possible.'
B took in the urgency in her voice.
'Well we cannot have Toto being worried.' he said as he stood up 'Come along Yuki let's go and find the master so he can be updated on whatever the problem is.'
He headed towards the door with Yuki scurrying behind him.
'I'll be back shortly Miss Haru.' she said.
'Don't worry about me.' she smiled.
The two left and headed downstairs where they would most likely locate Toto. Once again the baron allowed his cat features to fade away.
'Thank you for not blowing my cover back there Yuki.' he said 'I appreciate that you do not like lying to Miss Haru. Believe me I don't like deceiving her either.'
Yuki nodded as they approached a door where they could hear Toto squawking inside. Before they entered Yuki coughed slightly causing the baron to turn and look at her.
'Master if I may be so bold could I ask a question?' asked Yuki meekly.
'Of course. You know that we are an open household here.' he replied.
'Do you like Miss Haru?' she asked putting quite a bit of emphasis on the word 'like'.
A small smile appeared on his lips.
'I think that Miss Haru is a rather fetching young lady.' he answered before pushing the door open.
Yuki followed behind smiling to herself, even more certain than ever and rather hopeful that her temporary mistress was to become a more permanent member of the household.

Haru was surprised when she entered the dining room for breakfast the next morning to find that there were only three places set. It appeared that the protest in the study had not gone the way those ladies had hoped. They may have in fact managed to meet the baron but had also been sent home for their trouble. The two ladies who were sitting at the table both looked up at her as she made her way over. Was sitting with fewer going to make things more awkward? To Haru's surprise once she had sat down the girl on her left turned to look at her and cleared her throat.
'Lady Haru I feel like I should apologise to you.' she began 'I am not the most outspoken of individuals, I tend to blame that on having two older sisters. I let my fear of the other ladies get the better of me. I should have stood up for myself and for you. How they have treated you has been truly terrible and I'm so sorry for my part in that by keeping my silence.'
Haru looked at her wordlessly, too shocked to be actually receiving an apology from a noble that she didn't know how to respond.
'It's probably too late in the day now,' the lady continued with a sigh 'but I admire how strong you have been throughout and would really like to seek friendship with you.'
Haru blinked twice before a small smile crossed her lips. The girl did seem sincere and she couldn't say that she had ever treated her with contempt. Haru reasoned that she couldn't help it if she had a nervous disposition. She could see why the baron had not yet sent her home. This lady had potential.
'I would like that.' she said quietly.
The other girl beamed at her.
'My name is Chika. I'm the third daughter of Duke Inukai. My father's estate actually neighbours the baron's.' replied the girl.
'You already know my name.' responded Haru 'I am well aware that rumours about myself, even if some of them are not true, have been the centre of gossip for years. If you have any questions to separate fact from fiction then please don't hesitate to ask.'
As the two ladies got acquainted with each other the third had remained quiet, thoughtfully watching over them whilst stirring her tea. She often kept herself to herself. To some she appeared meek and mild but those who knew her true self would know this was a cover. Befriending this lady could be advantageous to her.
'Lady Haru. I also wish to apologise.' she stammered 'I too was overwhelmed and too frightened to stand up against the other ladies, especially Lady Violet. I feel ashamed of my behaviour.'
She lowered her head to show she was guilt ridden at her behaviour but a tight smile tugged at her lips. She was a wonderful actress if she did say so herself and bringing up Lady Violet's name would hopefully gain her brownie points as it was widely known the prickly relationship the two shared.
'Oh.' said Haru 'Well I wasn't expecting this but if I can forgive Lady Chika I can also do the same for you.'
'Thank you.' she replied theatrically allowing a couple of tears to slide down her cheeks 'My name is Midori and I am the daughter of Viscount Asuka.'
Haru nodded her head and sipped her tea. Before they could go any further the door opened and Toto walked in. Haru beamed as she had a growing fondness for the straight-laced head of staff. Curiously she had noticed that Chika had suddenly found interest in the table cloth and her cheeks were pink.
'Morning ladies.' Toto greeted with a bow 'It's a lovely day and Baron has decided to offer you a morning ride so you can see the wonderful estate for yourselves'
'Will he be joining us?' asked Midori.
'I'm afraid not.' replied Toto shaking his head 'He has business to attend to.'
Although it would be a shame to still not meet the mysterious baron Haru was excited to go riding. During the good weather she would be out riding every other day on her stallion Kaito. She had given him his name after her first ride with him. She had come back exhilarated as if they had been flying. Again her riding style at home wasn't very ladylike but she could put up with a sedate trek if it meant exploring the land around them.
'I will be taking you out so if you could meet me in the front reception in an hours time. Your maids have already been alerted so they will be able to assist you with your riding gear.' continued Toto.
Haru had expected to have to visit the stables and was secretly slightly disappointed that the horses had been brought to the front of the manor. Toto clearly had a good eye for matching the ladies with the right horse. She wondered how many horses the baron owned. If she remembered later she would ask Yuki or B about them.
They set off following Toto. At certain points he would stop to describe something to them about the estate. He was currently explaining about the slopes being south facing which made them more favourable for growing the vines which provided the estate with a large proportion of its income. The Von Gikkingen wine was well known across the kingdom. Toto's smile had broadened as he explained how they were trialling a new crop of mulberry bushes. Haru's gaze had landed on Chika who seemed completely enraptured. She suspected from her earlier behaviour that the attention was to do with Toto himself rather than the subject he was so passionately talking about. Haru smiled at the thought of Chika being more taken with the head of staff rather than the head of house.
A yawn behind her broke Haru from her thoughts. Surely Midori wasn't tired? She glanced around to see the blonde lady inspecting her fingernails, completely disregarding Toto's commentary. It was at that moment Haru realised this was a lady to be wary of. She had come across quite sweet and apologetic at breakfast but now she suspected that she was playing a game and the baron was the prize she had set her sights on. Haru grew concerned that she would be a dangerous individual to get on the wrong side of.
They continued their tour and Chika held onto Toto's every word. Haru followed behind them, a smile playing on her lips. She tried to forget the faux friend behind them.
'I say.' suddenly came Midori's voice with a gossipy tone that Haru despised 'Is it me or is Lady Chika rather taken with the help?'
'She is politely listening to him.' replied Haru not willing to be dragged into this.
'Hmph.' responded Midori before lapsing into silence.
As they moved away from the vines the workers in the field waved to Toto and bowed to the ladies as they passed. Haru would smile and incline her head at each individual. Midori narrowed her eyes at Haru's back. Why did she have to be so noble? Even for a commoner her manners with everyone be they peasant or royalty were impeccable. Midori realised that Haru was the enemy not that little fool Chika. If she was to have any chance of getting her hands on the baron and his fortune she would need to get rid of Haru.
'We are just going to pass through a wooded area.' called Toto 'The terrain here is more uneven so please take care.'
The two ladies behind him nodded their heads while the third allowed a wicked smile to spread across her lips.
'Perfect' she thought.
As they entered the wooded area the path narrowed slightly before opening up again further down forcing the horses closer together. Unseen by the others Midori reached up to carefully remove one of the long pins currently being used to keep her hat attached to her hair. Silently she leaned forward and jabbed the pin into the rump of Haru's mare. Midori sat back quickly flicking the pin into the undergrowth and awaited the chaos to ensue. The mare whinnied loudly out of shock and pain before she bucked her unsuspecting rider up in the air. Haru landed with a bump and knocked herself out on the rocks and roots which littered the floor. Midori let out a scream.
'Oh help, help!' she cried with tears running down her cheeks 'Lady Haru are you all right?'
Toto turned around in his saddle in alarm at the scream and clocked the white mare attempting to rush past in her panic. He managed to lean out quickly and grab the horse's reins nearly pulling his arm out its socket. He jumped down quickly and tied both horses to a branch before rushing to the fallen lady.
'What happened?' he demanded as he dropped to his knees and brushed away hair from Haru's forehead. A small trickle of blood could be seen flowing from her scalp.
'I don't know.' wept Midori 'We were just trotting along and her horse reared up. I guess Lady Haru hasn't had much experience with horses. Please say she is okay.'
Toto groaned to himself. Why did it have to be this one that got injured. Baron was going to kill him. Getting medical attention for Haru was now his number one priority. His manners towards the remaining ladies flew out of the window.
'Do you both know how to ride properly?' he asked both of them as he picked up the fallen brunette.
Chika nodded fearfully.
'Of course.' purred Midori.
'We need to return to the manor now. Please keep up with me.' he replied.
With some difficulty Toto managed to attach Haru's mare's reins to the back of his own horse's saddle and then hoisted himself back up still with the unconscious girl in his arms.
'Follow me.' he called as he kicked his horse into a canter.
The group came thundering across the gravel just as the royal carriage pulled up. Toto had to call one of the guards to assist with taking Haru before climbing down. The stable lads were on hand to sort out his steaming horse.
'What happened?' asked Lune as he approached.
'Lady Haru took a tumble off her horse.' explained Toto taking the girl back into his arms.
'I'll get one of my men to call for a doctor right away.' replied Lune before turning away.
Toto ignored the other two ladies still sitting on their horses. The stable lads could deal with them. As he approached the open door a flash of blonde hair caught his eyes.
'Yuki.' he called out.
The maid turned to him in surprise and her eyes widened in horror at Haru's limp form.
'What happened?' she cried running up to her mistress.
'She fell from her horse. The other lady said that it looked like she may have not had much experience. Can you please prepare her bed, The doctor should be here shortly.' explained Toto.
'Miss Haru said she has been riding ever since she joined the count's household. Apparently he would have let her enter competitions if she had been a boy she's that good.' said Yuki.
Toto's face darkened as he let the information sink in.
'Then I'm afraid in that case I suspect foul play.' he sighed.

Haru groaned in an unladylike manner. Her arm came up so her hand could gingerly touch her pounding head. On the feel of a bandage under her fingertips her eyes shot open in surprise.
'Welcome back to the land of the living.' came a voice.
Haru turned her head, wincing slightly in pain. On seeing Lune sitting next to her bed her eyes widened in surprise.
'What the heck are you doing here?' she asked in disbelief.
'Now now that's no way to speak to the Crown Prince.' he grinned at her 'You had a fall. I offered to watch you whilst the others are running around trying to sort things out. The doctor came and looked you over. You have a cut on your head and concussion.'
'I feel like I've been run over by a herd of elephants.' grumbled Haru 'What on earth is the prince doing playing nursemaid?'
'As I said the others were busy.' he said 'I came here to see Baron but happened to arrive at the same time that Toto came cantering up with you unconscious in his arms.'
'The baron isn't here. Toto said he had business elsewhere to attend to. Are you sure you didn't just visit to see Yuki?' asked Haru suspiciously.
'Well that would have been a bonus.' grinned Lune his cheeks turning a little pink.
Haru smiled before her head began to swim.
'Thank you for sitting with me but I do apologise as I think I'm about to pass out again.' she murmured before her head fell back against the pillows.
'Ever so polite Haru.' he chucked as he leaned forward and patted her hand.
Seconds later the door flew open and Baron stormed in. He looked at Lune in surprise not expecting to see him but his appearance on his estate wasn't his first concern.
'How is she?' he asked almost desperately 'I cannot find Toto and the others seem to running around nervously.'
'She's fine. Bit of a bump to the head and concussion but the doctor said it was nothing serious.' explained Lune.
'Has she woken up yet?' replied Baron looking worriedly at Haru's pale face.
'Briefly for a few minutes. She pretty much insulted me before she passed out again.' grinned Lune.
It was at that moment Baron realised the placement of Lune's hand and his eyes narrowed. Lune blinked in surprise and lifted both hands up in an appeasing gesture.
'Now, now I am no threat. You know that despite Father's desires. So she's the one then?' he asked curiously.
Baron sighed running his hand through his hair for he was in his human form.
'I don't think I have ever come across someone so compatible in my entire life.' he replied.
'Well that's good although Haru still believes that she hasn't met you. You need to tell her the truth soon. She doesn't like to be lied to and she has a fiery temper.' warned Lune.
'It's been more skirting around the truth that lying.' said Baron hoping Haru wouldn't suddenly wake up and hear their discussion 'I was intending to tell her the truth this evening. This certainly wasn't part of the plan.'
Both men turned slightly as Yuki came into the room with a fresh flannel to put across Haru's brow. She looked at both of them in surprise. Lune's face lit up with a large grin and Yuki smiled slightly. Baron cocked his head to one side. Had he missed something?
'Yuki where is Toto?' he asked breaking up the besotted gazing in front of him.
'He went to the stables after the doctor confirmed that Miss Haru's injuries were nothing too serious.' she replied.
'Why would he need to go to the stables?' responded Baron.
'Miss Haru's mare bucked unexpectantly and threw her. It's so out of character. She is usually such a dependable steady girl. Also Miss Haru is a skilled rider so it must have really come out of the blue for her not to have time to react. Toto and I both suspect foul play so that's why he has gone to check on the mare.' explained Yuki.
'I want him to report to me as soon as he has finished. I'll send one of the staff to take a message to him. Yuki please stay here and keep watch over Miss Haru. Lune did you say that you have business to discuss with me?' replied Baron tiredly.
'It's just to do with Father and the upcoming ball but it can wait.' said the prince.
Baron shook his head.
'No it's fine. It will keep my mind occupied until Toto comes back. Let's head to my study and leave the lady in peace.' he replied.
Both men headed towards the doorway. As he followed Baron out Lune leant back slightly and winked at Yuki before the door closed behind him. Yuki flushed. He really was such a tease.
The second time that Haru woke up she had been pulled from her unconscious state by the sound of shrill screaming. She opened her eyes and was surprised to see the seat next to her was empty. She looked around her room and spotted Yuki leaning on the windowsill trying to see what was happening below. Haru winced slightly as another set of shrieks were heard.
'Yuki' she called rubbing her temple.
'Oh Miss Haru you're awake.' replied Yuki as she turned to her mistress.
'What on earth is happening and what is that awful noise?' grumbled Haru.
'Oh that's Lady Midori being ejected from the manor.' replied Yuki in the same manner as if she was informing Haru what the weather was like outside.
'What?' shouted Haru sitting up in surprise.
'Miss Haru do you remember much before you woke up back in your room?' asked Yuki.
'Do you mean about the horse riding with Toto?' she responded 'We were moving through an area of trees. My horse reared unexpectedly and I wasn't prepared. I'm afraid it's really blurry after that point.'
'Lady Midori caused your horse to rear up.' began Yuki as she crossed over to take the seat next to Haru's bed.
Haru's lips formed a little 'o' in surprise.
'H-how?' she stammered.
'We already suspected something wasn't right when Lady Midori was implying that you didn't really know one end of a horse from the other. I guess she didn't expect that we actually talk to each other. She gives her maid a cold front. Not rude, perfectly polite but curt. Toto was heading to the stables to check over your mare and as he arrived one of the stable lads was coming out to report that when washing her down he came across drying blood on her rump. As she is white it was quite noticeable. If you had been riding the chestnut instead of Lady Chika the injury might not have been picked up. Toto suspects some sort of sharp pin was used but of course there is no evidence. The injury to the horse and Lady Midori's reaction to being questioned was enough for the master to send her home.' explained Yuki.
'What has she been screaming and shouting about so insistently it woke me up?' asked Haru.
'Oh that it must have been a bee that stung your horse. She quickly switched to how dare the master kick her out and how she was the best and he would regret his decision. She also said some not so nice things about you I'm afraid.' replied Yuki.
'Wow she really has shown her true colours.' remarked Haru.
Yuki nodded.
'Is there anything I can do for you Miss Haru?' asked Yuki 'Perhaps a cup of tea?'
Haru's face lit up as the noise outside finally quietened down.
'You really do know just the right thing to say.' she grinned.
Chapter Text
A few days later Baron found himself pacing outside of Haru's room. He was taking several deep breaths before knocking on her door.
'Come now.' he muttered to himself 'You promised Lune that you would tell Haru the truth now. You can't keep putting this off. She's been left in the dark for far too long. What is the worst that could happen?'
'She could be furious and decide she's better off taking her chances with the prince.' said a snide voice in his head.
Baron drew a sudden breath. Sometimes he really was his own worst enemy. Finally he knocked on the door. He waited a few moments before letting himself into the room. He frowned at the empty bed but his gaze quickly found Haru standing at the window. She was looking out over the walled garden. She turned and a bright smile lit up her face.
'B!' she exclaimed 'It's been too long. I like the new look.'
A matching smile crept onto Baron's face. He had decided to enter the room in his half-cat form as not to startle her but he had every intention on coming clean. He was dressed slightly more formally wearing a red waistcoat and blue bowtie.
'What are you doing out of bed?' he scolded lightly as he walked over to her.
'I'm fine.' sighed Haru 'It was only a small bump.'
'Doctor's orders are at least one more day of bed rest.' he fussed as he led her back to the bed.
Haru followed meekly but chose to sit on top of the quilt. The mollycoddling she was receiving was a little excessive. She felt perfectly recovered.
'I hope the baron hasn't been keeping you too busy with work. I've missed out conversations.' she said.
'Not at all.' he replied 'I have just been a little preoccupied with my duties. The upcoming ball has been taking up a lot of my time.'
He noticed the smile fall from Haru's lips at the mention of the ball.
'Come now Miss Haru, after all the practicing, your dancing is much improved.' he continued with a chuckle.
'It's not that.' she replied in a small voice, hugging her knees.
'Then what is it?' he asked gently.
Baron was alarmed to see her eyes glitter and Haru's bottom lip wobble slightly. He sat down on the chair that was still next to her bed. She looked at him before taking an unsteady breath.
'The day after tomorrow my fate will be sealed. I will either end up the fiancee of the baron or the crown prince.' she sighed.
'Are they such horrific prospects?' he replied looking increasingly worried.
'No.' responded Haru with a shake of her head. 'I'm sure they are both good men although I still haven't met one of them.'
'Then what worries you so?' asked Baron reaching out and squeezing her hand.
Haru looked down at their hands before looking back up at him, eyes glittering again with tears threatening to spill.
'Either way I won't get to be with the one I love.' she confessed, closing her eyes in pain.
Baron's heart constricted in shock and a multitude of different emotions ran though him. She was in love with another man? Why hadn't she said anything? He stood up suddenly walking away a few paces.
'Why didn't you tell someone earlier? You could have returned home a lot sooner if you had informed someone.' he asked looking down at his feet feeling crushed.
He suddenly felt a pair of small hands on his waist and a forehead pressed against his back. In his angst he hadn't notice Haru slip off the bed again.
'I didn't know then.' replied Haru softly 'Besides I still would have ended up as the prince's bride.'
'What do you mean that you didn't know?' said Baron turning around to face her in confusion.
Haru took a step forward towards him and cupped his furred cheek with one hand gently.
'I know that you are a little different but that doesn't bother me. If I marry Lune I will never see you again and if I marry the baron I will live on this estate and have to keep my feelings hidden. I don't know which would be more painful.' she sighed.
Baron couldn't believe his ears. Haru had fallen for him in this form. She stepped up on her tiptoes and pressed a quick kiss to his lips.
'I wanted to do that if only once.' whispered Haru 'If I am to marry for duty then I wanted to give my first kiss to someone I love.'
Haru made to step back but was prevented as Baron cupped her cheek and kissed her back. Her eyes widened in surprise before closing blissfully as she wrapped her arms around his neck entwining them together. After some time they separated leaning their foreheads against each other.
'We are going to be in so much trouble.' Haru giggled nervously.
Baron stroked her cheek and smiled.
'I'm afraid that I have a confession of my own.' he admitted 'I hope that you can forgive me and understand my reasons were never to deceive.'
Haru gave him a worried look as he released his hold on her and stepped back slightly closing his eyes. She watched in astonishment as the fur and cat features melted away to reveal the man in the portrait she had studied weeks before. Haru admitted to herself that the artist had done a good job but the man in front of her was more handsome in the flesh than she had expected. He opened his eyes to look at her. They were a different shape but still as mesmerising as the first time she saw them. Haru belatedly recalled rumours that the family were able to wield magic.
'Y-y-you're the baron Von Gikkingen!.' she stammered as she staggered back against the bed.
'I am.' he nodded 'Please believe me that I didn't want to deceive you. I have been as truthful with you as possible. I hope you can understand why I did this?'
Haru frowned in confusion before Baron reached for her hand, bringing it to his lips and kissing it.
'Please give me a chance to explain.' he pleaded.
Haru looked at him, biting her lip before nodding. Baron walked over to the chair once again and cleared his throat before beginning.
'Although I am a mere baron compared to other ranks of nobility Father was a shrewd man and clever with investments. This made me a person of interest to other noble families almost from the moment I was born. An engagement was arranged for me from a young age and I was expected to marry the daughter of a duke when she came of age. This is not unusual amongst nobles and something I had to accept for my future. What I didn't anticipate was for my bride-to-be to run off with another man.' he explained.
'Of higher ranking?' asked Haru quietly.
'Yes.' he nodded 'Higher ranking and greater wealth. Therefore she felt a better prospect. The idea of feelings never came into it. I had only met her on a handful of occasions before. Suddenly Father died unexpectantly and I became baron over night. I begged Mother to let me choose my own path especially since I had so many duties thrust upon me. She agreed and the freedom was exhilarating. Soon however after entering court as an official baron for the first time I discovered that meeting and seeing people for who they truly are was very difficult.'
His cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
'Apparently my face is rather appealing to the young ladies and I found myself almost swamped with unwanted invitations.' he sighed 'I ended up burying myself in work to continue my father's legacy. Also caring for Mother became my main concerns. I didn't feel the need to rush into marriage to have a baroness despite what other nobles thought.'
Haru watched curiously as this man opened up to her. His life hadn't been easy growing up in a noble household, it appeared that she wasn't alone.
'When the king's proclamation was announced I felt furious and backed into a corner due to my age. I didn't want a political match or just a pretty face. I wanted to find someone that I could hopefully have things in common with and hold a decent conversation with.' explained Baron 'As soon as I realised how open the wording was on the proclamation I started working on how I could do it my way as much as possible. I had no intention of letting my future rest on just a ball.'
'The tasks.' murmured Haru 'I never really understood what they were.'
'The tasks were more subtle tests. I wanted to see how each lady acted when their guard was down to get a true picture of what they were like. The first was to see how each young lady treated my staff. You stood out from the beginning. You treat the staff with curtesy and not beneath you. I wanted to find someone who had the same mindset as myself. Yuki is your biggest fan. After the first day or so each allocated maid reported to me on their treatment. I was actually horrified at some of their accounts and the ladies responsible were sent home. One even hit their maid.'
Haru gasped at the horror of such a thing.
'The next task involved how they would treat someone who was a little different.' he continued.
'This is when you introduced yourself as B.' murmured Haru.
Baron nodded.
'I wanted to have a first hand experience to how each lady reacted. When I told you that some screamed at me and threw something at me that was the truth. Others were pleasant enough but seemed wary. There were only a few including yourself that didn't seem phased by such an unusual man. This again helped to send some ladies home.' he continued 'Then we had the first rule breaking. The rules were not harsh or difficult to follow. They were just so I could move easily around the manor be it in this form or my half-cat form. Then Prince Lune turned up unexpectantly. His presence almost caused a riot when Lady Violet couldn't respect the rules of the household.'
He sighed, rolling his shoulders.
'Mother insisted on getting involved despite my objections. I was positive that ladies who had been trained for such occasions wouldn't have any issues with passing a little tea party.' he said.
Haru smiled ruefully. She recalled meeting the dowager baroness and the carefully constructed conversation and the well placed openings that would give a person enough rope to hang themselves if they were of a spiteful nature.
'She loved your gift by the way.' he said suddenly interrupting Haru's thoughts and making her blush 'She shows it off whenever she can.'
Haru hid her warm cheeks in her hand peeking out between her fingers.
'After that my well thought of plan began to fall apart and there were no more tasks due to a couple of spanners in the works. Firstly my volume of work suddenly increased dramatically as well as sorting out the arrangements for the ball. Then there was you. Those dance lessons really were a break from the monotony of it all and I found myself craving your company.' he said.
Haru looked up at him in surprise.
'I realised that I didn't wish to play the king's ridiculous game anymore and that I was falling for you Haru. However I was struggling on how to send the other ladies home.' he sighed 'When those ladies pretty much stormed my study I saw it as the perfect opportunity to send them home.'
'Did you spend some of your free time with the other ladies as well?' asked Haru.
Baron shook his head.
'No but they weren't left to their own devices. They were attended to by the staff and provided with entertainment.' he replied 'On the evening of your accident I had intended to bring the other two ladies into my study and explain that I had made my choice. Things obviously didn't go to plan and you got injured. I regretted dragging this out but I guess I was scared.'
Baron bowed his head and reached out to squeeze on of her hands. He felt Haru return the pressure and he looked up at her. She studied his face which made him gulp. A fear of rejection building up inside him.
'So you kind of like me then?' she said tilting her head slightly.
'No.' he replied slowly shaking his head before breaking into a grin 'I love you.'
Neither was sure who moved first before they swept each other into an embrace that made it clear that neither wanted to let go of the other for a long time. Although he looked different, on the inside he was still the same person Haru had fallen for and she prayed that they could have a happy ever after that she had never dared to dream of.
'I promise from now on to be one hundred percent truthful with you.' he murmured into her hair.
'Good.' said Haru sitting back 'As I have so many questions, especially to do with this magic and changing into a cat business Baron.'
The name felt foreign on her tongue but she knew she could no longer refer to him as just B.
In response to hearing it a large smile had broken out across his face.
'Of course.' he replied brushing away a stray hair from her forehead. 'Oh and by the way my favourite colour is green.'
Haru looked up at the mesmerising eyes that had captured her from the first moment.
'Funnily enough.' she murmured as she snuggled against him ' It's my favourite too.'

Yuki yawned as she approached the kitchen on the way to get breakfast before starting her day. As she placed her hand on the door she heard a commotion coming from inside. Yuki groaned, it was far too early in the morning for this. She pushed the door open to find out what was going on. She was greeted with the sight of Toto flapping his arms in the air holding a piece of paper in his hand. He really was highly strung.
'Yuki.' he called having spotted her loitering in the doorway 'Do you know where Baron is?'
She shook her head.
'I have come straight from my room. I haven't seen anyone this morning.' she replied.
Toto groaned.
'He's gone and done his disappearing act again. We've received a really important message that he needs to know about as soon as possible.' he explained 'The king is dead.'
Yuki looked up in surprise. She hadn't been aware of his majesty being in poor health.
'Long live King Lune.' she responded automatically before placing a hand over her mouth when realising the impact of the king's death. What did this mean for his proclamation?
Toto was running a hand through his black hair trying to figure out where on earth Baron could be. It was a modest sized manor but he had checked every room he normally would be in.
'I may know where he could be.' said Yuki finally.
'Oh and where would that be?' he asked.
'Where I found him last time.' she responded with a slight blush.
All thoughts of breakfast had flown from her mind as she retraced her steps out of the kitchen and headed for her mistress' room. The master surely wouldn't be there but if Toto had checked everywhere else it still had to be a possibility. Yuki quietly knocked on Haru's door before letting herself in. It was still rather early and she knew that her mistress wasn't a fan of getting up in the morning. The room was shrouded in darkness. Yuki approached to draw back one of the curtains to allow the dawn light to flood the room. She turned around cautiously half afraid of what she might find. Breathing a sigh of relief Yuki scolded herself for even considering that the master would do something so improper even if he had spent the night in her mistress' room when he shouldn't have. Had they been up talking all night? Baron was sat asleep in the chair against Haru's bed. Haru was on her bed also asleep. Her head was resting against his shoulder and his own head against the top of hers. Yuki looked at them and once again got the feeling that they looked right together. Her eyes widened when she realised that the master was in his human form. Did Miss Haru now know the truth? What did this all mean? Yuki mentally shook herself. She needed to wake him and inform him about the urgent message from the palace. She walked towards the bed and gently shook Baron's arm. At getting no response she realised that he was just as heavy a sleeper as the mistress. She shook his arm again but harder, desperately hoping not to wake Haru as well. Finally he stirred and looked up at her in surprise.
'Yuki?' he mumbled rubbing his eyes with one hand.
'I'm sorry to wake you but the royal messenger has been with an urgent message from the palace.' she explained.
Her words woke him up further and Baron realised where he was. He flushed slightly at the sight of Haru sleeping against his shoulder and then smiled. He turned his focus back to Yuki.
'What news is that?' he asked.
'The king is dead.' she replied watching Baron's eyebrows shoot up in surprise.
'Long live King Lune.' he murmured shaking his head slightly in shock.
He carefully took Haru by the shoulders to move her back against the pillows allowing him to stand up.
'What else did it say?' he asked Yuki.
'I don't know I'm afraid.' she said 'Toto seemed pretty panicked that he needed to find you as soon as possible.'
Baron chuckled.
'That's just his mannerisms. He panics far too easily.' he replied.
Yuki smiled before her eyes flitted towards Haru and then back to Baron asking him an unspoken question.
'She knows everything.' he confirmed with a smile 'Now let's go before we disturb her'.
'Too late for that.' came a voice from the bed.
Haru yawned and stretched before rubbing her eyes. She looked in confusion at Baron and then Yuki.
'Isn't it a little early for this?' she asked.
'The palace sent a message.' replied Baron 'The king is dead.'
Haru remained silent, a look of shock across her face.
'Yuki would you please tell Toto I will be there shortly.' said Baron.
'Yes of course.' she replied before disappearing out of the door.
'This is unexpected.' murmured Haru 'What will happen now?'
'I imagine the court will be called back to the palace immediately. There will be discussions about a royal lying in state and funeral before they will look into crowning Lune as the new king.' explained Baron.
'What of the king's proclamation?' asked Haru.
'That will become null and void as Lune has never agreed with it. It will also mean that you wouldn't be forced to marry Lune against your will either.' he replied.
Haru looked down at her lap, a worried look on her face. Baron leaned over cupping one cheek to get her to look at him.
'Just because there is no longer a proclamation does not mean things have changed.' he said running his thumb over her cheek reassuringly 'I still wish to marry you but now I will be able to do so in a proper manner.'
Haru let out a sigh of relief and smiled at him.
'I'm guessing that you will be heading to the palace soon and I'll return to Father's estate.' she replied.
'For now yes but rest assured I will come for you.' he smiled kissing her brow.
'May I ask a favour before you go?' asked Haru.
'A favour?' repeated Baron feeling intrigued.
'When you go to the palace take Yuki with you.' she said.
'Why Yuki? She doesn't usually accompany me to such things.' he asked.
'I know but you may or may not be aware but Yuki and Lune have something going on.' she said 'She will be able to comfort him.'
'I did feel that there has been a flirtation between them. The not so secret glances.' he chucked 'Very well I will take her with me.'
Haru smiled. She really hoped that it would work out for the pair. She just knew that Yuki would make an excellent queen.
'I must go now before Toto falls off his perch.' replied Baron briefly pressing his lips against hers 'I will of course see you again before we depart.'
Haru nodded and she watched him leave the room. It amused her that it wasn't only her father who saw Toto as some large bird. She could imagine Baron and her father getting on together rather well.
Chapter Text
Count Tsuki was sitting at the table awaiting his breakfast. He was about to start reading his recently delivered newspaper when suddenly the housekeeper came into the room, bowing towards him.
'Sir the young mistress has returned.' she said.
The count dropped his paper in surprise as Haru appeared behind the older woman.
'Chicky.' he called out gruffly.
A grin spread across her face at the nickname before she threw herself into the large man's arms.
'I missed you.' she sighed, her words muffled against his chest.
He smiled and enclosed her arms around her in a safe embrace he knew she relished. It was so good to see her. The manor had been strangely quiet without her presence even though she was not a particularly loud individual. He had definitely missed her over the last few weeks. It was such a surprise that she was back. His happiness suddenly dissipated when he realised the reason that must be the cause of her sudden arrival back on his estate. The baron had rejected her! She was perfect in his eyes and he couldn't understand how that was possible. A growl left his throat.
'How dare he!' he roared 'Rejecting my little Haru for some snotty-nosed simpering girl.'
His tirade was cut off by two fingers pressed against his lips. Despite their considerable size difference Haru had him wrapped around her little finger.
'He didn't reject me. Have you not heard the news?' she asked with a slightly confused frown.
'Heard what news?' he responded finally letting go of her and returning to his seat.
'Did you not receive a visit from a royal messenger?' she enquired.
'Oh yeah one came very early this morning.' he said indicating the still unopened envelope sitting on the table in front of him.' It's probably just another of the king's silly proclamations.'
'Father it's important!' cried Haru in disbelief.
He shrugged his shoulders, more interested in his breakfast.
'The king is dead.' said Haru flatly.
The room filled with gasps of shock. The count launched himself forward, grasping the envelope before ripping it open and reading the contents which confirmed Haru's words.
'I told you that you should have opened it.' tutted the housekeeper.
'Baron had to leave quite urgently to head to the palace so we were advised to return to our home estates.' explained Haru.
Her father picked up on the familiarity in her voice of using the lord's nickname.
'Oh so it's Baron now is it?' her purred evilly.
Haru blushed and looked away although a smile played on her lips.
'Well Chicky?' continued her father.
'The ball was supposed to take place tomorrow with the announcement of Baron's bride.' she replied ' Over the last few weeks we have gotten to know each other rather well. There were only two of us left after the third was ejected from the manor after causing my horse to throw me.'
'What!' he roared again 'Who would dare do that. I want names!'
Haru patted his arm to calm him down.
'It's all been taken care of and I'm fine.' she assured him 'As I was saying there was only myself and Lady Chika left. Although personally I felt that she was more interested in Toto than marrying Baron.'
'That Birdbrain.' he snorted but then another thought crossed his mind 'With his majesty's death, his proclamation will be no more.'
Haru nodded.
'That is true but he still wishes to make me his wife.' replied Haru, a silly grin spreading across her face 'It just means that he will be able to do so in the proper way now.'
'Oh he will, will he?' responded the count thoughtfully stroking his chin.
'Father!' she laughed 'When he comes to visit please don't be mean to him. He is really nice.'
'Ah you always spoil my fun.' he chuckled delighted that Haru was finally being accepted by someone who could give her a good future. It also appeared that this wasn't any form of political match and they had actually developed feelings for one another. His eyes closed as he thought of his dearly departed wife. He saw so much of her in Haru 'Does he make you happy?'
Haru nodded enthusiastically.
'He really does father.' she smiled.
'I'm proud of you Haru.' he replied finally.
Haru looked up at him in surprise hearing the crack in his voice.
'I can imagine that the last few weeks have been hard for you but you persisted and your sweet nature has won a man's heart.' he continued 'I know that your mother would be equally proud of you.'
'Thank you.' she whispered with tears in her eyes.
The count then shook himself.
'Right that is enough of that.' he said gruffly 'Let's get back to breakfast shall we before I will also have to attend the palace.'
Haru smiled, it was good to be home.
Chapter Text
A couple of weeks later Count Tsuki was back on his estate. The proceedings with regards to the recently deceased king had thankfully gone smoothly allowing the majority of the court to return home. As a newly appointed advisor to King Lune, Baron had stayed behind and had not as yet returned. Haru seemed to have easily slipped back into her old routine but her father could see the signs that she wasn't herself completely and that she was missing him. The count sighed. How had his little girl grown up so quickly? He knew that it wouldn't be long until she left home for good. He looked at the pile of folders that had built up on his desk. His eye drifted to the beautifully sunny day outside his window. What was one more day off before he got back to his work? He was the lord of the manor after all, who was really going to tell him off? He then chuckled to himself as he thought his housekeeper probably would. She had been working for them since Haru was young when she arrived as a governess. Martha had been like a second mother to her after her own had tragically died. When Haru had no longer needed a tutor she accepted the recently vacated post of housekeeper rather than move away to teach another family of noble children.
He looked out of the window again before thoughtfully reaching for his newspaper. His wife had continuously teased him about his addiction to his paper and reading it from cover to cover, absorbing every detail contained within. He smiled fondly. It was still one thing that brought him pleasure but he really needed to go somewhere where hopefully he would be left in peace. His eyes fell upon the terrace at the side of the house which was currently bathed in sunlight. The hedging would hopefully obscure the view of him from anyone else in the house. Satisfied with his plan for the rest of the morning he slipped out of his study to make his way towards the stairs. He passed Haru's bed chamber to see the door was still closed. He grinned to himself. Nothing could come between Haru and her sleep. For a large man he moved silently down the stairs. He decided it would be easiest to slip away unseen via the front door. Tucking his paper under his arm he pulled open the door and was shocked to see a fist coming level with his face. The man on the other side of the door jumped back in surprise tripping down the steps and landing on the gravel in a pile.
'Toto.' the count regarded his best friend's brother and worthy foe.
'Muta.' he responded standing up and wiping his dusty hands on his trousers. He blew a lock of hair out of his face.
'What are you doing here Birdbrain?' asked Muta 'Also why are you greeting me which an attempted punch to the face?'
The insult riled Toto.
'Now see here I was attempting to knock on the door. It's not my fault you happened to open the door at that moment.' he grumbled 'Besides you're so wide people could mistake you for a door.'
Muta growled at him but was cut off by another voice.
'That's enough Toto.' sighed Baron coming into view on his horse 'You promised that if you were to come that you would behave.'
'He started it.' muttered Toto like a naughty schoolboy.
Muta snorted.
'Yeah and I can finish it as well.' he replied in a threatening tone before he was shoved in the back to move aside.
'What's all the commotion?' asked Haru as she squeezed around him.
The loud voices had caught her attention and her curiosity had caused her to seek out the source of the disruption.
'Baron.' she cried as she took in who the visitors were, a smile breaking out on her face.
She drank in the sight of him. He was in a grey suit that she had become accustomed to seeing him in but also a top hat. She couldn't help but think that it suited him. He was sat upon a stunning stallion who was as black as night. She felt that they made quite a picture. Haru shook herself out of her daydream and launched herself down the steps that Toto had minutes earlier fallen down. Baron had jumped down from his horse and she had raced into his open arms. She took in his scent as she buried her face into his shoulder.
'I missed you.' she murmured into the material.
'I missed you too Haru.' he replied dropping a peck on her hair.
'Well this is getting sappy.' grumbled her father.
'For once I agree with you.' nodded Toto.
'Oh hush.' responded Haru as she resurfaced 'I remember exactly what you were like with Mother and Toto how are things with Lady Chika?'
Both men went bright red and she felt Baron's chuckles. She grinned in a satisfied manner. Haru took Baron's hand, leading him towards the house.
'Please come in.' she said.
'Of course Haru but I have come to speak with your father.' he replied.
'You did?' she squeaked.
'Of course.' he said smiling fondly 'I said so before, didn't I.'
She nodded smiling back before catching sight of the housekeeper lurking in the hallway.
'Oh Martha could you please bring some tea for our guests.' she requested 'They will be taking it in the parlour.'
'Of course Miss.' she replied before heading to the kitchen.
'So another boiled grass fan then.' sighed the count.
'Father!' admonished Haru.
Baron patted her hand gently before turning to her father.
'I'm afraid so.' he agreed.
'Well as your arrival has disrupted my morning activity.' began Muta.
'Slacking off.' muttered Haru under her breath having spotted the newspaper.
'and you wish to take something precious from me. I agree it's time we had a talk.' he continued.
Haru's cheeks went red.
'I have nothing but Miss Haru's best interests at heart.' Baron replied sincerely.
Her father grunted.
'If you would like to follow me.' he said 'Haru you may return to whatever you were doing.'
She nodded, making a step to move away from them. Baron reached for her hand before they went their separate ways.
'Perhaps afterwards you could give me a tour of the estate? I hear your horse is a sight to behold so perhaps on horseback?' he murmured.
Haru nodded before stepping up on her tiptoes and pressing a kiss against his cheek.
'Good luck.' she whispered.
Her father rolled his eyes.
'That's enough Chicky, be off with you.' he muttered.
'Yes sir.' she replied cheekily before disappearing up the stairs.
Baron watched her until she was out of sight and then followed her father into the lion's den.

The sweet smell of hay tickled Haru's nose as she entered the stables. On spotting his mistress Kaito whinnied and snickered to gain her attention. She smiled as she approached his stall. She ran her fingers over his velvety muzzle. His head leaned into her, first investigating her fingers and then trying to access the pockets of her jacket. Haru laughed.
'I really do wonder whether you are actually pleased to see me or just the treats I bring you.' she mused as she pressed a sugar cube to his lips.
Kaito greedily accepted the treat, covering Haru's hand in slobber. She reached for the towel that she kept by his stall rather than wipe her hands on her jodhpurs. She looked down at her clothing and wondered what Baron would think of her riding gear. He had only ever seen her in skirts and dresses since they had met. He hadn't seemed at all phased when she confessed that she often didn't ride side saddle so her riding attire shouldn't come as a big shock to him. Kaito placed his large head over her shoulder and attempted to nibble her ponytail. She tutted quietly and fed him another treat to save her hair. The other horses currently at this end of the stable were quietly munching away on their hay nets. A loud whinny was heard coming from the stalls reserved for horses of visitors. Kissing Kaito on his forehead and feeding him one more treat she headed down to have a nosey. A large black head bobbed up and down as she approached. Haru always thought her stallion was impressive but this one was several hands taller.
'You're a handsome boy aren't you.' she murmured as she gingerly placed her hand out to him.
At first he blew hot air out of his nostrils at her before his whiskery muzzle began investigating her fingers. She slipped him a treat which he accepted.
'Just don't tell Kaito.' she whispered in a conspiring manner 'He'll only get jealous.'
The horse looked at her with big brown eyes and his ears flicked around as he picked up a sound that Haru didn't.
'So what's your name then?' she wondered out loud.
'Schwartz.' came a voice causing Haru to nearly jump out of her skin.
She whirled around with her hand resting over her thumping heart to find Baron leaning against the stable door with a grin on his face.
'I'm sorry, did I scare you?' he said, his smile turning mischievous.
'Don't do that!' replied Haru having now got control of herself. 'For one or two unexplainable seconds I actually believed the horse spoke.'
Baron chuckled as he walked up to her and wrapped her up in a hug.
'I have to say that it wasn't just Kaito who was getting jealous of all the attention Schwartz was getting.' he murmured into her ear.
Haru let out an unladylike snort. Baron stepped back from her and appraised her outfit. Haru couldn't help but bite her lip.
'You know this style really suits you.' he continued making her blush.
'Thank you.' she murmured before looking up. She noted his hat was missing 'I see that you have survived your talk with my father. Any bruises or broken bones?'
'No I am still in one piece. I have been threatened but I expected nothing less. He really does care for you.' replied Baron.
'I know and he does want the best for me.' she nodded before looking around 'Where is Toto?'
'I left him with Muta. I thought a ride with just the two of us would be perfect.' he replied.
Haru raised an eyebrow knowing what the two of them were like.
'I know, I know.' sighed Baron bringing his hands up 'I just can't help feel though that they actually enjoy annoying and winding each other up.'
Haru giggled before signally the loitering stable hand to come assist with tacking up the stallions. They set out from the stables with Haru slightly in the lead. She pointed things out on the estate with explanations here and there in a similar way that Toto had before they lapsed into companionable silence.
'How is Lune?' asked Haru breaking the quiet.
'He is coping.' replied Baron 'He is of course still grieving but he is undertaking his new duties well. It is a relief that he had actually started shadowing his father on certain things and of course he will always have advisors to assist him.'
'That's good.' murmured Haru.
'You were correct in suggesting I take Yuki along with me.' he smiled 'She was a tremendous help.'
'Oh.' replied Haru.
'Yes such a help that she is no longer under my employment.' he grinned.
Haru pulled on her reins to cause Kaito to halt so she could turn in her saddle to give Baron her full focus.
'And?' she prompted.
'She is now under the employment of the palace however do not be surprised to hear of a royal announcement when everything has settled back down.' he replied.
Haru squeaked. She knew that they were meant for each other from the first moment they had laid eyes on each other.
'I'm so happy for them.' she smiled before gazing over the ridge they had come to halt at. 'Let's head over to my favourite place.'
Baron followed her gaze and found his eyes settling on a large lake glittering in the afternoon sun. He mused that from this angle it looked like a giant cat's paw. Along the edge he could make out a sandy beach. Kaito began to snicker in excitement.
'You may wish to close your eyes to such unladylike behaviour.' grinned Haru as she kicked Kaito into a canter.
The horse headed straight down the path towards the beach, racing along the sandy shore before crashing through the gently lapping water at the lake's edge. It was an exhilarating sight to behold. Baron couldn't help but laugh before leaning forward in his saddle.
'Do you think it's fair that they are having all the fun?' he whispered to Schwartz who's ears flicked back to his voice 'We can always dry out later.'
Soon they were thundering down the slope to join the pair frolicking in the water.
Afterwards the two stallions were tied up at a respectable distance from each other to rest and graze as Baron and Haru went for a walk around the lake hand in hand. They came across a small jetty and more intriguing a wooden pergoda.
'Father had that built for Mother.' explained Haru 'He loved to fish you see. Although a peaceful hobby it was rather lonely so the pergoda was constructed so that Mother could come along too. She could quilt or whatever she chose to do whilst keeping him company.'
'I once heard a rumour about your father eating all the fish in the lake.' said Baron.
Haru laughed ruefully.
'No doubt started by Toto.' she replied 'They spent a lot of time down here during the good weather. I would sometimes join them when I wasn't studying. He doesn't fish anymore though. I don't think he has been down here since...'
Haru's voice trailed off as she thought about her mother. Baron squeezed her hand before leading her over to the pergoda where they both took a seat.
'Are you all right?' he asked.
'Yes.' she replied 'Sometimes the past can catch you unawares.'
'I agree.' he nodded 'but I would like to talk about the future.'
Haru looked up at him expectantly.
'As you know I have spoken to your father and the fact I haven't been run off the estate, despite bringing Toto with me, shows that he is willing to give his blessing.' he started wrapping an arm around Haru bringing her closer to his side 'The past few weeks away from you have been awful. Although I kept myself busy there was a gnawing feeling in my chest. If I am completely honest I would marry you today if I could bring you straight home.'
'Home?' repeated Haru.
'Yes.' he nodded 'The manor isn't the same without you. Of course the decision is yours. If you wish for a longer engagement I will of course respect that. You've turned my world upside down Haru and I cannot imagine you not being in it.'
He lifted her hand to his lips and pressed a kiss to it. Haru smiled at how quickly her life had become a whirlwind. From pretty much being an outcast to being proposed to by one of the most eligible bachelors out there. She reached up and ran a finger over his cheek.
'I don't want to drag things out but I also don't want to rush things either. I do want to spend as much time with you as possible and I imagine that I will be spending quite a lot of time at your estate making preparations.' she said.
'I am sure Mother would be very eager to help out.' he replied.
'Good because my father would be hopeless.' giggled Haru.
'That means there is only on thing left to do.' said Baron as he slid from his seat onto his knee and produced a ring box from his jacket pocked ' Haru will you officially become my baroness?'
Although Haru had never been a fan of titles being his baroness certainly had a ring to it.
'Yes.' she smiled as he slid a solitaire diamond onto her finger.
Baron raised himself slightly from his position to cup her cheek and draw her in for a kiss. Haru automatically wrapped her arms around his neck as their lips met sealing their proposal.
'Seems like I get to marry my hero after all.' Haru murmured to herself.
Baron cocked his head slightly but she just smiled at him before pulling him back up onto the bench. She settled back into his warm embrace so they could watch the sunset over the water. She would tell him one day about their unconventional first meeting but for now she just wanted to be in the present in the moment with the one she loved.

Thank you for reading and congratulations to anyone who worked out that Tsuki is the Japanese word for Moon :)
