Chapter Text

Rain Pours down outside the run-down shack Luz and Amity have taken momentary shelter in

“Ames, do you trust me?” Luz asks softly, as if the past month hasn't happened

Amity gives Luz and incredulous look and stutters “Of course I trust you Luz; I literally just fought the emperor of the boiling Isles next to you.”

Luz nods and gently takes Amity’s hand in her’s “Good.” Luz slowly begins moving Amity’s hand closer to the rain

“Luz, what are you doing?” Amity asks incredibly concerned

“Trust me Ames, It’s safe.” Luz assures her girlfriend 

Amity winces and waits for the sting when her hand leaves the canopy only to feel…cold? Amity opens her eyes to see the rain pool up in her outstretched hand “It doesn't hurt?” she asks, confused

Luz nods her head “the human realm’s rain is safe, nice even.”

Amity nods before thinking of a problem “Uh Luz?”

“Yeah Amity?”

“Where are we going to stay?”

Luz takes in a deep breath “Home.”

After a short and silent walk in the rain, the pair reach an unassuming house with white painted walls and a blue shingle roof.

“Welcome to Mi Casa.” Luz states with a bit of a forced smile before lifting up one of the stair boards and pulling out a spare key. “Mami isn’t home right now, she’s probably still at work so We’ll be alone tonight.”

Amity weakly nods and follows Luz into the house, shutting the door behind her and locking it “So what now Batata?”

Luz takes a breath in “First we need to change out of our wet clothes and shower…then we go from there.”

Amity nods and decides to bring up Luz’s changes later.

After thirty minutes Luz and Amity are both changed, both girls donning a pair of navy blue shorts with stars on them, Amity wearing a similarly colored plain shirt and Luz wearing a slightly lighter Blue striped shirt.

“Lets see what we can reheat for some food alright Ames?” Luz asks before realizing something very important “No no no no.” Luz reaches her hands into her hair and grips on tight “No puedo creer que dejé el huevo, mi palisman está de vuelta en el reino de los demonios”

Amity quickly reacts and reaches her hands up to Luz’s to prevent her from pulling on her hair “Batata what’s wrong?”

Luz’s breaths begin to grow shallow “I- I left my palisman back at the Owl house along with everything else, I was so sure our plan would work and I have nothing here, what if the palisman hatches without me, what happens-”

Amity makes a decision and shuts Luz up by pressing a quick kiss to her girlfriend’s cheek “Luz, calm down It’s all going to be ok.” Amity Spins a spell circle and a small messenger bag drops at Luz’s feet.

Luz slowly reaches down and picks up the bag before opening it and staring at the contents wide eyed. Luz looks at Amity with tears at the edge of her eyes “H-How?”

Amity pulls Luz into a hug “Eda thought there was a chance this went wrong so she made me promise to get you home safe above everything else…the night before we packed everything important to you in the bag. Eda enchanted it to hold more than it normally would be able to.”

Luz gently sets the bag down, careful to avoid damaging her palisman, before squealing with joy and grabbing Amity by the shoulders “Batata I love you so much I could kiss you!” she exclaims and Luz does just that, grabbing Amity’s cheeks and firmly presses her lips into Amity’s pulling back after a moment.

After another brief pause Luz’s actions finally catches up to the pair and they both blush bright red

“Santa mierda acabo de hacer eso” Luz exclaims and hides her face in her hands as she walks into the kitchen and reappears with a sandwich and a glass of water for each of them “here you go.” Luz mumbles .

Amity, similarly embarrassed, shyly takes the sandwich and sits down on the couch “thanks.” she mumbles.

After several very awkward minutes Amity speaks up “Hey Luz?” she asks tentatively

“Huh?” Luz asks

“Before your mom gets here I have a question.” Amity asks cryptically

“What is it Batata?”

“Luz, it may have been a month ago but I still remember what made you run away from Grom.” Amity decides to jump right to the point.

Luz gulps, secretly hoping she wouldn’t have to explain why her mother was what Grom became. “Amity…” Luz begins “I know what you’re afraid of, especially given your own family, but no I’m not afraid of mami. I wouldn’t have fought so hard to get back if I was…I was just afraid how she would react to the Isles.”

Amity reaches over a gently places a hand on Luz’s shoulder

Luz takes in a breath “I was supposed to be at a summer camp to help me “Think inside the box.””

“Because of the incidents at your school here?” Amity asks

Luz nods “Yeah…I went too far with the book report so my options were expulsion or Reality check camp…and I was worried about how mad mami would be if she found out I skipped camp.”

Amity nods, worrying less about Luz’s mother than before “So, what are you going to do? How are you going to explain me needing to stay here?”

Luz shrugs “I didn’t have a chance to think that through yet, but we could try the truth?” she suggest

“Luz weren’t you just talking about how you were worried about your mom’s reaction to the Boiling Isles?”

“Not the whole truth, just the part about your mom kicking you out…Mami won’t throw a kid out if they don’t have a place to stay.”

Amity is still a little hesitant but relents and trusts her girlfriend “Ok, If you’re sure.”

Luz nods “I am, she raised me after all.” she beams proudly

Amity nods “You are a very friendly and forgiving person Luz. and very hard to hate.” Amity looks down at her feet as she mumbles the last statement.

Luz stands up and Pulls Amity into a hug “Hey, Hermosa, you don’t have to beat yourself up about that, you were a child and your mother was a manipulative Perra de bruja.”
Amity softly chuckles “Luz, we’re still 14.”

“Oh yeah, we are…” Luz begins reminiscing on her time in the Isles, even though she was just there, before continuing “Lets go up to my room, It’s late and Mami is going to have questions in the morning, I’m home a few days early.”

Amity nods and follows Luz up to her bedroom where Luz takes the bottom bunk and Amity elects to sleep on the top bunk of Luz’s convenient bunk bed.

“Goodnight Batata.” Amity sleepily singsongs from the top bunk.

“Gnight Ames.” Luz responds before drifting off to sleep.

An indeterminate time later Camila pulls up into the driveway and gives her house a confused look as she sees the living room light on. “I don’t remember leaving that on.” She mumbles as she unlocks the door.

However she only gets more confused when she finds a pair of plates and a pair of cups sitting on the table in front of the couch in the living room. Picking up the red baseball bat near the front door Camila nervously walks through the house when she gets to Luz’s room with it’s door slightly Ajar. “Now I know I closed that one.” Camila mumbles as she slowly and silently opens the door, what she finds inside both fills her with relief and confuses her more.

Inside Luz’s room Luz, not Vee, she's still at camp, her Luz asleep on the bottom bunk of her bed. As she slowly walks up to her daughter’s sleeping form she sees another girl between Luz and the wall, pale skin, lilac hair, and most immediately shockingly, Pointed ears. Camila lets out a soft breath of relief, knowing her Mija is home safe and curious about her new “friend” Camila slowly leans down and plants a soft kiss on Luz’s forehead and lets a small smile reach her face as Luz smiles in her sleep.

Camila slowly walks back out of her daughter's room unaware of the piercing blue eyes following her from the top bunk.

Luz wakes up to light filtering through her window onto her face, she smiles slightly when she feels a familiar warmth on her back and snuggles back into the warmth and lets out a content sigh as she drifts back to sleep.

An indeterminate time later Luz is rustled from her sleep by the form behind her shifting and turning around. Slowly rolling over Luz finds her girlfriend’s face scrunched up and her whole body squirming in her sleep ‘she’s having a nightmare’ Luz recognizes.

Luz gently places a hand on Amity’s cheek and plants a soft kiss on her forehead “Hey, Batata, your safe, wake up.”

Amity’s face slightly relaxes and her body stops moving as her eyes slowly open “Luz?” she asks, her golden eyes slightly clouded by tears staring into Luz’s Hazel eyes.

Luz smiles “Yeah it’s me, I’m here Batata, you’re safe.”

“Where are we?” Amity asks, looking around and not recognizing anything

“We’re in my house, back in the human realm, do you remember what happened yesterday?” Luz asks softly

After a short pause Amity nods “Yeah…I do, I remember the castle, I remember taking an attack for you and everything going dark…and then I was slammed by a wave of magic nad brought back to the castle…I saw you do magic without glyphs, that fire and the barrier, Luz what is going on with you?”

Luz sighs “Amity…I don’t know…but back at the castle, Ames…You died…Belos’s attack killed you, You died in my arms Batata…”

Amity's face pales as she realizes the danger she was in “If I-If I died who brought me back?”

“I-I think I did…I can’t explain it but when got hit I felt something…its almost like something else taking over, I didn’t think I just acted.” Luz responded as she looked down at her hands “It’s not the first time it’s happened either.”

Amity looks at Luz confused before the human continues

“Back in the alley when those students attacked us I felt something similar but I was still in control, the same thing happened on the bridge of the castle when me and Eda fought Lilith.”

Amity’s face turns sour at the mention of her former mentor.

Luz opens her mouth to change to subject but stops when a familiar smell hits her nose, sniffing the air a few times before her mouth drops open

“Luz?” Amity asks confused

“Mami’s making breakfast.” Luz simply responds

“So what are we going to tell your mother about me?” Amity asks

Luz thinks for a moment “that you’re a friend from camp and you got kicked out of your home so I brought you here so you have a place to stay?”

Amity pseudo pouts “So i’m just your friend now huh Batata?”

Luz blushes “I just don’t know how mami would react to that.”

“Is there a reason your mom wouldn’t approve of us?” Amity asks

Luz sighs “It’s just, in the human realm some people don’t think two girls or two boys should be able to be together…I don’t think Mami is like that but i’m just worried, also i don’t know how she would react to you being a witch if she found out…we need to find a way to get you home after all.”

Amity still pouts but nods “I don’t really like hiding it, but I trust you, and keep in mind you are the more physical one between the two of us.”

Luz chuckles “I’ll be fine batata, now lets get downstairs and introduce you to mami, she’ll love you.”

“Luz wait-” Amity tries to stop luz but is cut off as Luz drags her out of the room and down the stairs “Luz slow down.”

Camila finishes cooking the last batch of pancakes when she hears the sound of two pairs of feet running down the stairs, well she’s up now.” she talks to herself as she turns around with a plate full of pancakes to find her daughter and a slightly frazzled girl with lavender hair and golden eyes, her hair hiding the pointed ears Camila is sure she saw the night before

“Morning Mami.” Luz excitedly near shouts

Camila chuckles “Morning Mija you’re home early from camp, sit down and can you explain who your friend behind you is?”

Luz excitedly nods and sits down, dragging the lavender haired girl with her “we finished camp a few days early.” Luz lies, hoping Camila buys it “Mami this is Amity, she’s a friend I made at camp.”

Camila notices the way Amity slightly flinches when Luz calls her a friend but doesn’t comment on it and nods “Why isn’t Amity at her home Mija?”

Amity frowns slightly and looks down at her plate “I can’t go back.” she mumbles

“What was that cariño?” Camila asks

“I can’t go back home Mrs. Noceda.” Amity answers, loud enough for Camila to clearly hear her but still low

“Why not?” Camila asks, not wanting to push but needing answers for herself

“My parents kicked me out a month into the summer.” Amity responds, trying to give enough to satisfy camila but not enough that she might accidentally give away anything about the truth

“That’s horrible cariño, no one should have to live on their own at your age.” Camila turns to Luz “Mija i know what you are about to ask and yes she can stay with us.”

Luz practically jumps out of her seat and runs over to Camila “Thank you thank you thank you.”

Camila chuckles “So how was camp you two?”

Luz seems to freeze in place for a moment “Camp was informative.”

“Mija I’m sorry I sent you to the camp but you got out of control with the book report.” Camila reassures her daughter as she places her hand on Luz’s shoulder

Amity chuckles “Luz told a few stories about her antics before camp.” Amity almost seamlessly blends the truth and the lies the pair came up with.

“So she told you about the snakes?”

Amity nods “And the sausages at the play, and the cheerleader incident.”

Camila chuckles “How did you two meet anyways?”

Luz and Amity share a nervous glance before Luz speaks up

“We…we didn’t get along very well at the beginning, and part of it was my fault.” Luz begins

“Luz none of that was your fault, I wasn’t the best person when you met me.” Amity defends

“Yeah, your mother had you pretty well molded, but still the library incident is at least 50% my fault.”

Amity scoffs and camila looks at the girls quizically “Library incident?”

Luz and Amity pale as they realize they just let out more than they should have.

“Mami…It’s not something we want to dwell on too much but the short story is that because I wanted to try to impress a pair of kids I snuck into the camp library and almost helped them steal and post Amity’s diary pages across camp.”

Camila’s eyes widen as she stares at Luz “Mija..”

“Mami I promise I didn’t know what they were planning until I found the diary, I thought they were just there for a book.”

Amity chuckles “Really Luz, you thought Ed and Em were there for a book?”

Luz turns to Amity “Hey, In my defense, I only saw them in passing up until that point.”

“Fine, I guess you're forgiven.” Amity chuckles, “And you did try to stop them when you found out what they were doing.”

Camila’s glare on Luz lessens slightly “Well that’s good.”

Amity smiles and continues “Besides if it wasn’t for that You wouldn’t have found out I like Azura and We still might be on…less than friendly terms.”

Camila chuckles ‘of course she found someone who shares her interests’ “Well we can talk about more permanent arrangements later tonight but right now I need to head to work.”

Luz hugs Camila “Bye mami.”

Camila leans down and kisses Luz on the forehead “Goodby Mija, bye Amity.”

“Goodbye Mrs. Noceda.” Amity responds

Camila chuckles, “Cariño just call me Camila, you’re one of Luz’s friends.” ‘and she doesn’t have many of those,’ Camila thinks to herself.

After watching Camila leave the driveway Luz turns to Amity

“Do you think she bought it?” she asks quietly

Luz thinks for a moment “I think she did, but I’m not sure she would exactly believe the truth.”

Amity shrugs and spins a small spell circle, creating a ball of light “Well i can still do magic here…even if your glyphs don’t work my magic should be proof enough that it happened.”

“I know…I just want everything to go well when we tell her, I don;t want her to find a reason to ban me from returning to the Isles, even if it is only visits.”

Amity chuckles “Batata, when has something being banned ever stopped you?”

Luz chuckles “Alright I guess you’re right.”

Amity smiles “so what do we do now?”

“Well we could start by going up to my room and I can show you some Azura fanfiction.” Luz responds with a smile

Amity gasps “Yes oh my gosh yes let's go.” Amity drags Luz up to her room and plops down on the lower bunk of the bunk bed.

Luz smiles, happy she was able to distract her girlfriend from the problem of getting home for the day at least.

The two spent most of the day in Luz’s room reading fanfic, some of it Luz wrote, some of it others wrote, and eventually they decided they were going to write one of their own until Amity came across a Fanfic Luz wrote that she tried to ignore

“Luz I can’t believe you ship those two.” Amity shouts in mock offense

Luz puts her hands up in surrender “In my defense It was way too late into the night when I wrote this one and honestly this is more of a crackfic than anything serious.”

“Still Luz, you paired Hecate and Lucy? Really?”

Luz shrugged “What, its two former villains, one who used to be the protagonist’s friend.”

Amity sighed “Luz, that’d be like me and Boscha dating after everything that’s happened.” She dedpanned

“It’s still a crackfic Batata.” Luz adamantly defends

“You still wrote it though.”

The two stop their bickering as the front door opens “Mija, Amity, I’m home.”

“Well I guess we’ll have this conversation later Luz.” Amity responds as she hops off of Luz’s bed

“Yeah we’ll do this later, lets go help mami with dinner.”

The pair walk down the stairs to meet their Camila and are surprised to see her with a bag of carry out in her hand.

“Hey Mami, didn’t know it was cary out night.”

Camila shakes her head “It wasn’t originally but I changed things up for tonight…come with me to the couch you two.” Camila’s tone switches to something serious “We need to have a talk.”

Without protest due to Camila’s tone the pair sit on the couch across from the older human 

“Mami?” Luz asks confused “What’s  going on?”

Camila sighs “Mija, I know where you were over the summer.”

Luz tries hard to keep her composure “Mami you sent me to reality check camp, it’s where I met Amity and Willow and Gus.”

“Luz, I know you never made it to camp, Now be honest with me, where were you.”

Luz wilts, knowing she’s been caught “Fine, but you won’t believe me when I tell you.”

Camila chuckles “What, a world full of magic, wonder and danger, a world outside of our own where people cast magic from thin air, a world where titans and gods walked through a boiling sea?”

Luz an Amity stare at Camila dumbfounded with their mouths and eyes wide open

“H-How?” Luz asks

“Mija, the same way I know your friend isn’t human.” 

Luz stares at her mother for a moment before she begins connecting dots “You know about the Boiling Isles?”

Camila nods “Indeed I do, Now I will explain how I know about it later, but right now tell me about your summer, and the truth this time.”

Luz and Amity let out a small breath of relief at the knowledge that they don't need to hide so much from Camila.

“Well it all started when I was waiting at the bus stop, of all things to happen an Owl stole my Azura book so I ran after it, without really knowing it at the time I followed Owlbert through a portal door into the Boiling Isles.”
“Owlbert?” Camila interjects

“Eda’s Owl palisman, he goes through Eda’s door to collect Human trash for her to sell.” Luz answers

Camila was about to ask more questions when she remembers something important. “Luz, that reminds me, How do you feel about having a sister?”

Luz looks at Camila in shock “Mami what you talking about? Are you pregnant?”

Camila chuckles “no, no, When you went through the demon realm another person came over here and went to camp in your place…Dios Mio I’m a terrible mother, I couldn’t tell someone took my Daughter’s place for a month, and I sent my daughter to a camp to change who I was.”

Luz hurriedly rushes over to Camila to hug her “no Mami, you aren’t a bad mom, you did what you thought was the best for me…and part of it was my fault, I…” Luz stops as tears start leaking from her eyes.

Amity makes a choice and sits next to Luz before wrapping her in a hug “shh, It’s ok Batata, Let it out.”

Luz and Camila continue to cry in each other's arms for a minute before they both calm down enough to speak.

“Mami, you said another person took my place at camp, who are they?”

Camila takes in a breath “They’re a basilisk.”

Luz and Amity both stare at camila in shock

“Basilisk?” Amity asks incredulously “There’s a Basilisk in the human realm? Luz everyone at that camp is in danger.”

Camila hurriedly places a hand on each girls’ shoulder “What? No no no Vee wouldn’t hurt a fly, she’s a sweetheart like you Luz.”

“But Basilisks are dangerous-the one at hexside nearly killed us.”
“WHAT!?” Camila yells, startling both girls and causing Amity to flinch “Sorry, sorry I shouldn’t have yelled. But please give Vee a chance, she’s just a scared girl, her life on the Isles wasn’t great but that’s her story to tell.”

Luz makes eye contact with Camila for several moments before relenting “Ok Mami, I trust you.”

“Thank you Mija, I don’t expect you to treat her like your sister, but all I’m asking is for you to give her a chance, Now can you please get back to you story about your summer?”

Luz looks at Amity and nods “alright, so I followed Owlbert to the demon realm and ended up in this tent full of human junk…”

Luz had gotten through most of her early adventures on the Isles without too much interruptions until she got to her first trip to Hexside

“HE TRIED TO DO WHAT!?” Camila demanded with a mother’s fury

Amity was suddenly very grateful Luz decided to leave her out of this scene

“Mami please, he didn’t know I was human, he thought I was another abomination, and he didn’t cut me open and everything worked out.”

“Dois Mio this is why I wanted to avoid this world with you.” Camila mumbled under her breath

“Mami, How did you learn about the demon realm?” Luz asked curiously

Camila sighed “Alright, I guess you need to know the truth…when I was fresh out of college I wanted to make a name for myself, and well that didn’t really work out. One day trying to distract myself from a recent failure I tripped and fell into a lake, when I swam back to the surface I found myself not where I was before, I looked up to find orange trees and red gras, and most surprisingly a person standing in front of me, Tan skin, black hair, brown eyes, and pointed ears.”

Luz gasped “You fell through a titan’s blood portal.”

Camila shrugged, “I guess, Alexander helped me out of the lake and took me back to town to make sure I was alright.”

Luz let out a squeal “DAD!?”

Camila nodded “Yes, Your father was from the demon realm Mija.”

Amity looked at Luz in shock “That might explain what we were talking about earlier.”

Camila looked at Luz and Amity in confusion “And what might that be?”

Luz took a deep breath in “I dont have a bile sac yet I can cast magic on my own.”

“Mija, what’s this about a bile sac?”

Amity and Luz stare at Camila “You said dad was a witch yet you don’t know what a bile sac is?”

“Mija, your father didn’t have a bile sac to cast magic.”

Amity looks at Camila in confusion and draws a magenta spell circle before a small abomination appears in front of her.

“That’s not how your father cast magic Mija.” Camila explained

“How did dad do magic then?” Luz asked, her eyes full of curiosity

Camila takes a breath “I don’t know Mija, he just kind of did, whatever form of magic he wanted just sprung from his hands. However what I do know is a way he found for me to do magic.”

Amity and Luz shared a confused look as Camila walked up the stairs and into her room

“Do you think your dad found glyphs like you did?”

Luz shrugged “It’s a possibility…they’re a part of the Isles and if he didn’t have a bile sac or use spell circles then maybe he did.”

Camila returns to the room with a small binder “This was your fathers, he had a notebook at one point but he deemed it too dangerous and tossed it into the boiling sea.”

Luz opens the notebook and gasps when she sees what’s inside “Amity, these are my glyphs.”

“What Mija?” Camila asks, shocked by this development

“I found some of these symbols I found on my own in the Isles.” Luz flipped through the binder and noticed several combinations she hadn’t seen before but she also noticed a few glyphs she knew weren’t in there. “Mami most of these I’ve seen before, these are how I did magic on the Isles until yesterday.”

Camila remembers what Marilyn told her over a month ago “Mija, when you were in the Isles, did you find a black notebook?”

Luz looks up at Camila in confusion for a moment before nodding and running off to her room, quickly returning with Nero’s grimoire “Yeah, Amity’s siblings found this and gave it to me.”

Camila stares at the book in horror

Luz notices the look on her mom’s face “Mami? Are you Ok?’

“Mija…that is your father’s notebook.” Camila speaks, barely audible

“What?”

“Luz, that book, it belonged to Alexander before he decided it was too dangerous to risk falling into the wrong people’s hands.”

Luz stares down at the book in her hands “My dad was Nero?” she asks herself

“Nero was your dad’s family name, a name that held power when I visited the Isles last. Before it’s empire was snuffed out.”

“Empire?” Amity asks curiously, she had always been taught no large form of government had existed on the Isles before Belos came to power.

Camila nodded “Indeed, your father was the heir to the Poly empire, however before you were born the empire was attacked from another empire, one bearing the Wittibane family crest from the Human realm.”

“Wittebane? Like the Wittebane brothers? The witch hunters who disappeared in the 1600s?”

Camila nods and pulls out her phone to show the two infront of her the crest, when she does she watches both girls’ faces drop

“Luz…Thats…” Amity begins

“The emperor’s coven sigil I know Amity.” Luz whispers back

“Luz, what are you talking about?” Camila asked

“Emperor Belos, the person who rules the Boiling Isles, or at least I guess the one Island now, Uses that symbol as the sigil for his coven that rules with an Iron fist.”

“Batata…are you thinking the same thing I am?” Amity asks

Camila chooses not to comment on the nickname yet

“Maybe Amity, I have a lot of thoughts I need to work my way through.” Luz responds as she leaves the room and walks up the stairs.

Amity and Camila look at each other

“Go, you have a better chance of getting through to her. After all, your her ‘friend’” Camila gives Amity a knowing smile at the end of the statement.

Amity blushes as she heads up the stairs to try to find Luz. opening the door to their room Amity finds the room empty and the window open.

Luz sits on the roof of the house, staring off into the horizon when she hears someone sit down next to her, Ghost curling up in Luz’s lap

“Hey, are you ok Batata?” Amity asks as she rests her head on Luz’s shoulder

Luz opens her mouth and almost denies it before shaking her head “I’m not sure, I always wanted to learn more about my dad…but I didn’t expect to learn this. My dad is from the Isles but didn’t use magic like everyone else I’ve met there. Titan used glyphs, He was the heir to his own Empire outside of Belos’ empire. Belos led his coven to destroy the empire my father grew up in. and on top of all of that Belos’ coven uses the family crest of a witch hunting family from the human realm.” Luz begins to breathe heavily “I don’t even know where to begin on how I’m feeling.”

Amity thinks for a moment and pulls Luz into a hug before planting a kiss on the human’s? Forehead “Hey, It’s going to be alright in the end, You don’t have to think about things you don't want to yet, but can we go inside, it looks like it’s about to rain.”

Luz chuckles and kisses Amity’s forehead back “You know the rain here doesn’t boil right?”

Amity nods “Yes, however It’s cold.”

Luz smiles “alright, legs go back inside…I think we need to tell Mami about us now though.”

Amity nervously chuckles as she stands up “Yeah…she may already know.”

Luz looks at Amity

“I didn’t tell her but she gave me the same look Eda did when she would leave us alone in our room at the Owl house.”

Luz nervously smiles “Alright then…lets go do this then.”

Luz and Amity walk down to the first floor and find Camila in the dining room with the take out spread over the table.

Camila looks over as she hears the two come down the stairs“I’m glad you two got in before the rain hit.” Camila smiles at the pair

“Mami, we have something to tell you, Amity…she’s my girlfriend, I’m Bisexual.” Luz nervously speaks. She logically knows that Camila most likely is fine with it but she’s still gripped by this fear that it will go wrong.

Camila gently and warmly smiles at the two “I assumed as much, between the glances I caught and the nicknames, and I’m happy for you Mija. Now lets eat and then you can continue the story of your adventure on the Isles.”

Luz and Amity smile before sitting down next to Camila and eating the chinese take out she brought in. Sharing stories of Luz’s summer while making a conscious effort to avoid or remove some of the more dangerous and nearly deadly story, stopping just before the castle tour, both because of the nature of the adventure and because of how late it was.

Camila wasn’t stupid, she knew her daughter and her girlfriend, an Idea that still excited the woman, were omitting details given their pauses often mid statement, however she was content to let the pair be for now.

In Luz’s room Luz and Amity were getting ready for bed

“Well this is not at all how I thought the day was going to go Amity.”

Amity smiles and pulls Luz into a hug “No it didn’t, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

Luz chuckles as she and Amity lay down on the bottom bunk “Me neither batata.” she responds after a few moments of silence.

The pair are startled apart when Camila enters the room and clears her throat “I love both of you but you aren’t sharing a bed, and this door doesn't get closed when both of you are in here got it?”

Amity turns and impressive shade of tomato and hides her head in her hands as Luz stares at her mom and stutters

“MAMI! WE’RE 14!” the very embarrassed Human protests

Camila chuckles “My rule still stands, goodnight Mijas.”

Luz and Amity refuse to make eye contact with each other as they get into separate bunks

“I thought Eda was bad.” Luz mumbled to herself.

As Amity fell asleep with Ghost in her arms Luz stared at the Palsiman egg on the desk ‘I hope you hatch soon.’ Luz thought to herself as she drifted off to sleep.

Chapter Text

Luz wakes up with a sudden drop, literally, when she rolls over to check her phone where it normally is at the owl house and rolls off of her bed, dropping to the ground with a thud.

Amity startles awake, she was never a heavy sleeper and the sound Luz made when she hit the ground was not quiet. “Luz!? You ok?” she asks as she carefully rolls over to find her girlfriend on the wooden floor

“Mostly.” Luz responds with a groan “Forgot I wasn’t just on the floor in our blanket nest at the Owl house.”

Amity giggles “Do you need help?”

Luz does her best effort to shrug “Maybe? I may also just need a minute or two to wake up.”

“Aren’t you the morning person between the two of us?”

“Yes, but it doesn’t work like that if I’m woken up by falling out of bed.” Luz protests

The door to the room opens softly as Camila walks in “Mija are you alright? Why are you on the floor?”

“Because I rolled out of bed and onto the floor.” Luz responds weakly

Camila chuckles and looks up to Amity “when you two are ready breakfast is ready downstairs.”

Amity nods and climbs down the ladder to help Luz off of the floor

“Also Vee’s coming home today around 3.” Camila adds as she walks out of the room

“Huh, Guess I’m meeting my new sister today.” Luz thinks out loud as she pushes herself off of the floor

As the pair walk down the stairs they are met with a stack of steaming pancakes on the table in front of Camila

“Morning Mijas, did you sleep well?” Camila asks as she places a plate in front of both girls

Luz beings piling pancakes with various toppings onto her plate with a smile “I slept ok until I woke up on the floor.” Luz chirps cheerfully

Amity looks at the pancake stack “Uh Luz, what are these?”

Luz looks up at Amity for a moment before she realizes something “Oh Amity you’ve never had pancakes before, they’re amazing, they’re basically breakfast cakes with different toppings you can put on them.” Luz explains “These ones have nuts in them, these ones have chocolate chips, mostly similar to your coca chunks, and these ones have bananas in them…I never found anything similar on the Isles to those.”

Amity nods and hesitantly picks up one of each of the pancakes with her fork before carefully taking a bite of each one, letting out a pleased humm with the banana and chocolate chip pancakes. “These are amazing Camila.”

Camila smiles “Thank you Cariño, I made enough for all of us so don’t feel like you have to make sure we eat, However I do have a few questions for you, mostly about yourself Biology and culture wise.”

Amity nods and takes another small bite of a banana pancake 

“How old are you?” Amity looked around Luz’s age to Camila but with enough fantasy stories giving elves much longer lifespans than humans Camila wasn’t sure, she had no problem with Amity and Luz if they were around the same age but she was…less so if Amity was much older than Luz.

Amity swallowed before responding “14, my birthday was a few months ago.”

Camila nodded and let out a small sigh of relief

“Alright, and my second question is how did you two actually get together? I’ve heard your story up until now but I’m curious about how it actually happened.”

Amity and Luz both blushed “It’s…slightly embarrassing but from what we’ve pierced together we kind of both accidentally confessed while sleeping.”

Camila looks at Amity and Luz, very interested in the story now

Amity sighs and decides to bite the bullet “From what Luz told me the morning after I woke her up at some point by talking in my sleep, and through playing along with me she learned I was preparing a wedding in my dream…” Amity tried to avoid saying the awkward fact that she was dreaming of her and Luz’s wedding before they were even together

Camila gives the pair of girls a knowing smile, a smile that tells Luz Camila already knows whose wedding it was without having to ask. “And you Luz?”

Luz shrugged “Mine wasn’t nearly as grand as Amity’s but I apparently called Amity an ‘Awesome girlfriend.’ while dreaming of my palisman…and oddly enough I was right about what it was, I carved an egg just like my dream…maybe I should take oracle classes when we get back to hexside.”

Amity briefly shudders at the mention of the oracle track, memories of her mother using the track of magic on her flooding back.

"Batata? What's wrong?" Luz asks in concern

Amity shakes her head "I'm fine Luz…just some Memories."

"Ames talk to me, I'm not going to be upset." Luz assures her girlfriend, trying to gently get her to open up

"My m-Odalia was in the oracle coven and she used it to keep an eye on me when I was younger." Amity absentmindedly rubbed her necklace that replaced the oracle pendant

Luz stood up and walked over to Amity "Amity I’m so sorry I didn’t know, can I touch you?" 

Amity pauses for a moment and nods, quickly melting into her girlfriend's embrace. "I used to have a pendant that she could use to talk to me through, it was another extension of the control she had over me until you came." Amity admitted

Camila softly gasped and walked over to Amity "Cariño do you realize how bad that is?"

Amity nods "I didn't at the time but I do now, Luz and Eda helped me unlearn a lot."

Camila nodded and pulled both girls into a hug "that's good, and if anything ever happens my door is always open for you Cariño."

Amity nods and lets a small smile touch her face, happy to feel what a mother is supposed to be like “Thank you Camila, It means a lot.”

Camila smiles “I know what it’s like to have a controlling mother but yours is so much worse than mine was.”

“Is that why we haven’t seen Abuela that I can remember?” Luz asks

Camila briefly nods but tries to focus back on her daughter’s girlfriend “We can talk about Noceda family drama later Mija, Right now I think I have something the two of you will love.” Camila takes a step back and walks up to her room

Amity and Luz share a confused expression as Camila returns with a wrapped box

“I was going to give this to you after you returned from camp but well…I figured this was the right time for it.” Camila speaks as she hands Luz the box

Luz looks up at Camila in confusion before returning her attention to the box and slowly pulling back the wrapping paper. After pulling a particularly large piece of wrapping paper off of the front of the box Luz gasps “Mami is this…?”

Camila smiles and nods “Yep, they released the 6th book not long after you supposedly left for camp.” Camila finishes with a playful glare

Luz lets out an embarrassed smile “Yeah I deserved that, thank you so much Mami, I’ve been waiting for this one since the cliffhanger in the 5th one.”

Amity stares in awe at the book as camila chuckles

“I know Mija, I remember you demanding to send a letter to the publishers about the cliffhanger.” Camila pulls out her phone “Mija, I’ve got to go to the clinic today but I’ll be back before Vee gets home ok?”

Luz nods and looks down at her book “Amity you want to go read this?”

Amity stares at Luz “If I ever answer no i”ve either been replaced or I’m having a really bad day.”

Luz giggles and drags Amity up to their room.

Camila smiles and shakes her head as she walks out the front door.

Several hours later after the girls have had lunch they sat in front of a whiteboard 

“Ok.” Luz began “So my dad was from the Isles, heir to an empire on a different Titan most likely, before the empire was invaded and destroyed by Belos. Belos’s coven uses the Wittebane family crest as their sigil, and the Wittebane family were a group of witch hunters who had a pair of brothers disappear, supposedly being lead to another world by an ‘evil witch’.”

Amity nods and looks at one of the photos attached to the board “And one more thing, Hunter bears a striking resemblance to Caleb Wittebane and he called Belos his uncle.”

Luz stares at Amity as her Jaw drops “this adds so many answers and so many questions.” Luz began furiously scribbling on the whiteboard “Ok the first theory, also the most far fetched is that Belos is Philip Wittebane, which would perfectly explain Hunter looking like an exact copy of Caleb and calling Belos his uncle, however Humans don’t live nearly long enough for this theory to be real without Belos finding something to exponentially extend his life.”

“And the other theories?” Amity asks

“Well the obvious next step is that Both Belos and Hunter are descendants of the Wittebane brothers, doesn’t quite explain Belos being Hunter’s uncle but that’s not the biggest problem.”

Camila walked through the front door and stopped by the living room where Luz had set up the whiteboard “Mija How was your day?”

Luz smiled and walked over to Camila before giving her a hug “It was good, Thank you for the book It was amazing.”

Camila chuckles and hugs her daughter back before looking at the board “So what is this?”

“With what we know this is everything we’ve put together about Belos, there’s still a lot we dont know yet but we know more than we did yesterday.”

Camila nodded as she let go of Luz “alright, If you need any help I’ll help if I can but history was never my strong suit, either way Vee should be getting back from camp soon.”

Vee hopped off the bus and said goodbye to her cabin 7 camp friends, she had ended up telling them part of the truth, they knew that Vee took Luz’s place at the camp but were told that she was Luz’s twin sister. As she opened the front door to her new home she was hit with the smell of something delicious…and the smell of magic?

“Mom I’m Home.” Vee called out from the front door

“Welcome home cariño, come into the kitchen there’s someone I want you to meet.” Camila responds

Vee walks into the kitchen and nearly jumps in surprise as she comes face to face with the real Luz and a purple haired witch “h-hey, you must be the real Luz.”

Luz nods and gives Vee a sincere smile “You must be Vee, It’s nice to meet you, Mami told me a lot about you.”

Vee looks nervously to Camila before returning her attention back to Luz and the witch behind her that is glaring at the basilisk “I’m guessing you know what I am then?”

Luz nods and extends her hand “Yep, but I’ve also learned that what you are born as doesn’t define you, and Mami promised you were a nice person who needed a second chance.”

Vee visibly relaxed slightly “thank you…I know your friend behind you isn’t too trusting of me and I don’t blame her…basilisks don’t have a great history.”

The witch shakes her head “I’m Amity, Luz’s girlfriend, and I care less about the stories and more about my experiences.”

Vee looks at the pair in confusion

“While I was in the demon realm our school was attacked by a greater basilisk…Amity was one of the first people to be drained.”

Vee’s eyes widen in recognition and horror “Yeah…that was #1, she grew resentful of witches and decided to get revenge when we escaped…I don’t blame you for not trusting me but I promise I’m not like her, we’re not even really the same species.”

Amity, Luz, and Camila stare at vee in confusion.

Vee lets out a breath and slowly transforms back to her true form “#1 was a greater basilisk, I’m what was called a ‘fat tailed basilisk’ if the guards were right, there were 7 of us and we were all different species of basilisks.”

Camila nodded “Alright well we can talk about this later, for now lets eat and you can tell us about camp Vee.”

Vee nodded and followed the pair of humans and witch, still giving Amity space knowing she doesn’t trust vee yet.
