Meeting Your Past

Summary:

"No way you're my future self." The preschooler glared as he scrutinized the taller boy.

"Sorry to disappoint, but I am." He sighed.

"You're lying, I already saw you together with them. There's no way we didn't grow up to be as tall as Mouri-chan and Suzuki-san." The preschooler crossed his arms.

"Can't you just listen to me? It's more complicated than that." His eye was beginning to twitch.

Chapter Text

.

Space, the great frontier of the unknown. At a certain point in history, mankind chose to brave the frontier and race to see who could get out to the moon. That race gave birth to the latest of technology people have come to use today. That is in a world we are all familiar with. But, in one world, a single person ran this race and took a completely different route. One person who remains anonymous to this day had thought, "If the world is so focused on space, then I'll be the one to breach the unknowns of time."

So that's what that person did. Using H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine" as the inspiration, that person sought to make that masterpiece of literature a reality. But after the end of the Space Age, when the excitement was dying down and people were moving on from the moon, something happened. In a quick burst of energy that radiated all around the world, temporarily scrambling just about every electronic device, causing the animals to be frenzied, and young children to cry, that person made a huge error. Time had been successfully conquered, or so the thought went, but the experiment blew up in a way that no one could predict.

Now every country tried to find the source, but the energy was new and unique. No point of origin could ever be found. Those in power thought it was an attack, but when no one came forward with information and nothing happened for a good while, they dismissed it completely. Or so they would have liked to do so. When they were just about ready to call it quits, the first signs of the new energy's effect began to happen. A year after the pulse, reports of billions of youths going missing without reason occurred. This was dubbed as, "The Year of the Vanished."

Now like the name implies, the vanished were all children, teens, and young adults, the youngest being about 3 to the oldest about 21 years of age. These children all disappeared at a random time of the day that the charts showed no correlation between when they disappeared. There was however, a correlation in the amount of time, this was a full 24 hours exactly. The reports of the youth all claimed about the same, "I blinked and it was already the next day." These cases kept happening as the years went on, showing absolutely no sign of stopping.

The science community had an field day with this, studying the brand new energy that surrounded the world. Unfortunately, they couldn't understand what it was no matter what they did. It wouldn't be found out until more than a decade later, when a young girl of 5-years of age appeared in Britain crying for her mum. When found and asked for her name and information, they contacted the family and they came rushing immediately. Their thoughts were along the lines of, 'Is my daughter alright? Did she not make it to school? Why is she with the authorities?'

The girl cried upon seeing them for the first time, running up to hug her mother. She seemed different, a little more wrinkled than she remembered, but she knew that was her mother and father standing right in front of her. To say they were shocked when they got there was an understatement, they were absolutely in denial. "This isn't our daughter! She is 15, not 5!" They would repeatedly deny this which only caused the girl to cry in desperation saying, that it was really her. When the girl shared something only they as a family knew about, they accepted it. They took care of her for about a week before she disappeared without a trace and the present remained unchanged. This was the first case of many.

Over the years, people had begun to remember the disappearances and related it to the cases of young children popping up and claiming they are that person who, at this point, was much older now. This information was the push the science community needed, and so they adopted the name that often appeared when dealing with time and space, as well as the hypothetical, tachyon particles, unofficially known as Time Travel energy.

.

Now why am I sharing a bunch of history you ask? Well, this is the exact world that began after the space race, where the future generations began to accept this new outcome as the normal.

Now fast forward to today, a year where technological advances thrive in the form of cellphones, video blog, and memes that roam the world wide web. We currently see in the home of Professor Hiroshi Agasa, a young Japanese boy in a baby blue preschool uniform pinned with a sakura badge butting heads with a slightly taller, familiar boy in his iconic blue suit, red bowtie, and black spectacles.

"I bet you're an imposter, trying to convince me you're me, big Shinichi who didn't grow. You're probably Moriarty's apprentice fighting against me, Sherlock's apprentice. Or you're a lying short, tiny old man." The preschooler points his finger in an accusatory way.

That ticked a nerve in him, "Do I look like a short old man to you!?"

"You could be disguised to look like me."

"AUGUHH!" He messes up his hair in frustration.

"See, you got mad, it proves I'm right."

"Just stop! I'm Kudo Shinichi of the future! You're me of the past."

"Proof. Evidence. I want concrete evidence."

He sighs, this was not what he wanted to deal with today. Of all the times to meet his past self for the first time, it had to be when he was under the guise of Edogawa Conan. At least it's him, if his other selves were to appear, this would be even more dangerous.

.

Now there are a few things I almost forgot to mention. Among the normal disappearances, there are those that are outliers. Most people, they disappear only once. But there are rare occasions that a person can disappear more times. On record, the most has been three. Off record, Shinichi has disappeared a total of four times... So far at least. The other, even rarer for those who disappeared more than once, they can appear in the present together or around the same time. One famous rare case reported a man in Canada had met his 12-year-old and his 3-year-old self in the same day.

So rewind a bit to when Conan up and ran off with his young preschooler self in hand, he missed someone who had just appeared in the stairwell of the Mouri Detective Agency. Standing just outside the Mouri's apartment was a teenage Kudo Shinichi who was unsure why he was here.

"Shinichi?!"

"Uh, hey Ran." He rubbed the back of his head smiling sheepishly.

"Kudo?" Sonoko was shocked and Mouri Kogoro did a double take. Before he did anything, Ran stopped him and looked Shinichi over.

"You're not my Shinichi, are you?"

He blinked, hanging on the words, 'my Shinichi.' His mind put some pieces together, unfortunately blurting aloud with her father and Sonoko next to her, "We're dating?!"

"You're what?!" Kogoro's eyes widened with fury before Ran stopped her dad.

"Ohh Ran, admitting he's your husband already?" She snickered.

"SONOKO!" She yelled before turning her dad to explain, "This must be past Shinichi. He probably disappeared last year or the year before." Then she turned to Shinichi and asked, "What's the last thing you remember?"

"Graduation was the other day and we were going to start high school tomorrow?"

"So that's why I couldn't find you on the first day. I thought we would be late!" She giggled.

"Yeah, you nearly got all of us in trouble on the first day!" Sonoko huffed, but didn't mean it much.

Shinichi didn't hear them though, his thoughts hung again on what had happened. He could only blush embarrassed, not just at Ran's comment but also at the fact she didn't correct her father.

"Way to go me!" He thought happily.

A yell got him out of his thoughts, "Wait a minute… If you're here… Then Shinichi's nearby!"

Immediately Ran dashed out the door, grabbing the younger teen's wrist and began their search for her Shinichi.

Meanwhile, back at Agasa's, Conan continually grunted in frustration at the stubbornness of his younger self.

.

Notes:

So there is actually more to this, but I think I ended up explaining way too much. A bunch of paragraphs ended up getting cut out. If you're curious, these are the rules for this world. I'll try to keep them simple.

1. The Past Person Is Unaffected - When person of the past gets sent back to their time, they're basically reset as if they never met their future self.

2. The Past Person Can Appear At Any Point In Their Future - So long as they're living, they have the potential to appear. The most common time frame is appearing between 10 to 25 years from current age. Anything less or more is uncommon to rare.

3. The Past Person Will Appear In Front Or Nearby Present Person's Last Position - If the present person is stationary, the past person can appear in front of them. If moving, they'll appear from behind. Think of it like a homing beacon.

4. The Amount Of Time They Disappear Does Not Correlate To How Long They Stay In Their Future - The most common time frame ranges from as little as 24 hours (never less) to as long as a month. Anything more is uncommon to rare.

So yep, what did you think? Is this idea too out there? If there's anything you want to know more about, feel free to let me know in the comments. As always, thank you so much for reading! See you next chapter! :D

Chapter 2: A Reflection Of The Past

Notes:

So I completely forgot I had a few more things written this. It's nothing really big, just some small snippets and looks at how a few others react to meeting their past, plus their similarities or differences. Again, it's only some things I left out since it didn't fit, but at the same time, there isn't much here. But here you go, enjoy!!

GIN

There were a lot of things people could say about their coworker and higher up Organization member, Gin. He was cold, ruthless, loyal to a fault, and most of all, he’s good at what he does. There were also things one could say about the man they knew as Gin, he was forgetful about pretty much anything that didn’t have to do with work and forgetful once the person that was offed was no more. These were the qualities that they knew of the man, a 24/7 loyally work-minded man who was good at moving on. Well, they would get a surprise on a break when for the first time, he was meeting his younger self. Gin was resting on a couch in their break room when right in front of him the boy popped up.

It was interesting, they both stared at each other and then Gin patted the chair inviting the boy to sit. The boy simply obeyed, not much complaint or care about his situation.

The people noted that he and Gin did not change. They had their sharp yet sleepy eyes, long golden hair which looked silver sometimes when the light hit it just right, and the boys both seemed to have a no care attitude. Vermouth was quite amused at the lack of change between the two. Vodka could only fuss that this would probably ruin their plans for a mission later. Gin, he could care less.

The boy was quiet, wasn’t much of a talker, though he was observant and thinking a lot. They guessed Gin was more quieter back then.

This was going to be an interesting 24 hours or longer, depending on when the boy disappears back to the past.

.

HATTORI HEIJI

Hattori Heiji was many things, smart and hot headed, wearing his heart on his sleeves, expect when it came to his feelings for Kazuha. But to think his younger self would be the one to propose to Kazuha, declare his love before he even got a chance? Now that was the most embarrassing proposal to be girlfriend and boyfriend. Apparently his younger self’s logic was this:

“S'not like I’ll remember anything when I get back, so I’m going to go all out! She’ll won't know anything until later anyway.”

How embarrassing.

.

SUZUKI SONOKO

When Suzuki Sonoko was 9, she experienced her first disappearance from her time. She often wondered when and where she went, also what she did in that year. Though, she was upset it happened at that moment because she was right in the middle of pushing Ran-chan and Shinichi-kun to get together because the detective, soccer geek had been ignoring her best friend lately.

But now she wasn’t so mad cause the moment she disappeared is the moment that she and her older self would witness something rather intimate between her two friends. When she appeared right in front of her older self, she noticed her and other classmates excitedly gazing at something right behind her. So, she turned around, and there she did see two familiar but definitely older figures. There, standing on the deck of a temple, she believed was located in Kyoto, is the detective geek Shinichi and her best friend Ran who decided to take the initiative and pull in Shinichi for a kiss first. Both Suzuki girls squeaked in delight before the older girl noticed her younger self. The two simply snickered at each other, sending each other signs of approval at what had just transpired before the teacher came over to talk with her and the newest addition to the school’s party. They sulked that they couldn’t follow the two, but she was definitely grilling Ran later.

When they finally got back to Beika-cho, had little Sonoko say hi to the family again, and finally got together with Ran, they grilled her about her personal moment with Shinichi. Over the rest of the few days that the tiny heiress was around, they did all they could to make her blush and admit to a “wedding” and that Shinichi is her “husband.” Somehow, they were even able to give the chibi brat, Conan, 2nd hand embarrassment and a beet red face. Anything to annoy him was a plus in her book. Her small self did mention that while hanging out with his kiddie group, that he reminded her of a small Shinichi. They soon questioned if that was actually him from the past too. Though they never got any proof, so that was a dead end.

Overall, Sonoko enjoyed every experience with her 9-year-old self, the perfect shopping companion, and best 2nd voice to her thoughts and teasing.

Chapter 3: To The Future

Notes:

Hi everyone! Happy New Year! It's been awhile and I finally have something new to share, or really something new for an older idea. Chapter Text

.

"I do." The bride looks lovingly in her love's eyes.

"I do." The groom looks lovingly in his love's eyes.

"You may now kiss the bride!"

Everyone was clapping and cheering, congratulating the happy couple. Over on the side, a boy in a blue tuxedo with the same hairstyle as the groom, was watching the events play out in awe, a weird feeling washing over him as he saw the beautiful union come together. All he could really think of was their embrace and the ceremony, how much he wished he could be in his position for even just a minute.

After the kiss, the man turns over to him and quickly speaks, "Not your turn yet. You still have a lot to do before you can be in my position. For now, enjoy yourself and have fun while you're here."

Right… Fun… It's hard when the wedding is one you wished for for the longest time. How did this all start again with him being here? Oh right, it was because he was trying to have "fun" in the first place:

.

He was groaning, the last thing he remembered was the giant headache from getting slammed in the face by the soccer ball he failed to notice flying in his direction.

"Are you okay?"

"Haii…" He really wasn't. If anything, he wanted to lay down and just be done with the soccer game since he had been too distracted to play properly against the Shounen Tantei-dan. Earlier, he and Ran had another one of their little arguments and then he had to play it down as Conan, acting as if nothing happened. So to take his mind off of the argument, he made an excuse and met up with the group to play. It was troublesome when he did something to make her upset, again, but his Conan life and Shinichi life were two separate things. Any falter of his character would cause Ran to be suspicious, again.

"You should really sit down Shinichi, or is it Conan-kun at the moment?"

"Huh?" His head must have been really off because he thought he was hearing Ran speak. Unless Haibara was using his bow tie to mess with him… Wait… did he just hear?

"I guess from the glasses, it's definitely "Conan." Am I right?" She giggled while preforming air quotes with her fingers saying his name, smiling down sweetly at him.

"Ran?! How-w, wait, whaaa? Ehh?!" Ran giggled at the response, looks like she was alone in a room and now that he got a better look at her, she was in a…

"You're in a… in a…" He blushed, embarrassed yet couldn't stop himself from grinning sillily.

"A wedding dress? Do you like it, "Conan-kun?"" She was giggling again, asking him in such a teasing manner.

"Wait? How?"

She shook her head, "Well, I guess you really did disappear a few times as you after all."

"Disappear? I only disa-," The reply died in his mouth as his mind finally caught up. He realized what she meant and that it had happened again. He was having some kind of record over here. Hopefully the world record committee never caught wind of this.

"That's right, you disappeared during your time as Conan too and ended up here. You know, it makes so much sense now."

"Huh?"

"That's a secret. You'll find out later anyway." She answered playfully.

"But, what am I-? What about the-"

"Oi, Ran! I think I forgot my bow tie in here!" He recognized it, that was his voice!

"Come in, just don't look. Remember, it's not good to look at the bride until I'm walking down the aisle."

"Yeah, I know." So, in he walked, a much older Shinichi who had honored his word and kept his eyes closed.

After fixing his bow tie and collar, she promptly carried Conan, who was still getting over his immense shock, and placed him in his arms. "Oh and Shinichi, here, put him in that position."

"Wha, wait, Ran?" But Shinichi was promptly pushed outside, the door locked behind him while holding someone little in his arms.

He opened his eyes and blinked, "Huh…"

"That's all you have to say?"

"I didn't think I disappeared here."

"So, marrying huh?"

"Yep."

"She knows?"

"Yep."

"Got drop kicked I bet?"

"Oh you know it, and much more."

"So… Everything with the o…"

"Yep."

"Huh…"

"Yeah…"

Given how his conversations went with his younger selves, he was surprised by how calm both of them were being right now.

"So, what position was Ran talking about?"

"Oh, right… I still wasn't quite over this yet. But hey, let's make the most of the 24 plus hours you'll be around until then!" Shinichi smiled, somewhat of an uncharacteristic Kaitou KID like smile if "Conan" was being honest.

"Seems you've been hanging around KID then?"

"Oh, a little more than you know. You'll come to find that we'll have more in common down the line."

"Right…"

"But enough about that, I do really think that this timing is so impeccable. The boy who was given the position got sick and isn't able to make it, so now that you're here…"

Conan thought about it, putting the clues together, that this was a wedding and the only positions of children there were, he concluded, "You want me to be the-"

"That's right." He smiled and promptly carried his younger self away.

So, that's how he ended up here, wearing the suit that suspiciously fit him to a tee, holding the pillow which held the two, top quality and very much like each other to get, rings for both Ran and he. He was the little Ring Bearer, which was kind of fitting in a odd way. He was basically giving himself the permission for the wedding, probably what his future self was thinking too.

Whenever he gets sent back to his time, he has a feeling that somehow, he'd remember something about this day.

.

Notes:

So this is what I came up with. Shinichi meets up with his past and Conan meets up with his future. I honestly hadn't thought of much more beyond this point, so that's all I got for this idea for now! If there's anything you want to know more about, feel free to let me know in the comments. As always, thank you so much for reading! :D

Edit: I realize, I may have gotten the idea partially from, "Doraemon Stand By Me 2"???

Chapter 4: Minute Changes In The Present

Notes:

Hi all! So I'm cleaning and going through my old drafts of other fics and decide to check this one. So guess what I found? This draft has been sitting since spring of last year. Oops? Well anyway, I thought, why not just share it, even if there are probably many missed mistakes? Enjoy!

Chapter Text

.

In another timeline that didn’t have to deal with the time travel displaced, and only the scientific marvel of the shrinking detective, it would take a simple deduction to get Shinichi out of his predicament with the professor on that rainy night after the Tropical Land incident. But because this is a world dealing with that inclusion, certain events he had to deal with after his predicament play out slightly different.

.

THE DOC'S REACTION

“Hakase!” The little boy yells excitedly seeing his next door neighbor, scientist and inventor, Hiroshi Agasa.

“Who are you… Wait… Shinichi?” The man is surprised at the sight.

“Thank goodness! I thought I’d never be able to get inside.” Shinichi stops commenting when he notices Hakase looking around, “What’s wrong?”

“Oh, I’m just looking for you.”

“But I’m right in front of you.”

“No, not you, but older you, who’s about ten years older.”

“Wait wait wait, you think I’m…” His eyes lit up in realization at what the professor was implying. “No! You got it all wrong! It’s me, Shinichi! I didn’t come from the past. It’s actually me!”

“Hmm? Nice try Shinichi, we’ll just wait at my place for him to get back.”

“But Hakase! Wait, I can prove it!” So Shinichi does so, first by pointing out secrets that he knew about the professor’s personal information. Though that just makes him upset, cause he remembered making little Shinichi promise to keep it secret long ago. So next, he begins his deduction, proving his abilities in how he knew he was out eating and was running on a particular street to make it home. The specific details included the mud upon the cuffs of his pants and the sauce still lingering upon his beard as evidence.

“Wow, Shinichi! That was really impressive! But I still have to take you in so we can wait for you.”

Shinichi’s eye twitches, annoyed by the fact that he was still not being believed. It was bad enough that the security at Tropical Land didn’t believe him, thinking he was either an orphan or a visitor from the past. But he still relents and allows the professor to take him into his house, as he comes up with another way to prove himself as the present day article.

Before stepping inside, that’s when he remembers, “Wait, I can really prove I’m actually older me. I'll tell you exactly what happened yesterday when you came over.”

So he did, recounted the morning and how the Professor was testing his jet-pack which he crashed into the library. Then he even retraced their steps and relayed their conversation nearly word for word. If that didn’t prove his point, then he wasn’t sure what would?

“Shin-Shinichi-kun? It’s really you?!”

“That’s what I’ve been saying all along.”

.

Though the rest of the events play out normally, from retrieving his old elementary school uniform and being warned to keep a low profile, another such instance of a minor change happens during the encounter with Mouri Ran.

.

RAN'S REACTION

“This boy… is so cute!” Shinichi of course blushes with an embarrassed glee in her hold.

“Shinichi, you never told me that you disappeared when you were six.”

“Ah Ran-kun, that’s not-“

Shinchi gets out of her hold and immediately his back hugs the bookshelf as she draws closer. “Ah, I’m not Shinichi!”

She playfully smiles, “Ah, you can’t fool me.”

Hakase coughs lightly, “I’m sorry to tell you Ran-kun, but he really isn’t. He’s actually a-“

“Distant cousin! Shinichi-niichan is my cousin. I was visiting today, but he wasn’t home.”

“Cousin?”

She smiles wryly, humoring the boy, “If that’s so, then what’s your name?”

“Uh, uh? My name? It’s…” He looks at the shelf behind him seeing two names upon different books, “My name is, Edogawa Conan.”

“Conan? Like the author?"

“Yeah, my parents are just as big mystery fans as Shinichi-niichan and his parents.”

“Right..." She's still skeptical as she asks, "...and Edogawa? Like the river?”

“It’s from okaasan’s side of the family. I got her last name.”

“Really?” Her gaze became intensively perplexed.

In a desperate act, he decided to play the part of a scared child and hide behind Hakase’s leg, “Oneesan is scary.”

“Come now, Ran. If this really was young Shinchi, he’d have to be close by. Remember, that’s how it works?”

She thinks a little, finally dropping it, “I guess.”

“Say, could you take care of him until Shinichi-kun gets back?”

.

After the agreement, Ran’s confession, and Conan nearly blabbing the truth, Mouri Kogoro’s interrupts. Though, when he falls down the stairs and everyone hops into the taxi, his reaction is not one of a fool.

.

KOGORO'S REACTION

“Oi, Ran! What are you doing here?”

Ran’s annoyed by her father’s tone as she replies, “I came cause he hopped into the car.”

Kogoro looks down to see the little boy who is cheering very happily about the car ride. His eyes grow wide and become skeptical.

“What’s the chibi version of the brat detective doing here?”

“That’s not Shinichi, believe it or not. He's his cousin.”

"Yeah right. Whatever, he's bothering me so just get him out of here!"

"Oh sure, I'll just toss him out the window, in the middle of the highway!"

.

Notes:

You can probably tell the draft wasn't quite finished, still wanted to share anyway. This takes a good look at minor changes in Shinichi's life because of the sort-of-kind-of time travel at play in the world and their lives. In this situation, Ran and her dad would most definitely peg Shinichi as himself, but not really think he shrunk. If I continued this, Ran's main theory would be that he's a Shinichi who's got a prolonged vacation in the present.

She would only stop thinking that way when he accidentally slips up about their, "gorilla" of a teacher, plus other little hints during his stay with them. Then she starts believing Conan is actually her Shinichi. Her main theory would probably be, a glitch in the time travel matrix is what caused Shinichi to revert back to a six year old.

That's all I found for this in my old drafts. If there's anything you want to know more about, feel free to let me know in the comments. As always, thank you so much for reading! :D
