He fully expected to perish in Valla. How he manages to escape with his heretofore unknown daughter Lilith, both of them maimed but alive, he does not know. He feels weighed down and buoyant all at once.
Selena, Laslow, and Odin, when he finds them, appear just as shocked at the fact he's still alive as he feels.
