Chapter 9: T is for the Twins

Summary:

This is a backstory that I think fits with the canon about Lily and Todney. How they got the family members, mainly because the others in their family don't really look like them.

Notes:

TW for violence and mentions of cannibalism
The family episode is unironically my favorite because of how unsettling it is. The whole episode makes it so the viewer is uncomfortable and sympathetic towards the main trio because we feel they are in danger. The set and puppet designs are extremely effective in this way, and I just realized that I haven't even written anything about them, even though they're my favorite teachers.

Chapter Text

“So hungry…” A little boy muttered as his stomach growled loudly.

“I know, Todney, but it shouldn’t be too much longer.” A little girl said, kneeling down next to him, staring out a window. She held a big net in her hands and looked poised to toss it out the window whenever necessary.

“Thank you, Lily, you’re the best sister ever.” Todney said, and sat up to help her with the net.

The children looked extremely similar, and if not for their differing hairstyles, it would have been difficult to tell them apart. They both had blonde hair and pale skin, with the only color being the rosiness in their cheeks. They had matching maroon sweaters that said the first initial of their names, respectively.

Lily’s hair was done in braids that rested on her shoulders, and Todneys’ was loose and fell in his face.

“If only Mother was here to hunt for us.” Todney whined, glancing back at the kitchen table. “Then she could get us the Family Tub at Graulton’s Chicken.”

“Yes, if only.” Lily agreed, more focused on glaring out the window than what her brother was saying

“Maybe we could order it.” Todney suggested, looking hopefully at his sister.

“No, Todney.” Lily said dismissively. “We’re not a whole family, and you know what Mother said about lying about family.”

“We’re almost a whole family! We just need a Father and a Brother and a Grandmother and a Mother and aunts and uncles and cousins!” Todney listed, counting off on his fingers.

“Well, we don’t have any of those things, so this is how we have to live.” Lily spoke while she shifted her body weight as she spotted something outside of the window. In a flash, her net was flying and she pulled it taught as something struggled on the other end. She had managed to catch some wild beast. “Todney, help me with this!”

It took a moment for the two kids to manage to pull the writhing creature in through the window, as they both only had the strength of children. Once they did, they could see it was an old woman, not some wild animal, that could barely speak from missing teeth.

“Oh, Lily, I think we shall eat well tonight.” Todney said, mouth salivating at the thought of a full meal. He hadn’t eaten in so long.

“Doesn’t she look a bit like Grandmother?” Lily asked suddenly, staring at the wriggling woman.

“Why, yes, she does, Lily!”

The two barely had to talk to know what the other was thinking. That was the advantage of living together for so long, they were very close, much closer than most siblings were.

“Are you thinking what I’m thinking, Todney?”

“Yes, I am, Lily.”

“Why don’t you sing her the nighttime song, Todney?”

Todney smiled and began to sing in a warbling voice, “La la la laaa, la la la laaa…”

As he sang, Grandmother’s muscles began to relax and her eyes closed softly. When she was finally asleep, the twins put her in a wheelchair that they found in the closet.

Every time she woke up, they had to sing the nighttime song again to make her less violent, so Todney thought of a better solution. They had seen it on TV before, and it wasn’t very difficult to find. The IV bag came with some sort of calming drug that made her sleep often and speak less.

Once Grandmother was done, the twins went searching for other members of the family. Father was next, and he was the easiest. They didn’t have to go far to find someone that fits the profile; cranky, small, and shits his pants a lot. That’s how their father used to be. The one that filled the role now was a very small one, maybe even a child.

Father came with a Brother as well. A man came looking for the child pretty soon, tall with similar features. A Brother was supposed to be protective and intimidating.

Next was a Mother, which proved to be tricky. It took the twins a very long time to find someone that would fit the role; kind and considerate.

They had to replace many family members over this time, including a few cousins and uncles and even Father and Brother a few times. They always made sure that they fit the role, and fit the FAULBCHDT (Family, Advise, Unit, Landlines and Learning to share, Bunk Beds, Cooking, Haircuts, Devotion, Twins).

After a long time, the twins finally found someone that did fit the role of Mother. Unfortunately, he came with an annoying duck and a clingy red thing that they had to get rid of first, which didn’t take too long.

Once they finally had every necessary family member, it was time.
Todney’s stomach growled, but both twins were too focused on Mother to say anything about it. They had dressed the Yellow Guy up to look more like Mother, since he already acted like her.

They made Mother dial the number to Graulton’s Chicken, which she did while screaming for help. They made her put in the order for a Family Tub, which promptly burst through a hole in the ceiling.

The twins stared at the delicious chicken, eyes watering. They were so hungry. Their hunger took over their physical forms, mostly their faces, and they became ravenous, dangerous beasts. They saw the other family members except for Mother do the same, devouring the tub greedily.

They didn’t hear the other man enter the room, nor did they hear when Mother left. They died with their mouths full of chicken, torn apart by the hungry man.

The whole family died that day, including the twins. They had lived for so long and been hungry for the whole time, so they didn’t really care.
