Welcome to the 2023 AO3 Ship Stats!

As part of the AO3 Ship Stats project, this list shows the 100 most-posted relationship tags on Archive Of Our Own in the period August 4 2022 - August 7 2023. This list was created by comparing the current number of fics with data gathered for the 2022 AO3 Ship Stats.

There are 58 M/M relationships on the list, 11 F/M, 8 F/F, 18 Gen and 5 Other. (Please note that on AO3, ‘Name & Name’ indicates platonic or familial ‘Gen’ relationships, while ‘Name/Name’ is used for romantic and sexual pairings.)

Of the 204 names on the list, 30 are women, 2 are non-binary, and 3 are characters of ambiguous gender, compared with 25, 1 and 6 in the 2022 list. In total there are 102 white characters, 67 Asian characters, 6 Latino characters, 6 Middle Eastern or North African characters, 4 Black characters, and 2 Indigenous characters, as well as 10 racially ambiguous characters and 8 non-human characters. There are 84 total Characters of Colour, which is 13 more than the number listed in 2022.

As part of the August 2023 AO3 Ship Stats, here are the Top 100 F/F pairings with the most total works on Archive Of Our Own.

Of the 201 names on this list, there are 120 white characters, 37 Asian characters, 10 Latino characters, 7 Black characters, 7 Indigenous characters, and 3 Middle Eastern or North African characters, as well as 6 racially ambiguous characters and 15 characters with non-human skin tones. There are 60 Characters of Colour in total, up from 58 in the 2022 list.

Because of the way I produced this data, there is a small chance some F/F ships are missing, particularly those in fandoms dominated by other categories of ship. For more information, see the project FAQs. This project also includes a 2023 Top 100 and an All-Time Top 100 list.

This is an FAQ post for the AO3 Ship Stats 2023 project.

I’ve found a mistake!

I try my hardest to ensure the data on the chart is 100% accurate, but I’m not a perfect fact-checking machine. Please check the post in question for edits and read the rest of these FAQs, but if you can’t find a correction or an explanation, please drop me a message.

Are these stats official?

A few people have gotten confused about this recently, but this work is NOT official. Nothing about the AO3 Ship Stats series has any formal affiliation with the Organisation for Transformative Works; I am just a fan with an interest for statistics making use of publicly available data.

What exactly is this measuring?

This measures the number of publicly-accessible works posted in Relationship tag displayed on Archive Of Our Own. The data was retrieved on August 7th 2023, and the comparison data for the This Year list was retrieved as part of last year’s list.

Because of the way AO3 tags work, all sub-tags and synonymous tags are also counted automatically (i.e. fics tagged “Johnlock”, “John/Sherlock” and “Sherlock Holmes/John Watson” are all combined into a single entry). The data gathering technique I use cannot access locked fics, so fandoms with a high proportion of locked fics (e.g. RPF) may have lower fic counts than expected.

What do all of the columns on the chart mean?

Rank - The ranking of this relationship out of all of the relationships on AO3, listed by number of works tagged with that relationship in the period specified (the last year or all time). 1 is the most frequently tagged relationship, 10 is the tenth most, etc.

Change - The change in rank since the last top 100 list. Positive numbers mean the relationship has moved up the list, negative mean it has moved down. "New" indicates that this is a new entry which was not in last year’s top 100.

Relationship - The relationship tag being considered. Because AO3 has a tag hierarchy, this includes all tags which the site considers synonymous to or sub-sets of the main tag.

Fandom - The fandom most frequently tagged in association with the relationship tag.

Works/Total - The number of fanworks (typically fanfics) tagged with that relationship, as of 7th August 2023.

New Works - The difference in the numbers of fandoms between 4th August 2022 and 7th August 2023, which is equal to the number of new works created in that time period minus the number of existing works deleted or locked in the same period.

Type - The genders of the characters/people involved in the relationship. M indicates male, F female. Other is used for relationships involving non-binary characters or characters of ambiguous gender. Gen indicates that the tag is for a platonic or familial relationship, not a romantic one (indicated on AO3 by an & symbol).

Race - The races of the characters/people involved in the relationship. In most cases, the first box indicates the first character listed and the second indicates the second character; a small number of relationship tags with more than 2 characters are included, in which case multiple characters/people of the same race may be represented by a single box.

How is race determined?

In order to ensure that the "race" category is determined consistently, I will attempt to follow a hierarchy of evidence for each character's race. Lower categories of evidence will only be considered relevant if no clear evidence is available in any of the categories above.

Explicit statement of the character's race within canon (e.g. the character says “I'm Black.”)
The race of an actor physically embodying the character in a live-action medium like film or TV. (For theatre or musicals, both the original cast and the cast of any recorded version are considered equally canonical.)
Indirect evidence of race, such as the character's physical appearance, name, culture and voice acting cast. In the case of fantasy media, this includes fictional races which are shown to be analogous to real-world races.
Evidence from other adaptations of the work, considered in the same order as above.
Explicit Word of God (e.g. tweets or blog posts from the author) about the character's intended race.

The most popular fandom tag associated with each pairing will be considered the main source of canon for that pairing. If the most popular fandom tag is an “All Media Types” tag, or otherwise encompasses multiple works, then all official works inside that umbrella are equally canon. If multiple works conflict on a character's race - for instance, they are different races in different adaptations - the character will be listed as "Ambiguous".

"Ambiguous" also includes characters whose race is explicitly intended to be ambiguous, video game characters whose race can be chosen or changed by the player, and reader-insert or "You" characters. Please note that real people cannot be racially ambiguous. Characters with non-human skin tones such as blue or yellow are listed separately.

Please note that white characters who are ethnically Jewish are listed as white; this is due to the limitations of race as a categorisation system and the need to limit the number of categories listed. I am also following the usual American convention of not listing white heritage in the case of characters/people who are mixed race or fall into multiple racial categories, e.g. Barack Obama would be listed simply as "Black" not as both Black and white.

Why is [character] described as [race]?

The following is a selection of characters whose racial categorisation in these stats is often questioned or debated. Please only comment about these characters if you feel you have sufficient evidence (see above) to argue for a change in race.

Why do some pairings have fewer works than expected?

It is not possible to directly access the "This Year's List" data from an AO3 search, as it requires having a snapshot of last year's data to compare to. When creating the "This Year" and "Year In Review" lists, I subtract the number of unlocked works which existed at the start of the time period from the number which existed at the end. This gives a result equal to the number of new works added in that time, minus any older works which have been deleted or locked. As a result, if a large number of older works are deleted or locked, the pairing may appear much lower on the list than expected, not appear at all, or even be listed with a negative number of "new works".

In December 2022, there was a concern about machine learning algorithms scraping data from AO3 fics (post). As a result, a large number of people in multiple fandoms deleted or privated their old works. Different fandoms had different levels of impact, although generally the more total works a fandom has, the more it was affected. As a result of this, many pairings which typically make the list did not, and there was a bias towards newer and smaller pairings.

I do not intend to "correct" for this issue, as it reflects the number of publicly available works, which is what the stats have always measured. However if you are interested in learning the number of new works added without taking deleted or privated works into account, you can find this value by navigating to the pairings' works page, opening the "Filters" box, and entering the text created_at:["2022-08-04" TO "2023-08-07"] into the "Search within results" box (link to example).

Update 9th August 2023:

By manually comparing my data with the fic counts which appear on AO3 for some large pairings, here is an approximate shortlist of some of the most-affected tags:

For example: The above AO3 search shows a gain of 6345 works in the "Castiel/Dean Winchester" tag. However, 6800 works were deleted or privated in the same time frame. This gives the tag a "net gain" of -455 works, so it does not appear on this year's list.

What about background pairings?

Because of the way AO3′s tagging system works, there is no way to differentiate between the main pairing in a work and minor, or background, pairings. Some of the pairings on these lists may be popular primarily as a secondary pairing in works about another couple.

I have not done any research into background pairings with this data set. However, in the 2013 version of this project, I found that the background pairing effect was most common with F/M, and to a lesser extent F/F, ships.

How was this data gathered?

The raw data was collected from AO3 using a web-scraping program of my own design. All of the data collected on pairing names, fandoms and fic numbers is publicly available to any user of the site. Some processing has been done in order to remove duplicates, synonyms, non-specific/parent tags and tags involving original characters.

Data on gender and race was copied from previous lists or added by hand, and may contain errors.

What point are you trying to make?

All of the information in the main post is intended to be factual and verifiable. However, the data is presented in order to highlight the lack of fanfiction focussed on women, F/F pairings, and People of Colour. I always love reading these stats because it's like a smack in the face to how not plugged in I am.       Yeah, the Marauder fandom has always been a thing, but it has become its own community over the last few years at this point. It’s mainly on TikTok Tok that it found its footing. The fandom is held together by headcanons since not much is known about the years of before Harry Potter and the first war with Voldemort :)

    i'm not sure when you do the data but i expect that next time you do this there will have been a huuuge surge in ineffable husbands and in blackbeard/stede bonnet fics! and probably a decrease in stranger things fics since that show keeps getting delayed by the strike. im also going to place my bet on Alex & Henry from Red, White, and Royal Blue appearing in the rankings next time.
    i have to say im always surprised at how hugely popular the minecraft fics are. i'm deeply out of the loop on whatever goes on there but theyve been huge since at least 2020, looking at your old data

    I agree! This might sound wild, but I'm taking a class on Fanfiction at college rn and for my midterm paper I actually cited the 2023, 2022, and 2013 stats you created! My paper was about the lack of femslash on ao3, with a focus on Arcane which is an outlier, having Vi/Caitlyn as one of if not the most popular ship in the fandom.

I’ve got a question- Dreamling (Dream of the Endless/ Hob Gadling) is listed as a mixed race couple. I’m a little confused by that? Aren’t both characters white? Is there information I’m missing?

  Yeah that stood out to me too. That would be due to the actor who plays Hob (Ferdinand Kingsley) being of partial Indian descent, but I think it's very misleading to refer to them as a White/Asian pair since Ferdinand would be considered white by most people. I think at best this should get a White/Ambiguous label. 🤷 And I say at best since although the actor who plays him is mixed race I don't think Hob Gadling is meant to be, I think he's just meant to be white. It's moreso Dream that's ambiguous when it comes to race, so due to him a White/Ambiguous label might still fit. 😅

    In Sandman comics canon, Dream is FAR more racially ambiguous than Hob. He has appeared in stories as Black, Asian, Middle-eastern, and also...a cat. He's an anthropomorphic personification whose appearance changes depending on who he is communicating with. (We get a glimpse of him in the Black form that Nada knew in the series we have so far, and I think in S2 that story will be developed more) Even though he's played by a white actor in the show most of the time, I feel like HE is the more racially ambiguous character of the two, and he really belongs in the Not Human category.

      The N.H. category is for non-human skin tones, i.e. skin which is green, blue, grey, etc.
      If Dream is portrayed on-screen by multiple actors of different races for more than a few seconds, I would change his listing to "Ambiguous", but merely being a fantasy creature is not sufficient reason for this list (or it would apply to a whole bunch of characters!).

    Real people cannot be racially ambiguous in this classification. Honestly I'm deeply uncomfortable with the idea that anyone should be allowed to just decide that a mixed-race actor is... not Asian enough to "count", I guess? I admit my categories are not perfect, especially when it comes to handling mixed-race people, but I'd rather err on the side of acknowledging diversity here.

      According to his Wikipedia page, Ferdinand Kingsley is of "predominantly English descent; his paternal grandfather was of Khoja Gujarati descent." I understand your desire to capture diversity, but classifying someone who's 75% white as Asian seems a bit disingenuous and, in its own way, potentially problematic. Perhaps next time you could include a mixed-race category? Just a thought. I really appreciate you putting the stats out there.

  I love that most if not all the Maruaders ships are up there, the only thing is I know James is canonically white, but in so many fics ppl headcanon him as poc (usually indian) so I'm surprised but also not surprised they have him categorized as white

Hi! Thanks for all the work you do - I love reading these every year! I did notice one possible mistake -- the K-pop ships on lines 20 and 95 have all their fics listed in the last year, but those are from 7+ year old groups so most of the fics would be older. I wonder if there was some coding error that accidentally coded all the fics for those pairings as 2023 or something.
