Summary:

Ecologists by day, fic writers by night, fuck buddies for one month only (unless...)

Ed and Stede have been colleagues and best friends for years, working as ecologists to protect the environment. But lately it's all been more box-ticking, less actual saving the world, nothing like the dashing deeds of the eco-pirate heroes of their favourite television show, Tree Change.

If only they could be more like Tāne and Rupert. Their favourite characters are also lovers, and Ed and Stede have done their fair share of writing fic about them as an escape from their harder reality. Now Kinktober is coming up, and their first writing collaboration, and Stede, only out since last year, is worried about his lack of experience.

Ed’s only worried about how he can make Stede see the real feelings they so clearly have for each other, so it makes tactical sense to volunteer himself as a friends-with-benefits guide. They’ve just been handed a month on a remote property, where they’ll gradually begin to unveil a cover-up worthy of the villains on the show they love. And while they work to crack that puzzle, they'll also work their way through every possible kink, and find their way to much more than friendship...

Hello and welcome to a story that promises to rival Synchronicity for spicy mayhem!

This is a Kinktober story inspired by the recently dropped prompt list for October, but per the rules this first chapter does not include any of the prompts and just sets up the premise, using AUgust's Day 5 instead: Specific TV Show. In this case a fictional TV show called Tree Change, of which Ed and Stede are fans.

This fic will have the first chapter posted today, and the next will land on October 3, so prepare for a bit of a wait (but get hyped, because it's going to be a lot). My plan is to combine every three days' prompts into each chapter, so posting every third day instead of every day in October. Like Synchronicity, this one's going to feature a solid background plot and a lot of deep emotions even as we roll through the kinks.

The Kinktober list includes some very niche sex acts, and I'm planning to use at least one prompt from every day. I've included all the ones I currently plan to use in the tag list- there are several I won't be using, like sounding and snowballing, for example. I may add additional tags depending on what pops up, and I'll also be clear in the notes of each chapter what's covered in each. If there's anything that's difficult for you to read personally, please feel free to reach out and query whether it will be included- I'm always happy to help people decide their comfort level.

Chapter 2: New Horizons

Summary:

Ecologists Ed and Stede make their way out to a remote property to begin a month-long environmental assessment, but there's so much more to this month than that.

They're about to start working their way through learning the entire Kinktober list together, and the show they both love, Tree Change, is coming back this week. There are a whole lot of reasons to be nervous, but they're in it together, no matter what happens.

Summary:

Ed and Stede watch the first three episodes of the new season of Tree Change, and try to process the darker tone of what they've seen.

They continue their own friends-with-benefits arrangement while they're at it.

This chapter includes conversation about suicidal ideation both on their show and for Ed and Stede (in the past) in this story. This Ed and Stede have both accessed support and are in a good place. Summary:

Summary:

As the environmental mystery around them grows, Stede and Ed watch the 4th and 5th episodes of Tree Change, and it prompts some serious thinking for both of them.

Per the general tone of this fic, the 'slut' reference is joked about between them, and the choking is nothing more than a trusting throat-touch- nothing extreme happening for these two.

Near-drowning

There's a canon-aligned near-drowning situation with a significant amount of (temporary) danger and distress to several characters (everybody makes it through and they work through their trauma in probably ill-advised but helpful-to-them ways).

Implied homophobia

We also have some implied homophobia from Stede's horrible father as Stede recalls their last meeting, and then meets him again. There's some gleeful revenge for all of that.

An enormous thank you to everyone who's read or listened to this story, and especially to the collaborative podfic team that has pulled it all together over the last few months. Guided by LoopyDangerFrog, Kninjaknitter, just_a_perfect_day, Tipsy_Kitty, SierraJaneSims and SD_Ryan, this enormous project concludes with:

17 hours, 52 minutes and 25 seconds of recorded work,
Up to 121 hours of recording effort to create that,
Across 33 sections of story,
By 24 people across the world,
6 of whom recorded multiple sections!

As an author it's absolutely mind-blowingly amazing to have your work recorded on audio, but nothing quite prepared me for how incredible it would be to see such a fantastic team all working together to create this gorgeous patchwork of spoken words from the original.

This story was a huge labour of love for me, and I poured every ounce of my adoration and appreciation for our show and our fandom into it. Throughout the story Ed and Stede are surrounded by their fandom friends as they process the final season of the show they love, and fight for what they believe in. When I finished this, I didn't even dream that we'd just watched the last season of ours (for now), which really bumps up the emotion of it all. Post-cancellation that makes it feel like an extra level of meta love letter, especially combined with the lovely art and fics of fics that are also attached to the written version of the story.

From all of us, to all of us, I'm so glad we found each other. My endless gratitude to everyone who worked on this project, and everyone who listens to it. We've made so many special things already and we're so, so far from done ❤️
