Summary
Another day, another ship’s crew ensorcelled by Ed’s singing, throwing themselves into the sea and leaving their vessel to be dashed upon the rocks. You’d think at some point humans would learn how dangerous the sea was in Ed’s territory and start avoiding it, but luckily for him they didn’t seem to be a terribly clever species.
That, and to be fair to them, there weren’t a whole lot of survivors swimming out to tell anyone what had happened to all those missing ships.
Any minute now they’d start diving over the side. Ed added a little trill at the end of the verse, just for fun.
Any minute now the ship would start faltering, pushed off course by winds without a hand to steer the wheel or tack the sails.
Any minute now.

So is geologist Stede Bonnet – the first scientist accepted into NASA’s Apollo training program. When veteran astronaut Ed Teach gets bumped off of the crew for Apollo 17, can Stede possibly fill his shoes?

[Ed] liked the solitude, the change in pace from living on top of his crew, but too much of it made him feel batty.
You started to hear things, see things, that weren’t there. Wishful thinking or whatever, especially after extended times at sea. Now, the sounds Ed heard could be written off as that fuckhead seagull Buttons learning to imitate the sounds of human speech, but the sightings were less explainable. Flashes of warm orange-gold flickered at the edge of his vision, a bright spot of color in the dreary winter water.
Seals, Ed told himself. Walruses.
Ed thinks it's just a trick of the light. It's not.
