Nothing but a stranger

Summary:

(After being pardoned, Lyanna visits Robert and the two of them talk. He's heartbroken, but vows to be a better man for his soon to be wife Janna Tyrell, and he gives Lyanna a scolding.)

Work Text:

"My lord," Lyanna said with a sniff, acting as haughty as ever. "I'm glad to see you alive and well. I hope you're doing alright?"

Robert let out a loud laugh, with no mirth in it - no amusement in his deep stormy blue eyes either. "Really, Lya? Are you REALLY happy to see me alive?"

Lyanna bristled at this, narrowing her eyes as she hissed, "Only Rhaegar may call me that! Not even my brothers do anymore. And yes, I am happy to see you alive although I wish you would just accept your blame in this! I love Rhaegar, not you!"

The room was still filled with the booming laugh of Robert, bouncing off the walls and echoing into the halls of the Red Keep. "My blame? Oh, my lady, please do tell me. Of course you and Rhaegar must always be the blameless and selfless victims."

Lyanna's face turned red at this, as she shrilly screeched a reply at Robert, "You wouldn't remain loyal to me! You already had a bastard daughter, you would have never loved me!"

Robert ceased to laugh after hearing this, remaining quiet for a few moments. He quietly responded, "You're right. In that I don't love you, I loved the idea of you. Not... this. Never this-"

Lyanna interrupted him, a false smile on her face. "I'm glad that we seem to agree! Now, you can see why I fell for Rhaegar."

Robert inhaled sharply, before harshly continuing, "Let me speak, woman! You owe me that at the very least. I would have remained loyal. After the Battle of the Bells, I touched no other woman. Out of love for you, and due to the shame I felt. And yet - you ran away with a married man! With two children, and a beautiful wife. You have your OWN bastard with him? Do you not see how hypocritical you are, my lady? Why is it so different for me, why does it make me out to be worse than Maegor, yet it's alright for YOU to do so?"

Lyanna scowled, clearly due to the fact that none of this was in her favour. Robert didn't know how he thought he could ever love her - it was like, to him, a bucket of ice water dropped over his head. He had finally seen her for who she truly was, and always had been. Even Ned had been distraught over such, and was only civil and stony towards the woman. He had softened at the babe, but remained closer to the Martell queen and her children - clearly making friends with them, Robert himself had became close to them.

To everyone's surprise, Elia Martell had another daughter - nobody was more surprised than Rhaegar. Daenerys, the girl was called, a sweet and happy little babe who charmed everyone she met. She was born during one of the worst storms recorded - which gave her the moniker "Stormborn". It was said Lyanna had screeched and raged at this, cursing Rhaegar out for 'cheating' on her. Robert could only laugh at the irony of such, and he wondered if Elia and her brothers did the same.

Lyanna snapped at him like a cornered wolf, "It's different because... because... we love eachother, okay?! No other woman may do as I do, nor is any other man like Rhaegar! This is a once in a lifetime thing..."

Robert resisted the urge to burst out laughing, instead only retorting, "Oh, my lady, you've exchanged one cage for another. Albeit a golden one, but nevertheless, your perception of this being freedom is laughable. I've already heard Rhaegar has strayed from you, instead trying to cozy up with Elia again. You'll never be queen. Your son will never be king - we would sooner crown the babe Daenerys over any other spawn you whelp. The realm sees you as nothing but a royal broodmare, already people are betting on who the new Unworthy king takes as his mistress. In my opinion, I think Cersei is at the top of that list."

He continued on before she could interrupt him, "Within time, you'll see that I'm right. Whether that's now, or on your deathbed. Or, of course, until your very last breath you'll blame everyone but yourself and your silver lizard. Hard to know, but, either way I'm right. I should have married Elia myself, rather than ever inquiring after your hand in marriage. Good day, my lady."

With that, Robert gave a sarcastic bow, turned, and left the room. Lyanna was left by herself, her face still red with tears of frustration bubbling up in her eyes. Even after that, she still blamed Robert, Elia, and her brothers.
