“Catch this one Reidy!” Hoppo encourages the younger lifeguard as he starts to paddle. They had been out there for close to an hour and Reidy kept bailing on every wave. This was Hoppo’s attempt to get him over his fear of big surf and it certainly wasn’t going well. Hoppo caught the wave and was pushed up onto the beach. Reidy had bailed again and sat idly on his board, not wanting to meet Hoppo’s eyes on the beach. Hoppo stalks off back to the tower, officially giving up but Reidy was determined.
A few minutes later Whippet came jogging down to the waters edge. The surf rushed around his bare feet as he waved at Reidy. Reidy waved back, missing yet another wave.
“Hey! Reidy!” Whippet cups his hands around his mouth as he calls to his friend.
“What?” Reidy calls back, mimicking Whippet’s hands.
“Catch a big wave and I’ll give you a big fat kiss!” Whippet laughs, finding himself to be hilarious. Reidy flushes, but his face hardens with determination as another wave rushes by.
“Alright bet mate!” He cranes his neck to look behind him and quickly sees the perfect wave blossoming up behind him. He starts paddling, with more conviction than he had ever had before. Reidy bites his lip in determination as he finally manages to catch a wave.
“Yeah Reidy!!” Whippet whoops, jumping around in the waves. Reidy hops off his board in the shallows and tugs it to shore, his heart pumping loudly in his chest. “Beautiful job mate!” Whippet claps him on the back, spraying the layer of salt water on Reidy’s skin everywhere.
“So where’s my kiss Whip?” Reidy grins, pressing up close to Whippet who’s suddenly gone silent. “Well?”
