Damn, Dazai!

Summary:

Yosano, Ranpo and Kunikida are searching for a pack omega.

Dazai, the only member of the ADA yet to be invited to the pack, is deeply offended.

Maybe it would help if he actually told them he was an omega, right? Nah... they're detectives!

( Aka times the ada are stupid and times they realise things )

Chapter 1: The kitten incident

Chapter Text

It began, as it usually does, with a day at work. Dazai had barely sat at his appointed desk ( which he has recently moved slightly in favour of getting Akutagawa next to him ) and had PLANNED to spend his entire day slacking.

One thing the man noted, was that Kunikida was unusually quiet. Dazai paused, cocking his eye to the left - Kunikida was unusually absent.

"Ranpo-San?" Dazai spoke, standing slightly as to see the elder male from over his computer.

Ranpo paused, hesitantly removing a lollipop from his lips before speaking, "Before you ask, the others are on missions and Kunikida is currently out with Yosano."

Dazai raised an eyebrow, "A date? On work time?"

Ranpo rolled his eyes, "No, theyre out meeting an omega to see if she's worth inviting to the pack."

Dazai had to refrain from frowning at that. It was no secret to him that the rest of his coworkers had formed a pack some time ago, he'd have to be stupid to not realise after Akutagawa's initiation, but this was the first time he had heard any mention of them actively seeking a new member, let alone an omega.

It almost made Dazai want to stand up and scream, 'Hey, you idiots! IM an omega you havent invited to the pack yet and i literally WORK with you guys!' though he didnt as he knew it was unreasonable of him to expect others to miraculously guess his secondary gender after years of hiding it.

"Oh~" Dazai wiggled his eyebrows, "Do the pups need a mommy?"

"Well i don't see you fulfilling that nurturing role in their lives anytime soon Dazai." A voice from the doorway which Dazai recognised to be Kunikida piped up.

Ranpo's attention shifted off of Dazai quickly enough to cause an internal pout, "No luck then?"

Yosano sighed, walking towards Atsushi's desk and leaning against it, "Let's just say she's more suited for Dazai than for our pack."

Dazai shifted, perking slightly, "Really, what was she like?"

Kunikida huffed, red slowly starting to tint his cheeks, "She was more interested in...the act of coitus than in anything else."

"Oh." Dazai paused, running over the best response to whats just been thrown at him, "Is she the type to commit a double suicide?"

It was Yosano's turn to huff, "If you pound her hard enough then maybe. I have her number still if you'd like it."

Dazai grimaced slightly, "An omega? I'll pass," Dazai turnt to Akutagawa, who was sat quietly next to him during the conversation and was now blushing slightly, before pinching his cheeks, "Id rather spend some quality time with this little pup here!"

"Dazai-san." Akutagawa spoke, slightly muffled, "Need I remind you that I am eighteen years old, and therefore not a pup?"

Dazai pouted, "Don't tell me you arent a pup anymore. I will cry."

Akutagawa's eyes widened, "Apologies Dazai-san! Please do not cry!"

Dazai lunged towards Akutagawa, playfully wrapping his arms around the younger, "Yosano-sensei! Ranpo-san! Kunikida-kun! Dont you agree that little Ryuu is far from adulthood! Look at him!"

Kunikida stepped forward, grabbing Dazai by the collar and throwing him back into his chair, "Dammit Dazai leave the poor kid alone!"

Dazai huffed, "You're just jealous that im his favourite."

Yosano chuckled, "Keep this up Dazai and you'll have us thinking you actually have nurturing instinct like the rest of us."

"Please, Dazai? Nurture?" Kunikida rolled his eyes, "If we want Dazai to display that we may aswell hurry up and find the book because we won't get it naturally."

"Hey!" Akutagawa piped up, "Dazai -san can be nurturing when he wants to!"

"Sure he can kid, sure he can," Ranpo muttered, stuffing his face with popcorn, "Guess this means we need to keep looking then?"

Kunikida grimaced, "Definately"

"Dazai!" Kunikida scolded the brunette walking beside him as he faltered upon passing an alleyway, "I cant believe you're doing this again."

Dazai whined, "Kunikida-kunnn i REALLY can't leave it here! Look! It has no collar and it's just a baby!"

Kunikida huffed, "This is the fifth time in two days you've tried to pick up some random animal off the street! What is wrong with you!"

Dazai shuffled uncomfortably, fingers reaching to scratch behind the kittens ears, "They were all lost pets Kunikida, this one really is all alone, and it's hurt. I can't just leave it here.."

"You left that bloody poodle last week!"

"That's because its owner was nearby! And dogs are evil, they dont know pain like cats do..." Dazai paused, staring at the ginger ball of fluff before gently scooping it into his arms, "I'm keeping it."

"Dazai-" Kunikida took a deep breath, "Dazai you aren't keeping the kitten."

"Try me."

Kunikida took a step forward, causing Dazai to hiss and take a step back, "Dazai."

Kunikida could swear he saw Dazai's eyes widen and glaze over for a split second, before they narrowed into his skull.

"Are you fucking stupid?"

Kunikida frowned, faltering slightly, "What?"

"Kittens can smell scent too you know. You've got no patches on and you practically reek of annoyed alpha! You'll scare the baby if you come near it like that you dumb mutt!"

Kunikida took another deep breath, "Okay, fine. We'll take it to the vets but i will be escorting you back to the agency after WITHOUT it."

"If you do that im quitting."

"Are yo-"

"I'll do it!"

"..."

"..."

"You're explaining this to the others."

Dazai basically started glowing at that statement, nuzzling the kitten closer to his chest, "Fine by me!!"

A couple of hours had passed, and the vet visit went by smoothly enough for Kunikida to permit Dazai to keep holding onto the kitten. The kitten - Dazai had dubbed Chonk - was fairly healthy for something just wondering the streets, and a female, the knowledge she was safe was enough to have Dazai fighting a purr in his throat, continuously glancing at his partner to ensure he wasnt hearing anything.

Kunikida sighed, pausing outside the agency door, "Why dont we drop the kitten of to the local shelter?"

Dazai frowned, cradled the kitten in his arms even closer, causing Kunikida to huff and enter the office.

Dazai took a deep breath, gaze shifting between Ranpo and Kunikida with a playful yet determined glint as he followed. The kitten, seemingly attuned to its new guardian, nestled comfortably against Dazai's chest.

Ranpo raised an eyebrow, noting the subtle shift in Dazai's demeanor. "Planning to add 'cat whisperer' to your list of talents, Dazai?"

Dazai's smirk deepened. "Well, Ranpo-san, some talents are meant to be discovered, not announced."

Kunikida, persistent as ever, sighed. "Dazai, we can't have animals running around the agency like it's a petting zoo. It's a place of work, not a sanctuary."

Dazai's eyes gleamed, a mischievous glimmer escaping. "Who said anything about 'running around'? This little one is going to be my office assistant."

Ranpo chuckled. "I can already see the headlines: 'Armed Detective Agency Hires Kitten as New Detective.'"

Dazai, seemingly unfazed, shifted his attention back to the kitten. "Well, my dear detective, what do you think? Ready to solve some mysteries with me?"

As if on cue, the kitten gave a soft meow, eliciting laughter from Ranpo and a resigned shake of the head from Kunikida.

Kunikida, however, couldn't resist a final warning. "Dazai, if you're going to keep the kitten, make sure it doesn't disrupt the agency's operations. And I mean it."

Dazai's expression softened, and for a moment, the playful facade melted away. "I promise, Kunikida-kun, this little one won't be a disturbance. Chonk is a good girl"

Ranpo, paused, sly grin forming on his face, "You named the poor thing Chonk?"

At that moment, the door swung open, and Akutagawa entered, his sharp gaze immediately locking onto Dazai and the kitten. Dazai's eyes, too, met Akutagawa's, a silent understanding passing between them.

The kitten, sensing a new presence, let out a curious mew. Akutagawa, known for his stoic demeanor, surprised everyone by crouching down to the kitten's level, a rare softness in his expression.

Dazai's heart skipped a beat. He observed the interaction, his gaze flickering between Akutagawa and the kitten.

Akutagawa, much to everyone's surprise, gently stroked the kitten's fur, earning a satisfied purr in response. The tension in the room dissipated, replaced by the realisation that they definitely couldnt get rid of the kitten now.

Ranpo, unable to resist a comment, grinned. "Well, it seems even Akutagawa has a soft spot for your impromptu additions, Dazai. Maybe we should invite her to the pack."

Dazai suddenly hissed, causing Ranpo to pout, "Fine, fine you keep her to yourself then."

Chapter 2: The Paperwork Incident

Chapter Text

"Dazai," Fukuzawa stood over Dazai's desk, a worried frown on his face, "You do realise you have three months worth of paperwork due in the next week right."

The statement caused Kunikida to freeze, slowly turning his body to face his partner.

"I know," Dazai pouted, "It'll be done don't worry!"

"Right." The older man still stood, gaze fixed on the brunette, as if attempting to read him, "If you struggle completing paperwork I'm sure we could find ways to make the workload easier Dazai.."

Dazai rolled his eyes, pulling a pen out of his desk and grabbing one of the documents, "I get through paperwork quickly. I could probably finish it in two days with no distractions. You worry too much Pres~"

Fukuzawa sighed, "Alright. Let me know when you're finished."

As Fukuzawa left Dazai's desk, Kunikida's stern expression bore into his partner. "Dazai, your procrastination is impacting the team. It's starting to become more than annoying."

Dazai, flipping through paperwork with nonchalance, shot Kunikida a lazy grin. "Kunikida-kun, always the worrier. I'll finish the paperwork. No need to scold me."

Yosano, overhearing the conversation, hesitantly joined in, "Kunikida's right, Dazai. Your commitment to the Ada has been questionable at best recently."

Dazai's vulnerability surfaced briefly. "Questionable? Are you forgetting how i got shot in the head for you guys? Questioning my commitment to the team over paperwork, jeez you guys are so touchy touchy..."

Yosano, unimpressed, raised an eyebrow, "Maybe i phrased it wrong, but committing to missions and committing to the agency are different things. Paperwork is just something we all have to get done as a team, when one person is behind we all are. You're putting us all in worse off positions by lazing about."

Kunikida nodded, "That's right. I dread to think how you apply yourself in a pack environment. You need to work on these skills more for their sake."

Dazai huffed, kicking his feet under the desk, "I don't need to work on anything for anyone, I don't have a pack yet."

"I wish i could say that's surprising. You can't expect pack benefits without effort. If you changed your behaviours I'd imagine you'd have been invited to ours by now."

Dazai felt a sting at Kunikida's words, he knew he wasn't mate material, or packmate material but to have it laid out like that made his omega shiver slightly, eyes darkening. "I don't know who you think i am Kunikida-kun, but im not going to change who i am to get invited to a pack. Let alone one like yours."

Dazai paused, collecting himself before slipping back into his 'happier' mindset, "Honestly this talk is soooo boring. Commitment, commitment. I can commit just fine. Watch this." He circled a date on the calendar. "If I commit to finishing all this paperwork by the end of the week, will you two back off?"

Yosano, after a moments silence, took a step towards Dazai, "Dazai, you don't have a pack? I was under the impression you were spending your cycles with someone?"

Dazai's mood soured, the internal conflict intensifying. Yosano's question struck a nerve. He retorted, "When did i ever claim to hint at sharing my cycles? Not everyone needs pack support. I prefer being alone during those."

Kunikida, now slightly concerned, leant in. "Dazai, even if you don't have a pack it's advised you spend cycles with someone else. Even i was spending my rut cycles with someone before i joined the ADA pack.."

Yosano leant on Kunikida's shoulder slightly, "Yeah, even if you prefer spending them alone, biologically it's just not the healthy choice. If you're a beta you could go into a touch-shutdown, or if you're an alpha you could trigger a feral-rut. God knows what would have happened to me if i hadn't started spending my ruts with the pack."

Dazai huffed, he knew these things! He knew that as an omega touch-starvation can lead to severe heat-sickness, but he wasn't stupid. He had his own way of working around things like that, and he didn't need unwanted people who weren't even aware of his classification butting into his personal life!

"Well, im glad you guys know what tickles your fancy, but i assure you that you don't know what tickles mine. If you dont mind me im going to go work from home, where people are less likely to interrupt me."

Kunikida stood abruptly, going to follow Dazai but stopping as the boy rushed out through the door. With a sigh, he turnt to Yosano, "So, about this new omega?"

Chapter 3: The Jealousy Incident

Chapter Text

Kunikida sighed, settling his face in his arms as he read through the latest case file the president had sent his way. Although Dazai had completed his paperwork as desired weeks ago, it seemed that everyone was hesitant to let it get to that state again, and as a result he and his partner were only just getting back into actual work.

Tomorrow, as according to the file in his hands, he and dazai would be interviewing a mother and her child who were both victims of an ability attack. Kunikida fought off the urge to swear as he realised that he'd essentially be caring for two children considering Dazai hadn't quite grown out of his childish womanizing behaviour. How exhausting.

Tomorrow came quicker than Kunikida would have hoped, he noted to himself as he walked in an awkward silence towards the agency, with Dazai at his side.
He typically wouldn't walk the brunette to an interview like this, but the blonde was already on edge and didnt want to risk throwing off todays schedule by encouraging the slacker.

"Kunikida," Hummed Dazai, who had been unusually quiet, despite looking happier than usual, "We're talking to that woman and her child today, right?"

The taller nodded, "Yes, and we need this to go as efficiently as possible so please be respectful, and hold back on any flirting."

Dazai furrowed his eyes for a split second, before returning to normal, "Okay.. i was just asking because i wanted to know if we had any soft things at the agency? Maybe a plush or a blanket?"

Kunikida paused at that, turning to give Dazai an odd look. "Did you get someone pregnant?"

Dazai scoffed, flapping his hand about, "Honestly Kunikida-kun, you flatter me sometimes. But, no. I mean do we have comfort items for the child? Talking about what happened is going to be distressing so softer textures should be helpful, especially for an omega pup."

Kunikida frowned, but began walking again, "I... hadn't thought of that. I dont think we have anything unscented ready, so we might have to just risk it."

"No need!" Dazai chimed, "I have some spare in my desk. I was just checking because using someone elses would mean i wouldn't need to replenish my stock."

Kunikida raised an eyebrow, pushing Dazai along slightly whenever the younger slowed down. "And why are you keeping random things like that in your desk?"

The question caused Dazai's eyes to darken slightly, looking at Kunikida as if the man had just said something incredulous.

"Okay, first of all blankets are comfortable so why WOULDN'T i keep them in my desk."

"You haven't used them once." Kunikida scoffed, whacking Dazai on the back of the head, causing the younger to whine.

"Secondly!" Dazai started, giving his partner a fixed look, "They're good to have around incase the pups drop and need something unscented to prevent overwhelming them. Or if they want specific scents instead of pack scents. You're one of the head alphas for your pack, you really should be keeping these stocked, Kunikida."

The blonde blanched slightly, partially in shock over being scolded by Osamu Dazai, of all people, but mostly because he himself hadn't thought of that.

"Ah. That's a good point, I'll ensure everyone has a healthy stock from now on then," Kunikida let a small smile of appreciation fall onto his face, he really appreciated how Dazai looked out for the pups in the ADA, especially considering his lack of obligation to as it isnt even his pack. "You know, Daza-"

"We're here," His partner interrupted, as if he could sense the genuineness coming and desperately wanted to avoid it, "If you introduce us I'll get the plushie."

"Alright," Kunikida nodded, "Just, please, no flirting."

Dazai winked, "No promises!"

.

To say Kunikida was shocked, was quite frankly an understatement. He had expected Dazai to bombard the woman, but instead he skipped along with a dolphin plushie and slowly pushed it into the hands of the omegan girl, smiling when she accepted it with a purr.

The blonde alpha turnt to the adult client - a black haired alpha called Kuromi - deciding to let his partner coax some answers out of the child.

"So, Kuromi-san, would you mind if i asked you a few questions about the attack?" She nodded quickly, and Kunikida let himself ease at the thought this wouldn't be a stressful interview but there was a slight issue.

At first, it wasn't noticeable, and Kunikida just assumed he was being dramatic, but now he was certain of it - Kuromi would not stop staring at Dazai.

Typically, he'd understand, he was used to weary glances at the man. Justifiably so, his partners appearance is odd; clad head to toe in bandages, yet constantly wearing coats that left both nothing and a lot to be desired. However, these weren't weary glances at all - they were flustered and ( if his nose wasn't decieving him ) at times lustful.

To make matters worse, Dazai wasn't even DOING anything remotely sensual anytime she looked over! This time, all the brunette was doing was braiding the girls hair, and still Kunikida smelt a waft of aroused alpha come his way.

As politely as possible, and ignoring the continuous flare of anger in his chest, Kunikida set down his notebook and pen. "Forgive me for asking Kuromi-san, but is there a problem?"

The girl blushed, running a hand through her hair, "Ah well.. I wasn't going to be this forward about it but, your co-worker, is he spoken for?"

Suddenly, Kunikida found himself very happy he had no pen in his hand to snap. "No, hes not." He choked out, "But, respectfully, I don't think this is the place to be asking about such things."

Kuromi bit her bottom lip, yet again throwing a highly inappropriate glance towards Dazai, "I know that! I'm never this informal i swear! It's just, being an alpha and seeing an omega bond with my pup drives my instincts crazy. Its insane."

Kunikida promptly chocked on his breath, causing his partner to quickly look over in genuine concern before deciding to focus more on the child. "I understand where you're coming from but," he let out a hefty sigh, cursing the gods for putting him in this situation, "Dazai isn't an omega, and he definately isn't the maternal type. So its best you look for a partner elsewhere."

"I see," The girl broke out into a grin, a glint in her eye, "You're interested in him too, right? In that case, i'll back off. But hey, you've got my respect for taking your time, honestly if he dresses how hes dressed today regularly id definately struggle refraining fro-"

"OKAY!" Kunikida stood abruptly, "Thankyou for the information Kuromi-san, it was very helpful, but I think that it's best that you and your daughter see yourself out."

It didn't take long for Dazai to finish up, and once that delusional client had left, Kunikida slumped back onto his regular seat, finally feeling himself breathe.

That was, until Dazai accidentally got his pencil stuck under the sofa and took it upon himself to dive under the sofa. And although only for a few seconds, the arch of his back almost perfectly resembled an omega in heat ready to subm-

Was he staring? He felt like he was staring.

Kunikida promptly rose out of his seat after checking the time, "I'm heading home." He ushered put quickly, before storming out of the door.

The journey back to his place ( and by his place he meant the house he, Ranpo and Yosano had bought the previous year ) was agonising. He had hoped that removing himself from the situation would make things better, but with every blink a different imagine flashed into his mind.

Dazai with back arched and his hole dripping with slick. Dazai mewling, face flushed as he delivers kitten licks to Kunikidas dick. Dazai, calling for an alpha whilst he ruts against a plushie.

Kunikida slammed open his door, shutting it and rushing to his bedroom at a speed he had never known himself to be capable of. His dick was so painfully hard in his pants he was convinced the slightest gust of wind would make him pop a knot.

He stripped off his shirt, briefly debating taking off his trousers, before deciding he was taking too long and shoving his hand in there to grab his throbbing member.

"FuCk-" He heaved, twisting on his bed so he was facefirst in a pillow full of his mates' scent, hoping it would wash away any mental images of Dazai and alleviate the ball of guilt heavy in his gut, "Oh my god-"

He felt himself hump his fist deaperately as the image of Dazai beneath him, equally as sweaty and practically begging for his cum came to mind.

"Osamu-" His voice cracked as he came into his hand, collapsing onto the bed and paling slightly when he realized he had actually managed to pop a knot to the thought of the brunette, something most alphas didn't tend to do when not in rut.

He was about to clean up his mess when he caught sight of both Ranpo and Yosano stood in the doorway, taunting glints in their eyes.

"Well." Ranpo was the first to speak, "Of all the things to come home to I really wasnt expecting that."
Yosano hummed in agreement before adding on mockingly, "Really Doppo, of all people to bust a knot over, you pick Dazai?"

Kunikida turnt bright red, promptly deciding that the best response would be to pick up a pillow and lob it at their faces. So he did.

Chapter 4: The Blanket Incident

Chapter Text

Typically, it is a habit for omegas to check over and reconstruct their nests before and after a heat, but Dazai didnt nest, because he didn't give in to omegan instincts. Actually, Dazai was so against nesting that he purposefully kept his dorm barren and uncomfortable, as to avoid the urge as much as physically possible.

Sure, you could argue that for an omega with zero heatmates it was unhealthy to further deny himself any comfort, but when he spent most of his heats drinking till he passed out, what was the point?
Infact, Dazai would argue that by avoiding stupid omega things like nesting, he'd actually eradicated the itch as a whole.

Yes, he'd definitely eradicated the itch, meaning that the fact that he'd spent the past thirty minutes rearranging everything on his desk, and the agency couch was unrelated to his vibrant need for calm.

It also meant, that if he opened his bottom drawer only to find empty rather than filled with the star plush and blanket that usually loitered there, he didnt care. Because Dazai Osamu did NOT nest, and therefore something as irrelevant as that should not matter.

Only, the blanket still smelt faintly of Odasaku despite it having been years since his passing, so it was normal to want something like that to constantly be within arms reach. And the star plush was a gift! Albeit a gift for Ango, who Dazai DEFINATELY did not still care about, but it was a gift nonetheless, so really he had the right to keep it safe.

Dazai glanced to Ranpo, who sat at his desk eating candy as usual, before abruptly storming over to his drawers to dig through them.

"Dazai what are you doing?" He asked rather bluntly, whining whenever Dazai looked close to squishing or tearing a sweet.

Sure, Ranpo was perceptive and knew how to figure things out quickly, but he had come to learn that when it came to Dazai he couldn't be bothered to put the effort in. It wasn't like he didn't care! It was just that when it came to the man, answering questions only led to having to ask more questions, and his ability was best spent on cases. That's what he told himself anyway, because there's no WAY he was going to admit that Dazai's secret keeping skills bested his detective skills.

Dazai froze, as if taking a moment to collect himself, "Ah Ranpo-sannnn!" He grinned a grin that did not reach his eyes, "You haven't taken anything of mine at all, have you?"

Ranpo hummed, chewing rather loudly as he pretended to think, "I don't know, have I?" The shorter teased, only to jump slightly as Dazai growled at him.

"Dazai!" Kunikida shouted, now standing from his desk and storming over, "What in gods name do you think you're doing growling at Ranpo like that?"

Dazai's opened and closed his fist, as if unsure what to do with his hands, quickly snapping back into a cheerier persona. "You're so serious! I was just trying to get something of mine back off of him! But Ranpo-san is being mean and won't tell me where he put it." He made sure to add a fake pout to his sentence, as if to convince his partner that his ears were just wrong.

"..Really? You couldn't have discussed this after your shift?" Kunikida pondered, feeling slightly agitated himself. "What is it Ranpo took anyway?"

Dazai was now picking at skin on his fingers, "Oh. It's nothing important. Just a blanket and a plush thing." He muttered, bouncing slightly from heel to toe.

"Wait THAT'S what you want?" It was Ranpo's turn to pipe up, genuine surprise in his voice, "I thought you were asking about that slice of cheesecake you kept in the fridge."

Dazai's gaze darkened, about to snap at Ranpo and tell him that the boy had to be stupid to think that's what he was upset over, only for Kunikida to speak first.

"A...blanket and a plush?" The blondes eyebrow was raised, "Like the ones you keep for the pups? Why are you getting aggressive over something like that?"

A whine left Dazai's throat before he could reel it in, causing him to flush in shame before awkwardly clearing it, "Ah, no it's-," He picked at more skin, "No, it's mine, not for the pups. Nothing important i promise i just like having them near me."

Kunikida reached up to feel his partners forehead, concern shadowing his face, "Are you feeling alright? You seem off."

Dazai felt his facade falter again as he fought off urges to whine and lean into the touch, "No, I'm fine." He iterated, "I just really want my things."

Ranpo wasn't convinced. He narrowed his eyes as if assesing the situation in his head, and proceeded to call Akutagawa over.

"Akutagawa," He began, a slight scold in his tone causing the younger to shift uncomfortably, "You haven't seen Dazai's blanket and plush, have you?"

The ravenette actually seemed glad he was being asked that, as if he had just remembered something, "Ah Dazai-san," He turnt to the brunette, quickly grabbing a bag containing the items and handing them over,

"Yosano Sensei was talking about wanting to clean the blankets you keep for the pups yesterday, so i purposely took your ones out." Akutagawa paused, bowing slightly before continuing, "I'm really sorry about touching your things, but I had seen you with them before, noticed they were scented and assumed you wouldn't like them washed."

Dazai let out a sigh of relief, leaning over to wrap Akutagawa in a tight hug before realising what he had done and pulling away. "Sorry Ryu," He smiled, "Thank you so much, im really glad to have you around again."

The pups face was bright red and buffering, causing the other adults to chuckle. Dazai noted that if it wasn't for his innate need for privacy, he'd definitely be purring right now. Looking down into the bag, he paused. He wasn't properly nesting yet, that's for sure, but if he was doing something similar then that had to be fine, right?

He tried to dismiss the idea, but anytime he looked at Akutagawa his inner omega started screeching, so with a sigh he shuffled to his desk patiently, and once the others had left he pulled out an unused bat plush he definitely kept around for the pups, and not for this exact moment.

His pup was still there, as always, so he thrust the thing into his arms, with instructions to scent it.

"Dazai-san?" Akutagawa asked, confused, still scenting it anyway "What's this for?"

Dazai felt like he was flushing pink head to toe, "Its for my," He dry swallowed, it was NOT for his nest. He did NOT nest. "It's for my nest."

"HUH?" Akutagawa screeched before bowing applogetically for the second time that day, "Im sorry Dazai-san! For not realising your classification and for being unable to return your feelings!"

Dazai paled, nervously running his hands through his hair, "Okay firstly. My.... gender is a secret, one you're now going to have to keep. Sorry not sorry. And, oh god, I don't like you like...that Ryu. It's ah, my omega? It kinda sees you as its..." The word pup went unspoken.

A trill left Akutagawa, who then joined Dazai in his blushing state, before clearing his throat, "Here." He said, returning the now cherry scented plush to Dazai, and rushing to leave, before hurriedly adding on, "My uhm, my beta likes the idea of you being my dam too. Okay. Going now. Bye."

The door closed, and it took Dazai a good hour to stop clutching that bat plush to his chest.

Chapter 5: The Mai Incident

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Dazai had made a decision. It wasnt an easy decision, or a decision he was particularly happy about, but it was a decision nonetheless. He was going to stop wearing scent patches.

That was the easiest option he had come up with in regards to telling the ADA he was actually an omega, and it gave him time to adjust to the idea of being known without, well, being known.

You would assume, that as secondary genders have been around since the dawn of time, that scent-blocking technology would be just as easy to remove than it is to apply. However, whilst that rings true if worn for a short period of time, after a long period of time, it causes their scent to malfunction.

Meaning, for the lack of better word, Dazai wouldn't smell like an omega for a good few weeks considering he had been on all scent suppressants for four years. Instead, he smelt softly like rotting fruit, which whilst was a pain, he knew the ADA wouldn't mind much as they had literally been around rotting bodies before.

Part of his plan, however, was not to be late to work on his first day without blockers, really! He had just ended up needing to wear more bandages than usual ( mostly due to his insctincts screaming at him for being so exposed ) and therefore had to do a last minute shopping trip.

So, he hurried into the building as fast as he could, before it hit him.

Something smelt off.

The second thought that came to mind, was that there was a random omega sat in his chair. The first thought was that she fucking stank

He pulled his sleeves over his bandages, and grimaced as a waft of floral hit his nose, which was as sensitive as always. He looked around the office, and everyone was working as usual, paying no mind to the random ass woman acting like she could replace Dazai.

'Ah,' He thought, distaste ringing heavy in his mind, 'This must be another candidate for pack omega.'

Taking a deep breath, Dazai strode over to his desk, flashing one of his renouned grins, sizing up the girl with his eyes. The appeal was there, he noted, though she did come off a little stereotypical for an omega - black hair, blue eyes, very feminine and a strong scent. She reminded him of Sasaki a bit, though hopefully not a psycho, not if she planned on being around his pups anyway.

"Excuse me?" He spoke, tucking his hands playfully behind his back, "I'm Dazai, i actually sit here, im guessing you're here as a guest of the pack so you may not know that, but can i have my seat please?"

The black haired girl turnt to face him, seemingly annoyed at the prevention of her conversation with Kunikida, "Hello," She spoke with the fakest smile plastered on her face, "I'm actually trying to have a conversation with my alpha right now? I'm Mai, your coworkers' omega. Can you please leave, im sure if you work here you have more important things to do."

Dazai raised an eyebrow at her response, grin widening slightly, "Oh I'm well aware of the importance of my duties here, hence why I came to work to work on a child abduction case, BUT," He replied smoothly tone laced with amusement, "you are currently sat at my desk, which i currently need in order to access files on-" He points to the computer she seems to be playing a game on, "-THAT computer."

He moved his hand to mockingly pat her head, "So, unless you're telling me that you having a conversation with an alpha that hasn't even claimed you yet is more important than eleven missing children, then i suggest you kindly hurry along and stop stinking up my desk."

Mai narrowed her eyes at Dazai, fake smile bristling at the conflict, "Excuse me?" She snapped, tone dripping with disdain, "Who do you think you are insulting an omega's scent whilst stinking like that?"

Dazai's grin widened into a smirk, "Oh, hunny. I smell like this because I've just come off of blockers after four years, you just reak."

Mai's expression darkened, her blue eyes flashing with fury at Dazai's words. "How dare you," she hissed, her voice low and dangerous. "You have no right to speak to me like that."

Dazai's smirk only grew wider, his amusement evident in his eyes. "Oh, but I do," he replied coolly, crossing his arms over his chest. "Especially when you're sitting in my chair and insulting me in the process."

Mai's hands clenched into fists at her sides, her nails digging into her palms as she fought to control her anger. "I don't care how many cases you've fucking solved" she spat, her voice dripping with venom. "You're nothing but a rude, disrespectful—"

Before Mai could finish her sentence, Kunikida, who had been watching intervened, clearly fed up. "That's enough, both of you," he said firmly, his voice cutting through the tension in the air. "We have work to do, and this petty squabbling is getting us nowhere."

Mai shot Dazai one last glare before reluctantly moving away from his desk, her shoulders tense with frustration. Dazai watched her go with a satisfied smirk, knowing that he had won this round.

He sat on his desk, nausea flooding his body at the scent, and inner omega whining at his inability to scent his things, before he took the initiative to start working.

"You know Dazai," Tanizaki spoke up meekly, "She wasn't entirely wrong about your scent, it is just a little bit distracting." Dazai looked over at Mai's smug face, clenching his hands into fists, ready to argue when Kunikida spoke up.

"Yes, i agree." The elder male was now turnt facing Dazai, "You could've given us some kind of warning you'd be stinking up the office."

"Are you being serious right now?" Dazai snarled, "All i ever hear from you people is that i'm too secretive, and that its unfair that i can read all your scents even though you cant read mine. Now that I'm taking initiative and opening up more, you're complaining because im gonna smell bad for what? A few weeks at top? We work around dead bodies, you've all smelt worse."

Tanizaki's expression faltered, realizing he had unintentionally upset Dazai. "I-I didn't mean it like that, Dazai," he stammered, his voice apologetic. "I just thought maybe a heads-up would've been nice, that's all."

Kunikida sighed, rubbing his temples in frustration. "Look, Dazai," he began, his tone softer now, "We appreciate your efforts to be more open with us. But you have to understand that scent plays a significant role in our work, and any sudden changes can be... disconcerting."

Dazai's shoulders tensed, a mixture of irritation and hurt swirling inside him. "I get it," he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. "I'll try to be more considerate next time."

Everyone turnt back to their work, and whilst Kunikida and Tanizaki felt any tension dissapate quickly, Dazai, did not. He just couldn't quell his dissapointment, part of him had hoped that being more open would lead to him actually being regarded as an ADA member, rather than a nuisance, but he was wrong.

He had slaved away case after case, and sacrificed himself time after time only to show uo empty-handed. Mai didnt even have to do anything to earn a promise to the pack, she just had to sit and look pretty.

'Oh.' Dazai thought, 'I see.'

Dazai did not look like an omega, or act like an omega at all really. In a world without secondary genders, he could be considered attractive, but in this world he was definitely not.

Mai had wide hips, a thigh gap, and sizeable breasts. Mai had alluring siren eyes, dainty hands and a delicate posture. Dazai did not. He slowly drifted his hand down to clasp his wrist. His thumb and pinky did not meet. He had gained weight since leaving the port mafia.

He glanced over to Mai, who was talking to Yosano and Naomi. They all looked so effortlessly pretty.

Dazai's mind was reeling - he had always prided himself on his intellect and skill, but now he wondered if instead of spending all that time learning, he should've spent it curating his figure as to prevent himself from being tossed aside as an adult.

Instead of fighting, should he have been applying makeup? Instead of strategising, should he have been perfecting hungry eyes in the mirror? Instead of carving into his body, should he have been starving it?

For the first time in his life, Dazai did not know.

Notes:

Yes Yes, I know I didn't tag /original female character but honestly, it didn't feel necessary?

Mai will appear again, but she won't have a significant romantic relationship with anyone cuz like....have u heard her? Also she's not named after an author as she has no ability!

Chapter Text

Dazai was hungry.

There was an aching within his chest that left his body screaming with every move. He was hungry, and wanted his fill, but he had been starving for so long he could not tell what he was hungry for anymore.

It had been three weeks since he met Mai, and since then the office had gone from being a place of comfort to being hell.

His own scent was just starting to show, a mix of savoury pastries, apple and whiskey, and whilst he wasn't releasing enough to identify him with, he was able to scent things.

He wasn't too generous with his scenting as he didn't want complaints about plaguing the office, so he stuck to sentimental things, like his coat, a couple crab pens Ryu had gotten for him, and a new blanket he had gotten for himself.

It wasn't a lot in comparison to what the other Agency members would scent, and it was often drowned out because of that, but the thought alone that he was scenting again made Dazai's omega preen.

Until, Mai decided she didn't like Dazai's natural scent. She would linger round his desk more than usual when he was working, as if to get a grasp on the smell, which for all he disliked her made sense, so he didnt push. But then, he would come into work and her smell would linger in his area, as if to say she hadn't left his desk when he had.

It made him feel physically ill, and it was making it harder for him to scent things because anything he did scent would be immediately overpowered by the smell of floral perfume.

So, Dazai made the decision to come into work as late as possible, and work overtime. He had obviously thought it to have been working, as Mai wasn't psycho enough to stay at the office until gone three in the morning, until today.

He glanced down at the hand gripping his pen, and found it shaking.

His new blanket had been scented by that bitch omega. As had his pens, his desk - even his CHAIR, smelt rancid. He couldn't escape the scent, and even worse she had decided to come in to visit Yosano, who was also working overtime.

Dazai's hands shook as he tried to focus on his work, his mind clouded with a mixture of frustration and despair. The sound of footsteps were approaching, quickly, and a sense of dread began to bubble in his gut.

"Dazai, are you still here?" Mai's voice cut through the silence like a knife, forcing himself to remain composed.

Dazai glanced up to see Mai standing in the doorway, her gaze piercing and unsettling. "Yes, I'm still here," he replied, his tone terse.

Mai stepped further into the room, her presence looming over him like a dark cloud. "I noticed you've been avoiding me lately," She spoke, voice sharp with accusation.

"I've been busy." he replied curtly, his eyes narrowing in defiance.

Mai's lips curled into a cold smile, sending a chill down Dazai's spine. "Busy scenting up that desk of yours?"

Dazai's heart raced as he felt the walls closing in around him. He knew he had to find a way to escape, but he couldn't bring himself to leave his work unfinished, not when Kunikida was already giving up on him. "I have work to do," he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper.

Mai's smile widened, her eyes glinting with malice. "Of course you do," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "That's why they keep you around afterall, isn't it? God knows what they're going to do when your secondary gender is out."

A pause. "What do you mean?"

Mai chuckled, "Well. I'm not letting another Alpha in the pack, if you're a beta you're useless anyway." She raised an eyebrow mockingly, looking him up and down, "And on the off chance you're an omega, well, I can't think of anyone who would keep and omega like you around."

"Is there a problem, Mai?" Yosano's eyebrows raised at the girl, approaching Ranpo's desk and leaning over it.

Dazai stood abruptly, sliding his coat on and stuffing as much paperwork into his bag as possible, "I have to go. I think I'm going to work from home. Call me if im needed for a mission."

"Dazai?" Yosano tried to call his name, but he was already out of the door.

"You know how he is babe," Mai purred, sliding over to where Yosano sat at Ranpo's desk, "You just need to leave people like that alone."

The alpha stood, ignoring Mai completely before approaching Dazai's desk, taking in the abundance of floral scent.

"What were you talking about then, babe?" She asked Mai, running her fingers over mahogany.

"I never knew you and Dazai were close?" Yosano quipped, lightly dragging her fingers across the mahogany of his desk.

Mai grimaced, "Just about the state of the office, I wouldn't worry about it, you know how he gets." She followed Yosano over to the desk, picking up a picture of him and Akutagawa, "How he constantly looks fresh out of a car crash I'll never know."

Yosano scowled, "Well that's really funny, because I just heard you tell one of our best detectives that he has essentially no place here, no matter his secondary gender "

A pout formed on Mai's face as she kicked herself up onto Dazai's desk, still fiddling with the photo. "Am i wrong, though? I don't see the point in bonding with someone who wont be around here for long anyway." She put the photo down and started sniffing his pens, "All that suicide talk is bound to get him kicked out at somepoint, especially if he's going to throw a strop whenever anybody scents his things."

Yosano plucked the pens out of Mai's hands, "Dazai's been through a lot, we aren't planning on kicking him out of the Agency ever, so if you're hoping that's going to happen you're hoping wrong." She paused, turning to fully face her potential mate, "And what do you mean scenting? Nobody scents Dazai's things, its pretty disrespectful to scent something belonging to someone who isn't able to properly scent yet. You haven't been scenting his things have you?"

"Well," Mai huffed, kicking her legs against the male's chair, "I have been scenting his things, only because he reeks of whiskey and I've been desperately trying to stop it from stinking up the office. He keeps scenting his stuff and the smell is so distracting!"

"Excuse me?" Yosano's eyes widened, she quickly dragged Mai away from Dazai's desk, "We've spent the past four years trying to get Dazai to start showing his scent, and now you're telling me not only has he actually been scenting things, but you've been actively discouraging it?"

Mai crossed her arms defiantly, her expression hardening as she met Yosano's gaze. "Look, I don't care what you think. I'm not going to sit around and let Dazai turn this place into his own personal stench factory," she retorted, her voice dripping with disdain.

Yosano's jaw clenched in frustration, her patience wearing thin. She couldn't believe Mai's callous attitude towards Dazai's struggles, couldn't understand how anyone could be so heartless.

"Fine," Yosano said through gritted teeth, her tone tinged with disappointment. "If that's how you feel, then maybe we're not as compatible as I thought."

Mai's eyes widened in surprise, a flicker of uncertainty crossing her features. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice faltering slightly.

Yosano sighed, her shoulders slumping in defeat. "I mean, if you can't find it in yourself to show a little empathy towards someone who's clearly struggling, then maybe we're not meant to be together," she said, her voice tinged with anger.

"You think your pack will be fine with you walking out on me?" Mai let out a dry laugh, "What about your fucking mates? Ranpo and Kunikida still want me, are you seriously going to leave them behind to help out some random asshole?"

Yosano frowned, "They'll come to their senses."

For a moment, there was silence as Mai processed Yosano's words, her expression shifting from annoyance to rage. But before she could respond, Yosano turned on her heel and marched out of the room, leaving Mai alone with her thoughts.

Notes:

Sorry for the ass chapter, I've been focused on the bsd x mha fic im writing. I promise I'll be back on track in a couple of weeks <3 comments R appreciated

Chapter 7: 14

Chapter Text

Hey guys! First of all, this fic is NOT cancelled, i guess?

I know I said i’d update this on the 17th, however i’m just not happy with the way i’ve written this fanfiction, it’s so different from my usual writing style and because of this it’s really hard to consistently update.

Because of this, I'm going to “rewrite” this fic, so to speak. That will come out between the 21-23rd, instead of this, and once it’s out it will be deleted. I just feel like the characters in this fic are very two dimensional, and it’s hard to root for the endgame pairing because of this.

If you have any requests for the “new” fanfic, let me know! It’ll feature all the same dynamics, so don’t worry about that, it’ll just be better executed. I’m so sorry for the inconvenience. Upon release, the new version will have the same/similar amount of chapters this fanfic does, and we will be around the same point in the story, with the addition of some much needed changes!!

I am also after beta readers for this rewrite and my other fanfiction, ‘Shame’, if people seem interested in the comments I will put out a google form!!
