The day Alex first meets Henry, he’s six years old. The teacher stands at the front of the classroom, a scared-looking blonde kid next to her, and she introduces him as Henry Fox, all the way from England! He sits in the empty seat next to Alex. Alex pretends not to hear the whispered apology from the teacher as she pats Henry’s back.
“Hi, I’m Alex,” he grins, sticking his hand out for Henry. “Do you wanna play together when we go outside for recess?”
Henry blinks slowly as he shakes Alex’s hand. His cheeks are dusted with a light pink. “Y-Yes,” he murmurs, “I’d like that a lot.”
Henry sticks by Alex’s side. They’re instant friends, much to his classmates’ surprise, and Alex couldn’t be happier. He doesn’t have many friends. Henry notices this, but never brings it up.
“Some kids say I’m annoying and I talk too much,” Alex explains to him over lunch one day, shrugging a bit. “My mom just says I’m really passionate.” He sounds the word out slowly just like his mom had taught him.
“I don’t think you’re annoying,” Henry smiles softly. “I like spending time with you.”
Alex turns seven just a few months after he meets Henry. He hand delivers Henry’s invitation to his birthday party. He gives the rest to his teacher and lets her know that the whole class is invited. He doesn’t stop talking about it the entire two weeks leading up to it.
Nobody shows up.
Alex sits at the table, surrounded by empty chairs, the table covered in decor and goody bags. June is trying to cheer him up. Alex is about to ask if they can just go home when Henry rushes through the door with his parents.
“Henry!” he grins, jumping up to hug him. “C’mon, take your shoes off- I wanna race you in the obstacle course!” He grabs Henry’s hand and drags him off to the other side of the room.
“Sorry we’re late, Henry had to make sure he looked perfect,” Arthur chuckles softly. “I think he might have a little crush on Alex.”
“No worries,” Oscar smiles softly. “We’re just glad y’all could make it. Alex was starting to get bored.”
“Did nobody else show up?” Catherine frowns. “That’s awful. Alex is a wonderful kid.”
“He doesn’t have many friends,” Oscar explains quietly. “He’s a lot to handle for some people, but never for Henry. Henry keeps up with Alex better than anybody I’ve seen, honestly.”
Alex begs his mom to let Henry come home with them for a sleepover. Nobody has the heart to say no, and Arthur swings by with a bag of clothes for Henry that evening.
From then on, they’re inseparable. Alex goes to Henry with help on his homework, and Henry helps Alex when his mind is in overdrive. They stay best friends when they move from elementary school to middle school. When they turn thirteen and Henry comes out to Alex, tears streaming down his cheeks, Alex just holds him close and whispers praises in his ear. Their families always joke that they’re going to get married.
“Nobody can come between you two,” Ellen would say, “ you’re two peas in a pod.”
The more Alex thinks about it, the more he can see it- standing at the end of an aisle with Henry, rings glinting on their fingers, spending the rest of forever with him.
Alex comes out as bisexual six months later. Henry hugs him, tells him he’s proud of him, and then cuddles under the blanket with him for their weekly movie night.
They talk about what their families say. Henry brings it up, an innocent question about whether or not Alex would even want to spend the rest of their lives together.
“Of course, sweetheart,” Alex had said. “ You’re my best friend. I can’t imagine my life with anybody else.”
By the time they start high school, they’re officially AlexAndHenry. Never one without the other. They aren’t dating, not formally, but they spend all of their free time together. Alex walks Henry home on days they don’t stay at each other’s houses, their hands intertwined as they swing between their bodies.
It’s a Friday night near the end of fall in their sophomore year when things change. They’re walking home from the movies. Alex can’t take it anymore.
“Henry,” he murmurs, waiting for Henry to glance up at him. He takes a brave step forward and presses their lips together in a gentle, somewhat awkward, kiss.
Henry fumbles with his keys before they fall to the porch. He pulls back after a minute. “Would you like to come inside?” he whispers.
“Of course.” Alex picks Henry’s keys up for him to let him unlock the door. He lets Henry hold his hand as they make their way inside.
They last less than twenty-four hours before telling everybody about their newfound relationship status, not that anybody is surprised.
They talk about their future, late at night, tucked under the blankets in each other’s arms. Henry’s beginning to outgrow Alex, but he still curls up against Alex’s chest. They talk about a nighttime wedding, maybe outdoors, on a crystal clear night. Alex teases that he’s going to wear a white tux while Henry wears a black one. Henry jokes that maybe he’ll pick a colorful tux to wear.
Even when they aren’t together, Alex dreams of their wedding. He thinks about what it’ll be like to stand in front of their friends and family and vow to love each other forever. He’s only fifteen, but he knows Henry is it for him.
They share their first time a week after Alex’s sixteenth birthday. Alex is slow with the prep so he doesn’t hurt Henry. It ends faster than either of them would like, but they can’t bring themselves to be embarrassed. (They get better at it over time, anyway)
On Henry’s 18th birthday, Arthur gives him a bottle of vodka and tells them to be safe, winking at them to be safe as he and Catherine leave for the night. They get drunk and watch Disney movies until 2am.
“I think I’ve loved you since the moment we met,” Henry says honestly, giggles leaving his lips. “I was entranced by you.”
“You were the only one who wanted to be around me.” Alex leans over and kisses Henry’s cheek. “You were my best friend from day one. I knew you’d always be in my life.”
“You did?”
Alex nods, smiling softly. “I did. I could see our wedding every time our parents brought it up. Even before I realized I was bi, I pictured myself marrying you. You’re it for me, Hen.”
“You’re it for me, too, love,” Henry whispers. “I love you so much, Alex.”
“I love you, too, Henry.”
They’re at graduation dinner with both of their families when Alex’s big mouth betrays him. They’re all laughing, discussing what life is gonna be like for Alex and Henry when they start college. They’re going to UT Austin for undergrad, and then the hope is to transfer to NYU. Henry knows they’ll make it.
Alex feels his heart skipping a beat as he watches Henry laugh, head thrown back. “Marry me,” he blurts out. He blushes when all eyes are on him.
“Wh-what?” Henry whispers.
“I just- I want you to marry me,” Alex says softly. “I have a ring- at home. I didn't plan to do this tonight.” He exhales shakily. “Will you marry me?”
“I kind of assumed that was a given, love,” Henry whispers, laughing quietly. “Yes. Yes, I’ll marry you, Alex.”
They share a sweet kiss as their families cheer for them. Their waitress brings them a slice of cake to share, and they fall into bed together that night.
They decide on a long-ish engagement. Alex suggests an outdoor wedding, and Henry suggests late fall so the weather is nice. They choose the following year after their engagement so they have plenty of time to plan.
By the time the wedding comes around a year and a half after their engagement, Alex finds himself standing up in front of their closest friends and family. He’s only nineteen, almost twenty, about to marry the man he’s known for thirteen years. The man he’s loved for five years. It takes everything in him not to run down the aisle when he sees Arthur and Henry walking towards him.
Oscar officiates the wedding. It’s short and sweet, Alex and Henry delivering their written vows with tears in their eyes. Within an hour, they are officially Alex and Henry Claremont-Diaz-Fox.
“I love you so much, Alex,” Henry whispers, foreheads pressed together.
Alex smiles softly. “I promise that I’ll love you for the rest of my life.”
Yeah, I see us in black and white
Crystal clear on a starlit night
In all your gorgeous colors
I promise that I’ll love you for the rest of my life
See you standin’ in your dress
Swear in front of all our friends
There’ll never be another
I promise that I’ll love you for the rest of my life
