Work Text:

Wind could tell that Aryll wanted to ask him something. She was fidgety and kept trying to speak, then stopped when she saw that one of the other Links could hear her. Wind excused himself, heading for the beach, and wasn’t surprised when his sister tugged on his hand.

“Big brother?” Aryll said, her eyes wide with curiosity. “Can I ask you a question?”

“Of course!” Wind bit back a smile, trying to look serious. He was so happy that his little sister still came to him when she had questions, after all.

“Your friend with the blue hat, Legend, is a boy, right?” Aryll asked quietly.

“Yeah, he’s a boy,” Wind confirmed.

“Then how come he wears a dress?”

Wind laughed, “He doesn’t wear a dress. They’re more like long, thick tunics. He doesn’t wear any pants or shiny armor like Time, so they’re just extra protective.”

“But it looks like a dress! Doesn’t it bother him that he looks like a girl?” Aryll protested.

Wind had to think about that before he answered, “I don’t think it does. The only time he really cared about how he looks was when his hair turned pink… and I guess he was more annoyed by Wars messing with it.”

“What if you wore a dress, and people called you a girl? Would that make you mad?” Aryll wondered.

“I would correct them, because I’m happy knowing that I’m a boy. Maybe Legend would too. I don’t know, because I’ve never asked him,” Wind explained.

Aryll bit her lip. “It’s okay if you don’t know. I didn’t wanna hurt Legend’s feelings but it’s not that important anyway.”

“Aryll, it’s always okay to ask questions. Legend’s nice too, he wouldn’t be mean if you talked to him,” Wind said, hugging his sister’s shoulders.

“Fine, I can go talk to Legend,” Aryll giggled, and hugged him back. “Thanks, big brother.”

“Mind if I tag along?” Wind asked. “Something tells me I have some things to learn, too.”

Notes:

Though he's not featured here, Legend is leaning towards genderqueer and doesn't mind being referred to as a boy, girl, or anything else. He's very patient with kids and Aryll will learn a lot from him as well.
