Work Text:

Sunny was awoken by a loud, irritating noise of his alarm clock. With a frustrated groan, he lifted his body from the bed, sitting up and looking around. His gaze landed on his phone that was located on the dresser next to his bed. He picked it up without hesitation and turned it on. There was one notification that was sent a couple minutes ago.

“It’s from Kel..” Sunny said to himself in a hushed tone, unlocking his phone to read the message.

‘ Good morning, Sunny! Happy birthday! :) If you have the time, could you come over to my place? ’

Huh. That’s.. odd. What does he need so early in the morning?” The black haired teenager questioned, but sent a reply either way.

‘ Morning to you, too. And thanks. I’ll be there in a few. ’

Now, all that was left to do was getting ready and going to visit Kel to see what he wanted. And so, naturally, Sunny got up from the bed, took his clothes and headed to the bathroom in order to change and brush his teeth.

Once that was done, he quickly headed outside and began walking to the Montoya household. It wasn’t a far trip, but it still took the black haired teenager some time. He was always a slow walker, after all.

When Sunny finally made it, he knocked on the front door. There was a moment of silence before he heard a small click, signaling that the door was now open. However, nobody came out. Not even Kel and Hero’s parents who usually asked him if he needed anything before eventually letting him inside. Sunny furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, but pushed the door handle forward and entered the house, closing the entrance behind him. To his surprise, it was pitch black.

He sucked in a breath before speaking in a slightly louder tone than usual. “Kel..? Hello? Is anybody home?”

There was no answer. Sunny thought that maybe he had the wrong house, but that would’ve been impossible. He’s been over at Kel’s place thousands of times now, so how could he get it wrong now?

Well, that’s because he didn’t.

The lights in the room suddenly turned on, revealing Kel, Hero, Basil and Aubrey standing right before Sunny. They had party hats on and Hero was even holding a birthday cake with candles on it.

Happy birthday, Sunny!” Everyone shouted as they started to clap their hands together. Kel and Hero’s parents stood in the corner of the room, smiles present on their faces.

As the noise settled down, Sunny couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh. “Thanks, guys..” He managed to say, the tips of his ears turning red in embarrassment.

“No problem, man!” Kel spoke, giving the black haired teenager a thumbs up.

“Yeah! We should probably go to the kitchen to cut the cake, though.. I don’t know how long I’ll be able to hold it before dropping it.” Hero added, feeling his hands turning numb.

The others nodded in agreement.

Everybody went to the kitchen, taking their seats as Hero placed the birthday cake down on the table and turned to look through the cupboards for a knife. Once he found it, he cut up the sweet treat. The others all took a plate for themselves and Hero put a slice of cake on each one of the platters.

When they finished eating, Hero looked at Sunny. “I wasn’t sure what flavor you’d like, so I just went with vanilla. I hope that’s okay..” He said, laughing nervously. Kel landed a hand on Hero’s back, which resulted in him flinching out of surprise and shooting the brunette an unamused look.

Jeez, loosen up a bit.” Kel said, snickering at his brothers’ tense behavior. He took his hand off of Hero’s back, not wanting to anger him by accident.

“It’s fine, Hero. The cake was good.” Sunny assures.

The older Montoya hummed in response.

So, Sunny, what do you wanna do now that it’s your seventeenth birthday, huh?” Aubrey asked, attempting to strike up a conversation.

“Not sure. We could all just hang out for now and.. play Monopoly or something.” The black haired teenager shrugged. Aubrey snorted at that, laughing and shaking her head in slight disbelief.

Monopoly? Seriously? Come on, there’s gotta be something else you wanna do.” She said, glancing between him and Kel with a smug expression on her face.

Sunny tilted his head to the side, thinking about what Aubrey had meant by that before realizing her implication. “I.. No, there’s nothing.” He said sternly, looking away from the pink haired girl.

Kel raised his eyebrows in confusion. “What was that supposed to mean..? Am I missing something here?” He asked.

Basil nodded. “Yeah, I’m not following either..”

Aubrey waved her hand in the air, brushing off the others’ concerns. “Nothing, nevermind. Sunny seemed to get what I mean and that’s what matters.” She spoke, a grin plastered across her face.

Okay.. Let’s just move on for now.” Hero suggested. He had noticed what Aubrey hinted at, but decided not to comment on it.

“Oh, you’re absolutely right, Hero. Actually, I think you, Basil and I should go upstairs to look for a board game that all of us could play. How about that?” The pink haired girl proposed. Basil now looked even more confused than earlier. Hero, on the other hand, just stayed silent, knowing that he’d have to comply either way.

“Sure, but.. What about Kel and Sunny?” Basil questioned. Aubrey glared at him. Her eyes, once again, darted between the two boys that they were speaking of. Basil finally understood her implication and nodded his head abruptly. “Oh. Okay, yeah. Let’s go.”

The three then proceeded to get up from their seats and leave the kitchen, waving goodbye to Sunny and Kel before running upstairs to look for a board game that everybody could play together.

“Well, uh.. That was..” Kel started, not knowing how exactly to describe the scene that just unfolded in front of them.

“..weird?” Sunny spoke, directing his attention to the brunette.

“Yeah! That was weird as hell.” The brunette confirmed, laughing.

The corner of Sunny’s mouth quirked up, forming a soft smile. “So.. What do we do now?” He asked.

“I dunno. What do you wanna do?” Kel shrugged.

The black haired teenager let out a sigh. “You know that I’m no good at making up ideas on the spot. The only thing that comes to my mind right now is to talk, but..” He said, trailing off.

“But.. what?” Kel questioned, standing up from the chair he was just sitting on to stretch his arms. He yawned, covering his mouth with his hand for a moment before letting it fall to his side.

Sunny also got up, gazing right into the others' eyes. “I wanted to tell you something. Just.. I can’t bring myself to say it. I don’t know how to describe it.” He explained, crossing his arms in annoyance.

“Then show me.” Kel replied immediately. He then noticed how that sounded and rephrased his words. “If you can, I mean..”

Wh.. What does that even mean?” Sunny spoke, seemingly shocked by the others’ bluntness. “Oh god.. Let me just..” He muttered, letting out a shaky breath.

Sunny then put his hands on the brunette’s cheeks, pulling Kel’s face closer to his own. Kel instinctively put his hands on the black haired teenager’s waist. Both of them were as red as tomatoes and Kel leaning closer to Sunny wasn’t helping either of them in trying to calm down. Their lips were practically only inches apart now.

Can.. Can I kiss you..?” The black haired teenager asked, his tone of voice breathy and shaky.

Kel nodded his head eagerly. “Please do.” He said, breathing heavily.

And without any further hesitation, Sunny closed the gap between his and Kel’s lips. At that moment, time felt like it had stopped. Nothing else in the world mattered. Nothing else other than the kiss that the both of the teenagers were currently sharing.

It felt like a breath of fresh air. It was as if both of the boys got taken to heaven for a good second or two.

But, of course, good things always come to an end, don’t they? And that’s what happened when Kel pulled away, trying to catch his breath.

“That was.. oh my god.” The brunette managed to muster out. He was trying to compose himself as best as he possibly could. Unfortunately, he was failing. Quite miserably, might I add.

Yeah.. Yeah, I know.” Sunny whispered, letting go of Kel’s face and backing up slightly. “Uh.. Does this mean you like me, too..? Because, well, I really like you. I.. I love you, Kel.”

“Of course, Sunny. I like you too. A lot.” Kel confessed, feeling his mouth curve into a smile.

“Does that mean that we’re dating, or..?” The black haired teenager questioned, his eyes lighting up ever so slightly. “That’s if you want us to.”

“Why wouldn’t I want to? I kissed you back, didn’t I?” The brunette spoke. “Of course I want us to be a couple. I wouldn’t dream of anything else.”

Sunny smiled. “I love you, Kel.”

“I love you too, Sunny.” Kel said.

Notes:

extra:

After the birthday party, Aubrey walked up to Sunny.
"About Kel.. Did you two lovebirds kiss or not?" She asked, crossing her arms.

Sunny sighed, feeling his cheeks turn red. "Yeah, why? We're, uh.. We're dating."

"YOU'RE WHAT NOW??"

..Aubrey later ended up ratting that information out to the group.
