Ash knew what was happening to him the moment he felt the knife stabbing him in the abdomen. First, his reflexes made him grab his gun and shoot Lao. Then, when the knife was out of his body, the adrenaline hit, and he started walking. He felt the blood pool in his sweater, but no pain yet. While he walked to the New York public library, clutching Eiji’s letter with all his might, he started feeling his heartbeat quicken, an effort from his body to keep the blood circulating.

Ash thinks he's the leopard getting to the peak of Kilimanjaro to die, and wants to bleed out at the New York public library. Someone helps, and he's saved, and now, he has to face his newfound freedom.

“There’s nothing there, Eiji. It’s just a pump for blood.”
“No. I know you. You read too many books to believe that. Too much Fitzgerald, too much Hemingway.”
“You like Stephen King. What do you know about Fitzgerald and Hemingway?”
“Not much. Only that they were drunks, and romantics.”

Summary
Birthdays had never meant much to Ash. Most years he let them slip by unnoticed, and the ones he remembered, he often wished he hadn't. Each one felt like a tally mark scratched into a body that had no right to make it this far, proof that time was still chasing him.
But those years are far behind him now, and the quiet safety he's stumbled into still feels like a stranger he has yet to be fully acquainted with.
In the tiny world they've created for themselves, Ash somehow finds himself looking forward to August 12th again. Not that he'd tell Eiji that. He doesn't have to, after all.
