Head Start

Chapter 7: How It's Going

Chapter Text

The second a tiny whimper escaped the twins' bassinet, Minghao was lifting his head from his pillow and squinting through the dark. "Which one of you is it?" He murmured as he shifted to sit up. Jie was still sleeping soundly curled up next to his brother while Bai was squirming in his swaddle, his face scrunched slightly. "Come here, dà bǎo." He gently picked the seven-week-old alpha up, cradling him in one arm while he used his free hand to lift his sweatshirt up.

It always took a little bit longer for Bai to get latched on, and by the time he was happily nursing, his crying had already woken Jun up too. "Everything okay?" The alpha asked tiredly.

Minghao nodded. "Just your typically Bai fussiness.  Jie's still sleeping."

Jun hummed and grabbed his phone to check the time, seeing that it was a little after 6:00. It never failed that one or both of the twins would wake up at that time wanting to nurse only to fall back asleep as soon as their tummies were full, leaving the parents unable to do the same as their bodies were telling them it was time to get up for the day. "I'll go make you tea." Jun said as he climbed out of bed. He leaned over to softly press his lips to Minghao's before leaving the room.

Minghao gently patted Bai's bottom as the newborn continued to suckle enthusiastically. "Today's a special day." Minghao murmured. "It's the Lunar New Year. That's why wàipó and wàigōng flew in from China yesterday."

Jun returned a few moments later with the spiced vanilla chai Minghao had gotten in the habit of drinking every morning, as the spiced vanilla lactation supplement powder that he used for it seemed to be the only thing that kept his milk production up enough to sustain both the twins. Minghao quietly thanked Jun as the alpha set his mug on the nightstand within reach, then puckered his lips so Jun would lean down and kiss him again. "Your parents are already up making dumplings so I'm gonna go help them." Minghao nodded, smiling a bit as Jun kissed him one more time before leaving the room again.

By the time Minghao finished his tea, Bai was finished nursing and had fallen back asleep, so Minghao carefully laid him back in the bassinet next to Jie who had begun to stir. Although he wasn't fully awake yet, Minghao knew it was imminent, so he gently picked him up and settled in to nurse him as well. Jie finished nursing much faster than Bai had, which was typical, and soon both twins were sleeping curled up together as Minghao padded into the bathroom to relieve his bladder. He then grabbed the empty mug from his nightstand and left the room.

His parents and Jun were sitting around the coffee table in the living room, filling dough for dumplings. "Good morning." Minghao greeted them, pausing to turn on the video monitor they kept by the couch for when they weren't in the room with the twins as they slept on his way to drop the mug off in the kitchen sink and wash his hands.

"How are the little treasures?" Minghao's mom asked as Minghao joined them at the coffee table.

"Sleeping away." Minghao said, reaching out to get a circle of dough and some filling.

"Junhui, what does your family usually do for the Lunar New Year?" Minghao's father asked the alpha.

"Pretty much this." Jun answered. "Although the past couple of years, the public library has been hosting a Lunar New Year celebration, so we've been going to that." He nodded to Minghao. "We talked about taking the boys to that this year but they're still so little and have only been home for a few weeks, so we decided it was best to wait until next year."

The four of them continued to chat as they made the dumplings for about an hour and a half before movement on the video monitor caught Minghao's eye. He looked to see that both twins were awake, neither of them fussing but they were wiggling in a clear sign of being ready to be set free from their swaddles. "Two little treasures have woken up." Minghao said moving to stand up.

"I'll get them." Jun said, jumping to his feet before Minghao could and heading down the hallway. He returned shortly after with a pup cradled in each arm. "They don't seem to be hungry just yet." Jun said.

"That'll change in a few seconds." Minghao said with a slight laugh as he reached out to take Jie from the alpha. "Hi there, èr bǎo." He pressed a kiss to the seven-week old's cheek before cradling him close to his chest.

Minghao's dad suddenly jumped to his feet. "Wàigōng has something for you two!" He disappeared down the hall for a moment and came back with two red and gold envelopes. "Don't spend it all in one place." He chuckled as he tucked the envelopes under the newborn's arms.

"Yes, because they definitely need money when they're not even two months old yet." Minghao laughed, taking the money envelopes from the pups and setting them to the side.

"It's never too early to start spoiling them." Minghao's dad argued.
