The Story of the Moon and Stars

Summary:

And to think, the moon's light was just as dim as the night itself. But now, it has changed—it is now the brightest object you could spot in the night beside the stars. Together, they shone and illuminated the empty night.

Or rather, together, they shone and illuminated their empty stage.

Work Text:

Stars.

He looked up, seeing as the white polka-dots took up every inch of the dark sky, littering the huge expanse of black. They emitted a dim light, not exactly doing the best job of lighting up the night. Right in the middle of it all, were dark blue clouds.

He rested his head against a cold fence made of metal, his purple hair going through the small space between the wires. The dim light of the stars and moon coats his body in silver shine, his entirety being illuminated under starry skies.

He takes in the sight once more.

While the dark blue clouds obscured his vision, covering his view of the moon, he could see the stars just the same.

It had always been that way.

For him, ever since he got here, he couldn't help but keep looking up at the night sky. The clouds were always covering the moon, tucking it in and distancing itself from other’s piercing gazes.

It’s successful, as no one could ever see right through it. However, you could still make out a fainter, dimmer light than what it's supposed to, that seeps through the blanket it hides itself in. Its outline is clear, as you could still see that it's round in shape.

This leaves the sky dark—an empty stage.

And what was left of the sky—

Were always the stars.

He supposes stars were created to fill in empty space, or as a stage prop made to glamor and shine. They don't do a terrible job at lighting up the sky, but not an amazing job either. He can't think of any other purpose for it, like it doesn't have an exact purpose for why it's there, it's just there.

But it's there. And he has a feeling it always will be.

.

.

.

.

He hears the rooftop door open—

.

.

.

.

Stars.

He looked up, seeing as the white polka-dots took up every inch of the dark sky, littering the huge expanse of black. They emitted a dim light, not exactly doing the best job of lighting up the night. Though if you looked closely, they glowed just a bit more. Right in the middle of it all, were dark blue clouds.

Though, if he were to take a closer look, the clouds seemed more transparent. Even just slightly.

.

.

.

.

“Fine! I’ll accept your direction!”

.

.

.

.

Stars.

He looked up, seeing as the white polka-dots took up every inch of the dark sky, littering the huge expanse of black. They emitted a dim light, not exactly doing the best job of lighting up the night. Though, he sees that they glowed brighter than before in his eyes. Right in the middle of it all, were dark blue clouds.

Something happened, he's sure, as the dark blue clouds seemed to fade, the change more apparent than the last.

He could see the moon much clearer now, despite there still being clouds obscuring his view. But to others, including him, who's never seen the moon this bright, it's something brand new.

.

.

.

.

“You don't have what it takes to become a star.”

And at that moment, the stars seemed to shatter.

.

.

.

.

Stars.

He looked up, seeing as less and less white polka-dots took up the dark sky, only a few littering the huge expanse of black. They emitted a dimmer light, admittedly doing a worse job at lighting up the night than before. They flickered and faded right before his eyes. Right in the middle of it all, were dark blue clouds.

The clouds seemed thicker, darker—obscuring even more of his sight. The moon hid itself once again, but this time, much less compliant to let itself out of its hiding spot.

He runs a hand through his hair as he continues to gaze out of his window. Something hungry pricks at his eyes.

And to think, the moon had finally glowed brighter. But now, it's light is dimmer than he’s seen before.

And now, it's back to the very start.

(Or so he thought—unbeknownst to him, the stars had other plans.)

.

.

.

.

He hears a series of footsteps approaching him. Looking up, the first thing he sees is blonde hair.

.

.

.

.

Stars.

He looked up, seeing as more white polka-dots took up every inch of the dark sky, littering the huge expanse of black. They emitted a stronger, brighter light, yet still not doing the best job at lighting up the night. Their light was persistent, yet they dim in his eyes. Right in the middle of it all, were dark blue clouds.

Despite the star’s seemingly brighter glow, the dimmed moon remained at its spot behind the clouds, its own stubbornness rivaling the stars.

Yet—the stars continued to glow.

.

.

.

.

“Won't you join our troupe again?”

.

.

.

.

Stars.

He looked up, seeing as many more white polka-dots took up every inch of the dark sky, littering the huge expanse of black. The light they emitted was blinding, completely lighting up the night with light that shone on twelve thousand lumens. Their light glimmered, full of hope, radiating an immense glow. The clouds faded entirely, and what's right in the middle of it all—

He stares at the stars for a second longer than necessary, before glancing at the outstretched palm Infront of him.

—Was the ever-glowing moon.

.

.

.

.

“Alright, but don’t go dissecting any plushies…” He grumbled.

.

.

.

.

“Rui-!!”

.

.

.

.

Stars.

He looked up, seeing as many more white polka-dots took up every inch of the dark sky, littering the huge expanse of black. The light they emitted was blinding, completely lighting up the night with light. What’s at the middle of it all was the ever-glowing moon. He finds himself mesmerized by it all, but his focus wasn’t entirely on that,

It was on the stars.

He finds himself staring at them far longer than he should nowadays.

.

.

.

.

His eyes, trained on—

.

.

.

.

—A star, something far too captivating to ignore.

.

.

.

.

Stars.

He looked up, seeing the white polka-dots and how they took up every inch of the dark sky, littering the huge expanse of black. The light they emitted was blinding, completely lighting up the night with light. He couldn't get himself to look at what's right in the middle of it all, as his gaze was lost on what’s right next to it.

He finds himself reaching out to the sky, motioning himself clasping around one of the stars. He places his clenched fist on his chest,

And listens to his own rapid heartbeat.

.

.

.

.

Stars.

He looked up, seeing the white polka-dots and how they took up every inch of the dark sky, littering the huge expanse of black. The light they emitted was so, so, blinding—yet he couldn't bear himself to look away. They completely lit up the night with hypnotizing light, capturing him within it.

What's right in the middle of it all is—

Was he seeing things, or did the moon move from it's initial spot on the middle to an inch closer to the stars?

.

.

.

.

Stars.

He looked up, seeing the white polka-dots and how they took up every inch of the dark sky, littering the huge expanse of black the light they emitted was incredibly blinding, yet they casted a serene spell that washed over him. They completely lit up the night with a comforting light, capturing him within it. What’s somewhat in the middle of it all was the ever-glowing moon.

He tries to look away from the stars to gaze at the moon instead. A rather tedious task, if he had to say so himself.

And to think, the moon's light was just as dim as the night itself. But now, it had changed—it is now the brightest object you could spot in the night beside the stars. Together, they shone and illuminated the empty night.

Or rather, together, they shone and illuminated their empty stage.

(That was when, he finds himself making an important realization)

.

.

.

.

“That's why—Tsukasa-kun.”

.

.

.

.

.

"Thank you for giving me the opportunity to change the way I have.”

With a final click of his pen, he sets it down and heaves a sigh full of satisfaction. He quickly flips through the pages, proofreading them one by one. Once he had checked if there were any mistakes, which there were little to none, he closed the book and kept it nicely tucked inside his bag.

He couldn't wait to show it to Tsukasa later.
