36 Questions - Working Title

Summary:

What if it was Kai that Sunless had to stay with for a week instead of Effie?

Notes:

Chapter 1: Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want most as a dinner guest?

Chapter Text

Sunny wasn't sure how he was going to survive this week without feeding his obnoxiously pretty new roommate to his other, much less attractive and much more violent, roommate downstairs. It wasn't that Kai was messy or rude or loud or anything other than a wonderful fucking person. The fact that he was a wonderful fucking person was the problem.

It first became a problem as soon as they arrived in the priestess' (now sunless') bedroom. There was only one bed and Kai - the gentlemen he was - insisted that he couldn't take the bed. "It wouldn't be right. It's your room and your bed; you take it," He claimed with that smug smile that was annoying as it was gorgeous.

Sunless sighed, this argument had been going on for a while now, "I'm mostly nocturnal, you can have the bed during the nights because I'm usually up and about then." Sunny stood from where he had sat on the floor and went towards a bag. "Come on," he said, calling over his shoulder, "Have some food. I've got enough to share." He held out some monster jerky to Kai, who took it quickly, as though he thought the offer was about to be rescinded and he was going to have to hunt on his own in the dark.

"Say," the young idol said between bites of meat, "living together will be hard if we don't know anything about each other, even if it is for just a week." Sunless thought he heard disappointment in Kai's voice when he said that last bit. He understood: he would hate sharing a room with him too. "We could ask each other questions?"

Sunless didn't want to hear the disappointed tone in Kai's melodic voice again but he didn't want to face another barrage of questions he didn't know the answer to. "You get one question and then I'm going out to hunt," Sunless decided.

Kai appeared to think for a bit before he asked, "Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want most as a dinner guest?"

"My little sister."

Curse his flaw. Why did Kai's question have to be so specific and difficult to work around? Usually get-to-know-you questions were vague and unspecific; as uninteresting as the person asking usually finds you.

Very few people knew Sunless had a sister. In fact, he could count them on one hand: The private investigator, Nephis and now Kai.

Not wanting to invite further scrutiny about such a sensitive topic, Sunless asked, feigning interest, "And you?"

"Right now? Gale. He was like my brother as well as being my best friend. Also, he made a really good curry. The things I would do for some of Gale's cooking."

Nephis had mentioned a Gale whilst fan-girling. He was Kai's bandmate. Sunless wondered what it would be like to have friends that weren't kept at arm's length; that were close enough be called like siblings.

Sunless headed out into the night before Kai could ask anything else.

Chapter 2: Would you like to be famous? In what way?

Chapter Text

Sunless came back after an extended hunt, hoping that Kai would be long asleep upon his return, only to see Kai sitting in front of the mirror next to the priestess' wardrobe, looking forlorn. His lips were downturned and his eyes were distant. Sunless stared, wondering how not even sadness could mar his perfect features. Kai's eyes drifted to meet his in the reflection and he smiled self-depreciatingly, "Would you like to be famous, Sunless?"

Sunless' mouth tried to wrestle away from his control as he shortened his answer to, "Not traditionally." His already loose tongue was somehow harder to control around his current charge.

Kai perked up at the vague answer, "In what way?"

Would much damage would Kai knowing this do? Him telling people wouldn't be a major set back. And even if it was, there's still a week for Kai to get into an 'accident'.

"I want to be infamous," he decided on saying, "I want people to hear my name and freeze with fear. I want them to never even dare think of messing with me."

The room is silent except for the sounds of their breathing and the movements of the monster downstairs. Sunless hadn't taken into account the effect Kai's response would have on his emotions. For some bizarre reason, the idea of Kai disapproving of his dream for fame left a little black hole to fester somewhere behind his sternum.

His eyes wandered carefully across Kai's face, searching against his will for any sign of disapproval or distaste or any other dreadful word beginning with 'd' that would mean that Kai lost any misplaced affection for Sunless that he may hold.

Not that Sunless cared what his charge thought of him: positive or negative. He had tried the 'carrying about others' opinions' schtick and look where that got him. He didn't need some random musician to approve of his goals, no matter how unfairly pretty said random musician was.

Was that a slight frown he saw on Kai's lips?

"Oh, Sunless," he froze as though searching for the right way to break Sunless' heart, "I'm so sorry."

The room must have had some left over dust from when Sunny had cleaned first cleaned the room because water was welling up in his eyes, distorting his view of the room and Kai's face. He shook his head and turned away from Kai's outstretched arm, "I'm going to get some air," he muttered mostly to himself as he walked away.
