Chapter 10: Waking Embers

Chapter Text

*****

The sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains in Felix's room, diffusing into a soft glow that bathed the space in a deceptive calm. His lids fluttered open reluctantly, heavy with the remnants of fragmented dreams that slipped away like water through fingers. A groan escaped his lips, deep and husky from sleep, as he twisted lazily in his sheets, the cotton cool against his bare arms.

The weight of the previous night pressed faintly on his chest. Memories surfaced in fragments—Hyunjin's sharp, haunting gaze, the tantalizing brush of tension so thick it felt tangible. Felix exhaled sharply, swinging his legs over the side of the bed, his feet meeting the chilled floor.

The mirror by his dresser caught his attention, reflecting his disheveled state: messy, coffee-colored locks tousled in a way that could pass for effortless style, and a faint flush still warming his cheekbones. A smirk ghosted his lips as he ran a hand through his hair, chuckling softly.

"Falling from grace already, Hwang?" he muttered, the words more to himself than anyone else.

The notion that Hyunjin—polished, calculated Hyunjin—had willingly entered his home and let his guard down was enough to stoke Felix's competitive fire. He could still feel the echoes of that moment, the magnetic interplay of dominance and defiance.

Rising, Felix padded toward the bathroom. Each motion felt deliberate, almost like a ritual as he washed his face and stared into the mirror again. "You're winning, Lix," he whispered, voice dripping with determination, though his thoughts betrayed him.

Across town, the stark, modern architecture of Hyunjin's mansion stood against the morning light, its clean, imposing lines a reflection of its owner's ironclad image. Inside, the air was electric with tension as his bodyguards hovered, their sharp suits and alert postures a stark contrast to the languid elegance with which Hyunjin descended the marble staircase.

"Boss."

The word came out clipped, almost hesitant, as the group turned to face him. Hyunjin's eyes, dark and piercing, flickered over them. His jet-black hair was tied back loosely, a few errant strands falling over his forehead, framing a face that was equal parts intimidating and exquisite.

"Good morning," Hyunjin drawled, his tone bordering on amusement as he slid his hands into his pockets.

"Sir, you were... unreachable," one began, his voice edged with concern.

Hyunjin arched a brow, his gaze narrowing slightly. "Am I not allowed a moment's respite?"

The guards shifted uncomfortably; their unease evident. One of them, bolder than the rest, stepped forward, handing Hyunjin a sleek tablet.

"Respite or not, sir, there's been movement. A shipment was intercepted near the southern docks. Rival groups are testing boundaries, and there's been chatter about—"

"Later," Hyunjin interrupted, his voice smooth but carrying an undeniable edge. "I'll address it when I'm ready."

The guards exchanged glances. One cleared his throat, his tone measured. "With all due respect, sir, the boy—Felix. He's... unpredictable. Dangerous, even."

At this, Hyunjin's lips curled into a smirk, sharp and knowing. "Felix?" he repeated, almost lazily, as if tasting the name. His voice dropped lower, each word deliberate. "Felix is... curious. A puzzle. Nothing I can't handle."

But even as he dismissed their warnings, Hyunjin knew the truth. Felix was more than curious. He was a spark threatening to ignite something Hyunjin wasn't prepared to confront.

Felix dressed quickly, pulling on a fitted sweater that clung to his frame in just the right places, paired with slim jeans that accentuated his lean, toned figure. He chose his accessories carefully—a silver chain that glinted subtly against his collarbone and a pair of blue-tinted contacts that added a hint of mischief to his gaze.

As he tied his sneakers, his mind wandered, replaying Hyunjin's smirk, his intense, calculating eyes. He shook his head with a scoff, muttering, "Get out of my head, Hwang."

Yet the idea of calling him lingered, a tempting thread he refused to pull. He knew better than to give Hyunjin the satisfaction. The man's private number was untouchable, a power play Felix both loathed and begrudgingly admired.

Meanwhile, in the vast, dimly lit expanse of Hyunjin's office, the mafia leader sat behind a mahogany desk, skimming through reports. The room was opulent, every detail meticulously curated—from the Persian rug beneath his chair to the abstract art adorning the walls. A crystal decanter of whiskey sat untouched on the sideboard, the amber liquid catching the light.

As his guards debriefed him on various matters—the docks, intercepted communications, an internal mole—Hyunjin's mind drifted. He traced the edge of a folder with a gloved finger, Felix's face flashing unbidden in his mind.

"Focus, Hyunjin," he muttered to himself, his voice barely audible.

But the longing was undeniable. The spark Felix ignited within him refused to dim, no matter how many fires he extinguished elsewhere.

Two days passed in a torturous limbo. For Felix, the hours dragged as he threw himself into mundane tasks—baking batches of brownies, sketching half-formed ideas, and wandering the rain-slicked streets of the city. For Hyunjin, it was a relentless cycle of meetings, decisions, and strategic moves, all of which felt hollow.

Until he decided enough was enough.

Standing in his walk-in closet, surrounded by an array of tailored suits and polished shoes, Hyunjin selected his armor for the evening: a black, double-breasted blazer with a silk lapel, paired with sleek trousers and a crisp white shirt unbuttoned just enough to tease. He fastened a single onyx cufflink, his movements precise, calculated.

"Inferno," he said to his assistant as he emerged, the word laced with command. "We're hosting tonight. And make sure Felix gets the message."

As the night descended, the city came alive, and the game they played stepped into its next, unpredictable act.

The sharp notes of Inferno's playlist echoed down the glistening streets, mingling with the low hum of expensive engines pulling up to the club's discreet entrance. The building stood as a beacon of decadence—a towering monolith cloaked in black, with only the occasional flash of red neon cutting through the darkness. Velvet ropes cordoned off the entrance, guarded by men in sleek suits whose expressions promised consequences for stepping out of line.

Inside, the atmosphere was alive with opulence. Chandeliers of crimson crystal refracted light across the cavernous space, casting shadows that danced on walls lined with deep velvet and golden filigree. The air was thick with the scent of amber and leather, undercut by the faint burn of liquor.

Hyunjin stepped through the arched threshold, his presence immediately commanding attention. The crowd parted instinctively, like moths retreating from a flame too hot to bear. His fitted black suit sculpted his frame with unnerving precision, the white shirt beneath teasing a sliver of his chest, an almost deliberate imbalance to his otherwise meticulous ensemble.

As he ascended the private staircase to the mezzanine, his gaze swept over the room below—an ocean of swaying bodies, clinking glasses, and whispered secrets. Yet he sought one person.

The plan was simple: bait Felix out of his stubborn game, lure him into Hyunjin's controlled domain, and see how he fared under pressure.

Meanwhile, Felix stood in his apartment, staring at the invitation that had been hand-delivered to his doorstep. The black card was heavy in his hand, embossed with gold that shimmered under the faint glow of his bedside lamp.

The message was succinct, bordering on cryptic.

"Inferno welcomes you. Be seen."

A scoff escaped his lips, yet his heart betrayed him with a quickened beat. Hyunjin's game was so obvious, and yet, Felix couldn't resist the urge to play.

He turned to his closet, considering his options. The look had to be perfect—enough to rival Hyunjin's overwhelming presence and claim control of the narrative. After a moment of deliberation, he chose a midnight-blue shirt that shimmered like silk under the light, paired with high-waisted black slacks that hugged his frame just right. A silver chain and subtle rings completed the look, adding a touch of edge to his bold sophistication.

Felix stared at his reflection, his lips curving into a smirk. "Your move, Hwang."

The moment Felix stepped into Inferno, the room seemed to shift. Heads turned, whispers ignited, and the tension thickened as if the very air had been charged with electricity. He walked with deliberate confidence, his sharp gaze sweeping over the crowd before landing on the mezzanine.

Hyunjin was already watching him.

Their eyes locked across the expanse, the distance between them collapsing in an instant. Felix's smirk widened, daring, almost mocking, as he ascended the staircase with measured strides.

"Inviting me here just to watch from afar?" Felix quipped as he approached, his deep voice laced with playful defiance.

Hyunjin leaned back against the velvet armrest of a chaise, legs crossed with the effortless grace of a king surveying his kingdom. His lips quirked into a smirk, his dark eyes glittering with equal parts amusement and challenge.

"I was curious if you'd come," Hyunjin replied, his tone smooth and unbothered, though the sharp edge beneath it betrayed the calculated nature of the invitation.

Felix crossed his arms, leaning against the railing as he peered down at the writhing crowd below. "And here I thought you'd run out of games to play."

Hyunjin chuckled softly, the sound low and velvety. "Games are only as fun as the opponents, kitten."

The nickname landed between them like a spark, and Felix's jaw tightened briefly before he forced himself to respond with nonchalance.

"Cute. But let's not pretend you're not just dying to lose for once."

Hyunjin tilted his head, his smirk deepening. "I don't lose."

Felix turned to face him fully, the sharpness in his gaze softened only by the flicker of intrigue dancing behind his blue contacts. "That so? Guess tonight's full of surprises."

The air between them grew heavier, the tension building like a coiled spring. Felix knew he was dancing dangerously close to the edge of Hyunjin's patience, and yet he couldn't bring himself to stop. There was something intoxicating about the way Hyunjin's jaw clenched, his composure fraying ever so slightly.

"Careful, Felix," Hyunjin warned, his voice dropping to a low purr. "You might not like what happens when you push me too far."

Felix leaned in closer, his lips curving into a mischievous grin. "Maybe I do."

The challenge lingered between them, the night teetering on the precipice of chaos.

Felix moved with deliberate precision, each step a calculated blend of mischief and seduction as he made his way across the lounge. The low lighting carved soft shadows across his form, accentuating the sharp lines of his midnight-blue shirt, which shimmered like liquid silk against his torso. The fabric hugged his figure, draping sensually over his toned shoulders and dipping just enough at the collar to reveal a teasing glimpse of his smooth collarbones. The high-waisted black slacks he wore cinched perfectly at his hips, flowing downward to highlight his long legs and their graceful, almost predatory movement.

Hyunjin's eyes never left him. From his vantage point on the velvet armchair, his lips quirked into a dark smirk, his gloved thumb brushing lazily against his lower lip as though testing his patience. His fitted suit emphasized every angle of his chiseled frame, the stark black fabric almost sculptural in how it contoured his broad chest and narrow waist. Even the faint sheen of the leather gloves stretched across his hands seemed intentional, adding to the dangerous edge of his aura.

Felix paused just shy of Hyunjin, the tension so palpable it felt like the room had hushed itself. Before he could speak, Hyunjin's bodyguards moved closer, their presence an unspoken barrier. They glanced at Felix with wary disapproval, their shoulders tightening as though ready to intervene at a moment's notice.

"Stand down," Hyunjin murmured, his voice low and commanding, laced with a quiet confidence that brooked no argument. "I've got this."

The guards hesitated, their loyalty warring with the order, but a subtle flick of Hyunjin's gloved fingers dismissed them.

Felix tilted his head, his eyes narrowing playfully as he raised a hand and gave the bodyguards a flippant wave. "Bye-bye, boys," he said, his tone dripping with sass.

As the guards retreated reluctantly, Felix turned his full attention back to Hyunjin. His expression shifted into something unreadable—part amusement, part hunger, part challenge. It was enough to make Hyunjin pause, though he masked it well behind the casual, relaxed tilt of his head.

"You've got an interesting gaze, kitten," Hyunjin drawled, his thumb pressing lightly against his teeth as his eyes roamed over Felix. "Feels like you're scheming something."

Felix didn't respond immediately, instead stepping closer with an almost lazy confidence, the silk of his shirt catching the dim, crimson light and casting faint glimmers across his chest. He stopped just shy of Hyunjin's legs, close enough that their proximity felt electric.

Hyunjin's eyes flicked downward, taking in the subtle curve of Felix's slim waist, the way his pants emphasized the taut lines of his thighs. A predator assessing his prey—or perhaps the reverse.

"Maybe I am," Felix finally replied, his voice low, almost a purr.

Hyunjin tilted his head further, watching intently as Felix's movements became bolder. His thumb lingered at his lips, the faint press of his teeth against the leather a testament to his thinly veiled restraint.

"You know," Hyunjin mused, his smirk widening, "there must be something in the air tonight. Seems to have you going wild. My untamed kitten."

The teasing moniker landed like a spark. Felix's jaw tightened momentarily, his blue-tinted eyes narrowing in mock indignation. But rather than rising to the bait with irritation, he leaned into it, taking another deliberate step forward.

"You think I'm the wild one?" Felix challenged, his voice soft yet edged with daring.

Before Hyunjin could respond, Felix pushed forward again, the tips of his legs brushing against Hyunjin's crossed thighs. Hyunjin arched a brow at the contact but didn't flinch, holding his ground with an infuriatingly calm demeanor.

Felix, however, wasn't finished. With a sly grin, he reached down, nudging Hyunjin's legs apart, forcing him to uncross them. Hyunjin's smirk faltered just slightly as Felix pushed further, coaxing his thighs into a broad, manspread position that left Hyunjin looking both commanding and vulnerable.

Felix leaned down until their faces were inches apart, his breath ghosting over Hyunjin's lips as he rested a hand against the back of the chair for balance. "Now," Felix murmured, his voice dripping with teasing venom, "who's wild again?"

Hyunjin's eyes burned into Felix's, dark and molten with a mixture of desire and amusement. He tilted his head slightly, his gaze trailing over Felix's face, lingering on the sharp angles of his jaw and the way his blue-tinted contacts gleamed like flames in the dim lighting.

"You really like to play with fire, don't you?" Hyunjin murmured, his voice low and gravelly.

Felix only smirked in response, the corner of his lips curving upwards as he swung one leg over Hyunjin's lap and straddled him effortlessly. The motion left no room for pretense, their bodies pressed close, the heat between them almost unbearable. Felix reached out, grabbing a fistful of Hyunjin's shirt, pulling him closer until there was barely an inch between their faces.

For a moment, neither spoke. The air crackled with tension as their gazes locked, Felix's blue eyes challenging and fierce, Hyunjin's dark and consuming. Felix leaned in slightly, the tip of his nose brushing against Hyunjin's as his lips parted ever so slightly.

Hyunjin's breath hitched, but he recovered quickly, his hands coming up to grip Felix's wrists, his gloved fingers wrapping around them like steel. "Careful, kitten," he whispered, his voice a dangerous rumble. "You're playing a game you might not win."

Felix tilted his head, his smirk widening. "Who said I came to win?" he replied, his voice barely above a whisper.

He leaned closer still, his lips brushing against the shell of Hyunjin's ear before ghosting down to his jawline. The contact was brief but deliberate, leaving a trail of heat in its wake. Felix's breath fanned over Hyunjin's skin as he whispered something low and provocative, the exact words lost in the cacophony of music and tension.

Hyunjin's grip on Felix's wrists tightened, his composure beginning to crack as a faint growl rumbled deep in his chest. His legs spread further beneath Felix, as if instinctively grounding himself against the onslaught of Felix's boldness.

With a low chuckle, Felix pulled back slightly, his smirk triumphant as he met Hyunjin's gaze again. But before he could say another word, Hyunjin's patience snapped.

In one swift motion, Hyunjin pulled Felix closer, his gloved hand cupping the back of Felix's neck as he crushed their lips together in a kiss that was anything but gentle. The collision was all heat and dominance, both of them refusing to yield even as their movements grew more fervent.

Felix responded in kind, his hands threading through Hyunjin's hair, tugging slightly as he deepened the kiss. The room around them seemed to fade away, leaving only the intoxicating push and pull of their battle for control.

The kiss deepened, a feverish clash of wills as neither Felix nor Hyunjin relented, their dominance colliding like sparks against steel. Felix angled his head slightly, his lips parting just enough to tease Hyunjin further, a soft growl escaping him when Hyunjin tugged him closer by the neck.

Hyunjin's gloved hand slid down Felix's back, the smooth leather a tantalizing contrast against the silk of Felix's shirt. His touch was firm, commanding, yet there was an underlying reverence in the way his fingers traced the lines of Felix's body, as though he were savoring every moment of their heated exchange.

Felix's lips curled into a smirk even as they moved against Hyunjin's, the audacity in his expression unmistakable. His free hand trailed down Hyunjin's chest, fingers ghosting over the buttons of his fitted suit jacket, before gripping the fabric at the lapels and pulling him even closer. The motion made Hyunjin lean back slightly, his body molding into the chair as Felix pressed forward, taking full advantage of his position atop Hyunjin's lap.

The dim lighting played tricks on their features, highlighting the sharp curve of Felix's jaw and the faint sheen of sweat gathering at Hyunjin's temple. Felix's blue-tinted eyes glimmered like twin flames, the faintest trace of amusement in their depths as he broke the kiss just enough to speak.

"Tell me, Hyunjin," Felix murmured, his voice a low purr that vibrated against Hyunjin's lips. "Still think I'm the kitten?"

Hyunjin's dark eyes narrowed, a dangerous smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. He tilted his head, leaning closer until his lips brushed against the shell of Felix's ear.

"Untamed," he corrected in a whisper that sent a shiver down Felix's spine. "But a kitten, nonetheless."

Felix let out a low, breathy laugh, the sound laced with equal parts defiance and allure. He leaned back just enough to look Hyunjin in the eye, his hands still gripping the fabric of Hyunjin's suit jacket. His gaze was intense, unwavering, the smirk on his lips daring Hyunjin to say more.

And Hyunjin did, his tone dripping with mockery and heat as he added, "You've got claws, I'll give you that. But even the fiercest kitten knows when it's outmatched."

Felix's eyes narrowed, his smirk growing sharper. Without a word, he shifted his weight, grinding his hips against Hyunjin's in a movement so deliberate it left Hyunjin's breath hitching, his calm veneer cracking ever so slightly.

"Outmatched?" Felix echoed, his voice smooth, dripping with mock disbelief. He leaned in once more, brushing his lips against Hyunjin's jawline, his breath warm against Hyunjin's skin. "You sure about that, pretty boy?"

Hyunjin's hands moved again, one gripping Felix's wrist with a firmness that spoke of control, the other sliding up to tangle in Felix's hair. His smirk returned, sharper this time, his voice low and laden with intent.

"Careful, Felix," Hyunjin warned, his tone both teasing and predatory. "You're playing with fire. And I don't burn easily."

Felix's lips curled into a grin, his confidence unshaken. "Good," he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. "Because I don't intend to stop."

Their gazes locked again, the room around them forgotten as the tension between them mounted, electric and all-consuming. Felix leaned in slowly, his lips brushing against Hyunjin's earlobe in a fleeting kiss before trailing down the sharp line of his jaw, each movement deliberate, calculated to elicit a reaction.

Hyunjin's grip on Felix tightened, his composure fraying as a low growl escaped him. His legs spread further under Felix, an instinctive movement that betrayed his growing desire to dominate the situation even as Felix continued to press forward.

Felix chuckled softly, the sound vibrating against Hyunjin's skin. "Looks like you're enjoying this as much as I am," he whispered, his tone laced with wicked amusement.

Hyunjin's response was immediate. He pulled Felix even closer, his gloved hand sliding down to rest firmly at the small of Felix's back, anchoring him in place. "You're bold," he murmured, his voice a dark, velvety promise. "But boldness doesn't equal control."

Their lips collided again, the kiss deeper, rougher this time—a battle neither intended to lose. Felix's hands moved to Hyunjin's shoulders, gripping tightly as he matched every ounce of Hyunjin's fervor with his own. The push and pull of their dominance played out in every movement, every breath, every kiss, neither willing to submit, both determined to leave the other undone.

For a moment, it was impossible to tell who had the upper hand, their movements so perfectly matched, their desire so raw and unrelenting. Felix's hands slipped to Hyunjin's tie, pulling it just enough to assert his presence, his smirk never wavering even as Hyunjin's gloved fingers trailed up his spine in a touch that was both possessive and reverent.

In the dim light of the lounge, they were a picture of untamed passion—a collision of fire and ice, each daring the other to surrender, neither willing to give in.
