Chapter Text
Rhett opened his eyes and he was in their office, standing right next to the window where he had been when this whole thing began. He looked up at the star that gave him so much and smiled. He had to go find Link. He knew that Link would be at his house in the morning, but he couldn't wait that long.
Link has been waiting too long already. He never wanted him to have to wait again. Rhett jumped into his car and headed for Link's house, buzzing with excitement. When he pulled up in the driveway, he realized that Link wasn't there. His car wasn't in the driveway and all the lights were off inside.
Disappoinment welled up in Rhett's heart as he took in the scene. "Where is he? Did he finally give up on waiting for me?"
Rhett drove back to his house, unable to fathom where Link could have gone. He could be anywhere. He could be on a date! Rhett had now worked himself into a panic. What if Link changed his mind? What if he didn't want to wait for Rhett anymore and he had found someone else?
Tears trailed down Rhett's cheeks as he pulled up to his lonely house. He wanted Link. He didn't want to be alone, but that's what he deserved right? It's only fair after what he put Link through. He went in the door and just stood in the dim house, illuminated by the glow of the Christmas tree in the corner.
He couldn't seem to stop the tears as he went straight up to his bed. He kicked off his shoes and just flopped into bed without even changing his clothes. As soon as he hit the mattress, he felt something move beneath him. He yelled and so did Link, as he had just been completely sat on.
"What are you doing here??" Rhett shrieked. He quickly clicked on the lamp to see Link's half-asleep, startled face.
"I came to surprise you and you practically squished me to death. Jesus!"
"Why are you in my bed? I mean, I'm not complaining, but why...where is your car? I didn't see it when I pulled up."
"I parked down the street. What part of surprise are you not understanding? Not much of a surprise if my car is in your driveway Rhett!"
Link smiled his biggest mega-watt smile and pulled Rhett down into a kiss that promised so many things. Rhett melted into him, letting Link take the lead.
"How...how did you know tonight was the night?"
"The star Rhett. You mentioned the star on the last trip to see me. I was so sad earlier tonight because I just wanted spend Christmas with you, THIS you, and I knew I would be disappointed yet again, but then you told me to come wish on the star. I don't think I've ever been that nervous or excited. Watching you make the wish that changed our lives. I had to get out of there because I wanted you to get started!"
Link laughed as he continued to kiss Rhett's face, wiping the tears from his eyes and snuggling close.
"Always such a cuddler," Rhett said fondly.
"I decided to come here and wait for you to surprise you, but then you took forever and I guess I fell asleep."
Link blushed, embarrassed that he had ruined his own surprise. They sat side by side for a moment on the bed's edge, before Rhett pulled Link into his lap, squeezing him as tightly as he could.
"Well, the surprise was a success in my book and it isn't like you are ever leaving this bed again, so I hope you enjoy it."
"Oh really, is this my home now? I live between your sheets?"
"Your home is right here Link," and he pressed Link's palm to his chest. Link felt Rhett's heart beating, one of his favorite sounds in the world.
"You aren't still afraid to let people know about us? You don't have to change your whole life all at once. This has been years in the making for me, but hours for you. I don't want you to start something that you aren't ready for."
Link looked down, unable to make eye contact with Rhett. He knew that this man had the power to destroy him emotionally, but he placed his heart willingly into Rhett's hands, just like he'd done 1000 times before.
Rhett flipped Link over onto the mattress and smiled as he started to undo the buttons on Link's ridiculous Christmas pajamas. "The only thing I'm not ready for is how long it may take for your house to sell so I can keep you here forever. We are doing this Link. You and me. It's always been you and me. Wherever you go, I go."
Link sighed and leaned back, ready to spend the rest of the evening doing everything he'd fantasized about. He was going to be the one in charge, but maybe not until after Rhett finished whatever he had planned as he opened Link's pajama bottoms. Link was finally where he belonged.
"Just me and you Rhett. Always."
Epilogue:
Stevie got a notification on her phone on New Year's Eve. Rhett was doing an Instagram Livestream, which was highly unusual. She was at a party with a lot of the Mythical crew, ringing in the New Year. Chase sat beside her on the couch as she pulled up the Livestream. Her jaw dropped as she took in the scene.
Rhett and Link were wearing beautifully tailored suits. Rhett's was black and Link's was white. They were in front of an Elvis impersonator in what looked like a cheesy chapel in Vegas.
"Are they streaming....a Wedding??? THEIR wedding?," Stevie shrieked.
Chase laughed as he pulled the phone from her hands, watching as Rhett and Link laughed, smiling at each other like nothing else in the world existed.
Rhett turned to the camera and said "I finally put a ring on it".
Link grinned and said "Let's talk about that," as the video faded to black.
