happy (?) new year

Summary:

Grian laid face down on the bed, biting the inside of his cheek to keep himself from crying. He didn't even know why he felt so miserable, just that he had been enjoying the New Years party with his friends and suddenly everything had been caving in on him. There was a hole in his heart, eating away at him, taking away his enjoyment.

I was originally intending to post this at midnight on the dot for the new year but things got in the way so have this a day late <3

enjoy this short drabble of grian suffering and scar comforting!

Work Text:

Grian laid face down on the bed, biting the inside of his cheek to keep himself from crying. He didn't even know why he felt so miserable, just that he had been enjoying the New Years party with his friends and suddenly everything had been caving in on him. There was a hole in his heart, eating away at him, taking away his enjoyment. 

He was just so tired. After his celebrations with his fellow heroes, he was supposed to go out on patrol as Cuteguy. Then he was going to go out as Mimic in the morning, when his shift was over. He wouldn't get any sleep, not that he normally did. He would stay out until he felt like passing out, then he would go to his apartment and change. Then it was back to the Hero Tower to finally rest for a few hours before going back out as Cuteguy again. A never ending cycle, one that he had trapped himself in.

He curled up into a ball, gathering his blankets around himself, tears pooling in the corners of his eyes. A sob dragged its way out of his throat, strangled and broken, and once it broke free, more followed it. He was stuck. He was exhausted, there was so much sitting on his shoulders, and yet he couldn't rest. He couldn't take a break. He couldn't do anything. He had to keep going on, had to keep balancing this tightrope of hero and villain until he got discovered and locked away. 

A part of him wanted to be caught. He was so tired. He just wanted to rest. He wouldn't have any responsibility if he was locked up. He could finally relax. 

"Hey." Scar's voice broke through his spiral, and a moment later, a hand gently touched the space between his wings, brushing the smaller feathers with his fingers. "Hey, Grian, it's me. I'm here." 

Grian uncurled from his ball to wrap around Scar, who directed him to rest his head against his chest. He leaned back against the headboard, bringing Grian along with him. Grian shuddered and sank into him, tears still dripping down his face, and he buried himself in Scar's sweater. 

"I've got you." Scar murmured, holding him close. "It's okay."

"Sorry." Grian whispers. "You should be downstairs partying."

"I'd much rather spend new year's with you." Scar replied easily.

Grian lifted his head to look up at him, a frown on his face. "But... you're missing out."

Scar shook his head. "Nah, I'm not missing anything. And I'd rather miss out on the big party than miss out on being with you."

"Oh." Grian set his head back down. "You sure?"

Scar scratched idly at his hair, running his fingers through his hair and massaging the base of his head wings. "Yep."

Grian leaned into his touch, closing his eyes. A few more tears slipped down his face, but for the most part, he was done crying. 

"Do you want to talk about it?" Scar asked softly, and he shook his head. "Okay. We don't have to."

From below, the muffled sound of counting down echoed up through the floors. Scar quietly counted along with them, the bell tower tolling outside once they hit zero and the new year began. Scar pressed a soft kiss into Grian's hair.

"Happy New Year, Grian." He said gently. "This year, we're going to change things. We're going to bring this to an end. I don't know exactly why you're upset, but I can guess a few things, and we're going to make things easier. I promise. And if you need to take a break, please, just tell me. I can help."

Grian held onto him a little bit tighter, wrapping his wings around him. "I love you."

"I love you too." Scar hummed, petting his feathers.

"Happy New Year." Grian tilted his head up one last time to kiss him on the bottom of his jaw, too slumped to kiss his cheek properly. 

"Here's to the future." Scar scooted forward, then laid down on the bed, carrying Grian with him in a move that he had done dozens of times before. "Let's hope we can make it better."

Notes:

I won't lie, I had a rough new year, so I might be projecting a bit on grian. but it's okay! it's just fine, in fine, everything's fine. I'm not having a crisis. probably.

I hope you guys don't mind the amount of warmups I've been posting, it's been a rough month and I'm still trying to recover from school burnout, so that's why things have been shorter and rougher <3

expect some more smilers content as well as more of this au and more spotify warmups in this new year! as always, your comments keep me going and I really really appreciate them :]
