"New Year's Eve"

Chapter 5: "New Year's Eve" Part Five

Summary:

Trina talks to Kai and Spencer. One couple rings in the New Year together.

Notes:

Sticking to the title, this story begins on New Year's Eve and ends with the clock striking midnight. While there are many different directions this story could take after this point, this is the end of my story. I hope that you will enjoy it.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

This is a short story based on characters that I do not own and references to established works.

"New Year's Eve"
Part Five

"A matched pair," Spencer thought to himself as a smile came across his face. Despite feeling hopeless only minutes earlier when Trina walked out, Spencer saw the one thing that could give him all the hope he needed-hope that Trina would choose him and their love for each other. It was something that he felt symbolized his and Trina's love perfectly. And seeing it there, so very close to where Trina slept every night, let Spencer know. Trina's dove let him know that there was no way that he had been forgotten... or replaced.

"Every morning when she wakes up and every night when she gets ready to go to sleep, the first thing and the last thing she sees is her dove. And when she sees it, she must think of that day when we exchanged them and said that we belong together. So, of course I have to think that she thinks about... me," Spencer thought... and hoped.

When she saw Trina enter the room, Joss excused herself to her bedroom to leave Trina and Kai alone. Kai stood, as Trina came over to where he was. She looked up at him and gave him an encouraging smile. "Let's sit," she said, as she took one of his hands.

"Are you ok?" Kai asked sweetly as he searched Trina's eyes to see if he could gauge how she was feeling.

"Hmph. Yet another reason for me to love you," Trina replied. "I let you walk out and didn't go after you immediately, yet you want to know if I'm, ok? Kai Taylor, what a great guy you are. And as far as being "ok", I'm not, but I will be... in time."

Kai responded with a weak smile. He wasn't quite sure what to make of her response. So, he sat and waited patiently for Trina to continue.

Before she did, Trina took a deep breath. She needed to make sure that she was as focused as possible when she spoke to both Kai and Spencer. They both deserved nothing less than her complete attention. And even though she was fairly sure about what she wanted to say to the two men she loved; she felt that the actual words would only come once she looked each one in his eyes.

"Well, that was Spencer," Trina joked nervously.

Kai, appreciating Trina's attempt to lighten the mood before things had to get serious and real, laughed a slight nervous laugh.

"That I gathered. I can't imagine what you thought when you saw him and realized that it was actually him," Kai replied.

"Complete shock, disbelief, and... relief. When he went in the water that night... that oh so horrible night, I was beyond devastated. But that feeling only magnified when we had to leave Paris without him. There was a massive search for him in the waters all around the area where he went in, but..." Trina cleared her throat as memories of that night threatened to overwhelm her. "But no one could find him, saying that there was no way he could have survived in those cold waters. So, finally knowing... and seeing him is definitely a relief."

"I'm glad that your mind can rest in knowing that" a sympathetic Kai replied. And while he didn't mind being a sounding board for Trina as she shared her thoughts about Spencer returning, Kai desperately wanted to hear Trina talk about... the two of them. For he had not forgotten that the woman in front of him loved him. He knew because she had told him so.

Trina smiled at Kai in response. "Thank you for that, Kai," she said. "And thank you so much for giving me my smile back." That was the moment when Trina reached out to Kai and hugged him so tightly. She needed him to feel her love in that hug. He did. So much so that when she was ready to pull away, Kai was slow to let go. Something in him knew that once he did, he'd never get another chance to hold her. So, he held her... until he knew that he had to let go.

Trina's head was down as they came out of their release. She didn't want to look up because she didn't want him to see her tears. They were tears that she had fought hard to control when she was talking to Kai- but she could control them no more.

That's when Kai knew that, despite how he was feeling, he would have to be the strong one to help Trina do what she had to do.

"Trina," he said tenderly as he took his hand to lift up her chin. "It's ok. I'm here and I'm listening."

With tears in her eyes, Trina struggled but found herself ready to continue.

"Getting my smile back because of you has meant so much to me, Kai," Trina started, picking up from her last words to him. "And for giving me my smile back, I will forever be grateful..."

And in that moment, Kai realized that an inevitable "but" was on its way and once it was said, he knew what it would mean.

That dove. Her dove on her nightstand. Spencer could hardly contain how that made him feel. It had to mean that there was no way he had gotten back to Trina just to lose her again. No, her dove was validation that he would get exactly what he had hoped to get out of that night- to kiss Trina at the stroke of midnight and to start their lives together again.

So, in preparation for that, with his eyes still on the dove, Spencer pulled out two boxes from his jacket pockets. He opened up the first one. It was the engagement ring that he hoped to put on Trina's finger. It was also a replica of the one he had planned on giving her in Paris. And in the second one was his dove-all set to reunite with its mate. Spencer, too, was all set to reunite with Trina. And, he had decided, he was prepared to wait and stay right there until she had done what she needed to do... so that she could come back to him.

"But, despite giving me my smile back, " she sniffed. "Spencer brought my heart back to me. And there's no way that I can live without my heart."

Even though she could have left it there, Trina knew that Kai deserved more and that he deserved better. So, she continued.

"Ever since that night, nearly two years ago, I haven't felt whole. That's because I lost my twin flame, my soulmate... my heart. And I spent months spiraling between sadness and anger and anger and sadness.

"Anger for Spencer, who lost his life tragically and senselessly. And sadness for, selfishly, me. Sadness because my first and great love was taken from me. But now Kai, my heart's found its way back to me. And as soon as I held Spencer, I felt fully complete for the first time since our last time together," Trina shared tenderly. "And Kai, if there was any way to keep from hurting you, you have to know that I would. But Spencer and I truly belong together."

At this point, Kai's eyes were tear-filled, yet he nodded as Trina spoke. "Spencer Cassadine is a lucky man," he said.

"Happy New Year, Kai," Trina said softly, as she placed a kiss on his cheek.

"Happy New Year, Trina," Kai replied, as he prepared to get up to leave. However, Trina got his hand and pulled on it. So, he stayed where he was while Trina made a quick exit and an equally quick return with Joss, who was all set to make sure that he got home ok.

Spencer, true to his word, remained where he was waiting for Trina to come back. And after a while, he heard the doorknob begin to turn. His heart began to race. Even though he had felt confident that Trina was coming back to him, his confidence became just a little shaky. "What if she sent Joss to tell me that she and whoever that Kai is left to give me a chance to disappear again with some dignity?" he thought to himself. He shook his head and reminded himself that he and Trina belonged together. "It's her. It has to be Trina," he thought as he watched and waited to see who was on the other side of the door. And when he saw Trina, his Trina there in the doorway, he couldn't wait. Spencer got to her as quickly as he could, lifted her up, twirled her around, and gave her the longest and most passionate kiss possible... one that she eagerly accepted.

When they came up for air, their smiles were equally wide in size.

"Hi," Spencer said.

"Hi," Trina replied.

And out of the corner of her eye, Trina noticed that her dove was no longer by itself. Spencer saw that and smiled even more.

He took her hand, and they walked over to her bed. "Yes, our doves... back together again," he said.

"As they, and we, should be," she said softly.

Spencer took that moment to help Trina take a seat on the bed, while he remained standing... until he fell to one knee, with the box holding the engagement ring.

"Trina Robinson, will you marry me and make this the happiest New Year ever?" he asked.

"Of course I will," she replied as he slipped the ring on her finger, and they shared a short kiss. Neither prolonged the proposal process because all the missed time they had experienced had taught them both that time was not to be wasted.

"Oh, let me see your watch," Trina said as she quickly reached for his wrist.

"Just in time," he replied as he saw the time.

"8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... Happy New Year, Spencer!"

"Happy New Year, Trina Robinson!"

Notes:

I enjoyed writing this fic as it showed how powerful love can be and it also allowed me to write Trina as the object of desire from two men, who both only wanted to love her. I hope that Trina is able to get her true love back on the show, at some point.

Notes:

I am Team Sprina through and through, so to have Trina being in love with someone else was difficult for me to write-and Part Two only gets worse. I hope that the way that I wrote for Trina and Kai was believable enough to see them as a couple. Also, I know that I have a lot going on with hands in this fic; but it's because the hands were always busy when Spencer and Trina were together. So, I guess I couldn't keep from including that in this.
