Purpose

Summary:

Loki, banished from Asgard for betraying the family, lands in China. Lost and desperate, he has no choice but to accept shelter from the Shaolin. Meanwhile, Thor is forced to deal with an upcoming war, starting because of his reckless actions. Will Loki learn to cherish life? Will Thor learn responsibility now that no one is present to act in his shadow?

Chapter 1: Midgard

Chapter Text

Liu Kang wasn't sure what to think of the newcomer. The man, barely in his 20s, appeared to be a westerner. He had short black curly hair that he forcibly kept straight, and slicked back. He was small looking, and hardly muscular, yet was stronger than the average human. Shujinko had brought him to the temple after bumping into him in the market, and said his name was 'Loki'. Loki himself did not confirm or deny. Even with the new clothes he was given he stuck out thanks to his features and pale skin.

Loki definitely knew more than he let on. He was quiet and observant. His green eyes studied the other Shaolin warriors with such suspicion and patience that it made Liu Kang wonder what his motives were. Even though he knew they could be trusted, Loki did not act comfortable with them. He ate in silence, minded his business, and only answered yes or no questions by nodding or shaking his head. He was spectacular with knives, and excellent with bo staffs. He preferred elegant movements, and practised his kata in silence.

He either learned quickly, or had already known how to wield those weapons before hand.

Shujinko believed that Loki refused to speak out of shock.

"The boy seemed lost. He was looking around, panicking, and when I approached him he was immediately on guard. He said he was Loki of Asgard. I don't think he is from this realm, but I don't have any evidence of this."

Loki would open up in his own time. If there was the chance he never would, they would have to respect it.

All suspicions Liu Kang had with Loki aside, the boy was patient, and obedient. He followed instructions carefully, and respected everyone. He always waited for something, like he was expecting to be ridiculed, and was surprised with the bare minimum. He was graceful in his movements, like a prince, but he didn't act like he was above anyone.

"I am sensing a cold energy from him, Liu Kang," Raiden told him, "He is human, but not so."

"I don't believe he should be here, Lord Raiden," Liu Kang protested, "A foreigner who is lost? We should send him back home, not attempt to turn him into a warrior."

"I suspect he's been let out. I cannot figure out why, but it cannot be anything good. Loki has a destiny, but his circumstances led him to us."

Chapter Text

If Loki didn't know better he'd have guessed he was in Vanaheim. Of course, not everyone in Vanaheim had slanted eyes. There was Frigga, who had been a princess of Vanaheim before Odin took her. She herself fit into the Asgardian beauty standard.

Loki did not want to believe he was in Midgard, but here he was. His magic was completely gone, though he thankfully still had his All Speak.

He had known that there were gods outside of Asgard, but even his knowledge of them was limited. Raiden was the opposite of Odin, and Loki was shocked upon meeting him. It didn't help that he got the impression that Raiden was far more ancient, and knew things that even Odin didn't. Odin was once worshipped, but Raiden continually so. Outside of that, Raiden didn't care for praise, only the betterment of Earthrealm. He didn't treat Loki as if he were beneath. Loki wondered what Raiden would think if he ever found out who and what Loki truly was.

Though stern, there was something warm about the thunder god. Loki wasn't sure if it was his neutral tone towards him, or the lightning, but Loki was comforted by it.

The only problem was that he was still learning to read Mandarin.

Loki didn't like feeling babied, but what choice did he have? He couldn't read the language, and if he wanted to exploit the library outside of training time, he would have to learn the basics.

"This Pinyin here says cha (tea). These two say mifan (rice)," Kai gestured as he spoke.

Loki massaged his temple, "This is confusing."

"All language is, Loki. It only becomes simple once you break it down. For example Meiguo and Yingguo. Guo refers to the land."

"I'm going to assume mi and fan mean two different things when separated?"

"Exactly!" Kai exclaimed, "You're getting it."

Kai had been with the Shaolin longer than Loki, but he was new as well. Raiden figured it would be best to pair them together. Loki would be his roommate for as long as he stayed.

"Are you going to be training with us later?"

Loki looked up from the book, "With who?"

"Me, Liu Kang and Kung Lao."

Loki winced, "Liu Kang is loud."

Kai chuckled, "He can't help it. Besides, practising with someone will help in improving your skills."

Loki thought about it. There was nothing new about training with others. Being a prince of Asgard, Loki was required to be prepared for a war, and had unfortunately suffered the ridicule of Sif and Fandral. Volstagg and Hogun occasionally. None of them had magic, and if Loki used his own against them he would be called a cheater. It would be beneficial to go against people who did have additional abilities.

Loki followed Kai to the training grounds. Liu Kang and Kung Lao were already sparing together. Kung Lao tossed his hat, and as Liu Kang dodged it, Kung Lao spotted them.

He grinned at them, "Loki, you're finally joining us!" He caught his hat without looking.

Loki greeted them with a bow, "Kai talked me out of my shell."

Liu Kang went over to the side and picked up a spear off the ground. A silver one that loosely resembled Gungnir. He handed it over to Loki, who took it, uncertain.

"Shujinko left this for you. He requested that we hand it to you as soon as we saw you. It's a present from him."

Loki stiffened, "Shujinko was here?"

Kung Lao grinned, "Yes, he left on a visit. That old geezer's always running around on an errand."

"He's visiting realms. Most likely investigating," Liu Kang looked Loki up and down as he said this. "Nothing too important, though. He should be back soon."

"Well, test it out." Kai urged, stepping back to give Loki some space.

Loki began to twirl it as he would a staff. Once he was done he gave it a light tap, a small smile growing on his face.

"It's not as creative as Lao's hat, but I think it suits me," he playfully pointed it towards them, "Kneel before your prince."

They snorted.

Liu Kang tried to refrain from smiling, "You don't look like a prince, you look like a guardsman."

"Guardsman, eh?" Loki wondered. It was better than being called a trickster. "Who will I be protecting?"

Watching from afar was Raiden. Next to him was Fujin.

He smiled warmly, "I am relieved Loki is finally showing this side of himself."

Fujin hummed. "When someone is surrounded by the wrong people, their spark tends to die out."

Raiden turned to him, "What are you saying, brother?"

"I suspect Loki isn't used to friendly company. That's why he was so withdrawn in the beginning."

"Yes," Raiden's face darkened as he thought about it, "He was confused by everything. It's like he expects criticism, or to be left alone."

"Wherever he comes from, he wasn't treated decently."

Raiden tilted his head, "We shouldn't say that so soon. He could've been a trouble maker."

"But with the way he carries himself, and his attitude towards everyone?" Fujin questioned, "What trouble could he have brought unless provoked?"

Notes:

I don't think Raiden and Fujin would care about race or species, they only care about good and bad, and how much threat someone poses to Earthrealm. If they both met Avengers Loki then I think Raiden wouldn't be sympathetic, but Fujin certainly would. Then again, Raiden was sympathetic to Kitana even though she starts off as a villain in the beginning. Raiden is more sceptical and harsh, Fujin is also harsh but more pitying.

I'm trying to keep everyone in character, especially Loki. He isn't Avengers Loki, so I'd imagine that he's a lot friendlier and youthful. It's been a long time since I've seen Thor 1 (2011), but I'll continue doing research to make sure I'm up to par with everything.
Of course, with Mortal Kombat's timeline thing, I can do whatever inconsistencies in regards to Earthrealm and the tournament.

Chapter Text

Training with Shujinko was different. It was more personal and less distracting. Although the jeers and teases were fun, having a more serious atmosphere was more helpful.

"Focus, Loki!" he heard Shujinko, "Control your breathing."

Loki tried to do so as he continued switching poses, "May I ask, what is this exercise for?"

"We're trying to harness your powers."

"My powers? I don't have magic."

"Not magic. Abilities you were born with, Loki," Shujinko stood straight, his kind eyes inspecting Loki. "Your familiarity with the staff reminded me of someone. The fighting styles I taught you are the ones he taught me. His name is Hotaru, and he comes from Seido, the realm of Order. When we first met, I thought you were sent from there until you introduced yourself."

Loki rose a brow, "Order?"

"A realm that prioritises maintaining order, and is at war with chaos. The rulers are level-headed, and believe in logic."

"That sounds fun." Loki shrugged.

Shujinko almost groaned, "Oh, no, Loki. You would hate Seido. They would smell the mischief from you."

"Why did you choose Hotaru?"

"He had abilities, but behaved as if he had one. He could shoot lava from his hands, and only did so when the time came. I don't think he could practise it- Or rejected it, more likely. There is great power in you, Loki. I don't want that power to remain contained and barely controllable."

Shujinko went back into position, and Loki mimicked the Pi Gua movements. Suddenly, something shot out of his hands. It smacked onto the ground with a splat.

"It's snow!" Shujinko exclaimed.

Loki gulped, and looked down at his hands, nervous. They started to shake. His skin didn't turn blue, it was still pale. Almost like Jotunheim's snow.

Liu Kang and Kai both had fire. Kung Lao had his petals. Of course, Loki would have something soulless.

"What's wrong?"

Loki looked up from his hands. It was only then he noticed how hard he was breathing. Shujinko gently grabbed Loki's hands to inspect them.

"What's wrong, Loki?" he asked again.

"I'm- I'm-" he stuttered. He hid his hands behind his back.

"A cryomancer," Shujinko soothed, "They are rare and few, but you can learn. Are you scared of the cold?"

"No!" Loki clenched his fists, "I'm not afraid of anything!"

Shujinko wasn't convinced. "Then what troubles you?"

Loki avoided his eyes, "I thought it was taken away from me." he admitted. He had been hopeful, that being a mortal would take away his Jotun affliction.

Shujinko furrowed his brows in worry, "Lok-"

"Did you have parents?" Loki couldn't help but interrupt, "Why were you named Shujinko?"

"I do not know my parents, Loki. Whether they abandoned me or died for me is left in the past. My abilities, regardless of the fact that I inherited them, are not about them. My abilities centre around me, so I must always use them wisely. It tells you a lot about people, and who your enemies are," he thought to himself, "I do have a parent figure, however. A woman who guided me in my early stages of life. She used to train the White Lotus, but these days she's more peaceful running a restaurant close to the nearest city."

"So, what does being a cryomancer make me?" Loki asked, "There must be a history behind them."

Shujinko rubbed his beard thoughtfully, "Cryomancers share one distinct trait. They are a result of humans coupling with the blue skinned people."

Loki gulped, "Blue skinned?"

"They called themselves Jotuns. During one of my travels back in my youth, I had found these records in Outworld, stolen from Edenia. An Edenian wrote of these blue people who came from another realm. They were blue skinned, red eyed giants, but could easily take an Edenian form. They lived shorter, though. They sought another home, and lived peacefully within the arctic of Edenia. Some of them married into Edenian families, having children who would grow up to be cryomancers. I couldn't find anything else on them, but I theorise that some of them escaped to Earthrealm during Shao Kahn's invasion. They tried their best to keep their traditions alive, but like a lot of cultures, they became lost to time and circumstance."

"So, I'm a..." Loki paused, "Frost giant?"

"Yes," Shujinko chuckled, "You're a frost giant."

Notes:

Loki is trying.

Bo'Rai'Cho is Madame Bo, because she's cooler and not so gross.

Chapter 4: Live and learn

Notes:

Since Shujinko's powers revolve around copying others, I figured he'd try his best to teach Loki a few things. Shujinko is a good guy... who is chaotic, and has made friends with both bad and good people. Outside the things he's done for Onaga, that guy had some serious judge of character issues going around learning from Lin Kuei, literal assassins. Cyrax doesn't have special powers, but in his mk9 win pose, his human version can disappear. I'm going to guess that the reason Lin Kuei get confused for ninjas is that some of them have some ninjutsu related abilities. Anyways, Loki knows ninjutsu slight of hand. Loki isn't officially a monk, which is why he gets away with these things.

Chapter Text

It had been months since Loki was banished. Odin fell into the Odinsleep, and Frigga wouldn't leave his side, which left Thor in charge of protecting Asgard.

Thor was pretty decent in his kingly duties. He distracted himself by going hunting, and jeering with his friends, as he didn't have the patience to sit on the throne all day. There were some duties Thor was able to take seriously, however. He sought advice from Frigga and occasionally Hogun when it came to private meetings. His mother, because where else did Loki learn the verbal skill of soothing. And Hogun, because it was great to have a pair of eyes and ears from an outside perspective. Out of the warriors three, Volstagg and Fandral were the most compassionate, but Hogun didn't really seem to like anyone, which was great for judging character.

In the early stages of Loki's banishment, Thor returned home a little disappointed. Loki was nowhere to be found, whether it be the library or his chambers. And then Thor would remember what transpired. He pretended he was fine with it. Loki had travelled before, so this time it wouldn't be different, surely. Instead of his mother going to greet him, Thor would instead go out of his way to see her. With every adventure she fretted over Loki the most, and now that he was gone, she fretted over no one. Loki was the precious baby, there was no changing that, but for once, Thor had hoped that there would be something for him from her.

As much as Thor loved his mother dearly, Loki and Odin's absence made him realise just how distant they were. They were very close, but she didn't truly understand him. Not like she did Loki. If it had been Loki in Thor's position then Frigga would ask him what was wrong, and try her best to be there for him. Thor was the oldest, so of course he wasn't smothered as much, but it never made sense to him why she never dotted on him as much. Thor wouldn't admit it, but he needed someone he could trust to see him vulnerably.

Once the 8th month came along, Thor had gotten used to Hogun being his adviser completely. Someone to keep him level headed. The last time he had acted brash, Loki was never seen again.

Meanwhile, in Midgard. Kung Lao and Loki were sparring for the upcoming tournament. Lao was determined to be proven worthy, and Loki, with his variety of skills, figured he and Kai switch places in between training. Sometimes they would go against Kung Lao at the same time, anything that would make him more alert.

Today it was just him and Loki, as Kai watched from the sidelines. Loki and Kung Lao exchanged blows, both trying their best to not hold back. The tournament would be nothing but pain, and that was a feeling Lao unfortunately had to become accustomed to.

Kung Lao threw his hat at Loki, who then Loki disappeared in a cloud of smoke, and what replaced him was a snow ball. It blew up in Kung Lao's face, momentarily blinding him.

"You're cheating!" Lao screamed, wiping it off.

Loki reappeared, grinning, twirling an ice dagger. "Keep up, Lao. How will you fare in the tournament if you can't evade my party tricks."

Loki's grin quickly vanished when he was donked on the head by a spinning hat. Lao caught it. "I have a few tricks of my own. Paying attention to my surroundings."

"Hard to do when you're not on enemy territory," he glanced at Kai, "Or just one person watching."

Kai tutted, "You can't have that mentality at the tournament, Loki."

Loki began to rub his head in efforts to numb the pain, "Pardon?"

"The tournament," Kai and Kung Lao shared a look, "We thought you were going."

Loki looked between them, "Aren't you two going? Raiden barely agreed to let Kung Lao enter," He looked at Kung Lao, "I'm still trying to figure out how you convinced him, with Liu Kang being Earthrealm's champion and all. Besides, what's in it for me?"

Kung Lao furrowed his brows, "What's that supposed to mean?"

Loki's honesty (and lies) have landed him in hot water over the centuries, but he hoped this time it would be different.

"Everyone has guessed by now that I'm not from here."

"That doesn't matter-" Kai began.

"I know, but..." Loki paused, finding his words, "I would only do it for the White Lotus. I don't have loyalty to Earthrealm as a whole. I don't care for humans."

Hel, Loki did not care for the royal guards that the Jotun had slain under his guidance

Kai suppressed a snicker, "Never let Raiden hear you say that."

"And isn't Raiden just choosing a select few? He has no reason to trust me. What if I end up betraying him? Failing him?"

"Loki," said Kung Lao, thoughtfully, "The tournament will be on Shang Tsung's island."

"I know. You all told me this. He works for the emperor, Shao Kahn. Are you suggesting I spy on him?"

"If he owns the island, it means he lives there," Kai smiled a suggestive smile. "And what's 10,000 years of knowledge worth? He probably has something on his island. What could it be doing on his island?"

"He might even be hiding information about cryomancers." Lao smirked.

Loki sighed, "You both planned this from the beginning."

Kai sheepishly avoided his eyes, "Only because I can't go. I'm inexperienced, and queasy around blood."

"Right," Loki nodded, "How's that medicine training going for you?"

He grimaced, "I'll stick to making the medicine rather than applying it."

There is a line in the 2nd Thor film that implies that Thor was jealous of Loki and Frigga's relationship, and I kinda wanted to do something with that. Thor misses Loki, but at the same time wishes to use his absence as a moment of clarity.

In the MCU it's never explored or explained why Sif and the warriors 3 don't get along with Loki or why they dislike him before the events of Thor 1 transpired. It's been a long time since I actually watched the film, so my portrayal of the characters will be incredibly inaccurate. I didn't read the comics either. I recall watching a few scenes of them with Loki and somehow I interpreted that Hogun was the most civil, even though I've seen people claim that he despises Loki (I don't know if it's actual fact), and that Fandral is the one who is civil, friendly even.

Look at this formation. Hogun is right next to Loki in both scenes. Loki should be right next to Thor on the far right, but he's in a black haired trio. As we all know the warriors 4 are Thor's friends, not Loki's. And considering Thor sort of invited Loki to join them (if I remember correctly), he should be stuck with Thor. It especially doesn't make sense that Sif is also closer to him considering their history (him cutting her hair, resulting in it turning black or something). Even with the second picture, where Loki is finally next to Thor, Hogun is right next to Loki but well away from the others. If Hogun (and Sif) hates Loki, why would he endure being right next to him?

I grew up thinking Hogun was the smart one, but his friendship with Thor would sometimes blind him from his own intellect. When they end up in Jotunheim he's the one that says "We shouldn't be here." to the others. Loki was the one who made sure they would be rescued should something go wrong, so they're the only ones with a brain cell it seems. It kinda makes me wonder why Hogun hangs out with them besides the warrior thing. He isn't so jolly, or loud, or spunky, or hungry, or even too eager (blood thirsty/prideful). He's observant and is dragged along for the ride, kinda like a certain someone. I think this is the MCU's fault when it came to writing his character, but he's kind of just there.

The warriors 3 and Sif are mostly blank slates to me, which would make them fun to write theoretically. There's a bunch of things I wanna write on him that I haven't seen covered in other Thor & Loki in Asgard fics, so if I end up being dedicated to writing more chapters, hopefully I'm successful. There's a ton of parallels I would like to make, both Thor and Mortal Kombat.

Notes:

I once saw a headcanon (or something along there) that said Loki must've been a spy for Odin whilst juggling being a prince, which I can see happening. The hardly respected 2nd prince that, no one really pays much attention to, listening to the conversations of would be betrayers and reporting them back to Odin. Pretending to like their company, knowing that they would attempt using him to get close to the royal family.

Chapter Text

Loki always figured his black hair came from Frigga's side. He had only visited Vanaheim a few times in his childhood, and over there it was less rare to come across dark haired people. It assured him that he wasn't so different in his family, but then it reinstated how much of an Asgardian man he was. Very little. In his inability to be a copied version of Thor, Loki ended up being exactly like Frigga. Seen and never heard.

Then came Hogun the Grim. Granted, the only reason he and the other warriors knew each other was because they were all from high ranking families, allied with Odin in some fashion. Loki could never understand why, but he figured Hogun tolerated him the least. Lady Sif he understood, being born from a noble family who expected highly from her, and dealing with the scornful men who made it their business to judge and hate anything they were unfamiliar with. Female warriors had a bad reputation due to most of them meeting a tragic fate, much like the Valkyries. Thus, that put her in competition with Prince Loki, who practised the womanly art of seidr. Loki, who relied on cowardly illusions, and tricks. That Loki understood.

Hogun never made any sense to Loki. Surely, they were the same. Black hair, dark clothes, seen and not heard. Interrupting that certainty was Loki's observant ability in recognising rejection. It was the same as Sif's, but for a different reason. The desperation to outshine him so that they wouldn't be ridiculed.

Hogun wanted to belong, a trait Loki couldn't fault him on. He realised Hogun was willing to become an Asgardian if it meant being accepted by them.

Loki became more talkative after that realisation.

There was a time where Sif looked exactly like any other Asgardian woman, before the fiasco that they were both forced to get over, for Thor's sake. Loki couldn't remember what it was about since they fought very often in his childhood, but he was forced to learn a hair growth spell to bring back what she lost. Loki could never figure out how, same for every mage within the 9 realms, but her locks never returned to their golden form.

In some sick twisted sense of familiarity, it made him feel less alone.

To be told what he truly was before being sent to Earth was really a slap in the face. Besides from the stories Loki has been told in his childhood, he didn't know a single thing about Jotun kind. Were the Edenian breeds like the current Jotun? Was the culture different? Would Loki truly find anything bearable on Shang Tsung's island?

"No, Loki. You will not be competing in the tournament." Raiden scolded.

Loki bowed as a reflex, "I don't intend on fighting, Lord Raiden, nor do I wish to be in Liu Kang's way. I merely want to watch on the sidelines, be a healer if I must."

Raiden kept his frown, "If you are seen you will be listed as a participant. Why the sudden interest in this tournament, Loki?" Raiden slightly tilted his head disapprovingly, "You understand that you will be putting your life on the line for the sake of Earthrealm, yes?"

Loki was certainly bluffing. He was a prince trained in daggers, so he certainly had slain warriors. Without magic? No. Loki was confident in his current abilities, but he had no intention of dying.

"I heard that there will be another Cryomancer," said Loki. "I am curious to find out more about my origins. I believe it will help me understand myself better."

"Hmm," Raiden sounded, "I'm assuming the cryomancer you've heard of is Sub-Zero."

Loki began fiddling with his fingers. "I hope so."

"I hope you understand that he will not be a friend. The Lin Kuei have a long history of making ruinous choices. They will not be fighting for Earthrealm this year."

Loki nodded, "I understand, lord Raiden."

Heimdall blinked hard, his golden eyes looking around now that they were out of focus. His grip on his sword became tighter as he began to think about what he just saw.

Would it be unwise to inform Thor? Thor already had a growing war to sort out. On the other hand, Prince Loki was much weaker now that he was in a Midgardian form. Thor would most definitely want to stop Loki from getting himself killed, especially over a realm that didn't concern them. Then again, Prince Loki didn't try hard enough to prevent Thor from stepping into Jotunheim.

Heimdall could admit, and only to himself, that it was finally nice to have Loki unable to avoid his gaze. Loki was just as bloodthirsty as Heimdall suspected him to be. Like a true Asgardian, he wanted to die in battle.

Heimdall never believed in Prince Loki's meek, 'speak only when spoken to' act. Loki was a liar, after all. The Jotun blooded brat thought he was better than everyone else with his reserved nature, and all-knowing attitude. Seeing this side of Loki was interesting. A side where he was forced to rely on others, and in doing so, was at their mercy. Only time would tell if Loki's respect for Raiden was artificial, or if he thought highly of Raiden at all.

In the meantime, Heimdall could only watch.

Notes:

I apologise if the race thing is kinda creepy. I figured with Loki being the odd one out in his family, he would try to desperately find ways where he fit in. To connect. He's already practising seidr, might as well research his cultural background on Frigga's side.

Frigg is associated with both Asgard and Vanaheim in mythology, and I've read fanfics where she's a warbride taken from Vanaheim (again, my knowledge is limited), and I kinda wanted to play around with that. Hogun is from Vanaheim, yet carries a lot of the Asgardian beliefs, like a non-white friend trying to fit into an all white friend group, so I figured I'd experiment.

Thor and Loki are technically considered mix-raised, when you think about it. Loki being the only one with black hair must've easily been passed off as some kind of genetic surprise. There is an Asgardian in the comics that has black hair named Tyr, so it could've easily been a thing where black hair is extremely rare on Asgard, either mutation or distant non-Asgardian ancestor. Pointing out that Asgardians only have light coloured hair is a big thing in this fandom, and I'm not sure if it's canon.

As for Heimdall, I got mixed feelings about the guy. Certainly hates Loki and tried to kill him after Loki fired him. He technically committed treason. At the same time, he watched Loki grow up as an Asgardian, so I think hell be proud that Loki is dying the viking fashion.

Chapter Text

Loki was packing his luggage with the help of Kai. He wouldn't be needing too many things since the tournament would take about a week. He and Kai chatted excitedly.

"I promised to show you every favourite film I have on dvd!" Kai proclaimed. "First, make sure to win for Earthrealm."

"I'm flattered," Loki grinned, "But I think listening to your music machine every night before bed was enough."

Kai sighed, "Loki, if you do die, it's best that you die looking good."

Kai took out a box from under his bed, and he handed it over to Loki.

Loki opened it to look inside. It was two sets of different uniforms. The first one was a soft green traditional Tao suit. On the back was a yellow embroidery of a flower. There was a golden sash to be used as a makeshift belt. The second one was a modernised kung fu uniform, certainly made to attract the superficial eye of a young boy.

"It was Shujinko's idea. He handmade one, and I got mine from the city."

Loki smirked, "You can stitch wounds, but not clothes?"

Kai grinned, "Hey, I'm not an expert with needles."

Loki replayed that conversation in his head as he chewed his food. Next to him on his left sat Kung Lao, and on his right sat Johnny Cage, talking Raiden's ear off. Across from Loki sat Nightwolf, Sonya and Liu Kang.

On the Outworld table table sat a woman dressed in red spandex and a mask, and another wearing purple armour. There was a man with a metal patch on his right eye. A trio of men wearing black with the secondary colour being a primary colour. The Lin Kuei. The blue one, Loki assumed, was Sub-Zero. He could see the cold steam that was coming out of his mask.

Johnny had already defeated Baraka and Reptile, so Loki figured the rest of the Outworld warriors would be two at a time, or more. If the human, Johnny, was able to hold his own against two creatures, then the rest of them possibly could as well. Unless the Lin Kuei killed them all in their sleep.

Loki wasn't the only one watching them.

"I wonder what they're planning." Johnny muttered.

Loki humoured him, "They're gossiping about us."

"Do you have super hearing, or something?"

"No. It might be a cursed wish to have," Loki shivered, "I know from experience."

Johnny sat up in interest, "You don't seem to be a monk. You got this really prim and pearly-ness to you."

Loki chuckled, "Well spotted. I won't be telling you any of my secrets, though."

Johnny looked around the table, "I'm assuming we're all here for different reasons, then? If you're not a monk, what are you?"

Loki thought about the question, "I'm not human, I'll give you that."

Johnny was being serious, "Does that mean you're an alien?"

"It's a surprise."

"Do you have any alien secrets?"

"Only words of wisdom."

Johnny waited. Loki rose a brow.

"Use people's judgement of you to your advantage. And you, son of Cage, have the scent of a pretender," Loki did a vague gesture, "No one will see you coming."

Notes:

Before anyone says anything, Loki had to deal with Thor, Fandral and Volstagg. Johnny is the least bit problematic. I'm not gonna directly say these two would be friends, but I think they would get along.

"Prince Helblindi requests a meeting," Thor told Frigga, "What would be the best course of action?"

"Would it be a problem to hear his side?" Frigga asked. "It's Prince Helblindi, not King Laufey."

Frigga had her back turned to Thor as she tended to Odin. Thor bristled slightly.

"I believe you should speak with Prince Helblindi. In a private place with guards to make sure nothing goes wrong." said Frigga.

Thor raised his head up, "I will know wicked intent once I see it myself, mother."

"You also need to be well protected, Thor. Which of your friends will put their life on the line for you if the prince makes a move to touch you? I don't believe Volstagg would want to relive that exchange."

Thor huffed.

Frigga was not impressed, "Do not have that attitude with me. You have an opportunity to put an end to this, now take advantage of that. The prince might have good intentions."

"What would you have told Loki?"

She sighed, "Loki has nothing to do with this."

"No, but he started this," He insisted, almost interrupting her. "If he didn't interrupt my coronation then none of this would have happened."

Frigga didn't react, at least, not in the way Thor was hoping.

"Share your true feelings, Thor." she commanded.

He predictably didn't compose himself.

"What does Loki have that I haven't? You give so much leeway to your precious son-"

"What is this leeway, Thor?"

"Is it the fact that he always knows what to do? You showed him how to do all that, why can't you show me?"

She looked tired. "Your father tried to teach you, but you had never been interested. It was expected that you would learn by yourself, through experience."

"He's destined to overthrow me, isn't he," Thor stated, "Even if he isn't, I'm still going to forever look ridiculous to all of Asgard."

"You'll look ridiculous if you don't sort out this mess," Frigga corrected. "You want me to hold your hand and tell you what to do? Fine. But notice how this stops you from learning anything. You've never truly been independent. Always relying on others to do the important work for you, even now. You come to me for advice, and when I'm not enough you go running to that friend of yours."

Thor kept still, refusing to respond. His growing anger couldn't be denied, as it was still clear on his face. Frigga had become an unmovable force towards that anger.

"Always using people, Thor," she scolded him, disappointed. "Doing all of that will reduce the chances of Loki ever coming back. That's what you really care about, isn't it? This jealous act isn't working, but at least you've become a good liar."

Meanwhile. As Thor was occupied, the warriors four were waiting in the throne room. There was an air of uncertainty. Sif had begun to pace, and Fandral and Volstagg were discussing unimportant things to busy themselves. Hogun watched them silently as usual, joining in occasionally. Then suddenly, in what felt like hours, the conversion turned personal.

"Do you think Thor will do it?" asked Volstagg, "What if this makes things worse? A meeting with a Jotun prince? Nothing can be good of that."

"We should have faith in Thor," said Fandral, ever the optimist. "If something does go wrong he has us to assist him. Remember, this is the first war Thor has ever led, so he needs to keep his enemies close in order to figure out the best strategy."

"This is all Loki's fault," Sif hissed, "If there's an enemy to keep close, it's him. Thor's dedication proves that he was wrong."

She would never admit it, but Sif was obsessed with Loki. Hogun had noticed this pattern of behaviour over the centuries. No matter what, she found a reason to bring him up. Loki was many things, a lying, mischievous young boy that Thor insisted on having attached to his hip. Most importantly, Loki was valuable, but she denied it the most.

"Loki is a traitor to Asgard," Hogun agreed, choosing his next words carefully. "He's being punished as we speak, and he isn't our concern right now. We cannot continue giving him attention."

Sif perked, "Hogun, you've been allowed in the council meetings. Can you share anything with us that Thor hasn't?"

As silent and civilised as they were, the people of Vanaheim were great talkers. Great listeners. All the things that Thor wasn't, as it had become present to Hogun these past months. If it wasn't the listening part that Thor struggled with, it was the understanding.

"Thor isn't his usual self. He worries for the safety of Asgard should he fail. This worry of his has been a burden to him, and one he must overcome on his own."

Sif moved, "Then we should-"

"It's best we leave him to his own thoughts," Hogun said firmly. "This is his chance to lead us to victory as king. It would be a shame to take that away from him by soiling his thoughts and plans with our opinions."

Sif was stunned into silence. She became interested in the floor, most likely wishing she could come up with a retort that revolved around imposing themselves into royal matters. But with no wit, she couldn't find any.

Chapter Text

Sonya had successfully snapped Kano's neck with her legs. No weapon needed. For Loki it was rare to witness a warrior use their bare hands to slay an enemy, more so a human.

"Sonya Blade wins!" Shang Tsung declared, as he stood up from his seat. Princess Kitana stood next to him, observing the other fighters. She too, for whatever reason, wore a mask.

Shang Tsung stretched his hand out, and they all watched as a green ball of light left Kano's body. Shang Tsung took it, engulfing it. Kano's body became a shrivelled mess.

Loki had heard of soul magic, but he didn't want to comprehend the idea of it being real. Taking power from souls, leaving the person who died to remain restless and unable to pass on sounded inhumane.

Here it was, in front of him. Shang Tsung taking what was left out of the fallen warrior.

In another time, Loki could see them both being friends. He was glad that time had never come.

"Hiding behind your magic is cowardly." Hogun's voice rang in Loki's head. Maybe this was why it was looked down upon, because of users like Shang Tsung.

The sorcerer must've sensed his thoughts, because he turned his head to Loki. Loki didn't show anything on his face, but Shang saw right through it.

"The next fighter is Loki!" Shang Tsung smirked, "Your opponent is... Skarlet!"

Loki locked eyes with the red lady he had seen the night before. They both made their way to the middle of the courtyard. Loki glanced to the side at Kung Lao, who gave him a thumbs up. Loki sent him a nod.

"Afraid, Loki?" Skarlet preened, her mask hiding her grin.

He didn't respond, instead getting into position. She followed suit. They stared each other down.

"Round one!" Shang Tsung shouted, "Fight!"

Loki threw an ice dagger, which stabbed her shoulder. She ripped it out, unimpressed. Loki ran towards her, summoning his spear. He swung at her, she retaliated by whipping his face with an octopus leg that she summoned, except they were made out of some kind of substance that smelled suspiciously like blood.

Loki recovered, using his staff to spin around and kick her away. She landed on the floor with a thud.

Shang Tsung frowned, "Round two! Fight!" he bellowed.

Skarlet got up from the floor.

"Who taught you your tricks?" he asked her, wiping blood off his mouth.

She smirked confidently, "Shao Kahn blessed me with the gift of blood magic. Cut me, and I'll only grow stronger."

"Oh," Loki raised a brow, "Is that how it works?"

They continued exchanging blows. Loki was only able to land a few grazes on her skin. He switched to using his ice midway, but her 10,000 years of living outweighed his 1000. He teleported midair, but she predicted it. She grabbed him by his neck, and curiously began sniffing him with an innocent sigh.

"You don't have the blood of an Earthrealmer," she mused. "What makes you special?"

Loki glanced at her shoulder, the spot he had stabbed previously. There was still a bit of ice in there.

"I plan before I act."

Skarlet's arm jerked, and in a struck of sudden pain, she let go of Loki. Her arm froze as ice seeped through, spreading onto her chest, and to the rest of her body. She struggled, but soon became immovable. Her eyes stuck in a frozen trance of frustration, disbelief, and tiny panic.

"Finish her!"

Loki glanced at Shang Tsung. He then looked at princess Kitana, who, judging by her keen eyes, was looking forward to whatever he was possibly about to do next.

Loki tapped Skarlet's shoulder, contemplating. Teasing his time. Unlike his barbaric peers, he wasn't one for savagery.

"I won't kill her!"

He walked off the mat, and made his way to where he had been standing next to Kung Lao right by the other Earthrealmers.

Liu Kang was impressed, "When you said your powers were improving I didn't think you meant this."

Johnny glanced over his shoulder, "You froze her to death?"

Kung Lao grinned, "I don't think she's dead."

"Shao Kahn's fighters are expected to withstand any challenge. The same goes for his daughters." said Raiden, with a solemn expression and tone.

Loki frowned, "She's Shao Kahn's daughter? Shouldn't she be in the final match? Why would Shang Tsung make her go against me? Especially so soon?"

They watched as Skarlet was picked up and carried away by Shang's servants.

"Skarlet is Shao Kahn's rare example in sowing a good seed," Raiden continued, "But with far more evil intentions. Skarlet has no significance to the throne, but she is favoured by him. I suspect she was set against you to test your abilities."

"The next fight will be Li Mei, vs Nightwolf!" Shang Tsung declared.

Chapter 9: Helblindi

Notes:

Here comes Helblindi.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The meeting room was surrounded by Einherjar. A handful of them especially stood cautiously behind Hogun, who stood behind Thor. They both tensed as the doors opened to allow the Frost giant prince to squeeze through the door. Prince Helblindi was accompanied by another Jotun (bodyguard?) and some guards.

Each step they made was like an echoing thud.

They halted, suddenly. Thor waited. He, Hogun and the guards watched as Helblindi and his company became smaller in size, small enough to be human. They were still very tall.

Prince Helblindi had long black hair, youthful red eyes, and sharp features. He wore good quality fur, not that Thor knew what kind.

Thor gestured Helblindi to sit, who went to find a seat.

"It's very gracious of you to listen to my ramblings for an hour or so, Prince Thor. You've made quite the reputation of yourself," Helblindi mocked as he sat down. "Before we discuss anything, I would just like to get our manners out of the way."

Thor was amused, "Really?"

"Yes. We're both aware that we don't have the best opinions of each other. You think we're barbarians, and we think the same of your kind," Helblindi's tone became more serious, "The Asgardians who steal livestock, jewellery and burn down homes. Murder our children. Pollute everything they touch. Sound familiar?"

Thor glared at him, "Jotuns eat children. Rip cattle with their bare hands, and stomp on cities."

Helblindi nodded. There was a moment of silence as the two studied the other. Thor felt a shift in the room. A moment of understanding.

Helblindi put his hands together, "Let's talk prince to prince, or king." his tone returned to being humorous.

"What is it that you'd like to discuss?"

Helblindi pretended to think to himself, "If I'm correct, you have a brother. Prince Loki."

Thor's expression didn't change. "Yes. He's not here at the moment. He travels too often for his own good."

"I see," Helblindi wondered, seemingly convinced. "You made quite the impression on your little visit. So much so that the soldiers gossiped about what happened. I'm too nosy for my own good, and I listened to every word. You see, one of the soldiers said something along the lines of touching Loki's skin. He wasn't harmed, but he did turn very blue."

Behind Thor, Hogun stiffened, his eyebrows pointing down. He remembered that night all too well, but everyone was caught up in their own chaos, and the blue of the environment didn't help. If it wasn't for that chaos, he would've noticed that.

Thor stared at Helblindi, the gears in his head turning as he understood what Helblindi was insinuating.

"Are you sure it was Loki?"

"How many princes of Asgard with black hair are there?" Helblindi glanced at Hogun, "Unless it was him. Or the girl. How many of you were wearing green that night?"

Thor rubbed his chin, "Loki can shapeshift, and he is a powerful user of magic, but he is not one of you." he said calmly.

"Alright, he could be Kree," Helblindi shrugged, "Let's say, theoretically, Loki was one of us. The soldier spoke of markings that looked mysteriously like mine. I assumed Prince Loki found out on his own, and attempted to usurp the throne for himself. That's quite normal within my family, so Laufey's death is doomed to come by either my hand, or my brother's."

Thor frowned, Helblindi smirked.

"Not everyone can have a golden family like yours, Odinson" he said without malice, "Jotunheim has always had problems, even before the war with your realm."

"How do any of you get by?"

"Despair and resolve. Or, we find places. Make a living." Helblindi smiled.

"But what do you want with me?"

"Do you have the desire to slay my father or not?"

"Wouldn't you want to fight for your realm?" Thor asked in disbelief, "What about the casket? Some Jotuns tried to retrieve it, that's how the tension started."

The frost prince rolled his eyes bored-ly, "There isn't really anything to fight for. Even with the casket of ancient winters, Jotunheim is a land only for survivors. Besides, I'm not an old man, and I'm not going to die over something that happened between my father and yours."

"You want me to kill your father."

"With a deal, of course. I know you Asgardians like your agreements. After you kill Laufey, I or someone else becomes king, and then you leave us alone. No more petty attacks, and no more speaking ill of each other. A true treaty," he made a gesture, "Give me a thumbs up to seal the deal."

Hogun looked between them.

Asgardians are all talk, no ears.

Jotuns have no loyalty.

Notes:

According to the original Thor script, Laufey did in fact abandon Loki, and with the whole cryomancers being descended from frost giants thing, I figured I'd be creative about it.

The war with Asgard and Jotunheim was 1000s of years ago. Outworld invaded and merged with Edenia 10,000 years ago, judging by how old Kitana is. Since I wanted the timelines to be accurate, I decided that the Jotuns aren't a very nice race of people, or at least, the rulers aren't. Jotunheim wasn't really a nice place even 10,000 years before a bunch of stuff happened.

And yes, I made Helblindi a bit edgy and sarcastic. He's like a Ragnarok loki.

Chapter 10: Skarlet

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Loki made quiet footsteps as he walked through the pathway. Shang Tsung's island was big, and he had to be quick if he wanted to find even the smallest bit of information. He had left in the middle of Johnny's fight against Cyrax, hoping everyone would be distracted enough to either ignore or forget about him.

Unfortunately, he wasn't back at the palace. Even worse, chances are, he was being followed right now.

Loki contemplated how he should handle it. If he was brash, he was sure to be underestimated.

"Come forward." he commanded.

In front of him appeared a puddle of red blood. Skarlet appeared, unfrozen, and her eyes set only on him.

"Hello, Skarlet," he greeted, "I hope you've recovered well."

Although her mask hid her expression, her frustration was clear in her voice. "Sparing my life doesn't gain my loyalty, Earthrealmer."

"As flattered as I am, I didn't spare your life to gain your trust," Loki began to smirk, "But if you're so insistent on owing me, I humbly request that you allow me to explore Shang Tsung's island."

She summoned a knife, Loki sighed at her. He didn't want to have to kill anyone, but he still had lots of ice to spare.

"In my opinion, I'm not asking for too much. You asked me what made me special, I'm trying to find out. Shang Tsung might have that information hiding here somewhere."

"You're going the wrong direction," she looked to her left, "The krypt is that way. You have 20 minutes until I take your life."

That was all the indication Loki needed. He bowed respectfully at her. "Thank you, Princess Skarlet."

She stiffened, "Princess?"

"You are the emperor's daughter, yes? It would only make sense to address you by your title." with that, Loki walked away.

Skarlet furrowed her brows as she thought about the title he had thrown at her. Princess? She didn't have royal blood.

After a good 5 minutes of running, Loki managed to find the krypt Skarlet mentioned. It was a strange place to store artefacts and treasure, but it was the least obvious place anyone would look for info on creatures and species of different realms.

Unfortunately, Loki didn't find much on the Jotnar. He found some useful ice techniques, ceremonial practises and old names, but that was it. It could be argued that it was useful, but Loki didn't know what to do with them. Who he could share them with. His mind created the image of the blue Lin Kuei assassin.

Would it be worth it? To approach him?

Skarlet made it back to the courtyard in time to see Sektor going against Kung Lao. Cyrax must've beaten Johnny Cage, who was miraculously still alive, rubbing his wounds as he sat on the ground.

Shang Tsung did not look pleased, more so now that he's noticed her. Skarlet averted her eyes, hoping that Loki wouldn't appear. He had 3 minutes left.

Notes:

Yeah. Sorry, I couldn't think of anything else. I was gonna write Mileena, but since she's the youngest child, I figured she wouldn't be present at the tournament.

Chapter 11: Cyrax

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Loki walked through the island paths. The more he explored the place, the more he regretted it. There was always one or two odd things he would stumble upon that weren't pretty to look at, like a wild animal Baraka had most certainly taken apart. He paid attention to his surroundings, and not once did he feel followed.

He did stop once he heard a quiet argument. Loki quickly hid and listened. He recognised the voices to be Sektor and Cyrax. It was almost perfect. He could approach them instead of Sub-Zero, assuming the blue clad assassin had the role of leader.

"You were commanded to kill Johnny Cage, you disobeyed."

"I eliminated him from the tournament, he didn't need to die."

"You have broken your oath!"

"I used my judgement!"

"The cyber initiative will eliminate insubordination!"

"We're not machines, Sektor. I chose to serve the Lin Kuei, but I will not surrender my free will!

And then they both started exchanging blows.

Loki frowned from where he hid. Not a good idea at all. What was the cyber initiative? Loki had spent a long enough time on Midgard to understand most of the technology, but no one in the White Lotus really used mobile devices and the like, except for Kai. And only then, it was minimal electronics like his music player. Nothing that could cause too much distraction.

He heard the painful kick delivered to Sektor's face, knocking him out completely.

Loki stepped out of the darkness. "I don't understand why he's so upset. Wasn't it him that lost to Kung Lao?" he said haughtily.

"Loki!" Although he had his weapons drawn, Cyrax didn't attack immediately. "What are you doing here?" he asked sternly, staring at Loki with distrust.

For an assassin, he seemed... nice? Not the right word, but cooperative wasn't at the top of Loki's head either.

"I was wondering if I could speak to Sub-Zero," Loki confessed, "But I see now is not the right time to have these inquiries."

"What's in it for me?"

"Nothing," Loki admitted, "I had thought even assassins would have the common courtesy to make at least one act of kindness for a stranger," he put his hands up in a surrender motion. "I was being naive. I will leave you alone."

Loki made his retreat, and Cyrax watched with an inner turmoil.

"Wait!" Cyrax shouted, Loki turned to him. "I will bring you to Sub-Zero, but you must give me something in return."

Loki tilted his head uncomfortably, "If it's something I can do, then yes. What would you like in return?"

"I want protection," Loki's eyes widened, Cyrax breathed hard, hiding how infuriated he was. "It is already vulnerable enough to bring you to Sub-Zero, so I am willing to share a more personal side for this price. My fellow Lin Kuei will be coming after me, and I need one or more people to keep them at bay. Can you do that?"

"Raiden will surely take you in. I'm certain the White Lotus is the last place anyone would look. We'll have to do something about him," Loki pointed at Sektor, "I don't suggest hurting him, but disabling him. Removing his weapons? He'll be less likely to come after you soon."

Cyrax straightened up, shaking off his wounds. "I'll do it."

Kitana and Skarlet sat in their shared room. Well, it was Kitana's room, but Skarlet did not want to be confronted by Shang Tsung, and it was unlike the sorcerer to enter the Princess's room, much less knock.

They sat in silence. Skarlet stared at the wall, while Kitana fanned herself. The weather was nice, but there was little to nothing to do. Kitana  couldn't take the silence anymore.

"Shang Tsung is worried about you, Skarlet."

Skarlet rolled her eyes, "Of course he is, he's my teacher."

Kitana kept in a sigh, "He thinks you're going soft."

Skarlet refused to say anything else.

"What is the Earthrealmer doing, then?" Kitana asked, "You've recovered, yet you haven't gone after him. He shouldn't be alive."

"Neither should Johnny Cage," Skarlet tried to protest, "There has been less bloodshed in this tournament, but it is no fault of mine. Cyrax refused to kill Cage, and Li Mei-"

"Li Mei is bedding that Shaolin," Kitana chuckled, "Are you bedding Loki, Skarlet? Father would be upset if that's the case."

"No," Skarlet angrily said, "It's just that he's a greater threat than I anticipated. I will assassinate him tonight, while he rests."

The Lin Kuei shared a bedroom, just like the monks, Johnny and Nightwolf. Sektor wasn't present for personal matters. In the room it was just Loki, Cyrax and Sub-Zero. Risky move on his part.

Sub-Zero looked between them. Cyrax averted his gaze, irritated. Loki didn't show any emotion, and he knew appearing small wouldn't help in his favour.

"I was wondering if I could have some time to talk," The blue clad Lin Kuei sized him up in suspicion, "A minute would suffice." he said quickly.

"What would a monk want to possibly talk about with me?"

"Do you know anything about the Frost Giants?"

Sub-Zero let out a chuckle, "Frost Giants?"

"The Jotnar," Loki tried again, "It's the reason we're cryomancers. They are a race descended from Edenia, and some of them came to Earthrealm a few odd ten thousand years ago," A rolled up parchment appeared in Loki's hand out of a gust of smoke. The one with traditions. Cyrax pretended not to be curious. "I was wondering if you knew anything about these."

Sub-Zero took the paper, and inspected it with little interest. "No. These traditions never travelled with us." he handed the parchment back to Loki.

"Do you know any others?" He asked, hoping not to find disappointment so soon.

Sub-Zero quietly inspected him. "Only one." he said. There was little warmth in his eyes, but there wasn't any malice, nor was there any dishonesty.

Notes:

I tried to write Cyrax as accurately as possible. I really love human Cyrax, even though he only appeared for around 6 minutes in the mk9 story mode. I don't mind the female one, but I miss our underrated sexy black boy.

Yes, Loki is still using race as a means to connect with someone. I'm probably projecting my childhood insecurities in him, so sorry about that. Considering the whole growing up in Asgard, and being mocked for his seidr, I figured he'd try to find common ground with other cryomancers.

Chapter Text

What would Loki do?

Thor had this question run through his mind for what felt like hours as he sat in the meeting room. Loki was great with words. Thor could remember the many times people sneered at Loki during a conflict, only for them to be lulled into an agreement. Thor could never understand how Loki always knew what to say. How he always knew how to operate.

"Is having a bodyguard necessary?" Thor looked up to see Fandral, who grinned at him, both reassuring and teasing. "I'd have thought the brave Thor wouldn't need anyone watching his back."

"I decided it would be great to be cautious," Thor tried to be humorous, "Laufey may be out of his realm, but he still has an advantage. Just like his son, he will be accompanied by someone. If something happens, Volstagg will recognise a signal."

Fandral glanced at the casket of ancient winters, "Will you really give him the casket?"

"I think telling you the truth will ruin the plan. No offence."

"None taken."

Loki and Cyrax entered the shared men's bedroom. Nightwolf was attempting to teach Johnny how to use the green energy. Liu Kang was meditating. Kung Lao was reading a comic, most likely borrowed from Kai. They all, except Liu Kang, looked up at the sound of the door opening.

"Loki," Johnny bravely walked up to him, "What's Sunshine doing here?"

Loki contained his nervousness, "I need to protect him from cyberisation."

Johnny glanced at Cyrax before leaning towards Loki to whisper. "And you brought him to us?"

"We made a deal. The Lin Kuei will be going after him, so he'll be under our protection."

Judging by their expressions, that was not a pleasant idea, nor was it one they wanted to deal with.

Nightwolf, "I assume Raiden doesn't know about this deal? Knowing his kind, you're paying a high price for something small." he said this while looking directly at Cyrax.

"Besides," said Kung Lao, "What if something happens to you? We still have the tournament to deal with."

"I'll look after him for you!" Johnny exclaimed, ever so kind. "He sleeps on the floor, though."

Laufey entered the meeting room, carrying the cold of Jotenheim with him. Thor was right to believe Laufey would be accompanied. Thor was smart to have Fandral with him. Sif was hiding, waiting for something to possibly go wrong. Thor had been relying on Hogun for too long, so he dismissed him for the day.

Now that Thor had a clear view of Laufey's face, rid of the mist and gloomy evening sky, he saw a face he didn't think he'd ever see on another person. He saw Loki. It was Loki's face, but older by a few hundred centuries.

Laufey's red eyes were hostile, and unkind. "You wanted to meet, Odinson."

"Good evening, King Laufey." Thor greeted him, "I am willing to give you the casket in exchange of you cancelling this war." Thor was tempted to hide his face in embarrassment of how blunt he was.

"The audacity!" Laufey scoffed, "You come to my home, kill my people, and at the slightest bit of a war, you dangle the heart of my kingdom in front of my face!"

Thor remained passive, "Deal or no deal, Laufey. You're in my realm, and I don't think the warmth is welcoming to your kind."

Laufey tilted his head to the side. "Odin did not teach you how to make his enemies submit, did he?" he began to grin wickedly, "Never mind. I can still kill you, Odinson."

Of course it was doomed to go wrong. Talking was never Thor's gift.

In a blink, everyone seemed to move at once. Fandral and Thor traded blows back to back with the Jotun king's bodyguards.

The Jotnar all fought with summoned ice. Ice knives, swords and shields. No matter how much ice they were able to break into, each newly formed one was tougher to break.

Laufey watched them at first, when he seemed to pick up on something. He sniffed, and turned around to grab Sif by the throat, throwing her into the Einherjar who had charged into the room. Thor didn't even realise that Fandral had made the signal.

He switched to attacking Laufey, as the guards went to attack the Jotun bodyguard. Laufey met every blow as if they were nothing. Even lightning didn't seem to harm him. Thor could feel himself get frustrated with each swing he made, and Laufey chuckled.

"What's wrong, little princess?" Laufey taunted. "Mjolnir turned to stone."

Suddenly, a mace appeared out of nowhere, flying towards them. Laufey caught it easily, looking at it as if it were a bothersome insect. This distracted allowed Thor to slam his hammer down Laufey's foot. Laufey howled, out of surprise, pain and anger. He dropped the mace. Sif, miraculously fine, threw her sword. It lodged into Laufey's neck, who ripped it out. Purple blood sprayed out of it. Hogun grabbed his mace, and slammed it into Laufey's foot. This time, Laufey's scream was of true pain.

Thor caught his breath, shocked. "What are you doing here, friend?"

"I had the impression something would happen if I didn't watch your back for you," Hogun maybe teased, in a rare bit of humour. "Perhaps we should pin him down."

Fandral and Volstagg were already on it. Attacking Laufey's hands, each. Thor charged Mjolnir forward, hitting Laufey's chest, sending him down to the floor. And then electrocuting him with all his might. The screams were unfathomable, and the other Jotuns paused at the sound of their kings cries.

Thor called Mjolnir back to his hand, and he raised the hammer. He stared down at Laufey, ready. Only, he couldn't give himself the desire to bash Mjolnir into the Jotnar's skull.

In fact, Thor had lost the desire completely. It was Loki's face.

"Sif," Thor called, "You do it."

He stood up, and placed his foot on Laufey's chest. He looked away.

"Pardon?" she asked.

"I'm giving the honour to you. Think of it as a gift from your king."

She furrowed her brows, confused, "Didn't you-"

"Thor doesn't wish to soil his hands, Sif," Hogun spoke for him "The honour is yours."

Sif grabbed her sword and made way to Laufey's neck. He snarled at her. With one swish and hard slice, Laufey was beheaded.

Notes:

I don't believe for one bit that Thor was oblivious to how the warriors 4 viewed Loki. He didn't fix the tension between them because it benefited him. I think he always knew, but ignored it (because of what I just stated). I headcanon that Thor inherited Odin's manipulative tendencies. He may not be diplomatic, but he can use his charisma in other ways.

Adviser - Hogun, Enforcer - Volstagg, Bodyguard - Fandral, Assassin - Sif

Chapter Text

Skarlet could remember the taste and smell of Loki's blood. It was similar to Sub-Zero's, but stronger. Sub-Zero was sugar, Loki was the sugarcane. Loki was the source. It wouldn't be worth killing something so rare, but she had no choice but to go through with it, as she said she would. Getting into the bedroom was all too easy, but it seems she had gotten into a bit of a problem. She found herself stuck in some kind of net, made out of green magic. Instead of it being spiritual, it felt electric. She couldn't explain it.

Earthrealm magic was always so complicated. What was even more humiliating was being stared at by Earthrealm warriors. Cyrax, who had originally been hired by Shang Tsung, held a stony expression as Loki spoke to them.

"She's been here since last night?"

"Tried to kill you while you were sleeping," Cyrax sneered, "Who's protecting who here?"

Kung Lao held up his hand, "All of us?"

That soured Cyrax's mood even more, "All of you aren't doing a very good job, then."

"Look, Sunshine, we're all under a lot of stress, and a lot of us are busy," Johnny started gesturing to everyone, "Lao here was doing Li Mei, I was training with Wolfie-"

"That doesn't explain Loki's inability to protect himself."

"He was up all night being on the look out for you and Lao, the dude's exhausted."

Loki placed a hand on Johnny's shoulder, and kept his head down. "Please forgive me, Cyrax. To uphold my end of the bargain, I will forfeit the tournament."

Liu Kang furrowed his brows at everyone, "That is not necessary, Loki. You never told us, what was this agreement about?"

"I wanted to speak with Sub-Zero about his ancestry. I was raised in Asgard, but I come from Jotunheim. I grew up not knowing this, and ever since I've been sent to Earthrealm I've been curious about my origins ever since. Raiden knows I wanted to attend the tournament just to meet him."

Johnny scratched his head, "Sorry, Asgard? Like viking mythology?"

"Yes.

"Is it true that you gave birth to-"

"Story for another time," Loki grimaced, embarrassed, "Anyways, I suspect that a lot of cryomancers are descended from Jotuns, since a handful of them have travelled across realms in the last ten thousand years or so."

"You hate standing out," said Nightwolf, "You want to find a connection."

"That's one way to put it. I've always wanted to honour the cultures of my parents, but now, I fear I may not be able to find one."

"Why can't you just appreciate the one you have?" asked Cyrax "You grew up in Asgard, correct? Your DNA doesn't change the fact that you're from there."

"Asgardians don't like me. They are battle hungry, and I'm a disappointment for not being the same."

"Cultures, plural?" asked Kung Lao.

"My mother is Vanir."

"Then be Vanir," Johnny put a thumbs up, "Unless there's a problem with that too."

Loki blinked. He hadn't considered that. Yes, he'd tried connecting with that side, but he had neglected it, trying to make Odin proud. Now that he thought about it, the clothes he wore were Vanaheim adjacent. The uniform Shujinko made for him.

"I will be Vanir, then."

Shang Tsung glared at Loki with upmost hate. Loki wasn't new to gazes like these, but he had to question what he could've possibly done this time to garner it.

"He believes you have killed Skarlet," said Raiden, seemingly reading his mind. "Be careful around him."

"First match will be Loki versus Sub-Zero!"

Sub-Zero swiftly made his way to the mat, and Loki hesitantly followed.

If an inexperienced cryomancer went against a cryomancer who breathed and lived ice, it wouldn't end in a draw. That's what Loki knew as he fought for his life. All his attacks and defences were useless in comparison to the blue clad assassin's. His tricks were decent, but he only got in a few stabs, which Sub-Zero clearly wasn't new to.

The fight ended quickly with Loki being pinned to the floor by his neck. Sub-Zero began squeezing his neck, staring into his eyes. Loki touched the wrist, hoping to bring the frost bite that had harmed Volstagg. But unlike him, Sub-Zero was made out of ice. If anything, that pissed him off, and Loki felt his neck being crushed. He closed his eyes and went still.

After a good minute, the grip disappeared, and Loki felt himself being removed from the mat with gentle hands.

He kept his eyes closed. He soon felt himself being placed on something soft.

"You can stop faking now, Loki."

Loki opened his eyes to see Raiden, Johnny and Cyrax.

Johnny whistled, "Subs out there really went easy on you."

Cyrax snorted, "You should be glad, Bi Han has done worse."

"I am," Loki glanced at Raiden, "I'm assuming one of you is not at peace of mind."

Raiden's face was mostly neutral, but there was still a bit of disappointment in them. "I must wonder why you would risk making deals on the White Lotus' behalf."

"Only on my behalf," Loki started.

"Behind my back," Raiden became louder, "What if something happened to you? What if they took their chance and had you disposed?"

"I'm right here," Cyrax protested. "Lin Kuei honour their deals."

"Yet, you betray your own realm. I expect better, even from an assassin," Raiden turned back to Loki, "I heard you purposefully lost to protect him full time."

"That was the plan at first, but then I tried to win for real."

"You would go to such lengths for a deal, just to protect one assassin," Raiden turned to Cyrax, "Count yourself lucky, Cyrax. If it were anyone else protecting you, they might not be so dedicated."

Raiden left the room. They watched him walk out. Loki sat up.

"I guess he's not upset anymore." Johnny jerked his head.

Notes:

Yes. Loki made a deal and didn't tell Raiden about it.

I did some research on Vanaheim, and I decided it's a mix of Mongolia and Russia to make sense of the whole white and Asian population, even though race doesn't seem to matter when it comes to aliens. Frigga doesn't look like she's from Vanaheim because she's Odin's wife, which means she has to dress like it. Russian is also a language that is spoken in Mongolia, at least with the older generation.

Chapter 14: Lady Sif

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Sif has always been a tricky case in Thor's list of friends. Frigga hid her disdain for the girl. Odin didn't have much of an opinion on her at all.

Thor himself had recognised her value. She was loyal to him to the point where she was mindless. A puppet. It was a mean opinion to have, but it was Thor's most honest one.

She and Loki didn't get along, and only put up with each other for his sake. He had always appreciated Loki's ability to be civil with her, even though he had the conviction not to. Loki was merciful, and Sif, for whatever reason, could not comprehend that. Thor had learned to dismiss many accusations she made towards Loki in his head, only using their brotherly bond to defend Loki in hopes to deter her from doing anything drastic.

He also knew that she had her sight set on Loki. Thor didn't understand it, for she didn't love Loki nor did she have any loyalty to him either. Yet he couldn't deny there was something

He almost understood it with the mission he gave her. Kill Laufey. For whatever reason, Thor knew she would be eager to accomplish it, and her loyalty to him had little to do with it. Ever since she done it, she hasn't looked at her sword the same way.

One day, while they were training, Thor observed her. Paying more attention to her than everyone else. Hoping to find something off. Sif was refusing to train with her sword, and playfully threatening Fandral who tried to inspect it.

"Are you thinking of getting a new one?" Hogun asked, "Now that it's stained with Laufey's blood?"

"Only to protect this one," she told him, "This sword has become priceless."

Hogun's face was unreadable as always, but Thor knew that he was suspicious. "I hope your new sword catches your fancy, Sif."

"Hogun!" Thor exclaimed, "It's been a while since we sparred, just us two." he held up Mjolnir challengingly.

The men began trading blows like boys eager to become men. It was a childish, friendly spar.

"Something on your mind, Thor?" Hogun asked quietly, so that only Thor could hear.

Thor's cheery facade dropped for a second, "You got me there!" he flipped Mjolnir to his less dominant arm, and quietly said, "I'm starting to believe Prince Helblindi is right," Thor admitted, begrudgingly. "You're the only one who knows about Loki's skin turning blue, besides from the guards who were with us that day."

"What do you think shall be done about it?"

"Nothing. I will ask my mother about it, but Loki is still Loki. What I'm most worried about is what would happen if everyone else finds out. Sif most of all."

Hogun peaked a glance at Sif. She and Fandral were testing their skills against Volstagg.

"Yes, I can see how she would be a problem," he admitted. "She's never gotten over the hair incident."

Sif would be the first to turn against Loki completely, and would use the sacred knowledge of Loki's bloodline in hopes to turn Thor against him. It would only cause more problems, as Thor would never do anything of the sort to Loki. Out of every conflict she and Loki had, she was lucky the Allfather wasn't biased enough to take her head. She was lucky Loki never asked him to.

"I'm going to need them all to get over a lot of things," Thor continued, blocking a predictable swing, "Hogun, I do not mean to burden anymore, but I need you to keep a close eye on them, and report back to me."

"I understand, your highness."

Thor smirked, "You've been awfully humorous these past weeks."

Notes:

The fandom makes Sif out to be hateful of Loki, which I believe, because the way she looked at Loki in Thor (2011) when she and the warriors 3 are in the throne room is insufferable. I decided to make her obsessed, because it makes sense to me. The way she feels entitled to speak to him a kind of way and make demands even though she knows he's king is kind of psychotic in my opinion. The self awareness is not in the room with us. It makes me think of a stalker who doesn't want to admit that they're a stalker. Unfortunately, her behaviour is enabled.

I can't help but have so many questions about the warriors 4. Like, are they all friends with each other, or just friends with Thor? Everything they live and breathe revolves around Thor, and I gotta wonder if they secretly put up with each other because of Thor, you know? Their personalities are so different, and while I understand that most friend groups are like that, but with Lady Sif and the Warriors 3? I can't help but think they clash a little. (Especially if their personality revolves around one trait).

There's also this deleted scene from the first film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_2YW6bXWeQ
It's like they can barely stand each other.

Hogun doesn't call out or further address Sif's obsession because it forces him to reflect his own behaviour and beliefs towards Loki. I will be getting into that in the next chapter.

Chapter 15: Your Advice

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Cyrax stared at the wall. He had been tossing his explosive and catching it blindly in one hand. He had not spoken for hours. He was mourning, Loki just knew it.

He began to fiddlle with his hands as he watched the yellow clad assassin.

"We'll need to figure out what to do with Skarlet," said Loki. "I'm surprised your net has sustained her for that long. I was thinking of leaving her in the krypt to be discovered. However, I'm worried she will be punished severely for failing her mission."

"Why should you care?" Cyrax finally said.

"Because I know what it's like," Loki glanced under the bed where she was still stuck. "How many nights has it been? We'll need to get her something-"

"She only wants blood," Cyrax scoffed, "She's been refusing water for a reason."

"What do you suggest I do, then?"

"Look, Loki. I understand that you're used to being told what to do, but this is your problem. I did the catching part, you handle what comes next. But since you're really lost, I suggest you kill her."

It went quiet again. Loki's attempt at conversation wasn't appreciated yet again. 'Speak only when spoken to', his mind supplied. He frowned in contempt. That was always how it was. And for once, someone being upset was not Loki's fault.

"Sorry about Sub-Zero," he said firmly, "Liu Kang will defeat Scorpion."

"Do you think I want Liu Kang to defeat him?" Cyrax said aggressively. "Liu Kang is no friend of ours, how would he avenge any of us?"

"I thought you denounced the Lin Kuei," Loki challenged, "He was deceived into walking to his death. There was no way a Shirai Ryu and a Lin Kuei could willingly work on the same side, not without getting rid of bad blood."

"What are you saying, Loki?" Cyrax asked, tiredly. He caught the bomb, not throwing it in the air again.

"This was a set up. I'm sure you figured that out, but you don't want to admit it. It would be humiliating. After all, you'd expect your employer to not inconvenience you, their employee," Loki began to smirk, "We all know Shang Tsung is a manipulative sorcerer who's out for everyone's soul. He already has Scorpion's soul, maybe he wants Bi Han's."

"No," Cyrax shook his head, "Shang Tsung isn't that kind of sorcerer. Scorpion must've been sent here on someone else's behalf."

"Right, aid Outworld and in return he gets his revenge on the Lin Kuei that murdered his family," Loki tilted his head, "Sub-Zero never came across as the sort, but an assassin is assassin."

"Are you bitter?" Cyrax goaded, "That Bi Han decided you weren't worth his time enough to entertain your desperate need to find others like you?"

"I can only be so bitter," Loki admitted, "We were technically enemies. There was only so much he could tell me. What are you going to do after we win the tournament? While you stay with the Wu Shi, will you get rid of the bad energy surrounding you? Or will you still kill people for money?"

Cyrax avoided eye contact, "Worry about protecting me, not my business."

"What was your home, Cyrax?"

"What do you mean?"

Loki threw up his hands cautiously, "I don't want to make any rude assumptions, but you're clearly not Chinese by blood. Did you come from an immigrant family by any chance?"

"No. I was taken in. Sektor found me, he-" He paused, "I came from Botswana. I was a mechanic, and they recruited me. My family was killed earlier that same year. I was 15 when that happened," he began throwing his bomb and catching it again. "It's your turn now."

Loki scoffed, "You already know about me-"

"But why are you here, in Earthrealm? What else happened in that realm of yours?"

It was only fair to tell him. Besides, if Loki opened himself up just a bit, it might get rid of any thoughts that Cyrax had of him being incompetent. Loki did not like anyone believing he was incompetent.

"I am 1045 years old. In human years, I think I am 19 or 21. I staged an interruption at a special event revolving around my brother. I was caught, and I was punished by being sent to Earth. I used to practise magic myself, but it was stripped off as part of that punishment."

"But not your other abilities?"

"I did not know about my cryomancy until I was trained by Master Shujinko."

"Odd," Cyrax said to himself, "Sub-Zero and Tundra knew ever since they were children."

"Tundra?"

"Story for another time." Cyrax dismissed.

"If you keep protecting these people, there's no point running from them."

Cyrax smiled, for the first time since Loki met him. "Stick to your own advice."

So, Skarlet's been rotting under the bed with no food or water...

Chapter 16: Hogun the Grim

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

The people of Vanir cared about war and conquest as much as Asgardians did, but not the glory of it. Not the bloodshed. Vanaheim valued peace before war, but war was always an option. Conflict didn't come often. Everyone lived in tents, and the royal family lived to serve their people.

At least, that's what Hogun's parents told him. His mother followed Queen Frigga to Asgard, and urged Hogun to watch over her two sons. Hogun had befriended Thor in childhood, and they would run off often during gatherings. As Hogun grew up in Asgard, he began to appreciate the warrior culture. He enjoyed going on the hunt for beasts. He enjoyed defeating the enemies. He enjoyed many things, and the euphoria that came with it. Now, it was time to mature.

Hogun was beginning to understand where Loki came from. Loki had traits that were celebrated amongst Vanirkind, but they had become twisted when mixed with the Asgardian world view. The Vanir fought out of justice, Aesir did it for fun. Hogun got hooked on the justice. Drunk on it. Celebrated it. Loki didn't care for either of them. Loki operated on something else, but Hogun was never able to find out what it was.

Hogun began to rethink a lot of things ever since the death of Laufey.

Being a sooth speaker paired with being a cunning strategist was a recipe for distrust, at least Hogun thought so. The whole of Asgard thought so, yet he, Thor and the others went on many crusades with Loki, and not once did Loki turn on them.

It seemed Loki going against them, or opposing them the slightest bit was seen as some kind of betrayal. Odin had made sure to soften him up that way, and Thor to many extents. Loki, a boy with his own thoughts and opinions, wasn't allowed to oppose anyone.

Prince Loki has always been a mysterious person to Hogun. He was a sickly child, so Hogun didn't see him often growing up. Always indoors where he was kept safe from the heat.

Hogun remembered Loki being in his early teens when they officially met. Just as he used to hide behind Frigga's skirt, he hid behind Thor. Loki had begun his training with Volstagg, paired with his already learned Seidr, and caught up with everyone splendidly. Loki, though eager, had restraint. If he was more daring, he could use the restraint to control people, Thor most of all. Maybe Odin knew that, and wanted to ensure Loki would never catch onto that ability.

Loki's Jotnar heritage must've added another layer to Odin's treatment of him. The Prince used to be monitored at all times. What Hogun thought was the King's display at protecting his son was actually just him making sure Loki wasn't up to no good. Loki was undeniably loyal to Odin, so it wouldn't make sense unless Odin himself had been up to something.

Hogun should've remembered how the Aesir liked to take things from their enemies, a trait his mother despised. It was why he was supposed to watch over him and Thor, but he had shamefully gotten carried away and forgot his duties. His parents swore loyalty to Queen Frigga when she had been a princess, it was only fair Hogun swore the same to both her sons.

It was why Hogun had to protect them both from Sif.

Notes:

Please excuse how obsessed I've been with Hogun. I think the main reason I'm fixated on him is because he's played by Tadanobu Asano, and if he was played by anyone else I (theoretically) wouldn't have cared about him as much.

Chapter 17: Turning Red

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Earthrealm successfully won the tournament. Liu Kang defeated Scorpion, Princess Kitana, and then Goro. Shang Tsung was defeated last. As the warriors left Shang's island, Loki and Cyrax escaped via Raiden's teleportation. Loki carried Skarlet all the way, since she was his responsibility. Loki was on thin ice dragging everyone into his deal to protect Cyrax.

She still hadn't eaten or drank anything for days. Loki tried.

Loki brought the cup of water to Skarlet's lips, and just like his past attempts, she turned her face to avoid his. A tired hiss could be heard, and Loki huffed in response.

"Is this your way of dying honourably?" he asked her, "You don't want to give me any satisfaction, is that it?"

Kai entered the bedroom, holding a tray of food.

"You missed dinner, again. How's she holding up?" he set down the tray on a nightstand.

Loki tutted, "Stubborn. You didn't knock."

Kai sheepishly apologised, looking between them. "Um, is she, like, your girlfriend?"

"No."

Kai shrugged, "It looks like it."

Loki held his head up, "I have no interest in courting anyone during this time. I was simply worried about what her father would do to her."

"That's a lot of worry you got there," Kai looked around, "You got her a private bedroom, and you've been nursing her, trying to keep her alive. Definitely not your girlfriend."

"I would've done the same for Cyrax."

Kai still had that mischievous smile, "Definitely not your boyfriend."

Loki kicked at him, but Kai jumped out of the way in time.

"See you around." Kai left the room.

It became eerily quiet again.

"Skarlet," Loki hesitantly pointed to his wrist, "I will let you drink from me, but only if we strike a deal."

She narrowed her eyes at him. The skin around them had become purple in consequence to her health deteriorating.

"This may be a lot to ask for, but you can only use your powers on evil people. And no matter what, don't let it destroy you."

She made a small nod. Small, but still a nod. It was mos certainly a lie, but Loki would certainly punish her if the time came to it.

Loki brought his wrist to her lips. He knew it was her magic, but he didn't know how it worked. He waited. Nothing. She was weak.

He summoned a dagger, and carefully cut a small line. Skarlet watched, and her eyes lit up. His wrist began to shine red, and his veins started to turn red. She wasn't feeding from her mouth like Loki thought she was going to, but he could feel the sensation of being drained.

It started to hurt, and she started to look pleased.

"Skarlet, that's enough." he told her.

He felt something sharp under his skin, like he was being cut by a large knife.

"That's enough." he brought his arm away from her and began shaking it in hopes to get rid of that cutting feeling.

Unknowingly, his eyes began to turn red. He felt warm, like the room was becoming hotter. He rubbed his wrist, and his skin was starting to turn blue. Markings appeared soon afterwards.

"Oh no!" he cried, shivering from the warmth. "Skarlet, stop!" he screamed.

Skarlet herself began to scream.

"Let me get this straight. You let her feed from you, and then you turned blue, and then she got internal frostbite, which I didn't know was possible by the way." Kai asked.

Loki, now wearing less layers of clothes thanks to his blue skin, looked ashamed.

"So, Aesirs and Vanirs look like humans. That Aesir form was also your human skin? And after Skarlet started getting too much blood, your body went into offence mode?"

Loki nodded, "And that's why she's in the healing chambers."

They heard footsteps, and turned to see Cyrax. He was dressed in monk attire, with some yellow accessories that made him feel more comfortable.

"I heard about what happened," he glared at Loki, "Told you."

Kai stepped in front of Loki protectively, "Told him what? Don't come here with your bad energy after-"

Cyrax stepped forward as well, "I told him to leave her to die. He wasn't obligated to-"

"The same way he's not obligated to protect you?" Kai interrupted, "I get that you're a former assassin, but some manners would be nice."

"Kai, I made a deal with him," Loki said. "And I also did it on behalf of the White Lotus. Who we let in here is grounds for his concern. Shang Tsung hired the Lin Kuei. Who's to say Skarlet won't lead them right to him."

"That doesn't mean he gets to talk smack."

Cyrax narrowed his eyes at them in contempt, "I'm right here, you two."

"Sorry," Loki apologised, "People have done that to me, so I thought it was normal. I'm surprised both of you haven't said anything."

Kai and Cyrax glanced at each other, "About what?"

"About my real appearance." Loki gestured to himself.

Kai shrugged, "After finding out that viking gods exist, and that some of them might be sent to Earth as a punishment for ruining their adoptive brother's coronation, I don't think anything else can surprise us anymore."

Frost Giant Loki

Chapter 18: Room for Improvement

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Everyone was quiet during breakfast. There were occasional glances thrown at Loki, which he ignored. Next to Loki sat Skarlet and Cyrax, and across from him Liu Kang, Kung Lao and Kai. Not one of them have gotten used to his true form, except Kai.

Finally, Liu Kang asked "Are you going to walk around the village like that?"

"I don't know how to turn back. My fath- Odin's curse was to make me equivalent to a human, but he couldn't get rid of the- My Jotun heritage. I believe it was hiding underneath, protected by the human glamour."

Kung Lao clicked his chop sticks in thought,  "Well, it means room for improvement, doesn't it? You said Asgardians are stronger than humans, even the children, so as an extension, so would Vanir and Jotnar."

Loki stared at him, "Yes."

"Your human form makes you a weak frost giant."

Loki looked between Liu Kang and Kung Lao, "What is the room for improvement you're talking about?"

"Meditating," said Liu Kang, "It is now considered a form of soul manipulation. The difference between meditation and soul magic is that you aren't repetitively feeding off of other souls. It makes us stronger and live a longer lifespan, but to a fault."

Kung Lao clicked his chopsticks again, "It also helps us with handling our abilities. Meditating lets us be at peace with ourselves."

Loki snorted, "I know that Skarlet will be needing that." he yelped at a kick to his shin.

"You most of all, Loki." Liu Kang said seriously.

"Me?" Loki rose a brow.

Kai shrugged, "You do seem to have some self love issues, just saying. You keep to yourself, but you hate being alone. Your dad- Odin must've really messed you up with your self image. Or maybe it was your brother," he threw his hands up, "I'm just saying!"

Skarlet paused. It was almost obvious. A person just had to get to know Loki enough to pick up on it. If he wasn't oblivious he was actively ignoring it. Proving himself to no one in particular. No one that they could see or have met.

"Liu Kang wants to guide you on your meditation journey?" Shujinko asked, sceptical.

"We can't call it a journey just yet, I've only been considering it, but yes."

"I don't see a problem, why come to me about it?"

Loki glanced at the floor, "I was wondering if you could give me a few tips before I make a decision."

Shujinko stood there, playing with his beard. And then he said, "Meditation is very spiritual. It's like sleeping, except you have control. Sleep is like time travel, but you can't go back. All you know is that you're suddenly in the future. I used to meditate to get rid of extra time. Dreams are very spiritual. Everything is spiritual before it is physical."

Loki should've known that he'll be listening to the ramblings of an old man. Now he had no choice but to stand and listen kindly.

"Always remember, Loki. Meditating is a very vulnerable thing to do, and can be dangerous. If you don't have experience, you risk allowing bad energy to affect your spirit, sometimes even taking over completely. It is very important to be cautious of who you let around you, and where you meditate."

"Of course there's a risk."

"All things come with risks, Loki. It is how we grow, and become better," Shujinko tilted his head, "If you do wish to take Liu Kang on his offer, the only advice I can give is to never be afraid. It gives power to wicked things. You must always keep yourself in good spirits."

"At this point, Loki may as well become a monk completely." Cyrax mused.

"If he becomes a monk, what will you become?" Skarlet asked him.

"What are you without blood magic? A killer with other options," Cyrax side eyed her, "I don't see anyone coming to avenge you. I'd have thought Shang tsung would take his chance to."

"Shang Tsung has better things to do," She snapped, "Matters that do not concern me."

Notes:

The whole meditating is a form of soul manipulation thing wasn't my idea, it's actually a theory from Cynical Warlock, he's made videos on Mortal Kombat for various topics.

Chapter 19: Queen Frigga

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Frigga would stare down at Odin in the months that he had yet to awaken. Often she would tap his forehead, where the vital spirit was located. She hoped she disturbed it, even slightly. She knew it would be nothing compared to the damage he's caused others. Frigga preferred him to stay asleep as it allowed her more freedom.

One such freedom Frigga enjoyed was meeting old friends and chatting with them in her garden.

“It’s been years since we last met, Frigga. I am deeply sorry.”

“You can only visit so often, Zaya.”

Zaya, a slanted eyed, dark-haired woman around Frigga’s own age, smiled at her tightly. She had taken off her fur coat and hat thanks to the warm weather. Her long dark braids almost reached her feet dangerously, though she was not threatened by the hazard she set for herself.

“I urge you to check on your son,” she told Frigga, “I fear danger ahead on many sides.”

“Thor won’t be doing anything to Loki-”

“That’s not what I’m worried about. Thor loves Loki more than he cares about anything else.”

Frigga rolled her eyes, “Everyone says that.”

“But it’s true!” Zaya gushed, “He’s been using Hogun as a surrogate. You’d think he’d do that for any of the other warriors? The blonde one isn’t smart enough, and the ginger one doesn’t know responsibility.”

“Thor is just like his father. I don’t think it’s love he has for Loki,” Frigga began to fiddle with her hands in thought. ”Everyone may say otherwise, but I’ve had the luxury of watching him grow.”

“It’s a disfigured love,” Zaya agreed, “Speaking of which, my son suspects that something is happening with Lady Sif,” she smiled, “Her and your dearest Loki are great enemies, aren’t they?”

“In her own mind,” Frigga frowned at the thought of her, “She seems to think she’s better than everyone.”

“For being friends with Thor, or for being a warrior?”

“There have been many female warriors, Sif wouldn’t be special. I think that’s what she’s trying to prove the most.”

“Is that why Loki angers her?” A curious but cruel spark appeared in Zaya's eyes. “Why did he cut her hair again? What petty reason was there to do such a thing?”

“Sif is lucky Loki didn’t take her head,” Frigga hissed, which was rare for her to do. “She offended a prince, she should’ve known better. Even back then.”

“Steady on! I’m just trying to understand their rivalry, or lack of it.”

“What do you mean?”

“Why would Sif pay so much attention to Loki? Why so obsessed, unless she would like him for herself. The mages have found that this is a tactic some do.”

Frigga stayed silent in a bizarre mix of shock and surprise. She had been so certain that Sif hated Loki, yet the possibility of it being the opposite was strangely undeniable. She too once believed Odin hated her, only to become trapped with him. His greatest punishment.

“I’m curious, though,” Zaya continued, “What did Prince Loki do?”

It unnerved Frigga to remember it. Loki had been punished for what he did to Sif, and the incident was not to be spoken of again. He had been a teenager, and at that age his temper was to be reckoned with. Sif had managed to pin Loki while they were training and called him submissive. Loki claimed she pulled his hair while doing it. His hair had been longer then, and after that day he began keeping it short and straight.

The more Loki was disrespected, the more her traditions became nothing to him.

The sound of Zaya gushing interrupted her line of thought.

“It’s breaking your heart thinking about it, then forget about it.”

Frigga’s face went dark, “Sif deserved it.”

I had to juggle between making Sif obsessively hateful, or obsessively mixed in a love and hate for Loki. After I decided it would be the former, I ended up writing this. Yeah... writing Sif is a mess at the moment.

It is traditional for Vanirs to have long hair, or hair is just really important to them.

Chapter 20: Heimdall

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

"Prince Loki is under no danger, King Thor," Heimdall said, "The mortals are treating him well."

Thor was not satisfied with the answer, though tried to appear cheerful. "Can you describe what is happening to him this very second? I miss my brother dearly, surely you would understand."

Not that Heimdall had any cherished family members that Thor knew of.

"He sits with his legs crossed and his eyes closed," Heimdall described, "He is in his Jotun form."

Thor frowned, "Jotun form? Explain."

"Prince Loki experienced an incident where his true skin was forced to reveal itself as an attempt to protect him. A Jotun's blood can be just as deadly as their touch."

"You said Loki wasn't in danger," Thor glared, his cheery facade disappearing completely. "What happened to Loki? What are you keeping from me?"

Heimdall didn't react.

"Heimdall, answer me or I will have you punished on the suspicion of treason." Thor warned.

"I believed it would be necessary for Prince Loki's growth," Heimdall admitted, "He isn't enough of a warrior. He relied too much on his spells when he was in Asgard. While he has found other ways to use magic, though primitive compared to what he used to do-"

"Get to your point."

"He is beginning to fight the proper way. It is still in his own fashion, his wit would not leave so suddenly, but Prince Loki is no longer just using his daggers. I wish you could see his changes for yourself, you would be proud."

Thor studied Heimdall for hints of any deception. He wasn't able to find any, as Heimdall's expression would not change no matter what. He decided to take his chances though.

"What else are you hiding from me?"

"I didn't want to make any assumptions, but I suspect that Prince Loki didn't take the All-Father's punishment well."

Thor furrowed his brows. "Continue."

"He may have misinterpreted Odin's intentions, for he has denounced Asgard. He now goes by Loki of Vanaheim."

Thor began to chuckle, and his eyes became menacing. "Throughout the time that this was happening, you didn't think to inform me or even my closest allies."

Heimdall knew that those allies were Hogun and Frigga.

"There was a war, and in his human form, Loki would've been in far more danger than in Midgard. A war you started, King Thor. You almost failed to protect your brother, and he failed to be your greatest adviser. What are the odds that the war would've been dealt with accordingly? What are the odds that you wouldn't be each other's biggest distractions? Now that Loki is no longer in your reach, you are no longer careless enough to make hasty decisions."

"Excuses," Thor dismissed, "You are to now tell me everything that poses a single threat to Loki. You will report back to me if something happens to him. Failure to uphold your duties means treason against the crown."

Heimdall bowed, "Yes, your Highness."

Notes:

The true Heimdall chapter.

Writing Heimdall is really interesting because he's watched Loki grow from a baby to a man, yet tried to kill him.

I think it would've been interesting that even if he has some prejudiced views on Jotuns and is almost as racist as other Asgardians, there's a small part of him that has a fondness for Loki. However, he will only accept Loki if he chooses to live a life that fully honours the Asgardian lifestyle.

Chapter 21: Nightwolf

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

There was complete peace. Complete silence. There was nothing happening in his mind. Loki felt nothing, a feeling he had come to prefer and appreciate.

"The Mad Titan," came a soft feminine whisper. "Chaos is coming, Loki."

A woman appeared. She was young, around Loki's age, with light skin, gingerish hair and a slight slant to her eyes. She wore a wide crown (kokoshnik) and a fine deel of great quality.

She pointed ahead.

"Look!" she told him. "Death awaits."

There were images. Worlds being destroyed. Countless races going extinct. There were screams, loss, and the inability to resolve.

Loki opened his eyes.

"Johnny Cage disappears off the face of the Earth for three months, and it turns out he's been with the Matoka?" Kai asked incredulously, "And I can't believe you never told me you met the guy. You should really watch Time Smashers, or Citizen Cage-"

"I've seen enough films, Kai. Besides, that's not why we're visiting America. I need answers. This is the 3rd time I've been seeing her. I thought I was accidentally distracting myself, but now not so much."

"Why not ask Raiden? Or Shujinko? Why do we have to go all the way to Nightwolf?"

Loki shook his head at him, "Raiden can listen to my prayers, but he said he cannot answer my visions. Dreams are spiritual. Raiden told me he'll have philosophy to share."

Raiden teleported both Kai and Loki to America, specifically East Virginia. Kai was looking forward to travelling, only to remember that Loki couldn't be seen in public.

They followed Raiden through the Matokan land. The tribe people stared at Loki as they passed, some of them were curious, and others did so at a cautious distance.

"If we were just going to teleport why am I here, if not a tour guide?"

"There is something for you too, Kai. Be patient." said Raiden.

They saw Johnny ahead of them, who waved brightly. He shades were gone, and he was dressed in normal clothes. He ran up to them.

"Hey, guys!" he greeted them. He looked at Kai, "Who's this?"

"I'm Kai, Shaolin nurse." said Kai, nonchalantly.

"Johnny Cage."

He and Johnny shook hands. Loki could tell that Kai was hiding how giddy he really was.

Johnny looked directly at Loki. "Your eyes are shinier. I'm loving the new skin routine."

"Thanks?" he looked down at his hands. How could Johnny easily ignore it?

"Greetings, Johnny Cage," said Raiden, "We have come seeking Nightwolf. Loki has been receiving visions of destruction, we are hoping that Nightwolf will have answers."

"Sure, I know where he is. He might be busy, though. Being a leader of a tribe means you have to feed many mouths."

Loki snorted, "I don't think that's how it works."

Johnny grinned, "You know what I meant."

They met with Nightwolf, who sat them down. Raiden teleported away to continue his duties at the academy.

"Can you tell me why you began meditating? What put you on this journey?" Nightwolf asked Loki.

"It was Liu and Lao's idea. They said it would give me health benefits."

Nightwolf stayed silent, so Loki went on.

"I don't want to come off as greedy, or a coward, but I wanted to have a better understanding of my abilities. And I hated how... Lonely I felt. I wanted to get rid of that feeling."

"What visions have you been receiving?"

"A woman warning me of danger, and what will happen. She hasn't told me that I should stop it or anything, but I don't know who I should be warning specifically."

"Can you tell me what the woman looked like? Do you remember?"

Loki straightened up, "It was my cousin, Sigyn."

Johnny made a childish look of disgust, "Isn't she your wife?"

Loki frowned, sharing that disgust. "No."

Nightwolf didn't appear pleased. "Spirits often disguise themselves as someone you know to either relay a message, or lead you astray. Shao Kahn or a greater evil must be plotting."

Loki leaned forward urgently, "She spoke of a mad titan."

"That could be anyone. Onaga. Shinnok. The One Being," Nightwolf turned to Kai. "Do you know that there is chaos in your blood?"

"W-what?" Kai blinked.

"May I see your fire?"

Kai showed his hand and lit his index finger. A small ball of green fire appeared.

"That's Chaosrealm fire," said Nightwolf, "You all still have so much to discover."

Notes:

It was such a good call for me to say Vanir should be based on both Mongolia and Russia. Russia was once ruled by vikings (or founded, I didn't really do research), and the kokoshnik resembles comic Sigyn's crown.

Edit: I forgot to write Johnny's reaction to Loki's skin.

Chapter 22: My Children

Notes:

So yeah, Loki's got more insecurities.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

"What did Shujinko tell you? Tell me the first answer that comes to mind."

"That everything is spiritual before it is physical."

"Good. Cryomancers use hydrokinesis with a terrakinetic mindset. They must be grounded, otherwise their abilities will only go so far. All of that reflects on your spirit and soul. You grew up not only feeling like you were different, but knowing it. You must fully embrace who you are, Loki. I understand that it won't be easy, considering that you've been dealing with this for more than a thousand years."

Loki furrowed his eyebrows, "What about Sub-Zero? Aren't assassins always on edge? Considering they make a living killing people, I would assume that would disturb the brain."

"Bi-Han was comfortable in his own skin," Nightwolf corrected, "You never are, no matter how much you pretend to be. There's more to it than that, isn't it."

Loki began to fiddle with his hands quietly as Nightwolf stared him down.

"There's something about your past that you're not confronting." said Nightwolf.

At the silence that followed, Loki asked, "You're not going to ask me what it is?"

"It's not my right to demand it."

"I have two children," Loki confessed, "Technically, three, but if you ask me, they were all born out of unnatural circumstances."

Nightwolf narrowed his eyes, "Can you define unnatural?"

"Svadilfari was my father's horse. He died in a tragic mission I was in. Thor borrowed him, confident that he could bring him back. I used Svadilfai's remains to bring Sleipnir forth, using my own blood. That's how Sleipnir was born. I gifted him to Odin as an apology, on Thor's behalf."

Nightwolf watched as Loki's face was saddened.

"He was only a foal. My twins, Jormungandr and Hel, were both born naturally, though illegitimate. Hel was stillborn, and in efforts to save her, she ended up being half alive. She still grew like a normal child would, but I couldn't keep her in Asgard. Same with Jormungandr, but instead of death he was born a sea serpent. I had to quickly put him in a bowl of water to keep him alive."

"What about their mother?"

Loki's voice wavered as he said, "Angrboda," his eyes watered. "I was young. It was a mistake- I"

"You were a young boy and wanted love. That happens."

"That's not all!" Loki exclaimed, "None of it was real. The love I had for Angrboda, I thought she reciprocated it. By the time our babies were healthy enough, she showed her true colours. A frost giantess, sent to kill the son of Odin. Since I was heavily guarded in my youth, she assumed I was the most valuable. She planned the day we met, up to the end. To her, my children were an accident."

He remembered that night. She turned blue right before his eyes, and her brown hair had become a venomous black. If having Jormungandr and Hel meant keeping Loki in his delusion, then she was fine with it. So long as it guaranteed taking away the most protected son of Odin. A punishment for Odin.

"What have you concluded by talking about your children?"

"I'm..." Loki paused.

"You're a terrible father." Nightwolf finished for him.

"Yes," Loki reluctantly admitted, "But thanks to my Jotun blood, I believe they are in more danger than they were before."

"Can you tell me anything more about your children? Anything that gives you a good memory."

Loki snorted as he wiped a tear, "Hel's name was Odin's idea. I assumed that he was thinking of Helheim, and was insulted. And yet, I gave her that name because it is the only time I can think of him saying a name fondly."

A name that wasn't Thor. Or Frigga.

"Jormungandr was named after one of Angrboda's parents. He was a little too big for his age by the time he was a toddler. I had to find him a large body of water to put him in. The last time I saw them both was too long ago. Fifty years or so. They were playing with their cousins in Vanaheim."

"Cousins?"

"Vali and Narfi, on my mother's side. They are decent men. A pair of twins themselves. They love their home there that sometimes I feel guilty for simply thinking of visiting them. It would disrupt heir happiness."

"You think they hate you?"

"They must," Loki shook his head, "I didn't do enough for them. If things were different, I don't think I would've been able to give them a better life."

Notes:

I was debating on whether or not I should mention Loki's children, especially since the MCU changed a lot of things, and I'm trying to be consistent with the writing. I figured, since I made Sigyn and Loki cousins (through Frigga), I can still play around with the origins and such. Jormungandr and Hel were sent to Vanaheim in efforts to keep them protected from judgemental and treasonous Asgardians. Vali and Narfi are Loki's cousins (not Sigyn's siblings), and look after them.

Fenrir is Hela's pet, so I decided not to touch on that unless I change my mind later on. Hel was named after her aunt Hela, so there's 2 goddesses of death. Jormungandr can breathe without water, but couldn't do so until he reached a certain age. He's a clear example of Jotuns being shapeshifters.

Chapter 23: Princess Hel

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Noob Saibot was already having a roller coaster adjusting to his second life, or death. Wraith's didn't have many concerns. All he had to do was what his master told him, even though he vehemently desired to overthrow them.

The last thing he was expecting was to help a teenage girl talking about office related things. She blabbered on about planets, realms and different species. Her appearance was much like her aura. Half dead, somehow. It was like she was stuck in the middle of a bridge of resurrection, or a beginner necromancer did a poor job trying to bring her back. Half zombie, half living. Her living side had soft brown curls, pale but fair skin, and a red iris eye.

She wore all black, but in Earthrealm business attire.

This was Quan Chi's problem, not his. He was still forced to act as a bodyguard and be present for their conversation. She did, after all, appear at the gates of the Netherrealm without warning, and the power coming from her was not to be denied.

"Hello, Quan Chi." she greeted, bowing respectfully.

The sorcerer stared down curiously, "Who are you?"

"I am Princess Hel," she said brightly, "I work for Helheim, the Yggdrasil's underworld for unfortunate souls. I was wondering if I could speak to you about the complications of genocide?"

A representative of another hell. Her appearance suddenly made sense.

"Why is that my concern?"

"I was wondering if we could help each other out. Have the demons been dealing with any problems, such as having too many responsibilities at once?"

"No." Quan Chi said, though he glanced at Noob Saibot for a clue. Noob was just as perplexed. What was she talking about?

"There are many different underworlds," Hel continued, "Helheim is simply one of them. And then there's yours, the Netherrealm. There are five others. Usually, we deal with deaths accordingly, but there's been an uprise in numbers in the past 300 years or so, and these deaths would not happen the usual way."

"Define usual." Quan Chi demanded.

"Murder, illness, war and famine. Natural causes, Quan Chi. Studies showed that these were caused by species being wiped out in a blink. This has caused our grim reapers to be overworked, and not enough time to sort out the souls. As a result, they've been forced to pass these souls to other underworlds, even if they do not belong in that religion. I wanted to check if you were dealing with that same problem."

"Not to my knowledge," he said, "I will run an investigation. Thank you for visiting, Princess."

Notes:

I know it might not be canon, but based on the Spawn intros there are many different Hells, and the Netherrealm is one of them. I can imagine Hel having tea with other death gods, like Baron Samedi and Hades.

You may be confused about the whole princess thing, and I figured someone else might have already been ruling over Helheim. And since Hel is supposed to be a teenager, I thought she would be some kind of representative or messenger. She still has an important role, but ins't high in the ranks.
