Summary
Dr. Elena Kaede, a psychiatrist with the Evol of empathic manifestation, works with victims of Wanderer attacks. When a Deepspace Hunter is brought in after a high-level Wanderer encounter, she clashes with the brilliant but stoic cardiac surgeon, Dr. Zayne. Elena opposes his demand for immediate surgery, arguing the patient’s severe shock makes the procedure too dangerous. Their conflict highlights the tension between Zayne’s rigid logic and Elena’s empathetic, human-centered approach. Yet Elena’s Evol senses something deeper—beneath Zayne’s calm demeanor lies a storm of guilt, grief, and an enigmatic pain.
One night, Elena is attacked by a stray Wanderer outside the hospital. Zayne saves her, but his Evol spirals out of control, encasing his arms in ice. Using her Evol, Elena calms his anguish, grounding him in a way no one else ever has in a long time.
What she sees as kindness becomes something far more to him. Zayne’s gratitude warps into obsession, his stoic mask hiding a consuming need to keep Elena—his anchor, his salvation, by his side.
As he takes drastic measures to bind her closer, Elena realizes too late that her attempt to save him has chained her to him forever.
