The evening was quiet as Willy walked Noodle home, their day together consisting of looking around his new factory and gathering ingredients together like the old days. Briskness was apparent like the old days, cold that prickled Noodle's skin. The stars above twinkled merrily, but it was only now that Noodle was able to understand why characters in books described the night sky like that. The way how her life played out before a description like that was too sweet, something just out of reach just like the stars.
Noodle looked away from the stars when Willy placed his coat around her shoulders. It was such a bright red it was like she was being warmed up by a giant, crimson colored rose petal. She idly thought that it was appropriate that this magician of a man was able to introduce sweetness into her life, by chocolate and helping her get out of the boardinghouse. It was one of those moments that made her feel like she should say something, and what came to mind wasn't really all that sweet.
"Willy," she said, her breath stark against the night sky. "You know, I used to think about running away from everything."
Nothing in his expression indicated surprise. What was left was a gentle sadness, a sort of big brotherly feeling of protection for what Noodle had endured. There was familiarity there, a shared pain. Noodle wondered how far he ran when he lost his mom.
"How do you feel now?" Willy asked, quiet and gentle. It was a complete contrast to how bombastic he was when presenting his amazing confections and something Noodle appreciated.
"I wouldn't want to leave for anything." Noodle smiled up at him. Willy gave a pat to her back before walking with more energy in his step. Noodle picked up the pace to match him, mirroring his eagerness for what was cooking in his mind.
"Come on, Noodle," Willy said. "Let's hurry out of the cold and have some hot chocolate."
"You'll make some when you take me back home?"
"Ah, you and I both know your mother is better at making hot chocolate," Willy said. "I'll just add the marshmallows."
He didn't elaborate on what flavor they were which meant they could be chillingly minty or taste like the sweetest vanilla or be something entirely new that amazingly delicious. Noodle couldn't wait to find out.
