I used the Newsies jr. script for reference, so it's a bit different than the dialog in the Broadway show.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Ask anyone of the newsies and they'd tell you, without a doubt, that Davey Jacobs was the most well-behaved newsie in the state of New York. Anyone except Davey, that is. Davey knew that he wasn’t that well behaved. He sometimes wouldn’t do his homework until his history teacher was collecting it, he would sometimes raise his voice at Les or fight with Sarah, but hands down, the worst thing Davey ever did was fall in love with Jack Kelly.

 

Jack Kelly was the leader of the lower Manhattan newsies and the leader of the newsboy strike of 1899. He was like the king of New York, as Racetrack liked to say. Jack was an inspiration to all. He was heroic and charismatic and creative and was an amazing leader. He also thought Davey was all things wonderful.

 

Jack Kelly made David Jacobs feel alive.
