A good Crossroads demon knew how to play the long game to avoid catching the attention of Hunters. It was best to work undercover, only offering deals to the most desperate one or two every few years. Just last year he'd made a deal with a White Dove who just couldn't have another child and would do anything to not be pregnant again. He'd conjured up a potion to sterilize her, and in nine years he'd collect her soul. He'd given a philanderer a way to hide from his wife and another man a couple of inches in his pants, a not-so-surprising request given his own deal centuries earlier.
Crowley liked his day job well enough as well. A showman, gambler, and hotel proprietor in a little frontier town named Independence. He thought he'd had a mark when Kate Carver came around, but she was strikingly self-sufficient. He's to the point now that he thinks most of the townspeople aren't desperate enough and he should move on, but the idea of just leaving puts a sour taste in his mouth.
It's not until the Davidsons threaten Miss Carver, his little bee, that he decides it's time to sell the hotel and move on. There's bound to be more desperate people in the next town over and the big cities. Maybe he'll come back to town to check on Kate. He's grown rather fond of her in this life.
