Work Text:

“Can we go home now?” Matthias groans and Nina smiles, nods. He sits up a little more, grips at the armrests like he doesn’t quite know what to do with them. He’s tall, but the dentist chair is long and his feet don’t dangle off the edge like they usually do.

“Yes,” she agrees, “We can go home now. We just have to get up.”

Matthias looks around and Nina watches as his eyes glaze over the space, studying it without taking any of it in. He frowns at his feet, moves his toes, and then glances over at one of the windows.

“Where are we?” he asks.

“The dentist,” Nina prompts, “Remember they-”

“They took my teeth,” Matthias says, confusion turning to horror, “Give them back, those are my bones.”

He looks genuinely upset, with a deep frown and those puppy dog eyes that Nina fell for in the first place.

“They’re actually not b- nevermind,” Nina says, “It’s okay Matthias, it was good they were hurting you remember.”

She didn’t even know Matthias still had his wisdom teeth until two months ago when they had started coming in with a vengeance, but turns out he had a full set that needed to be removed. Sooner rather than later when considering the amount of pain Matthias has been. She would have thought he’d be glad about it, but the drugs are obviously making that a little different.

“Oh,” Matthias frowns and considers and Nina gives him a moment hoping he’ll get his bearings a little more and then they can head out. “Right.” Nina sighs in relief, checks her phone, replies to the text from Kaz saying that he can bring the car around.

“Kaz is waiting in the car,” she encourages him, “So we can go home right now.”

“Okay,” Matthias frowns, and then looks over at her, “You are really pretty.”

She flushes lightly, shakes her head.

“And you're on a lot of drugs.”

“I can be on drugs and you can be pretty,” he points out, surprisingly coherent and she blushes further. And then, “Hot,” he decides after a moment, “pretty and hot. You are both.”

Matthias calls her pretty all the time, but he doesn't often use the word hot. Nina knows she is, all thick thighs, large belly, fat shoulders of her. She also knows that Matthias thinks it too, has made him admit it on more than one occasion but he’s such a blushing gentleman about it and to see him completely straight faced say she’s hot is a shock.

“Okay well thai pretty hot person is telling you it’s time to go home,” she recovers quickly.

“Okay,” Matthias accepts, and stands immediately. He’s not look where he’s going though and one of his feet catches on the seat and he stumbles as he stands, forcing Nina to catch his arm.

“I didn’t mean get up that fast,” she hisses trying to avoid him falling minutes after waking up.

“You said we were going home,” he frowns, finding his balance. The nurse gestures to the wheelchair and Nina gets him sitting, lets the nurse push him out of the room and down the hall to the elevator. She didn’t think he’d actually need it but she’d rather Matthias not trip and crack his head open and need more surgery right after getting his wisdom teeth removed.

“We are,” she promises, as they move, “You just have to be careful, okay?”

Matthias pouts, but nods. His cheeks are already swelling up and they’ll have to put ice on him the minute they get home to get some of that down. He’d had top and bottom ones, a full set of wisdom teeth that had to be removed and Nina doesn’t envy him. She’d only had bottom ones and had hers out before they caused her any issues at all.

“I do not like this,” he complains, as the elevator opens and the nurse pushes him out, “I feel weird.” He complains loudly and it’s odd to see him like this, out of it and vocal about what he’s feeling. Matthias isn’t exactly reserved but he’s also not incredibly forthcoming about what he feels and it’s strange to see.

“I know,” Nina soothes, “We’ll get home soon and you can rest. You can even sleep if you want. How does that sound?”

Matthias just hmpfs and crosses his arms, and Nina rolls her eyes. She’s had much more stubborn patients than Matthias, she can handle a little grumbling. She directs the nurse to their car, where Kaz has it pulled up to loading. The nurse tells him to get up slowly and he listens this time and Matthias is stable enough on his feet this time to slide into the car without assistance and without tripping over himself. Nina slides into the back with him, thanks the nurse, and closes the door.

“Oh no,” Matthias says, as he looks at Kaz in the driver's seat.

“What’s wrong Matthias?” Nina asks, trying to find what source of problem Kaz is at this time. It can be hard, when he’s the source of so many problems in the first place.

Matthias turns to her, blinks numerous times, then half whispers in a poor attempt at being quiet.

“He is hot too,” he hisses and Nina watches as Kaz works to stay steady, hand clutching the steering wheel beneath gloves just a little tighter. Nina thinks she might even see the traces of a smile.

“Oh yeah?” she teases, and Matthias nods clumsily.

“All of you- so hot,” he mutters dreamily and Nina tries not to laugh, but her mouth ticks into a smile regardless.

“Glad you think so,” she says, “Now let's get home.”

“Wait!” Matthias shouts, just as Kaz is pulling away from the curb, causing him to slam on the break.

“Jesus, what?” Kaz says, trembling slightly. Nina turns to Matthias, looks at his face for any signs of distress and doesn’t find any.

“What’s wrong Matthias?” she asks.

“I want a milkshake,” Matthias pouts.

She watches as Kaz shuts his eyes for a good few seconds, takes a deep breath, opens them and carries on driving, pulling away from the curb.

“You can’t have a straw,” Kaz explains, surprisingly gentle about the whole situation. Regardless, it’s not what Matthias wants to hear and he pouts easily, frowning deeply.

“I want a milkshake!” he insists again and Kaz sighs, looks towards Nina.

“You can have a milkshake,” she promises, “But we have to be careful because you can't use a straw, so you’ll have to use a spoon instead, okay? Either me or someone else can make you one when we get home. Does that sound okay?”

Matthias pouts, but doesn’t protest.

“Stupid straws,” he does grumble.

“Actually-” Kaz starts and Nina groans.

“Kaz I love you but do not start on your pro straw rant right now. We get it, they’re useful.”

Kaz glares at her, but seems to recognize the situation for what it is, because he falls silent.

“Nina,” Matthias says again, “You’re so sexy, can you cuddle me?”

That she does snort at and Kaz does too.

“What!” Matthias protests, “You are my girlfriend and I love you. I can call you sexy. Yes? I can, yes?”

“Yes,” she agrees, “You can. It’s just funny to hear you say. Especially in regards to cuddling me. Little bit of juxtaposition on that one.”

Matthias frowns a little at the word and Nina realizes he might not actually know what it means.

“Cuddling and sexy are a little bit opposite,” she clarifies, “Little funny you out them together,”

“Well we can’t have sex,” Matthias frowns and Nina chokes, coughs, “We’re in a car and my mouth hurts.”

Matthias isn’t a prude, he isn't, at least not anymore but that is a far way from being so open about sexuality and Nina finds herself gaping at him.

“I am so glad I’m here for this,” Kaz whispers gleefully as Nina blushes red.

“Jeez, what drugs did they give you?” she mutters and Matthias eyes widen.

“I’m on drugs?!” Matthias exclaims.

Notes:

Kaz's straw rant is MY straw rant which is basically that plastic straws are an essential resource for disabled people and pushing their elimination to 'save the turtles' or other such reasons is ableist when we should actually be holding large corporations responsibility for ocean dumping and climate change. I think Kaz would agree with me here.
