cordelia @daisycarstairs: I can't wait for everyone to listen to this week's episode of @talkingwghosts. It was amazing to record with @twg_luciehc and I can't wait to come back!
episode 1 - up all night:
Lucie : Hello, hello! Welcome to this episode of Talking With Ghosts ! Today we’re here with a super special guest, my best friend, also known for being part of The Booklovers channel on YouTube, say hi to my ghosts, Cordelia Carstairs!
Cordelia: Hi! I'm so happy to be back to the podcast, it's been ages since the last time we had a collab, I've missed it!
Lucie: I know, and that's why I'll give you the honours of explaining what we're gonna do today, and a little bit of what our collab is gonna be about.
Cordelia: Great! Well, Lucie and I have been One Direction fans since we were around thirteen and fourteen. Seriously, we had posters on our bedrooms’ walls, magazine collections with them on the cover, all their CDs...
Lucie: I still keep all of this, in a memory box.
Cordelia: Me too! Anyway, the other day, when she was sleeping over, we were listening to the boys’ songs and started to realize that many of them suited not only our relationships, but also our friends’, so we thought “Why not relate them?”. At first, we were going to do it just for the two of us, but things started to grow and Lucie said “I want to talk about this on the podcast” and I agreed, of course, and she continued: “but you have to present it with me, are you up for it?”.
Lucie: Cordelia screamed “YES!” so loud that Alastair, her older brother, came to tell her to keep it down, because of their baby brother.
Cordelia : And now here we are. Let me tell you how it’s going to work, right? Okay, the band has five albums, so it’s going to be a five-part series, where we’ll talk about each song, whether it relates to our friends, to us, whether it brings back memories...
Lucie: Basically, it’s going to be the two of us gossiping a bit using One Direction’s songs. So, let’s get down to business! The first album is “Up All Night”, which was released in Ireland and the UK on November 18, 2011. The version we chose is “The Souvenir Edition” which has eighteen songs. We might not talk about all of them, but it could happen.
Chapter 2: | what makes you beautiful |
Notes:
hi ghosts, i hope you enjoy the gossip that lucie and cordelia have to tell <3
Chapter Text
Cordelia: I like how this song is a total mess, but still so good and so nostalgic…
Lucie: Do you remember the first time you heard “What Makes You Beautiful”, or found out about the band?
Cordelia: Yes! I was in the car with my mom and Alastair, driving home, I think from the supermarket. Then it started playing on the radio, and I fell in love right there, for real. My brother went straight to change the station, because he wasn’t liking it, but the song wasn’t over and I got mad at him. If I’m not mistaken, this was a few days before you told me about the song and the boys. And you, how did you know them?
Lucie: My dads are addicted to The X Factor, in fact they watch any reality show that has people singing, and my mom ended up following their lead. So she was taking a break from work and I stopped by the office for some reason and as I was leaving she called me all excited to see that “the cute boys from The X Factor have released a music video”. And there was no other way, right? I started researching about them, their history, and watching the covers they sang on the show. I remember that I needed to know every little detail about them.
Cordelia: This is a song with lyrics that resonate with everyone, if we think about it.
Lucie: True, there will always be, I don't know, a quirk of ours that makes us shy, and that's what catches the other person's attention.
Cordelia: What's Jesse's quirk that makes him feel embarrassed when he realizes you caught him doing that?
Lucie: When he starts blowing his fringe in front of his eyes, which never helps, and he gets grumpy and blushes when he sees that I saw it too. And James?
Cordelia: Every reader does this, but he always makes the same expressions as the character in the book he's reading, and it's funny because when he realizes that I'm staring, trying not to laugh, he gets all embarrassed.

Chapter 3: | gotta be you |
Notes:
hi ghosts, i hope you enjoy the gossip that lucie and cordelia have to tell <3
Chapter Text
Cordelia: Who'd “Gotta Be You” be about?
Lucie: Anna and Ariadne. *silence* What?
Cordelia: I just don't see how this song would be about them. Okay, I'll trust that weird smile of yours that you'll be able to convince me. Go ahead.
Lucie : The song talks about a couple who broke up, because one of the parties screwed up, right? “ Girl I see it in your eyes you're disappointed; 'Cause I'm the foolish one that you anointed with your heart; I tore it apart ”. So, everyone knows that Anna and Ariadne were a couple, even though they never made their relationship official.
Cordelia : Anna was Ariadne's first experience when it came to a relationship. “ And girl what a mess I made upon your innocence; And no woman in the world deserves this ”, it fits.
Lucie: And with that, when Anna ruined what they had, because she couldn't understand the situation Ariadne was in and for several other reasons, such as jealousy, it was the definitive end point that Ari needed to not give her any more chances, even if Anna asked for it.
Cordelia: Which is interesting, ‘cause Anna doesn't look like she would beg someone to get back with her.
Lucie: Well, for what I know, Anna has only ever done this once in her life…
Cordelia: Wow. It even feels like Ariadne would be the one and only for Anna, right?
Lucie: It not only feels like, but I think it actually is. Anna was never the same after Ari, you know? She doesn’t fall in love. She can hook up with a lot of chicks, but a relationship? Never.
Cordelia: Well, this is kind of her own fault. Ari was there, with her heart open for anything and she didn’t take the chance. Isso meio que é culpa dela. A Ari estava lá, de coração aberto para qualquer coisa e ela não aproveitou a oportunidade. She made a clown out of my friend. Honestly, may she stay alone…
Lucie: Remember, Anna is your friend as well.
Cordelia: That doesn't mean I have to ignore that she acted, and sometimes still acts, like a jerk.
Lucie : At least give it to her that she feels guilty. “ Now girl I hear it in your voice and how it trembles; When you speak to me I don't resemble, who I was; You've almost had enough; And your actions speak louder than words ”. Anna always seems quite miserable when Ari mentions her or their relationship, like she knows she did wrong.
Cordelia: But she doesn’t admit it out loud, so she still keep being a jerk. I remember seeing a text she send Ari, asking if they could try one more time and make things better. I think I never felt such relief when Ari replied with a “no.”, I don’t know what I would be capable of if she had…
Lucie: I think it's adorable how overprotective you are of Ari.
Cordelia: You have no idea how much Alastair and I had to take care of her, Anna was Ari's first love, and it was just brutal the way things ended. I don't want her to go through something like that ever again.
Lucie: You know she won’t.
Cordelia: I'm glad she's now with the best Lightwood, but I'm watching you Eugenia, be careful.
Lucie: Well, now you agree that this song is theirs?
Cordelia: Argh... I hate to admit you're right.

cordelia @daisycarstairs * commenting* : Alastair's too, he just doesn't admit it to avoid making Thomas cry
alastair @alliecarstairs: now Thomas is sulking at me i'm going to kill that damn loudmouth
anna @annalight: so many better things for them to talk ab, i think i'll stay away from the internet today
Chapter 4: | one thing |
Notes:
hi ghosts, i hope you enjoy the gossip that lucie and cordelia have to tell <3
Chapter Text
Cordelia : I like to think that “One Thing” would be about Ariadne and Eugenia. Actually, from Ariadne to Eugenia.
Lucie : Like a confession? This is a really romantic song…
Cordelia : Yes, as a confession. They met after Eugenia returned to London, when Thomas took her along to one of the pizza nights Alastair and I like to host. Ari pulled me aside and asked who was, and I'll use her exact words, "that beautiful angel fallen from heaven in a pink turtleneck".
Lucie : I love how Ariadne is just “falls first AND falls harder”.
Cordelia : Right? Then she said she spent the whole night trying to look calm, but that every time Eugenia looked at her, her heart started racing.
Lucie : “ I've tried playing it cool; But, when I'm looking at you; I can't ever be brave; 'Cause you make my heart race ”...
Cordelia : After that first night, all Ari could talk about was Eugenia. She was Thomas's sister this, Thomas's sister that. One day Alastair got into a fight with Thomas because he had brought Genia to pizza night and couldn't stand hearing one of his sisters' names anymore.
Lucie : This is so Alastair.
Cordelia : I love that the chorus matches with what Ari would say about having Genia just for her, , “ So, get out, get out, get out of my head; And fall into my arms instead ”, and then saying that she had no idea what that thing was, but that there was something there, “ I don't, I don't, don't know what it is; But I need that one thing and; You've got that one thing ”.
Lucie : The “one thing”: love at first sight.
Cordelia : Perhaps the best part of the beginning of the two of them is that Eugenia didn't pay any attention to Ariadne at first. That was the most annoying part too, because Ari was desperate to have the slightest bit of her attention. She would bring up random topics of conversation, comment on something Genia was wearing, she wanted to talk and get to know her better, but you could notice that Genia was a little wary of Ari's advances.
Lucie : And it's understandable. Eugenia had just broken up with that wretched Augustus Pounceby and the one who was clearly hitting on her was the ex-girlfriend of one of her closest cousins. Imagine how her mind was…
Cordelia : Pure chaos. And I kind of understand a little. We all know what Augustus did to Eugenia, which in itself was a huge lack of character on his part. She was hurt, not wanting anything to do with any relationship. We also know about Ariadne and Anna's complicated relationship, and even today, after they supposedly got back together, they still have a lot of bad blood. Who in their right mind would want to be in the eye of the hurricane?
Lucie : Right?! That's why Eugenia started ghosting Ariadne. But we could still see how much she was enjoying Ari's attention. Even though she tried to hide it, those of us who know her well knew that she was enjoying the attention, because it was something she had never had before. And I heard what Thomas had heard in one of his sisters' conversations, when he told the boys about how Eugenia was thinking about giving Ariadne a chance to date.
Cordelia : Sometimes I get a little scared by the sources you have for this family's stories. Well, when Eugenia agreed to go out with Ariadne it was as if my friend was setting off fireworks, and they had only agreed to go for coffee together and browse through a thrift store that was open. They saw that fashion, even though they have very different styles, was something they had in common and it was very crucial for them to get to know each other even better.
Lucie : Wasn't it on that date that Ariadne gave the first gift of their “relationship”? I think it was a satin choker with silver pendants that form the phases of the moon.
Cordelia : That's it! Eugenia has always liked anything related to the moon, whether it's scientific facts or fiction and tales. I think it was really beautiful, I think it was at that moment that Eugenia really realized that she was going on a safe path with Ariadne, that she wouldn't be disappointed.
Lucie : Definitely!
Cordelia : But like every good date between couples who stay together for the rest of their lives, this one had its embarrassing moment.
Lucie : Ariadne slipping and falling into a mud puddle and taking Eugenia with her? Iconic. It's literally “ So, get out, get out, get out of my head; And fall into my arms instead ”.
