Voted Most Likely To Run Away With You

Summary:

To save the Prince, Merlin's magic is revealed and King Uther sentences him to death, to be burned on the stake. However Prince Arthur has a different plan, where he decides to run away with Merlin, forsaking his rights to the throne and to serve a self-voluntary exile beside Merlin.

This journey covers riches to rags, roads of difficulties and staying incognito from both foes and allies yet under the worst circumstances the duo finds themselves nurturing a bond stronger than friends whilst learning to embrace their flaws to adapt and overcome hurdles together.

Slight Inspiration: From the scene where Arthur tells Gwen (his literal queen) that if he wasn't the King, he would become a farmer and bring Merlin with him.

Notes:

I absolutely suck at writing my synopsis so a huge thank you for giving my story a chance! Apologies if my writing may not be fantastic but I am trying! Just a girl with loads of (Merthur) story ideas that I simply had to write them down! So much potential from the series that had me falling head over heels for these two men, it has been years...

Hopefully people are equally excited to read as I am to write so do support my upcoming Merthur collection called [The Tavern (Drunktards)] if you find this story enjoyable!

Chapter 1: Sorcerer (Prologue)

Chapter Text

“Sorcerer! Magic! He has magic!”

“Arthur! Arthur wake up! Please..."

Arthur was fading in and out but the last few things he could comprehend were these before he fell unconscious.

“Merlin. Where is Merlin?” Arthur jumped awake and began seeking for his friend.

They were out hunting without the knights, or some may call “on a date”,  just the two of them when a gang of bandits attacked them. They weren’t prepared for it and most definitely outnumbered yet the two of them fought fiercely.

There was always a thing about Merlin, he was never good with a sword yet he managed to always be unharmed in dangerous situations, like this.

However, this time he got careless and received a stab wound in his chest. “ARTHUR!” Merlin shouted as he ran up to him. Arthur didn’t know what had happened exactly but the bandits fled, leaving just the two of them alone.

“Arthur….No. No! Don’t close your eyes and look at me!” He laid in Merlin’s arms and he has never felt this much comfort before. Even in death…He found peace with Merlin.

“Merlin promise me that you take care of yourself…Make sure Camelot is cared for.” Arthur pleaded but knowing Merlin, he could trust him with anything without needing to say it.

“Shut up Arthur. You are not going to die…This I will promise you. Protect Camelot yourself clotpole.” He hissed and placed both his palms over the wound as he whispered incoherently but Arthur was too exhausted to pursue.

And that was the last he remembered.

- Arthur’s POV -

“Arthur, you don’t remember anything?” Leon asked as he glanced around the room, the other knights were doing the same which made me suspicious.

As I slowly got up from my bed, I suddenly felt something amiss…My wound. It doesn’t hurt…It was as though I never got stabbed at all. What the hell is going on?

“Is someone going to tell me what the hell is going on? Lancelot, why are you avoiding my eyes?!” The silence was killing me and when no one was speaking, it made me angrier.

“He's in the dungeons.” Lancelot finally spoke and it took me by surprise. “Why is Merlin in the dungeons? What happened?”

“When the guards found you two in the woods, they caught him using magic. Magic to heal you Arthur, if not you would already be dead.”

Magic… That sinful word rang through my head. I never knew there would be a day when I would hear ‘Merlin’ and ‘Magic’ together in the same sentence.

Sorcerer! Magic! He has magic! I recalled. “That’s not possible…Merlin does not have magic! I would know….He-” I was in denial that the person I trusted the most, the person I called friend would betray me like this…

He knew magic is illegal in Camelot yet he still practiced it anyways.

"You knew…?” I saw the expression Lancelot was carrying and instantly knew that he wasn’t surprised by the news of Merlin having magic.

He slowly nodded his head, “The moment I arrived at Camelot Arthur…..Remember when I fought the Griffin, but I only managed to kill it with the help of Merlin. He enchanted my spear and it was the only reason why I managed to defeat it.” He explained and it felt as though a bucket of ice cold water was dumped over my head.

How could I have not realized Merlin’s magic when I am the only one who was spending every day and almost every single second with Merlin!

“Who else has lied to me huh?” I let out a sigh of defeat as I looked around the room, at each and every one of my knights to see if anyone else had the same guilty expression. “I had my suspicions but never really confirmed it until today.” Gwaine stated.

HOW COULD I BE SUCH AN IDIOT TO NOT NOTICE!

Even Gwaine who had only known Merlin for less than a year figured it out. “Sire…Only Lancelot and Gaius knew. We only found out about it today.” Leon stated.

“Forget it. Bring him to my chambers, I want to see him.” I ordered but none of them moved from their positions. “We can’t. Your father has ordered Merlin to be locked up and no one is allowed to bring him out of his cell until….” Leon paused and looked very reluctant to finish his sentence.

“Until what?” I prompted desperately.

“Until his execution...Yesterday he was sentenced to burn on the stake by your father.” Gwaine finished and I felt my heart beat faster than the last time I fought in a tournament.

“Arthur please…As much as Merlin has lied to us, he is still Merlin. He saved your life…In fact, he has saved us all countless times! He is not evil! I swear on my honour and my life. Please Arthur, only you can persuade your father to change Merlin’s punishment.” Lancelot fell onto his knees as he pleaded for Merlin’s life.

“Me too princess. I trust Merlin and I don’t want to watch a friend die.” Gwaine kneeled behind him and slowly the others followed suit.

“So do I sire so please help Merlin.” Leon was the last. I knew how much they adored Merlin and treated him more than just a servant, a friend, someone they should protect. Deep down, so did I…

“I’ll see Merlin first.” I said and made my way to the dungeons.

Dungeon was as disgusting as I recalled yet I found Merlin seated on the cold hard floor with his back against the wall.

“Merlin.” I called out and he instantly ran up to the metal bars and that was when I could finally see his face clearly under the dim lights. “You are alright?” He exclaimed and looked so happy despite his situation. “They took me away before I could make sure you were alright…Did your wound heal properly?” He questioned but I got mad with him, “Can you worry about yourself first! Merlin, please you are clearly getting your priorities wrong. To answer your question, yes I am alright. I was able to walk down here on my own.”

“I thought I knew you. Guess I was wrong….You lied to me all this time.” I started as the silence was too painful to bear, and he turned away from me instantly, “But I am still the old Merlin! With or without magic. I’m sorry Arthur, I never meant to hide my magic from you.”

“So when were you planning on telling me? Lancelot and Giaus knew...Gwaine had a hunch.” I questioned.

“There were so many times that I wanted to tell you Arthur…You don’t know it. But I couldn’t bring myself to.” Merlin answered and I could feel a mix of anger and sadness well up inside of me.

“Why?” My voice softened along with my heart as I sat down in front of him. I wish I could bring him out of his cell to speak with him properly but I didn’t have the power to overwrite my father’s.

“Well, I guess I didn’t want you to ever be in the position to choose between your father and I.” He stated with a soft smile and I felt the remaining anger I had for him extinguish and be replaced by something else...It felt like love.

“You weren’t worried that you would burn but worried that I would be caught in the middle?” I looked at this foolish man in disbelief, he is really still the Merlin I knew, with or without magic.

He is my best friend.

“You idiot! You shouldn’t have openly used your magic to save me!” I complained but was almost immediately rebutted by him, “You would have died clotpole! A thank you would have sufficed.”

“I couldn’t let you die Arthur…I couldn’t bear to lose you! Especially when I had the ability to save you. Camelot needs you!”

“But…Merlin I’m going to lose you. And it is all because of me.” I’ve never felt so utterly hopeless and useless knowing that he is going to die in a few hours but I have yet to find a solution.

“Your people need you Arthur, it is alright. If anything was going to happen to you, I will always make the same decision, even if it means risking my life in order to save yours. Arthur I would take your place in death with no hesitation. I will do it over and over again.”

Merlin’s words stirred a strong avalanche of emotions in me as I broke down into tears, “But I need you.”

We stayed silent as I rested my forehead against the cold metal bars, trying my best to be as close as I could.

He reached out his hand and rested it on my chest for a few seconds before I caught a glimpse of his blue eyes flashed a starry gold then I felt my chest warm. “It has healed pretty well, shouldn’t leave a scar.” He whispered and I grabbed hold of his hand firmly. Refusing to let go because this is the first time I ever held his hand…And it is about to be our last.

“Arthur, please just listen. What’s done cannot be changed, you are alive that is all that matters now. We both know that you cannot change your father’s mind especially when it comes to sorcerers and I do not blame you for anything. Please just live on…” He moved his hand up to cup my cheek as he wiped the tears rolling down my face.

I could still remember the last time I cried was when I was mature enough to realize my mother had died. Again, I am crying over the thought of losing my best friend forever.

“Merlin you are my best friend and I think I’ve lov-”

“NO. Arthur, stop! I…Please don’t say anything anymore.” He cut me off abruptly and removed his hand from mine then leaned away from the bars. I stared at him quietly, unsure why he wouldn’t let me say it to him. I wish to confess my feelings that I’ve kept hidden for so long before he's…gone.

“Just maybe…"

"Maybe in another life where you are not the prince and if we met in better circumstances we could be something.” He walked away from me and into the darkness of his cell as those words imprinted itself into my heart. I’m not losing Merlin, not like this.

“Merlin, I’ll find a way to free you. By any means, I will free you! You will not die, I promise you that.” I got up and without wasting another second, I ran back upstairs to find my father.

It was a long shot but I have to still try and convince my father to free Merlin.

Chapter 2: Courage of Prince Arthur

Summary:

Arthur does as he promised and pleads with Uther for leniency but things turn out the way everyone had expected.

Notes:

Hello!!
Just wanted to say thank you again and I understand my chapters may be a little short so I am trying to make longer chapters now :)

I love the idea of Strength, Courage and Magic portrayed by Gwaine, Arthur and Merlin respectively so I got the inspiration to have some emphasis on Arthur's courage here.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

- Arthur’s POV -

I entered the courtroom confidently and watched all my knights gather at their positions. They knew why I was here…They knew I was fighting a losing battle…They knew I would not give up so easily until I had ensured Merlin’s safety was secured.

“Arthur! Are you alright? I heard that you were wounded badly, how are you feeling?” Father asked out of concern.

“I am feeling just fine, father. However, I am here to speak with you on a different matter. Regarding Merlin.” I bowed a little out of respect and I noticed his expression turn sour. “Right…That sorcerer. What about him?”

He spoke as if Merlin’s life wasn’t on the line, but he never did care about sorcerers.

“I’m pleading with you to let my manservant go.” I announced courageously and the courtroom instantly died down.

“What? You want me to let a sorcerer go? Arthur have you gone mad?” His voice resonated loudly across the room, yet I still stood my ground in front of him.

“But he is also my manservant. He saved my life…I was badly injured father, but he saved me. With his magic! Father please…Reduce his sentence or something…He does not deserve to die!” I begged and each step I took closer to him, he would take a step back until he reached his throne which stood high and mighty.

“You are actually begging me to release a sorcerer? Arthur, you know the laws here! Those who practice magic will burn! I cannot believe you are asking for such a foolish thing!” Uther shouted as he sat down on his throne, trying to contain his anger.

“Father please…Merlin did no harm to anyone! You can ask anyone in this castle and they would agree with me that he has always been very helpful and kind. Just exile him or ANYTHING ELSE. Just please, don’t burn him on the stake.” I tried to reason.

“Absolutely not Arthur. He must burn to teach our people a lesson that magic is bad! It must not be attempted by anyone!” Father insisted and I could feel tears burn my eyes yet I held them back.

Maybe in another life where you are not the prince and if we met in better circumstances we could be something.

I recalled desperately and finally mustering my courage, I dropped to my knees and begged him as a last resort.

“Arthur!” I heard Leon’s voice the loudest amongst the knights who were all shocked by what I’m doing. Yes, a prince should never beg…Should never be on their knees.

“Arthur Pendragon, what the hell are you doing? Are you mad?” Father exclaimed as I could sense he was about to explode with rage. “Father please. I am begging you to let Merlin go. I will do anything…I can even give up my title…My right to the throne! I don’t want them! Exile him and I…We will never come back! Please father…I’m begging you.” I clutched onto my thighs so tightly, afraid that one wrong move, tears would begin streaming down.

“HOW DARE YOU THREATEN ME! For a mere servant? Must I remind you that he has deceived everyone including you! For so many years!” He slammed his throne and instructed the guards, “My decision has been finalized. The sorcerer shall burn at first light tomorrow and bring Prince Arthur to his chambers and he is not to leave until I give the orders.”

“Gaius please take a look at him as well. It seems as though he has been enchanted with a love spell by that wicked sorcerer. Do whatever must be done to break the spell.” Uther ordered and the old physician nodded.

“He did not enchant me! He did absolutely nothing to me!” I insisted. “My feelings for Merlin were already there before I even found out about his magic.” I whispered under my breath because if I would to be heard, father would have hardened Merlin’s time in prison. In times like this, same sex relationships are illegal and frowned upon. In fact, we will face execution because of it. I know the laws like the back of my hand yet I’m breaking them one by one.

The knights joined Gaius and I in my chambers as we began planning on how else we could save Merlin. “Thank you Arthur, for trying…” Lancelot stated with a sad smile but I knew it wasn’t good enough. I still did not manage to save Merlin.

“Arthur…What you said in the courtroom was very brave but did you truly mean that? You would give up everything just so Merlin is safe?” Gaius questioned and I looked up at him and replied, “With all my heart.” Merlin is willing to die for me, giving everything up for him would be considered cheap.

“I believe you.”

“The only way is to break Merlin out before his execution.” Gwaine suggested. “And where will he go?” Leon asked because once we do break him out, Camelot guards will be after him.

“Far away as possible. I’ll go with him!” I offered. “I’m coming too.” The knights added but I shook my head, “Once you guys escape with me, your knighthood will be stripped away from you. Let this be a burden for me to carry solely…Plus, my father would not do anything to me. I don’t want to be Prince…I don’t want the throne if Merlin isn’t beside me.”

“Arthur, are you absolutely sure?” Gaius asked warily and I nodded. “Okay then, let’s start planning while Gaius and Lancelot can help pack supplies for you and Merlin.”

- Merlin’s POV -

I was simply waiting for the sun to set as I admitted to my fate when I overheard the guards talking amongst themselves. “Did you hear what the prince had done? He practically begged the king to let Merlin go!” One of them spoke and I scooted closer towards the end of the cell so that I could hear better.

“For his manservant?” The other soldier questioned in shock and I let out a slow sigh. Oh Arthur….

“Not only did he say that…He even mentioned to the king he was willing to give up his claim to the throne just so he could save Merlin! He was willing to be exiled together with him!” They continued to gossip and I completely froze.

“Excuse me.” A familiar voice echoed down the stairs and the soldiers instantly stopped their conversation and bowed to him.

“Do you mind giving Merlin and I some time alone?” Lancelot requested politely. “However, the king has said we are not supposed to leave the sorcerer alone.” One of them responded.

“Merlin. He is also the manservant of the prince and has helped us all before. Do you really think if he had any ill intentions towards Camelot, he would have done it already?” Lancelot emphasized and the two guys looked conflicted at one another. However in the end, they nodded their heads and left the dungeons.

“Lancelot! Please tell me what they were saying is not true.” I pleaded with him immediately as he approached my cell. “Merlin calm down…Arthur has the situation under control.” He didn’t answer my question.

“He is an idiot! Lancelot you guys have to convince him to not do that! He cannot give up his rights to the throne!”

“Merlin I’m sorry but I can’t help you. I can’t see a friend die for something that isn’t even your fault.” Lancelot stated and I felt anger boiling inside of me.

“Merlin, we will break you out tonight and you will leave Camelot safely.” He whispered warily and I was in disbelief, “What makes you think I want to be on the run knowing that all my friends are sacrificing their own lives for mine?”

“Merlin, please don’t be so stubborn. I have to get going now but be ready…We will come and get you tonight.” Was all he said before he left in a rush as the two guards returned back. I called for Lancelot but he didn’t turn around for a single moment.

As much as I hated the idea of them breaking me out and having their own lives on the line, I hated the idea of burning on the stake more.

- End of Merlin’s POV -

Soon, the sun fell and the kingdom fell asleep.

In the depths of the dungeons, Arthur and the knights were getting ready to free Merlin but at the same time not bring about any attention to them. Arthur knew the patrols’ schedule with the back of his hands hence he knew which gate was the safest to leave by. And to ensure the safety of his knights, he curated a plan so that the king had no reason to suspect them in aiding his escape with Merlin.

“Arthur, are you sure you want to do this alone?” Leon asked one more time. “Get Merlin out together and afterwards I’ll settle the rest. I’m not sure when I’ll see you all again but thank you.” Arthur gave him a firm squeeze on his shoulder as he took one last glance at his most trusted knights before heading down the dungeons.

Knocking out the guards was a piece of cake while Gwaine and Lancelot were quick to free Merlin.

“We don’t have much time before the alarms sound, we must go now.” Percival reminded whilst supporting Merlin out of his cell. He looked weak and pale ever since he has spent the past few days in an inhabitant condition, worst of, he had no food! Arthur felt his heart break a little as he watched his best friend lean against Percival, with absolute zero strength to stand by himself.

“Arthur…I can’t. I don’t want to do this. I don’t want you to do this!” He spoke all of a sudden and Arthur looked at him with a questioning look.

“I’ll run away on my own. Please, stay in Camelot. Don’t forsake your title for me! I am not worth it.” “We will talk about this later, Percival you carry Merlin.” Arthur ordered and everyone immediately set into action as they snuck Merlin out of the castle and out of Camelot.

When they were safely in the woods, Arthur took over the duty of supporting Merlin as it was finally the time to say goodbye.

“Arthur, go with them…Please.” Merlin tried to push the prince away but Arthur insisted on sticking beside his best friend. “We will keep in contact…Right?” Gwaine asked and Arthur nodded, “We will send some signals or messages to you all however it will not be frequent. If anything happens in Camelot, do notify me as well; however I am sure Morgana will do her job just fine. Please send my regards to her and know that we are safe.”

“Goodbye sire. Goodbye Merlin.” The knights all gave their final goodbyes and farewell hugs before rushing back to Camelot so they would not be detected.

“Arthur…I absolutely hate you.” Merlin could only muster up that much energy to say that before passing out in Arthur’s arms. “Rest well Merlin, from now on, I’ll protect you with my life.”

Refusing to let go of his best friend, he set up camp for the night and fell asleep with Merlin still in his arms. Despite the situation they were in, the prince thought it was one of the best nights of sleep he ever had.

Chapter 3: Aftermath

Notes:

Hi yalls, unfortunately this would be a short chapter.

Just a news I would love to share, I have started writing on Chapter 8 of this story, it is in slow progress but steadily getting there, I have always preferred to write a few chapters in advance so that I could update regularly (I am striving towards that).

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chaos seems to dawn upon Camelot at first light the next day as the knights and Gaius all had a façade of surprise and disappointment that Prince Arthur broke Merlin out and left.

“Sire my deepest apologies for not discovering this escape attempt as soon as possible.” Leon bowed respectfully to the king since he was the one who delivered Arthur’s letter to him.

“The two of you were supposed to keep an eye out on the prisoner!” The king yelled out angrily. “We are so sorry sire but unfortunately the prince took us by surprise and knocked us unconscious.” They kneeled and kept their heads low, afraid of the punishment to come.

“Morgana, did you know about Arthur’s intentions?” The king turned to his ward suspiciously yet the lady was calm her eyes never waivered, “I did not. Unfortunately, Arthur has deceived us all.”

When the king looked away in anger, Morgana met eyes with the knights as they shared a knowing glance and subconsciously nodded to one another.

“Find them NOW! Bring Prince Arthur back by force if you have to but ALIVE. And for the sorcerer…” Uther instructed firmly followed by a long pause as everyone in the courtroom anticipated nervously for Merlin’s verdict.

“Kill him at sight. I’ve let him live for far too long.” He spat with disgust and the knights all glanced at one another anxiously.

Lancelot got worked up and was about to stand to speak to the king but Leon firmly grasped his shoulder and held him back down.

-

After they were dismissed, the knights gathered in an empty room along with Morgana, Guinevere and Gaius.

“We can’t let them hurt Merlin!” Gwaine exclaimed.

“We can’t let the king be suspicious of us as well, if not we won’t be able to help Arthur or Merlin.” Leon, the most sensible one spoke up, his voice low yet carried a tone that made everyone listen to him.

“I’ll gather intel from the king personally and Guinevere will bring you all the news. I can’t be seen hanging around you all too much.” Morgana stated.

“My lady, it is too risky. We cannot risk your life as well.” Leon rebutted but Morgana was not having any of it as she was equally as loyal as the knights towards her friends.

“Uther won’t suspect anything if I am careful.” She said and the rest could only hope for it to be true. They will go as long as they can to ensure Arthur and Merlin’s safety. “We have to find a way to inform Arthur about the danger Merlin is in…However, we don’t know where they are.” Elyan, the shortest amongst them all yet equally as brave and strong as the rest finally spoke up.

“At the moment we can only hope they write to us soon.” Gaius sighed and the knights began pondering their next move carefully.

Right now, they played a crucial role of staying undercover to ensure all their arrest attempts were foiled so that neither Arthur nor Merlin was caught.

Meanwhile, the prince just woke up from a long needed sleep yet he found himself lying on the ground, alone.

His fight instincts kicked in, grabbing his sword off the side and began calling for his best friend. The last he saw him, Merlin was unconscious.

Now, he was nowhere in sight which frightens the prince as different scenarios flashed across his eyes.

Did Merlin get captured by Camelot knights when he was asleep? And Arthur failed to protect him once again DESPITE swearing to protect him with all his life.

“Merlin!” He continued to call for him as he looked around frantically.

“Arthur?” The moment he heard that familiar voice, his heart raced even faster for a whole different reason.

“Where the hell were you?” Arthur confronted in anger but Merlin just eyed him down, “Did you wake up on the wrong side? I went to get us breakfast?”

He showed the prince the fishes he caught rendering Arthur speechless.

“You’ll probably be dead if it wasn’t for me.” Merlin teased as he walked past him to grab the firewood that he had apparently collected already.

Merlin must have woken up very early to get so many things done…

“You always say that but I never believed it. Until now, I can finally understand.” I confessed and Merlin flashed me a smile before continuing his work with cleaning the fish.

“How…How is this possible?” Arthur stuttered like an idiot as he sat down beside his manservant, not even bothering to lend him a hand.

“What is? You being a useless sot? Because oh there are so many possible ways.” He fired back casually yet the prince took no mind to his manservant’s sarcasm as he was long used to it.

“The previous night you were barely surviving…How is it possible that you are...As if you are healed?” Arthur questioned curiously.

“I guess it is my magic…I felt as if I was healing last night. It is also why I am able to survive all the injuries I sustained with you guys. Remember that time when I was hurt by a mace and Lancelot was bringing me back to Camelot? I actually managed to fully recover even before arriving back at Camelot…It was my magic.” Merlin explained and it felt as though it opened a whole different world for Arthur to explore on his own terms.

It still felt uncomfortable for the prince to be talking so openly about magic but he was still learning.

Anyways, he did just exile himself to be with his best friend who happens to also be a sorcerer.

When Arthur noticed Merlin was trying to light a spark to start the fire, he curiously asked again, ”Why don’t you just use your magic?”

And Merlin paused for a second before his eyes flashed a second of gold before the firewood began burning strong and bright.

Arthur was in awe that he simply couldn’t take his eyes off the man in front of him and that he almost missed what Merlin said next, “Habit I suppose. It feels weird to use my magic in front of you. But it is something both you and I have to get use to now.”

“Merlin, you do know you don’t have to do these anymore. Right?” Arthur spoke in a calm manner yet Merlin continued with his chores as a manservant of his prince.

“Merlin…In other words, you are no longer my manservant nor am I your prince…In fact, I am no more a prince. I’m just a simple man.” Arthur continued, which made Merlin choke back tears that he was trying to hold back for too long, “This is the least I can do since you risked everything for me. Well, someone has to do these chores anyways.”

“Merlin, can you look at me for a second?” Arthur sounded relaxed yet he couldn’t let his guard down entirely, they were in the middle of the woods, far away from Camelot’s protection. All that was left to defend them was Excalibur and Merlin’s magic.

“Merlin, please!” He took two long strides and reached Merlin with ease, his calloused hands cupping Merlin’s cheeks, forcing the man to look at him.

That was when Arthur finally got a full view of Merlin’s red eyes, brimming with tears.

“This…Isn’t your fault. I made the decision to give up my title and be with you…Don’t blame yourself for my own decisions!” Arthur consoled as he rested his forehead against Merlin’s.

However the sweet moment had to be shortened when Merlin was cut off by a shout, “THERE’S SMOKE COMING FROM THAT SIDE!”

Instantly, the two pulled away from each other and with a flash of Merlin’s eyes, their items were packed and ready to leave, as if they were never here.

But, it was too late when the first soldier appeared and unfortunately, they were wearing Camelot’s colours with its sigil on their armour.

- Arthur’s POV -

“Prince Arthur, under the orders of King Uther, we are to bring you back to Camelot by all means. As for the sorcerer, you are to be killed.”

Was all the soldier said before charging to Merlin with his sword raised.

My heart almost leapt out of my chest after hearing how ruthless father had ordered but I couldn’t spare another second to think as my reflexes kicked in and threw myself in front of Merlin and blocked the soldier’s attack with Excalibur.

“No one is to harm Merlin! Stand down…I order all to stand down right this instant!” I commanded but more soldiers began surrounding us, making it difficult for us to escape.

“Sorry Prince Arthur but we were ordered by the King to kill the sorcerer and bring you back.” Another soldier stated which made me curse under my breath.

Just then, I noticed Percival and Gwaine standing at the back, not participating in the fight which I greatly appreciated.

They wanted to help Merlin and I, but I knew deep down, they couldn’t. If they were caught siding with us, they would be punished gravely as well so to prevent them from being implicated, I shook my head silently.

“Arthur, please just stop this.” Merlin stuttered behind me and it only made my blood boil, “Merlin, if you are not going to say anything useful, shut up.”

Suddenly, another shout could be heard from Gwaine and Percival, Gwaine yelled in fear, “SNAKES!”

Catching the attention of everyone, the soldiers turned their attention to the back while Merlin took this opportunity, he mumbled something incoherent under his breath while extending his hands out, yet I was close enough to hear it then his eyes flashed gold and the next moment all the soldiers flew to the ground with their swords flying even further from their reach.

I couldn’t think more and grabbed Merlin’s hand and we made a run for it.

-

We escaped to safety and after confirming that we have lost the soldiers, we stopped by a river to take a breather.

“Merlin, I never thought I would be saying this but I am actually glad that you used your magic to save us.” I was glad that Merlin didn’t give himself up to save me, but he saved us both instead.

“Arthur, I'm sorry for saying that. I was foolish.” He apologized but I shook my head and assured him that it was alright, all is over and importantly, we were safe again.

I didn’t realize it myself but I was still holding onto Merlin’s hand and it seems that he did not notice it either, as if it was something normal to the both of us.

“MERLIN! MERLIN!” Someone shouted from a distance and I quickly tightened my grip on him and pulled him closer to me.

“Gwaine? Percival!” I was genuinely surprised to see them as I slowly allowed myself to relax.

“How did you know where we went?” I asked suspiciously and Gwaine beamed brightly, “Merlin sent us a message just now in the midst of battle.” I turned to look at Merlin who was smiling back and I asked, “When? How?”

“With my magic I sent them a message only they could hear. I figured we needed to update one another so we should meet before we left.” Merlin replied and I nodded slowly, not knowing what to say. I know now that Merlin has magic but I don’t think I do know the powers he wields and that somehow makes me feel insecure.

Quietly, I let go of his hand as Gwaine approached him first for a hug. “Oh Merlin!”

“You two look like you need a shower.” He added after breaking the hug and I rolled my eyes, “We are exiled, not on vacation!” “As cranky as usual princess…I miss you as well.” He pulled me into a hug too which I gladly accepted.

“Updates?” I prompted because it was a main concern at the moment.

“Right…Sorry. Well, what the soldiers said was true. Uther has ordered for Merlin to be killed on sight and you to be brought to Camelot alive.” Gwaine began and it made me angry.

How could our outcomes be so different when we ran together…He knows damn well that he would never take me back alive if Merlin is dead. I wouldn’t allow that.

“Leon has taken over the training of the knights and Lancelot has been…Around. He has been helping wherever he could. In fact, he was supposed to be here today but knowing that he needs to kill you at sight, he refused.” Percival took over and I saw Merlin’s expression drop drastically and I just wish I knew a way to comfort him.

“Here, take these. You will need them.” Percival took out a large pouch filled with money and two black daggers that I easily recognize belonged in the weaponry of Camelot.

“You may have magic but you should still have something to defend yourself with.” He passed them to Merlin who gladly accepted them. He may be a big guy but he had one of the softest hearts especially towards his friends.

“Thank you Percival but I was never a man who kills. I doubt I’ll ever need these.” Merlin passed the daggers to me but I handed him one back, “Percival is right. What if I wasn’t there to protect you or your magic was compromised? You would need something to defend yourself. Or…Perhaps, you don’t know how to use them?”

“Shut it.” He shot me a glare which meant I was only right.

“Not to worry, Arthur will teach you.” Gwaine chipped in.

The reunion couldn’t last long especially when there may be more Camelot soldiers coming after them.

They bid their farewells and went their separate ways, Gwaine and Percival back to Camelot while Merlin and Arthur walked in the direction of their new future.

By nightfall, they arrived at a village in Carmarthen and settled themselves in an inn. Finally getting to bathe felt like a bliss for both Merlin and Arthur.

Their new life could only be looking up from now. In a new place where nobody knew who they were and the freedom to do whatever they wanted, could anything be less perfect?

That night Merlin began writing letters for Gaius, Gwen and Lancelot respectively to assure them they were alright and they need not worry too much before proceeding to enchant the letters afterwards so that no one could intercept these letters, and even if they did, the contents could only be read by the receiver themselves.

“Merlin, I have a question and I was hoping you could enlighten me?” Arthur couldn’t help but curiosity got the best of him after realizing what magic Merlin was conjuring which yet again, blew his mind.

He really did not know the extent of Merlin’s magic at all.

“I don’t think I have ever known about your magic…How did you even…I mean why? Why turn to magic?” Arthur asked after Merlin gave him a nod of approval. “I don’t think you know the origin of my magic. Since we are already in this situation, I am more than happy to tell you the whole story, however you must be open to it.” Merlin said calmly as he sealed the last letter for Lancelot.

He followed Arthur towards his bed on the left side of the tiny room and they sat down together. “If this is going to take awhile, I suggest we get comfortable.” Arthur stated and Merlin looked surprised for a second however, he recovered quickly and simply removed his boots, swung his legs onto Arthur’s bed.

“You can lay down if you wish. I’ll just sit.” Merlin spoke awkwardly.

They have slept side by side on forest floors numerous times yet they had never shared a bed, but Arthur was going to end that today.

“Don’t be silly Merlin. If you are going to talk all night, by all means just share the bed with me.” He pulled Merlin down with him and they laid next to each other, shoulder to shoulder and if they would to turn their heads, their faces would literally be inches away. Don’t be mistaken, the bed was spacious, enough for the both of them yet they wished to be close.

“I never practiced or learned magic…I was born with it. I knew how to use magic even before I knew how to talk…How to walk. I questioned myself why I was like this, in fact I hated myself for having magic but I couldn’t rid myself of this power. Back in Ealdor, only Will and my mother knew of my magic, however one day I was being bullied by some kid and out of anger, I lashed my magic at him. I couldn’t control it which made me hurt someone unintentionally. I felt so guilty after and everyone started calling me a monster. Only Will believed in me, he believed that my magic was given to me because I was good and one day, I will use it to help others.” Merlin began, his voice was soft and soothing for a traumatic experience he was telling.

“Well Will is right on that part. You have been using your magic for good only, don’t ever doubt yourself about it.” Arthur responded softly, his voice carried a subtle hint of fatigue yet he wished to listen to Merlin’s story.

Back in Camelot, they would never have such an opportunity for either one to talk about their life, because of their duties as Prince and Servant or the constant kingdom emergencies; however at this moment, it felt as though they had all the time in the world.

“You speak as if you knew I had magic for a long time.” Merlin teased and Arthur rolled his eyes. “Have you ever found out why you were born with magic? I mean…I never heard of anyone being born with magic. I only knew people practicing it.” Arthur questioned genuinely, bringing the both of them back to the topic.

“The druids called me Emrys. As it may be hard to believe but it is an apparent fact that I am the greatest warlock to ever walk the earth which is why the druids look up to me.” Merlin responded casually and as he expected, Arthur was shooting him weird glances. He knew Arthur like the back of his hand, the Prince simply does not believe his servant, especially Merlin, his most useless, clumsy, a fool of a manservant, is capable of greater things other than polishing his armour and cleaning his chambers.

"You?" His eyes said it all, earning an eye roll from Merlin.

“Then why come to Camelot? Knowing that sorcerers are not welcomed here. You risked your life.”

“Because my mother thought Gaius would have the answers. In fact, he could teach me how to control my powers. I wanted to stay anonymous as much as possible but, unfortunately, I saved some royal’s arse and became his manservant.” Merlin let out a sarcastic sigh, earning himself an elbow from Arthur. He groaned in pain and struck Arthur back but the prince only chuckled, “I guess we are even now.”

“Have you ever wondered why only you had powers? I mean…Your mother doesn’t have magic….Unless-” Merlin immediately cut him off before Arthur could finish his sentence, “Don’t be ridiculous. My mother doesn’t. I have magic because of my father…”

“Your father? You knew him? Why didn’t you tell me, I would have helped you find him!” Arthur shot up in urgency but Merlin calmed him back down, “Quiet down you idiot. You did help me find him…My father was Balinor, the last dragonlord.”

-

- Arthur’s POV -

“You did help me find him…My father was Balinor, the last dragonlord.”

My heart began beating wildly in my chest as I replayed Merlin’s words on repeat in my head, afraid that I was mishearing him. “You knew…When we were searching for him?” I asked cautiously as I desperately needed to know more.

“Yes, I did. Gaius informed me as we were leaving.” It took Merlin a moment before answering, his voice was solemn as he avoided my eyes.

“Merlin…Oh my god, I am so sorry. I never knew…I’m truly sorry. You…I…You saw him die right before your very eyes yet I never consoled you.” I felt a huge wave of guilt wash over me as I got out of bed, placing my face in my palms as I cursed myself.

“Arthur, it wasn't your fault. You didn’t know!”

“I am truly sorry for the way I behaved…I wish I can get you to forgive me.” I couldn’t bring myself to even look at him. I could still vividly remember that day, the way I reacted after Balinor died in Merlin’s arms.

I was so mad that the last dragonlord died before we could subdue the last dragon terrorizing Camelot that I never realized Merlin was mourning.

“Arthur, it wasn't your fault! You were worried for Camelot’s safety, as you should. You shouldn’t blame yourself for something I didn’t tell you. Plus, I am alright now.” I felt the bed shift behind me and Merlin scooted closer towards me, his hand rested on my shoulder as a source of comfort but it only made me guiltier.

“You were always there for me but I never was when it comes to you.” I sighed but suddenly, Merlin held my face softly as he made me look at him.

“Arthur, you are here with me. You gave up your whole life to be with me…I could never ask for more. Please get some rest.”

One look of his pleading eyes softened my heart tremendously as I leaned back down on the bed with Merlin, one of his hands was resting on my chest, over my heart to be exact and I didn’t mind at all. I never liked sharing my bed with anyone or having somebody this close to me but now, everything didn’t matter. In fact, I am glad Merlin is with me, the closer he is, the better.

"So it was you who stopped the dragon at the end, am I right?" I asked softly. "Yes."

“We have a long day tomorrow, let’s rest for the night.” I mumbled after a long second of silence and Merlin nodded, making a move to get out of bed but I grasped his hand on my chest. “Where are you going?”

“To my bed?” He pointed to the empty bed beside mine but I shook my head, “Please don’t go. Sleep beside me tonight.”

“Arthur…I- Okay.” He let out a sigh in defeat before settling back down.

The last thought that crossed my mind just before I slipped into my dreams was, Merlin is the last dragonlord.

My hand was holding his as we allowed fatigue to take over as we fell asleep together.

- End of Arthur’s POV -

*** ***

The sun had long risen when Merlin and Arthur finally woken up. It seems they were so battered from the previous day that they only woke up in the late afternoon.

Arthur was the first to rouse awake, feeling a sense of unfamiliarity with someone sleeping beside him yet it was the most comforting feeling ever because that person was Merlin. He may be the Prince of Camelot, was the Prince …who had slept on a soft and warm bed every night of his life could never seem to compare to this half alright bed with Merlin.

He wished…He longed for someone who he truly loves and loves him back not because he is the Prince of Camelot but he is Arthur… Just Arthur

He stared at the man sleeping soundly beside him, his morning hair ruffled messily yet pleasant, his head was resting on Arthur’s shoulder, hands draped relaxingly across Arthur’s chest.

Arthur wasn’t sure if it was because he was being almost crushed by Merlin making it hard to breathe or because he was in close proximity with the man he has feelings for. Definitely the latter .

He wished to spend more time just looking at Merlin’s angelic features as he slept but reality seems to be constantly chasing after them when Merlin woke up. “Sorry…” He muttered when he realized he was literally lying on Arthur, he instantly got up.

“Shit What time is it? We have a long day ahead…” Merlin cursed as he fumbled for his boots, the drowsiness slowly slipping away and his mind was readily clearing up. “What are we even going to do?” Arthur questioned, feeling slightly amused.

The last he remembered, they had all the time in the world now, he had no duties to attend to, he didn’t need to be constantly ready for any emergencies or council meetings, he was practically a free man!

“We have to find jobs! We can’t be living here forever…If we are truly on our own, we need our own place to call home. We need money as well, what Gwaine and Perceival gave us won’t last us forever.” Merlin commented and Arthur groaned in annoyance because what he said was difficult but true.

All his life, he was a Prince…He didn’t have to work. He was born and raised in the castle as well.

However, now things are different and Arthur is motivated to change and adapt.

“Have you been to Carmarthen Merlin?” Arthur got up with a smile knowing damn well his manservant has never got the chance to explore the world like he did, but he is about to.

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU LOST THEM?” Uther slammed his hand on the council table after the knight reported everything to the King.

The room fell into a dead silence as Leon was standing beside Gwaine and Percival who had just returned from their patrol.

“Apologies, sire but that warlock had some tricks up his sleeve! He conjured snakes out to attack us and they escaped.” He continued and Gwaine wanted to speak up but was held back by Leon and Percival. How dare he taint Merlin’s name even further with lies…The snakes were all a lie created by Gwaine and Perceival, why must Merlin pay the price of it?

“Bunch of fools! You can’t even bring the Prince back?” He shouted and the knight slowly moved back.

“Leon! You are Arthur’s first knight which means you two are close! Has he tried to contact you?” Uther asked but sounded more like an interrogation.

“No sire…The prince and I may be close but he hasn’t reached out to me.” Leon lowered his head as a sign of regret.

“You better not be lying to me.” Uther added and Leon tensed up but he carefully answered, “I wouldn’t sire. My loyalties lie with you, my king.” Uther watched the knight closely before waving his hand off, “Forget it.”

What Leon said wasn’t completely a lie because Arthur has never reached out to him, however he knew where Arthur and Merlin escaped to.

Based on the report given by Percival and Gwaine to him alone, they were headed in the direction of Carmarthen. He could still remember the last time he was in that lovely town when he accompanied Arthur to run errands, it was small but beautiful, filled with lovely people and the most spectacular scenery. If Merlin and Arthur did end up there, he would be happy for them. But now, he could not be sure.

“Sire, would you want us to spread the word out that we are looking for a sorcerer and Prince Arthur?” The knight who was previously reporting to Uther, spoke up again.

“NO! No one is to speak of a word to ANYONE outside of Camelot walls, have I made myself clear? If our enemies found out we are left with no Prince…They would take it as an opportunity to attack. We must proceed cautiously…Whoever spreads a single word of this out of these four walls, will be thrown into the dungeons.” The king ordered sternly and everyone bowed in an understanding manner.

After the council was dismissed, Leon, Gwaine and Percival immediately went to find the others.

They have yet to be informed about the encounter in the forests and they would be delighted to find out where they were heading, somewhere safe.

They gathered in Gaius' workshop as Gwaine shared the information with the rest. Faces of relief swept across the room and Gwen let out a soft sob in Lancelot’s arms. She was one of Merlin’s closest friends in Camelot so naturally she felt the most emotional knowing her friends were alright.

“What is going to happen next? They can’t hide there forever. Uther wants them found! Uther wants Merlin dead!” Morgana sighed worriedly. She was the closest to Uther at this point of time so she knew council news firsthand and was responsible to deliver it to the rest.

“We have to first find a way to communicate with them effectively. Letters will take forever to reach one another and may have a chance to be intercepted. We have to be cautious about this.” Lancelot warned which everyone agreed immediately.

“I’ll look out for anything but right now, we can’t really do anything else. Only thing that can actually change is when Arthur is king.” Gaius said and the whole room went silent again.

Chapter Text

*** ***

Carmarthen was as beautiful as Arthur’s last visit here.

The town was located in between mountains, covered with fields of grass and flowers. It was a lively place in the day and serene when the sunsets, filled with friendly villagers, all eagerly trying to welcome new travelers. The best part, magic wasn’t illegal.

It had been many years since he had the chance to come but even longer since he last explored an area all on his own will. Not to mention, he was here with Merlin. In this place, no one knew Merlin as the prince’s manservant or sorcerer and no one knew Arthur as the prince of Camelot. It was enough.

Arthur’s eyes travelled around the town as he took in the beautiful sights of its people and environment before turning his attention to the man beside him, almost brimming with excitement like a child… Subconsciously, he had his hand gripped around Merlin’s forearm to ensure he didn’t wander off and get lost.

He was protective like that, as much as he would love for Merlin to see more of what Carmarthen and its people had to offer, he also didn’t want to be apart from him. They were in foreign land afterall.

Just then, an old man caught Merlin’s attention when his eyes flashed a second of gold and a beautiful, mystical butterfly fluttered out of his enclosed palm. He was showing off some magic tricks (with literal magic) to the village children.

Everyone applauded for him, including Merlin who had stopped in his tracks to spectate.

It wasn’t a grand trick, Arthur was sure Merlin could do better, yet the sight of being able to use magic openly without consequences interested Merlin.

“Do something else please!” A child exclaimed in excitement which was followed by the cheers of the other children. “What would you like to see sweetheart?” The old man asked kindly.

“Hm…A dragon?” The boy asked and Merlin exchanged a knowing glance with Arthur.

“I am sorry boy but I have never met a dragon in my life…I wouldn’t be able to show you.” The old man apologized but Merlin being Merlin decided to step in to help.

“May I try? I have seen a handful of dragons in my life.” Merlin smiled sincerely and within a second, the children all surrounded him.

The old man gave a nod and smiled thankfully while Arthur watched the scene play out in front of him.

With a flash of gold from Merlin’s eyes, a small red dragon appeared, flapping its wings softly as it levitated on Merlin’s palm. Arthur’s chest constricted, his heart racing instantly while he watched Merlin interact with the children. He understood the dragon and why Merlin would choose that exact dragon to appear…

It was in the colour and representation of Camelot. Burning red…

Gasps of awes could be heard as the children each tried to hold their hands out to touch it yet Merlin was quicker, with a move of his hand, the dragon began flying around the children.

This attracted the attention of even passers-by who were in awe with Merlin’s dragon.

Flapping its wings with ease, it maneuvered its way around majestically until it decided to seat itself on Arthur’s broad shoulders. He froze when he felt Merlin’s magic so close to him, his eyes darting between the dragon that is currently spitting tiny fire sparks out and Merlin’s playful demeanor.

“Merlin!” Arthur shot him a glare when he wouldn’t stop laughing his arse off.

“It looks so pretty!” A girl commented however all he could look at now was how happy Merlin looked now. He was at ease and openly using his magic…He was free. He didn’t need to hide his true self anymore because finally, being who he was had no consequences.

“Yes he is.” It slipped Arthur’s mouth but before he could catch on, Merlin’s cheeks flushed lightly when he knew the prince was speaking of him and not the dragon. But the children didn’t need to know.

-

After the crowd dispersed and when Merlin had exchanged pleasantries with the old man, Arthur pulled Merlin along to continue their exploration. Together, side by side, they went on to see the outskirts of Carmarthen after they reached the end of town.

Throughout their journey, it was filled with usual banter between the two best friends and the numerous times Merlin tugs on Arthur fondly as he pointed out things that interest him.

“Arthur, look over there!” “Wow, could you believe that!” “Over there!” “That was unbelievable! Have you seen that before?”

If they were back in Camelot with heavy responsibilities and duties weighing heavily on their shoulders, Arthur would have shot Merlin down instantaneously and rushed him through the town. But now, they weren’t.

In fact, they had all the time in the world, so as Arthur would like to think . He wouldn’t have it any other way.

- Arthur’s POV -

“Merlin, why don’t we find some place to get something to eat…I remember we woke up late today, entirely missing breakfast.” I felt a slight grumble from my stomach hours ago but I couldn’t bear to be the one to break Merlin’s momentum of exploring.

However, my stomach was slowly making it known that it was time for myself to consume something or I may die from starvation. “Of course sire, we couldn’t possibly have your pampered arse starve on our first day!” Merlin responded sarcastically but without responding to his remark, I dragged him into the next tavern we saw.

Merlin ordered as usual for the both of us and paid with gold.

I noticed the look on his face and knew instantly that something was bothering him. Watching his movements, I realized what was worrying him as he kept the pouch of gold securely in his jacket.

“Merlin, you do know you can talk to me.” I muttered in a ‘as a matter of fact’ tone then he looked up to meet my eyes.

“It’s just we need money. We have to find jobs…I mean I could work any job but you?” He responded whilst biting his bottom lip out of habit whenever he was feeling nervous. A habit that I have taken note of…

“Nonsense…I can find a job as well.” Feeling slightly offended, I took a mouthful of my cup of mead which was served to us earlier. “I could teach…fighting. Yes, fighting. I can teach people how to wield a sword.”

“Arthur you don’t have to. I am the one who placed us in this situation so maybe- Plus, this is a big change for you so I understand that you need more time than I do to get used to it.” Merlin tried to explain but I got the message from the moment he sputtered the first sentence from his ridiculous mouth.

“I am not a girl! I do not need to be taken care of! I can very well find a job, in fact let’s start tomorrow!” I defended in anger, glaring holes into the infuriating prat seated in front of me. Then, our food arrived and we fell silent and began eating.

*** ***

Unknowingly, Merlin and I each seemed to understand one another as we ordered a few more tankards of mead. Downing the alcohol swiftly along with our worries.

Just tonight, let us forget everything. Forget why we were even here in the first place. I was no Prince of Camelot, the future King nor was Merlin my manservant.

“Arthur.” My name sounded beautiful coming from Merlin. It might have been the alcohol messing with my brain or just Merlin, pulling me out of the trance when I realized I was staring at him for too long.

A second later, I was hit with realization after noticing Merlin’s red neckerchief had disappeared, exposing his flawless and pale neck that even the sun rarely saw. He is so fucking beautiful.

My hands shook as I slowly extended towards him, just a soft touch, a mere second would do…I-

Suddenly, a drunken man stumbled into Merlin from behind, ramming him into our table. It broke the moment thoroughly, my knight reflexes kicked in so that I could protect Merlin.

I grasped for my sword to realize I didn’t have it. I left Excalibur in the inn after Merlin convinced me that ‘No common folk would walk around with a sword.’

“Watch it!” The man slurred, pushing himself away from Merlin but I was already standing up, levelling with him.

“Arthur…” Merlin’s voice was low and cautious, signaling for me to sit back down. “You look familiar…” That man pointed to me in his drunken state, that was when I caught a glimpse of Camelot’s crest on his dagger sitting at his belt, I finally sat down and lowered my head.

What is a lowly knight doing here in Carmarthen out of all places and getting drunk in the exact same tavern!

“You look like a prince…Like…Like Prince of Camelot.” He announced aloud that the whole tavern overheard.

Finally, the crowd fell silent and all eyes were on Merlin and I. I knew they didn’t appreciate royalties especially from Camelot…A place that has sworn to hate magic.

“That’s very kind of you. Such flattery…I don’t hear often.” I lied through my teeth but the drunken knight carried on his mumble, “Right…That’s true. The prince wouldn’t be hanging out in places like these…He is exi-” He was cut off abruptly just as Merlin’s eyes faded back to his original blue, then collapsing onto the ground into a slumber.

“Unfortunately your drunken stupidity may have caused me a hassle…This man here may be over the moon now that someone had said he resembled a prince. Poor me has to now pull his head out of his own arse.” Merlin added smoothly but I didn’t know whether I should feel offended or relieved by his quick thinking.

The tavern soon resumed its original activity after we dodged a close call but we left immediately after.

Returning back to our inn, Merlin requested for a bath to be prepared for us while he sat down to recover from the incident in the tavern.

“Merlin.” I called for him but he wasn’t responding so I ended up taking his hands into mine, pulling him closer to me. His hands were surprisingly soft despite all the chores he had done throughout the years. Compared to my calloused hands though, his hands were freezing, entirely opposite from how warm mine was.

Maybe that’s why people always said how well fitted we were to be side by side. Like two sides of the same coin, despite our differences we are fundamentally intertwined and essential to each other.

“I thought we were going to get caught.” A silent sob escaped from Merlin as he allowed himself to cry. His breathing was ragged as he tried so hard to contain his sobs, he feared for my life and his then…Afraid that it would be the end of us.

With my left hand still holding firmly onto his hands, I rested my right on the back of his neck, stroking softly in a comforting manner. “It’s over now…We are safe. You and Me…We are both safe.”

“Nothing is going to happen I assure you Merlin. I will protect you…Protect us with my life.”

“As do I.” Feeling Merlin’s words like a silent oath to one another, my heart raced madly in my chest. The proximity of us wasn’t helping either when I felt his breath closely against my lips, if I inched forward now, my lips would touch his.

However, before I could make a move, Merlin moved away while wiping away unshed tears in his eyes leaving me dumbfounded.

“You can bathe first, I still have to send my letters out.” He muttered as he got to his feet. “Yeah…Letters of course.” I followed him a second after but the opposite direction to where the bath was located.

“Will you be writing, Arthur?” Merlin asked just before I went inside. Taking a moment to think who I would even write to then nodded when Morgana and Leon came first in mind. “I’ll write.”

*** ***

In Camelot, the tension was high when everyone was on high alert afraid of any slip-ups. It has been over a fortnight since Prince Arthur and his manservant Merlin have exiled themselves.

King Uther especially was constantly in an irritant mood, easily agitated when something big or small did not go his way.

He wanted his son back! He wanted the Crown Prince of Camelot back but no one has brought any good news to him yet.

“Morgana, what is the meaning of this?” He spat in anger when he found his ward leisurely enjoying her breakfast, striking a lighthearted conversation with her servant, Guinevere early in the morning while he did not even have the appetite to eat.

“Breakfast sire. What else could this scene possibly be?” Morgana replied, which angered King Uther even further, “How dare you act so gleeful when Arthur has run away with that damn sorcerer! No one has brought back any news of them for days!”

“Doesn’t mean you are having a bad day means everyone has to. I for one shall not be influenced by you. And let me remind you Uther that Arthur did not run away! YOU exiled him along with his manservant.” She exclaimed with the same anger shown from the king.

“HE IS A SORCERER!” Uther bellowed but Morgana was putting up a fight as she slammed the silverware onto the table, standing up to glare down at the man who had lost all respect from her a long time ago.

“MERLIN IS A FRIEND. He is Arthur’s friend and he is MY friend. I shall not allow you to slander him any longer because of your stone-age prejudice!”

“Gwen come! We will take our lovely morning elsewhere.” Morgana’s voice was firm yet cold towards that man before stalking away, leaving the king alone in his own fury.

-

When Morgana and Gwen returned to the safety of Morgana’s chambers, she locked the doors and turned to Gwen with hopes clearly seen on her face, “Any news of Merlin and Arthur?”

“My lady unfortunately there is not…” Gwen lowered her head in response.

Days, she has spent wandering around the marketplace in hopes of hearing any rumours of Merlin and Arthur but there was none.

The villagers didn’t know that their crown prince was missing but only Merlin had escaped, everyone working at the castle all kept their lips sealed tight after the heavy warning from Uther.

It was as if they had completely vanished from the face of the earth; however, it was a good thing. It meant even the king could not find them.

“My goodness…They said they would write! I am starting to get worried, what if they got caught? What if they are in trouble?” Morgana’s thoughts were terrifying her but before it could speculate further, Gwen intervened firmly, “Merlin is with Arthur. I am sure they are in each other’s good hands.” “Yes…Yes, you are right.”

“My lady, I will excuse myself first as I need to pick up some items from the market.” Gwen curtsy, leaving only after ensuring lady Morgana has calmed down.

It was not unusual for Lady Morgana’s maid to exit the castle alone to run some errands in town. In fact, being Lady Morgana’s maid allowed her more access in this situation.

Following a list, she went on to pick up some items for Gaius on her way while completing her errands for Morgana.

Missing Merlin meant Gwen naturally became a bit busier as she took up the role of Gaius’s assistant, alternating with whichever knight who was free that day.

They continued to be close however under the king’s careful watch, they had to be extremely cautious.

- Guinevere’s POV -

“Gaius has brewed another bottle for you.” I was delivering a potion that Gaius had owed this patient who accepted it with a grateful smile before closing her doors.

Taking a deep breath, I looked down at my list to ensure I had completed all tasks and picked up the necessary things before I head back to the castle.

Suddenly, a man halted in front of me. I eyed him suspiciously as he was dressed plainly yet his bag looked heavy, not a usual villager would seem. “Are you perhaps Lady Guinevere?” He sounded polite yet his question caused my guard to be up.

How did this man know my name? What does he want from me?

My heart was thumping loudly in my chest as I clutched my basket of items tightly close to me, “Yes. Can I help you?”

Instead of replying, he pulled out a stack of neatly folded parchment and handed it to me, “I was tasked to deliver these to you and your acquaintances.”

I stared at him with skepticism but my curiosity had peaked as why would someone want to deliver parchment to me?

Names were written in the ever so familiar handwriting on each individual parchment and realization dawned upon me. My eyes widened in shock as I looked up to question that man but before I knew it, he was gone

It was just me standing alone in the town square.

I flipped through the letters, my fingers subconsciously tracing the outline of each of our names as my mind began to race with thoughts of Arthur and Merlin. They are safe!

Stuffing these letters deep into my basket and out of people’s sight, I ran back to the castle excitedly.

“MY LADY YOUR PRESENCE IS NEEDED AT GAIUS’S.” I exclaimed in excitement as I ran to gather the knights as well.

Finding them was easy as they followed a schedule, lucky for me, they weren’t on patrol yet. After everyone had hastily gathered at Gaius’s, I dropped my basket and pulled out the parchments, placing them in front of us.

“You called us here to show us you got us parchments? With our names on it…” Gwaine eyed me in confusion but I was feeling out of breath from running here that I found it difficult to find words to speak.

“Those are Merlin and Arthur’s handwriting.” Lancelot explained, he seemed to be the only one who was on the same page as me, turning to smile at me.

"WHAT?” Leon gasped aloud as he frantically picked up the first letter of the stack which also happens to have Morgana’s name on it.

“Are you sure Lady Guinevere? These parchments are blank…” Leon flipped it around to show us the empty parchment.

My jaw dropped in disbelief, frantically picking another letter to Gwaine and it was empty too!

“That’s not possible…It was given to me by a man who looked weird. He felt different…And when I wanted to ask him questions on where he came from or who gave them these, he simply disappeared into thin air. As if he never existed! You have to believe me!” I explained urgently, glancing at Gaius and Lancelot who stood beside me, pleading for any of them to believe me.

“I believe you Gwen because I can see the writing on the parchment Leon is holding.” Morgana finally spoke up and took the piece of parchment from the first knight.

“Wha-” Leon was cut off by my brother, Elyan who seemed to realize the situation, “Grab the parchments with your name on it!” Very quickly, everyone did as Elyan said, swapping letters or swopping for their right letters on the table.

Then as if the puzzle pieces fell into place, black ink started appearing on the parchment I was holding on and it soon crafted into words then sentences.

“Oh my god.” It was the very first time I ever witnessed magic happening right before my eyes and I was in awe.

“Oh my…” The knights were in shock as well. “Merlin enchanted these letters so only the receiver could read its contents…That was why we couldn’t read each other’s letters.” Gaius explained with his tone lowered.

Soon, the room fell silent as we each read our own individual letters. Tears began to fall as I got through the letter from Merlin.

My heart ached tremendously for my best friend and all I could hope now was he was doing well and not suffering in foreign land.

Dear Gwen,

I hope this letter finds you well. If you are able to read this means it has been received by the correct person. I am doing well and so is Arthur, he is still capable of annoying me thus I assure you we are alright.

I miss you.

Hope we will get a chance to meet again.

Your best friend,

Merlin

“Oh Merlin!” A sob escaped from me as I was instantly pulled into a tight embrace by Lancelot. “They are alright.”

“Yes, but neither Merlin nor Arthur stated how we were supposed to communicate with them…Or even stated where they were.” Gwaine groaned in annoyance once he rolled up his letter and kept it safe.

“It is for the best that we do not know where they are Gwaine. Now, we have to ensure they continue to stay hidden and away from Uther’s wrath.” Gaius spoke up then looked towards Leon’s direction who seemed to get the physician’s look.

“The king has tightened patrols around our border and has tasked some of the knights to set out to Ealdor to question Merlin’s mother…However, I have volunteered to go as well to ensure her safety. I assure you all that no harm would come to Merlin’s mother.” Leon’s words resonated throughout the small room which changed the mood drastically.

“And, we would be broken into different patrol groups each heading to nearby villages and kingdoms under the impression of inspection. Tension between Essetier and Camelot are at an all time high as Cenred has begun to sniff into our business. We ought to be careful on both sides, not just our enemies but against ourselves as well.” Leon added.

I glanced around the room and saw how the knight's expression has changed as they were indeed in a difficult position now.

“I hate to say this but it sounds as though we need Arthur back, am I right?” Morgana broke the silence and all eyes fell on her. “Yes.” Leon mumbled.

“We can’t bring Merlin and him back…We know that he will definitely not return without Merlin either. We have practically pushed ourselves into a corner!” Morgana huffed an angry sigh as she sat down and waited for anyone else to speak.

“What if. What if we made Arthur king?” I suggested boldly after recalling Gaius mentioning this briefly a few days ago. “You want to commit treason in other words?” Percival who would usually be quiet sounded baffled at that thought.

“We could overthrow Uther…I am not saying it is going to be easy but WE COULD! Many are suffering under Uther’s rule, it is time for another reign don’t you think so? This time, with magic…I believe together, Merlin and Arthur could make a better future for Camelot.” I explained with absolute confidence that everyone was staring at me awfully long.

Just as I was about to regret that I ever spoke up, Lancelot nodded his head, “I’m in. We have always been listening to Arthur anyways. What difference would it make for Arthur to be king instead?”

“To save my best friend and princess, I’m in as well.” Gwaine gave Lancelot a friendly pat on his shoulder and they shared a fond small between them. Slowly, everyone started to agree and we were soon on the same page: To make Arthur king!

“What about Arthur…Would he have agreed to this?” Gwaine asked suddenly. He had a point that we never thought of, because at the end of the day, Uther is Arthur’s father…His sole kin.

This plan that we are setting up is going to bring him down so how would Arthur react? Would he hate us? However, this is the only way to bring Merlin back into Camelot, how different would he react?

“Let’s not worry about the ‘what ifs’ now…We need a concrete plan to execute or else our heads would be on the chopping board!” Morgana urged.

“This is a risky plan so we must proceed with caution. I will find a way to write to Merlin informing them about our plan. As of now, we continue our normal duties first.” Gaius informed and everyone nodded in unison.

“Gwen, let’s return to my chambers to prepare for the night.” Morgana looked at me, offering a sad smile while I curtsy and said my goodbyes to the knights and Gaius.

One last look to Lancelot was more affirming than anything else before I finally left the room.

After we returned to Morgana’s chambers, whilst helping her change into her nightgown, she struck a sudden question which caused me to flush a deep red.

“How are things between you and Lancelot?” “You don’t have to lie to me Gwen. I see it in your eyes, how fond you are of him. Same goes for him, anyone with eyes could see what you two have for each other.”

“My lady I appreciate the concern but at this moment, we are both simply concerned to get Arthur and Merlin back. I am not sure how we will become in the future, I dare not dream of a future with him either.” I answered honestly.

“When Arthur is King…Anything is possible.” Morgana rested her hand on mine with a firm hold. “Rest well Morgana.”

Forbearnahn

The fire burned brightly under the setting sun whilst Merlin’s eyes changed from gold back to ocean blue. With that, was the last task he had to complete before he could return back to the inn.

“Great job Merlin! Appreciate your help once again today.” Xander, the village chief of Carmarthen complimented and gave the boy a pat on his back. Merlin has been working under Xander for only under a week yet he showed great strength and potential which Xander adored.

Not only was Merlin great with chores, physical work but he had magic! A trait Xander did not mind at all.

“Here is some extra money, please take it. I can see how much you need it.” Xander offered a heavy bag of coins which Merlin immediately refused. As much as he needed the money, he didn’t need Xander’s pity.

“You are living in that dingy inn…I am sure you need a proper home for yourself and your partner, am I right?” He questioned.

“Partner? How…How did you know?” Merlin was surprised that Xander even knew, Merlin had never disclosed any information of himself and Arthur in hopes to stay low.

“I am the chief of course…I know of things happening around my village. I am aware that you guys are travellers who have decided to settle down, yes? Even though I have no idea where you guys are from or the reason why you came, it is not my business but I would be happy to know as well. One day I hope you will open up to me! I am simply happy that you chose Carmarthen.” He explained which made Merlin’s heart fuel with warmth.

To be accepted openly was something Merlin yearned for in years and he has finally found it.

“Thank you Xander. I appreciate your kind words and gift, I’ll work well!” Merlin thanked him gratefully before heading back to the inn, secretly hoping Arthur would be around by the time he arrived.

To his dismay, Arthur was there. Frowning .

Merlin’s heart leaped with joy the moment his eyes landed on the beautiful blonde whom he was lucky to see after a long tiresome day of work but his heart ached when he noticed Arthur didn’t look happy.

Instead, he was dazed and didn’t seem to realize Merlin’s return.

“Arthur, are you alright?” Merlin's question finally snapped Arthur out of his thoughts, then he turned his head to the door with a fake smile, “You are back! How was work?” Arthur’s poor attempt to dodge Merlin’s previous question was caught almost instantly when Merlin shot him a worried look.

“Merlin, I am quite alright. Just tired.” Arthur replied carefully as he decided to help Merlin settle down after returning back from work.

“Did you find a job Arthur?” Merlin asked. Knowing Merlin, he already knew why Arthur was behaving this way. It was simply his pride speaking which was what the servant had grown accustomed to.

“Two weeks Merlin! We have been in Carmarthen for two bloody weeks but I have yet to find a suitable job.” Arthur finally broke, ranting away. “Why is it so bloody difficult to find a job that I am good at? While you on the other hand have been working away, I feel like a burden.”

“Arthur, I am not forcing you to find one instantaneously especially with our situation. Don’t be difficult on yourself, it is very tough on anyone going from riches to rags. Let’s be real here, you don’t have any admirable skills as you had only been Prince Arthur your whole life.” Merlin’s voice carried a hint of his usual snarkiness whenever he wanted to poke fun at Arthur.

“Prat.” Arthur shot him a glare but couldn’t help but smile with his best friend.

“Even though my pay here may not be as good as when I was your manservant, it is enough for us now. We can still make do with whatever's’ left from Gwaine and Percival too.”

“Despite everything, I know for a fact that Prince Arthur does not give up easily.” Merlin added after a heartbeat which caused Arthur’s heart to stir with emotions.

“Another piece of good news, our letters have arrived safely to the knights and the rest. I just need to find a spell for them to send letters back to us.” Merlin beamed brightly as he spoke of their friends.

Couldn't resist it anymore, Arthur pulled his best friend down by his neck, allowing their foreheads to rest warmly against each other.

Their eyes fell close as they indulged in each other's presence and warmth, knowing whatever happens in their upcoming future, they had one another to rely and protect.

In the small dingy room, Arthur somehow found peace and comfort with Merlin.

The air was eerily calm when Arthur ventured out into the forest in search of that scream he heard seconds ago. Being a knight himself, he could never ignore the sign or sound of distress no matter where he was.

Merlin had specifically told him to wait outside the tavern for him while he went to get help but Arthur heard the scream again, this time longer and more desperate so he decided to take off alone, following the sound of the voice into the woods.

Trailing a sword he randomly picked up from the village’s blacksmith behind him, he crept as quietly as possibly towards the voice until he spotted the source then he ducked down behind a tall bush.

It was a group of bandits surrounding a young boy.

They were terrorizing that poor boy who knelt on the floor, pleading for his life but the more he wept, the louder the bandits laughed.

“Once we get the money from the chief, we will let you go.” One of them chuckled which came off unfriendly as he slapped the boy on his head. Arthur’s grip tightened around the sword as anger was arising as the bandits took turns to assault the defenceless young boy.

“Oi! We ought to kill him. That would be even better!” Another commented and the rest laughed as if it was a good idea.

Arthur was not having it as he took the opportunity when two of the members were crouched forward and distracted.

The prince was trained to kill since birth, a mere group of seven bandits meant nothing to him however he was missing his armour and his own sword which meant he didn’t stand a great chance against them.

He easily knocked out the two he eyed as easy targets before leveling with the rest, a sword in hand and a whole lot of courage.

“How dare you! Assault an innocent, defenseless child!” Arthur yelled as he got the boy safely away from the bandits, shielding him behind his body.

“Who the hell are you? Have you lived so long that you don’t know how to mind your own damn business?” One of them, who happened to be the ringleader, cursed aloud and pulled a misericord at Arthur.

“I don’t care whatever business you have at Carmarthen but you have harmed a defenseless child! I will let you off with all your goods but leave the boy alone!” Arthur ordered, both hands clenched tightly on the sword and the other on the boy’s arm.

“You? Look at yourself boy, who the hell are you to order this of me? I can kill you easily, you are outnumbered.” He hissed and the others began charging at him.

Arthur hated it. He hated this. Because that foul man was right, he could be easily killed by these people.

Not only was he outnumbered, he had to fend off their relentless attacks along with protecting the young boy who got even terrified. A child should never be near a battlefield!

Suddenly, the sound of a sword piercing through air behind Arthur caught his attention and out of instinct, he turned his body around to protect the boy from the attacker. His life flashed before his own eyes, Merlin, his manservant’s smile , as one of the bandits had his sword swung to his face while the other attacked him on the side, slicing a cut wound into his left bicep. Merlin…I’ve let you down.

“ARTHUR!”

“ARTHUR NO!”

“ARTHUR RUN! GET AWAY FROM THERE!”

Morgana screamed and was only awoken by Guinevere’s fierce shaking. “My lady are you alright? Please tell me if you are alright? Nothing is real, it was all just a nightmare!”

“Guinevere what time is it? It most definitely WAS NOT a nightmare! It felt too real…It was suffocating. ARTHUR IS IN TROUBLE!” Morgana rambled anxiously while she gripped her maid’s arm tightly, pleading with her.

“Nothing is going to happen to Arthur alright? Morgana breathe with me…Merlin is with Arthur, they will be fine together.” Guinevere assured and only after hearing Merlin’s name did Morgana finally calm down.

“No. I will still feel safer telling Gaius about my dreams. Sometimes, my dreams would come true. Gwen you don’t know! Please, I have to tell Gaius!” Morgana cried and was trying to get out of bed when Guinevere stopped her, “My lady I believe you. However, how about we go at first light instead? Now it is still too early.”

“Merlin would never let anything happen to Arthur. He has magic after all…Nothing is going to happen.” Gwen assured one last time finally consoling Morgana back to bed.

This time, she stayed throughout the rest of the night in case another similar dream struck Morgana.

-

At the break of dawn, Morgana and Guinevere set off to the physician’s chambers as agreed.

When they arrived, he was surprised by their presence as he was not expecting anyone this early in the day but after Morgana explained the entirety of his dream to Gaius, his expression changed drastically. “Are you sure Morgana?” Gaius asked again, to which she nodded firmly.

With a sigh, he called upon the knights who came dutifully all dressed for their day already then explained the severity of their current situation.

“But how could we be so sure that this is not just a dream?” Elyan questioned skeptically. “Whatever I am about to say now should never be spoken to anyone, it was a discovery which I had never shared to anyone else other than Merlin. Is that clear?” Gaius warned seriously.

They were already in this together, plotting treason to overthrow Uther, what more could they not keep a secret?

“When Morgana was young, I discovered she had a little gift. These dreams she has been having since she was a child are not just dreams but futures. I can’t stop them and neither can she.” Gaius broke the silence with a groundbreaking truth which shocked everyone, especially Morgana. “So you are saying she’s a sorcerer?” Leon whispered.

“What? How is that possible? Gaius please tell me you are lying!” Morgana’s voice breaks with sadness as she finally finds out she has magic. All this time, she had magic! “Will I be killed then? Or do I have to exile myself like Merlin?”

“Of course you won’t! I have been keeping this a secret for many years and I will continue to do so.” Gaius comforted her. As a matter of fact, he has always treated Merlin and Morgana like his own children.

“I will take her secret to my grave.” Lancelot was the first to speak before the knights joined in unison. “My lady you have always been kind to me and you are most definitely not a monster…I will stand with you.” Guinevere smiled at her assuringly.

“Now we have a serious matter at hand, Arthur and Merlin are in danger! But we have no ability to stop it!” Percival exclaimed. “I am sure Merlin will save Arthur…He always does.” Gwaine replied slowly.

Everyone had faith in Merlin and knew he would always be by Arthur’s side but there was always ‘what ifs’.

“Lady Morgana, do you think you’re able to describe the surroundings in your dream? Maybe we will be able to narrow down where Merlin and Arthur are!” Lancelot suggested which was a great idea yet needed heavy amounts of time and effort.

“We will proceed with our patrols first, Gaius do you think you would be able to find out where Merlin and Arthur are?” Leon asked hopefully while looking in between Morgana and him. “I’ll try my best.” Gaius nodded before urging Gwen and Morgana over to where he had walked to.

- Merlin’s POV -

After breakfast, Arthur as usual walked me to Xander’s house for work. We didn’t know how or why but it has become a habit not only for him but for myself, I enjoyed his company every day before work. We fell into a rhythm, walking side by side and bantering about absolute nothing yet it felt like everything

That was until we heard a horrifying scream coming from the direction that we just walked from. The Tavern… “Arthur-” He cut me off almost instantly, using his body to shield me instinctively even though we weren’t in danger. “Stay behind me.”

“It sounded like it was coming from the direction we came from.” I said and before I knew it, the knightly conduct kicked in when I watched Arthur make his way back. “ARTHUR!” I yelled after him and followed him as usual.

He was always running face into danger knowing damn well he could not handle it on his own but he still does it anyways! This is why I will always be by his side, to keep him safe and his head in check apparently.

“Arthur, you have to promise me to stay here! I will get help from the chief.” I held him back when we arrived outside the tavern yet the scream had long disappeared.

“Merlin, there is no time. That person is in need of help!” Arthur retaliated as he looked around our surroundings frantically.

This very moment, I wanted to hit some senses into his thick skull and exclaim, “Yes that person is in need of help but most definitely NOT YOURS! For goodness sake Arthur, we don’t even know who this person is or where they are! ARTHUR must I remind you that we are NOT in Camelot anymore and you are not the prince with a troop of knights behind you! You are not even properly armoured to battle anyone! Please, let me call the chief for assistance…They would know what to do.”

“But Merlin, what if that person does not have the time?” Arthur urged and it switched a button in me, sending me into an angry state, “I FORBID YOU! Arthur please…I am begging you to not throw your life in danger! Stop being so reckless and use that brain in that thick skull of yours to think. Think for yourself, think for me…Please.” My hands flew to cup his face, pulling him closer to me as I pleaded against his lips, begging him was all I could do.

Arthur’s life is equally important to me to protect but with our current situation, I couldn’t help but feel it is more frail…The lack of protection from our friends, the knights and Camelot has gravely endangered Arthur’s life.

Simpler words: I have endangered Arthur’s life. And I will always feel guilty for this exile. Worst of all, I am not always by his side, so who the bloody hell was going to watch this oaf’s back?

His eyes widened in surprise as though he wasn’t expecting my sudden outburst but he seemed to understand as well.

“You are right Merlin, I am sorry for making you worry.” Arthur whispered as he rested his two hands on my back, stroking repetitive lines in a comforting manner.

“You should call the chief. I promise to wait here for you.” He added and we broke apart. I searched his eyes a second longer, before rushing off to Xander’s and trusting to find Arthur outside the tavern later.

-

Xander rushed to gather a few men upon hearing my explanation as we made our way to the tavern to join Arthur.

I had an unsettling gut feeling that something bad was going to happen but I still pushed it aside the moment the tavern slowly came into sight.

Yet to my horror, Arthur was nowhere in sight when we arrived.

I didn’t know whether I should be frustrated or annoyed that Arthur didn’t listen. At the same time, I was half expecting Arthur to not listen to me. Because when does he ever listen? Especially when one is in need of help, he just got to play the knight in shining armour.

“Arthur! Arthur!” Where the hell are you? I was frantically looking around for him but he was nowhere in sight until a loud scream resonated from the forest behind us. It sounded equally close to the one Arthur and I heard previously.

“THAT WAY!” Xander ordered and his men began running into the woods and towards the direction he pointed at.

That unsettling feeling returned, as I watched them helplessly. They were so fixated on finding where the scream came from but all I wanted was to find Arthur.

Clenching my fists together, I focused on Arthur. Just Arthur. To find him. Feeling magic at my fingertips, eyes glowering gold, I began searching the forest ahead of us to find any clues on where Arthur may have gone.

Give me a direction please…

Suddenly, a path revealed to have been walked not long ago showed in my vision. I followed it instantly, looking around in the meantime for distinctive features which could tell me exactly where it was.

Until I saw them, Arthur was shielding a little boy from the attackers but was fighting a losing battle against seven other men. He is going to die because I wasn’t there with him!

“Xander!” I yelled, chasing after the group with all my might, trying to catch up with them. “What is it, Merlin?” He slowed down in his tracks but his men continued running.

“You are going the wrong way! South…They're that way.” I panted heavily while I spoke due to my lack of stamina, the only times I ever ran was whenever Arthur got into some sort of trouble because of his refusal to listen and we needed to run away from enemies.

“How can you tell?” Xander questioned, feeling skeptical whether what I said was true or not. “My magic. It allowed me to see through the woods. Please, they are this way.” Was all I said before turning in the opposite direction and ran. I didn’t care anymore whether they believed me or not, all that matters is I get to Arthur’s side this instant.

Getting there got easier after I knew the route from my vision, taking turns whenever needed and shortcuts to get to Arthur faster.

I was quick but it was not enough.

My eyes fell on the group of bandits familiar to my vision, surrounding Arthur and that poor boy, they were attacking them relentlessly, with every chance they got yet Arthur fought fiercely, countering their every attack while protecting the boy.

That was when one of them striked the young boy instead which caused Arthur to shield him with his body.

A wave of panic swept through me that instant as I called out for him.

“ARTHUR!”

Ic the bebode thaet thu abifiast nu

“Ic the bebode thaet thu abifiast nu!” I chanted aloud with anger, my eyes flashing gold.

Within seconds, the ground beneath us began to shake violently like an earthquake, trees were rumbling and sand flew around that it might even turn into a sandstorm. It was miraculous that the world hadn’t split in two based on its severity.

Arthur held onto the boy tightly after they lost their balance and fell together. The bandit fell onto the ground next, dropping his sword in the process and Arthur took the opportunity to scramble away with the young boy.

The sword was only inches away from slicing down on Arthur’s neck, this was the only spell I could think of, it had saved Arthur before and this time it did as well.

“Arthur!”

 - End of Merlin’s POV -

“What the hell was that?” The bandits were stunned by the sudden earthquake as they tried to recollect themselves but it was too late, Xander’s men had rounded them all with their swords against their necks.

“Do not move.” Arthur commanded as he already had his sword pointed to the bandit who almost killed him.

“Elias!” Xander ran to the little boy, cupping his small cheeks in his palms as he eyed the boy up and down for any serious injuries. “Why the hell are you even in the forest alone? Are you alright?”

“Father, I am alright. This man saved me…These bandits tried to kidnap me, it was him who helped me.” The boy who Arthur saved happened to be the chief’s son.

The more Merlin looked, the more similarities he found between him and the chief.

“I can’t thank you enough young man. You saved my son’s life…Bring these fools back with us and have Merlin’s friend get treated for his wounds.” Xander ordered them and with a comforting hand on his son’s shoulder, they walked back to the village together.

“Merlin, I’m sorry.” Arthur apologized softly as he slowly made his way beside his best friend. “Your arm is bleeding.” Merlin seemed to only notice the huge gash bleeding profusely on Arthur’s left arm that he didn’t bother with the prince’s apology.

Grabbing the neckerchief around his neck, he wrapped it around the wound and had Arthur add pressure on his own.

“Do not remove your hand, you are bleeding too much and I don’t have the tools now to mend you up.” Merlin responded coldly to which Arthur took notice immediately. “Mer-”

“Shut up Arthur.” Merlin cut him off before grabbing his other arm and dragged him back to their inn.

They bid their farewells to Xander after rejecting his offer to be seen by their physician as Merlin insisted he would treat Arthur’s wound himself. So, they went back to the inn.

Helping Arthur to peel off his tunic carefully, he forced Arthur to sit on the ground while he grabbed some medical supplies that he kept.

“Why don’t you just use magic to heal my wound?” Arthur asked as he watched Merlin’s hand move meticulously and with ease. So he does know what he is doing…

“I want you to feel the pain of your own actions. Healing it would be too kind on you.” Merlin replied and tightened the knot over the bandage, squeezing the wound a little too tight causing pain on Arthur’s left side.

“Merlin, I am truly sorry. I know I promised but I still went on alone instead. I get that you are mad at me but please, talk to me.” He let out a soft sigh, grabbing Merlin’s hand before he could leave. “Merlin.”

“Arthur. Yes I am mad but I am mad because you don’t care! You promised me! You promised to not throw yourself into danger yet you still did it the next second. Knowing you were in danger and I wasn’t by your side, did you know how worried I was? I couldn’t help myself but overthink all the situations that would have happened. You are careless! Reckless! A total idiot! We are not in Camelot anymore, we are on our own! It frightens me.” Merlin fulminated, his voice raging aloud in their little room.

“Shower and get changed Arthur, we are heading back to Xander’s.” His voice returned to its original tone, shooting the other one last glance before leaving

-

When Merlin and Arthur arrived back at the chief’s place, the villagers were all gathered in the midst of a trial for the bandits who kidnapped the chief’s son.

Elias happened to chance upon the two men entering and he was quick to squeeze through the crowd and stand close with his saviour. Arthur acknowledged him by smiling down at the young boy, giving him a pat on his head.

Merlin on the other hand, ended up separating from Arthur to join Xander at the front where he was the judge of it all.

“What about that random earthquake we experienced in the forest? That was no coincidence.” The leader asked and the crowd silenced with tension building amongst us.

Xander was glancing at me then came Arthur who stood firmly by my side without saying a word. He was quietly glancing at the bandits yet his gaze spoke for himself, causing the bandit to scowl and turn away.

“It was magic.”

One of the bandits stated as he spat blood out of his mouth. “I know magic when I see it.”

“Your point is? Magic is not illegal in Carmarthen thus I do not see any reason to bring this up.” Xander brushed it off coolly. “It isn’t. But Camelot is just nearby and you do know what they do with sorcerers right?” He chuckled, sending a chill down Merlin’s spine. Seemingly detecting Merlin’s similar reaction, Arthur stiffened.

Hearing his own kingdom’s name coming from someone else’s mouth was a different feeling, the thought of Merlin being caught and sent back was scarier than it seemed.

“The earthquake was so strong, this sorcerer must be strong. Right?” Now the bandit was simply mocking them and Arthur was not having any of it.

The prince swung his foot forcefully into the bandit’s face, clocking him straight at his mouth, knocking him flat onto the ground. “One more word from you that does not relate to your crimes, you are losing all your teeth.” Arthur threatened then Xander gave his command for the seven criminals to be dragged to the dungeons.

When the villagers dispersed, Xander approached the duo with a tired smile, “Is your arm alright now? I hope Merlin has taken care of it like he was supposed to.”

“Your name is Arthur? Are you friends with Merlin?” He continued to ask when Elias decided to hug Arthur again. “Yes, we came to Carmerthen together.” Arthur responded and it seems something clicked in Xander’s head when his expression morphed into something different.

It was like he knew.

“Oh, Merlin’s partner.” Which took both Arthur and Merlin by surprise. It was so sudden they didn’t know how to react to not give themselves away. “Don’t get me wrong, I am not implying anything. I believe you guys would eventually be open to me one day…Anyways, I have something I would like to ask you, Arthur.”

“I saw the way you fought back there and you have skills like no other! I am absolutely fascinated, may I ask where you learn your sword skills from?” He asked.

“Erm…My father.” Arthur replied with a forced smile, his hand had already unconsciously gone to hold Merlin’s small wrist.

He was afraid the further Xander questioned his swordsmanship, the harder it would be to hide the truth of where he came from and his very identity.

“Come work for me! I am getting old with age and I need someone capable to train my men. What do you say? Join Merlin to work with me.” The chief offered with a smile. It was the best news Arthur has heard so far, not only was he offered a job, it was something he could and loved to do. To top it off, he could work with Merlin!

“Yes!” He agreed in a heartbeat, turning to Merlin to offer him the brightest smile. “Congratulations prat.” Merlin whispered before joining Elias who was excitedly jumping up and down to celebrate the days upcoming he would spend with his saviour, Arthur.

It was a long day for everyone, especially Arthur. But it did not stop the prince from cornering his friend to Arthur’s side of their little room, forcing Merlin to sit on the edge of his bed. “I can tell something is bothering you. We still have a long day tomorrow, we should get some sleep soon.” Merlin was straightforward about it, putting on a strong front but deep down, the incident still bothered him greatly.

“The earthquake. I know it was you but how…How did you manage such a strong reaction? It really does take loads of experience and magic to conjure something that powerful, how did you do that?”

“They say emotions are sorcerers greatest strength. At that point of time all I could think of was to find you. To find that insolent Prince named Arthur, you may not care about your life but I do.”

“Merlin, I am so sorry for making you worried. I guess I never thought of how much I meant to you…” Arthur let out a sigh as Merlin’s words sent him spiraling.

All his life, he never once thought he could be someone else’s importance. Uther cared for him like how a King would care for his kingdom, never acted like a father Arthur needed and wished to have all his life.

“I know you probably won’t accept my apology so easily but I’ll be careful from now on. I won’t be reckless anymore.”

“Arthur…I’ve already forgiven you.” “It is getting late, we should get some rest.” Merlin offered a reassuring smile, and stood up to help Arthur into bed.

It was a habit brought from Camelot, a night habit both were very much used to. It just made them feel closer.

“Let’s get you ready for bed.” Merlin urged, picking up his blanket so Arthur could easily slip underneath.

To his surprise, Arthur instead went on to pull Merlin into his warm embrace. His chin rested nicely on Merlin’s shoulder as they felt each other’s warmth. “Merlin, always remember that you are just as important to me. I am truly sorry for what I did earlier that caused you so much worry.”

“It is quite alright. I was expecting you to not listen to me anyways, like you always do.” Merlin stated adding a strong emphasis on the last part yet his actions were entirely opposite, comforting Arthur.

As they reluctantly moved apart, a hiss of pain came from Arthur which caught Merlin’s attention instantly. “Is something wrong? Did your wound open?”

“No, it just hurts. I’ll be fine.” Arthur affirmed before moving to his bed, slipping into his covers.

“Hold still Arthur.” Merlin stared for a long second before making up his mind, he should have done this before, he was simply too petty.

“What are you doing?” Arthur’s voice lowered the moment he realized what was happening.

Gehalge

Merlin’s eyes turned gold then back to its original blue, healing Arthur’s wound completely.

“Get some rest.”

Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months.

The duo fell into a daily pattern of going to work together where Merlin would be going around doing chores for Xander as well as helping the villagers out while Arthur trained the men efficiently then returning back together. It was the same as when he was back in Camelot, the prince training his knights, he felt the strong sense of satisfaction returning each day as his confidence grew.

Everyone continued to grow fond of them and they continued to fall in love with Carmarthen each day.

They had stayed low and undiscoverable for the past two months which was the most blissful times Merlin and Arthur ever had since. They had a dream together, to get their very own house with a small farm and they were working hard towards it.

Additionally, they discovered a spell for them to exchange letters with their friends in Camelot.

Until one evening, after Arthur and Merlin returned back from work, Merlin opened a letter from Gaius and read it aloud. That was when they realized their friends had gone mad with wanting to save them and bring them back to Camelot.

“They can’t make me king! It is simply not possible.” Arthur huffed out an angry breath before laying next to Merlin on his small bed. “Uther has been relentless in finding you that his health has deteriorated. They thought that you should know. Maybe you have the chance of actually becoming king, he says.”

“However they thought of another option to quicken the process and were wondering about our opinion…” Merlin’s voice trailed off as he slowly turned towards Arthur with a solemn look.

“What is it?”

-

“Are they insane? They want to kill my father?! Killing the king is treason, have they lost their minds?” Arthur gasped in horror after hearing Merlin read more of its contents aloud, which was absolutely baffling that his friends had the idea of committing treason.

“But they do have a point Arthur. I have always believed that you would be a better king than your father ever would. I still believe in that.” Merlin spoke confidently, meeting Arthur’s gaze straight on. His eyes never wavered, overflowing with sincerity that even without words, the prince felt every ounce of it. Arthur’s eyes softened along with his heart before turning away from the latter, “Forget it Merlin. I am no longer a prince, much less a king.”

“Arthur…One day, you will be. I believe in destiny, I believe in you!”

“Destiny? What destiny Merlin?” Arthur asked, looking back at him. “It is late Arthur, we can have this conversation another day.”

“No, Merlin, you are going to tell me what the hell you are talking about now. Are you hiding something else from me? Because I am done being lied to. I am done being the only one kept in the dark.” Arthur exclaimed in anger, the thought of Merlin hiding something from him again was too painful to bear. He thought things would change now after they had their roles and duties stripped away, Merlin wouldn’t need to hide or lie to him further. How wrong was he?

“Arthur, I never lied to you. Neither have I told anyone about it. It was the great dragon who told me about the prophecy. You Arthur, are the one true king. You are destined to unite all lands and bring magic back to Albion, becoming its greatest leader.” Merlin explained and it felt as though Arthur was hit in the face when he forgot to breathe.

“Let’s take a second, did you just say dragon? A dragon told you? As in…Spoke to you?” It was too much for Arthur to process.

“Yes. But that wasn’t the main point Arthur!”

“What dragon? How was I never aware of a creature in Camelot?” Arthur felt flabbergasted, he had to admit he may be blind to not see Merlin having magic but he simply could not have been that blind to miss a giant dragon in Camelot.

“Its name is Kilgharrah, the last and most ancient dragon that survived Uther’s great purge. Your father had him chained deep beneath the castle all this time… But I freed him in the end. Do not give me that look Arthur, even Lancelot has met and spoken to him!” Merlin rambled away whilst Arthur took time to process every word he spoke.

“Lancelot knew? And spoke to it?”

“Arthur! The point is, that you are deserving to be Camelot’s king. Don’t ever doubt it. It may not seem like it now, but I assure you that you will be.” The look on Arthur’s face was enough for Merlin to cross the room, reaching to Arthur’s bed so that he could touch Arthur’s cheeks.

“But Merlin, I can’t kill my father.” His voice was soft, sounding fragile at the same time which ached Merlin’s heart and soul miserably.

He never wished for Arthur to choose between his father and him, especially now, knowing how conflicted Arthur must have felt made him feel guilty.

Moving away from him, Merlin returned to his own bed, pulling the covers till his chest was covered. “It was just a thought, I will write back our response tomorrow…” Merlin wished to quickly end this conversation so that they could both get some rest and by not receiving a response from Arthur, he closed his eyes then to get some sleep.

The next day was no different from others, they followed their usual routine by getting breakfast before heading to work together. However, Arthur was looking solemn and only spoke after they arrived at Xander’s.

Parting ways, Arthur went to the training grounds while Merlin went to the other side to assist Elias with an errand from his mother. “Mother has asked me to buy some ingredients for dinner tonight, Merlin, could you help me? I am unsure what some items are.” Elias requested.

Grabbing Elias’s small hand, Merlin gladly led the boy to the marketplace while he held onto the list and basket.

The crowd in the marketplace was bustling and loud when Merlin and Elias reached the halfway mark of their list. They ended up getting distracted each time after Elias saw something he had never seen before and Merlin had to put in a heavy amount of effort to drag the small boy away, sometimes with a little magic.

“Woah…Merlin look! Knights! They look so cool…I have never met any knights before.” Elias’s excitement increased as he began jumping in joy while trying to get Merlin’s attention.

After purchasing the last item on Elias’s list, Merlin finally turned to the direction he was pointing to, wondering what exactly had caught this boy’s attention again.

To his horror, the group of knights were dressed formerly with eye-catching red capes on their backs.

The Camelot sigil shining against the sunlight, they caught everyone’s attention as they walked through the marketplace, their eyes glancing around warily as if they were searching for someone. Sadly, Merlin knew exactly who they were finding .

-

- Merlin’s POV -

Grasping Elias’s hand tightly, I pulled him behind a small stall and crouched down so I wouldn’t be seen.

“Merlin, what’s wrong?” Elias asked but I held onto his arms tightly, looking up into his eyes and said, “Elias I need you to listen to me carefully. Take these back to your mother and find Arthur. Remember to not alarm anyone, especially not your father please. Can you do that? Those knights are from a bad kingdom…Tell ONLY Arthur that knights are coming. I will chase the bad guys away first alright? Elias, can I trust you to deliver the news?”

“Yes, but will you be alright? If they are dangerous you should not fight them alone.” Elias asked worriedly but I only smiled, “Elias you are a big boy now. I am not going to fight them alone, I’ll just scare them away. No harm will happen.”

Caressing his cheeks, I urged him forward as he began to run back to his house, where Arthur was.

I needed a plan fast…I needed to divert the knight's attention away without giving myself away. I can’t let them get to Xander’s place if Arthur would be spotted.

Peeking past the ledge of the stall, I recognized some of the knights from Arthur’s many patrols and hunts but one specific face almost drove me into panic.

Lancelot…

I haven’t seen my friend in awhile…I’ve missed him so much. I wished I could reunite with him in a better situation but this isn’t it. I can’t be caught!

Just then, I saw my chance! Using magic, I had a store broken down in front of the group, stalling them as they rushed to help clean up the mess and provide assistance to the nearby villagers.

Taking the opportunity, I tied my neckerchief around my face, shielding myself from getting recognized and dashed in the opposite direction.

While I was running away, my eyes met Lancelot’s uneasy gaze as he froze half-way. I knew that instant he recognized me despite my disguise but he wasn’t the only one.

“Was that Merlin?” One of the knights shouted while pointing at me. It was the sign for me to run even faster. I could feel them chasing behind me, slowly reducing the distance between us which sent a wave of panic. “MERLIN!” “SORCERER STOP!”

I ran wherever my legs felt like taking me, running through the forest and close to the mountains, away from Carmarthen, away from Arthur.

I had to do something or else I am going to get caught, I could never outrun the knights. I will be caught if I continue.

From the corner of my eyes, I noticed a small gap between two large boulders as it blocked the majority of the opening.

I quickly slipped in between, the last I saw was Lancelot looking at me worriedly before whispering the enchantment, Gewicad ge stanas.

I felt magic tingling at my fingertips when the rocks around me began to shake, crumbling down and blocking the opening so the knights couldn’t reach me, narrowly escaping their grasps.

“FIND ANOTHER WAY IN!” “WE CAN’T LET HIM GET AWAY AGAIN.”

One last glance, I ran away without turning back again. I decided to hide at some place safe and away from Carmarthen first until things have died down. Hiding in a nearby cave, I ensured I stayed out of the light so no one would see me. It seemed like the weather was on my side when it began pouring heavily, covering my footprints or evidence that was left of me.

Letting out a soft sigh, I leaned against the wall of the cave, hoping the rain would end soon so I could at least return back to ensure no one had caught Arthur yet, to know whether he was safe.

“MERLIN!” “MERLIN?!”

It felt like a hallucination when I started to hear Arthur’s voice mixed in the pouring rain.

“MERLIN!” “MERLIN PLEASE…” It grew louder this time and I finally snapped out of my trance, scrambling to my feet, making it to the cave’s entrance as I searched for Arthur.

“ARTHUR!” I yelled as loud as I possibly could muster.

He turned to me, the expression carrying fatigue and anxiousness faded to relief in an instant as he ran to me.

“MERLIN!” He called out again, slamming his entire being against me, almost knocking me off my feet if it wasn’t his strong arms that had woven around my waist.

However, what he did next caught me absolutely off guard when he pressed his lips against mine.

It was forceful yet desperate but so soft at the same time, Arthur’s lips moved so carefully against mine that I thought it might just be all a dream. However before I could react to him, he broke the kiss as quickly as it happened, pressing his forehead against mine instead.

I didn’t dare to speak and neither did he. I was so afraid that I would ruin everything or he was already regretting his own actions.

“I thought I lost you…” Arthur whispered. We were standing so close with his arms still securely around me that I could feel his hot breath as he spoke.

“When Elias came to me that knights were hunting you down I froze. Merlin I have never been so terrified than that very moment. I ran frantically trying to find you and only managed to find this place after I saw my knights fleeing.”

“I thought I was too late…I thought they killed you!” His voice came out broken and coarse, shattering my heart into a million pieces. I moved my thumbs across his cheeks, unsure of whether it was rain droplets or tears I had rubbed away due to the dim lighting in the cave.

“Arthur, I am so sorry. They were coming our way, I had to do something. To pull their attention away. I wasn’t thinking thoroughly, I am sorry.”

However, just as Arthur was about to say something, another voice outside the cave shouted my name. “Merlin!”

Arthur quickly shielded the both of us, pushing us back deeper into the cave. “Merlin!” The same voice called out again, this time I felt a sense of familiarity. “Arthur, that’s Lancelot.”

“I saw him just now. He was one of the knights…I am sure of it.” I whispered and placed a hand over him affirmingly.

- End of Merlin’s POV -

“Lancelot.” Arthur’s tone was firm with a hint of wariness. The knight stopped dead in his tracks, knowing damn well to not move another inch towards the cave.

“Arthur. Merlin. It’s me, Lancelot.” He announced and Arthur’s guard gradually went down, confirming the identity of the knight.

“Lance!” Merlin brushed past the prince eagerly and went on to hug his friend. “It’s good to see you again Lancelot.” Arthur joined in, giving him a pat on the shoulder like how he used to.

“It began pouring and a landslide occurred upfront so the knights ran to seek shelter. You two need to leave now! I will divert their attention away from you guys.” Lancelot urged them as the rain was slowly subsiding.

“Then what about you? We just met!” Merlin didn’t want to say goodbye to his best friend yet, especially when they had just met minutes ago.

“I have an idea to throw the knights off but I need your blood Merlin, may I?” Lancelot held out his dagger, his expression soft when he requested.

Arthur eyed the knight skeptically, reaching a hand out to stop him, “What for?”

“I can’t use mine if not the knights would notice the cut. I’ll create the scene where Merlin was heavily wounded so we could deliver the news back to the king instead of continuing the search. Please…” Lancelot explained which Merlin immediately offered out his hand.

“Lancelot, take mine instead.” Arthur replaced Merlin’s hand with his, looking serious with his own suggestion.

“Arthur, don't be an idiot. I’ll be alright, it’s just a cut. Plus, I have my own magic to heal myself.” Merlin rolled up his sleeves, exposing his pale forearm and anticipated the blade.

“Yes you can heal but creating the cut will hurt.” Arthur had enough, roughly snatching Lancelot’s dagger and sliced it down on his palm. He allowed his own blood to drip to the ground until it formed a small trail out of the cave. “Is this alright?” He asked.

“Yes sire…” Lancelot replied before keeping away his dagger. “We will meet again, I am sure of it. I’m looking forward to your next letter.” Lancelot smiled sadly before taking off.

On the side, Merlin stared at Arthur, entirely baffled and worried as he watched blood still dripping down Arthur’s hand. “We need to head back now.”

Using his uninjured hand, he grabbed Merlin’s arm and dragged the idiot with him back to Carmarthen.

-

Their return shocked Xander’s household, no one was expecting Arthur running off in the middle of training to return drenched and bloody with Merlin by his side, equally wet and exhausted.

Luckily, no one questioned them and helped them inside instead. Elias, who knew the partial truth, remained silent as he helped Merlin to get himself dried and changed while his parents attended to Arthur’s bleeding hand.

“Merlin, are you alright? I didn’t tell father about anything!” Elias jumped on his bed to help Merlin dry his hair after a hot shower. “Thank you for not telling Elias. I am quite alright…Just tired.”

“Shall we check on Arthur together?”

-

- Lancelot’s POV -

We returned back to Camelot by sundown, dirty, drenched and some even injured. We wasted no time to present the new found information to the king.

Collecting all my thoughts, I stepped forward amongst the knights, my head bowed low. “Sire, we crossed paths during our patrol with Mer- the sorcerer. But it was raining heavily and…and there was a strong landslide, so we lost track of him. But while scavenging, we found this. In a pool of blood near a cave.” I presented Merlin’s red neckerchief for the king and the people to see.

The room broke out in heavy whispers yet I didn’t dare to move or make eye contact with everyone. I was simply afraid someone would see through my lies.

“It is not enough.” The king’s words were few yet firm which instantly silenced the room.

“Did anyone see the sorcerer die? Was there a body? If there isn’t, we CANNOT assume the sorcerer is dead.”

“But sire, it is impossible for one to survive after losing that much blood. We saw it with our eyes.” I tried to explain as the knights behind me all began muttering their agreement with me.

“Have you forgotten that he is a sorcerer? Forget him for a moment, have you managed to find Arthur then?” Uther asked.

“The prince was nowhere in sight. We are unsure whether they are even still together.” The other knight announced.

“Continue searching for the prince. My order still stands, kill the sorcerer and bring the prince back. The court is dismissed.” Was all King Uther instructed before storming out of the room with Lady Morgana trailing slowly after.

“Lancelot. Tell me what you said wasn’t true!” Gwaine exclaimed, chasing after the knight. Slowly, the others joined but where they were had no privacy. I could not tell them the truth here.

“Follow me.” We made our way to Gaius's chambers where Lady Morgana and Guinevere were already there.

Gwen’s face was red, her eyes swollen and dried tears could be seen from where I was. My heart ached knowing how much the news might have affected her. “Lancelot, please tell me what you said was not true…” Guinevere sobbed and Morgana went over to console her.

“Merlin and Arthur are alright. This neckerchief belongs to Merlin but he is fine. I wish I could have told you all earlier.” I apologized and their expression shifted to relief.

“Lancelot, they were in Carmarthen were they?” Morgana questioned and I looked at her, slightly surprised that she knew.

“So my visions were right…A few days ago Gaius and Leon managed to figure it out but we just weren’t sure.” She explained which Leon nodded in agreement.

“I am not sure if they are truly staying at Carmarthen, we couldn’t speak much. But they are doing alright.” I assured them all.

When I saw them in the cave, I could sense how their relationship had grown. They were much closer than before, I never knew they could get even closer but have proven me wrong. I could see in Arthur’s eyes and the way he protected Merlin, he really has fallen for him.

I am glad they have each other. It may have been difficult but they looked happy together.

- End of Lancelot’s POV -

Chapter Text

*** ***

Another month of hard work had paid off when Merlin and Arthur found themselves in Xander’s yard, one was wielding a sword and the other with a hoe.

Arthur had been training Xander’s men hard as promised as the village’s security tightened allowing the villagers to live at ease. Merlin was taking a well-deserved break after Xander had requested Merlin to help tidy his crops and out of goodwill, Merlin started on it in the early hours of the morning.

He was leaning against a wall, hiding under the shade as he admired Arthur.

After the incident, they never spoke about it. Neither did they bring up the kiss they shared in the cave which was infuriating and confusing for Merlin to process. Their relationship was still good with their casual banters which Xander would like to now call ‘couples bickering’ and having one another’s back all the time.

Today, Arthur was teaching a new group of men how to find their balance in the midst of a fight but ended up knocking each of them down hundreds of times. He was ruthless when it came to training and it showed the prince side of him that Merlin grew to like.

From time to time, the prince would even flash Merlin a smile his way which causes their hearts to race. Arthur wouldn’t have known how much this tiny action would affect his best friend and even himself. He would constantly pause for a second after a smile to Merlin to simply process what he had just done and stare at Merlin’s face, lighting up instantly.

They were simple people living their simplest lives, and they were happy .

“So you are Arthur?” A brute suddenly came storming into the training grounds with a confrontational look. Merlin whom was relaxing seemed to sense the danger when he straightened himself and began approaching them.

“And you are?” Arthur eyed him uncomfortably. He didn’t know who this man was or why he was approaching Arthur in a dangerous manner. “I have finally found you. I have heard a lot of things about your swordsmanship and wanted to experience it on my own. I simply could not believe anyone else would be better than me.” He smirked, challenging Arthur right then.

“I’m sorry but I do not duel others.” Arthur politely declined but the brute was not backing down until Xander stepped in.

“Alaric, what the hell do you think you are doing?” Xander stormed out of his house to confront the man that had intruded on Arthur's training session shamelessly.

“I just came to see your new warrior sir. I couldn’t believe the rumours that there was a man who had skills so great that he was only a simple man. Why would a man of such great talents work for you? Why wouldn’t he want to be a warrior? A knight?” The brute narrowed his eyes down at Arthur who seemed to catch on to what that man was implying.

“Alaric, do you always look down on others? For a big man, does your brain not match your size?” Merlin stepped out from the shade and onto the training grounds. He couldn’t sit by and watch him belittle Arthur.

“Merlin, shut up.” Arthur’s voice was cautious as he reached out to his best friend, pulling him to his side and stopping him from flaming the fire.

“Fight me.” The brute ignored Merlin’s comment with a glare, turning towards Arthur once more and challenged, this time more determined than before. Most likely because of what Merlin said.

“I will not.” Arthur responded firmly.

Then, he swung his fist fiercely across Merlin’s face causing the frail boy to fall a few feet away from where he stood.

It startled everyone around them, Arthur’s expression morphed into anger as he ran to help Merlin up.

“What was that for?” His sudden outburst proved what Alaric did was right, just enough to anger Arthur.

“Fight me.” He repeated himself. Throwing a sword to Arthur, he grasped his own and wielded it in front of him, showing he was ready for the fight.

“Fine, if you wish to die.” Arthur snatched up the sword and pushed Merlin towards Xander, away from them.

-

Alaric was about to regret ever hurting Merlin, Arthur would ensure that.

He was ready to fight against the man with great swordsmanship but he wasn’t ready to fight Arthur Pendragon, a knight, a prince. Furthermore, a hysterical Arthur Pendragon who sought for blood.

This man needed to pay for landing a blow on Merlin right in front of him .

Alaric charged forward, striking his first move but Arthur dodged his attack pretty easily, “Very sloppy.” His words came off cool and it triggered Alaric greatly.

The fight went on longer than it needed to when Arthur refused to land the final blow on multiple occasions, they continued to exchange blows each time stronger than the other yet neither sides were backing down. Alaric grew impatient and mad knowing damn well the prince was simply taunting him, making him look bad in front of the people who were there from the beginning.

“You have lost your focus. You should NEVER let that happen in the midst of battles, Alaric your skills are literally the worst, compared to your bragging.” Arthur sneered before clocking him over the head and using his body to knock the brute off his feet.

“You lost.” Arthur announced, his sword pointed directly to his neck, if it was any inches closer, he could slit his throat there and then.

“Why are you showing me mercy?” Alaric questioned feeling embarrassed that he had lost the fight he wanted.

“I don’t kill. Plus, I do not wish to stain Xander’s yard with your blood.” Finally, the prince ended the fight by stabbing his sword into the grass just beside Alaric’s head.

“You asked me why I didn’t want to be a knight.” Only Merlin and him knew he was done with that life. Now, was all that mattered.

“But why can’t I just be a simple man?”

Arthur turned to look at Merlin who was clapping along with the others to celebrate Arthur’s victory.

His best friend’s lips were bleeding from Alaric but he was smiling like a fool.

That was Merlin…His Merlin, always placing someone else above himself.

*** ***

“I think the people likes you more.” Merlin whispered after joining Arthur where he was cleaning the sword he used previously on his own.

“I could see in their eyes. Their admiration for you has definitely grown.” His eyes beamed when he spoke and it only made Arthur smile fondly, “What about you? Do you like me more?”

Merlin’s eyes widened with surprise, his cheeks flushed and his large ears turned red. “Wha…What? You may think of the idea that makes you the most satisfied.” Was all Merlin replied before turning away to shield his own embarrassment.

“Arthur! Merlin! May I have a word with you guys inside?” Xander requested and the two followed the old man inside his house.

“Is there anything else we could do for you?” Arthur asked but Xander shook his head. He was smiling warmly at them both making Arthur and Merlin feel slightly awkward just standing there.

“I have been holding back for awhile now but I believe now it is a good time! I am giving the two of you a present. From us, of course.” Xander prompted, then his wife urged Elias forward as he presented to us a drawing of a house and two figures beside.

“It’s a beautiful photo Elias, but who are these?” Merlin complimented and accepted the picture.

“Merlin, Arthur. Xander has gifted you two a proper place to call home. That dingy inn at the tavern would never be a good place for you both! Please accept this from the bottom of our hearts.” She explained.

Arthur and Merlin exchanged looks with one another, both equally in disbelief and speechless, unsure of what to say or react.

“We can’t!” Merlin was the first to process what was actually going on. “How could we possibly accept such a grand gift? Xander please, we appreciate the thought greatly but we simply cannot accept this! We don’t have the money.”

“Yes you both can. Just continue working with me, we have thoroughly enjoyed your company and would love to continue to have you all. Just take it as an appreciation for all your help, you guys have been here for many months , it is time to move out of that small room and settle down properly.” Xander insisted.

“Father has already sent someone to move your things to your new home! The place is so beautiful and nearby so that you two can come visit us more often!” Elias added.

“Xander, you are too kind. But Merlin is right.” Arthur wanted to refuse as well but Xander stopped him then instructed Elias to bring the two to their new house.

-

Elias was right because it was only a ten minute walk from Xander’s.

Their new house was located near a small lake, the land was spacious and the air was fresh. It wasn’t as grand as the castle, in fact, Arthur dared say, the house itself was smaller than his chambers but it was everything Merlin and him dreamt of.

The number of ideas and potential this place offered almost brought Merlin to tears.

They had a small yard where they could plant crops and grow their own food. A beautiful lake surrounded by a peaceful forest. It wasn’t beautiful, it was gorgeous

“Arthur, could you believe this is ours?” Merlin asked as they entered the house together.

“We did it Merlin.” Arthur snaked an arm around Merlin’s thin waist, holding him close when he whispered his next few words.

“We are home.”

Things weren’t looking up back in Camelot, each day Camelot weakens together with King Uther. Without a prince, political unrest has become prominent with the council slowly experiencing strong tensions.

King Cenred of Essetir had caught on that there was something going on inside of Camelot. This has pressurized Uther heavily causing his health to deteriorate greatly.

Recent days, he only spent his days in bed and only got up with the help from Gaius for council meetings. However, Morgana has slowly taken charge, taking up the role of leadership. It caused a great uproar amongst the council and only managed to secure her role properly with the support of the knights as well as proving that no one else could do it.

She was the reason why Cenred has yet to attack Camelot. Additionally, with her new powers she managed to foil some search plans for Arthur and Merlin.

Not all could be stopped as King Uther still stands but she would constantly find ways to refrain the knights from leaving Camelot.

“Have they written?” Morgana asked as Guinevere was assisting her to brush and pin her hair neatly.

“Yes, Leon mentioned that there was a letter addressed to us.” Guinevere replied with a smile. “They are doing fine, Arthur even got himself a job. Could you believe that?” She informed, and they laughed together, “I am sure Arthur doesn’t want to burden Merlin. But I would find it hard to believe that someone would even hire him.”

Gwen snickered, “My lady, they are working together actually. I’m glad they have one another.”

“Anyways, how are you feeling lately my lady? With Cenred closing in, you must be feeling pressurized.” It was not unusual for Gwen to worry, especially times like this with Morgana taking on too much. “I have an ally in Essetir and she has been keeping track of his movements for me. If there is anything, she would let me know. I will not let Camelot fall to Cenred.”

“Come, I need to see Leon and you can head on to see Lancelot.” Morgana teased making Gwen’s ears turn red. Still, she followed Morgana to the training grounds where they would find the knights.

Darkness loomed inside the bed chambers, curtains drawn halfway whilst the king laid sickly in bed.

His health has been deteriorating despite Gaius’s efforts but all he could do now was rest and let Morgana handle things in court. He was against it initially but he was growing weaker, he doesn’t have the strength to fight it now.

Only one thought has been constantly on his mind this past few weeks, he has to get Arthur back. Camelot needs its prince and he needs his son! And he was going to get Arthur back at all costs.

- Uther’s POV -

I waited till nightfall when everyone had gone to sleep before heading out of my chambers and down the flights of stairs with only one destination in mind. It took me much contemplation to finally settle on my decision.

“Sire? You are still awake?” The guard on duty looked surprised to find me in the middle of the night.

I haven’t stepped out of my chambers for days now, I have to behave inconspicuously.

“Yes, I decided to take a walk to clear my head.” I replied.

“Would you like me to accompany you sire?” He offered politely but I declined, I was simply roaming my own castle, I didn’t need protection. “I wish you a good night sire.” He bowed before returning to his post.

I continued my journey down the castle, slipping into a hidden and abandoned hallway that I had condoned ever since the great purge. Continuing down the narrow stairs, my only source of light was the torches hung on the walls until I came face to face with exactly what I was looking for.

It was a crystal that hadn't seen the light of day for years, the last I recalled it was still active however it hasn’t been used in years and far too deep underground, would it still work?

Unlocking the cage with the keys only Arthur and I had, I slowly stepped inside.

“Hello?” My voice echoed throughout the dusty room yet the crystal had zero reaction. How the hell was I going to get this to work?

Taking a deep breath I tried once more to summon the great dragon, as old as magic and the last one alive.

-

“Uther Pendragon, to what displeasure do I owe you for you to call upon me?” The dragon’s voice carried disdain but I was utterly unhappy to be here either. It swooped down from god knows where, appearing right before my eyes. The crystal glowed dangerously while the magic flared inside.

“I need your help.” I stated.

“Help? Why should I help you? After you had imprisoned me all my life!” It’s voice angrier than before causing the ground beneath me to rumble lowly.

“I just need a way for me to reach a sorcerer. He took my son! Camelot is in grave danger without its crown prince, I have no choice.” I tried to explain and its eyes narrowed down at me, “Uther Pendragon…Turning to magic? The sole thing that you swore to ban…Yet, here you are.”

His voice was filled with mockery this time and he let out a dry laughter.

“I will not help you.” Its words were final and I watched as it was about to fly away then I immediately called for it again, “Wait! I just need to get Arthur back please. He has been enchanted by that wicked sorcerer causing him to run away with him.”

“Run away? Who is this sorcerer in question?” The dragon asked calmly, settling back down.

Was the sorcerer that important that the great dragon would wish to know his name?

Without thinking I told him honestly, “Merlin.”

The dragon didn’t speak for a long while as if it was thinking.

“I’ll tell you how you can reach Merlin but I can’t promise you that they will help. You have been unkind to magic users, there will always be a great distrust. But, I have one condition that you must agree to.”

“Once you have managed to contact Merlin, I want you to bring him back to Camelot. He must be unharmed, I have something to discuss with that young warlock. Uther Pendragon, do you agree?”

His request was odd but wasn’t possible. As much as I wanted to kill the sorcerer on sight and force Arthur home, the dragon’s deal was more plausible. Whatever it takes, I am going to bring Arthur back!

“I swear on my honour.” I agreed.

“Your honour holds no meaning to me. Without Arthur, Camelot is already doomed. Uther Pendragon do you really believe your ways to be of Camelot’s best interest? I may not be there to witness everything but I know you are already failing.” The dragon’s words ignited a fire within me, fueling my rage and triggering my illness out of nowhere.

I started coughing violently till I almost lost my balance. Grasping onto the uneven walls, I steadied myself and looked up into the crystal to meet the dragon’s gaze again.

“Speak to the lady of the lake. Lake Avalon has your answers. If she refuses, no one else will help you.” The dragon eventually gave the answers I was looking for then flew off into the sky.

I may not be there to witness everything but I know you are already failing.

No. I’ll make it right, whatever it takes…My son will return. Sorcerer or Sorcerer-less.

- End of Uther’s POV -

Dinner had never been an exciting task for both Arthur and Merlin apart from today, it was.

They were constantly smiling to one another, joking around while they set up the table and prepared the food in their own kitchen .

They ate well at their dining table before preparing themselves for bed. It was their first ever night in their brand new home.

They were like two idiots doing everything for the first time.

In their shared bedroom, they shared a big bed too. They had unknowingly agreed to share a bed instead of getting separate beds. Neither had any complaints.

“Xander has given me the day off tomorrow, I’ll take the time to clean around the house. Would you like to help?” Merlin asked even though he knew the prince would say no. The time when Arthur does chores would be the day Merlin is king. Chances are non-existence .

“Sure.” Arthur replied and Merlin turned around so fast, his neck almost snapped, “What? Did I hear you correctly?”

“I said I’ll help you tomorrow.” Arthur repeated dumbly. “Why?” Merlin shot back hastily which earned a weird look from Arthur.

“What do you mean why? You asked a few seconds ago.”

“Get some rest Arthur because tomorrow you will be working on our farm.” Merlin teased with a knowing smirk.

Notes:

The idea is that in Camelot's treasury/vault, Uther actually secretly kept a piece of crystal (inspiration from the crystal cave).
So to get everyone's understanding aligned, basically this story takes place after Merlin had freed Kilgharrah which is why Uther has no choice but to sought out the dragon with magic.

Understanding that only dragonlords can call upon dragons or summon them, well, let's just say Kilgharrah could have ignored Uther but he didn't.

Anyways, we are almost reaching the midpoint of this story! I am so excited to finish this story actually.

I'll see you all soon <3

“Wake up Arthur!” Merlin shouted for the thousandths time but the prince had yet to move an inch from their bed.

Still hidden under the covers, he tossed and turned until his back was facing their open window.

“Merlin, close the damn curtains.” Arthur whined from the bedroom while Merlin was busying himself in the kitchen, preparing breakfast for them.

“You lazy arse, get out of bed.” After Merlin had enough, with each word, Merlin tugged the prince out of bed and dropped him onto the ground.

“Merlin!”

“Arthur. You promised to help around the house.” Merlin retaliated and when there was no response from the blonde, he walked to their shared cupboard and started pulling Arthur’s clothes out.

“I promise to start later in the day.” Arthur mumbled from the ground, his laziness still getting in his way of waking up for the day.

“Then I would already be done, you clotpole.” He stated as a matter of fact because it was a half truth.

Today Merlin was against using magic as he wished to do things manually, it was his home after all…The satisfaction whenever he gets things done himself was his sole motivation.

“Alright. What would you like me to do?” Arthur heaved in a heavy sigh before standing up, throwing the blanket back on the bed.

“Well, you can start by making the bed first. Then, you will work at the yard.” Merlin responded quickly that Arthur genuinely thought he heard Merlin wrongly.

Because did that brat just ask him to work outside? Under the hot arse sun?

“If you woken up early the heat wouldn’t have been a concern.” Merlin informed smoothly then walked out of the bedroom leaving Arthur staring helplessly at the clothing Merlin had picked out for him.

-

Despite the complaints, Arthur truly wanted to help. He quickly got to work after changing and have his breakfast that Merlin was kind enough to prepare.

Firstly, he prepared the yard outside their home by ridding the dead plants and weeds that were long overdue of a trim. It took him almost three whole hours to do so even though their yard wasn’t very big yet Arthur struggled a lot.

Next, he carried bags of new soil and fertilizer that Merlin got from Xander’s into the yard where we finally started working on the farming.

Arthur never told anyone this before but he secretly hoped to be a farmer one day, who knew it would actually come true. To top it off, he was with Merlin.

He could grow carrots, potatoes, wheat etc.

To take care of what is his, watch them grow and finally harvest them one day was a beautiful vision.

But it does not come so easily.

He was already sweating buckets, his new shirt long drenched in his own sweat, sticking uncomfortably to his skin. He had only managed to plant the carrots and potatoes seeds then fertilized them by hand after.

Then, he decided to take a breather inside.

- Arthur’s POV -

The moment I entered the house, I was in awe with how much Merlin had done. Compared to me, the work I had done outside meant nothing.

He was running around joyfully whilst humming a soft tune, he has turned the once empty and lifeless hut into a clean and cosy home for two.

“Already done?” Merlin asked, stopping in his tracks. The soft smile plastered across his face was enough to melt the hours-long fatigue away and for my heart to race. “No, I am just taking a break.” I replied, taking a seat in the living area as Merlin busied himself again.

“Well you definitely did absolutely nothing, that’s for sure.” Merlin commented after glancing out of the window to take a glimpse of my hard work.

“What? I did the best I could! Merlin, have you noticed how scorching the sun is?” I complained and he let out a faint laugh, “I’ll help you after I’ve finished. You could have asked.”

“Asked? Sometimes Merlin I really question whether you are dense or not.”

With a flash of his eyes, the work outside was all done. The yard was cleaned and trimmed with all the seeds planted, their front walkway perfectly swept. The dirt and dust that once resided on the ground vanished completely.

“Merlin!” I was in utter shock that what needs hours, perhaps a few days time for me to complete was all done within seconds.

“You’re welcome dork.” Merlin smirked before completing the task at hand. He delicately folded our clean sheets and blankets before storing them into our cupboard.

“I would hug you now.” The words came out of my mouth instinctively allowing a grin to form on Merlin’s face.

“And why haven’t you?” His tone hinting with slight amusement.

“I’m…Erm…Sweaty. I’m sweaty. And I’ll go take a shower now.” I found myself stuttering yet it was another thing Merlin found amusing.

“Arthur.” And I turned around to see what Merlin needed.

“Do you even know how to prepare your own bath water?” He questioned, his hands resting on his hips and flashing that insolent smirk at me.

“Prat. If you know the answer, you will be getting along already.” I glared daggers at him which he only received with a smile.

Then he proceeded to walk towards the bathroom, brushing past me with his hands subtly touching my arm.

“Arthur.” He called once more which got me more confused until I felt him press his lips against my cheek for a short moment. It was so fast, too fast , that I couldn’t process before it was over.

My eyes followed him as he disappeared into the bathroom and I felt my heart swell with affection.

Could our days ahead be filled with moments like this? I would pray each night for another peaceful tomorrow, for the both of us.

- End of Arthur’s POV -

The greatest had yet to come when Arthur opened the door after his shower to find a wholesome scene in the living area.

Elias has came to visit when Arthur was in the bath so Merlin ended up playing with the little boy to keep themselves entertained as they waited for the prince to be done.

“Arthur!” Elias exclaimed with joy, running up to embrace Arthur. For the past few months, Elias has grown a fond habit of pouncing on Merlin and Arthur whenever he sees them, which the duo would accept with open arms every time.

“You didn’t inform us you were coming?” Arthur asked with the brightest smile while holding the boy in his arms warmly.

“It was meant to be a surprise!”

“Well. I am definitely surprised! Have you finished your homework Elias?” Arthur’s eyes drifted to Merlin who stood up with a small backpack on his hand, swaying it in front of Arthur as a answer to his question.

“Father said I could do it here.” He quickly responded then Arthur and Merlin shared a knowing look with one another. Xander knew they would ensure Elias does his work, especially Arthur, that was how stubborn the prince was.

He grew up in a strict environment after all, his father would always ensure he was not lacking in his studies.

He never studied with others his age, he never studied in a classroom in the village, he was always alone and carrying high hopes from his father.

He studied equally hard as he trained, he wanted to be the best. He wanted to gain his father’s acknowledgement.

“Sit down Elias, I’ll help. Would you also be spending dinner here?” Arthur buried the past memories deeper inside his mind and stroked the boy’s hair softly. “Can I?”

“Of course Elias, you are always welcome in our home.” Merlin replied instantaneously and planted a soft kiss on his forehead before looking up to meet the prince’s gaze.

As though silent words were spoken between them, Merlin seemed to notice and understand what was on Arthur’s mind.

He flashed his partner a comforting smile then tiptoeing to press his lips on Arthur’s forehead as well.

This time, Merlin allowed them each the time to savour the moment, soft and comforting, easing the uneasiness in Arthur’s mind like a medication.

After dropping Elias back at Xander’s and bidding the boy goodnight, Merlin and Arthur decided to take a night walk before heading back.

- Merlin’s POV -

“Would you like to share what is on your mind?”

“I thought of my father.” Arthur muttered quietly. The night was so quiet that even if we were to whisper, we could still hear each other clearly.

Arthur’s words were simple and I couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt sweep through me.

“I miss Camelot but I don’t regret it. I don’t regret any decisions I have made since leaving Camelot.” Arthur quickly added on after noticing my subtle reaction to his initial words.

“I understand Arthur. I tend to dream of Camelot sometimes.” I smiled assuringly when Arthur suddenly grabbed my hand, interlacing his fingers with mine before pressing a kiss on the back of my hands.

“Merlin, I wish for you to never forget this, this moment nor what we have going on. I always thought Camelot would be my home forever but now, I could see how wrong I was. My home is not in Carmarthen, neither is it our house..”

I watched helplessly, feeling the overwhelming love about to burst from my chest, as Arthur continued pressing soft kisses on my hand as he spoke.

“You once asked me what my favourite part of Carmarthen was so far…” Arthur continued, his eyes glowering beautifully under the night sky.

“It is you. You are my comfort, my happiness, my home and I’ll always return to you.”

Tears began streaming down my cheeks after hearing Arthur’s confession.

I simply couldn’t help it anymore, it was so beautiful and heart-warming to know he felt the same way as I.

“I never realized you were a man of words. Arthur, thank you. Thank you so much.” I embraced him tightly.

Yes, I can live just like this with Arthur. Simple men growing a small farm in their yard in a lovely village freely with no obligations. We can finally have our happily ever after…

That was what I thought.

I broke the hug reluctantly so we could finally head home.

However, I felt a sense of uneasiness grow within me and my magic began prickling warily. I turned around to check our surroundings but there was absolutely no one…I could feel no magic yet somehow my magic was reacting to something.

Then it was. Merlin

A voice called for me and I quickly snapped my head back to find the source but there was nothing. Is my mind playing tricks on me?

Merlin .

Merlin .

Merlin .

- End of Merlin’s POV -

Chapter Text

*** ***

The next few days, Merlin would constantly feel a prickling sensation down his neck and spine, hearing subtle whispers and voices nearby which caused a huge distraction to his daily life. He had tried to search for the source but to no avail.

It was irritating, especially in the night, when everyone was asleep. Merlin would always be awoken from his slumber in cold sweat whilst Arthur slept like a dead log beside him.

Carefully, he slipped out of bed for the fifth night in a row, pouring himself a glass of water before taking a seat outside.

Merlin

Merlin .

Merlin, we need your help .

Merlin instantly rose to his feet as he began looking around. The voice was somewhat familiar to him but he simply could not remember. Who could possibly need his help?

“Merlin.” He was startled by the closeness of the voice but calmed down when he noticed Arthur standing behind him. He had a groggy expression which Merlin found adorable but knew the prince was only half-awake.

“I was feeling thirsty, head back to bed first Arthur.” Merlin responded with a yawn.

“Would you join me?” The prince asked lazily but instead of waiting for Merlin’s reply, he turned around and went back to bed.

After a while of not hearing anything else, Merlin retired for the night. Pushing the thoughts away, he closed his eyes and soon drifted to sleep.

-

Days turned into weeks with the voice fully distracting Merlin from his normal life. It was a voice that pestered him, sometimes would even send Merlin’s mood spiraling downwards,  that abnormality did not go unnoticed by Xander and Arthur.

One moment Merlin could be in his usual carefree self then the next, he could be in the foulest mood, even Arthur stood no chance of getting close to him.

The last time Arthur tried speaking to Merlin, he crossed the line Merlin drew to set his boundaries which thoroughly pissed Merlin off. Which caused a mishap to occur.

“Merlin, will you please just stop for a second and look at me!” Arthur tried, following the other relentlessly around Xander’s yard. Arthur had dropped the knight's morning training that day because Merlin was acting strangely.

Throwing the heavy sacks he was carrying on the ground, Merlin turned to Arthur with a glare.

“Tell me what’s wrong, please Merlin. If you haven’t noticed, we are all worried for you. Xander and I!”

“Leave me alone Arthur. You wouldn’t understand.” He snapped and tried to walk away but was held back by the prince. His grip as if made out of steel, strong and sturdy as he refused to let go until he got his answer.

“Merlin, stop this. What is it that you want?” The prince looked at his friend with a frown but before Merlin could reply, he heard that voice again.

Merlin watched carefully but nothing seemed amiss. Arthur still did not hear it… How could he understand?

“Some peace and quiet.”

This wasn’t Merlin. He would never treat anyone this coldly, especially Arthur, the very person he swore to love and protect. But he has been pestered long enough that it was slowly driving him mad, his magic tingling as if they were aggravated.

“Merlin!” Arthur tried to reach out again but at the same time, Merlin’s magic suddenly lashed out, the sack of dirt beside them exploded into bits with dirt covering the entirety of where they stood.

Merlin stared in fear, his hands shaking uncontrollably as he wondered if it was his doing. Obviously, he was the only one with magic

He had never lost control of his own magic before, never.

The thought of hurting someone sent Merlin in a frenzy. Then, he slowly looked up to the familiar faces surrounding him, Xander and his wife with Elias stood close to their house and Arthur who was still standing in front of him. He was in the closest proximity which meant my magic could have injured him!

“I’m sorry. I am so sorry! I’ll clear up the mess.” Merlin dropped to his knees, using his hands to scoop the dirt into his hands. It was very ineffective yet Merlin refused to stop, he was trying to distract himself.

Sensing his distress, Arthur instantly joined him on his knees but he was forcing Merlin to stop what he was doing. “We can clean it up later alright? Merlin, please stop for a moment and breathe! You are not breathing right…Come on, look at me please.” Arthur grabbed hold of Merlin’s arms, forcing the man to meet his eyes as he helped Merlin to steady his breathing.

“Merlin.” His name coming from Arthur sounded like his sole anchor to reality, feeling his partner press his forehead against his own was comfort. It eased his heart and anxiety momentarily until Merlin recalled how he lost control of his own magic, then, he forced himself to push the prince away. “Stay away from me. I may hurt you.”

“You won’t hurt anyone. You won’t hurt me…Merlin, why don’t you get some rest for today…I’ll clean the mess here before returning home to speak with you. Is that alright Merlin?” Arthur suggested. Arthur was right, Merlin needed to rest

He needed to get away from people so he finally agreed.

He bid goodbye to Xander and his family before running back home.

Merlin did what he knew best, he fled.

-

Still feeling terrified, he didn’t dare head home. What if he ruined that as well?

Thus, he ended up at the lake near their hut. It had clear flowing water and somehow Merlin always felt the air was fresher there. Taking a seat by the lake, he enjoyed the sound of the flowing water coming upstream as well as the rustling leaves whenever the wind blew.

Merlin. Merlin!

His eyes shot wide open the second he heard the voice again, this time it was louder.

It was no longer in his head, he was really hearing it! He was going to get to the bottom of this, he can’t let another day go by again, he was sick and tired! In fact, one could say he was exhausted.

That was when he finally saw it.

The lake was filled vastly with still water except a small portion on his right, no one would have noticed that small bubbling pool of water magically at a corner unless they looked long and close enough. Quickly, he jumped inside and walked towards it.

To his surprise, an image slowly appeared. Reflecting from the water was Freya.

Merlin was in disbelief, he never would have thought he would see her again after she passed away many years ago.

The first time Merlin ever saw her, it was as though he needed to protect her at all cost. It was like love at first sight, he held her close to his heart. His love for her runs deep until now, he would forever remember and reminisce about her but this love was completely different from the one he had for Arthur.

He came to terms with that after he shared a kiss with Freya that fateful night, he still loved Arthur .

“Merlin, you are finally here.” She smiled as she spoke. “It was you who was calling me?” A moment of realization hit, could it possibly be that she was in danger? There was no other explanation as to why she would reach out to Merlin like this.

“I have searched everywhere for you. I should have known you would choose Carmarthen. A village surrounded by nature.” She continued, her voice soft and soothing.

“How did you know I was here?” Merlin questioned but she shook her head. Instead of answering his question, she said in a more serious manner, “I have come to pass you a message. Unfortunately, speaking to you here is difficult and limited for me thus I have to force myself to keep this short. Merlin, please come to Lake of Avalon, Camelot is in danger!”

With that, she disappeared and the water stilled as if nothing happened. Her sentence was short but she managed to deliver the important point to Merlin.

The thought of Camelot being in danger set alarms ringing in his mind, what was Merlin supposed to do? He must go to Lake of Avalon!

However, the shortest route to Avalon from Carmarthen needed at least a day to get there by horse.

If he was to save Camelot, he must set off now!

“Merlin!” Arthur’s voice came from behind then he remembered, Arthur…How was he supposed to tell Arthur. He never told Arthur about Freya because it would have complicated things but now, Camelot was in danger…

He needed to make the decision on whether Arthur should know or not. But, he too was not sure what danger Camelot was in as Freya’s message was vague.

“What the hell do you think you are doing? Have you lost your mind?” He demanded as Merlin watched him run into the lake with his boots still on. His face carried a worried expression.

“I wasn’t doing anything!” Merlin blurted out but Arthur was rather unconvinced, eyeing his friend up and down, “Sure, you were simply thinking of going for a swim.”

“Arthur, you have to believe me!”

“Believe you? How am I supposed to when you are acting this way? How am I supposed to not worry for you when you are behaving so differently!” Arthur lashed out, all of his anger and emotions over the past few days exploded that very moment.

“Why are you pushing me away? What happened to no more lies?”

Merlin stared at the prince with wide eyes, slightly startled by his reaction. He saw how much he had hurt Arthur without realizing. He was so overly fixated on the voice that he had pushed everyone including Arthur away and that pained the prince more than anything.

“Arthur, I am sorry. I never wanted to hurt you…It’s just-I have been so overwhelmed lately that I thought it was better to be alone. I guess it’s…It’s reality catching up. We can’t hide forever Arthur, one day someone will find us!” Merlin tried his best to explain, to deceive Arthur .

Then, Arthur’s face slowly relaxed as he heaved a slow sigh of relief before holding Merlin’s hands in his, “Merlin you don’t have to worry about that. We will take it a step at a time, each day I get to spend with you would suffice. Look, we have our own home now! No one can take that away from us.”

He turned to stand beside Merlin as they glanced proudly towards their little hut just in front of the lake. Arthur’s hand went over his shoulders, squeezing the slimmer guy firmly as an encouragement for the both of them.

Merlin loathed Arthur’s optimism in their current situation yet it was also the very trait to allow Merlin to feel safe.

He felt uncomfortable lying to Arthur but he needed to understand what Freya meant first before he could make the decision to tell Arthur or not.

“Idiot, your boots are dirty now! Who in their right mind would run into a lake with their boots on?” Merlin chided affectionately when he looked down at their feet. His was bare, only the tip of his trousers were soaked in water whilst Arthur was the complete opposite…

“I wasn’t exactly thinking when I saw you standing in the middle of the lake looking lost.” Arthur refuted and Merlin simply could not blame this man. He cared for Merlin resulting in his own actions….

“Hm, I wonder who is going to clean the boots?” Merlin asked sarcastically, exchanging a knowing, gleeful glance with one another. Tugging Merlin by his arm, the prince then dragged his friend out of water and back home.

-

That evening, Merlin waited till Arthur fell asleep before running off to Xander’s place. He felt guilty to disturb him at such late hours but he had no time to waste. He needed to settle everything and inform Xander before leaving for Avalon.

Xander, already dressed in his pajamas, was surprised to find Merlin knocking at his door close to midnight. He was about to head to bed after Elias slept when he heard the faintest knock at his door. “Merlin, what can I do for you?”

“Xander, I am sorry for disturbing you so late in the night however I am here to inform you that I’ll be away for a day, I have an urgent errand to run.” Merlin kept his head low still feeling the guilt of bothering Xander.

“What could be so important that you must leave now? Can’t it wait till dawn?” He questioned worriedly when he noticed Merlin carrying a bag with him. He was packed and ready to leave any moment.

“I am sorry Xander but please also keep this from Arthur. I have informed him that it was an errand I had to run for you…I sincerely hope you assist me this time.” Merlin pleaded.

It was too much to ask for Xander to lie but he wouldn’t want Arthur to worry too much.

“What? He doesn’t know the truth? Merlin, what is going on?” The usual compose chief would never question Merlin or Arthur but this time he felt obligated to, he has long seen the two boys as if they were family. He was worried Merlin would be in danger.

“Truthfully I have no idea as well that’s why I am leaving to find out. I apologize once again for my abrupt departure, I have to leave now before it gets even darker.” Merlin replied hastily before taking off into the forest with only his bag and a horse.

- FLASHBACK -

Uther Pendragon set off alone on his horse in the general direction from the dragon and an old map in hand, making his way to the Lake of Avalon. No one knew the king had ventured outside alone and into dangerous territory despite his frail body, he persevered on.

When he finally arrived, another day had begun, it’s sun rising again.

Uther has long lost track of the number of times he saw the sun rise and fall but it didn’t matter, he was finally here.

Forests and a tall mountain surrounding the vast waters of Avalon, with no men in sight. It was only him.

The place was quiet and sacred, protected with magic, the king didn’t dare do anything rash.

Slowly, he walked up to the lake.

“Uther Pendragon. What business could you possibly have at Avalon?” A loud booming voice resonated around the king, around the forest that he didn’t know where it came from.

“I am here for the lady of the lake.” Replied Uther.

Slowly, the still water just in front of the king began to stir causing ripples of water to form just before a clear image of a lady appeared.

As elegant as myth, she stood before Uther Pendragon with her head held high. She wasn’t afraid of the once ruthless king, she had no reason to .

“You are the lady of the lake?” He asked skeptically which she nodded, “The name is Freya.”

“My lady, I am here to seek out a sorcerer. I was told, you would be able to help.” Uther spoke respectfully. The king hated people with magic or consorted with magic but he knew he was on magic’s land, he had to obey.

His hatred could easily set the whole land on fire but he was in no position to do so.

“Merlin, have you heard of him? He bewitched my son and kidnapped him from me!” The king exclaimed while trying to contain his anger.

A flash of recognition appeared on Freya’s face but she was quick to collect her emotions again. “Unfortunately I cannot help you. I have no idea where this warlock or your son may be.” She replied calmly.

“No, you do have a way to contact him! That is what the dragon said.” Uther retaliated with growing anxiety, she was his only hope. If she refuses to help, he may never get Arthur back ever again.

“I simply wish to speak with the sorcerer please. Camelot is weak without its crown prince. With war on the verge and a weak leadership, I must get Arthur back! I am sure Merlin wouldn’t wish for Camelot to fall because of him.”

“His fault?!” The rage in her voice resonated clearly, taking the king by surprise.

“Blame is on you Uther Pendragon. You have weakened Camelot! Your ways have been unkind especially to people like us! Even your own son has turned against you.” She sneered viciously, each sentence ruthless than the previous.

“Please, my lady. I just want to talk to Merlin…I swear on my life that I have no intentions of hurting that sorcerer. Only he can save the lives in Camelot!”

Freya took the king’s words into consideration because she knew Merlin personally. Merlin would put others over his own life anytime thus, he would wish to be told that Camelot and its people are in danger.

His friends are still there…Merlin would want to save them.

“Return first Uther Pendragon. If Merlin wishes to meet, he will come to you. You have sworn on sacred land to not harm him, you shan’t go back on your words.” Was Freya’s last words before she disappeared into the lake.

As expected, Merlin arrived at the lake the day after. He was greeted with a warm welcome, the land and its magic all welcomed him. He healed and rested comfortably there before arriving at Lake Avalon.

It has been awhile since he last came in contact with other magic-beings, it felt strange but pleasant.

When he arrived at the ledge of the lake, he called for Freya repeatedly and only at his fifth call did she appear from the water, greeting Merlin with that same smile from the first day they met in Camelot.

The last time Merlin saw Freya, she was frail and still cursed but now, she flourished beautifully and still carried that kind heart.

“Merlin, how have you been?” She smiled but Merlin didn’t know how to reply to a simple question.

“I have heard some matters about you but wasn’t sure if they were true.” She continued after noticing Merlin’s reluctance to reply.

“They are most likely true.” Merlin responded with an awkward smile.

“You and Arthur are finally together?”

Her question was abrupt rendering Merlin speechless but it was the answer Freya needed as she laughed heartily.

“Freya, you called me here. What happened?” Merlin asked, bringing them both to the main agenda. “Camelot. It is at the verge of war because Arthur is not there. I am sorry to say this but Merlin, Arthur needs to return. He has to fulfill his destiny! His reign cannot begin when he is not there.” She spoke in a solemn tone.

“But Arthur will not return. Not without me…And I can’t return. If I do, it’s death.” Merlin mumbled sadly and Freya knew how much this would hurt her friend.

“Uther Pendragon doesn’t have much time left…So does Arthur. If Camelot is left without a leader, I am afraid that Camelot WILL fall.”

“Arthur is destined to be the once and future king and I am in his way aren’t I Freya?” Merlin scoffed at himself, how pathetic of a man he was.

He had always known he was a liability and would only bring Arthur down with him but coming to terms with the fact hurts like hell.

“Merlin, you know that is not what I meant.”

“But how did you know?” Merlin questioned Freya whose expression changed then.

“Someone came to me for assistance to seek you out. He has come to speak with you but I have sent him away."

"Only if you are willing to meet him, I shall tell you his location. That person is Uther Pendragon. I saw him with my very eyes, he has grown weak and old…He is desperate for Arthur’s return.”

Merlin never would have thought he would ever hear that name again, the king who sentenced him to death without a second thought.

The very same king has turned to magic due to his own desperation, how ironic .

“He wishes to speak with me?” Merlin had to ask again, ensuring his ears were not playing tricks on him. Freya nodded firmly once more.

“So, will you meet him?” Freya asked and Merlin pondered for a minute long before agreeing.

-

Back in Carmarthen, Xander was pacing back and forth in his house whilst glancing up at his door, hoping for Merlin’s return.

Merlin had promised to be away for only a day but it had already been three, he was starting to regret promising to keep Merlin’s real departure from Arthur. Merlin may not have told either of them the truth but Arthur may be the only person who could come close to understanding Merlin.

Finally, he decided to call Arthur into the house in the middle of his training.

-

- Arthur’s POV -

In the midst of correcting my trainees' posture, I heard Xander call for me. Usually he wouldn’t disturb me during training so today was a first. Surprised, I made my way into his house as he shut the door behind us.

“Is everything alright Xander?” I asked as I carefully studied him. Why was he nervous?

“Have you heard from Merlin?” He suddenly asked but I smiled and shook my head, “Don’t worry Xander, sometimes Merlin loves to take his time running errands.”

It was based on past experiences where Merlin would disappear for days without informing me but would magically reappear again after.

“Arthur, I haven’t been honest with you these past few days and I am not sure where to begin.” Xander started which caught Arthur’s fullest attention.

“A few days ago, Merlin came to me in the middle of the night and pleaded for me to keep his departure a secret. He isn’t running an errand for me…He wouldn’t tell me where he was going too but to only inform you he is away running errands for me.” Xander explained and I felt my heart pick-up speed.

“What…What do you mean?” I stuttered, my heartbeat growing louder in my ears that I could barely hear Xander anymore until I forced myself to focus and remain calm.

“He looked anxious as though he was racing against time…I tried to get him to leave at dawn but he refused. He promised me he would only be gone for a day! But…He hasn’t come back since. I am very worried!” His words sent alarm bells ringing in my mind, I was utterly lost and unsure of what to do.

Neither Xander nor I knew where Merlin had gone, how the hell was I supposed to know where to find that idiot?!

“WHICH WAY DID MERLIN GO?” My voice came out sharper than I had expected.

I was furious that Xander would lie to me, hide the truth just because Merlin told him to.

"North.” Was all I heard before I took off as fast as I could.

Tears began streaming down my face uncontrollably while I grabbed one of Xander’s spare horses and rode up north.

It fucking hurts, after so many promises Merlin still went on to LIE AGAIN. And each time, I would believe him as if I was a fool on replay. We promised to face the future TOGETHER but he is constantly leaving me behind and acting like a hero.

Now, my worst fears have come true because I have absolutely no clue where that man went or why he decided to leave abruptly.

- End of Arthur’s POV -

Merlin arrived at a small town located near the lake, it didn’t take him long before finding the inn that the king was supposingly residing in. Freya directed him there but he was a little hesitant, he was afraid to meet the king after so long of hiding. But he swore to not hurt him .

Sighing, he mustered up his courage and went inside and up to his room. He knocked on the door once before it slowly opened for him, revealing a frail looking king.

He has completely changed compared to the last time he saw the king back in court. Freya wasn’t lying when she insisted Uther Pendragon’s time was almost up. But looking at him in this state made Merlin feel uncomfortable. He didn’t know how to behave or do, he is the king that hated him to the core but he is also Arthur’s father.

“Sire.” Merlin lowered his head to greet him but the king didn’t say anything, instead, he granted Merlin entrance.

- Merlin’s POV -

“No need to be wary Merlin, I won’t kill you as promised. I am too frail as you may notice.” Uther said, his tone carrying underlying poison, making me feel uneasy. “Sire, I heard you wish to speak with me. I dare say your methods are rather…Unexpected.” I hinted at Uther using magic to contact me but the king paid it no attention.

“I am here to strike a bargain with you. Merlin, you are a wise man and I am sure you only want what’s best for Camelot, the villagers and your friends.” Uther explained.

“Cenred’s army is closing in on Camelot and I am too weak to defend Camelot. If war was to happen, casualties would be too much to bear, your friends’ lives would be on the line as well. I am sure you wouldn’t want that. Only you can prevent this tragedy from happening…”

I listened closely and felt my heart constrict in my chest. Faces of the knights, Gwen, Gaius and Morgana flashed in front of my eyes, they are innocent yet implicated in my battle. Clenching my fists tightly, I carried on listening to what Uther has to say.

“I just want my son back. I just want him home…Back to where he belongs. Merlin, I am sure you could understand?”

“But Arthur would not return without me.” I insisted but the king only laughed cruelly, “I am making a deal with you, not Arthur."

"Get Arthur back to Camelot and I shall grant you exile, wherever you wish to go I don’t care. I will lift the death sentence on you but you must never show your face in front of Arthur nor in Camelot. Do we have a deal Merlin?”

“Arthur will not be harmed then if he returns?” I eyed him skeptically, watching him take a seat on his bed, probably drained with fatigue.

“Arthur wouldn’t want this. I can’t betray him after all that he has done for me…If he has to return, so do I.” After much consideration, I stood my ground firmly earning a sneer from the king but he was too weak to refute.

“As long as I am still alive, no sorcerer will live in Camelot! Do not test my patience Merlin, I have given you an option, you should be wise and take it! Arthur must never know of our meeting today as well as our little bargain.” Uther exclaimed, his anger causing a fit of cough to occur.

“Then it’s a goodbye sire. I am sure Camelot is in the good hands of Morgana.” I bowed politely and smirked after noticing the change in his expression. I was right indeed, it was a hunch but I never expected Morgana to be fully invested in court matters .

“Before you leave I have to live up to my end of the deal. The dragon wishes to see you.” Uther spat in between breaths which caught me off guard. Dragon? As in Kilgharrah? Why would Kilgharrah strike a deal with a man like Uther Pendragon?

A trick or not by Uther Pendragon, I had my own ways to find out. I am a dragonlord after all.

-

Calling upon the dragon in Homeric Greek, I looked up into the sky.

I stood in an empty patch of grassland as I waited patiently for my calling to be heard. As a matter of fact, it did and Kilgharrah came swooping down, landing in front of me.

“Young warlock you have finally come.” His voice is still as calm and ancient as before.

“You told Uther about the Lake of Avalon? And how to contact me?” I demanded and he did not deny. So, Uther was speaking the truth .

“I have heard great things about you but running away with the prince was the most unexpected. Two sides of the same coin, your bond surely does run deeper than I thought.” He stated as a matter of fact but he wasn’t judging our relationship.

Yet, he had a disapproving look.

“Merlin, you must be aware of your own actions. You are stopping Arthur from being the king. Without him, the land and magic cannot be reunited…” Kilgharrah warned but was there simply no other way?

“Do I really have to leave, for him to be king?”

Kilgharrah did not answer that question but deep down, I already knew the answer.

Sighing, I requested to be sent back to Carmarthen which he didn’t take lightly but I was a dragonlord, he had to listen to me. “I am not a horse Merlin!” He yelled before reluctantly taking off. He couldn't disobey a dragonlord's command.

- End of Merlin’s POV -

Chapter 13: Truth Be Told

Summary:

Xander discovering the truth and Arthur and Merlin just finding their way through their fight.

Notes:

Welcome back to returning readers! <3
Thank you for sticking around for this long, much appreciated!

Just want to say, I don't really like the way I wrote this chapter so if it's bad...Let me apologize in advance. It took me a couple of weeks to finish this chapter so hopefully it isn't THAT bad-

There will be angst...There will be heartbreak (kinda)? And! And soft moments too.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Merlin thanked Kilgharrah after arriving just outside Carmarthen, he would have to continue the rest by foot as he didn’t wish for anyone to be alarmed with the presence of a huge dragon.

His mind was muddled with too much information that he felt he needed time to sort and think it through but now what he needed was to rest.

On the other hand, he didn’t know how to face Arthur after everything. He was excited yet dreadful to see the prince again, what should he tell his friend if he asked how his errands went?

Firstly, he decided to drop by Xander’s to inform the elderly of his return before heading home. However, just as he was about to enter his yard, he felt a strong pair of arms around his waist and the other covering his mouth as he was being dragged behind a corner.

He was close to releasing himself with magic until he realized who it was.

“Arthur!” His voice was muffled by the hand over his mouth as Arthur signalled for him to remain silent.

Slowly, he glanced towards where Arthur was staring at and to his horror, knights bearing Camelot’s sigil and red capes walking out of Xander’s house.

Merlin’s eyes widened with fear and a wave of panic hit him when he saw Elias hiding behind his mother, wrapped tightly around his mother’s waist and his face covered with fear.

Did Xander get caught? Did the knights know they were hiding at Xander’s? Did they threaten them?

Million thoughts ran through Merlin’s mind but one stood out and repeated itself to Merlin, ‘ It was all his fault.’

“Arthur, what are we going to do?” Merlin whispered anxiously but he shook his head and told to wait out here a little longer.

Only when the knights had left completely, Arthur turned to look at Merlin. His eyes were filled with so much mixed emotions, Merlin found it difficult to comprehend but he said the one thing he could, “I’m sorry.”

“We’ll talk later. Now, we have to speak with Xander and clear ourselves. I am sure they are confused and they deserve answers from us.” Arthur’s voice was cold and he was the first to stand up and make a move to Xander’s.

-

Everything happened so abruptly with Xander looking shocked to see Arthur and Merlin so quickly after the knights had left but he was also relieved to see Merlin.

The duo ended up on their knees in front of Xander and his wife as they apologized profusely to the couple then pleaded with them to not leak their information to the knights if they were to return.

“You deserve the truth more than anyone, we apologize for the shock that the knights may have caused. Elias I am sorry as well.” Merlin began and turned to the little boy who quickly ran over to give him a hug, “I remembered Merlin saying that knights in red are bad so I got afraid when they started questioning about you and Arthur.” Merlin smiled sadly as he stroked the boy’s hair out of habit.

“They are searching for us not because we are wanted criminals! I am truly sorry for the scare."

"They are looking for us because…Because I am the Prince of Camelot and Merlin is my manservant. My father found out about Merlin’s magic and sentenced him to death but I simply could not sit by and watch my best friend burn to death so we ended up running away together. We are terribly sorry for hiding the truth but we had no choice.” Arthur explained and Xander exchanged a look with his wife who was equally in disbelief.

“I believe you guys would not lie to us. However, we are still in shock that all along a prince was staying with us…And working for me? A privilege that I should not have!” Xander exclaimed as his cheeks burned with embarrassment.

“Xander please, I am no longer the prince of Camelot. In fact, I like it when people do not treat me indifferently so please.”

“Why would someone with magic work in Camelot? The most dangerous place for sorcerers…And to be working in the royal family!” Xander stared at Merlin with astonishment.

“That’s why we are living in exile now.” Merlin responded awkwardly.

“You wouldn’t have to worry. We did not tell the knights anything, we simply have not seen these faces in our entire life.” Xander quickly told them and they relaxed.

“Please stand up first and carry on talking.” The lady requested with a smile so Merlin and Arthur finally stood up with a thankful expression.

“We have spent a great amount of time together and we have grown to know each other. I trust both of you still and you guys are welcome to stay in Carmarthen as long as you wish.” Xander assured them.

With Xander’s assurance, it was as though a heavy burden had been lifted from their shoulders. They didn’t need to hide their identity any longer and they were grateful for Xander and his family.

-

Merlin knew they were far from done after returning back home. He saw how Arthur ignored him each time he tried to strike a conversation. Each time he got close, Arthur would brush him off and turn away coldly.

“Arthur, I am so sorry.”

“Enough. I am done with hearing you apologize Merlin, because you never mean it! You apologize but you will always do it again! You lie! You leave me in the dark! Honestly, Merlin I am absolutely SICK AND TIRED of you hiding things from me.” Arthur exploded with fury as he waited for what the other had to say.

“Arthur, I-I need…need you to trust me.” Merlin stuttered and seeing that he didn’t want to speak the truth, irritated Arthur immensely.

His fists moved faster than his mind when he roughly grabbed Merlin by his collar. He wanted to land a hit across this man’s face so badly but it was the very same face that made him hold back. He could never hurt Merlin .

“Why? WHY! Why is it so difficult to just tell me the truth? Don’t speak to me again if you are not ready to tell me the truth.” He hissed in annoyance before releasing Merlin’s tunic causing the man to stumble a few steps back.

He swung his fist towards the wall instead, filled with all his pent up frustrations which caused a dent and he ended up with a bloody fist.

“Arthur!” But before Merlin could stop him, the prince was already out of the door.

*** ***

- Merlin’s POV -

The next few days, Arthur was firm on his own words by not speaking to me at all. He would only acknowledge my presence at Xander’s and the times when Xander has informed me to relay him a message.

If not, we were simply strangers.

And when we got home, the house felt cold and empty despite our presence. Whenever I entered the same room Arthur was, he would leave without speaking a word.

Heaving a deep sigh, I settled down at the tiny table in our shared room, pulling out a parchment paper and a quill. Mumbling under my breath, eyes glowing, before the quill in hand became enchanted.

It was a small spell that I had encountered in the marketplace after witnessing another sorcerer exchange letters magically.

After writing his letter, the ink would disappear then words that weren’t written by him would magically appear on the exact same parchment.

I was absolutely fascinated after being told that was how he communicated with his friend from another region that I had to try it with Morgana!

The only downside is, the exchange of letters can only be between two magic-users thus the first time I tried this trick, it took her by surprise.

Now, I needed answers desperately and Morgana was the only person I could turn to.

Dear Morgana,

How have you been? And everyone else?

I have come across some troubling news in hopes that may not be true…Please enlighten me.

Camelot is currently facing political unrest because Arthur isn’t there? Is war really at your doors?

From,

Merlin

It took only minutes before Morgana’s words began appearing on my parchment and I read on with a frown.

Dear Merlin,

Thank goodness you are alright.

We have not heard from you or Arthur for awhile, I am glad that you have written.

Where did you get this news from? Cenred has been plotting against Camelot for ages but I have been trying my hardest to prevent him from succeeding. Unfortunately, Uther has become useless in court, in fact, he has not been showing up for days.

A kingdom without a strong leadership is indeed dangerous but please don’t worry. I have been working closely with the knights and we believe that we can prevent this war from occurring.

Sincerely,

Morgana

Quickly, I picked up my quill again and penned down my immediate response. Each word written has settled with determination of my future decisions. I have to make things right, it is the only way .

Morgana,

Should you require any assistance, magic or not, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Merlin

Uther’s words lined up with Morgana’s which meant war was indeed waged on Camelot. Arthur needed to return! I kept away the parchment and quill into a drawer before turning around to look at what Arthur was doing.

Would Arthur hate me for telling him the truth now? Then, would he agree to go back to Camelot?

“Arthur!”

“Let’s talk.” I wasn’t giving him a choice this time. The moment I noticed him glancing at our front door, I immediately closed it shut with my magic. Staring at me in disbelief, he proceeded to enter our shared bedroom with his arms folded over his chest defensively.

- End of Merlin’s POV -

-

“So you have been hearing voices in your head and it turns out to be the lady from Avalon? She requested your assistance on some magic matters as Emrys? And you were gone because of that?” Arthur repeated what Merlin relayed to him, as if processing it verbally was easier.

“Has it been resolved?” Arthur questioned but Merlin shook his head. That was the truth at least .

“I still don’t understand why you found it difficult to tell me.” Arthur was still fixated on this matter but Merlin had no answer for it, he could not think of any plausible excuse .

“I didn’t want you to follow. It could have been dangerous!” Merlin exclaimed but Arthur was still staring at him with the same expression, “And it wasn’t dangerous for you?”

That simple question was enough to force Merlin’s mouth shut instantaneously. How was he suppose to answer that?

“Merlin, answer me this. Have you ever…Ever considered me as someone whom you could trust…? Could rely on?”

“Because I have. Since the very beginning, I trusted you! I did EVERYTHING to make sure you were safe. Must I remind you Merlin that we are in this together! I AM HERE FOR YOU, YOU ARE NOT ALONE ANYMORE. So please Merlin, stop making rash decisions on your damn own!”

“Arthur, it’s not as easy as you may seem!”

“THEN HELP ME UNDERSTAND!” Arthur raised his voice once more. Both equally frustrated with one another yet none was willing to give in this time.

Merlin had his own worries, his own reasons yet Arthur had his own beliefs to understand better. The only one stopping him was Merlin.

“You wouldn’t.” Merlin’s last words were as cold as ice and with one last glance, he stormed out of their home.

Without turning back, he heard Arthur call for him. His heart ached terribly, wanting to apologize and spill the truth to Arthur but he knew he couldn’t.

To fulfill his destiny…

Merlin, he is running out of time…

If returning Arthur back to where he belongs, giving up on their likely future together in order to prevent a war from waging.

It could save his friends lives, hundreds even thousands more lives could be saved then what would sacrificing his own really mean? It’s not like he hasn’t done it before (placing everyone else above him).

He felt hot tears streaming down his cheeks at the thought of needing to leave Arthur.

In fact, this might be the last time he would get to see Arthur ever again. He wasn't exactly sure how to react…

Seated by the lake, Merlin allowed his magic to react with its surroundings. As though it has a mind of its own, it made the water move revealing flashes of images that shocked Merlin himself.

Camelot appeared followed by the knights…Guinevere, Morgana and Gaius…All familiar faces flashed before him but something odd was happening.

Their heads were bowed for a long time yet smiles could be seen across all faces.

“Long live the king!” Leon chanted before the image broke then followed by another instantly.

Villagers of Camelot were happy, living peacefully, surrounded with happiness and most definitely magic. It was only a glimpse yet Merlin caught it.

Crops were well maintained and harvested with magic, armour and weapons were made stronger than iron with magic…Camelot was flourishing!

“What was that?” Was the same question in Merlin’s head yet Arthur was the first to speak up.

He quickly turned around to face the prince who had unknowingly stood behind him for god knows how long. He didn’t know how long he had been standing there but Merlin was sure, it was long enough to see what he saw.

The water calmed back to its original state after Merlin stopped channeling his magic then made space for Arthur. “Your destiny…Your future.” Merlin replied with a proud smile.

“But Leon called me king…” Arthur was scratching his head in disbelief, unsure of whether to believe what Merlin’s magic had just conjured.

“Arthur, you are destined to be Camelot’s king. There is nothing that will change that fact…It is in fact your future.” Merlin insisted then hesitatingly, he placed his hand over his to give the prince comfort he needed.

“Merlin, it is our future. I am sure of it.” Arthur stated before turning his hand over to interlock their fingers together.

It was such a small gesture but in Merlin’s eyes, it was the biggest, melting his heart in the process. He choked back tears that suddenly formed in his eyes, he refused to cry in front of Arthur but his reaction only made Arthur chuckle.

If Arthur only knew…

Reaching out his other hand, he helped Merlin wipe the tears away without saying anything else.

They sat in absolute silence, neither spoke a word but simply admired the night by the lake.

Until Arthur finally apologized, “I’m sorry for my previous outburst Merlin. I never meant for us to fight like that. As much as I want to know the truth, I shouldn’t have pressured you like that. I was afraid you would get hurt when I wasn’t by your side but watching you walk out of that door felt like I was watching you walking out on me, I was terrified…”

“Can we please never fight again?”

Never would he have imagined Arthur pleading to never get into a fight with him.

Merlin was so bloody sure he had fallen deeply in love with his best friend yet Arthur has proven him wrong time and time again by creating new reasons and ways for Merlin to love him even more.

Without thinking any longer, Merlin leaned in to kiss Arthur’s lips. All his emotions settled into a flaming passion that only gave Merlin the courage to deepen their kiss. It was the very first time Merlin initiated the kiss between them, in fact, it was his very first time.

Arthur’s free hand found its way around Merlin’s thin waist while Merlin’s was already on the back of Arthur’s neck to deepen their kiss.

He was kissing him as if it was their last… Merlin selfishly knew there was no ‘ifs’ anymore.

“Wait…Before I forget. Merlin, I wish for you to have this.” Arthur broke the kiss reluctantly, as they each took the opportunity to gasp for breath.

Merlin’s confusion was vividly shown on his face, wondering why Arthur would break the moment now until he realized what Arthur was pulling out of his trouser pocket, his dilated eyes then focused on the metal ring in hand.

“I’ve brought this with me wherever I went since I was a little boy. It is the last thing I have of my mother and Merlin, I want you to have it.” Arthur presented Merlin with his mother’s silver ring bearing her mother’s family sigil.

“Arthur, are you mad! I can’t have that! You must keep it with you…it’s your mothers’!” Merlin refused the gift as he knew how much it meant to Arthur. It was the only thing he could remember his mother by and he was not going to take that away!

“It is important…But you are too and I want you to have it. Plus, I want it to be a symbol of my promise to you.” He smiled like an idiot, feeling his heart racing against his chest as he confessed his love to Merlin.

“I want to be with you Merlin. I vow to be by your side forever no matter what happens. I’ll stand with you for as long as I live.” Slowly, the prince placed the ring in Merlin’s palm but the latter’s hand began to tremble.

The prince genuinely thought Merlin was shaking with happiness but it was entirely opposite.

The prince has just promised him forever but Merlin couldn’t. He would eventually leave Arthur’s side. For everyone else but himself, he couldn’t stay.

“Anyways…If your magic showed us the future. Why weren’t you there?” Arthur asked in a teasing manner but Merlin’s insides died a little yet he was forcing himself to smile.

Because there wouldn’t. He’ll be gone by then.

“It was my magic showing you the future you idiot, obviously it was from my perspective idiot.” One more white lie wouldn’t hurt , Merlin thought.

Everyone always thought Merlin’s magic was the greatest but truthfully and personally, it most definitely is his heart. A man overflowing with so much compassion for others but himself, always placing others over him is truly remarkable.

Notes:

* drumroll * We are almost towards the last portion of this story!

Just an additional note to end of this chapter: Some may think Arthur shouldn't forgive Merlin so easily (Honestly, same. If I was in his shoes.) BUT someone got to make the first move to talk things out and I always get the feeling it has to be from Arthur. Merlin hides his feelings along with other matters too much...)

& I guess I was too lazy to give Xander the chief a family name thus I just used 'his wife', sorry folks haha.

That's all from me thank you, love you all!
See you all soon!

Chapter 14: One Last Lie

Summary:

Merlin leaves.

Notes:

Not going to lie, I wrote this with a complete idea in mind but I feel Merlin deserves some more.

Before starting this story, I had "an original script" - I would say. But now, I am confident that I had gone completely off script. I always preferred a short story but now, I am changing my mind.

Also, apologies on a late update! I have been busy with work lately so thank you all for waiting!

Enjoy.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

That night after their chat by the lake, they retired back into their hut but only Arthur managed to drift off to sleep.

Even though he had already made his decision, he was still greatly affected by what Arthur said that night. It caused a huge dilemma that Merlin could not move on from.

With a sigh, he slipped out of bed and quietly walked out of the house and towards the lake once again.

He played with the silver ring Arthur gave only a few hours prior, twirling it cautiously around his fingers yet he never dared to slip it onto his finger.

He replayed the scenes with his magic once again, taking it all in. His gold eyes slowly watered as he recalled what Arthur mentioned, “If your magic showed us the future. Why weren’t you there?”

Because there wouldn’t be a future if Merlin was there.

He couldn’t bring himself to reject Arthur’s gift then but now he was regretting not speaking up. Would Arthur hate him more after he had accepted his present? The prince may have seen it as Merlin agreeing to stay by his side forever.

Only for him to betray him completely.

He started bawling his eyes out, something he would always refrain from doing but Arthur owned his heart completely.

Hurting him was like stabbing himself in the chest, it fucking hurts .

But it is what needs to be done.

Truthfully, he did not know what would be the best way to leave.

He wanted to leave peacefully, to ensure Arthur knows his true feelings were never a bluff. Hence, he did what he knew best.

He wrote Arthur his first and also last letter.

-

Dreading to leave their warm bed at seven in the morning, Merlin ultimately got up to make Arthur breakfast and tidy their home for the last time.

Even in his sleep, the prince made it difficult for him to leave.

His heavy arms draped securely over Merlin’s waist trapped him against Arthur’s chest.

He tried to remain as quiet as possible but while cooking, he needed to use a little magic to ensure he wouldn’t wake the prince.

Today they had the day off which meant Arthur was most likely going to sleep in. He was counting on that .

Wiping away the subconscious tears, he took one last glance around the place he and Arthur called home for the past few months, then at the food on the table.

Lastly, his letter. Folded neatly beside Arthur’s bowl and his mother’s ring… He felt bad but he would feel worse if he took it away with him .

That was the last that needed to be done, Merlin grabbed his bags that were already packed before closing the door behind him for good.

However just as he stepped outside, he met eyes with Elias who just so happens to be making his way to school.

The drowsiness from the little boy’s eyes instantly left and was replaced with glinting energy. “Merlin!” He exclaimed in joy and ran towards the older man who was frozen to his spot.

Instinctively, he hid his bags behind his back, away from the boy’s eyes.

“Merlin, good morning! Where are you going so early in the morning?” He beamed with his usual happiness towards Arthur and Merlin.

Forcing a smile, Merlin bent down and pulled Elias into a tight hug.

“Merlin, are you alright?” The boy asked after sensing something off with his behaviour.

“Little guy, will you take care of yourself in school?” He didn’t know what else to say but at the same time he couldn’t leave Elias without saying goodbye.

“Of course!”

“I’ll miss you Elias. Very much.” He broke the hug to look at the boy’s face once more, stroking his soft cheeks as a comforting gesture.

“I’ll see you after school Merlin! I’ll need help with homework again.” He giggled lightly but Merlin didn’t have the heart to correct him.

“Of course, I am sure Arthur will help you. Now I wouldn’t want to hold you back any longer or else you will be late!” Merlin quickly stood up to wipe his tears and waved Elias goodbye. “Goodbye Elias.”

“See you later.” He innocently responded before skipping towards the direction of his school.

The sun was slowly rising to its highest which meant Merlin didn’t have much time left.

Sighing, he took one last glance back at their hut before heading out of Carmarthen and towards Ealdor. If he were to continue up East, he would reach Ealdor by nightfall.

However it also meant he was closer to Essetir, Cenred’s territory. He needed to stay low then and hoped no one would recognize him.

He may have escaped Uther’s wrath but King Cenred was known to be equally if not more ruthless than King Uther.

He did not loathe sorcerers like Uther, instead, he would use them for his own gains.

By the time Arthur awoke from his sleep, it was already afternoon.

His hands naturally extended to reach for Merlin but to his surprise, Merlin’s side of the bed was cold to his touch.

It meant Merlin was up for hours without bothering to wake Arthur. It was very unlikely but Arthur didn’t complain, he had always loved to sleep in.

“Merlin.” He called out lazily but there was no response.

He called out once again, this time more awake but still he was greeted with silence.

Sighing, he dragged himself out of bed and made his way out of the room.

The dining table has long been set and prepared with food which made Arthur smile fondly.

‘He must have gone out.’ Arthur thought carelessly before taking his usual spot at the table.

He was eyeing the delicious spread of food that Merlin had prepared for him and was ready to dig in until he saw the neatly folded letter on the table.

It had his name written on it with Merlin’s handwriting and beside it was his mother’s ring that he gifted the man previously.

His heart began to race as his mind could only think of the worst possible scenarios yet his heart was hoping it wasn’t true.

Hesitatingly, he picked up the letter with shaky hands and slowly unfolded the letter.

Simply reading the first sentence tore Arthur apart.

It was the absolute worst thing that Merlin could ever do to him. Merlin left him. Merlin left him without saying goodbye .

Tears fell almost instantly as he forced himself to continue reading.

-

Dear Arthur,

Good morning you prat, if you are seeing this, I should already be long gone.

Don't blame yourself because this is my own choice. I never wished for all of these to happen, especially the dangers that have befallen on you.

Before you start running hysterically mad, please hear me out and finish this letter.

These past few months when we are on a run I've been thinking greatly and it made me realize how selfish I was for taking you away from where you truly belong.

Destinies cannot be changed and you Arthur, is destined to rule Camelot. The Once and Future King. (Believe me it may seem hard to believe at first because that's how I reacted when I was first told of such a prophecy. But Arthur it is the truth and I can see it in you.)

Put some faith in yourself! Because you will be a greater king for your people and me…I will be especially proud of you!

Knowing that your safety is guaranteed when you return was another reason why I left so hastily.

You don't have to worry about me and please don't be sending search parties to find me… Allow me to serve my exile on my own and in peace.

You don't have to worry about me, I will probably visit my mum again at Ealdor before I leave.

Lastly, do take care because now I won't be by your side anymore…Looking out for you.

And I'm sorry once more for lying again and leaving like this.

I am not capable of promising you forever thus I shall return you your mother’s ring.

The number of times I have let you down, especially this, is unjustifiable thus I will understand if you grow to hate me.

This isn't a goodbye but simply a see you later.

I'll be back when you need me Arthur, it's my oath to you.

I love you.

Yours'

Merlin

-

By the time Arthur reached the end of the letter, his hands were shaking.

The piece of paper crumpled by his tight grasp. Tears formed in his eyes once again for Merlin, as part of him wanted to scream, yell and, find Merlin, to drag him back to his side but the other half knew he shouldn't.

He began thrashing his surroundings, whatever he could get his hands on were either broken or damaged. Furniture was all flung around and a few of the windows got broken in the meantime but Arthur did not care.

He was blinded with rage and being in their house was only making it worse.

Everything around him reminded him of Merlin, their home held the most memories.

Then came a knock at the front door.

Arthur looked up in hopes for it to be Merlin but it soon faded away when he heard whom it was.

“Arthur! Merlin? What’s going on in there?” Xander’s voice sounded frantic as his knocks gradually became louder.

The door came bursting down as Xander found Arthur sitting on the floor surrounded by the mess he made.

Following behind the village chief came Elias who practically threw himself at Arthur, consoling him and trying to figure out what was going on.

“Arthur, what happened?” Xander questioned but instead of replying, Arthur simply passed him the letter Merlin left and pulled Elias into his embrace.

He cried on that little boy’s shoulders and when Xander finally understood the situation, he bent down to place a comforting hand over Arthur’s shoulder.

“Elias, could you help Arthur up please. I’ll get someone over here to fix and clean the damages.” Xander spoke softly to his son and he obeyed, quickly supporting Arthur to his feet.

Arthur stayed at Xander’s for the next few days because he didn’t know how to live in that house anymore.

He was alone, everywhere he was…Memories would haunt him.

Memories of him and Merlin were too much, he simply couldn’t stand it . Worst of all, he would constantly find himself staring at his mother’s ring and it would always bring him back to that night at the lake. The time they spent together…The promise he made to him. Everything.

Truthfully, he wasn’t sure how he managed these past few days.

Everything went by in a blur but the only faces he knew were Elias, Xander and his wife. But no Merlin .

He would mostly isolate himself in the spare room of Xander’s house. He even dropped training completely.

At Ealdor

Merlin recognized the forest, the trees and the freshness of air. He could remember everything from the back of his hand, even if he hasn’t returned in years.

He missed his hometown and his mother.

Before stepping inside the small village, he took a deep breath and repeated to himself religiously, Do not cry. Do not show signs of sadness. Do not let mother worry .

Forcing a smile out, he made his way into the village.

It was in the evening when the villagers were preparing to retire for the night which meant the streets were empty by the time he walked in.

The only light source guiding him back home was coming from inside the house.

It was a small village, they didn’t need light outside. He stood outside his own home, hesitating for a long while.

He was starting to have second thoughts on whether coming back was the best choice.

Until, the door in front of him swung open which caused his brain to go blank instantly.

“Mother.” He gasped softly while he took in the frail look of his mother.

He hasn’t seen her in years and she had more wrinkles on her face. Her small figure wrapped tightly in a red scarf that Merlin remembered she used to hold.

“Merlin?” She was surprised by his presence. “What are you doing here?”

“Mum!” His walls came crumbling down along with tears he withheld back.

He launched himself into his mother’s warm embrace, he missed his mother dearly.

“My dear boy, come on in! You must be tired!” She led Merlin into the house and helped him with his bags. “Go and take a bath and get some rest.” She instructed but Merlin stopped for a second, “Aren’t you going to ask me what is going on?”

“Not tonight dear. Explanations can wait for tomorrow, you need to get some rest now.” She consoled and Merlin smiled gratefully before obeying his mother.

- Merlin’s POV -

The next morning, I was awoken by my mother’s voice. I thought I was hallucinating but then I remembered I ran away from Carmarthen. This is reality .

Surprisingly, mum knew more than I had thought. She knew I was exiled with Arthur and on the run from Camelot’ knights.

“When your friends Leon and Lancelot came to break the news to me, I was petrified! They came in search of you but I had no idea so much had happened. After that, I tried to look for you on my own but to no avail. Merlin, I thought I would never see you again.” Mum explained with a sigh which made me guilty.

I made my mother worry for nothing…I should have written her a letter but I was too caught up with starting a brand new life with Arthur and staying hidden, I forgot.

In fact, I never wanted her to know because it would only make her worry or even place her in danger.

“You did not perhaps tell them that I was here right?” I asked hopefully and she shook her head, “Would you like me to?”

“Please no. I wouldn’t want them to. In fact, I left Arthur mum…I can’t go back to him. I’ve given him up so he could be where he rightfully belongs.” Lowering my head, I avoided my gaze from her as I began to think of how Arthur was doing, could he be back at Camelot already?

“Oh my poor boy…I can tell how much that decision must have bothered you. You did the right thing.” She stroked my hair just like how she would always do when I was a kid yet it only made me sadder, sobbing into my palms.

“He hates me. Arthur hates me.” I cried even harder this time.

“I don’t think so my dear boy. The first time Arthur came to Ealdor with you I could already tell how fond he was of you. I could only imagine how that fondness must have grown over the years for him to run away with you just so you wouldn’t die. He likes you Merlin. He likes you a lot.” Mum stated firmly.

It was comforting for mother to accept the love Arthur and I shared for each other was irreplaceable. In fact, she accepted it long before I even realized it.

I could still recall the day Arthur came to Ealdor to help defend the village against bandits that had been terrorizing the villagers. I always thought he did it for the villagers but mum said he was here for me…

“Give him more credit than that. It is obvious he likes you.”

Chapter Text

*** ***

Weeks passed in a flash, soon it turned into a month when Arthur finally made his decision to return back to Camelot.

Without Merlin, his days ahead lost their meaning and became dull.

He was only there for Xander and his family, Arthur continued to train the men while helping Elias with school work. That was when Xander pulled him into the house one afternoon and informed him of the war waged on Camelot.

He was dumbfounded that Cenred would do such a thing but it also made him realize it was because his father had become ill. He was too sick to rule Camelot so Cenred took that advantage to strike.

They needed help…They needed Prince Arthur.

As much as he couldn’t bear to leave Carmarthen, Camelot needed him.

His friends and people needed him! In fact, war wouldn’t do good to anyone.

Nearby villagers would suffer the most and Carmarthen is of close proximity.

The only right decision is for Arthur to head back.

- Arthur’s POV -

“Do you really have to leave?” Elias' goodbye words to me were so heart wrenching, it rendered me speechless.

Kneeling before him, I dried away his unshed tears and whispered, “You are as brave as a knight Elias, I am sure you will do well in protecting and helping your parents, yes?”

“I’ll grow up to be a knight just like you Arthur! I want to be your knight.” He exclaimed and it made me smile. “Of course, my doors will always be open for you.”

“Will I see you again?” He asked innocently but all I could do was look up at Xander helplessly.

He also had a sad smile plastered on his face while he watched Elias speak to me.

“I believe we will. I promise.” I promise on my knight code and everything I hold dear to me. I will be back at Carmarthen with Merlin. I swear!

Just then, Elias reached out his small hands and wiped at my eyes before saying, “Knights can’t cry.”

I was startled by his actions because I didn’t realize I was even crying. I moved away from him, lightly brushing his hands away.

I have cried countless times in front of them that I wouldn’t want to add another on their impression on me.

“You are always welcomed back to Carmarthen, Arthur. Stay safe on your journey back.” Xander bid farewell and pulled Elias back.

One final goodbye, I turned away and left for Camelot.

Journey back to Camelot was lonely and slightly awkward, I never travelled anywhere without Merlin . But it only motivated me more to head back quicker.

I didn’t want to stay in the forest any longer than I have to.

-

As the sun rose, I also arrived just outside of Camelot’s gates.

On my way, I stumbled upon some bad news that had travelled with other travelers that I encountered in outskirt taverns.

Cenred is planning a magical attack on Camelot.

He had forcefully recruited sorcerers to help him in his plans and that made me very worried.

Partially I was worried for Camelot’s safety but on the other hand, I was extremely worried for Merlin.

I haven’t heard from him since and knew nothing of his location except that he went back to Ealdor. Worst of all, Ealdor is in Cenred’s territory.

What if Cenred discovered Merlin’s magic and forced him to be part of this war?

However, I also had faith in that prat. I am sure he would be able to defend the whole of Ealdor along with himself from anything, that is how strong Merlin’s magic is.

It felt weird to be back in Camelot again. Somehow it didn’t feel like home anymore

Slowly, I entered the marketplace and made my way directly to the castle. Villagers greeted me with a smile as if they weren’t aware I was missing for many months.

Father must have not disclosed my departure to the people .

When I arrived, I stood confidently at the doors of the castle, slightly tilting my head up so that the guards could see that I’ve returned, alone .

Quickly, I heard the guards shouting frantically as they ran around, announcing my return to the king or most likely everyone in the castle before surrounding me with their swords pointed towards me from all directions.

The world around me began to spin, my vision blurred and before I knew it, I collapsed onto my knees due to fatigue.

“What the hell do you think you are doing! It is treason to point your sword at the prince!” A familiar voice came behind and I slowly looked up, and found my trusted knights, Leon accompanied by Gwaine, Lancelot, Elyan and Percival. The knights of the round table.

Each of them looked equally surprised to see me or shocked to find me without Merlin.

“Apologies sire, but we are only acting under the King’s orders. We are informed to escort you to your chambers immediately and you are to remain there until his next orders.” The guards said but I made no move to get up so Leon ordered them to put their swords away and declared that the six of them would escort me up instead.

Lancelot was the first to act, making his way to my side as he supported my weight against him then Elyan supported me on the other.

“Arthur, are you alright?” Lancelot whispered but I simply nodded my head.

I was too tired to explain but I exchanged one knowing glance to Leon, promising to explain later.

He said nothing, instead, he began commanding the other knights back to their posts and what they should be doing next.

I knew then that Leon indeed took care of the knights when I was gone.

-

When I awoke from my sleep, I was back in my chambers.

The large soft bed I was once so used to now felt too big and uncomfortable for me. The small bed back in Carmarthen felt more inviting than this .

Sighing, I got out of bed and walked to my chair near the fireplace.

Before taking a seat, I pulled Merlin’s letter out from my pocket to reminisce.

“Why don’t you just use your magic?” “It feels weird to do magic in front of you, habit I suppose.”

“I guess it is something we both have to get used to now.”

The fire burned brightly in front of my eyes as our past conversations flashed through my mind.

Subconsciously, my fingers traced gently against Merlin's handwriting. I love you…Yours' Merlin.

And lastly on the small wet patches as small as water droplets beside the words 'I love you' made me cry for real this time.

My heart has never felt so full of love yet it aches like a thousand swords pierced through me.

Merlin cried as well when he was writing the letter and to make matters worse, I hadn't even told Merlin I loved him yet.

At the moment of realization, I never even told him! And now, I would never get the chance to.

'I think I fell for you the moment we fought with maces as I chased you down the marketplace. Because there was something about you that I just can't seem to put a finger on.' I thought miserably after coming to terms.

Suddenly, my doors burst open and a whole crowd came storming in. All with different expressions on their faces each.

I kept away Merlin’s letter as I stood up to greet them all.

“Why did you not tell us that you were going to return? You should have discussed it with us!” Morgana was the first to speak.

I hate to say this but I do miss Morgana’s sudden outbursts when things she doesn’t approve of occur.

“Haven’t seen you in a while Morgana, how have you been?” I ignored her question and asked her out of politeness.

Usually, that was how someone would greet one another when they haven’t seen each other in a long time but I guess it doesn’t apply to Morgana.

“Arthur, are you feeling better? You succumbed to a long duration of fatigue that caused you to faint this afternoon.” Gaius asked and I thanked him, I was feeling better after my sleep.

“I know you guys have millions of questions and I promise you I’ll answer them all. Could we all please calm down for a second, find somewhere to sit, I don’t care where and you may interrogate me as long as you please. Plus, I have all the time in the world after my father ordered for me to be locked up in here.” My voice came out like an order by accident when everyone started to grab a seat or ended up sitting on the floor silently.

*** ***

“So I am back because I heard Cenred has waged a war on us. It is not that I don’t trust your capabilities but if Camelot were to go into war, I wish to fight alongside you guys.” I finished explaining the reason why I came back so hastily and a gist of what happened in Carmarthen.

Then the long awaited question finally arose with Gwaine asking, “Then where is Merlin?”

“Gone.” Was all I could really say, it was a sour spot for me that brought endless sorrows that I just didn’t want to speak about.

“What? What do you mean gone Arthur! You promised to take care of him, how could you just leave him!” Gwaine, as one of Merlin’s best friends, got offended but I was the worst of all.

No one could be more angrier than me!

“Have you ever thought that perhaps it was Merlin who left me?!” I shouted in anger which caused Gwaine to settle back down on the floor with the help of Elyan.

The thought of someone doubting my feelings and what I could possibly do for Merlin aggravated me as the thought of wanting to slam Gwaine against the wall out of anger became prominent but somehow my legs felt too weak to stand on my own.

“Stop! Both of you! Arthur, you both need to calm down.” Elyan came between them, holding Gwaine down by his shoulder.

“You said you would explain…So what exactly happened? We all know Merlin wouldn’t willingly leave your side Arthur.” Guinevere finally spoke up, she was the only one who hadn’t spoken since entering my chambers.

“He left me when I was asleep…Didn’t really explain much but just spoke about my destiny to be king and I had to return. Guinevere I wish I knew of the answer myself but I don’t.” I sighed and relaxed back into my chair.

Their eyes were all fixated on me with equal sadness reflecting in their eyes.

“Now that we are done, I expect someone or all of you to fill me in on Camelot’s updates. I have to know what was going on when I wasn’t around. No lies please, I expect everything. If I were to stand in court, I wish to not look like a fool.” Leaning myself forward, I glanced around the room but lingered a few seconds longer on Leon, Morgana and Gaius.

“Of course Arthur.” Gaius was the first to speak before Leon took over and began reporting as if he was the first knight in court.

To my horror, Camelot was in an equally messy state as Merlin and I were whilst in exile. The way Leon reported and Gwaine’s subtle remarks melted my brain through.

I genuinely thought craziness was found with Merlin but they had other ways to shock me into oblivion.

I never would have believed such a mess occurred in my kingdom!

Worst has yet to come until Morgana casually mentions she has magic and everyone seems to not react to it.

“WHAT?” I was apparently the only one who looked shocked by this sudden news. “What do you mean you have magic?”

“As in just like Merlin? How did I only find out about this now?” I questioned eagerly, earning an eye roll from Morgana who lifted a hand at me, “You never found out about Merlin’s magic either when he was stuck to your waist almost every time.”

She has a point .

Then she and Gaius started explaining things slowly to me, including her special abilities and how it has helped her prevent Cenred from launching a successful attack on Camelot yet.

As time steadily flew by, I found myself opening up, feeling contented in a long while as we sat in my chambers to chat and laugh.

It made me realize how much I’ve missed my friends and also, how much Merlin would love to be here with us now…

Oh Merlin, how are you? Are you doing well?

I felt my eyes grow tired, only hearing the soft laughters of my friends as it became a soothing lullaby to my ears, did I drift off to sleep unknowingly.

-

-

The next day, I found myself waking up to a heartwarming sight. With light shining through my window, I was the first to wake.

The knights were all huddled together, all sleeping in their own positions which was odd yet comfortable.

Morgana snuggled close to Guinevere while she was sleeping close to Lancelot. Only Gaius returned to his chambers last night.

However, the moment I tried to make a move to stand up.

It alarmed Leon who shot up from his sleeping position, knocking Percival away in the process. “Sire.” He called out sleepily when he realized it was only me.

“My deepest apologies for sleeping in your chambers last night. We…We all chatted till late that we somehow dozed off after you.” He tried to explain but I only smiled and informed him I was alright with their company.

“What time is it?” He then asked and I looked outside the window, with the sun already up in the sky shining brightly, I was confident it was already late morning.

“Arthur, we are going to be late!” Leon exclaimed, jumping right up to his feet, his bed hair standing with him that I simply could not take him seriously.

“Late for?” I held my laughter in as I asked. In the midst of our conversation, the rest started to stir awake behind Leon.

“Court Arthur! The king instructed a court session today after your return! We cannot be late!” Leon explained and hearing that, everyone began scrambling to their feet and to the door so they could get ready with what little time they had left before heading for the courtroom.

“And no one informed me?”

“Oh princess, we just got too carried away last night that it slipped our mind. We most likely have an hour before it begins.” Gwaine added with that infamous grin of his.

“Do I have to remind you that I am practically a prisoner in my own chambers? And I have no manservant to assist me?” I glared daggers at him but he continued to grin while Leon smiled awkwardly.

“Oh come on princess, don’t tell me you didn’t learn any survival skills from Merlin when you two are together?” He teased and I was quick to grab my pillow, launching it full strength towards him.

“Get out.” I commanded and the duo instantly fled with smiles still on their faces.

Sighing, I went over to my cupboard to grab a few presentable tunics out.

If I was Merlin, which would I choose?

I did learn to dress myself as a matter of fact but Merlin was always the one who picked my clothes of the day.

He somehow knew which to wear on different occasions and days. Now, I have to choose something for a court session.

*** ***

Finally, I stood in the courtroom with a hundred pairs of eyes on me.

Fellow councilors and knights stood at the side while keeping their gazes on me.

The last time I ever stood before them in court, at the exact spot, facing the throne was when I pleaded for Merlin’s life.

Just then, the doors opened ajar revealing a frail looking king as he slowly made his way to the throne.

I was startled by my father's drastic deterioration, people said he was ill…I just never expected it to be this severe! He was assisted by a knight with Morgana walking behind him, her head lowered as she only sat after my father did.

As much as how much our beliefs and ways don’t align, a small part of me wanted to run up to him, asking how he was feeling. He is my father after all…

“Arthur, you are finally back.” Despite his weak demeanor, his voice was still firm and steady as he spoke in court.

“Father, how are you feeling?” I asked as I watched him straighten on his throne, seemingly needing more energy for him to simply sit there.

“There’s nothing to worry about me now. I am glad you have decided to return. Where is that sorcerer?” He questioned and I turned my gaze away from his, afraid that I might show emotions that I shouldn’t.

“Gone…He left. We parted ways and I never saw him again.” I stated simply, the people in court heard as they began whispering amongst themselves.

“I trust you.” His reply took me by surprise for a split second, I never would have expected my father to accept it so quickly.

I thought he would question me .

“I am sure you must have heard of what is going on in Camelot. Arthur, I expect you to take charge instantly and pick up your prince roles immediately and work with your knights to protect Camelot.” Father announced aloud before he fell into a fit of cough which Gaius ran up to check on him.

He raised his hand up high, silencing the whole room.

“Arthur shall not be allowed out of the kingdom apart from his prince duties for a whole year. That will be your punishment.” He ordered and before I could say anything, he stood up and quickly exited the room.

I watched as my father disappeared and I exchanged a glance with Morgana who shrugged then proceeded to exit the room with Gwen behind her.

“Did he say a year? A whole damn year?” I questioned aloud when the knights approached me without saying a word.

It seems that they were shocked too by my sentence, no one expected my father to ground me for a whole year!

“Arthur, we will figure things out together.” Lancelot comforted awkwardly as he was too in disbelief.

“No worries princess, we can find Merlin for you whenever we are free. I am sure we can figure something out.” The moment Gwaine mentioned Merlin, I exclaimed a firm ‘no’.

Recalling from Merlin’s letter to me, he specifically requested for me to not search for him.

As much as I wish to do so, I felt like I had to agree with his final request.

If I love him, respect him. I believe what Merlin said, he will be back.

He will come back to me one day.

“No one is to have search parties to find Merlin. No one is to seek him out, are we clear?”
