Kacchan Wouldn't Wear Glasses, His Eyes Are Too Perfect

Summary:

Best Jeanist managed to convince Katsuki to at least try to be more approachable as a hero, so he started working towards mellowing out and properly navigating his emotions through therapy, since he didn't really know who to go to for that. For the most part, the only thing that adults and peers had ever exposed him to was pride and anger. His dad was pretty mellow though, so he did have one person to go off of. He's also known Deku since forever, and Deku is much better at expressing his emotions than Katsuki is, so that's another person to go off of. But Deku sometimes praises Katsuki a little too much...

Or, Katsuki starts wearing glasses in his downtime away from people to try to mellow out and be less prideful, but Deku thinks that Katsuki's eyes have 20/20 vision, obviously, because Katsuki is good at everything, so he doesn't recognize Katsuki with glasses on and ends up feeding Katsuki's ego.

Notes:

Hi, this is my first fic ^^

I'm figuring out formatting and things still, but hopefully it isn't the worst. This is something that's been in my head a while, but I haven't written it all out yet. I'm posting this chapter mostly so that I have to go thru with it and not chicken out, but I do really want to write the whole thing and actually finish the fic.

This chapter is kind of just setting things up, but hopefully it's not too dry for exposition.

Chapter 1: Bakugou Katsuki Does Not Wear Glasses

Chapter Text

Katsuki glared down at his glasses lazily mocking him from his dresser drawer. He had stuck these underneath a bunch of Christmas socks back when he was in middle school. Back then, he was diagnosed with early AMD, an eye disease that usually happens by aging, but his repeated exposure to the bright light of his explosions caused him to develop it early. The eye doctor gave him slightly tinted glasses to help keep it from getting worse, but Katsuki stuffed them in the back of his drawer with the other things he would never wear, because obviously Katsuki could deal with it fine. He didn't have any fucking trouble seeing anything, sometimes he just didn't feel like paying attention. It had nothing to do with ability, it's just that Katsuki didn't care to look too hard at anything. Those doctors were just looking down on him because they thought a kid couldn't handle his own quirk.

Well, he thought that way until his most recent test. The paper was a bit blurry, which was weird. He didn't say anything though, because in the back of his mind, he knew that there was a chance that it was his own eyes failing him and not the nerd's tears flooding onto everyone's test papers, and he didn't want to out himself like that. Then during heroics, when fighting with Kirishima, he noticed that when Kirishima kept his arms in a close guard, it was difficult to see when Kirishima's hits began, the swings blurred until they were only an inch away. But when fighting Todoroki, who kept his distance, he could see every move just fine.

That week in therapy, Katsuki complained about the confusing things getting in the way of his success. Maybe it was a quirk?

"No, it's your pride. This is something that happens to a lot of people, it's not unusual and it doesn't make you less of a hero. Lots of heroes wear glasses, like Sir Nighteye."

Katsuki tensed. "It's not my eyes. My eyes are perfect."

"If you can't accept that your eyes are damaged, they'll get much worse. And that will harm your hero work. Just like your hearing."

Katsuki took an entire week to process it and come to terms with the idea that his eyes weren't perfect, and that his eyes needed support. He hated being put in a position where he had to take his ha-- had to accept help.

The old hag took him to get another eye exam, and he was diagnosed with intermediate dry AMD, and was given supplements to take every day to help prevent it from getting to late stage AMD. He was told that he was far-sighted, and that he might benefit from reading glasses in addition to general-use glasses. They also ordered him some prescription contacts with a slight tint in them so his retinas wouldn't recieve so much damage from the light of his quirk, but they insisted that glasses were a much better option in the long run, and would irritate his retinas much less. He very begrudgingly accepted the contact prescription, and he outright rejected the glasses.

But today, he woke up annoyed with a headache. He wasn't stupid; he knew that not wearing glasses when you need them can cause headaches and migraines. And he had a damn perfect sleep schedule and diet, so there was no way this headache was from lack of sleep or nutrition. He didn't have his newest prescription in glasses form, and he was hesitant to put in contacts because of the headache.

So now, Katsuki is glaring at these old glasses, debating if he should wear them to go grocery shopping or if he should crush them with his foot and forget about it all. Wearing glasses was so much worse than wearing contacts. At least with contacts, he was the only one who knew how much of a fuck up he was. With glasses, everyone could rip him apart.

He spent 20 minutes glaring before he gave in.

"Fuck this. If any extras say anything I'll just blow them to bits," he mumbled. Besides, he knew how to hide in a crowd. He kinda had to with how well known his class was from all the villain shit. He threw on some plain dark clothes, a hat and a mask, then hovered his hand over the glasses for a second before snatching them up and putting them on his face and leaving the house.

Thank god he was at his own house for the weekend and not at the dorms. He wasn't up for blasting himself out his window just to sneak out, and he didn't want a single fucking extra to recognize him.
