Chapter Text
Ami leaned her head against the wall, finally catching a moment to breathe. She looked to her left, out the window; the sun had cast itself across the city like a great blanket. The sunlight streaming through the window provided a great balance to the January Northeastern cold, and Ami smiled softly to herself.
She looked up upon hearing footsteps pass her by. The girl in front of her nearly fell backwards trying to adjust her hat while holding a stack of boxes. "That was close." She grunted and looked over. Y'sure you're alright with me being your roommate, Ami?"
Ami waved her friend down and smiled cheerily. "Of course it's alright, Mako. I'm happy to have you!"
Mako nodded before shuffling off to set her things down in her bedroom. Ami pushed up her glasses and pulled out her BlackBerry, moving through text messages with various coworkers. She looked up, though, upon hearing muffled groaning from the hallway.
"UGHHH. Do we have to put three in one apartment? Why can't you go live in your own place?"
"Usagi, can it! We're sticking together, and that's that. Even if I don't like it either..."
Ami let out a chuckle listening to her friends bicker like a married couple. As far as she was concerned, though, the actual problem was keeping Luna and Artemis safe; after all, Minako was still downstairs arguing with the owner over pet policy. Well, that was for their apartment. Ami looked back out the window at the other end of the apartment, taking inventory of the view.
New York was an entirely different beast than Tokyo. Even the skyline was something else. It was intimidating in its majesty, and Ami felt the postcards never really conveyed the real deal. She took out her wallet and gazed softly at a picture of all five of them as young girls, fourteen years ago...
"Ami, can you help me?" Mako called from the bedroom. Ami waded through the air to the room, looking upon Mako in her current predicament. "I'm not sure how this gets going."
Ami sighed and knelt down next to her, calmly inspecting the TV's backside. She unplugged the cable box and plugged it back in, and the picture came to life again.
"You're a lifesaver!"
"Don't mention it, Mako."
Ami left the room and found her way to the small kitchenette on the other side of the apartment. She checked her phone again - a message from the boss.
P: Ami, are you settling in alright?
Ami gave it some thought for a moment before writing a response.
A: I sure am, Ms. Pauline. Thank you!
The boss sent a little thumbs-up emoticon and Ami sighed, relieved. She looked back out the window, folding her hands together.
Ami Mizuno, guardian of love and wisdom - and chief of staff to the brand-new mayor of New York City.
